Matt Riddle wins MLW World Heavyweight Championship

There is a new MLW World Heavyweight Champion.

Matt Riddle defeated Satoshi Kojima to win the title in the main event of MLW Kings of Colosseum 2025 on Saturday night in Dallas. The finish saw Riddle kick out of a brainbuster, hit a fisherman buster, Broton, and the Bro-Stone to pick up the win.

“Matt Riddle has defeated Satoshi Kojima to capture the MLW World Heavyweight Championship in an electrifying showdown at a record-setting sold-out crowd of 2,400 at the NYTEX Sports Centre in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex,” wrote MLW.com.

Following his victory, Riddle was joined in the ring by our own “Filthy” Tom Lawlor and the two showed respect to Kojima.

Riddle appeared at a press conference following the show, where it was teased that his first title defense will be a triple-threat match at MLW SuperFight against two former champions, Kojima and Alex Kane.

Lawlor would later say of Saturday’s show, “Tonight’s MLW show may have been the best yet, top to bottom. A great undercard, an insane Gravity Gamble match, a killer match between Demi Wxo and Janai Kai, lucha excellence, and a big main event between Kojima and the Bro. DFW showed up and showed out in a big way tonight!”

Matt Riddle makes TNA debut at Turning Point

Matt Riddle made his surprise debut at Friday’s TNA Turning Point as the mystery partner in a trios match.

Riddle teamed up with Zachary Wentz and KUSHIDA to take on the Hardys & Ace Austin as part of the streaming special. Riddle was filling in for Trey Miguel who was unable to make it due to travel issues — a throwback to when the WWE star was a mentor to Wentz and Wes Lee in their NXT days.

Riddle was not on the winning end of the equation, however, as the Hardys and Austin picked up the victory.

It’s unclear if this was a one-off appearance given the circumstances or if TNA will use Riddle more. As early as February, he said he had talks with the company. He is currently the AAA Cruiserweight Champion and has been making appearances for MLW in addition to working various indies.

Matt Riddle challenging for MLW World title at Kings of Colosseum

Matt Riddle is hoping to start his 2025 with a World Championship victory.

It’s been confirmed that Riddle will challenge Japanese wrestling legend Satoshi Kojima for the MLW World Heavyweight Championship at the promotion’s Kings of Colosseum event on Saturday, January 11. The show is taking place from North Richland Hills, Texas and will air for free on MLW’s YouTube channel.

Riddle got this shot by winning MLW Battle Riot 2024. If he defeats Kojima, this would be Riddle’s first championship reign in MLW. He made it to the finals of a title tournament in 2018 (when MLW returned as a promotion) but lost out to Swerve Strickland.

Kojima has been champion since dethroning Alex Kane this 2024. It’s the second time Kojima has held the title, with his first World Championship reign happening in 2002-2003 during the original incarnation of MLW.

Before Kings of Colosseum, Riddle has a match against Donovan Dijak at Eric Bischoff’s MLW One-Shot event in New York City on Thursday, December 5. Kojima will be defending his MLW World title against CMLL’s Ultimo Guerrero on the TV taping portion of that show.

Matt Riddle doubts he’ll be Goldberg’s final WWE opponent: ‘He doesn’t want to step up’

Matt Riddle is not optimistic that he’ll be Bill Goldberg’s final opponent.

It was announced recently that Goldberg will have his long-sought-after WWE retirement match in 2025. Riddle was asked if he’d like to be a part of it during an appearance on the Barstool Rasslin’ podcast.

“I don’t think he wants to step up to the plate,” Riddle responded.

Riddle was asked if he and Goldberg had “straightened out” their beef, which began after Riddle made public comments calling Goldberg an unsafe worker and also that he could beat him in a real fight.

“Well, me and Bill, we’ve talked. We were actually on a flight from Saudi, we were on a Saudi show, like one of the Crown Jewel events, and we’re flying back. We had some cocktails and had a discussion. I don’t think there’s any bad blood. I think he has more of an understanding of where I was coming from. I definitely have an understanding of where he’s coming from and why he finds what I say disrespectful and things like that. I completely understand; I don’t mean it that way. We’re professional wrestlers. I’m just spitting facts, and I can back it up. This is just what it is.”

“A lot of people in WWE took that as disrespect, but if you fought in UFC and now you’re in WWE, what am I supposed to do, forget my whole career? It’s like, no, I can stretch like 98 percent of people.”

Goldberg believes the frontrunner to be his opponent is World Heavyweight Champion Gunther after the two had an altercation at WWE Bad Blood in Atlanta.

“I think we know who the subject, or the victim probably, the frontrunner right now, we know who it is,” Goldberg said. “But in 2025, Goldberg makes his return in a retirement match. I got a couple of months to get ready. No date, no time,” Goldberg said to the SEC Network last month.

Riddle is coming off having performed for MLW on Saturday at Lucha Apocalypto. He teamed with Satoshi Kojima in a tag match against Minoru Suzuki & Ikuro Kwon of Contra Unit on the TV taping portion of the show.

Riddle’s full appearance on Barstool Sports is available below:

Riddle vs. Dijak set for Eric Bischoff’s MLW One-Shot

The first match has been announced for One-Shot 2024, a show that’s being built around Eric Bischoff’s MLW debut.

Former WWE wrestlers Matt Riddle and Donovan Dijak will face off at the Thursday, December 5 One-Shot event in New York City. Airing live on MLW’s YouTube channel, MLW is billing that Bischoff will serve as executive producer for one night only and will have “total control” of the matchmaking.

Riddle was released by WWE in September 2023, while Dijak departed WWE earlier this year when his contract was not renewed. Both are looking to become World Heavyweight Champion in MLW. The championship is currently held by Satoshi Kojima — and Riddle is owed a future title shot as the winner of MLW Battle Riot 2024. Dijak could also be in line for a title shot if he’s able to defeat Riddle.

Kojima will be in action at One-Shot but an opponent for him has not been revealed yet.

Melrose Ballroom in Queens will be the venue for One-Shot. The YouTube broadcast has a start time of 9 p.m. Eastern.

Matt Riddle vs. Minoru Suzuki announced for MLW TV taping

MLW has announced a new match for its show in Chicago next month.

Minoru Suzuki vs. Matt Riddle is now scheduled for the TV-taping portion of Lucha Apocalypto on November 9 at Cicero Stadium. The match will air at a later date on BeIN Sports.

https://twitter.com/MLW/status/1848384981871071712

This match comes after Riddle made enemies with Suzuki’s Contra Unit at last month’s Fightland event in Atlanta. Following Satoshi Kojima’s title defense against Mads Krule Krugger on the show, Contra attacked the champion, leading to Riddle making the save.

MLW TV Taping lineup for November 9, 2024 —

  • MLW World Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima defends against Bobby Fish
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction match: AKIRA vs. Mads Krule Krugger
  • Minoru Suzuki vs. Matt Riddle

MLW x CMLL Lucha Apocalypto lineup for November 9, 2024 —

Matt Riddle on not wrestling for TNA yet, awkward Tony Khan interaction

In an interview with The Takedown, Matt Riddle explained why he hasn’t showed up in TNA Wrestling yet.

Riddle has competed on the indies, for MLW, in Mexico, and had a brief NJPW stint following his release from WWE in September 2023. He told The Takedown that TNA was also interested in booking him, but Riddle had prior bookings on the dates they wanted. Riddle thinks he’ll probably end up competing for TNA in the future, though he doesn’t know how TNA’s relationship with WWE could affect that.

“When I got released, I started getting bookings. If you pay my rate, I don’t care if you’re a hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere. You pay my rate (and) you talk to me like a human, and I’ll accept your booking. I’m very easy to work with, regardless of what people say. But when it came to TNA, I talked to (Tommy) Dreamer at one point. He sent me a plethora of dates for me to do. I have taken so many dates, and usually, they do tapings over the course of a weekend. There was not one weekend that I wasn’t booked at least one or both of the days they wanted me to be at. TNA hasn’t happened yet, but it’ll probably happen eventually,” Riddle said.

“I think once I said, ‘Hey, I’m booked all these days. Let’s try these months.’ I haven’t heard anything back. I think they want me to work there, but it’s more of a scheduling thing. Also, I think right now, with the current relationship between WWE and TNA, I don’t know if they’re interested in me anymore. They’re already cross-promoting. I think Cody’s doing something with TNA eventually. They got the Rascalz in NXT, Joe Hendry. People are believing in him, finally. They [got] a lot going on.”

This month marks one year since Riddle was released by WWE. He was let go at a time when WWE was making roster cuts after being acquired by Endeavor. His release also came shortly after an incident where he appeared to be drunk at JFK Airport in New York City.

On the subject of AEW, Riddle said he did not want the attention of working for another promotion with so much TV after his WWE release.

“With AEW, I think AEW is a fantastic product,” he said. “I know a lot of the people that work there. I like the company. I like the way they work. I like the people that work there. I think with me, and it’s one of the things I’ve noticed, I’ve been relieved after getting fired from WWE. I felt that because I was on TV, and I’m such a provocative character at times, everything was magnified so much because I was on TV. The stress of working on TV two to three days a week was a lot. I like pressure. I like stress too, but it was a lot.

“The best answer would be to go to AEW, get more money, and work a decent schedule. I didn’t want to work on TV again. I didn’t want the attention for a while. I wanted to step away. I just wanted to do indies.”

Riddle detailed an awkward interaction he had with Tony Khan backstage at NJPW Windy City Riot earlier this year.

“I talked to Tony,” Riddle said. “I don’t know if he likes me. He seemed happy. I wrestled Zack Sabre Jr. in Chicago. He seemed cool about it. I don’t know. When you meet me, I’m very sarcastic. But when I met him, I was like, ‘Oh, you like that match?’

“But I said it a different way, and he looked at me all confused. And I was like, ‘Never mind, dude.’ I just walked away. So that was my experience with that.”

Riddle currently holds the Cruiserweight Championship for Lucha Libre AAA. In MLW, he’s in line for a World Heavyweight Championship shot after winning their Battle Riot match. Satoshi Kojima is the current MLW World Champion.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • While speaking with AMNY, Adam Copeland praised the storytelling in Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page’s feud:
    • It feels like we’re getting more storyline emphasis because dream matches can only happen so often, and how sustainable is it? Story is always sustainable. Good story can last and last and last, and then you can always revisit it. And I look at the Hangman/Swerve story and I’ve just loved watching the slow progression.
  • Copeland – who is out of action right now with a fractured leg – expressed his disappointment at having to miss AEW All In at Wembley Stadium:
    • I was pretty pumped about Wembley, I’ve never performed there. I grew up watching Queen and the Foo Fighters, just like all of these massive concerts, and then just the feel — I was pretty pumped about that. That is one that I loved watching, but it was also difficult at times to watch. Arthur Ashe I have never performed there either so I am missing out on that one too. But more than anything, I just want to get back and contribute.
  • AEW referee Bryce Remsburg shared that he and Mark Henry had a “mature, considerate discussion” after Henry was critical of a refereeing moment from Remsburg in Bryan Danielson vs. Jack Perry:
    • Good morning! @TheMarkHenry called me this morning and we had a mature, considerate discussion. We understand each other’s perspective better.
    • I regret the reaction of negativity I helped to create. Support each other and support pro wrestling. Onward! Upward!
  • In an interview with Inside the Ropes (conducted before All In last month and uploaded this week), Bryan Danielson was asked if he’s sad that he never got to face CM Punk in AEW:
    • Sad isn’t the right word — like, it was something that I thought was going to happen that didn’t happen, right? It would have been really cool and really fun for me.
  • Chris Jericho filed a trademark for his “Hi Guys” catchphrase on September 10.
  • Jake Lee suffered a right knee injury at today’s NJPW Road to Destruction show.
  • Matt Riddle told The Takedown that he thinks there’s an “extremely high” chance he’ll return to WWE at some point in the future:
    • The chances of me going back, I think they’re extremely high. If CM Punk, who filed a lawsuit against WWE, and then raked them through the mud for a decade, then goes to the competition, I’ll tell you this, if he can do that, everything can be forgiven. I know I wasn’t the easiest to work with at times. I think the door is always open.
    • I think the longer I’m away, the harder I work, and the more I do, the more likely I could come back. But I’ll also say this, if I never go back ever again, and they never talk to me again, I’ll be ok with that.
  • Scott D’Amore tweeted that he’s “stoked” ROH has sanctioned the ROH Women’s World Championship match between Athena and Gisele Shaw that’s happening at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s debut weekend.

MLW books Matt Riddle vs. Tom Lawlor stipulation match

Former UFC fighters Matt Riddle and Tom Lawlor will do battle in a pro wrestling match this weekend.

MLW has announced that Riddle vs. Lawlor will take place on the TV taping portion of the promotion’s Fightland event in Atlanta this Saturday (September 14). It’s a “Vale Tudo rules” match, which MLW hypes as being a no holds barred martial arts-inspired street fight.

“Before MMA was an organized sport, pit fighters would battle in the underground fight world of Brazil in no-rules, no-holds-barred martial arts street fights. They called it Vale Tudo Rules! A dangerous, controversial, and arguably barbaric form of combat sports, Vale Tudo tests the limits of human endurance, skill, and sheer will to survive,” MLW wrote.

“Now MLW brings Vale Tudo to Center Stage in Atlanta, where two of the sport’s most dangerous competitors will collide in a match that harkens back to the true, gritty roots of MMA. Matt Riddle and Tom Lawlor will throw down in a clash that promises to be one of the most unpredictable encounters in MLW history.”

An air date for the match has not been announced. It’s the first one-on-one matchup between Riddle and Lawlor since 2017.

Fightland will include both a live special and TV tapings. The live special is airing for free on MLW’s YouTube channel.

Matt Riddle ‘in a way different place’ 11 months after WWE release

Matt Riddle says he is in “a way different place” now that it’s been nearly a year since his WWE release.

Riddle was let go by the company in September 2023. Since then, he’s wrestled for NJPW, MLW, AAA, The Crash, REVOLVER, and several other promotions.

Riddle was interviewed by the New York Post recently and said that his personal life deteriorated during his WWE run.

“Even though I was making great money, my family life deteriorated, I got divorced and other things and then on top of that just being able to see the kids, then just taking care of responsibilities,” Riddle said. “When I’m flying to a different city or driving to a different city every day and wrestling and memorizing promos and all these things, a lot of other things fell to the side.”

Riddle said in an interview with MuscleManMalcolm earlier this summer that he still speaks with Randy Orton frequently. He says Orton asks him if he’s interested in coming back to WWE but Riddle says that with a kid on his way, it’s not the right time.

“I’m in a way different place,” Riddle continued. “I feel way better. It’s hard to explain because most people think, ‘Oh you’re there, it must be great.’ Professionally my life was awesome. Personally, my life was in shambles. You lose your family. You lose this, that and you’re trying to rebuild anything and you don’t have time to.”

Riddle also addressed having stated publicly that he could beat Roman Reigns in a fight, similar to previous comments he made about Goldberg.

“This isn’t a flex, this is the truth,” Riddle said. “If I didn’t think I could I wouldn’t say it. You don’t hear me saying I can beat up Bobby Lashley, you know maybe on a good day. Or a Brock Lesnar, maybe on a good day.”

However, Riddle says that things between him and Roman Reigns are good.

“I think when he saw how professional I am in the ring and I also explained why things were said and I wasn’t just trying to call you out,” he continued. “I know my place in WWE but when someone tells me to cut a promo on you, I’m gonna cut a promo on you. I think he understood that. Still wasn’t happy about it, but understood. Me and Roman, we’re good.”

Up next for Riddle is a match against Matthew Justice at MLW Summer of the Beasts in New York’s Melrose Ballroom on Thursday.

MLW Summer of the Beasts lineup for Thursday, August 29, 2024 —

  • Opera Cup 2024 quarterfinals: Mistico vs. Atlantis Jr.
  • Opera Cup 2024 quarterfinals: KENTA vs. AKIRA
  • Opera Cup 2024 quarterfinals: Tom Lawlor vs. TJP
  • Opera Cup 2024 quarterfinals: Alex Kane vs. Bad Dude Tito

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Tony Khan spoke to Bleacher Report about how much he enjoys working with CMLL:
    • I really enjoy working with CMLL and I expect we’re going to have a really long, fruitful, positive business relationship. Salvador [Lutteroth III] and the team at CMLL have been great to work with. I’ve dreamed of working with them for years.
    • I’m a really big fan of CMLL. When Salvador and a lot of the lucha libre wrestlers come in, I start talking to them about how, when I was in college, I would watch CMLL every week and I was a big fan of Mistico and so many other great wrestlers like Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy, they were a great trio, and Blue Panther of course.
    • To be able to work with them now and with Mistico, who is an inspiration and one of the greatest stars in wrestling, it’s really cool. The people at CMLL have been great to work with.
  • Khan also discussed AEW’s partnerships with Stardom and NJPW:
    • The folks at Stardom have come in and been a great partnership. I think it’s the kind of partnership I’ve wanted to have with them for a long time. And with the changes in management, we’ve been able to do that.
    • Under president [Hiroshi] Tanahashi at New Japan Pro-Wrestling, that relationship has only gotten stronger and better. And I believe this could be the best Forbidden Door yet, which is really saying something.
  • Kyle Fletcher is defending his ROH TV title against Atlantis Jr. at CMLL’s Arena Mexico show next Friday.
  • While appearing on Fox 5 in New York, MJF expressed how much he believes in AEW:
    • Look, it was a very easy decision [to stay with AEW] for me – mainly because Tony Khan is paying me an exorbitant amount of money. But outside of that, I also believe in AEW, I believe that it’s where the best wrestle. I believe that we have some of the most top-tier elite talent you get to see in the world today.
  • Jim Ross wishes CM Punk was still in AEW and thinks it’s unfortunate that things didn’t work out:
    • I get text messages from him on a somewhat frequent basis because he’s just checking on me to see how I’m feeling. He likes me and he respects me, and it’s reciprocal … I miss CM Punk. I thought he contributed greatly to the AEW roster when he was with us. To be perfectly candid, I wish he still was. How do you not want a talent the level of CM Punk not still with your company? It, personality-wise, just did not work out, and that’s unfortunate.
  • Ian Riccaboni was the guest on AEW Unrestricted this week.
  • In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Josh Barnett named Katsuyori Shibata, Goldberg, Shayna Baszler, and Boltin Oleg as people he’d like to see compete at future Bloodsport Japan events.

But guys… yeah what we did was special…. But what Jacob does every time he steps in the ring is special. The world about to learn”
  • Matt Riddle is in Mexico City for Lucha Libre AAA’s TV taping today. Last weekend, Riddle missed his indie bookings after announcing that he suffered a concussion when his Uber got in an accident on the way to the airport.

Matt Riddle to miss weekend indie matches after Uber accident

Matt Riddle won’t be able to compete in his scheduled indie matches this weekend.

Riddle was supposed to be in action for Northeast Wrestling in Connecticut on Friday and for North Shore Pro Wrestling in Quebec on Saturday, but he posted a tweet this afternoon revealing that he won’t be able to make it to either show. Riddle wrote that his Uber got into an accident on the way to the airport. He says he has a concussion and some bumps and bruises from the accident but is going to be ok.

“Just wanted to share with everyone that I won’t be making tonight’s show or tomorrow’s show, unfortunately on my way to the airport my Uber got into an accident and I had to go to the hospital and get checked out,” he wrote. “I have a concussion, bumps and bruises but I’ll be fine #seatbelt”

Riddle vs. Brad Hollister was supposed to take place at Northeast Wrestling’s Over the Top event in Woodbridge, Connecticut tonight. A match between Riddle and Zak Patterson was set for Saturday’s North Shore Pro Wrestling Golden Opportunity show in Quebec City, Canada.

In September 2023, Riddle was released by WWE following an incident that took place at JFK Airport in New York City. His release occurred during a round of roster cuts that were made after WWE was officially acquired by Endeavor.

Riddle recently won MLW Battle Riot VI, earning a future shot at MLW World Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima.

Earlier this year, Riddle had a 40-day reign as NJPW World Television Champion.

Matt Riddle wins MLW Battle Riot VI

Matt Riddle is the winner of the sixth Battle Riot.

Riddle won the battle royal at Saturday’s MLW event in Atlanta. The final four in the match were Riddle, Sami Callihan, Davey Boy Smith Jr., and Timothy Thatcher. The finish had all four men tumble over the top rope. Thatcher and Smith eliminated each other while Riddle held onto the ropes, sending Callihan to the floor. As a result, Riddle has now earned a future MLW World Championship match.

The forty-man battle royal also featured the likes of Minoru Suzuki, Tom Lawlor (who entered three different times), Paul Walter Hauser, Violent J, Earnest “The Cat” Miller, Scotty Riggs, and Mistico.

Riddle has made regular appearances in MLW since being released by WWE last year. He also briefly held the New Japan World Television Championship before losing to Zack Sabre Jr. in April.

Other matches at Battle Riot VI saw MLW World Heavyweight Champion Satoshi Kojima defeat Lawlor to retain the title, Alex Kane defeating AJ Francis in a ritual combat match, and Janai Kai defeating Delmi Exo to retain the MLW Featherweight title.
