John Cena on filming The Marine: ‘My heart wasn’t in it’

John Cena didn’t take ‘The Marine’ seriously.

While talking at the Boston Fan Expo recently, the former WWE Champion spoke about his first foray into film, starring in The Marine. Although he was the featured star and was promoted heavily during WWE television at the time, Cena recalled he had other things on his mind.

“I didn’t take it seriously. The movie came out in 2006, and I believe it was shot in 2005. I wanted to be world champion. The movie was fun, but I wanted to be elsewhere,” he explained. “That’s a huge takeaway because for me, if you’re not present, then you’re dealing with constant distractions. My heart wasn’t in it.”

“Now, when I’m on set, I’m there like I would be in a WWE arena, and I’m passionate about my work. You need to be present, and that was my biggest takeaway,” he added.

Cena would go on to win a world title in WWE a record-breaking seventeen times, with the most recent title reign starting at this year’s WrestleMania by defeating Cody Rhodes. The two met in a rematch at SummerSlam, with Rhodes winning back the title. Cena has also made a successful transition into film and television, with a second season of Peacemaker premiering on August 21.

The Marine would go on to earn $32 million at the box office and would span several sequels with the most recent film, The Marine 6: Close Quarters, releasing in 2018.

October 23, 2006 Observer Newsletter: The Marine, UFC 64

It was a week of important numbers in wrestling and MMA, and the end result of some of the numbers and reactions would be surprising. With the exception of Smackdown and Ultimate Fighter, every major show last week featured something big, whether it be women stripping, an old-fashioned grudge match, or a multi-brand show. But of all the numbers, don’t kid yourself, the most important is:

$7,138,774 – That’s the first week gross for John Cena’s movie vehicle, “The Marine.” Hollywood projections going into the weekend ranged from $6.4 million to $8 million, so this finished right in the middle. It was No. 6 for the weekend. On the surface, the number sounds bad. It’s more then the “See No Evil” first weekend ($4,581,233), but it also played in 2,545 theaters as compared to 1,270 for “See No Evil,” so the average per screen of $2,805 was less than “See No Evil’s” $3,644. The key is next weekend. “See No Evil” had more legs than most predicted, and ended up doing 3.3 times its first weekend.

The Miz, Becky Lynch & Shawn Michaels set for ‘The Marine 6’

Two members of the current roster and a Hall of Famer are set for roles in the next edition of WWE Studios’ “The Marine” franchise.

It was announced today that The Miz, Becky Lynch, and Shawn Michaels would have parts in “The Marine 6: Close Quarters.” Miz will reprise his role as Jake Carter, the lead character, and Michaels will also play a Marine. Lynch’s character has yet to be confirmed.

Miz has starred in the last three editions of the series, with the last four movies being direct-to-DVD releases. James Nunn, who directed “The Marine 5: Battleground,” is back for the sixth movie.

Here’s how WWE describes the next “Marine” installment: “When Jake Carter (The Miz) and fellow Marine Luke Trapper (Shawn Michaels) stumble upon a kidnapped girl being held prisoner by a dangerous gang of international criminals, they find themselves in the crosshairs as they try to save the girl and bring her kidnappers to justice.”

Production on the film will begin in London next Monday. With that, it would seem to help explain why Miz lost the Intercontinental Championship to Roman Reigns on Raw and Lynch was laid out by the debuting Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan on SmackDown this week.
