Two title matches set for next week’s WWE SmackDown

Two title matches are set for next week’s SmackDown.

Xavier Woods will get a shot at Gunther’s Intercontinental title. After he defeated LA Knight on Friday’s SmackDown, Woods confronted Gunther backstage by playing his trombone in front of Imperium. The two eventually agreed to a title match for next week’s show.

Liv Morgan and Raquel Gonzalez will have their first WWE Women’s Tag Team title defense on next week’s SmackDown when they take on Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green. Morgan and Gonzalez were celebrating their title victory when Green and Deville came out, laying claim to a future title match.

A third match will see The Viking Raiders take on Strowman and Ricochet. Strowman and Ricochet were walking backstage when they were jumped by the Raiders. The Vikings used a steel beam to wipe out Strowman, then took out Ricochet with a double powerbomb through a table.

Here is what has been announced so far for next week’s SmackDown:

  • WWE Women’s Tag Team titles: Liv Morgan & Raquel Gonzalez (c) vs. Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green
  • WWE Intercontinental title: Gunther (c) vs. Xavier Woods
  • The Viking Raiders vs. Braun Strowman and Ricochet

WWE’s Rey Mysterio interested in mask vs. hair match against Dominik

Rey Mysterio says he’s willing to put his mask on the line in a match against his son.

Mysterio was a guest on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive show on Tuesday and teased the idea of a Lucha de Apuestas with Dominik

Rey Mysterio said:

Maybe I put my mask on the line against his hair, which is some Lucha culture, and if I lose, I take my mask off and if he loses, he shaves his hair off. That might be interesting.

Rey was then asked if he thinks Dominik would be willing to agree to such a match.

He talks a lot of crap so why not back it up?

Rey was asked if plans are in place for the match to happen.

No, but I will pitch it out. I’ll challenge him, straight up.

Mysterio has put his mask on the line 10 times previously. Prior to his arrival in WCW, he successfully retained his mask against Mr. Condor, Rocco Valente, Tony Arce, El Bandido, Vulcano, and Misterioso. He put his mask on the line twice in WCW, first in a mask vs. title match against Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 97. He would later lose his mask at SuperBrawl IX after his team with Konnan was defeated by Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

Mysterio would wrestle without his mask for the remainder of his time in WCW. Mysterio later received special permission from the Lucha Libre Council to put his mask back on when WWE toured Mexico for the first time since he signed with the promotion in 2002. He then successfully retained his mask against Kane at No Mercy 2008 and against Chris Jericho at The Bash in 2009.

Bad Bunny put through a table on WWE Raw

The Raw after WrestleMania 39 saw music superstar Bad Bunny get put through a table by Damian Priest.

After getting involved at WrestleMania, Bad Bunny made another appearance on WWE programming as he was ringside for Rey Mysterio’s match against Austin Theory on Monday night. The match ended with Theory winning after interference by Dominik Mysterio.

Dominik attacked Rey after the match and then got in Bad Bunny’s face. He went to sucker punch Bad Bunny, but Bad Bunny blocked it and decked Dominik.

Priest responded by pulling Bad Bunny over the barricade. Priest told him that he shouldn’t have gotten involved. When Bad Bunny punched Dominik again, Priest attacked Bad Bunny, including chokeslamming him through the announce table.

Adam Pearce confronted Priest backstage after the attack. Priest said that, if Bad Bunny wasn’t his friend, he would have really given Pearce a reason to be angry.

Priest was Bad Bunny’s tag team partner when Bad Bunny made his in-ring debut at WrestleMania 37. They defeated The Miz & John Morrison.

Bad Bunny helped Rey defeat Dominik at WrestleMania 39 night one. He took a chain away from Dominik when Dominik tried to use it as a weapon.

The story appears to be leading to Bad Bunny competing in the ring at Backlash next month. Bad Bunny has been announced as the host of the event, which is taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturday, May 6.

WWE WrestleMania 39 Saturday scrum notes: Triple H on choosing the main event, Bad Bunny wrestling

WWE held a press conference following WrestleMania 39 Saturday in Los Angeles.

Rhea Ripley, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn, Rey Mysterio, and Triple H all made comments during the event. Here are some notes:

  • Rhea Ripley said being the first grand slam champion is “so satisfying”. She said that the one thing she strives for is making history.
  • Rey Mysterio said riding to the ring with Snoop Dogg was “legendary”. He walked into his match very emotional, and a lot of what he did on Saturday was to honor Eddie Guerrero.
  • Kevin Owens said that he gives Super Dragon and PWG credit for getting them to this position. Says that it meant a lot to be here.
  • Sami Zayn said that there are many Hall of Fame level performers who didn’t get to be part of a story such as this. He said there was a sense of finality to this storyline, but also said that at any time, they could go back to it. He said that this could be a storyline that people could aspire to have. He compared the storyline to what The Sopranos did for television.
  • Zayn said that as much as he liked doing the match with Knoxville last year, the match in Montreal put him at the level where he is now.
  • Owens ended their interview by mentioning two other names that got them here: Jay and Mark Briscoe. Owens said he hoped they did them proud.
  • Triple H said they were able to break their all-time WrestleMania sponsorship record with 21 million in activations. He alsoclaimed that they broke SoFi’s attendance record, citing the 80,497 number given during the broadcast.
  • Triple H praised Charlotte as a “generational athlete”. Doesn’t recall seeing a match of hers where it “didn’t feel real.” Also praised Rhea Ripley to her growth in recent years, comparing her to Roman Reigns.
  • When asked about putting the Undisputed Tag Team title match in the main event, Triple H said the choice was made over what whas the most impactful storyline. He said it was about whatever storyline is resonating the most, and in this case he felt it was the The Usos vs. Owens & Zayn.
  • An interviewer asked about Bad Bunny potentially wrestling at Backlash in Puerto Rico. After praising recent celebrity performers like Logan Paul, Triple H says if Bad Bunny wants in that ring, he has his number and they can talk.

Bad Bunny helps Rey Mysterio defeat Dominik at WWE WrestleMania 39

With some help from Bad Bunny, Rey Mysterio was victorious in his father vs. son matchup at WrestleMania 39.

Superstar musician Bad Bunny returned to WWE programming as he joined Spanish commentary for Rey and Dominik Mysterio’s match at WrestleMania Saturday. He ended up getting involved when Dominik tried to cheat to win. Dominik went to hit Rey with a chain while the referee’s attention was turned away, but Bad Bunny took the chain away from him. Rey then gave Dominik a 619 and a frog splash to get the win.

The Rey vs. Dominik match also included interference by Judgment Day’s Damian Priest and Finn Balor. Legado del Fantasma, who were gifted Latino World Order shirts by Rey on Friday’s SmackDown, ran out to help even the odds.

Bad Bunny has been announced as the host of WWE’s Backlash pay-per-view in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Saturday, May 6. Bad Bunny’s involvement in Rey vs. Dominik appears like it could lead to Bad Bunny competing in the ring at Backlash.

Bad Bunny made his in-ring debut when he teamed with Priest to defeat The Miz & John Morrison at WrestleMania 37 in 2021. Bad Bunny also appeared as an entrant in the 2022 men’s Royal Rumble match.

WWE Hall of Fame live coverage: Rey Mysterio, Great Muta, Stacy Keibler

Four inductees will join the WWE Hall of Fame in Los Angeles, California, following SmackDown.

The new class is made up of Rey Mysterio, The Great Muta, Stacy Keibler and comedian Andy Kaufman. Additionally, the late Tim White will be honored with the company’s Warrior Award.

Outside a three-year run when he left the company, Mysterio has been a fixture of WWE since 2002 following the end of WCW and has held nearly every major singles title in WWE.

The Great Muta never competed in WWE, but recently wrapped a near-yearlong retirement tour after a lengthy career. He had memorable runs in WCW and NJPW in addition to being the former president of AJPW.

Keibler is a former WCW Nitro Girl and rose to prominence as Ms. Hancock before coming to WWE post-sale. She was in WWE from 2001-2006 but never held a title.

Kaufman was also never in WWE, but was part of a legendary feud with Jerry Lawler.

**********

Michael Cole and Wade Barrett are on commentary for the Hall of Fame Kickoff.

Byron Saxton and Maria Menounos interviewed Corey Graves & Carmella backstage. Graves spoke about meeting The Great Muta for the first time tonight.

Cathy Kelley interviewed Booker T and Sharmell backstage. Sharmell talked about her fellow Nitro Girl, Stacy Keibler, being inducted tonight.

Back to Saxton and Menounos who are with Kurt Angle and his wife, Giovanna. Angle said he loves Rey Mysterio “like a brother.”

Michael Cole then spoke about having known Rey Mysterio for over 20 years.

Charlotte Flair is with Cathy Kelley. She mentioned that she was wearing matching outfits with her husband on the red carpet.

Saxton and Menounos interview The Miz and Maryse.

Cole discussed Tim White winning this year’s Warrior Award. He mentioned how White had been Andre the Giant’s assistant, ran the Friendly Tap bar, and what he meant to the company.

Sami Zayn and his wife are backstage with Menounos and Saxton. He mentioned him and Kevin Owens wrestling for years in PWG, mentioning Pro Wrestling Guerrilla by name. Zayn also seemed concerned that Dominik might somehow disrupt his father’s induction.

The crowd got excited as Rob Van Dam took his seat on the stage with the other Hall of Famers and legends.

The Street Profits are backstage with Saxton and Kelley where Montez Ford and Saxton wearing matching jackets was the focus of the conversation.

That takes us to the main show.

We open up with a video featuring previously inducted members of the WWE Hall of Fame.

Kayla Braxton and Corey Graves are at the podium inside the ring. Braxton announces Stacy Keibler as the first to be inducted. Footage of Keibler’s career set to ZZ Top’s “She’s Got Legs” is shown.

Keibler’s pre-WWE career from Baltimore Ravens cheerleader to Nitro Girl, to Miss Hancock to WWE is recapped. They also showed footage of her from Dancing With The Stars and more from her post-WWE career.

Graves introduces Mick Foley and Torrie Wilson to induct her. Keibler inducted Wilson into the Hall of Fame in 2019.

Foley suggested that Keibler and Molly Holly have a match to determine who is the nicest person in the history of WWE. He shared some memories from their time in WWE together before introducing Wilson. She spoke about meeting Keibler in WCW and said her friendly carefree attitude won people over all the time. Wilson spoke more about Keibler’s accomplishments in wrestling and in her post-wrestling career.

Keibler made her entrance set once again to ZZ Top’s “She’s Got Legs.”

She thanked the fans and spoke about having always loved performing since she was little. Keibler showed a photo of her when she was young in a WCW live crowd holding up a sign that said, “Thank you Bret.” She said she was a superfan then and she’s a superfan now. Another photo of her wearing an NWO Wolfpac shirt as a kid was shown as well.

Keibler spoke about wrestlers being gritty and how even though wrestling hurts, her pain went away whenever she went through the curtain. Keibler thanked Madusa for pushing her, Trish, Lita, Molly Holly, Jaqueline, Jazz, Victoria, and Gail Kim were mentioned. She also thanked Fit Finlay, The Dudley Boyz, Shane Helms, and Torrie Wilson. She said Foley will always have a special place in her heart. Keibler thanked her family, who were then shown ringside.

She thanked the fans again and then wrapped it up.

Next up is Andy Kaufman.

A video featuring footage of Kaufman’s time in wrestling along with comments from Jerry Lawler, William Shatner, and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias is shown. The video also had a clip of Kaufman’s friend Bob Zmuda saying Kaufman achieved his dream wrestling in Memphis.

Jerry Lawler sent in a video. Lawler said as he’s home recovering, he asked Jimmy Hart to help induct Kaufman into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Jimmy Hart came out to his song, “Eat Your Heart Out Rick Springfield.” Hart told some stories of how much Kaufman loved wrestling. He told different stories about how he and Kaufman once got attacked in their car because they were hated so much. Hart said that Kaufman would refuse to sign autographs to stay in character and told other stories from his time in wrestling.

Hart then introduced the Kaufman family to the ring. Andy’s brother thanked Lawler for making all of this happen. He said Kaufman was a lifelong fan of wrestling and didn’t get into it as a gag. They mentioned people told Kaufman that wrestling was bad for his career but he wouldn’t stop because he loved it. They said being inducted into the Hall of Fame would have meant the world to him. Kaufman’s daughter thanked the fans and the speech finished up.

Dominik and Ripley are shown, which got a reaction from the crowd.

The Great Muta will be inducted next.

Footage of The Great Muta’s career is shown focussing entirely on his time as The Great Muta character. The clips were mainly from WCW but there was also some footage from NOAH as well. They made special mention of Tegan Nox doing Muta’s Shining Wizard and showed a side-by-side of both doing the move. Asuka was shown talking about the mysterious mist. She said Muta is the reason she became a wrestler. Footage of his match against Nakamura is also shown.

Ric Flair is introduced to induct Muta.

Flair told some stories of working with Muta. He also commented on Asuka being “a bada**” at one point. Flair talked about his respect for the culture of wrestling in Japan. He then listed off wrestlers who beat him up in Japan. Flair gave a special mention to Jumbo Tsuruta and said he wants to induct him one day. He then joked about Hunter coming out to wrap him up. Flair then introduced Muta, referring to him as someone who performed in the same class as Ricky Steamboat and Shawn Michaels.

Muta walked to the ring. Flair continued to say that Muta once looked after his son as if he was his own and that he will love him forever. The crowd chants Muta’s name.

Muta thanked everyone and said he would keep it short because he doesn’t speak English well. He said he was honored to be in the WWE Hall of Fame and wrapped up a short but fun speech. He then blew green mist into the air to a big pop. Asuka was then shown cheering in the crowd.

Braxton and Graves then introduced a video about Tim White winning the Warrior Award.

Clips of White’s refereeing career were shown including segments and matches with several Hall of Famers. They also spoke about his role and friendship with Andre the Giant. A clip of White saying he particularly enjoyed working with The Godfather is also shown. They also mentioned his career behind the scenes and that he was universally liked.

JBL and Ron Simmons are brought out as the APA to induct White.

Ron Simmons said “Damn” after waiting a comedically appropriate time. JBL said that Tim was a great friend of theirs and a great friend of everybody. They spoke about spending a lot of time in Tim’s bar. Simmons joked about how whenever White needed to renovate the bar, he’d call WWE about doing a scene there so WWE would then need to pay for the damage caused.

JBL introduced Tim’s brothers to accept the Warrior Award.

Tim’s brother said the whole White family wanted to thank the WWE for his induction into the Hall of Fame. He said that if his brother was here today, he would express his gratitude for all the love, support, and friendships he received during his career. Tim’s other brother then hoisted the Warrior Award trophy up Stanley Cup style and celebrated, which was pretty fun.

Braxton and Graves announced that Rey Mysterio’s induction is up next.

Footage of Rey Mysterio’s WWE career was shown. There were some clips from WCW and ECW but it was primarily focused on his WWE career. Rey and Eddie Guerrero’s time working together was featured as well. I don’t believe there was any footage of Dominik shown.

Konnan is brought out to induct Mysterio. He got a nice response and went right into it with a lot of energy. The crowd started to liven up. Konnan talked about how much things have changed, and how much more diverse wrestling has become. He talked about how Rey was a young surfer when he met him. It was hard to get promoters to use him but he would try with anyone who would listen. He told stories about lying to bouncers about Rey’s age so he could get into venues to perform.

Konnan continued to talk about bringing Mysterio to ECW and WCW and pushing him hard as a generational talent to promoters. He also talked about Rey’s debut match in WCW getting a standing ovation backstage. His importance to Lucha libre and how he broke barriers of what a wrestler is supposed to look like is also mentioned.

Konnan made a joke about being adopted and “replacing Dominik.” The camera then cut to Dominik who did not look pleased.

Konnan was amazing here and got the crowd super into it.

Rey comes out. Dominik and Ripley are the only ones on the stage who don’t stand up and cheer. Rey walks past and there is no exchange between them.

“You deserve it” chants ring out throughout the arena. Rey told them to stop so he doesn’t cry more. A really big, long ovation for Rey. He thanked Konnan for the introduction. And with that, Dominik, Ripley, and Damian Priest stood up and left to a chorus of boos. Rey looked upset but composed himself. Rey told the crowd he “would take care of business tomorrow,” which got a big reaction.

Rey spoke about starting his career in Mexico and backyards in Los Angeles. He said he wanted to follow in his uncle, Rey Mysterio Sr’s footsteps. He loved Lucha libre and started training at eight years old. His uncle would chop him so hard that he would bail out of the ring and hide in a corner.

Rey talked about meeting Konnan when he was 12. It was a little brother, big brother relationship. He told a story about having to get his wrestling license in Mexico, which was difficult because he hadn’t even turned 15 yet. Rey’s father signed a waiver thinking that he would quit. He talked about it being hard to get booked because of his size.

Rey talked about Konnan calling him when he was starting AAA and said Konnan wouldn’t let him turn down the opportunity. Rey said he couldn’t leave his girlfriend but Konnan responded that “if she loves you, she’ll wait for you” and now that woman is his wife. He talked about her sending him money when he was on the road and broke, which got an “Angie” chant from the crowd.

Rey continued to talk about ECW and gave a special mention to Psicosis and Dean Malenko. He spoke about WCW and his relationship with Eddie Guerrero, which got a big reaction from the crowd. Rey mentioned he took some time off after WWE bought WCW as his daughter, Aalyah, was just born.

He moved on to his WWE career next. He thanked anyone who had anything to do with his story and his success. Rey thanked his family, his coaches, and the veterans who broke him in. He specifically mentioned Konnan, and said he and his wife have a saying that they thank God first for everything they have, and Konnan second.

Rey also thanked Paul Heyman, Eric Bischoff, Kevin Sullivan, and everyone he was ever in the ring with. William Regal, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, all the agents he’s worked with, Batista, Undertaker, Edge, JBL, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, John Cena, and Eddie Guerrero all received mention from Rey here. He thanked the WWE Universe as well and wrapped up his speech. Rey hugged several people ringside and received a standing ovation from the crowd as the show went off the air.

Vickie Guerrero wishes she was part of Rey Mysterio & Dominik WWE angle

Vickie Guerrero is looking forward to seeing what happens at WrestleMania with Rey and Dominik Mysterio

Guerrero told The Whole Story podcast recently that she only wishes she had a part in the angle. She also said they have her full support.

Guerrero said:

My only reaction is that I wish I was part of it! I just think they are having so much fun. Dominik and Rhea have always texted me and we talk back and forth and they’ve always had my support.

Guerrero said she was amazed at how much Eddie and Dominik looked alike when she saw side-by-side photos of them that Dominik posted to Twitter.

She continued:

It was remarkable how much they looked alike. I told Dominik, ‘you have this honorary position of having Eddie live in the storyline and you have my support.’ He’s so full of gratitude. And Rey, I love him and Angie.

I wish I was there to see it. They are doing a great job and I’m really happy for them and I want to see what happens at WrestleMania and see what they do with it.

Vickie Guerrero is set to officially leave AEW this July, according to a report from Fightful. She would later write on Twitter that the promotion had requested her to stay home from events.

@aew requested for me to stay home and I am not at events…I have no doubts that the #viciousvixens @NylaRoseBeast @MarinaShafir will have the fans witness a destructive match against Riho!!

She also posted a photo of her at an airport in Tampa last month with the caption, “Today a new journey begins…..my life is fulfilled with excitement and new opportunities.”

VIDEO: Dave Meltzer & Bryan Alvarez discuss Rey Mysterio/Dominik angle on WWE SmackDown

Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the angle that finally set up Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio at WrestleMania 39.

On Friday’s SmackDown, Dominik Mysterio berated his mother at ringside after Rey walked away from another confrontation. After Dominik told his mother to shut up, Rey returned to ringside and slapped Dominik, finally accepting Dominik’s challenge for WrestleMania. Both Alvarez and Meltzer thought it was a well done angle.

“It worked out great,” Alvarez said. “I liked the idea of the Hall of Fame angle with Konnan because they’ve never done that at a Hall of Fame before. It would be a first time thing and a perfect scenario to do it.”

Meltzer said this was better because it is likely WWE doesn’t want Konnan to be in a high profile situation, given the complicated political situation between AAA and AEW, with Konnan recently being in a hype video for Vikingo ahead of his match against Kenny Omega on last week’s Dynamite.

“As far as Rey’s motivation for finally giving in, you know, when he’s really mouthing off to mom, that’s the one,” Meltzer said.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Rey Mysterio punches Dominik

It will officially be father vs. son at WrestleMania 39.

After repeatedly refusing to face Dominik at WrestleMania, Rey Mysterio finally agreed to the match on SmackDown last night. Dominik disrespecting his mother Angie led to Rey punching Dominik and accepting his WrestleMania challenge.

Angie and Aalyah Mysterio were sitting in the front row as Rey faced LA Knight on SmackDown. During the match, Dominik entered and watched on from ringside. Rey was going for a 619 when Dominik interfered and stopped him. Knight then rolled up Rey to get the victory.

Rey walked away instead of getting into it with Dominik after the match. But Dominik turned his attention to his mother and sister, calling Angie a “deadbeat mom” and calling Aalyah stupid. Angie tried to talk to Dominik, but Dominik told her to shut up. Rey then ran back down and punched Dominik in the face.

“You pushed me. You pushed me to do this. I didn’t want to hit you — you made me hit you,” Rey told Dominik. “You don’t disrespect your mother like that. That’s my wife. You wanted a fight at WrestleMania? You’re on. I’ll see you at WrestleMania, son.”

Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio official for WWE WrestleMania 39

A Father vs. Son match is on for WWE WrestleMania 39.

After months of refusing to fight his son, Rey Mysterio finally agreed to face Dominik in a match at WrestleMania following an angle on Friday’s WWE SmackDown.

Dominik was ringside for a Rey vs. LA Knight match on SmackDown, tripping Rey and allowing Knight to score an upset victory. After the match, Dominik berated his mother Angie, who was sitting ringside along with Aalyah Mysterio.

The tipping point for Rey came when Dominik called his mother “a deadbeat” and told her to “shut up.” Rey then struck Dominik and agreed to face him at WrestleMania.

Rey will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Friday, March 31, the day before night one of WrestleMania.

Here is the announced WrestleMania card to this point:

Mysterio family segment added to this week’s WWE SmackDown

The storyline between Rey and Dominik will continue on Friday’s WWE SmackDown with a Mysterio family segment.

As announced during Monday’s Raw, Rey, Dominik, Angie, and Aalyah Mysterio will be live on Friday’s SmackDown in Las Vegas as Dominik continues his storyline push for a WrestleMania 39 match against Rey.

Dominik Mysterio defeated Johnny Gargano in singles action on Monday’s Raw, then announced that he had found a path to a WrestleMania match against Rey, and will ask his mother for permission for the match on SmackDown.

Rey has repeatedly refused to fight his son at WrestleMania, but the match continues to be heavily teased on WWE programming. It was announced during last week’s SmackDown that Rey will take on LA Knight in singles competition on this week’s episode.

Rey Mysterio will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Friday, March 31.

Here is the updated lineup for Friday’s SmackDown:

  • Cody Rhodes vs. Ludwig Kaiser
  • Rey Mysterio vs. LA Knight
  • Mysterio family segment

February 6, 2006 Observer Newsletter: Royal Rumble, WWE business notes

The WWE’s Wrestlemania season got under way with a Royal Rumble that was to set the stage for the next few months.

There were a lot of major decisions to consider, such as who would win the Rumble, having to commit to the Mania main matches, as well as setting up No Way Out. As things stand, the top five matches at Mania on 4/2 in Chicago are scheduled as new WWE champ John Cena vs. HHH for the title, Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton for the World title, Vince McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels, Edge vs. Mick Foley and Undertaker vs. Mark Henry. The only other stuff hinted at on Raw was Carlito vs. Rob Van Dam and Ric Flair vs. Shelton Benjamin for the IC title.

As noted before, there has been a plan for Benjamin to get that title, but they also need some marquee matches for the Saturday Night’s Main Event special. I can see them doing another Cena vs. Edge blow-off where Cena gets a clean win before Mania there.
