WOL: The All Out angle that should have been on AEW Dynamite

Image: AEW

Hindsight is 20/20 and on Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Live, guest host Josh Nason thinks he has clear vision.

One thing that stuck out to him was a big angle that took place at last Saturday’s AEW All Out that, given how the week played out, should have been at AEW Dynamite instead.

He also looks at the happenings from Saturday’s AEW Collision and the sudden glut of mid-card wrestlers all returning from injury and the constant battle for room on TV.

Of course, Josh delves into the weekend that was for both TNA and NXT who are inescapably linked for better or for worse.

He also talks about an unforced error on social media, his thoughts on The Rock’s new Smashing Machine movie, a preview of this week, and more.

WOL: AEW match announcements, ROH’s maybe happy streaming accident, WWE & ESPN

Image: AEW

The final Wrestling Observer Live of the summer has arrived with your summer fill-in host Josh Nason, filling in for Andrew Zarian one last time before the calendar changes.

While this show has zero to do with WWE Clash in Paris (get that on Wrestling Observer Radio or the Bryan & Vinny Show), here’s what this ad-free 40 minutes does have to do with:

  • Josh has some issues with how AEW does their match announcements with a big pointer finger to Saturday’s AEW Collision
  • Josh recaps Saturday’s Collision with some befuddlement about what the deal is with Hologram (seen above)
  • Josh thinks that Friday’s technical issues with Ring of Honor Death Before Dishonor might be a blessing in disguise
  • Josh also talks about his love of afternoon live airings of WWE shows, Randy Orton’s Fireball product placement, and his take on Dave Meltzer & Bryan Alvarez’s debate about AEW All Out PPV buys vs. WWE WrestlePalooza.

All that and more awaits for free. Listen below for free on our Spotify or Apple Podcast account (search Wrestling Observer).

Tom Lawlor recovering following successful hip surgery

Tom Lawlor is doing well following hip surgery.

Bryan Alvarez has provided an update following Lawlor’s hip replacement surgery, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

“Filthy Tom’s hip surgery was a success and he’s currently recovering, continued best wishes to him!,” Alvarez reports.

Lawlor, who is a co-host on Wrestling Observer Live with Alvarez and is a frequent contributor to the Wrestling Observer/Figure Four website, revealed last week that he would go under the knife on Tuesday. Lawlor was optimistic about his recovery when revealing the news.

“Yeah, I’ve heard from quite a few people that have had hip replacements…this is one of them that a lot of people say they’ve had great success with, was a game changer, helped them out,” he said. So hopefully I fall into that boat as well.”

Lawlor has been out of action since May with a number of injuries. In addition to his hip, he’s also said that he might need back surgery in the future as he’s also dealing with herniated discs.

WOL: I guess there’s a wrestling war after all

For the second straight week, there’s an extended Sunday version of Wrestling Observer Live with Josh Nason, available below or on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Josh leads off with an admission that he was wrong (I know!) about there not being a wrestling war between WWE and AEW. Given the past week of the news that WWE is planning a head-to-head PLE with All Out and John Cena’s final match opposite Worlds End in addition to TNA’s possible TV home and night, it’s more clear than ever. But why should WWE care? I discuss.

He also gives his thoughts on the UFC’s deal with Paramount and why AEW is a (temporary) winner.

He also looks ahead to next weekend’s AEW Forbidden Door card and why he is looking forward to it more than week vs. last week.

Josh also goes over some things he thinks he knows he thinks including why Ring of Honor needs a direction, Nick Khan’s hatred of out-of-office messages, Big E’s wrestling future, Karrion Kross, and how Vince McMahon will be remembered.

Tom Lawlor provides update on hip replacement surgery

Tom Lawlor is heading in for surgery.

On Friday’s Wrestling Observer Live, the former NJPW Strong Openweight Champion confirmed that he would be getting hip replacement surgery next week for his left side.

“Going under the knife Tuesday morning, 7:30 a.m.,” he said. “Yeah, I’ve heard from quite a few people that have had hip replacements…this is one of them that a lot of people say they’ve had great success with, was a game changer, helped them out. So I hopefully I fall into that boat as well.”

Lawlor, who has been wrestling on the independent scene for a number of years following his UFC run, hasn’t wrestled since May. Last month, he confirmed he’d need the surgery.

“I went to a local medical facility,” he explained. “A local medical professional took a look at me. He took a look at these scans that I’ve had done and he said, ‘You know what, Filthy Tom Lawlor? If you walked in to the nursing home right now, there are 90 year old women who would rightfully have pity upon the shape that your left hip is in. He said the right’s not great either, but the left side’s so bad that there’s just a ton of bone spurs that have pushed the hip out of the socket.”

In addition to his hip, Lawlor said he is also suffering from herniated discs and has lost a lot of feeling in his left leg as a result.

WOL: The week WWE proved they are cancel-proof

For the first time in years, the Sunday edition of Wrestling Observer Live is TWO HOURS long (well, for Sports Byline, anyway).

Josh Nason guest hosts this week with a lot to talk about including:

  • The week that WWE proved they are cancel-proof with the return of Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman explaining there are no apologies for him returning, and the insulating culture of many WWE fans in 2025 that made it possible
  • The winners & losers of the WWE & ESPN PLE deal
  • An early look at AEW Forbidden Door, why this year’s lineup doesn’t feel special thus far, and why the gimmick has lost its luster
  • Why the John Cena heel turn was going to be a disaster from the start and why we should have known

All that and lots more ahead. Listen below for free or on either Spotify or Apple Podcasts (search for Wrestling Observer):

WOL: Sam Adonis on the differences between American & Mexican wrestling fans

It’s WWE SummerSlam Saturday and we hope your home’s air conditioned.

On today’s Wrestling Observer Live, Jim Valley gives you the rundown on night one. At first glance, it looks like a lot of babyface wins, but that can’t be right, right? WWE always throws in some surprise victories.

Earlier this week, you may have seen the AAA crowd in Mexico go crazy for Dom Mysterio and El Grande Americano. If you haven’t watched a lot of lucha, you may be wondering why Mexican fans are cheering Americano when he’s seemingly making a mockery of lucha libre.

Enter Sam Adonis, once called “the most hated man in Mexico.” He’s wrestled there for years in virtually every promotion including AAA, CMLL, The Crash and more. On today’s show, he offers his perspective on the differences between American fans and Mexican fans, and why some reactions in Mexico can be unexpected.

If you’re a fan of lucha or want to learn more, this is a great interview.

WOL: TNA Slammiversary preview & WWE relationship, defending Goldberg

Josh Nason returns with a brand-new Wrestling Observer Live Sunday, free for anyone to listen to.

He leads off with a look at TNA and their relationship with WWE. At this point, is there any interest surviving without this relationship or do they simply want to deepen it? Can they survive without it?

He also previews Sunday’s Slammiversary which looks like a pretty good card on PPV paper and one that proved him wrong in terms of ticket sales. What will AJ Styles do tonight anyway?

He looks at the happenings from AEW Collision and a fairly hum-drum week following a great All In last Saturday. Why is that?

He then wraps up with some thoughts on the public disparagement about Goldberg following his comments in his interview with Ariel Helwani and some bad takes on social media in general. He also lauds Pat McAfee for why he took a step back from WWE.

WOL: Sifting through a WWE & AEW weekend content storm

Image: WWE

Josh Nason has returned with Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Live on a weekend that featured five events from WWE and AEW combined.

Josh delves into his thoughts about all the big news from Saturday’s AEW All In from Hangman Page winning the AEW World title to Cope returning to Okada defeating Omega to Adam Cole’s concussion to Toni Storm retaining, and all the other developments and happenings.

Josh then looks at the news coming out of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event which includes Seth Rollins suffering a leg injury which some still think might be a work, the final match from WCW/WWE legend Bill Goldberg, and some Jelly Roll.

Josh unloads his frustration on how Goldberg’s retirement speech was reduced to less than 40 seconds on national TV and why the full speech hasn’t been posted to WWE’s YouTube channel.

Josh also previews tonight’s WWE Evolution and the week ahead.

WOL: A final request for Goldberg, Kenny Omega sees the future, how Ace Romero lost 200 pounds

Image: WWE

It’s Sunday and that means it’s time for another packed Wrestling Observer Live with Josh Nason (X or BlueSky), filling in for Andrew Zarian on this Fourth of July weekend in the U.S.

Josh leads off with a look back at last night’s AEW Collision and how it plays into this Saturday’s All In Texas. Josh talks about the plight of Daniel Garcia and where he could find himself after next weekend’s proceedings. (Hint: No more Mr. Nice Guy.)

He then plays a few choice clips from Friday’s Kenny Omega Wrestling Observer Radio interview including how Omega is viewing the “ADHD” future for wrestling in addition to seeing his fifth match with Kazuchika Okada as a new look as opposed to being the fifth chapter in their story.

Josh also has a plea for WWE as Goldberg’s final approach comes this Saturday: an in-ring confrontation with fellow impending retiree John Cena.

The show wraps up with how former TNA wrestler and current indie competitor Ace Romero lost 200 pounds in a year — an inspiration for anyone looking to get healthy.

All that and more awaits, so join me on the Sunday feel-good edition of Wrestling Observer Live.

Tom Lawlor gives injury update, doesn’t know if he’ll wrestle again

Tom Lawlor has provided an update on his health.

On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Live, Lawlor gave an update on his injury status as he hasn’t wrestled for the last six weeks.

“I had some scans done and unfortunately, its sounds as if I’m heading towards…what I’ve been told I need to have done is have a hip replacement in my left hip and some sort of spinal surgery,” he said. “The L5 S1 vertebrae in my back, down at the bottom, I have herniated discs, there’s no discs there anymore. And the spinal column, that portion is out of place and is pinching a nerve in my back and that’s why I’ve lost a lot of feeling in my left leg, some size was atrophied. And really, I have a hard time walking.”

“I don’t know how long I’m going to be on the shelf, I don’t know if I’ll ever wrestle again,” he added. “It really depends on that the neurosurgeon says.”

He told Bryan Alvarez that he will get “a few different looks” from doctors. He said he was also a potential candidate for disc replacement surgery.

“Physically I’m feeling awful, Mentally, emotionally I’m fine,” he stated.

So far In 2025, Lawlor has made appearances for MLW, Jersey Championship Wrestling, GCW, and New Japan Strong.

WOL: Kings, Queens, Punks & planning dates

Image: WWE

As expected, he leads off with a look at Saturday’s WWE Night of Champions which saw John Cena defeat CM Punk who had a hell of a weekend in Saudi Arabia. Josh talks about his new column on Punk and his thoughts on the whole situation.

He then tries to plot out Cena’s final 16 dates as an active wrestler in WWE which, like his social life in high school, proved to be a bit more difficult than he thought.

He also looks ahead to a sparse card for AEW Dynamite 300 and Collision 100, TNA getting some new dates, and thoughts on the changing media landscape with the news from SiriusXM and Kevin Iole.

All that and more awaits. Listening is your friend so check it out below OR for free on Spotify or Apple Podcasts via the Wrestling Observer feed.
