Finals set for AEW Grand Slam World title eliminator tournament

The finals for the AEW Grand Slam World title eliminator tournament are now set.

Roderick Strong will face Samoa Joe in the finals that take place this coming Wednesday on Dynamite. The winner of this match will then advance to AEW Grand Slam on September 20, where they will face MJF for the AEW World Championship.

Saturday’s Collision saw Strong defeat Darby Allin. Distractions from AR Fox and Nick Wayne, who are not on the same page, caused Allin to become distracted and ultimately lose the match after Strong connected with the end of heartache. Samoa Joe defeated Penta El 0 M after Penta went for the fear factor, but Joe countered with the coquina clutch for the submission.

Additionally, Big Bill will challenge Jon Moxley for the AEW International title this Wednesday. Ricky Starks confronted Bryan Danielson on Saturday, with things still unresolved between the two following their strap match at All Out. Big Bill ended up attacking Danielson. However, Jon Moxley came out to even the odds. Regardless, the segment ended with both Starks and Bill standing tall.

Here is everything announced so far for next week’s Dynamite:

  • Grand Slam World Title eliminator tournament finals: Roderick Strong vs. Samoa Joe
  • AEW International title: Jon Moxley defends against Big Bill
  • 4-way Women’s title eliminator match: Britt Baker vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Nyla Rose vs. Toni Storm
  • Hangman Page vs. Brian Cage
  • Don Callis to reveal his next masterpiece

AEW Collision live results: Grand Slam eliminator tournament semifinals

The finals of the AEW Grand Slam eliminator tournament will be set following tonight’s AEW Collision from Cleveland, Ohio.

In two semifinal matches, Samoa Joe will face Penta El Zero Miedo while Darby Allin takes on Roderick Strong. The winners will square off on this Wednesday’s Dynamite with the winner facing MJF at this month’s Dynamite Grand Slam from Queens, NY.

AEW International Champion Jon Moxley will defend his title for the second time this week as he faces Action Andretti.

In an open challenge, TBS Champion Kris Statlander will look to keep her win streak and title defense streak going.

In eight-man action, Bullet Club Gold (Jay White, Juice Robinson, Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn) take on the team of Gravity, Metalik, Aerostar & Dios Del Inframundo.

The show will also feature speaking segments from Bryan Danielson, AEW Women’s Champion Saraya and Ruby Soho, and AEW Trios Champions The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn.

***********

We got our cold open promos from the four men in the Grand Slam Eliminator Tournament. Elton John played us in before Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness welcomed us to the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio.

AEW International Title Match – Jon Moxley defeated Action Andretti to retain

A fortunate coincidence that Moxley’s Collision debut came in Ohio. The announcers made it clear that Orange Cassidy’s reign as champion elevated the title to main event status. Having a bonafide main event player in Moxley hold the title only solidifies those statements. Keep an eye on Moxley’s knee, as that could be a target for future challengers.

In an inset promo during his entrance, Moxley wished Andretti luck, but noted that fighting Moxley in Ohio is like fighting Superman on the surface of the sun. Moxley sent Andretti retreating to the floor after a chop. Andretti fought back with chops of his own, but Moxley sent him to the floor again with a boot to the face. Moxley brought Andretti back into the ring, but Andretti cut him off with a handspring before following Moxley to the floor with a dive.

Moxley peppered Andretti with headbutts before throwing him back into the ring but jammed his knee on a move attempt off of the ropes. Andretti sent Moxley to the floor and hit a split-legged moonsault to the outside. Andretti side-stepped a Moxley charge, with Moxley sending himself into the stairs as Kelly sent us to a picture-in-picture commercial.

Back from the commercial, Moxley side-stepped an Andretti dive before hitting a dive of his own. The announcers talked about this being Moxley’s third title match of the week as Moxley nursed his knee. Andretti made some space, but springboarded directly into a Moxley cutter for a nearfall. Moxley caught Andretti on a handspring elbow attempt with a choke, but Andretti hit a dropkick and a falcon arrow for a nearfall.

Andretti landed on his feet on a German suplex attempt off the second rope. They traded shotgun dropkicks before Andretti hit a corkscrew splash on Moxley for a nearfall. Andretti went for the BCC stomps, but Moxley used his own feet to spin Andretti into a rear naked choke to score the win and retain the title.

In a pre-tape, Roderick Strong talked about his friendship with Adam Cole through their days in the Ring of Honor locker room. Strong said that Cole had changed over their time in AEW, especially with his friendship with MJF. Strong said that Cole abandoned him when Strong needed him the most. He said he was still willing to make amends with Cole, and that he just wanted his friend back.

We got a recap of Samoa Joe and MJF’s confrontation from Dynamite.

AEW TBS Title Match – Kris Statlander defeated Robyn Renegade (w/ Charlette Renegade) to retain

The Renegades looked good here, and Jade Cargill’s return sets up an easy rematch for one of AEW’s big upcoming shows.

Statlander was in firm control early on, stuffing a monkey flip and turning it into a German suplex. Charlette Renegade cut off a running Statlander, allowing Robyn to hit a boot in the corner to take control. Charlette choked Statlander on the ropes as Robyn took the referee’s attention.

Statlander fired back up, hitting a Blue Thunder Bomb for a nearfall. Renegade missed a big boot in the corner, allowing Statlander to hit an elevator drop. After hitting Charlette with a forearm to knock her off the apron, Statlander scored the win with an O’Connor Roll.

After the match, Charlette chop-blocked Statlander, leading to a double-team beatdown. Jade Cargill made her return, getting a huge pop in the process. Cargill took out both Renegades before helping Statlander to her feet. Cargill then snatched Statlander up and dropped her with Jaded before posing with the TBS Title.

Backstage, Renee Paquette was with Saraya & Ruby Soho. Soho was upset about Toni Storm costing her the TBS Title at All Out, but Saraya calmed her down. Saraya said that she would return to Arthur Ashe Stadium – the building she debuted in – as champion.

Tony Schiavone sat down backstage with Claudio Castagnoli & Eddie Kingston. Castagnoli claimed not to remember how the issues between him and Kingston started, with Kingston saying that he was lying. Kingston said the problems started with Castagnoli leaving the independents before giving Kingston a match and doing business. Kingston challenged Castagnoli to a title-for-title match at Grand Slam, with both the ROH World Championship and the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship on the line. Castagnoli accepted with one caveat. Kingston had to shake his hand once Castagnoli beat him. The heat for that match should be off the charts.

Bullet Club Gold (Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn, & Juice Robinson) defeated Aero Star, Dios Del Inframundo, Gravity

You may remember Dios Del Inframundo as Drago from Lucha Underground. He changed his name after his recent departure from AAA. Robinson sat down “Cardblade” and a plaque naming Robinson the “Collision Cowboy of the Month.” The Gunns took care of Gravity and Inframundo before Robinson tagged in to a huge reaction. Andrade El Idolo was seen watching backstage as the luchadors gained an advantage over Robinson. Austin Gunn hooked Robinson’s waist on an Irish Whip, with Colton Gunn taking down Aero Star and Gravity with lariats as we went to the commercial.

Back from the commercial, Gravity fought to make the tag to Aero Star. Aero Star ran wild, using unique rope moves to take out the Gunns. But the Gunns came back to take control, taking out Aero Star and Gravity before feeding Inframundo to Robinson. Robinson scored the win with his DDT variant.

In a pre-tape, CJ Perry talked about being Miro’s first sacrifice on his road to redemption. She calls Miro stubborn for not accepting the help she offered at All Out. She accepted that Miro had to go down his road, but she had to take her own road as well. She said that at one point, she was the hottest manager in wrestling and that maybe it was time for her to re-take that mantle.

The Dark Order had some type of commercial at the merch stand. It was odd.

The Acclaimed talked about their recent World Tour, which started in London and continued to Chicago. They said that they would be in New York for Grand Slam, before taking over the world.

Rey Fenix (w/ Alex Abrahantes) defeated Angelico (w/ Serpentico)

In an inset promo, Fenix said that he was looking for revenge against Moxley for taking him out before All In. Fenix quickly sent Angelico to the floor, where he hit a tope suicida. Serpentico tried to set up a misdirection, but Fenix hit Angelico with a big kick off the apron. Angelico took control of Fenix’s arm before hitting a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Fenix came back with a lucha armdrag, a double stomp, and a frog splash for a nearfall. Angelico caught Fenix with a flash pin, but Fenix kicked out and dropped Angelico with a superkick. Fenix walked the ropes to boot Serpentico off the apron before hitting a rolling cutter to Angelico. Fenix scored the win with the Fenix Driver.

Tony Schiavone was backstage with FTR. Harwood said that to be the best team, they needed to defend the titles against the best teams. He announced the FTR World Tag Team Challenge, where they would defend their titles against any young team that wanted to challenge.

AEW World Title Grand Slam Eliminator Tournament Semi-Final Match – Roderick Strong (w/ Mike Bennett & Matt Taven) defeated Darby Allin (w/ Nick Wayne & AR Fox)

This match was everything I hoped it would be, with Strong ragdolling Allin around and destroying him with backbreakers. The Allin/Wayne/Fox story continues, and with the WrestleDream PPV in Seattle looming, I assume we’ll get more to this story.

As Allin was skating his way to the ring, Luchasaurus jumped him. Christian Cage said that Allin was only in this tournament because he was never going to win the TNT Title. Cage said that Allin wouldn’t win any title in AEW as long as Christian was around before Luchasaurus sent Allin into a metal door. Strong celebrated what he believed to be a forfeit win, but Allin hobbled his way to the ring with Nick Wayne rooting him on. Strong quickly dropped Allin with a backbreaker. Allin fought back, sending Strong to the floor before following him outside with a suicide dive.

Back from a commercial, Strong sent Allin back first into the post and the barricade. The crowd rattled Strong with Adam Hates You chants, allowing Allin to catch Strong with a guillotine choke in the ropes. Allin turned another backbreaker into a crucifix pin for a nearfall, then caught Strong with a Code Red for a nearfall. Allin went for the submission he used to beat Nick Wayne on Dynamite, but Strong countered it into an STF.

Allin got to the ropes, so Strong brought Allin to the top rope. Allin clawed at Strong’s back, but Strong shoved Allin into the top of the ringpost. Strong hit a sick backbreaker on the top turnbuckle, sending Allin tumbling to the floor. Strong got Allin into the ring, but only scored a nearfall.

Back from another commercial, Allin hit Strong with a Stundog Millionaire on the apron before hitting a Coffin Drop to Strong on the floor. The Kingdom menaced Wayne on the floor before AR Fox backed him up, much to Wayne’s chagrin. Back in the ring, Strong hit a Sick Kick, but Allin countered the End of Heartache into a Scorpion Death Drop. No cover due to Allin’s back being battered.

Taven got on the apron, with Wayne pulling him off the apron. Fox went to dive on Taven, but Bennett yanked him out of the way. Fox landed on Wayne by accident, and all the while Allin landed on Strong’s knees on a Coffin Drop attempt. Strong hit the End of Heartache to score the win and punch his ticket to the final.

Powerhouse Hobbs spoke about how the Miro chapter of the Book of Hobbs was still unfinished.

Lexy Nair was backstage with Keith Lee. Lee spoke about wanting to do things solo and offered his opponents a piece of advice: run.

We got a video package on The Righteous, the team of Vincent, Dutch, & Stu Grayson.

Tony Schiavone welcomed Bryan Danielson to the ring. Danielson said that he promised his six-year-old daughter that he would start wrapping up his career once she turned seven. He said that he wouldn’t go quietly into the night, and would kick everyone’s head in. He said that this would be the most epic year of his career. He made a challenge for October 1st at WrestleDream. He wanted to wrestle the man everyone called the best technical wrestler in the world, Zack Sabre Jr.

Ricky Starks & Big Bill made their way to the ring, with Starks noting how the spotlight escaped him again. Starks noted that he went from being hungry to being greedy and that Danielson never tapped him out. Danielson said that he wasn’t done yet, and noted that in order to be with the Blackpool Combat Club, you had to bleed with them. Big Bill then jumped Danielson. Starks pulled Bill off of Danielson before jumping on Danielson himself. Jon Moxley made his way to the ring, but Big Bill dropped him with a big boot. Starks choked out Danielson with a BCC t-shirt, with Kevin Kelly wondering if that shirt was going to be offered to Starks before the attack. Starks and Big Bill celebrated, leaving Moxley and Danielson lying.

We got a rundown of the Dynamite card, with the addition of Jon Moxley vs. Big Bill for the International Championship. We also got a rundown of the Collision card for next week, with FTR vs. The Iron Savages announced. Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. was made official for the WrestleDream PPV.

Tony Schiavone was backstage with Big Bill. Bill said that he just beat Moxley’s ass and would do it again in Moxley’s hometown. The Lucha Brothers entered the frame, with Fenix noting that he was next in line for Moxley. Bill told them to worry about Penta’s match against Samoa Joe.

AEW World Title Grand Slam Eliminator Tournament Semi-Final Match – Samoa Joe defeated Penta El Zero Miedo (w/ Alex Abrahantes)

A decent main event, but the lesser of the two tournament matches tonight. It set up a Dynamite main event with history that set a lot of the current main event picture in motion.

Jim Ross joined commentary for this main event. Joe headbutted Penta after a Cero Miedo taunt. Penta came back with a superkick before Joe shoulder blocked him down. Joe telegraphed a back body drop, leading to Penta sending him to the floor with a dropkick.

Joe sidestepped a baseball slide, but Penta caught him with a Slingblade on the floor. The two got into a chop battle on the floor before Joe ran Penta into the barricade. They traded more chops before Joe poked Penta in the eyes. Penta sent Joe into the barricade before pulling out a table before the commercial break.

Back from the commercial, Joe avoided a Penta double stomp and dropped him with a back elbow. Penta fought out of a chinlock, but Joe shut him down and locked in another submission. Joe hit a strike combination, ending with a knee drop for a nearfall. Joe hit his corner splash and enzuigiri. Penta fought out of the Muscle Buster before firing up. Penta hit a backstabber out of the corner for a nearfall.

Penta booted Joe in the face but jumped right into a powerslam for a nearfall. Penta lit up Joe with strikes before landing a superkick in the corner for a nearfall. Penta landed a pair of kicks for a nearfall before going for the arm snap, but Joe muscled out and landed a big combination ending in a senton for a nearfall.

Penta sent Joe to the floor, where he landed a kick and a dive. Penta went for another dive, but Joe sidestepped him, sending Penta through Chekov’s table. Penta kicked out of the subsequent cover and even had the Fear Factor set up, but Joe flipped Penta into the rear naked choke for the submission win. On Dynamite, it’ll be Roderick Strong vs. Samoa Joe, the man who hurt his neck to begin with back in July. The winner gets the World Title match against MJF at Grand Slam.

Roderick Strong, Darby Allin advance in AEW Grand Slam eliminator tournament

Darby Allin and Roderick Strong have advanced to the semifinals of the Grand Slam World Title Eliminator Tournament

Allin defeated Nick Wayne in the main event on Wedensday’s Dynamite. Earlier in the show, Roderick Strong defeated Trent Beretta. The two will now advance to Collision on Saturday, where the winner will move to to the finals on next Wednesday’s Dynamite.

Rampage will see two more quarterfinal matches. Samoa Joe will face Jeff Hardy, while Penta El 0 M will face Jay Lethal. The winners of those matches will also face one another in the semifinals on Collision.

The winner of the tournament will face off against MJF for the AEW World Championship at Grand Slam on September 20. On Wednesday’s Dynamite, Samoa Joe and MJF traded words after the two had an in-ring altercation at All Out this past Sunday. The segment ended with Samoa Joe attacking MJF and targeting his injured neck, with Adam Cole making the save.

Roderick Strong ran into Adam Cole as he was heading up the ramp as the two exchanged words.

Roderick Strong: AEW reminds me of what I loved about ROH

Roderick Strong commented on his decision to sign with AEW during a recent appearance on the AEW Unrestricted podcast.

The 40-year-old had been with WWE from 2016 until his contract ran out late last year. Strong debuted for AEW in April, coming to Adam Cole’s rescue as he was being attacked by the Jericho Appreciation Society.

“In August of last year, I got injured and I was out for some time. When it was getting closer to the end of the year, my contract actually expired from WWE,” he said.

Strong says there were discussions with WWE & AEW but ultimately, he wanted to be with his wife and friends in AEW.

“It just felt like it was inevitable and I was just kind of walking through parts of the process just to do it when I really wanted to be with my buddies and with my wife,” Strong continued.

Prior to signing with WWE, Strong spent 13 years with ROH, becoming just the second wrestler to win the promotion’s triple crown.

“AEW, it reminds me so much of what I loved about Ring of Honor. The collective, everybody wants it to be better. You hear whatever but since I’ve been there, I really get that feeling of ‘How can we make this better?’ And it’s coming from everybody, for the most part, and it’s very motivating.”

Strong hasn’t wrestled since losing an Owen Hart tournament match to Samoa Joe on the 6/29 Collision. Joe attacked Strong after the match causing him to be stretchered to the back. He has factored into the ongoing storyline with MJF and Cole of late, warning his former Undisputed Era teammate that MJF can’t be trusted.

Our live coverage begins at 8 PM Eastern.

**********

Taped in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

I hear Saturday nights are alright for fighting.

Backstage promos from Powerhouse Hobbs, Roderick Strong, and Samoa Joe were the cold open for the show.

Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness were ringside for commentary.

AEW World Champion MJF defeated Kip Morris in a non-title match (0:28)

MJF jumped Ontario native Kip Morris before the bell, hit the Heat Seeker, and then tapped him out with a crossface. MJF was dressed in red, white, and blue to agitate the Canadian crowd.

After the match, MJF got the mic and started running down everyone from Canada, and offered to defend the title against anyone from Hamilton. A rather large journeyman performer slowly made his way to the ring, but was outpaced by Hamilton native Ethan Page. Page slapped the mic out of MJF’s hand and ran down his family’s history in Hamilton. Page cut a great babyface promo and accepted the challenge from Friedman, a “bare minimum b*tch.”

MJF defeated Ethan Page to retain the AEW World Championship (10:58)

Page went for the crucifix powerbomb early, but MJF escaped and clipped Page’s knee. Friedman worked over Page’s knee and ankle. Page fought his way out of a leg lace and shocked Page with a jawbreaker. MJF caught Page coming out of the corner with an Alabama Slam, then slapped on a half-crab to continue to work over Page’s bad wheel. Page tried several different means of escape, but MJF was able to counter them and keep the hold on until Page finally made the bottom rope. On breaking the hold, MJF sold his own exhaustion for the effort it took to keep Page in the hold which was a great little touch.

Back from a split screen break, Page caught MJF with a cutter. MJF tried to kick Page’s knee to cut off his comeback, but Page fought through the pain and hit a series of clotheslines and a rana to maintain control. Page hit an Iconoclasm into a vertical powerslam to get a near fall. Page went for the Ego’s Edge, but MJF escaped and walked right into a Twist of Fate.

Page went to the top, but Page was unsteady, and MJF crotched him. MJF set up a superplex, but Page fought out and powerslammed MJF from the middle rope for another near fall. Page went for the Ego’s Edge a third time, but Page’s legs gave out under the weight of MJF. MJF caught Page with a dragon screw leg whip in the ropes, then dropped Page with the Heat Seeker to get the pinfall. Tremendous psychology throughout this one, and I hope this was a permanent face-turn for Ethan Page.

Powerhouse Hobbs (w/ QT Marshall and Harley Cameron) defeated Dustin Rhodes in a Quarter Final match to advance in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament (10:06 aired)

Sadly, Marshall and Cameron were still hanging around with Hobbs for this match.

Rhodes escaped a press-slam attempt from Hobbs, but Marshall tripped up Rhodes. This distraction allowed Hobbs to send Rhodes to the floor with a body block. On the floor, Marshall ran Rhodes headfirst into the ringpost while Hobbs distracted referee Aubrey Edwards. As a result, Rhodes was busted open, and Hobbs worked on the cut into a split-screen break.

Back from the break, Hobbs got a near fall. Rhodes started to fight back with right hands and a pair of lariats. Hobbs blocked a spinning powerslam from Rhodes, but Rhodes blocked whatever Hobbs was going for and turned it into a Cross Rhodes! Rhodes followed up with a piledriver for a near fall.

Rhodes hit a sloppy Code Red for another near fall (he couldn’t get his legs under Hobbs shoulders). Marshall tried to interfere and got waylaid with an uppercut, but it was still enough of a distraction for Hobbs to hit an avalanche and a spinebuster… for a one count. Rhodes hit the spinning powerslam for a near fall. Rhodes went for a figure-four, but Hobbs kicked out of it and sent Rhodes into a right hand from Marshall. Hobbs then hit the spinebuster and got the pinfall to advance to the semi-final. His opponent for the next round will be determined later in the show. This was a very good match.

Miro defeated Anthony Henry (3:09)

Miro has taken another step up the jobber ladder with the Workhorsmen’s Anthony Henry, who isn’t quite a no-name, although he’s more of a tag team competitor with JD Drake.

Henry actually caught Miro charging with a boot and came off the top with a stomp. Henry hit an enziguri and a series of forearms.  Miro body blocked Henry against the ropes, then slammed him to the mat with an enziguri. A big machka kick and the Game Over got the submission victory for Miro.

– Tony Schiavone interviewed The Bullet Club Gold members, which now include the Gunn Club. For a crowd that didn’t seem to react to much on Wednesday, Jay White and the Bullet Club got a good amount of heat. The Gunns joined up with the Bullet Club because White and Robinson have experience all over the world. The Gunns started running down all the people they’ve beaten recently, including CM Punk, which actually got a bit of a “CM Punk!” chant from the crowd. Schiavone then announced that all the other members of the Bullet Club would be barred from the ring during Robinson’s tournament match later. White took the mic and barred Schinvone from talking for the rest of the interview, and called out Punk for bringing his red bag out a few weeks ago. He didn’t seem too interested in Punk’s bag, but White did challenge FTR for the AEW Tag Team Titles (with Juice Robinson as his partner).

This led to a promo from Punk’s crew in the back. Punk called MJF’s belt a replica from ShopAEW.com, and FTR accepted Jay White’s challenge. This whole segment ran a little long, but Jay White was great. A feud with Punk should establish Jay White as a top-tier player.

Ricky Starks defeated Juice Robinson in a Quarter Final match to advance in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament (15:19)

Dueling chants for Starks and Robinson to start, while they exchanged arm-ringers, headlocks, and hip-tosses. Robinson tripped up Starks on a drop-down, and Starks flopped awkwardly face-first on the middle rope. Robinson worked over Starks’s leg and slammedStarks into the ropes legs-first.

After a split-screen break, Robinson hit a cannonball in the corner for a near fall. Robinson has been so dominant through the break that McGuinness started channeling Bobby Heenan on commentary and insisted Robinson just be given the victory. And almost on cue, Starks mounted a comeback. Starks hit a DDT, but couldn’t quite land a kip up. Starks with the Snake Eyes and a tornado DDT for another near fall. Robinson countered a hanging DDT with a hot shot, then hit a leg lariat for a near fall.

Robinson locked on the Texas Cloverleaf. Starks got out of the hold with a rope break. Robinson almost got the pin with a rollup and a handful of tights. Starks hit a high-angle back suplex for a near fall. After not reacting for much of the match, the crowd started a weak chant for Starks.

Robinson went for a hurricanrana off the top, but Starks blocked it by holding onto the ropes. Starks missed a dive off the top and Robinson hit a spear for a near fall. Robinson went for his inverted DDT finish, but Starks countered and hit a spear. Starks tried for the roshambeaux, and while Robinson escaped, Starks rolled him up with a jackknife cover for the pin. This match felt about five minutes too long.

After the match, the rest of the Bulle Club surrounded the ring to attack Starks, but CM Punk and FTR ran in (to jeers for Punk, as noted by McGuinness) to chase them off.

– Lexi Nair’s interview with Christian Cage is interrupted by Shawn Spears, who wants a shot at the TNT Champion, Luchasaurus.

Kris Statlander defeated Lady Frost to retain the AEW TBS Championship (6:40 aired)

Lady Frost’s grandfather was a tag team partner of Bruno Sammartino. Frost did a lot of pointless flipping around throughout the match. She flipped into a forearm from Statlander and got suplexed out of a casadora attempt.

After a break, Frost ducked a kick from Statlander and got a German suplex. She countered a tombstone attempt with a spinning DDT for a near fall. Frost tried some more flippy stuff, which almost immediately backfired and Statlander floored her with a clothesline. Statlander finished off Frost with the Saturday Night Fever and got the pinfall. This wasn’t a great match.

– Lexi Nair interviewed Andrade El Idolo. Last week, The House of Black stole Andrade’s mask and he wants it back. The House of Black appeared on the monitor backstage and Malakai Black promised to give the mast back all in good time. El Idolo didn’t react like he was planning on being very patient.

For Collision next week: FTR will face Juice Robinson & Jay White in a title eliminator. Athena and  Willow Nightingale square off in the Owen Hart Women’s Tournament semi-final  match. Both of the men’s semi-final matches will also take place next week, Ricky Starks versus Powerhouse Hobbs and CM Punk versus the winner of the next match.

Samoa Joe defeated Roderick Strong via ref stoppage in a Quarter Final match to advance in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament (13:27)

CM Punk came out to a fairly mixed reaction to join the commentary team. This reaction became more favorable as the match went on.

Roddy gave Joe four of five shots, but it only took one forearm from Joe to put Strong down. Strong leveraged Joe out to the floor and hit him with a dropkick. On the floor, it was more of the same where Joe took three or four shots from Strong, then leveled him with one hard forearm.

Back in the ring, Strong got Joe down and worked a chinlock. Joe escaped the chilock and dropped Strong with a back elbow. Strong charged at Joe in the corner, but got caught with a uranage for a near fall.

Joe dominated for most of the split-screen break, but Strong hit a high knee for a near fall coming out of the commercial. Strong went for a side backbreaker, but Joe forearmed his way out of that. Joe hit a reverse atomic drop, running boot and a senton for a near fall. On commentary, Punk called the fans of Collision “Colliders,” and apparently the Colliders want to see Punk fight Samoa Joe.

Joe wore down Strong with a neck vice, but missed a second senton. Strong started to make a comeback while the crowd chanted for CM Punk. Strong hit three flying clotheslines that didn’t take Joe off his feet. Finally, a dropkick knocked Joe down. Strong caught Joe running and gave him a side backbreaker, then hit a running boot for a near fall.

Strong came off the middle ropes with a dropkick for a near fall, then followed up with an Olympic Slam for a near fall. Strong caught Joe with a jumping knee. Strong went for a suplex, but Joe countered into the Coquina Clutch and choked Strong out. Joe won via ref stoppage.

This sets up CM Punk v. Samoa Joe in the other semi-final for the Owen Hart tournament. On commentary, McGuinness pointed out that Punk has never beat Joe in a one-on-one match.

After the match, Punk and Joe exchanged dirty looks. Joe grabbed a chair , and a gaggle of referees and security were out to keep Punk and Joe separated. Joe slid back in the ring and dropped Strong on the chair. Adam Cole ran out to check on Strong, and the medical team put a cervical collar on Strong and loaded him onto a backboard. The medical staff helped Strong onto a stretcher and took him to the back as the show ended.

Final Thoughts:

Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness were fantastic on commentary. The crowd seemed more enthusiastic for parts of this show than Dynamite on Wednesday, even though it was essentially the same crowd. Punk/Joe and Starks/Hobbs should both be very good matches next week. It seems at least on this show some of the heat on Punk died down a little bit.

Overall, this was a pretty fun show.

AEW Dynamite live results: Chris Jericho vs. Roderick Strong

Chris Jericho vs. Roderick Strong in a Falls Count Anywhere match headlines this week’s AEW Dynamite as the build to the Double or Nothing pay-per-view continues.

Jericho’s Jericho Appreciation Society and Strong’s ally Adam Cole are banned from the building during Strong vs. Jericho.

Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. and Hikaru Shida will team against Ruby Soho and Toni Storm of The Outcasts. This was originally a six-woman tag also involving Saraya and Jamie Hayter, but it was announced earlier today that Hayter is not cleared to compete.

Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin will tag against Big Bill and Lee Moriarty.

“Jungle Boy” Jack Perry faces Rush in singles competition.

AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Tony Schiavone and Taz, as the TNT Champion makes his entrance to loud Wardlow chants from the crowd.

Wardlow Confronts Christian Cage

Wardlow immediately called out Cage after his comments last week, daring Cage to spit in his face. Right on cue, Cage came to the ring with Luchasaurus as backup. After a face off, Cage said Wardlow’s time as TNT Champion is just about over and was about to spit in his face when the brawl began. The numbers were too much, as Cage hit a low blow while Luchasaurus pulled a ladder out from under the ring and chokeslammed Wardlow through it. Cage followed with a Killswitch onto the bent up ladder, making that look even more brutal, as Cage stood tall with the TNT Title over the body of Wardlow.

-Excalibur briefly recaps the actions of Don Callis last week against Kenny Omega and plugs how tonight we will hear from Callis.

AEW International Champion Orange Cassidy & Darby Allin defeated Lee Moriarty & Big Bill

(This turned into quite the fun opener, as Allin & Cassidy showed fun chemistry together, especially after teaming together on the house show loop. I enjoyed the finish and callback from Allin and the side headlock, since that has played part of his story with MJF.)

After each title defense Cassidy has made, it seems like more of his body is being taped up, as this week not only the taped right hand, but kinesio tape on the back as well. A fast back and forth of pin attempts from Cassidy & Moriarty led to both men tagging and Bill tossing Allin around like a rag doll. Bill wanted a test of strength, so Allin slapped him in the face as he & Cassidy connected on double dives on the floor. Cassidy tried a float over in the corner, but as he landed on the apron, Bill connected with a big boot to take control into commercial break.

Cassidy seemingly kneed his way out of a suplex and tagged Allin, but Moriarty had taken the ref and the tag was called off. Both Moriarty & Bill missed corner charges, as Allin made the hot tag and ran wild by throwing his body at both opponents. Allin tried a Code Red on Moriarty, which Bill nearly countered into a chokeslam, but Allin fought free to the ropes. Fending off Moriarty, Allin leapt right into the Boss Man Slam by Bill. Allin took out the legs of Bill, which allowed Cassidy to his a Satellite DDT. Moriarty jumped in and applied the Border City Stretch, but Cassidy escaped. Moriarty was set up in the corner, as Allin & Cassidy hit a double superplex, but as they got to their feet, were clocked by a Bill clothesline. An amazing Stundog Millionaire into a Code Red on Bill, as Moriarty was planted with Beach Break and a Coffin Drop. To send a message to MJF, Allin applied a side headlock on Moriarty and got the pin that way to play off their history.

-Alex Marvez tried to interview The Young Bucks back in the parking lot, giving a quick update on Kenny Omega, saying he’s hurt but he’ll be ok, when the Blackpool Combat Club surrounded them. Nick was slammed on the hood of a truck, while Matt’s bad arm was targeted. Jon Moxley said the BCC are the only Elite group around here, as they walked off with The Bucks left lying.

-Renee Paquette is trying to get a medical update on Wardlow from doctors when Arn Anderson walked up, furious, slapping an ice pack away from Wardlow, asking what he’s prepared to do? Wardlow said he’s willing to beat Christian Cage at his own game and challenges Cage to a TNT Title Ladder Match at Double or Nothing.

**********

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Orange Cassidy, asking him about Kyle Fletcher attacking him last week. Cassidy said whoever wants a shot at the International Title at Double or Nothing, go find Tony Khan, he’ll fight everyone.

Sammy Guevara defeated Exodus Prime

(Justin Roberts really emphasized Guevara being from Texas, as these past few weeks it’s been coming across like Guevara is a babyface, which is strange after all this time him being hated.)

Guevara hit a jumping knee and the GTH for the quick win. Guevara took the mic and talked about the old days in Texas saying everything he went through made him what he is today. Guevara talked about a few wrong turns taking him to the right place, which is Double or Nothing. Guevara listens to his heart, which tells him he’s going to be the new AEW World Champion.

-A history of the Four Pillars in AEW is shown as Excalibur goes over how MJF, Darby Allin, Jack Perry & Sammy Guevara are the present and future of AEW. This was a good, albeit quick video package showcasing the main event of Double or Nothing.

FTR Attempt To Get Their Revenge

Tony Schiavone is in the ring and introduces Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh & Sonjay Dutt to the ring. As they were making their entrance, Dutt showed off two guitars with FTR’s names on them. Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler ran out from the back and sent Singh off the stage through a table and attacked Jarrett, Dutt & Lethal. Wheeler got in chair shots on Jarrett, while Harwood stripped Lethal out of his suit. As FTR were about to hit a Shatter Machine on Jarrett, Karen Jarrett jumped in from behind, hit a low blow on Wheeler, as Jeff hit a Stroke on Harwood. Singh recovered, came to the ring and planted FTR with a double chokeslam. Lethal & Jeff hit simultaneous guitar shots on FTR who crumbled, while Dutt played a broken guitar, as Lethal & Jarrett held the Tag Team titles in the air.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Darby Allin and references the headlock finish of his match earlier. Allin said it was a message to MJF when Sammy Guevara walked in and said he respects Allin. Guevara said he knows Allin doesn’t trust him, but says he won’t lay down for MJF, as all that matters at Double or Nothing is that MJF doesn’t walk away as AEW Champion. Allin said may the best man win and fist bumped Guevara.

Toni Storm & Ruby Soho (w/Saraya) defeated Dr. Britt Baker & Hikaru Shida

(The crowd was really behind Shida & Baker tonight, as this was Shida’s first match back since December on Elevation. I’m assuming they are saving the six woman tag originally scheduled for tonight for Double or Nothing, as this was yet again a case of the numbers game playing into The Outcasts favor with Jamie Hayter not there.)

Storm & Soho tried a fast start on Shida, who immediately turned the tables and suplexed both ladies onto each other in the corner. Storm was sent outside, as Shida connected with a missile dropkick on Soho. An enzugiri on Storm led to a tag to Baker, who clocked Storm with a ripcord elbow. Saraya tripped up Baker, which allowed Storm to hit a charging hip attack to the floor, as Saraya got in some more cheap shots.

Baker was isolated the entire picture in picture until she hit a charging neckbreaker into the double down. Shida & Soho made tags and slugged it out, which Shida won with right hands to everyone, even Saraya. Shida followed with a cross body to the floor on all The Outcasts. A question mark kick sent Storm to the floor, as Soho was planted with a Falcon Arrow. Shida hit a Meteora off the top on Soho, but Storm broke it up. Baker stacked Storm & Soho and hit a neckbreaker and DDT combo for a nice near fall. Soho was able to avoid Lockjaw into No Future, but as Storm made the tag, Baker connected with an Air Raid Crash. Saraya ran distraction yet again, this time allowing Storm to spray Baker in the eyes and hit Storm Zero to steal the win. Excalibur talked about Storm gaining her fourth win in five days in AEW.

-Renee Paquette is backstage yet again with Orange Cassidy, who informs Cassidy since they last talked earlier, 20 men went to Tony Khan’s office and answered the challenge. Cassidy said that’s a lot, so he makes it a 21 man Blackjack Battle Royal for the International Title at Double or Nothing. Cassidy offered Paquette a spot in the match, which she politely turned down.

**********

-Tony Khan is backstage and talked about today being one of the greatest days in the history of AEW. It was announced at the TNT Upfronts that the 2 hour AEW Collision will premiere Saturday June 17th. Collision will be a hot ticket with the premiere location being announced next week. However, June 24th will be in Toronto, June 29th in Hamilton, July 8th in Regina, July 15th in Calgary and finally July 22nd in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center.

Roderick Strong defeated Chris Jericho in a Falls Count Anywhere Match

(Well this definitely lived up to the Falls Count Anywhere stipulation, as Jericho & Strong fought all over the building and had some fun moments. It was really played off like Cole & Strong pulled one over on Jericho, outsmarting him and luring him outside the building. Credit to Excalibur, who had to deliver the unfortunate news of Superstar Billy Graham’s passing during this, I probably would’ve waited until after the match, but safe to say that wasn’t Excalibur’s call.)

Strong attacked with chops and charging forearms before Jericho could even get his jacket off, nearly mowing down referee Aubrey in the process. Jericho started up a chop battle, which wasn’t smart, as Strong hit a takedown slam. More chops by both men, as Strong was sent to the apron, as Strong avoided a springing Jericho into a slam on the apron. Back in the ring, Strong nearly got End of Heartache, but Jericho countered into the Walls of Jericho. Strong got a rope break, as both men fought into the crowd during commercial. Strong was able to slam Jericho ribs first on the railing, even getting a two count on the steps in the crowd.

Excalibur delivers the very unfortunate news of Superstar Billy Graham passing away during this match, which is a tough task to do, as Taz & Schiavone share condolences.

Strong & Jericho continue their brawl into the crowd, as Jericho slammed Strong through a table and both men fought into a stairwell fighting onto a ledge with Jericho charging and tackling Strong for two. Both spilled back into the sea of the crowd as Jericho had a chair, but Strong threw plastic cutlery and ice cream at Jericho’s face. Schiavone’s reaction to Mr. Softee was absolutely hysterical. Jericho dug into the trashcan to clean his face, which is very questionable if you ask me.

Strong is bleeding from the shoulder, as they went out of the arena where Adam Cole appeared behind Jericho right as they stepped foot out of the building. Cole lowered The Boom on Jericho while in a dirt pile, as Strong followed with a jumping knee for the victory. Excalibur talked about how this is just a measure of revenge for Cole, as this is far from over between Jericho & himself.

Jungle Boy Jack Perry defeated Rush (w/Jose the Assistant)

(This match was super hard hitting, as Rush beat the crap out of Perry for a majority of this one. There were some questionable moments however, with the random cup check and the referee just watching Jose get involved constantly. Regardless, the post match was a fun visual with three of the four pillars having a face off ahead of Double or Nothing.)

Rush wasted no time attacking Perry at the bell on the outside. Jose pulled a cable chord from under the ring, as Rush continuously slammed Perry head first against the barricade. This attack led to Perry being busted open, as Perry never even got out of the gate before they went to picture in picture. Perry tried to fight back with his comeback lariat, but Rush had it scouted. Perry fired off a chop, as Rush literally just grabbed the crotch of Perry, which Excalibur said was a cup check. I have zero clue what the heck that was, as the ref just stood there. Perry & Rush fought up on the second rope and continued their chop battle until Perry threw headbutts and a hurricanrana.

Jose grabbed the leg of Perry, again in front of the referee, as Perry ducked a charging Rush and sank in the Snare Trap. Rush managed to make it to the ropes, as both men went to the apron, where Rush wiped Perry’s face from the blood and licked it, which was just gross. Perry charged, but Rush hit an overhead belly to belly to the floor with Perry came within inches of landing on his head. Perry tried fighting back in the ring, but was starched with another forearm. Rush shoved the ref away in the corner and Perry got a school boy flash pin with a handful of trunks.

Post match Preston Vance, Jose & Rush all attacked Perry until Darby Allin hit the ring, but he found himself choked out by the cable chord Jose brought out earlier. Sammy Guevara made the save, taking out Rush on the ramp, as Allin took out Jose with a Scorpion Death Drop. Vance was wiped out by Guevara and Allin, as all three challengers for the AEW Title are left in the ring staring each other down.

-Renee Paquette approaches MJF backstage after seeing what just happened, asking him how he’s feeling ahead of the AEW Title match at Double or Nothing. MJF slapped the microphone out of her hands and walked away.

**********

-We saw footage of Jamie Hayter being injured last month by Toni Storm, who was standing by with Renee Paquette backstage. Storm said she’s setting records in AEW with four wins in five days and says she’s an entirely different animal in AEW, challenging Jamie Hayter for a Women’s Title match at Double or Nothing.

Switchblade Jay White (w/Juice Robinson) defeated Ricky Starks via disqualification

(I was surprised this match was taking place on Dynamite instead of the PPV, but the finish certainly allows them to have a rematch on that show. This was a very good match while it lasted, as the crowd was into it from the start.)

White suckered Starks into a chase early on, driving him into the edge of the ring, but Starks fought back by sending White into the barricade. Back inside, White caught Starks with a Hot Shot and some violent chops to follow. To the floor again, Starks was able to battle back until White drove Starks face first onto the apron. There’s dueling chants from the crowd as White controlled during the break with Starks turning the tide when they returned.

Starks fired out of the corner with a lariat, Manhattan Drop, charging knee and back elbow. White charged right into a belly to belly suplex and Tornado DDT for two. It took Starks too long to follow up, as White leapt with a shoulder to the midsection and snap DDT. White draped Starks over the top rope and followed with a huge uranage for a nearfall of his own. White signaled for Blade Runner, but Starks elbowed free until White suplexed Starks over the top to the floor.

Back inside, Starks almost got a flash roll up for two, as he followed with a snap neck breaker. Starks hit a misdirect slam that nearly got three, as White floated over Roshambo. Another misdirect, as Robinson tripped up Starks long enough for White to try Blade Runner, but Starks got a roll up for two. White gouged the eyes of Starks, as the ref reprimanded him in the corner. Robinson jumped in with a chair, but Starks got control, sent Robinson to the floor, popped White in the midsection and the back, getting himself disqualified.

Don Callis Addresses His Actions

Tony Schiavone is in the ring and introduces Don Callis, who makes his way to the ring with security lined up down the stage. The footage of Callis turning on Kenny Omega last week is shown on the video screen, as the crowd is booing Callis out of the building. Schiavone asks why, as Callis said instead of why he did what he did to Omega, he wants to talk of what Omega did to him. Callis is the victim in this scenario, as he ran down everything he has done for Omega. Without Don Callis, there is no Kenny Omega, as that line brought out Omega from the back, laying out all the security guards until the Blackpool Combat Club attacked from behind including a Paradigm Shift by Moxley on the stage.

The BCC jumped in the ring and said this was The Elite’s final warning to stay down. Omega struggled to his feet as The Young Bucks limped out with weapons in hand. The numbers evened up as Hangman Adam Page walked out to a massive ovation, as Omega handed him a barbed wire broom. The brawl was on, as The Elite took turns beating up Wheeler Yuta, as The Bucks hit a BTE Trigger and Page with a Buckshot Lariat. Page stood next to The Bucks & Omega and said they are the heart of AEW, they are The Elite. Page said at Double or Nothing, it’ll be The Blackpool Combat Club vs. The Elite in Anarchy in the Arena. This was an incredible ending to Dynamite, as the crowd was on fire from even the moment Callis walked out.

Fight Game: Did Triple H make a big mistake?

John LaRocca and I are back with a brand new Fight Game Podcast.

We kicked off the show with our thumbs up/thumbs down segment which led to a bigger discussion around WWE bringing in a third World title. Is this Triple H’s biggest mistake so far being lead of WWE creative?

We then moved on to our big picture look at AEW Dynamite:

  • Orange Cassidy being the best booked babyface in AEW
  • Wardlow and Arn Anderson
  • The backward booking of the Four Pillars
  • Roderick Strong’s AEW introduction
  • Taya Valkyrie not being booked like a proper babyface when the entire storyline was set for her to be one

Roderick Strong signs with AEW, debuts on Dynamite

Roderick Strong has signed with AEW, making a surprise appearance on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

Adam Cole on Wednesday called out Chris Jericho and told him to come to the ring. Jericho on the video screen rejected Cole’s demand, calling him a coward. He then sent the Jericho Appreciation Society to attack. Orange Cassidy and Bandido attempted to make the save, but the numbers game remained in the JAS’ favor until Strong made the save, fending off JAS. Cole and Strong teased dissension, but then hugged as the segment ended.

Shortly after Strong’s appearance on Dynamite, Tony Khan confirmed that Strong had signed with the company.

Strong later sent out a tweet saying he was back.

Strong, who had been under contract to WWE, has not wrestled since last August, losing to Apollo Crews on an episode of NXT. He had been associated with The Creed Brothers and was involved in a storyline with Damon Kemp. He had been written out of television after he was attacked backstage, with Kemp being revealed as the eventual assailant. Strong was last seen on NXT television last October, selling the effects from Kemp’s attack.

Last year it had been reported that Strong had requested his release from WWE several times prior to being written off television, but those requests had been denied.

WWE NXT live results: Final build to Stand & Deliver

Tuesday’s NXT marks the final show before Saturday’s Stand & Deliver premium live event.

Grayson Waller is set to respond to Johnny Gargano’s challenge for a unsanctioned match at NXT Stand & Deliver. Waller agreed to sign the contract as long as Gargano was banned from the building. Gargano gave the contract to friend and NXT commentator Vic Joseph for safekeeping, agreeing to the stipulations.

A battle royal will determine the fifth and final competitor in the upcoming five-way match for the NXT North American Championship at Stand & Deliver. Men such as Dijak and Jinder Mahal told Lee on last week’s NXT that they will be the ones to fill that final slot.

Tuesday’s NXT will also have a Last Chance Qualifying match, with Indi Hatwell, Sol Ruca, and Ivy Nile vying for the final spot in the Women’s Championship ladder match at Stand & Deliver. All three women previously failed in their efforts to qualify for the match, but now have one final shot.

Join us for live coverage starting at 8 pm ET.

**********

Opening the show is the battle royal to determine the final competitor for the North American title bout.

Apollo Crews gets an entrance to start the show, and the other wrestlers are already in the ring. North American Champion Wes Lee is ringside at the announce desk for guest commentary.

Scrypts jumps over the ropes into the ring as Crews is posing in a corner. Scrypts’ leaps onto Axiom, and that is the spark that ignites the powder keg. A melee erupts and the battle royal is underway.

Axiom wins a 20-man battle royal to qualify for the NXT North American Championship match at Stand & Deliver

Quincy Elliott was the first eliminated, mere seconds after the match begins. Nathan Frazier is the last eliminated. Lots of clubbering in between.

The battle royal goes through a commercial break. Axiom outlasts the field, which has been a story they have been telling for weeks. He finally qualifies for the five-way title match at Stand & Deliver.

Some other stories are weaved into general chaos of the battle royal. A grudge is established between Dijak and Odyssey Jones. An enraged Dijak attacks Jones after Jones helps to eliminate Dijak. Jones is pulled out of the ring, and Dijak sends him crashing into the ring steps. Jones is rolled back into the ring, and moments later Jones is eliminated by Jinder Mahal.

Mahal ends up on the apron, where he fights off Malik Blade and Edris Enofe. Mahal is named by the announcers as an odds on favorite to win. He is the superstar and whatnot, plus a former WWE champion.

Scrypts jumps Axiom at the start, but Axiom gets the last laugh as he eliminate Scrypts. This adds another layer to their simmering feud.

Hank Walker and Drew Gulak come to blows, and they get into a brawl after both are tossed out by Charlie Dempsey. Walker had Gulak in a sleeper on the apron, and Dempsey dumps out Walker. That in turn also eliminated Gulak, who takes his anger out on Walker. They brawl their way off the soundstage, and they would meet again in a singles match later tonight.

Crews was the only one to get a full entrance before the match, and he also gets the Diesel treatment. He throws guys out left and right, but he is ultimately eliminated by Dabbo-Kato. They were among the final six.

Last six remaining are Dabbo-Kato, Mahal, Dempsey, Axiom, Crews, and Nathan Frazier. Kato throws out Crews, leaving five in the ring. Team work helps to eliminate Mahal, as Frazier gets an assist from Axiom to eliminate Mahal. The team works is not over.

Having a final four lasts only seconds, as the the last three all team up to toss out Dabbo-Kato. He gets a touch of the Andre the Giant treatment for his elimination, and he glares a hole through Wes Lee after the match.

Things gets really good in the closing moments. Dempsey eats a missile dropkick from Frazier, and Dempsey is clotheslined over the ropes by Axiom. They trade strikes, leading to a double down. Dempsey had already went over the ropes, so Axiom just boots him off the apron. Dempsey hits the floor, and he is out.

Last two remaining are Axiom and Frazier, and they tear it up. Breakneck speed and intricate high spots. These two are tremendous together. Great counters and reversals. Frazier skins the cat to escape touching the floor, but Axiom nails him with a dropkick in the closing moments. Axiom then throws out Frazier, and Axiom wins the battle royal.

North American Champion Wes Lee gets into the ring after the match to join Axiom. Out comes Dragon Lee, Ilja Dragunov and JD McDonagh. All five have a standoff and they stare down each other ahead of their five-way title match this weekend.

Pretty Deadly, wearing fancy hats, host a Stand & Deliver preview show, with clips sprinkled into this episode where they run down the card for Saturday.

Andre Chase and Tyler Bate cut a promo ahead of Bate’s match tonight. Thea Hail is also there, and she is pumped up as usual. Hail is full of school spirit. Duke Hudson though, not so much. He tags along anyway. but is is far from excited about it.

Tyler Bate (with Chase U) defeated Von Wagner (with Mr. Stone)

Bate pinned Wagner after interference by Mr. Stone backfired. Thea Hail also gets involved, after she counteracts the interference.

Wagner is a monster heel, and he works over Bate. Comeback by Bate, and he tries to fall the big timber. Wagner won’t go down. Yet, Bate is on a roll, until Mr. Stone interferes by hooking Bate’s leg. Bate goes after Stone, and Stone seeks sanctuary in the ring. Thea Hail jumps in and she is a house of fire on Stone. Hail boots Stone out of the ring just before the finish.

Bate is thrown over the ropes by Wagner, but Bate turns it into a dive on Stone. Duke Hudson gives a reluctant high five to Bate. Back in the ring, Bate climbs the turnbuckles for his finisher where he does a corkscrew into a swanton.

Bate and Chase U pose in the ring after the match. The lights go out for a sudden promo from The Schism. They have a match on Saturday against Chase U, with control of the university gimmick on the line as a stipulation.

NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez is backstage, much to the surprise of the announcer team. At least they sold it that way, as Perez has been out with an injury. Perez heads to the office of Shawn Michaels, where Perez lobbies to be included in the women’s title ladder match at Stand & Deliver. There is some bad acting here in this skit, but their hearts are in the right place.

Perez wants to climb the ladder and retrieve the title she never lost in the ring. Perez pleads with Michaels, and Perez talks about wanting to overcome her anxiety. Michaels relents, and he agrees to add Perez to the ladder match at Stand & Deliver, but Perez must get checked out again by the doctors.

Elektra Lopez defeated Valentina Feroz

Lopez pinned Feroz after a sit-out tree slam. This match was set up weeks ago, and Lopez wins in dominate fashion. Feroz got some offense, but this match seems more designed to get Lopez over.

Eddy Thorpe defeated Myles Borne

Thorpe (Karl Fredericks) pinned Borne, in what is Thorpe’s debut match in NXT. Thorpe finished off Borne with a Saito suplex, followed by twisting neckbreaker. Thorpe looked good here, but he will need some character development. I’m assuming the new name is a play on Jim Thorpe, a Native American athlete who was a cultural icon.

NXT Tag Team Champion Gallus cut promos in an interview with McKenzie Mitchell. Gallus vow to retain their tag titles at Stand & Deliver.

Indi Hartwell defeated Ivy Nile and Sol Ruca in a “Last Chance Qualifying” match

Hartwell pinned Nile to win the match. In winning, Hartwell qualifies for the women’s title ladder match at Stand & Deliver.

Sol Ruca got to shine, and she sure shined with her athleticism. As they are heading home, Nile catches Hartwell in a Dragon Sleeper. Ruca leaps in and springboard into her “Sol-snatcher” finisher (springboard flip into a stunner). Hartwell boots Ruca with a kick, knocking Ruca out of the ring. Hartwell then hits Nile with a sliding forearm, and Hartwell covers Nile for a three count.

Much like earlier in the show in the build to the men’s multi-person title match, all the competitors in the NXT Women’s Championship ladder match have a staredown inside the soundstage.

Pretty Deadly, and their hats, are back with more of their Stand & Deliver preview. They focus on the women’s ladder match.

Hyping the NXT Championship match at Stand & Deliver is a “Prime Target” segment. A video package previews the title match main event for Saturday. This was really good stuff, and it might be one of the better Prime Target segments.

Drew Gulak defeated Hank Walker

Gulak pinned Walker, after outside interference by Charlie Dempsey.

Walker trades submission holds with Gulak early on in the match. Walker was holding his own when Gulak cuts him off. Walker being so good on the mat forces Gulak to venture outside his normal method of attack. Gulak even jumps off the top rope. Walker fires up and he makes a comeback.

Walker pulls down the straps on his singlet. He hits the ropes for an Ultimate Warrior shoulder tackle, but Gulak kicks out for a near fall. Gulak counters to apply a crossface. Walker escapes, and moments later he has Gulak trapped in a cross armbreaker. Gulak manages to get his foot on the bottom rope, thus breaking the hold.

Walker and Gulak are tied up near the ropes when Charlie Dempsey runs down to ringside. Dempsey hops on the apron, and he Dempsey bashes Walker in the back of the head. Gulak then traps Walker in a small package for a pinfall.

Pretty Deadly preview the men’s and women’s tag team title matches at Stand & Deliver.

Tony D’Angelo & Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo defeated Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen

D’Angelo pins Jensen to win the match. There is drama, and an angle after the match, with the Kiana James and Fallon Henely. Their sage with Briggs & Jensen continues.

A skit earlier in the show established a stipulation that if Briggs & Jensen win this match then they are added to the tag title match at Stand & Deliver. Kaina James in storyline is the one that got them the opportunity, much to the chagrin of Fallon Henley. Doesn’t really matter anyway, as Briggs & Jensen lose the match tonight.

The tag match tonight goes through a commercial break. Briggs & Jensen are standing tall as the show cuts to the break. Stacks & Tony D. turn the tables by the time the show returns from commercial, and they work over Jensen.

In an unintentionally funny moment, Stacks & Tony D. do the old Demolition finisher, except Stacks jumps off the top rope for the flying elbow. Booker T on commentary repeatedly hollers, calling it the “Doomsday Device.” I laughed out loud.

Hot tag and Briggs proceeds to clean house. Briggs tags out, and he lifts up Stacks into an electric chair. Jensen then leaps off the top rope with a spinning heel kick. D’Angelo jumps in to break the count for a near fall.

Briggs and D’Angelo have a slugfest, and Briggs is sent outside with a Kevin Nash spot where he misses a big boot. Stacks & Tony D. then execute a stereo slam where they both give Jensen a big back bump, and D’Angelo craddles Jensen for the deciding pinfall.

After the match, Fallon Henley gets into the ring alongside Kiana James. They are still the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions, but Henley wants to settle an issue. Henley tells Jensen there is something James needs to tell you. Henley is alluding to James being unfaithful. James says instead of telling Jensen, she will show him. James walks over to Jensen and kisses him. The announcers sell it like this is the first time Jensen has ever kissed a girl. Henley is the only one not happy.

Johnny Gargano brawls with Grayson Waller

Grayson Waller enters the soundstage, and he heads to the announce desk where Vic Joseph is waiting with a contract. Johnny Gargano gave the contract to Joseph for safe keeping, as Gargano is banned from the building per Waller’s request. The contract is for a match at Stand & Deliver. Waller is supposed to sign it, but first he must talk about it a lot.

Waller takes the contract from Joseph, and Waller cuts a promo on Joseph. Waller then grabs a microphone as he gets into the ring. Security guards are flanking Waller as he addresses the audience. Waller cuts a promo that includes him heeling on the crowd. He goes on to blame the fans.

Waller brings up War Games, where he jumped off the top of the cage. He wanted that spot to go viral, but everyone was talking about “Johnny Wrestling” instead. Waller says that is his justification for attacking Gargano two nights later on NXT. That angle wrote off Gargano from WWE television at the time. Gargano would eventually return to WWE, but on the main roster instead of NXT.

Waller calls Gargano “the biggest mark in this business.” I guess we are supposed to believe he is shooting now. Anyway, Waller basically claims he got himself more over by attacking Gargano.

Waller continues cutting his promo, until he is interrupted by Gargano’s theme music. The song was somewhat of a red herring. Waller was looking for Gargano to come down the entrance ramp, but Gargano has a surprise.

Dressed as a cameraman, Gargano is already in the ring. He sits the camera down and takes off his disguise. Stone Cold Gargano then attacks Waller, and they are separated by security in a pull-apart brawl. The go-home show goes off the air with them being held back.

WWE notes: Roderick Strong injury, Ricky Steamboat documentary

Dave Meltzer shared some WWE notes on both Roderick Strong and Rick Steamboat in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Roderick Strong injured

The Diamond Mine has remained a big part of WWE NXT’s weekly TV with a main focus of late being their growing dissent with Roderick Strong.

Meltzer reported that were was supposed to be an angle involving Strong and the Diamond Mine this past Tuesday, but it was delayed due to a Strong injury.

Strong did cause a distraction during Tuesday’s trios match between the Diamond Mine and Gallus when he wanted to show Damon Kemp a video on his phone to help support a point he was making earlier. Kemp stomped on the phone and as security was taking Strong away, Joe Coffey took advantage and hit Kemp with a lariat for the pin and win, further deepening the issues.

The severity or specificity about the injury wasn’t reported.

Ricky Steamboat A&E documentary

Ricky Steamboat has been all over the wrestling map in recent months, acting as guest timekeeper for a recent AEW Dynamite and appearing on-screen during NWA’s 74th anniversary weekend and subsequent TV tapings.

Meltzer notes that Steamboat will now be a focus of a future WWE A&E documentary that is currently being worked on.

Earlier this year, WWE and A&E announced an expanded partnership deal for more documentaries and general content.

Three title matches added to NXT Great American Bash

Three title matches have been added to next week’s Great American Bash edition of NXT.

Cora Jade and Roxanne Perez will challenge Toxic Attraction (Gigi Dolin and Jacey Jayne) for the NXT Women’s Tag Team titles, while Carmelo Hayes will defend the North American title against Grayson Waller. Meanwhile, The Creed Brothers will defend the NXT Tag Team titles against fellow Diamond Mine members Roderick Strong and Damon Kemp.

Additionally, Wendy Choo will take on Tiffany Stratton, while Trick Williams will face Wes Lee.

Jade and Perez won tonight’s number one contendership match, defeating Katana Chance and Kayden Carter. The two teams confronted one another last week, leading to a brawl over who should face Toxic Attraction next.

On this week’s NXT, Grayson Waller asked Hayes if he could sign some memorabilia. Hayes agreed, but later found out that he had unwittingly signed a contract for a title defense.
