Rey Mysterio vs. LA Knight set for next WWE SmackDown

A match between LA Knight and Rey Mysterio is set for next week’s SmackDown.

Friday’s show had Knight walk up to Mysterio, saying he would take care of his son for him since he wouldn’t, saying he would change his name to LA Mysterio so he could be a deadbeat dad as well. Mysterio slapped him and walked off.

Earlier in the show, Dominik started to berate his father again. Rey came out and confronted his son, saying it was true that he wasn’t around for him growing up, but Dominik got everything he ever wanted because Rey was away from home working to make sure he got it. Rey told his son that if it were anyone else, he wouldn’t have a problem taking out a punk kid like him at WrestleMania. But he again stated that he wouldn’t wrestle his own son and walked off. Dominik mocked his father again as Rey left.

LA Knight also wrestled on Friday, losing to Xavier Woods after the two had a confrontation backstage.

Next week’s SmackDown will take place at the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dominik Mysterio challenges Rey Mysterio for WWE WrestleMania 39

Dominik Mysterio has officially issued a challenge to his father for WrestleMania 39.

On Monday’s Raw, Rey came out to talk about the announcement of his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame last Friday. But just like last Friday, his son Dominik came out to confront him. Dominik said that Rey was never there for him while growing up and issued the challenge for WrestleMania. Rey reiterated that he would never fight him and exited the ring as Dominik continued to taunt him.

The feud between the Mysterios dates back to last September, when Dominik turned on his father to join The Judgment Day. Rey became distraught by Dominik’s betrayal and refused to fight him, going as far as to switch to the SmackDown brand to avoid him. Despite the move, in recent weeks Dominik has continued to provoke and even assault his father.

The Mysterio family were also part of several holiday vignettes in which Dominik attacked his father during Thanksgiving, almost assaulted his mother before being arrested on Christmas Eve, and ruined a dinner date between Rey and his wife on Valentine’s Day.

Wrestling Observer Live: WBD bets on more AEW, WWE bets on gambling

On the Sunday edition of Wrestling Observer Live, I am back talking all the latest in the world of professional wrestling.

There have been rumblings as of late of another AEW wrestling show on a Warner Bros Discovery network. I talk about what I have heard, what that might look like, and what audience it might be trying to reach.

WWE has contacted several state gaming commissions including Michigan, Colorado, and Indiana about potentially having live betting on its matches. We talk about the pros and cons of and the likelihood that this process would not get corrupted.

Rey Mysterio is the first name announced for this year’s WWE Hall of Fame class. Will this play into the storyline with his son Dominik? Also, WrestleMania 39 is starting to really take shape as more matches were announced last week including John Cena vs. Austin Theory.

Plus, we preview this Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, give thoughts on the Iron Match from AEW Revolution, and more!

Wrestling Observer Live: WWE gambling song, Ruby Soho promo analysis

It’s Saturday and that means Wrestling Observer Live with myself, Jim Valley.

We got another #becauseofthefans promo this week on AEW Dynamite from Ruby Soho, but let’s analyze and decide if it indeed qualifies as #becauseofthefans.

Gambling and WWE made headlines this week as they are making inroads to having legalized betting on matches in select U.S. states.

Everyone is asking the obvious questions, but nobody is asking the most important question: what would Kenny Rogers say? Let’s answer that question in song with vocals by Matthew Lindley (aka Matthew Lindley on Bandcamp)

Plus, let’s talk Rey Mysterio to the WWE Hall of Fame, a new sponsor, and more.

This is a very fun show, so check it out.

Konnan to induct Rey Mysterio into WWE Hall of Fame

Konnan will be taking part in this year’s WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.

Dave Meltzer confirms that Konnan will induct his friend Rey Mysterio into the WWE Hall of Fame at this month’s ceremony over WrestleMania week in Los Angeles. Meltzer notes that WWE approved Mysterio’s request to have Konnan induct him.

“Konnan will be inducting Rey into the Hall of Fame,” Meltzer wrote. “Rey asked for him and the company approved it. As noted last night, to me it was the only choice.”

Konnan inducting Mysterio was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Mysterio was revealed as the first inductee for the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame class on SmackDown last night. The video package announcing his induction can be seen below:

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is taking place at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles after SmackDown on Friday, March 31. The Great Muta will also reportedly be an inductee in this year’s class.

Mysterio is currently feuding with his son Dominik leading into WrestleMania.

Rey Mysterio to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame

Rey Mysterio is the first inductee announced for this year’s WWE Hall of Fame.

Mysterio was announced during Friday’s SmackDown. After a video had aired showing his career highlights, Mysterio came out and started to speak when his son, Dominik, interrupted. Legado de Fantasma then came out, with Santos Escobar demanding they start the six-man tag now between Legado de Fantasma and Judgment day. Judgment Day ended up winning the match.

After the match, Dominik asked his father to enter the ring. He continued to berate him, eventually telling Rey that he should have been Eddie Guerrero’s son. Dominik then attacked his father, but Rey sent him out of the ring to end the segment.

Mysterio started his career in 1989, wrestling in the independent scene before starting with AAA in 1992. After a short run in ECW, Mysterio wrestled for WCW starting in 1996 through the company’s closure in 2001. In 2002, he signed with the WWE, winning the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight titles throughout his long run in the company. After leaving WWE for a brief period starting in 2015, he returned to the company in 2018 and has spent recent years teaming with his son, Dominik Mysterio, before Dominik turned on him last fall.

This year’s WWE Hall of Fame ceremony will take place after WWE SmackDown on March 31 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. It will stream live on Peacock.

VIDEO: Rhea Ripley & Dominik confront Rey Mysterio in WWE Valentine’s Day angle

Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley attempted to ruin another holiday for Rey Mysterio, but again it didn’t go well.

WWE on social media posted the latest angle between Dominik, Ripley, Rey Mysterio, and his wife Angie over Valentine’s Day dinner. You can view the video below.

In the video, Dominik and Ripley confront Mysterio and his wife when they all end up in the same restaurant for Valentine’s Day dinner. Rey and Angie leave, leaving Ripley and Dominik to use their table for dinner. When it comes time to pay, Dominik finds out that Rey has frozen him off financially, with his credit cards no longer working. Seeing police officers nearby, Dominik bails, leaving Ripley to foot the bill.

Similar videos have aired between the Mysterios starting with Thanksgiving, where Dominik Mysterio attacked his father inside the family home. On Christmas, Dominik attempted to confront his father inside his grandparents house but was eventually arrested. In recent weeks, Dominik has claimed that he served hard time despite only spending a few hours in jail.

Rey & Dominik Mysterio angle to air on WWE SmackDown

WWE filmed an angle at the LA Coliseum on Thursday and plans to air the footage on SmackDown.

A short clip of Dominik Mysterio confronting his father after racing with NASCAR was posted to WWE’s social media Friday afternoon.

The video shows New Day members Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston hoisting an apparently victorious Rey Mysterio in the air when Dominik accused him of cheating. The video cuts out before the two sides became physical.

NASCAR is in LA for the annual Clash at the Coliseum event taking place this weekend.

WWE SmackDown on February 3, 2023, will take place at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. The updated lineup for the show is below:

  • Roman Reigns appears
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair defends against Sonya Deville
  • SmackDown Tag Team title contender’s tournament finals: Braun Strowman & Ricochet vs. Imperium (Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci)
  • Women’s Elimination Chamber qualifying match: Shayna Baszler vs. Shotzi vs. Zelina Vega vs. Natalya
  • Footage of Rey Mysterio and New Day’s confrontation with Judgment Day after NASCAR race

Rey Mysterio injured on WWE SmackDown, pulled from Royal Rumble

An injury prevented Rey Mysterio from taking part in the Royal Rumble.

Mysterio was announced as the 17th entrant but never did make his way to the ring when his music played. His son Dominik entered at #18 and ripped up one of his father’s masks as he walked down the aisle.

Our own Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Mysterio wasn’t in the Rumble due to suffering an injury at SmackDown on Friday.

Meltzer said:

Rey Mysterio was injured last night in Laredo at the SmackDown tapings in a match with Karrion Kross. He was going to be in the Rumble, that spot was changed and then what happened was they did a spot where he’s supposed to come out, he doesn’t come out, and then Dominik comes out. I think they were actually supposed to do some teases with them in the Rumble to set up the WrestleMania match but, obviously, they couldn’t do it because Rey’s injured.

Dominik, I guess, the idea was he came out with Rey’s mask with the idea that somehow maybe Judgment Day beat up Rey backstage and Dominik had the mask and that’s the way they are going to do the angle.

Hopefully, Rey’s injury isn’t anything serious but I guess it was serious enough that he couldn’t do what was planned in the match.

Mysterio defeated Kross on SmackDown in a match that went seven minutes and 25 seconds.

Dominik lasted more than 25 minutes in the men’s Royal Rumble match. He was the 22nd wrestler eliminated when he was tossed out by the eventual winner, Cody Rhodes.

Three more competitors announced for WWE Royal Rumble

Rey Mysterio, Raquel Rodriguez, and Gunther are the latest to declare for this year’s Royal Rumble.

On Friday’s SmackDown, both Rey Mysterio and Gunther declared their entry for the men’s Rumble match. Raquel Rodriguez in a promo said she was excited to enter her first Royal Rumble.

Mysterio, in a promo, said that it wasn’t the best holiday season for him due to Dominik Mysterio’s unwelcomed arrival during his family’s festivites. However, he said that the best way for himself to get back on track is by winning the Royal Rumble.

Gunther successfully defended the Intercontinental title on Friday’s show, defeating Braun Strowman with a powerbomb. Later backstage, Gunther declared for the Rumble, saying that Friday’s win over Strowman was glorious, but now it’s time to capitalize by winning the Royal Rumble.

After Raquel Rodriguez announced she was entering the Royal Rumble, she and Liv Morgan got into a confrontation, leading to a match between the two. Rodriguez won the match with the Tejana bomb.

Here is the updated Royal Rumble lineup:

WWE Royal Rumble, Saturday, January 28, 8 p.m. Eastern time on Peacock and WWE Network —

  • Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Kevin Owens
  • Mountain Dew Pitch Black match: Bray Wyatt vs. LA Knight
  • Men’s Royal Rumble match:
    • Ricochet
    • Kofi Kingston
    • Seth Rollins
    • Bobby Lashley
    • Austin Theory
    • Gunther
    • Rey Mysterio
  • Women’s Royal Rumble match:
    • Liv Morgan
    • Rhea Ripley
    • Candice LeRae
    • Raquel Rodriguez

VIDEO: Rhea Ripley & Dominik confront Rey Mysterio in WWE Christmas Eve angle

Dominik Mysterio & Rhea Ripley interrupted the holidays for the Mysterio family once again, and this time Rey was prepared.

WWE posted a video Saturday on their social media accounts showing Dominik being arrested by police after Dominik and Ripley appeared at his grandfather’s house, confronting his father and mother on Christmas Eve. You can see the footage below:

In the video, Dominik and Ripley enter his grandfather’s house where he quickly taunts his father and mother. Rey told his son that he would meet him outside. It was there that Dominik dared Rey to hit him, shoving Rey. Dominik’s mother Angie raised her hand, but was stopped by Ripley. Angie then slapped Ripley. That was when police showed up and eventually arrested Dominik, who instructed Ripley to “call Finn and Priest” before being taken away.

WWE aired a similar angle last month during Thanksgiving. In that video, Dominik confronted his father and eventually attacked him inside his own house, targeting his knee.

VIDEO: Rhea Ripley & Dominik attack Rey Mysterio in WWE Thanksgiving angle

Judgment Day has ruined Thanksgiving for the Mysterio family.

WWE posted a video to social media on Thursday featuring Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio arriving uninvited at Rey Mysterio’s home. Dominik attempted to explain that he was there for Thanksgiving dinner and he simply wanted to introduce “Mami” to the family. This was not well-received by his parents.

“It’s not the time, Dom,” Rey told his son. “Please, don’t play stupid with me. Today is not the time. Let us enjoy Thanksgiving.”

Rey attempted to close the door but Ripley barged in. Dominik then attacked Rey, who was shown wearing a walking boot in the video.

Mysterio is currently sidelined with a lower body injury and hasn’t wrestled since a house show in Mexico City on October 30. He was scheduled to take part in the SmackDown World Cup but was replaced by Mustafa Ali.

Mysterio’s status was addressed earlier this month by our own Dave Meltzer.

Dave writes:

Rey Mysterio was scheduled for the World Cup but he had either a foot or an ankle injury and was replaced by Mustafa Ali. He was in Indianapolis backstage with a walking boot on. He’s not expected to be out more than a few weeks but wasn’t going to be able to do the tournament.
