WWE Raw live results: Bellas vs. Riott Squad, HBK appears

After a rough week of travel for the roster, the Labor Day edition of Raw takes place at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio tonight.

Since the August 26 house show in Rochester, New York, the Raw wrestlers have been in Toronto, London, Osaka, and Shanghai for events over the past week before flying home for TV. Tonight’s show will feature Nikki & Brie Bella’s return to televised in-ring action, a Tag Team title match, and an appearance by Shawn Michaels.

Nikki & Brie will be teaming up against two members of The Riott Squad. In the Raw Tag Team Championship match, The B-Team will defend against The Revival after Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder defeated them in non-title action last week.

Michaels’ appearance will be to build up Triple H vs. The Undertaker at Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on October 6.

Plus, the build to Hell in a Cell will continue after Braun Strowman aligned with Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre last week.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

Cole welcomes us to Raw on Labor Day before Braun Strowman comes down with Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler. Renee Young returns to commentary with Corey and Cole. Bruan is mid-ring with a big grin on his face and demands that they air a replay of his beating of Roman last week. We see that alongside the proper context of it being a response to the Shield powerbomb Braun through the announce table two weeks ago.

Braun tells us that he gave Roman a chance to just face him for the title, but he had to get his friends involved – and that just showed him how weak Roman was. Dolph and Drew are his pack and this is now his yard.

Drew talks about how great they are before Dolph says this group will be more dominant than the Nation of Domination, DX, and especially The Shield. The Shield comes down, but Corbin sends mid-carders down to stop them. The Shield topple them before surrounding the ring, so Baron calls out more goons who get beaten up, so even more come down and then with several dozen folks out, they separate them. The fans chant “let them fight” and Seth breaks out and he and Roman run backstage.

The return of Shawn Michaels and the Bella Twins are hyped, before we get a recap of the opening segment.

Backstage, Baron has the Shield arrested.

The Bella Twins defeat The Riott Squad

The Riott Squad gets a jobber intro. The Bellas come back with Jojo essentially giving them a press release as a ring introduction. After that, the announcers talk about how they’re two of the busiest people in all of Hollywood. Renee is non-plussed at her husband’s recent arrest, but is excited to see the Bellas return. Liv runs from Nikki before Sarah overpowers her. Nikki is trying to gain the advantage with her chain wrestling skill. I sense a flaw in her plan. Logan grinds away on the arm of Nikki, but Nikki gets a tornado divorce court for 2.

Brie tags in and hammerlocks her mid-ring. Sarah reaches out for a tag and gets it, leading to a long Liv chinlock. Logan comes in while Cole talks about her being a viking and Corey talking about Logan actually making her own belt. Brie hits the yes kicks before nailing two Brie Mode knees. Sarah attacks Brie on the floor. After a break, Logan armlocks her. Nikki comes in and sends Logan out, leading to Brie faceplanting off a tope and Nikki beating Liv with the Rack Attack 2.0.

Nikki and Brie team with Ronda to face the Riott Squad at Super Show-Down.

The B-Team vs. The Revival is hyped up alongside HBK’s return. Corbin tells Stephanie that Raw is back on track. Finn Balor meets with him and demands a rematch. Baron gets his manhood insulted, so he grants him his rematch in the main event spot.  .

Bobby Roode and Chad Gable defeat The Ascension

Chad shines more than he has in two years on the main roster by German suplexing everyone and looking impressive while doing so. Roode comes in for chops and gets 2 off a suplex. Viktor gets a long chinlock on Roode and a slick Hawk-esque fistdrop for 2 before Konnor gets a long chinlock and then tags Viktor in for a long modified chinlock.

Gable blind tags in and runs wild with crossbodies and hits a cannonball off the apron before landing a missile dropkick. He hits Chaos Theory and wins it. Elias is backstage with a guy showing his album off on iTunes.

Elias comes out and says he’s done dealing with crazy chicks and if Christopher Columbus knew his name would be used for his city, he’d have turned his ship around. He also can’t stand the buckeye, and it’s far inferior to Michigan’s wolverines.

Alexa, Mickie, and Alicia come down while Alexa gets a ton of cheers being in her hometown. Alexa says she graduated high school in the very building they’re in and does her high school chant before insulting the fans for doing it and being overjoyed that she got out of this place when she did. Alexa gets in a fantastic “hi zombies!” line at the crowd. Alexa hits on Elias before Ronda Rousey’s theme hits and Nattie comes out to face Alexa.

Alexa Bliss defeats Natalya

Alexa stalls to start before Nattie flips around and outwrestles her on the mat. Basement dropkick gets 2 for Nattie. Alexa slugs her before she distracts the ref so Foxy and Mickie can choke Nattie on the rope. Alexa DDTs her and gets an armbar and Nattie taps out. After the match, Ronda goes for a Karalen lift to Alexa, but Foxy jumps in and gets thrown around before Alexa chopblocks Ronda and throws her into the steps. Ronda slugs away and sends Alexa packing. Ronda helps Nattie up and helps her out of the ring.

A recap airs of the Shield being arrested earlier. Renee strangely says that the Shield’s arrest was justified, even with that involving her husband. We get an update that the Shield has been fingerpinted. Corbin tells a stagehand to get his Rolex cleaned. Braun tells Baron to find he and his friends some competition.

Drew and Dolph want a tag title match and threaten that the Revival will be taken out. Braun tells Baron he wants competitoin tonight too. The Revival are interviewed by Charly about The B-Team and they call them a mockery. Drew and Dolph attack them. The Revival could’ve prevented this beating if they just watched the show at a 90 degree angle like everyone else.

The B-Team comes out, but The Revival doesn’t. Instead, Drew and Dolph take their place.

Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre defeat The B-Team

Axel gets a backslide for 2 after Bo low-bridges Drew. The heels regroup on the floor for an ad break. Drew dominates Axel for a while, but Bo gets a desperation tornado DDT. Axel comes in with Dolph, who eats 2 off a Perfectplex. Dolph superkicks him before they win with the Claymore/Zig Zag combo.

After the loss, Cole talks about how good the B-Team were while Drew and Dolph celebrate with their belts amid blue lighting. They did a good job presenting both men as bigger stars with the revamped lighting.

The Authors of Pain walk backstage with Drake Maverick in AOP garb.

Authors of Pain defeat Jobbers

AOP walks out with Drake Maverick, who Cole and Corey talk about as the 205 Live GM. Drake talks about being the GM of 205 Live and now being the manager of AOP and he’ll make them the tag team champions. Rezar hits the corner death valley bomb before they hit the super collider and win.

Corey says that with AOP, Drake Maverick may just be the most dangerous person in all of WWE. There’s putting people over and there’s saying ridiculous stuff like that. HHH vs. Taker is hyped up. Last week’s hall of famer-filled video airs for their match at Super Show-Down.

Ronda and Nattie chat backstage before the Bellas come in and Nattie leaves because she doesn’t feel good. The Bellas call Ronda the greatest women’s champion ever and the only reason they came back was for her. In a comedy highlight for the ages, they offer to train Ronda Rousey, and the Olympic medalist and former UFC World Champion accepts the offer.

HBK comes out and says that HHH has more in the tank than Undertaker does and still picks him to win. Undertaker comes down and says that over the last 20 years, he’s taken the best both HHH and HBK had and put them both down. He took a part of them, but their egos can’t accept and he chose HHH because he took his career from him

HBK says that he stayed retired to keep his integrity and out of respect for Undertaker. He always hears the chant for one more match, but can’t do it. He hears the fans want it, and half the roster wants it – and it’s been nearly a decade with him turning down millions of dollars for one match.

Taker asks if it’s respect or fear that keeps him retired. Taker tells him that if he came back, it would be for a match against him – and HBK knows just like the fans do, that he would put HBK down again. He’ll put HHH down in Melbourne too, and they did an outstanding job building up both the HHH vs. Taker match and especially a Taker vs. HBK match if they ever do one.

Sasha Banks and Bayley defeat Dana Brooke and Ember Moon

Mike Rome sends a tweet out on The Shield – they have been charged with inciting a riot and already met with a judge. Sasha Banks comes down with Bayley for a tag match. Dana Brooke comes out with Titus and Apollo to team with Ember Moon. Odd to have two babyface agaisnt a babyface and a heel. Sasha and Bayley dominate Dana in the corner before an ad break.

Ember tags in and hits a springboard crossbody on the face before tagging Dana in. She goes for a kick, but Sasha catches her foot and boots her in the face. Take 2 works better for Dana and she lands an enzuiguri. Sasha gets a victory roll out of hte corner to win. Dana is tired of losing and leaves Titus Worldwide.

Jinder comes down to medidate with Bobby Lashley, but before things can truly begin, Kevin Owens jumps Lashley. He hits the apron powerbomb while the fans chant “one more time!”

The Purge presents a recap of John Cena defeating Batista at Extreme Rules with a roll of duct tape.

A recap of the HBK-Taker segment airs and we’re told that HHH will be on Raw live next week as will Mick Foley. Corey updates us on The Shield being released from jail. Finn Balor comes down before Braun does with his guys. Drew and Dolph do Braun’s roar now – which is great.

Braun Strowman defeats Finn Balor

Braun headbutts and boots Balor, but Finn gets a brief edge off a sleeper. He stomps Braun and sends him to the floor for an ad break. Braun cranks the neck before clubbing his chest. Braun goes to steamroll him on the floor, but Balor counters with a slingblade. Braun goes for a corner charge, but eats a boot before landing it the second time.

Braun eats a shotgun dropkick and is locked in another sleeper before Bruan throws him in the corner. Braun misses his corner charge and his shoulder hits the post, sending Braun outside. Balor hits a flip dive onto everyone. Finn Balor locks on a triangle choke, but Braun hits a Rampage bomb and the powerslam to win.

Dolph and Drew send Balor in for another powerslam. They go to keep beating up Balor, but the Shield returns in the police van. We get a staredown between these groups before KO and more mid-carders come down to attack the Shield. Braun hits Roman with the steps twice. Dean is set up for a big boot by Drew on the ramp while Dolph superkicks Seth after he goes into glass and comes up bloody – covering one of the Ascension guys in blood.

Braun powerslams Roman on the floor before the heels roar to close the show.

Shawn Michaels set for next week’s WWE Raw

Shawn Michaels will return to Raw next week as WWE continues their build to The Undertaker/Triple H match at WWE Super Showdown.

Michaels was announced as appearing on Raw next week after a video aired talking about the match, which is being billed as the last time the two will face off. Notable figures such as Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarrett, Ric Flair, Mick Foley and Christian picked who they thought would win the match. Everyone except Christian picked the Undertaker to win.

Also announced for Super Showdown is John Cena teaming with Bobby Lashley to take on Elias and Kevin Owens, The Shield in a six man tag match and another confrontation between The Miz and Daniel Bryan, with the winner getting a WWE title match down the line. Shawn Michaels is advertised for the show, but will likely participate in a non-wrestling capacity.

WWE Super Showdown will take place on October 6 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia.

Shawn Michaels open to one more match

For the first time since retiring eight years ago, Shawn Michaels has expressed interest in returning to the ring.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Michaels now says that he doesn’t dismiss the idea of returning to the ring for a one-off.

“It would have to be done the right way and just for one match rather than something that ran for longer” he told them. “It could be possible but people would have to accept they wouldn’t be getting the Showstopper, Mr WrestleMania, and that I’m 52 years old now.”

Michaels last wrestled at WrestleMania 26 back in 2010, losing to the Undertaker in a streak vs. career match. After giving a farewell speech the next night on Raw, he has sporadically appeared on WWE programing in a non-wrestling capacity. He currently helps train wrestlers at the WWE Performance Center.

In the article, Michaels mentioned Daniel Bryan, Johnny Gargano and AJ Styles as people he would like to face if he were the Shawn Michaels of ten years ago.

Shawn Michaels to appear at WWE UK tournament show

Adding to the lineup for next month’s events at Royal Albert Hall, WWE has announced that Shawn Michaels will be making an appearance on night one.

What Michaels’ role will be hasn’t been revealed, aside from that he’ll be appearing “alongside Triple H” and obviously won’t be wrestling. Michaels currently works as a coach at WWE’s Performance Center.

The two nights at Royal Albert Hall will be taking place on June 18th and 19th. A tournament to determine the challenger for Pete Dunne’s WWE United Kingdom Championship on the 19th is also set for the opening night, along with Dunne teaming with Tyler Bate & Trent Seven against The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong).

The second night will have Dunne defending against the tournament winner, Aleister Black & Ricochet vs. EC3 & Velveteen Dream, and NXT North American, Women’s, and Tag Team title defenses.

Most of the first round matches for the tournament will be held at Download Festival on June 8-10, with the winners advancing to Royal Albert Hall. Those matchups are:

  • Jack Gallagher vs. Drew Gulak (already filmed at an NXT TV taping earlier this month)
  • Ashton Smith vs. Joseph Conners
  • Flash Morgan Webster vs. James Drake
  • Kenny Williams vs. Dave Mastiff
  • El Ligero vs. Travis Banks
  • Zack Gibson vs. Amir Jordan
  • Tucker vs. Joe Coffey
  • Tyson T-Bone vs. Jordan Devlin

January 29, 2001 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Royal Rumble review, Shawn Michaels to return, more

In what was one of the best PPVs in the history of the WWF, the company gave a big tease for the eventual Rock vs. Steve Austin match which at this point still looks to be the headliner at Wrestlemania, putting Austin over in the Rumble.

The show, featuring some strong highs and only a few lows, featured an early match of the year candidate in the Chris Jericho IC title win over Chris Benoit in a ladder match. The match was different than most ladder matches, and a change of pace from original thoughts. The original idea was to use multiple ladders, break ladders and revolve the match around ladder spots. Instead they went with an approach that would see them not have to top previous ladder matches for the multitude of crazy ladder spots by revolving much of the match around doing a wrestling match, but throwing in enough ladder spots that nobody felt they weren’t getting the gimmick. The five-match PPV aspect of the show also featured a second match along the same lines, with the Dudleys winning the tag titles over Edge & Christian in a match devoid of crazy spots, and while the table was teased, it was never actually used, but the teams still put on a solid opener.

The Miz, Becky Lynch & Shawn Michaels set for ‘The Marine 6’

Two members of the current roster and a Hall of Famer are set for roles in the next edition of WWE Studios’ “The Marine” franchise.

It was announced today that The Miz, Becky Lynch, and Shawn Michaels would have parts in “The Marine 6: Close Quarters.” Miz will reprise his role as Jake Carter, the lead character, and Michaels will also play a Marine. Lynch’s character has yet to be confirmed.

Miz has starred in the last three editions of the series, with the last four movies being direct-to-DVD releases. James Nunn, who directed “The Marine 5: Battleground,” is back for the sixth movie.

Here’s how WWE describes the next “Marine” installment: “When Jake Carter (The Miz) and fellow Marine Luke Trapper (Shawn Michaels) stumble upon a kidnapped girl being held prisoner by a dangerous gang of international criminals, they find themselves in the crosshairs as they try to save the girl and bring her kidnappers to justice.”

Production on the film will begin in London next Monday. With that, it would seem to help explain why Miz lost the Intercontinental Championship to Roman Reigns on Raw and Lynch was laid out by the debuting Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan on SmackDown this week.

Shawn Michaels to referee NXT title match in San Antonio

The night before NXT’s next TakeOver special, Shawn Michaels will return to the ring as a special guest referee in San Antonio, Texas.

WWE announced today that Michaels will be refereeing an NXT Championship match between Drew McIntyre and Adam Cole, which will take place as NXT comes to the Aztec Theatre for a house show on November 17th. McIntyre is set to defend his title in Houston against Andrade “Cien” Almas the next day.

The likely reason for Michaels being added to the show is because Ring of Honor has a show in San Antonio head-to-head that night.

Originally McIntyre vs. Cole was to headline the TakeOver show in Houston until the decision was made to revive the War Games concept. Cole will be teaming with Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly against SAnitY (Eric Young. Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dain) and The Authors of Pain & Roderick Strong in a three-team War Games match at TakeOver.

TakeOver: War Games will be the first of four WWE events to take place at the Toyota Center in Houston during Survivor Series weekend. The venue will host Survivor Series, Raw, and SmackDown over the following three nights.

Shawn Michaels: WWE asked me to wrestle AJ Styles at WrestleMania

While Shawn Michaels has maintained that he’s retired since last facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26 nearly seven years ago, it hasn’t been without WWE making efforts to lure him back to the ring.

That seemingly happened again this year, as Michaels said during an appearance on this week’s Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast that he turned down a potential match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33.

When asked about Styles vs. Shane McMahon at WrestleMania, Michaels said that WWE approached him when coming up with plans for Styles.

“I could’ve had that match,” Michaels told Roberts. “They did not have an opponent for AJ at WrestleMania.”

But Michaels reiterated that he was retired, telling WWE that he wished Styles was in the company 10 years ago. Michaels said that he has only seen Styles wrestle once, which was against John Cena during this year’s Royal Rumble, but thought that he would have a pretty decent match with Shane.

Michaels later said on the podcast that he’ll be involved with the WrestleMania 33 pre-show on the WWE Network, but called it unlikely that he’ll be doing anything else on the show unless something changes at the last minute.

WWE Raw live results: The Undertaker & Shawn Michaels return to TV

The Big Takeaway —

On a show dominated by Stephanie McMahon, the Undertaker returned to announce he was going to compete in the Royal Rumble. His mentioned that he was in New Orleans, the site of where the Streak died. Chris Jericho won the U.S. Championship by pinning Roman Reigns in a handicap match. It’s his first U.S. Championship reign. Shawn Michaels also returned to promote his first film role in “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone,” which led to a segment with Rusev, Jinder Mahal, Enzo & Big Cass. Stephanie gave Mick Foley a job review and seemed to tease firing him if the Undertaker showed up. But the results of the job review were never revealed.

Show Recap —

Stephanie McMahon was backstage with Mick Foley. She was going to give him a performance review, but she was concerned about whether the Undertaker would show up. She said the last time she saw the Undertaker, he was on SmackDown. Foley didn’t give a concrete answer as to whether Undertaker would be there, just saying that he thought he would show up. Seth Rollins walked in and told Stephanie he was going to enter the Royal Rumble. Braun Strowman barged in upset about Goldberg and Roman Reigns spearing him last week. He said he wanted either Goldberg or Reigns. Rollins got in his face and they have wound up in a pull apart brawl with referees coming in and plants flying. Stephanie growled that the Undertaker better be here tonight and ordered Foley to get things under control.

Reigns” handicap match with Owens and Jericho was supposed to lead off the show, but Strowman walked out before it could start. Owens and Jericho joined Strowman in a 3-on-1 beatdown. Rollins ran out with a chair for the save and gave Strowman a Van Daminator. Reigns brought in a chair of his own and gave Jericho and Owens chair shots to their backs. Reigns and Rollins gave Strowman a double chair shot to the back. Stephanie walked out and said the handicap match with Reigns vs. Owens & Jericho would take place later tonight. She ordered Rollins to face Strowman immediately.

Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman fought to a double countout (11:36)

Michael Cole said Sami Zayn had suffered several injuries from his last man standing match with Strowman and will miss tonight’s show. Strowman had the upper hand for two-thirds of the match and had some heel heat. Rollins made his comeback with a springboard knee. He attempted a blockbuster, but Strowman caught him in mid-air and placed him on the top rope. Rollins kicked him off the top rope and hit a frog splash for a two count. Strowman rolled out of the ring and leaned against the barricade. Rollins attempted a plancha, but Strowman moved and Rollins crashed into the boards. The referee counted them both out as Strowman dragged Rollins back to the ring.

Strowman threw Rollins back into the ring and grabbed a chair. But Rollins gave Strowman a baseball slide, where the chair hit Strowman’s leg. Strowman walked off.

Bayley and Sasha Banks talked backstage. Banks didn’t have her knee brace on after being on crutches last week. Banks said she was fine. Bayley said she has beaten Charlotte before and she knows she’ll do it again at the Royal Rumble. Banks said she would have Bayley’s back if Dana Brooke tried to interfere. Charlotte walked in and said Banks did a better acting job than Emma Stone telling Bayley that. Banks and Charlotte traded words over how they had defeated the other when Nia Jax attacked Banks from behind, kicking her bad knee. Charlotte hit Bayley with the belt. After Bayley and Banks had been laid out, Jax pushed Charlotte against a forklift and gave her a threatening look, then left.

Jack Gallagher defeated Drew Gulak (3:15)

On commentary, Austin Aries joked the victor of this match should use the winner’s purse to buy kneepads. Drew Gulak slammed Jack Gallagher against the ropes. Gulak went for a roaring elbow, but Gallagher laid in a stiff head butt and pinned him with a running dropkick.

Charly Caruso did an interview with Gallagher, where he offered an olive branch with Ariya Daivari. But instead of giving him a thrashing, he would offer a gentleman’s parlay. When Caruso asked what that was, he said it was a way for two gentlemen to settle their differences in a mutual way without violence.

Foley was looking for the Undertaker. Stephanie wanted to know where he was. Foley vowed he would be here, but Stephanie said Foley’s entire performance review hinges on if the Undertaker will show up. She gave him one hour.

Michaels came out. He said he’s missed the fans and coming out on Raw during this time of year. In January, things begin to pick up a little bit with the Royal Rumble around the corner. He said he had fond memories of the Royal Rumble and this year it was in his hometown of San Antonio. He brought up the 1997 Rumble, winning the world championship. He paused to politely quiet a fan who chanted something he didn’t like, saying he wasn’t going to throw a fastball that he hasn’t hit out of the ballpark. Fans chanted for one more match, but Michaels said they can’t pressure him.

He changed the subject to the “Resurrection of Gavin Stone,” his first film coming out on January 20. Rusev, Jinder Mahal and Lana came out. Rusev said if Michaels wanted the film to be successful, he needs to put Lana in it. Michaels said they have already finished production of it. Rusev suggested that he use CGI like they used in Star Wars. Michaels joked about Rusev being a Wookie. Fans chanted for “Sweet Chin Music.” Rusev said his wife was much more hot than Emma Stone and she should have won the Golden Globe last night. Michaels tried to make an off-script joke equating Golden Globes and Lana’s breasts that fell so flat, Rusev rejected it and got a bigger response. Rusev said everyone had forgotten about Michaels’ career.

Enzo Amore and Big Cass came out with Enzo in a wheelchair, but he limped into the ring. Enzo said the realest guy in the room right now was Michaels, and they played off calling Rusev and Mahal a couple of haters. Enzo said Lana was a great actress because every day she has to wake up next to Rusev and act like she wasn’t repulsed.

Enzo asked Cass what movie would he put the three of them in? Cass suggested “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” “Puss in Boots” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Blow’ and “The Pianist.”  Michaels and Enzo acted like Cass had said penis instead of “Pianist.” Michaels suggested “Dumb and Dumber.” Rusev should at them to stop and threatened to put Cass and Michaels in a wheelchair with Enzo. Cass challenged Rusev to another match. Rusev said if Cass wanted a match, he would get one—against Mahal. Michaels said he would stay at ringside and led the crowd in the “Suck It” chant.

Big Cass defeated Jinder Mahal (3:09)

Rusev interfered holding Cass trunks, which led to Michaels giving Rusev Sweet Chin Music. Emblematic of the previous segment, Cass dropped Mahal trying to deliver the East River Crossing at the finish and simply pinned him with the Empire Elbow.

They ran the same promo for the Makeover of Emmalina they’ve been running for the past month.

Neville defeated Lince Dorado via submission (2:58)

Neville is doing the same heel tactics that Christopher Daniels used in 2002 Ring of Honor, refusing to shake hands with opponents, breaking the code of the cruiserweights. He also has a new heel ring entrance sans pyro. Neville got the submission with the Rings of Saturn, which Aries called on commentary.

Post-match, Aries railroaded Dorado from behind and put him in the Rings of Saturn again until Rich Swann came out for the save. The two had a slugfest in the middle of the ring until Swann scored two high kicks and Neville went packing.

They showed highlights of Edge winning the 2010 Royal Rumble, just six months after suffering a torn ACL during a house show match against Jeff Hardy. Edge was shown on sound bites saying he marked the calendar to return at the Rumble just days after he suffered the injury.

A stagehand was trying to replace the plant that was thrown around earlier when Stephanie ordered him to leave. Banks and Bayley waked in and wanted to face Charlotte and Jax next week. Stephanie talked down to Banks saying Banks’ shirt may say “Legit boss,” but she was the only boss around here. Banks and Stephanie had a staredown. Stephanie ordered them to face Charlotte and Jax tonight and told them to get the hell out of her office.

Sheamus defeated Luke Gallows (10:17)

Cesaro and Karl Anderson were on commentary. Anderson kept bringing up his success in Japan, which Cesaro made fun of with lines that sounded pretty scripted. Anderson threw a water bottle at Cesaro McGregor-style and punched him on the ramp. Sheamus was distracted, and Luke Gallows hit a Fireman’s Carry Flapjack for a false finish. Then Cesaro made a comeback on the ramp, which distracted Gallows. Sheamus pinned him with the Brogue kick.

Reigns did an interview with Caruso saying it was his duty to defend the U.S. Championship, even if he wasn’t 100% and fighting against two men.

Foley was in the ring saying his matches against the Undertaker left him with scars that will stay with him for a lifetime. He called for him to come out, but didn’t. Foley, appearing on the verge of tears, acted like he was going to lose his job because the Undertaker didn’t show up. The lights went out, but Stephanie came out instead and apologized for the Undertaker not showing up.

She gave Foley his performance review saying with every step forward, he takes two steps back. She blamed him for Zayn getting injured and losing in the ratings to SmackDown a couple weeks ago. Foley started to apologize when the Undertaker’s music went off. He came out to a much bigger reaction than anyone on the show thus far. He did an entrance that seemed stalled out enough to wait until the Alabama-Clemson football game could reach halftime, because it was in the waning seconds when they finally got to the meat of this segment.

Undertaker said “I’m back. And I think it’s important that the world should know that I will be entering the Royal Rumble. I answer to no one. I go where I want, when I want. Nobody controls the Undertaker.” Then he got in Stephanie’s face and said “No one.” He said “Now I have returned to the city where I suffered my most devastating loss and where the streak came to its demise. But my journey continues to the Royal Rumble. I’ve dug 29 holes for 29 souls and I will be bringing the dark side to the Royal Rumble match. And after I win, I will return to the main event of WrestleMania and if anyone, and I mean anyone, stands in my way, they will rest in peace.” He left without Stephanie concluding Foley’s job review.

Caruso talked with Owens and Jericho. Owens ran down people who show up every so often, like the Undertaker and Goldberg. It made Owens angry when Goldberg destroyed the first Kevin Owens Show last week, and tonight they’ll beat Reigns. Jericho said with the condition that the United States is in, maybe it’s time for two Canadians to become the face of the U.S. Jericho called her “Chaz.”

Charlotte & Nia Jax defeated Sasha Banks & Bayley (8:49)

Bayley tried to pin Charlotte with a O’Conner Roll, but Charlotte tagged in Jax. Immediately, Jax gave Bayley and running body block, knocked a hampered Banks off the apron and pinned Bayley clean with a legdrop.

This was the sixth consecutive edition of Raw where Reigns has faced either Owens or Jericho.

Noam Dar gazed at himself in the mirror when Alicia Fox walked up. Dar hit on her again and leaned his cheek out and asked if she was ready to kiss him. Fox leaned out, then took him into her arms and ravaged him with a long kiss. Dar looked totally dazed and Fox said “Cedric was right. You can’t handle a real woman.”

The New Day came out. Titus O’Neal followed. Big E. asked “tight drawers” why he clocked Xavier Woods last week. O’Neal apologized and asked to join the New Day again. Woods said last week when he said his DMs were open on Twitter, he didn’t mean for O’Neal. Kofi Kingston said they found footage when O’Neal looked more like a bull in a china shop.

Then showed footage of him in 2010 running obstacles on NXT trying to carry a keg of beer, but crashing face first on the floor. New Day all laughed. Big E said it looked like a Life Alert commercial “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” Big E said O’Neal needs to worry about redemption. Kingston unveiled a new beer keg with New Day colors. It was a keg filled with the greatest sports juice of all time “Booty Juice.” The tag line was “Booty Juice, it Makes Sure Your Throat is Loose.”

They challenged O’Neal to carry it around the ring in 16 seconds. O’Neal carried it around the ring but dropped the keg before he crossed the finish line, just like several college football players have done in real life recently. They even showed a replay, which got O’Neal mad. He shoved Kingston. It led to Kingston challenging O’Neal to a match.

Kofi Kingston defeated Titus O’Neil (3:33)

They teased the finish of last week’s match between Woods and O’Neil. O’Neil threw Kingston to the floor, but Big E. and Woods caught him. O’Neil chased Kingston in the ring, where Kingston gave him the Trouble in Paradise for the pin.

They officially announced WrestleMania is coming to New Orleans again in 2018.

Brock Lesnar returns to Raw next week.

This was the sixth consecutive Raw where Reigns has wrestled either Jericho or Owens in some form. Before the match, Reigns jumped Jericho and Owens on the floor. The shark cage that Jericho will be locked in at the Royal Rumble was on the stage, and Reigns tried to lock Jericho inside it. But Owens attacked Reigns from behind and got Reigns free. Jericho and Owens threw Reigns into the cage, which crashed to the floor. Owens sent Reigns into the ring steps. Reigns sold his left arm as the opening bell sounded following several minutes of brawling.

Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens defeated Roman Reigns in a handicap match to win the U.S. Championship. Jericho was awarded the championship after scoring the fall. (8:15)

Jericho got busted up hardway somehow, but they didn’t stop the match. Reigns gave Jericho a spear, but Owens pulled him out of the ring. Reigns gave Owens the Drive-By outside the ring. Jericho went for a springboard dropkick, but he jumped right into a Superman Punch. Owens held Reigns leg outside the ring, and Jericho gave him a Codebreaker. Then Owens power bombed Reigns onto the edge of the ring apron. They slowly rolled Reigns back into the ring. Owens threw Reigns into a Jericho Codebreaker, leading to the clean pin. This was the only heavyweight championship in WWE that Jericho has never held, until tonight.

Shawn Michaels & The Undertaker to appear on Raw in January

WWE officials have confirmed that Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are being advertised locally for the January 9th Raw episode in New Orleans and will be appearing on the show.

The appearance is expected to build something for the Royal Rumble three weeks later in San Antonio.

Undertaker was largely expected on the show in some form, perhaps in the Rumble itself. The only other role that would make sense, a match with A.J. Styles, seems to be set for John Cena instead. The destination for WrestleMania was as of a few days ago most likely Undertaker vs. Cena, but at the time Vince McMahon was not 100 percent with that match but leaning in that direction.

A Michaels appearance at the Rumble in some form was expected because it was being held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Michaels is the biggest wrestling star who is a native of San Antonio, and is currently working for WWE as a coach in Orlando, Florida.

It is unclear what role Michaels will play in the show. Michaels retired in 2010 after losing to The Undertaker at WrestleMania and has insisted for years that he wouldn’t wrestle in another match. There are a number of different roles, from referee to enforcer to a second where he could be a major part of the show if he’s not wrestling. Styles had said that he would have liked to face Michaels, but with Cena earmarked for that match, that doesn’t appear likely.

Shawn Michaels teaching class at WWE Performance Center

Trainees at WWE’s Performance Center will be learning from one of the most accomplished in-ring performers in professional wrestling history.

Dave Meltzer has confirmed that Shawn Michaels recently began teaching a class at the Performance Center, taking over for Terry Taylor who is out after having neck surgery. The length of Michaels’ stay hasn’t been confirmed, but he moved his family from Texas to Florida for the role within the company.

Michaels has previously been involved in training wrestlers, operating the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy that notably produced Daniel Bryan and Brian Kendrick.

Michaels retired as an active performer in 2010, concluding his Hall of Fame career in a loss to the Undertaker at WrestleMania 26. He has maintained a role with the company since and has made sporadic appearances on television. He most recently appeared at WrestleMania 32, where he banded together with Steve Austin and Mick Foley in a physical confrontation with the League of Nations.

WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels had an incredible career — easily one of the top ten of all history in pro wrestling — but what about the other half of the Midnight Rockers?

Early on, many thought Marty Jannetty might be the standout of the duo and he certainly had the skill. He began his career as Marty Oates, a kayfabe member of the Oates wrestling family from Georgia. So what happened? Where did it go wrong? Did it go wrong? He has had a wild career with many peaks and valleys and today, host Karl Stern, takes a look at the other Rocker: Marty Jannetty.

Jan 25, 1999 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Shawn Michaels potential career ending back surgery, WCW Souled Out

The career as an active wrestler of Shawn Michaels appears to have largely ended, certainly as any kind of a regular in-ring performer, stemming from the back injury suffered at the 1998 Royal Rumble.

Michaels underwent major back surgery on 1/12 in San Antonio, after which his doctor was quoted in the local newspaper as well as gave the private opinion to Michaels and the WWF that the injuries to one of his discs in his back were more severe than originally believed and that his wrestling days were over. Michaels had largely been telling friends even before undergoing the operation that he felt he had maybe five matches left in him.
