Tony Khan says Taz’s Hardcore Hall of Fame ceremony delayed to next week

Taz’s 2300 Arena tribute is being pushed back slightly.

During Friday’s ROH Death Before Dishonor media scrum, Tony Khan said that Taz had asked if they could move the Hardcore Hall of Fame ceremony to this coming Wednesday’s Dynamite instead of Collision so more of his family could attend.

“He asked for more time to get his family and everybody lined up,” Khan explained. “It’s for him. It’s the least we can do for Taz….it’s a real honor for us to do that for him here in this building. Taz is an indespensible part of the team. ”

Khan surprised Taz on Wednesday by announcing that he would be the latest to be inducted into the 2300 Arena’s Hardcore Hall of Fame. The arena is better known to longtime fans as the ECW Arena, where Taz was a major star in the 1990s.

Here are notes from Saturday’s press conference with Paul Walter Hauser, Shane Taylor Promotions, ROH Champion Bandido, ROH Women’s Champion Athena, and Khan all took questions from the media.

Paul Walter Hauser

  • He took time to praise Khan, saying he provided so many jobs to people. To see Tony create these jobs and this world, he is indebted as a fan. Tony Khan said with his performance tonight Paul Walter Hauser proved that he is a wrestler.
  • He said that he felt more equipped for this match than previous matches, saying AEW cares a lot about performer safety.
  • Hauser said he wanted to pay tribute to people like Mick Foley and Dustin Rhodes by doing a rolling senton.
  • He said he didn’t even feel the tacks connect to the back of his head, he felt the powerbomb and had the wind knocked out of him and as a result didn’t have to sell much.
  • Khan during this segment put over QT Marshall, saying he’s one of the most intelligent people in wrestling.

Shane Taylor Promotions

  • Taylor said our goal was to do our best and win titles and we proved that tonight.
  • The Infantry said that the gear they wore tonight was a tribute to New Jack. Shane Taylor thanked the city of Philadelphia, saying they recognize real rather than “bull****.”
  • Taylor said out of all of his accomplishments, this was the most important title win of his 18 year career because of the people he’s involved with now. They are the most complete unit in pro wrestling.

ROH World Champion Bandido

  • Bandido says after two years out, since he came back to AEW and ROH, it’s been like a dream. He’s excited to be part of AEW and ROH.
  • He said being ROH Champion now feels incredible. He said he would be back to wrestle during the residency and wanted a Philly cheesesteak.

ROH Women’s Champion Athena

  • Regarding her match with Mina Shirakawa, Athena said it was tough, it was hard, but she is the ROH Women’s Champion. She considered Mina a great opponent but wished she did less dancing.
  • They pushed Athena was nearing 1000 days as champion.
  • Athena said that ROH was the be all growing up, bringing up names like Samoa Joe and Bryan Danielson. She said now not only is she working with them, she’s proven she is better than them, this platform is where the best wrestle. AEW is where the best wrestle but ROH is where people grind and become the workhorses.
  • Athena says she’s prepared for Mercedes Mone if she is looking to collect a tenth belt. She said she is also changing her mentality for a future Toni Storm rematch.

Tony Khan

  • First question asked if we’ll see AEW Dark, Elevation, and ROH content on HBO Max. Khan talked about the success of AEW on HBO Max. More content would be great and they are trying to put up more free content as well, mentioning recent ROH content being put up on YouTube.
  • He mentioned that he made the decision mid-show to make the show free due to streaming issues on some browsers. All current Honor Club subscribers will get a month free as a result of the error. He said that will cost a lot of money, up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. But it’s okay, because they made new fans tonight.
  • Asked if they’ll return to the 2300 Arena. Fans have been excellent, the environment is awesome. He wants to do more shows here and loves Philadelphia.
  • Tony Khan said he was figuring out who was cleared before booking more matches for tomorrow’s Collision.
  • Someone asked if we could see more of Adam Priest. Khan said he was a big fan and scouted him at a recent show, saying he was impressive in the British J Cup. Great competitor.
  • He mentioned that Anthony Henry asked for the night off and that’s why the Workhorsemen weren’t on the show.
  • Tony Khan suggested we could see ROH Women’s Pure title tournament matches on Collision, since ROH is taped during these shows.

New ROH champions crowned at Death Before Dishonor

New Six-Man Tag Team Champions rule the ROH trios division following Friday’s show in Philadelphia.

The Shane Taylor Promotions trio of Taylor, Shawn Dean, and Carlie Bravo defeated Sammy Guevara, Ross Von Erich, and Marshall Von Erich to win the ROH Six-Man Tag Team titles on Friday night’s Death Before Dishonor event.

Guevara took the place of the injured Dustin Rhodes in defending the Six-Man belts on Friday’s show, and pulled double duty as he also defended the ROH Tag Team titles on the program. Guevara and Rhodes had held the ROH Tag titles, but Guevara chose Rush as a replacement for his injured partner in a defense against The Outrunners. Guevara turned heel on The Von Erichs in the aftermath of the Tag title defense, aligning with Rush’s LFI stable.

In the show’s other title bouts, Athena retained the Women’s World title over Mina Shirakawa, Bandido retained the World title over Hechicero, plus Lee Moriarty retained the Pure Championship over Xelhua.

Sammy Guevara reveals surprise tag partner at ROH Death Before Dishonor

Sammy Guevara has a new tag team partner.

After losing the ROH Six-Man Tag Team title match earlier in the show, Sammy Guevara and new tag team partner Rush defeated The Outrunners to win the ROH Tag Team titles, with Guevara scoring the win with a swanton bomb.

Following the match, Dralistico came out and celebrated with Rush and Guevara. The Von Erichs, who partnered with Guevara earlier in the night, came out and questioned him. Guevara acted like he wanted everyone to get along, but instead turned against the Von Erich as Rush, Dralistico, and LFI beat them down to boos.

Guevara previously had held the ROH Tag Team titles with Dustin Rhodes, who had also held the Six-Man titles with The Von Erics. Both sets of titles were vacated after Rhodes underwent surgery and new champions were decided at Death Before Dishonor. However, Guevara and the Von Erichs came up short against Shane Taylor Promotions who walked away with the ROH Six-Man titles.

Since returning to television, Guevara has mostly worked for Ring of Honor, aligning himself with Rhodes. However both he and Rhodes competed in a four-way at All In where Dustin won the TNT title. Guevara seemed upset about the loss at the time, but ultimately shook Rhodes’ hand after the match.

ROH Death Before Dishonor airing for free due to technical issues

ROH Death Before Dishonor is currently free.

Tony Khan announced that due to streaming issues with service provider Brightcove, he has chosen to stream ROH’s event live for free on YouTube.

“Due to issues with service provider Brightcove, who haven’t yet given a timeframe for stream repair, I’ve put #ROHDBD streaming FREE on the ROH YouTube live NOW.  For this inconvenience of tonight’s stream issue, we’ll offer a free one-month credit to all current ROH subscribers,” he wrote.

During the early portion of the main card, ROH noted on social media that there were issues viewing the show on Chrome and Firefox browsers, but those who use Safari or the ROH App were fine.

“We are aware that there is an issue with viewing on the browsers CHROME + FIREFOX, our service provider Brightcove is working on a solution now. You can view on Safari + the ROH App, without service disruption. We apologize for any inconvenience,” they wrote.

Top matches for tonight’s show include Bandido defending the ROH World Championship against Hechicero and Athena defending the ROH Women’s Championship against Mina Shirakawa.

First wrestler advances in ROH Women’s Pure title tournament

Queen Aminata has advanced.

Aminata defeated Taya Valkyre in the opening match of the ROH Women’s Pure Title tournament at Friday’s Death Before Dishonor. The finish had Valkyrie go to the ropes, only to found out that per Pure title rules, she had no more rope breaks left. Aminata used the opportunity to strike Valkyrie with a headbutt then covered for the win.

After the match, Deonna Purrazzo came out and had a confrontation with Aminata, who extended her hand. Purrazzo brought Aminata further in, having a stardown with her. Aminata responded by sticking out her tongue, which caused Purrazzo to back off.

The brackets for the tournament were finally released by Tony Khan on Friday, shortly before the start of Friday’s event. Aminata will face the winner between Purrazzo and Trish Adora. On the other side of the brackets, Billie Starkz will face CMLL’s Olympia while Serena Deeb will face Yuka Sakazaki.

The tournament was originally set to be held earlier this year, with the winner being crowned at ROH Supercard of Honor. However, injuries prevented the tournament from moving forward until now.

Tony Khan reveals bracket for ROH Women’s Pure Championship tournament

The brackets for the Women’s Pure title tournament is finally out.

Tony Khan revealed the participants for the upcoming tournament, which begins with Death Before Dishonor tonight when Queen Aminata takes on Taya Valkyrie. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the first-ever ROH Women’s Pure Champion.

The winner between Valkyrie and Aminata will face the winner between Deonna Purrazzo and Trish Adora. On the other side of the brackets, Billie Starkz will take on CMLL’s Olympia while Serena Deeb will face Yuka Sakazaki. It has not been announced when the finals will take place.

A tournament to crown the first-ever champion was announced back in April. However, various injuries in the AEW/ROH women’s roster has prevented the company from holding the tournament, with Tony Khan choosing to push the tournament back. The first-ever champion was set to be crowned back at Supercard of Honor in May.

Purrazzo, Aminata, Valkyrie, and Deeb were originally announced for the tournament. Leila Grey’s name was also mentioned, but was not featured in the brackets.

Sammy Guevara to have mystery partner for ROH Death Before Dishonor title match

With Dustin Rhodes out of action for a while, Sammy Guevara will have a new partner starting with ROH Death Before Dishonor.

Tony Khan has announced that Guevara and a yet-to-be-revealed partner will defend the ROH Tag Team titles against The Outrunners (Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd) at Friday night’s event in Philadelphia. This won’t be the only title defense for Guevara that night, though, with Khan also confirming that Guevara will join Ross & Marshall Von Erich for an ROH Six-Man Tag Team title defense against Shane Taylor Promotions (Shane Taylor, Shawn Dean & Carlie Bravo).

Rhodes — who has not wrestled since the end of July — underwent a double knee replacement last week. He was a double champion in ROH, holding the promotion’s Tag Team titles with Guevara and the Six-Man belts with The Von Erichs.

Despite the injury, the 56-year-old Rhodes has promised that this will not be the end of his in-ring career.
