WWE WrestleMania 41 review: John Cena’s quest to ruin wrestling begins

Image: WWE

The best way to compare the two nights of WWE WrestleMania 41, strangely, is like comparing WCW and WWF pay-per-views in 1997.

Night one was like a WWF show. The undercard was underwhelming, feeling like an episode of Raw or SmackDown. But the main event, where Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and CM Punk had their Shakespherian story of love, trust, and betrayal, was excellent, ending the show on a strong note.

It was a typical, very well done, big time WWE main event match. Everyone kicked out of everyone’s finish, the timing to everything was great, and then it was time for Paul Heyman to make a decision. Would he stay with Roman, keep Punk’s favor and guide him instead, or go with Seth? He chose the latter, screwing over both of his former associates to side with someone completely new.

I liked what WWE did here. I think it was time to add a new wrinkle in the dynamic between these four. Heyman/Seth is something new and I’d like to see where they go with it. Based off the win, I think Seth needs to go after the World title with his first target being new champion Jey Uso, which I’ll get to later.

Night two, meanwhile, was like a WCW show. The undercard had some great matches, especially the opening three-way match for the Women’s World title. Then, there was the main event between John Cena and Cody Rhodes that stunk the joint up. We probably should have listened when Cena said he was going to ruin pro wrestling. He wasn’t kidding.

Nothing about the match worked. At this point in his career, Cena’s stuff doesn’t look good and he spent the first half of the match avoiding bumps. There was a lot of stalling. The ref was, in fact, bumped. Then came probably the goofiest, corniest main event finish I’ve seen in some while.

Travis Scott came out, slowly made his way to the ring, and attempted to help Cena. Rhodes managed to get the better of both men, eventually laying out Scott. Cena recovered, grabbed the title, and went to strike Rhodes, who grabbed the title. But suddenly, he DEBATED about striking Cena, making faces and looking conflicted. Dude, he left you a bloody mess at Elimination Chamber. This should not be something to struggle internally about like an afterschool special.

Cena, the smart heel, low blows goofy Cody and hits the AA to win his 17th World title, finally surpassing Ric Flair’s 16 to become the most decorated champion in WWE’s version history. And what a match to do it.

This match didn’t do anyone any favors. How are we supposed to get excited about Cena’s upcoming matches when he had this performance at WrestleMania? How do we get behind Rhodes who completely blew his chance? Of course, these will be answers given later as we start to build toward the eventual rematch but I’m hardly looking forward to it at this stage.

The rest of WrestleMania 41 night one

  • Jey Uso scored the big one, defeating Gunther to win the World Heavyweight title. I didn’t think this was as good as their Saturday Night’s Main Event match from a few months ago as it took a long time for it to go into second gear. The last few minutes picked up with Jey scoring the SUBMISSION WIN. That was weird, but there’s probably a story to it we’ll soon see unfold.
  • Tiffany Stratton defeated Charlotte Flair in a match that never clicked. Both looked sloppy and missed stuff left and right. They didn’t work well together and while Charlotte got great heat, there was nothing to the match beyond that. I figure there is an eventual rematch, but I hope it’s better than what we got here.
  • El Grande Americano defeated Rey Fenix in a match that was perfectly alright, but didn’t get enough time. Fenix subbed for Mysterio who tore his groin the night before on SmackDown. I figure there will be a mask vs. mask match somewhere down the line where Fenix or whoever wins and Americano is unmasked as Gable.
  • Jade Cargill got her revenge over Naomi in a match that was just okay. I really like Naomi’s new presentation, and she cut some great promos leading into this match. But there wasn’t anything here beyond a Jade win.
  • The New Day defeated War Raiders in a perfectly fine match. I will note that Ivar looked great here and did some cool stuff. I figured a title change was coming as it was time, plus people like to boo Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods.
  • Jacob Fatu defeated LA Knight to win the United States title. This was probably the second best match of the evening. Knight seems to show up for the big shows and looked great here as did Fatu, particularly in the final minutes of the match where he dominated like a complete monster. Fatu has a great aura about him and this kind of finish adds to it.

The rest of WrestleMania 41 night two

  • IYO SKY retained the Women’s World title in a fantastic opening match. This was your classic main event-style match where everyone was going for big moves and everything looked great. Bianca Belair even did her trademark hair whiplash spot, this time to Rhea Ripley. I like that after weeks of Bianca and Rhea getting into each other’s faces with IYO feeling like the odd woman out, she was the one that walked away WrestleMania as champion.
  • Randy Orton beating Joe Hendry in a quick match was just that: a short match aimed at Hendry doing his entrance that always gets over. Everyone enjoyed this but, geez, how does this benefit TNA that their World Champion was pinned in such short order?
  • Becky Lynch made her big return, teaming with Lyra Valkyria to defeat Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez. This wasn’t anything special as the big story of the match was Becky making her return. We’ll see where they go as a team.
  • Dominik Mysterio is the new Intercontinental Champion, defeating Bron Breakker, Finn Balor, and Penta in a great four-way match. Breakker was the star of the match, looking like a million bucks in overpowering everyone with traditional Steiner flair. I felt like this was the right move as Mysterio has really done well perfecting this persona over the last couple of years. It’s a hot act.
  • The street fight between Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest was what you’d expect. A lot of tables were broken, stairs were used, and pretty much everything you’d see in a normal street fight. I thought it was pretty good, both of them always work hard. McIntyre won relatively clean, so I wonder if there’s more to him and Priest or if he moves to someone else.
  • Logan Paul got the better of AJ Styles in what I thought was a good match. Paul is an incredible athlete and even though he is what he is, it’s still remarkable to see him have this kind of match where he’s holding his own against someone like Styles.

WWE WrestleMania 41 Sunday media scrum notes: Becky Lynch says she’s back full time

Becky Lynch is back full time.

Triple H, Lynch, Lyra Valkyria, Logan Paul, and others took questions from the media following WrestleMania 41 Sunday. Here’s the highlights:

Logan Paul

  • When asked about his part-time status, He said when Triple H calls him, he answers the call. He said he put on “five star matches” every time he’s out there and whoever Triple H wants him to go out there against, he’ll rise to the challenge.

Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria

  • Lynch was joined by her daughter, Roux.
  • She said that taking a break from WWE for the last year was amazing. It was good to get into activities and school for her daughter, a routine schedule.
  • The most important thing in her life is her family, and wrestling is next. To be back and be at Lyra’s side is amazing. She told Lyra that she was the biggest hope for the future and she wanted to be a contributing factor in walking out of WrestleMania as champions.
  • She confirmed that she was back full time, said that she’ll go hard until she could no more, or at least take another break.

John Cena took questions from the media, but mostly regarded all questions as click bait then demanded people to watch Raw to see what the “Last Real Champion” does to ruin wrestling.

Triple H

  • Triple H first took time to praise the staff and talent involved in setting up WrestleMania.
  • Offical numbers will be out later in the week but in terms of sponsorship, merchandise, and social media, all records have been broken. Vegas delivered in the labiggest way possible for fans all over the world. He called it an incredible weekend.
  • Great to have Becky Lynch back. Bayley is a pro and will be alright.
  • Said Joe Hendry was the perfect opportunity to do a scenario that no one thought of, saying it was the right moment in the right spot. Hendry has a bright future and was happy we could put him in this spot, and it won’t be his last WrestleMania, and tonight was his easiest.
  • Regarding Chyna going into the Hall of Fame, he wasn’t sure about next year’s ceremony but it would definitely happen.
  • On thanking Vince McMahon during his Hall of Fame speech, Triple H said that none of us would be here without him, so it was pretty hard not to mention him.
  • He praised Travis Scott, calling him “incredibly passionate.” Triple H said that Scott could get injured in situations like this so what he is doing is out of respect and he’s glad he is here to help. He said you’d have to tune in tomorrow to see if he’ll show up on Raw, and you’ll have to tune in and see if he’ll ever have a match.

WWE WrestleMania night two notes: More celebrities, announced attendance

Here are some news and notes from Sunday’s second night of WWE WrestleMania 41 action from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Celebrities in the house

Much like during night one, a large amount of celebrities and luminaries were shown on-screen for the second night.

The list included comedian Tony Hinchcliffe who will host The Roast of WrestleMania Sunday night; musicians Flavor Flav, Ava Max, Quavo, and Rich The Kid; music producer Metro Boomin; Jahmyr Gibbs of the NFL’s Detroit Lions; former UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier, current UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili and UFC fighter Colby Covington; boxer Terence Crawford, and actors Dean Norris, Vanessa Hudgens (also at night one), and Rana Daggubati.

Additionally, Slayer guitarist Kerry King played Damian Priest down to the ring. King plays the guitar for Priest’s entrance theme with his South of Heaven finisher named for a Slayer song.

Attendance

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin was the legend designated to give the attendance for the evening: a sold-out 63,226 and a two-night attendance of 124,693. As of 4 PM EST, WrestleTix reported just over 60,000 distributed with a setup of just over 60,000.

Much like night one, the announced number is shy of the 63,969 for the 2024 Vegas Kickoff Classic between USC and LSU but more than the 61,629 announced for that same year’s Super Bowl. Night one’s attendance was announced as 61,467.

Before he did that, he managed to drive his four-wheeler into a barricade which appeared to knock a woman down. After Austin did his business, WWE head Nick Khan was seen checking on the woman.

WrestleMania Debuts

After Jacob Fatu, Tiffany Stratton and Rey Fenix made their official WrestleMania debuts Saturday, even more made their first in-ring appearance on the big stage Sunday.

TNA World Champion Joe Hendry answered the open challenge to take on Randy Orton following Kevin Owens’ neck injury. Even though he isn’t under WWE contract, it’s the second major PLE Hendry has appeared at in 2025 following his debut at the Royal Rumble.

After Fenix debuted Saturday, Penta made his debut Sunday, failing to win the WWE Intercontinental title in a four-way. That match featured Bron Breakker, who also made his WrestleMania debut in losing the belt to Dominik Mysterio.

Reigning Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria made her WrestleMania debut memorable by winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles with the returning Becky Lynch.

John Cena wins 17th World title, defeats Cody Rhodes at WWE WrestleMania 41

In his final WrestleMania match, John Cena made history by defeating Cody Rhodes for the undisputed WWE title at WrestleMania 41 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The win gives Cena his 17th World title reign, breaking Ric Flair’s recognized record of 16. It’s his first since 2017 and comes as he is in the final year of his in-ring career and days before he turns 48.

While rapper Travis Scott was part of the action in a callback to Elimination Chamber when Cena turned heel, The Rock was not.

As both men were down following an offensive sequence, Scott, who had slapped Rhodes and injured his eardrum at Elimination Chamber, came out to bring everything to a halt. Cena was thrilled to see him, raised Scott’s hand, brought him up to the apron, and wanted Scott to slap Rhodes again. Rhodes evaded it and hit a Cross Rhodes but Scott pulled the referee out of the ring to break it up.

The 39-year-old Rhodes then invited Scott in the ring who tried to slap him again, but got a Cross Rhodes for good measure. Cena was waiting for Rhodes with the WWE title belt, but Rhodes stopped him and got the belt himself. Cena begged off and pleaded for Rhodes not to hit him but it was a ruse to kick him low instead. Cena then hit him with the belt, revived the referee, and got the pin and win.

Afterward, Cena celebrated with Scott in the ring to close another financially successful weekend for WWE.

Flair took to X to congratulate Cena on the victory, someone he holds in high regard:

**********

Fans were into the match from the onset, mainly booing Rhodes and cheering for Cena as had been expected more and more since Rhodes’ reaction on Friday’s SmackDown.

Cena, looking virtually the same as he did his entire run but wearing black sneakers and black knee pads, entered the ring with no entrance video or fanfare: just a black background with white letters that read his name.

Cena hit an AA that got a nearfall followed by a Five Knuckle Shuffle that Rhodes worked his way out of. He later hit another AA, this coming from the second rope, that got a nearfall. He made a mistake going up to the top rope with a missed leg drop that Rhodes countered into a power bomb of sorts. He then hit a top rope Cody Cutter that got his own nearfall.

Before the end sequence that closed the match, Rhodes accidentally kicked Cena into the referee that saw Rhodes get a visual pin after a Cross Rhodes. As Rhodes checked on him, Cena took a turnbuckle pad off and tossed Rhodes into it twice, leading into another AA for another close nearfall as the referee came to.

**********

The win ends the year-plus title run at 378 days for Rhodes that began at last April’s WrestleMania 40 with his victory over Roman Reigns that completed his “story” to win his first major World title. He successfully defended the title eight times.

‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin crashes ATV at WWE WrestleMania 41

WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s WrestleMania 41 appearance did not go as planned.

Austin rode to the ring on an ATV on night two of WrestleMania 41, then crashed the vehicle into the ringside barricade as he maneuvered the vehicle around the ring.

As he took laps around the ring on the ATV, Austin crashed, smashing the vehicle into the LED boards decorating the barricade. A fan standing behind the barricade fell back towards their seat following the impact. Austin appeared to make an apology to the fan, then entered the ring for his planned segment where he announced the night two WrestleMania attendance, then the total attendance for both nights of the event.

As Austin’s segment concluded with him drinking his customary beers in the ring, WWE president Nick Khan was seen on camera having a conversation with the fan who fell back after the barricade was struck.

Austin was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for a second time this weekend, with his WrestleMania 13 match against Bret Hart being inducted as an “Immortal Moment.”

Austin headlined the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009.

WWE WrestleMania 41 attendance announced —

During his segment, Austin announced a sold-out night two WrestleMania attendance of 63,226, and a total attendance of 124,693 for the two-night show.

Becky Lynch returns at WWE WrestleMania 41

Becky Lynch’s nearly year-long WWE hiatus has come to an end.

In her surprise return to the ring, Lynch teamed with Lyra Valkyria to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles from Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez at WrestleMania 41 night two. The match was originally announced with Bayley as Valkyria’s partner, but WWE ran an angle where Bayley was taken out in a backstage attack. Valkyria was given 24 hours to find a new partner — and Lynch was heavily rumored to be the selection.

The finish of the match was Lynch getting revenge on Morgan by pinning her after a Manhandle Slam. When we last saw Lynch on WWE programming, she lost a steel cage match to Morgan on Raw in May 2024 after Dominik Mysterio interfered.

During her hiatus from WWE, Lynch focused on acting work, including picking up a role in the upcoming Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.”

The new Women’s Tag Team Champions are both from Ireland, and Lynch has been a mentor to Valkyria in her career. She put Valkyria over in 2023 by dropping the NXT Women’s Championship to her.

Valkyria is now a double champion, holding the Women’s Intercontinental Championship in addition to the Women’s Tag Team titles.

The identity of Bayley’s attacker has not been confirmed by WWE. Morgan & Rodriguez claimed that they were not responsible.

TNA Champion Joe Hendry answers Randy Orton’s WWE WrestleMania 41 challenge

TNA World Champion Joe Hendry was in action at WrestleMania 41 night two, answering Randy Orton’s open challenge.

Hendry made his surprise WrestleMania debut in a loss to Orton at Sunday night’s event in Las Vegas. Though Hendry entered with his TNA World Championship belt, it was not on the line in this impromptu matchup. They wrestled for three minutes until Orton got the win with an RKO out of nowhere as Hendry was posing.

After the match, Orton showed respect to Hendry and gave him a moment in front of the crowd — before dropping him with another RKO.

It was originally supposed to be Orton vs. Kevin Owens tonight, but Owens had to be pulled from the WrestleMania card due to injury. Owens announced on SmackDown earlier this month that he’s been dealing with a neck injury and needs to undergo surgery.

Insisting that he still wanted a WrestleMania match, Orton issued an open challenge for anyone to face him. WWE kept his opponent a surprise until Hendry’s music hit.

Hendry’s popularity has grown over the past year with his “I Believe in Joe Hendry” theme song going viral on social media. With the partnership that exists between WWE and TNA, Hendry made several NXT appearances in 2024 and was later a surprise entrant in the 2025 Royal Rumble.

Hendry became TNA World Champion this January — and his next title defense will be at TNA’s Rebellion pay-per-view next Sunday (April 27) in a three-way match against Frankie Kazarian and NXT wrestler Ethan Page.

Dominik Mysterio wins Intercontinental title at WWE WrestleMania 41

Dominik Mysterio is Intercontinental Champion.

Mysterio outlasted three other men at WrestleMania 41 Sunday to become the new champion. The finish of the match had Finn Balor lay out Breakker with the coup de gras. However, Mysterio was ready on the top rope and pinned Balor to become champion for the first time.

Breakker had been champion for over 180 days, defeating Jey Uso back in October on an episode of Raw. It was his second reign as champion, defeating Sami Zayn last year.

Breakker had wins over Penta, Balor, and Mysterio in the weeks leading to the match. He had also successfully defended the title against Penta and Balor. During that time, dissension also grew between Mysterio and Balor, with Liv Morgan encouraging Mysterio to get involved and put himself in the title picture.

This was the first title change of the second night of WrestleMania 41. In the opener, IYO SKY retained the Women’s World title over Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley.

IYO SKY retains Women’s World title at WWE WrestleMania 41

IYO SKY is still Women’s World Champion after surviving two challengers at WrestleMania 41.

Night two of WrestleMania opened with SKY defeating Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match to retain her title. Dubbed an instant classic by the commentary team, the match was a 14-minute fast-paced sprint with the three competitors going back and forth until SKY pinned Belair.

The finishing sequence included Belair striking Ripley with her braid and then landing a KOD. It looked like Belair had the victory, but SKY broke up the pin with a moonsault and then got the three count on Belair to retain.

Belair had a 4-0 career WrestleMania record before taking the loss here. She was booed by the Las Vegas crowd tonight in this all-babyface matchup.

This is SKY’s first WrestleMania win. Her reign as champion began last month when she defeated Ripley. The story was that Belair — who had already secured a Women’s World Championship shot at Mania — got involved in that match leading to Ripley’s loss. With Ripley blaming Belair for costing her the title, a triple threat was eventually made for WrestleMania.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque praised the SKY vs. Belair vs. Ripley match, calling it “F’N incredible.”
