After Alicia Fox was pulled from the tournament due to injury, Goldust will be teaming with Mandy Rose in Mixed Match Challenge.
That announcement was made towards the end of last night’s episode. Goldust & Rose will be taking on Jimmy Uso & Naomi next Tuesday, and the winning team will go on to face Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss in week eight of the tournament.
Strowman & Bliss defeated Sami Zayn & Becky Lynch this week when Bliss jumped off Strowman’s shoulders and hit Twisted Bliss on Lynch.
WWE announced on Sunday night that Fox wouldn’t be competing in either the women’s Royal Rumble or Mixed Match Challenge because of an injury, which was revealed to be a broken tailbone.
Finn Balor & Sasha Banks, The Miz & Asuka, and Strowman & Bliss are the teams that have advanced in Mixed Match Challenge thus far. Goldust & Rose vs. Uso & Naomi, Elias & Bayley vs. Rusev & Lana, and Apollo Crews & Nia Jax vs. Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair are the remaining first round matchups.
Kurt Angle made the announcement on Twitter: “Due to injury, @AliciaFoxy will be unable to compete in tonight’s #RoyalRumble match. Moving forward, she will not compete in the #WWEMMC & @Goldust will select a new partner.”
WWE.com noted that the injury is a broken tailbone (also known as a coccygeal fracture).
Fox & Goldust were scheduled to face Naomi & Jimmy Uso on the fourth week of Mixed Match Challenge. Another member of the Raw women’s division should be replacing her on the episode, which will take place on February 6th.
Fox was one of the 18 entrants who had been announced in advance for the women’s Royal Rumble. That number represented everyone on the main roster who was currently active (aside from the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champions).
Mixed Match Challenge tournament kicked off as the series debuted on Facebook Watch.
In the first tournament match, Sasha Banks & Finn Balor teamed up to defeat Shinsuke Nakamura & Natalya on a show from Laredo, Texas. Banks & Balor in the next round face the winners of Asuka & The Miz vs. Carmella & Big E.
Mixed Match Challenge will run for 12 weeks and each episode is scheduled to be 20 minutes long. Raw and SmackDown teams will be matched up in the first round, and a second chance fan vote can save one team by allowing them to re-enter in the semifinals.
The winning team will earn $100,000 for the charity that they’re representing, and each team’s charity will receive $10,000. Banks & Balor are supporting the Special Olympics and Natalya & Nakamura are supporting the Make-a-Wish foundation.
Renee Young and Byron Saxton welcomed viewers to the show as the hosts at ringside. They also closed the show with a wrap-around segement previewing next week.
The commentary team was a three-person booth that included Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Beth Phoenix.
Several promos from social media preceded the match on a show that featured some different production elements than other WWE programming. Along with differing graphics and a faster pace, a constant element on the show was the integration with social media.
More so than they already do on other shows, viewers were encouraged to interact on social media while watching. Likewise, many of the promos used during the show were shot using camera phones and posted on social media platforms.
The build-up to the show also featured wacky candid skits in lead-up to the debut episode. In one Facebook skit, Nattie for luck gave Shinsuke one of her father’s ring jackets. As it turned out, Nattie probably need the luck more since she would eventually tap out in the match.
A lot of Finn and Sasha’s skits leading up to their match featured them doing the too sweet hand gesture as they boasted with confidence.
Finn Balor & Sasha Banks defeated Shinsuke Nakamura & Natalya
Sasha and Nattie started the match but quickly tagged out to let Shinsuke and Finn grapple. They wrestled to a stalemate before tagging out.
The match turned into a fight as Nattie and Sasha picked up the intensity with more of a heel/babyface dynamic than their partners.
Overwhelmed, Nattie took a powder to talk strategy with Shinsuke. Sasha went for a dive through the ropes to the floor, but Shinsuke caught her. He then gently placed sat her on the apron. Shinsuke did his signature hand gesture before he ducked when Sasha jumped off the apron with plancha on Nattie.
Back in the ring, Nattie gained an advantage to start working over Sasha.
Meanwhile, Sami Zayn and Becky Lynch watched on from backstage while also interacting in a “chatroom” on social media.
Balor ran wild after a hot tag for a near fall on Nakamura.
Shinsuke himself soon fired up, but got caught slipping by Finn. Balor went his finisher, but Nattie made the save by tripping him up on the top rope.
Sasha dived into the ring to make the save as Shinsuke had Finn covered. A melee began.
Shinsuke went for his finisher, but Finn posted him.
Finn and Sasha did the too sweet hand gesture before stereo dropkicks.
For the finish, Sasha hit a backstabber and transitioned into a submission. Sasha proceeded to submit Nattie with the Banks Statement.
Promos from next week’s opponents closed the show.
On week two of the Mixed Match Challenge, Carmella & Big E meet Miz & Asuka in another first round matchup.
Teams from Raw and SmackDown will face off against each other in the first round. It will begin with Finn Balor & Sasha Banks taking on Shinsuke Nakamura & Natalya, with one match scheduled for each episode. There will also be a “second chance fan vote” during week 11 where an eliminated team will get to re-enter the tournament during the semifinals.
Mixed Match Challenge debuts on Facebook Watch at 10 p.m. Eastern time next Tuesday. Each episode will be 20 minutes long, and Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Beth Phoenix will be on commentary for the series.
Here’s the bracket for the tournament:
Finn Balor & Sasha Banks vs. Shinsuke Nakamura & Natalya (week one)
The Miz & Asuka vs. Big E & Carmella (week two)
Winning teams face each other in week seven
Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss vs. Sami Zayn & Becky Lynch (week three)
Goldust & Alicia Fox vs. Jimmy Uso & Naomi (week four)
Winning teams face each other in week eight
Elias & Bayley vs. Rusev & Lana (week five)
Apollo Crews & Nia Jax vs. Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair (week six)
Winning teams face each other in week nine
The two semifinals will take place in weeks 10 and 11 before the tournament concludes on the twelfth week.
The list of teams for WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge is officially set.
Big E won a fan vote over his New Day stablemates and will be teaming with Carmella in the tournament. WWE noted that Big E received 47 percent of the vote over Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.
There was a dark match before SmackDown last night where Jimmy Uso & Naomi faced Baron Corbin & Tamina (who aren’t in Mixed Match Challenge). The match wasn’t part of the tournament and was a run-through ahead of the series’ debut. Beth Phoenix, who will be calling the show alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves, was at SmackDown last night.
Mixed Match Challenge premieres on Facebook Watch at 10 p.m. Eastern time next Tuesday. It will be a 12-week series with 20-minute episodes and will feature a single-elimination mixed tag team tournament. Here’s the finalized list of teams:
The list of teams for WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge is now pretty much set.
WWE announced two more teams from SmackDown today. Shinsuke Nakamura will be paired with Natalya in the tournament, and Sami Zayn will team with Becky Lynch. In their announcement video (where both were excited), Lynch said they’d bring back the good Zayn — but Zayn replied that he’s the same person she’s always known and their team will bring out the best in Lynch.
That leaves Carmella and either Big E, Kofi Kingston, or Xavier Woods as the final pairing. There will be a fan vote to determine which member of The New Day will be wrestling in Mixed Match Challenge.
Elias was revealed as Bayley’s partner earlier in the day after a right foot injury forced Samoa Joe out of the tournament.
Here’s the updated list of teams for the show:
Raw —
Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss
Finn Balor & Sasha Banks
Apollo Crews & Nia Jax
The Miz & Asuka
Goldust & Alicia Fox
Elias & Bayley
SmackDown —
Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair
Rusev & Lana
Jimmy Uso & Naomi
Shinsuke Nakamura & Natalya
Sami Zayn & Becky Lynch
A member of The New Day (to be determined by fan vote) & Carmella
Samoa Joe is out of the upcoming Mixed Match Challenge tournament due to an apparent injury.
WWE started a fan vote last night to decide between Joe, Elias, and Jason Jordan for the final spot on the Raw side. Joe apparently won that vote, but Kurt Angle tweeted today that Elias would be taking Joe’s spot due to injury.
“Thank you all for voting for @itsBayleyWWE partner in #WWEMMC, but due to an injury suffered on #Raw @SamoaJoe is unable to compete,” Angle wrote. “Therefore the runner-up @IAmEliasWWE will be Bayley’s partner. #WWEMMC”
Joe appeared on Raw last night and defeated Rhyno. He did an in-ring interview after the match where he announced himself for the Royal Rumble, saying John Cena will be the first person he eliminates.
In an article on WWE.com, Dr. Chris Amann said Joe felt a pop in the bottom of his right foot during the match against Rhyno. “We took a look and believe he has a plantar fascia rupture, which is a thick tissue rupture under the foot,” Amann said, “We will get an MRI to confirm. Treatment includes a period of immobilization in a boot with crutches and platelet rich plasma injections.”
Elias & Bayley are Raw’s final team in the mixed tag tournament. Three more SmackDown pairings still need to be announced before the series debuts on Facebook Watch next Tuesday.

Another team has been confirmed for WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge.
It was announced today that Asuka would be teaming with The Miz in the single-elimination tournament. Despite Asuka being a face and Miz being a heel, the storyline in the video where the team was revealed was that they were happy to be paired together and vowed to win.
Miz will return to Raw tonight for the first time since November 20th. He lost the Intercontinental Championship to Roman Reigns on that episode and then took time off to film WWE Studios’ “The Marine 6: Close Quarters.”
UPDATED: Goldust & Alicia Fox have also been confirmed as a team for Mixed Match Challenge. The 12-episode series will debut on Facebook Watch on January 16th, and WWE put out a video where Cathy Kelley teaches viewers how they’ll be able to watch the show.

With Enzo Amore not in the tournament, Apollo Crews will be teaming with Nia Jax in WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge.
That pairing was announced today after Kurt Angle tweeted earlier in the week that Amore would have to be replaced. Amore missed Raw last Monday, where he was supposed to defend his Cruiserweight Championship against Cedric Alexander, due to being hospitalized with the flu and wasn’t on 205 Live on Tuesday.
Even though the decision was made to take Amore out of the tournament, Dave Meltzer noted in the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Amore has been cleared to wrestle. The storyline in the video where Jax’s partner was revealed was that she was disappointed to be teaming with Crews and appeared to be annoyed with Titus Worldwide.
After Rusev & Lana were announced yesterday, it was officially confirmed that another married couple would be paired together as Jimmy Uso is set to team with Naomi.
Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss, Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair, and Finn Balor & Sasha Banks have also been announced for the mixed tag team tournament. The 12-episode series premieres on Facebook Watch at 10 p.m. Eastern time on January 16th.

WWE has confirmed two more teams for the Mixed Match Challenge tournament.
It was first announced today that Sasha Banks would be teaming with Finn Balor, with Kurt Angle referring to them as a “dream team.” It was then revealed that Lana and Rusev, who have been kept apart on SmackDown despite being a real-life married couple, would be paired together.
Naomi and Jimmy Uso, who are also married, will be in the tournament but it hasn’t been confirmed if they’ll be a team.
Banks & Balor and Lana & Rusev join Alexa Bliss & Braun Strowman and Charlotte Flair & Bobby Roode as the first four teams to be announced for Mixed Match Challenge, which is a 12-episode series that will debut on Facebook Watch at 10 p.m. Eastern time after SmackDown on January 16th. With its debut less than two weeks away, WWE has started to make some announcements regarding Mixed Match Challenge.
Kurt Angle first tweeted last night that Enzo Amore, who was included on the original list of wrestlers for the show, won’t be taking part in the tournament due to the flu. Amore missed Raw on Monday and his scheduled Cruiserweight title defense against Cedric Alexander after being hospitalized with the illness.
Amore also wasn’t on 205 Live this week. Whether he actually won’t be returning before Mixed Match Challenge begins remains to be seen.
The first pairing for the tournament has also been revealed, with Alexa Bliss set to team with Braun Strowman.
Mixed Match Challenge will premiere on Facebook Watch at 10 p.m. Eastern time on January 16th. The show will air live for 20 minutes after SmackDown on Tuesdays and will last for 12 weeks. It will feature a single-elimination mixed tag team tournament, which will include wrestlers from both Raw and SmackDown.
WWE announced yesterday that Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Beth Phoenix would be the commentary team for Mixed Match Challenge and Renee Young and Byron Saxton would be the hosts for it.

WWE is partnering with Facebook for a 12-episode in-ring series that will debut next month.
It was announced today that WWE Mixed Match Challenge would be airing on Facebook Watch on Tuesday nights over those 12 weeks. The show will premiere on January 16th, with it set to air live in the United States at 10 p.m. Eastern time and run for 20 minutes. That means that it will be taking place after SmackDown on Tuesdays, though WWE didn’t indicate what that will mean for 205 Live while Mixed Match Challenge is going on.
The concept for the show is a single-elimination mixed tag team tournament that will pit Raw against SmackDown, and the winning team will receive $100,000 to support a charity of their choice. WWE is hyping that the series will have interactive elements, including the ability for fans to engage with wrestlers during the show and “have the opportunity to select matchups, match stipulations, and more, on Facebook.”
Fans will be able to vote for the final member of the Raw roster that will be part of Mixed Match Challenge, along with which New Day member will be on the show. Those final additions to the lineup will be revealed on January 4th.
