New faction introduced at NJPW New Year Dash

Double champion Yota Tsuji has introduced a new faction into the NJPW ranks.

At New Year Dash 2026 on Monday, Tsuji announced the formation of a new faction named “Unbound Company.” It will see former Los Ingobernables de Japon members Tsuji, Hiromu Takahashi & Shingo Takagi officially align with the Bullet Club War Dogs after the two sides had already been working together.

“There’s something I need to say here today. Until now, Bullet Club War Dogs and the Independents have been working together. But that ends today,” Tsuji announced. “From now on, we will fight as one unit. Our name is Unbound Co. An organization that is not bound by anyone.”

Tsuji defeated Konosuke Takeshita at Wrestle Kingdom 20 to retain the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship and win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. He is now locked into a feud against United Empire, with Tsuji, Takagi, David Finlay & Drilla Moloney losing to Jake Lee, Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan & HENARE in an eight-man tag match at New Year Dash.

Jake Lee was added to United Empire at Wrestle Kingdom 20 and attacked Tsuji, likely putting himself in IWGP World Heavyweight Championship contention. It was revealed at New Year Dash that Gabe Kidd and Andrade El Idolo will soon face off to determine a challenger for Tsuji’s Global Heavyweight title.

At New Year Dash, Tsuji brought back the fan-favorite classic design of the IWGP Championship that had been retired in 2021.

Title change takes place at NJPW New Year Dash

A title change took place on Monday to help kick off a new era for NJPW.

Following the retirement of Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 20, NJPW was immediately back in action with New Year Dash 2026 being held at Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo. The card saw new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions crowned with the Ichiban Sweet Boys (Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita) prevailing in a four-way match.

Eagles & Fujita defeated DOUKI & SHO, Taiji Ishimori & Robbie X, and El Desperado & Kuukai to win the belts. House of Torture tried to interfere to help DOUKI & SHO keep their titles, but Eagles & Fujita were able to dispatch of Yoshibonu Kanemaru and pin Robbie X to become champions.

This marks the second time that Eagles & Fujita have been IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions together. Their first reign lasted for nearly four months from January-April 2025.

Eagles & Fujita are members of the NJPW faction TMDK. Their stablemates Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa had the chance to bring more gold to TMDK at New Year Dash but fell short in their attempt to win the IWGP Tag Team titles. In the main event of NJPW’s first show of the post-Tanahashi era, the Knock Out Brothers (OSKAR & Yuto-Ice) defeated Sabre & Oiwa to remain the champions of the heavyweight tag team division.

Top NJPW tag team addresses contract rumors

The Knock Out Brothers (OSKAR & Yuto-Ice) are still the IWGP Tag Team Champions — and they have no plans on leaving NJPW.

In the main event of New Year Dash 2026, OSKAR & Yuto-Ice retained their IWGP Tag Team titles over Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa. There had been rumors going into the show that WWE is interested in signing the Knock Out Brothers. Without directly mentioning WWE by name, the champs addressed those rumors after their victory.

“Whatever rumors you might hear, we are never going anywhere,” Yuto-Ice said in his backstage comments.

The Knock Out Brothers — who have held the IWGP Tag Team belts since September — were one of pro wrestling’s standout duos of 2025, winning Best Tag Team in the Tokyo Sports awards. They retained by pinning Oiwa at New Year Dash.

Shota Umino & Yuya Uemura and Tomohiro Ishii & Taichi each made their way out to challenge the Knockout Brothers at the end of New Year Dash. The champions suggested that Umino & Uemura face off with Ishii & Taichi to decide which team gets the next shot at their titles. OSKAR & Yuto-Ice already own victories over both of those teams, including defeating Ishii & Taichi to begin their title reign.

SANADA teases departure from NJPW

A former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion could be on his way out of NJPW.

Following Wrestle Kingdom 20, a new season for NJPW kicked off on Monday with New Year Dash 2026. SANADA — who competed in a six-man tag match on the show — indicated that he is leaving NJPW. He carried a guitar with the message “goodbye NJPW” and said he is going on a journey.

“I’m leaving this ring for good today,” SANADA said in his post-match comments. “I’m going on a journey.”

House of Torture (SANADA, Yujiro Takahashi & Yoshinobu Kanemaru) lost to Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Oleg Boltin at New Year Dash with Takahashi taking the pin.

There have also been rumors that House of Torture leader EVIL could potentially explore free agency. If this is not a storyline, one option that could make sense is SANADA and EVIL joining their former Los Ingobernables de Japon stablemates in Pro Wrestling NOAH. Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI just won the GHC Tag Team titles for NOAH on January 1.

SANADA has been with NJPW on a full-time basis since 2016, with his run including one IWGP World Heavyweight Championship reign and multiple reigns with the IWGP Tag Team titles.

Hiroshi Tanahashi has ‘no worries’ NJPW will cool off after his retirement

Hiroshi Tanahashi isn’t worried that NJPW will experience a business drop-off after his retirement.

Ahead of his final match taking place on January 4, Tanahashi participated in one last interview with NJPW’s website. Tanahashi stated that, while his retirement match might be the main draw, he hopes that fans attending Wrestle Kingdom 20 find other wrestlers that they can connect with. He believes there are plenty of strong options on the NJPW roster.

“My retirement might have been what drew the house, but I feel my job on January 4 is to connect the fans to the wrestlers that will be there after I’m done,” Tanahashi said. “I hope people will leave saying that they’ve seen a ton of great wrestlers they want to get behind in the future. The great thing about wrestling is once you’re in you’re in, and you really get hooked. I think there’s plenty of wrestlers to keep the fans hooked, and I have no worries that we’ll be hot after my retirement.”

Tanahashi is the real-life president of NJPW and has now worked in that executive role for two years. It’s a job that will keep him busy even after he steps away from the ring, but the 49-year-old Tanahashi is looking forward to spending more time with his family now that the responsibilities of being an active wrestler are gone.

“I spent so much time not just wrestling and on the road but being in the gym and trying to be at my best possible form physically. Without wrestling driving that, maybe there is time for hobbies but it’s more about my family,” he said. “They might get mad and say it’s too little too late but I missed out on a lot and I want to spend more quality time with them. I want to have gratitude in my heart and be there for my son and daughter.”

Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada will headline the sold-out Wrestle Kingdom show on January 4. The event is set to air live on NJPW World.

NJPW reveals talent list for New Year Dash 2026

While most of the matches will remain a mystery, NJPW has revealed the list of talent set for action at New Year Dash 2026.

The annual post-Wrestle Kingdom event is being held at Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo on January 5. It’s already been announced that an IWGP Tag Team Championship match will headline the Dash lineup with Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa challenging OSKAR & Yuto-Ice. The rest of the card will be determined by the results of Wrestle Kingdom, but NJPW has confirmed that the following talent are scheduled to compete:

Either Takeshita or Tsuji will be entering New Year Dash as a double champion. They’re set to clash at Wrestle Kingdom with the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship both on the line.

Wolf, an Olympic gold medalist in judo, could also be a champion by the time New Year Dash begins. He is making his pro wrestling debut at Wrestle Kingdom, challenging EVIL for the NEVER Openweight Championship.

Andrade, now free to wrestle elsewhere following a holdup with his WWE non-compete clause, has been announced for Wrestle Kingdom and New Year Dash. Both shows will air live on NJPW World.

Hiroshi Tanahashi issues New Year’s message to NJPW fans

In his role as company president, Hiroshi Tanahashi sent out a message on Wednesday thanking NJPW fans for their support in 2025.

The message — translated on NJPW’s English-language website — included Tanahashi wishing fans a happy new year. He vowed that everyone in NJPW will work together to deliver “even more exciting” events in 2026. The promotion’s year kicks off at the Tokyo Dome on January 4 with Wrestle Kingdom 20, which will be headlined by Tanahashi’s retirement match:

Tanahashi wrote:

  • Happy New Year, everybody.
  • Thank you to all of you for coming to NJPW matches and showing your support in 2025.
  • In 2026, all NJPW staff and wrestlers will be working together to make events and broadcasts even more exciting.
  • On a personal note, of course my year will start January 4 in the Tokyo Dome and the end of my pro-wrestling career. I’ll be giving it my all and my absolute best. I’m so excited to see and experience a sold out Tokyo Dome along with all of you at Wrestle Kingdom 20.
  • Of course, if you’re not in the building, we will be live on NJPW World, with the event also having a special airing in prime time on TV Asahi in Japan.
  • Wherever you are we hope you enjoy a historic event to the fullest.
  • Of course, this year like every year, I love you all- aishitemasu!
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • President/CEO
  • New Japan Pro-Wrestling

Wrestle Kingdom has a start time of 2 a.m. Eastern in the United States. Kazuchika Okada will be Tanahashi’s opponent at the show, with Okada making the trip back to Japan to renew his rivalry with Tanahashi one last time.

Along with Okada, AEW stars Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay will be present at Wrestle Kingdom for Tanahashi’s retirement ceremony.

Tomohiro Ishii returning for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20

An injury has kept him sidelined for a couple of months now, but Tomohiro Ishii will be back in time for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20.

It’s been revealed that Ishii will have a spot on the Tokyo Dome card in the multi-team ranbo match for the NEVER Openweight Tag Team titles. He’ll be teaming up with Taichi & Satoshi Kojima. There was dissension between those two at Friday’s Road to Tokyo Dome event, but Kojima still volunteered himself to team with Taichi & Ishii in the ranbo.

This will be Ishii’s first match back since suffering a dislocated right shoulder while competing for AEW in October.

YOH, Master Wato & Toru Yano are defending their NEVER Six-Man Tag Team titles in the ranbo. It’s a tornado match where eliminations can occur via pinfall, submission, or being thrown over the top rope. Once one member from a team is out, the whole team is eliminated.

Among the other teams set for the match are Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Oleg Boltin; SANADA, Ren Narito & Yoshinobu Kanemaru; and Tiger Mask IV, Togi Makabe & Ryusuke Taguchi.

Kaisei Takechi — who competes for DDT Pro Wrestling and is a member of pop group The Rampage — will be part of the ranbo as well. His partners have not been announced yet.

Hiroshi Tanahashi doesn’t want to ‘look older or slower’ in NJPW retirement match

In his retirement match, Hiroshi Tanahashi is hoping to turn back the clock and deliver one last great performance.

NJPW held a public training session with Tanahashi and Aaron Wolf this week to promote their respective matches at Wrestle Kingdom 20. Tanahashi is ending his legendary career by facing Kazuchika Okada at the show, while Wolf will start his own pro wrestling journey by challenging EVIL for the NEVER Openweight Championship.

Tanahashi was asked what he wants fans to see in his last match.

“I don’t want them to justify my retirement. I don’t want them to see me look older or slower, but to see a Tanahashi who can still go, and that everybody else is chasing right to the end,” he said.

The Tanahashi vs. Okada match is a renewal of one of pro wrestling’s greatest rivalries. Their matches were crucial to the new golden era that NJPW experienced, and Okada — now signed to AEW — is returning home for Wrestle Kingdom to help Tanahashi end his career in style.

Tanahashi is the real-life president of NJPW and will remain in that role after his in-ring retirement. Wolf, an Olympic gold medalist in judo, is a prospect that the company has high hopes for.

“Some wrestlers retire more than once (laughs). But there’s only one debut,” Tanahashi responded when asked if he has advice for Wolf’s first match. “It’s an important point. I want him to put in the absolute best he has.”

Tanahashi vs. Okada will be the main event of the January 4 Wrestle Kingdom show. EVIL vs. Wolf is going on third-to-last.

Before Wrestle Kingdom, Tanahashi has matches coming up against Hiromu Takahashi, El Desperado, and Kosei Fujita.

Title match to headline NJPW New Year Dash 2026

Gold will be on the line at NJPW New Year Dash 2026 when Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa get their shot at the IWGP Tag Team titles.

The main event of the January 5 show will see Sabre & Oiwa challenge OSKAR & Yuto-Ice for the belts. It’s a title shot that Sabre & Oiwa earned through winning NJPW’s World Tag League tournament. Though the winners traditionally get their title shot at Wrestle Kingdom, that won’t be the case this time.

NJPW explained Sabre & Oiwa waiting to get their title shot by highlighting how important of a position the New Year Dash main event is this time around. It’s a chance to help kickstart a new era for NJPW following the retirement of Hiroshi Tanahashi.

“Of course, I want to be in the Tokyo Dome match too,” Oiwa said in an interview. “But the main event of the next show after Mr. Tanahashi leaves is the one that will most impact New Japan’s future. I feel a sense of mission because I think it’s an absolutely crucial event we cannot fail.”

Tanahashi’s last match will headline the January 4 Wrestle Kingdom show at the Tokyo Dome. He’s facing off against longtime Kazuchika Okada at the event.

Ota City Gymnasium in Tokyo will then host New Year Dash. The show — which is traditionally a mystery card with little announced in advance — will air live on NJPW World.

During World Tag League, Sabre & Oiwa lost to OSKAR & Yuto-Ice in block action. But both teams were able to make it to the semifinals out of B Block. Sabre & Oiwa went on to win the tournament, while OSKAR & Yuto-Ice fell to Yota Tsuji & Gabe Kidd.

NJPW confirms Wrestle Kingdom 20 main event

Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement match is officially set to close NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20.

NJPW has revealed the match order for the January 4 Tokyo Dome show, confirming that Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada will be the main event. It will be the final match Tanahashi — one of the greatest wrestlers of his time who helped lead NJPW into a new golden era — ever competes in.

Okada, now signed to AEW, is returning to NJPW for this match to help give Tanahashi a fitting sendoff. Throughout their careers, Tanahashi has been a rival, friend, and mentor to Okada.

The semi-main event of Wrestle Kingdom will be Konosuke Takeshita vs. Yota Tsuji in a matchup where the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship and Global Heavyweight Championship are both on the line.

In a recent interview with NJPW, Okada explained why he thought his match against Tanahashi should headline over the double title bout.

“I’ve always thought that the IWGP title should absolutely go on last, but in a situation like this Tanahashi’s last match should absolutely go on last. That’s what people are coming to see,” Okada said. “Maybe this is pushing it a bit but it’s kind of like eating your meal, having dessert and then in comes a second entree. People might be stuffed, but even then, maybe because of that I like the main event better.”

Even after ending his in-ring career, the 49-year-old Tanahashi will remain hugely important to NJPW as the promotion’s real-life president.

Tickets to the show have completely sold out, with this set to be the best-attended Wrestle Kingdom ever. The event will be broadcast live on NJPW World.

Here is the announced lineup:

NJPW announces huge ticket milestone for Wrestle Kingdom 20

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 has reached a huge ticket milestone.

It was announced overnight that tickets to the January 4 Tokyo Dome show have officially sold out. NJPW sent out a message thanking the fans for making this happen but did not provide an exact number of tickets sold. There are expected to be more than 50,000 fans attending the show.

Wrestle Kingdom 20 will feature the retirement of all-time great Hiroshi Tanahashi, who is facing off against his longtime rival Kazuchika Okada. The other top match on the card is Konosuke Takeshita vs. Yota Tsuji in a winner-take-all match for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship.

In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that this will be the best-attended Wrestle Kingdom ever and the best NJPW crowd since the late 1990s.

“The 1/4 Tokyo Dome has now sold out every possible ticket they could sell. It already broke the attendance and gate record for a Wrestle Kingdom show,” Meltzer wrote. “From a legitimate attendance mark it would be the biggest since the Antonio Inoki retirement show in 1998. It was said to be one of the three most in-demand tickets (along with that show and the 1995 Keiji Muto vs. Nobuhiko Takada IWGP title match) in company history.”

The match order for Wrestle Kingdom 20 has not been revealed yet. The show is set to stream live on NJPW World and has the following matches booked so far:

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 (Sunday, January 4, 2026) —

  • Kaisei Takechi in action

NJPW World Tag League 2025 finals set

The finals of NJPW World Tag League 2025 are now set with Yota Tsuji & Gabe Kidd advancing over the IWGP Tag Team Champions.

It will be Tsuji & Kidd vs. Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa this Sunday (December 14) to determine the winners of World Tag League 2025. That was confirmed this morning with Tsuji & Kidd defeating OSKAR & Yuto-Ice to earn their spot in the finals.

There has been dissension between Tsuji & Kidd throughout the tournament due to them being a makeshift team of singles wrestlers, but they vowed to get onto the same page heading into the finals. After Tsuji took out Yuto-Ice, they used their double-team War Blaster finisher on OSKAR to get the win after a 20-minute match.

A face-to-face between Tsuji & Kidd and Sabre & Oiwa then took place at the end of today’s show, with Kidd telling Sabre that he’s surpassed him as the best English wrestler in NJPW. The confrontation broke up without any physicality. Tsuji & Kidd then cut a promo to close the night.

Both Tsuji & Kidd and Sabre & Oiwa finished in second place of their respective block but managed to defeat the other block’s champion in the semifinals. No matter which team prevails on Sunday, it will be their first time winning Tag League. Kidd was in the 2024 finals — but he and SANADA lost to Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi.

The winning team will earn bragging rights, the World Tag League 2025 trophy, and the right to challenge OSKAR & Yuto-Ice for the IWGP Tag Team titles.

First team advances to NJPW World Tag League 2025 finals

Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa are heading to the finals of NJPW World Tag League 2025.

The tournament semifinals began today with TMDK defeating Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) to earn their spot in Sunday’s finals. They’ll be facing either OSKAR & Yuto Ice or Yota Tsuji & Gabe Kidd to determine the Tag League champions.

Sabre & Oiwa finished second in B Block but were able to defeat the A Block champions in the semifinals. At the end of a 24-minute match, Oiwa connected with a Chaos Theory suplex on Goto. Sabre then followed up with a pin on Goto for the win.

Backstage after their victory, Oiwa spoke about wanting to claim his first trophy in NJPW. Sabre said they’re ready to defeat whichever team they face in the finals.

OSKAR & Yuto-Ice and Tsuji & Kidd had a confrontation on today’s show ahead of their semifinal match taking place this Friday. Tsuji & Kidd, who have had dissension despite a successful run in the tournament, agreed to stop bickering and get on the same page.

The Tag League finals are happening in Kumamoto on December 14. Along with bragging rights, the match will determine challengers for the IWGP Tag Team titles (if champions OSKAR & Yuto-Ice do not win).

NJPW World Tag League 2025 semifinals set

Four teams are remaining in NJPW World Tag League 2025.

The semifinals for the tournament were locked in this morning with OSKAR & Yuto Ice and Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa advancing out of B Block with eight points. The Block finished in a four-way tie at the top of the standings, but these two teams came out on top based on tiebreakers. They join A Block representatives Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI and Yota Tsuji & Gabe Kidd in the semifinals.

Here are the quick results from today:

  • B Block: David Finlay & Hiromu Takahashi defeated Great-O-Khan & Callum Newman
  • B Block: Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa defeated Lance Archer & Alex Zayne
  • B Block: Hiroshi Tanahashi & El Phantasmo defeated SANADA & Ren Narita
  • Yota Tsuji, Gabe Kidd & Gedo defeated Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Tatsuya Matsumoto

  • Shingo Takagi, Drilla Moloney & Daiki Nagai defeated El Desperado, Shuji Ishikawa & Shoma Kato

It will be Goto & YOSHI-HASHI vs. Sabre & Oiwa in the semifinals this Wednesday, then OSKAR & Yuto-Ice vs. Tsuji & Kidd on Friday. The winning teams move on to Sunday’s finals to determine the World Tag League 2025 winners.

OSKAR & Yuto Ice are the current IWGP Tag Team Champions. If they don’t win this tournament, the winning team will earn a shot at their titles.
