NWA Power results: Aldis & Scurll discuss terms for title match

Sean Mooney debuted as an interviewer for the NWA, and his first interview was a big one with Nick Aldis.

Mooney congratulated Aldis on retaining the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship against Flip Gordon, but noted that there is still a lot of tension with Villain Enterprises. Aldis said he wasn’t a man who boasts or brags.

Aldis said Flip is one of the best wrestlers in the world, but he’s only a flop when he’s in the ring with Aldis. Aldis promised that every member of Villain Enterprises will be finding out that Nick Aldis is the greatest Worlds Champion of the modern era.

Aldis said that Marty Scurll wanted nothing to do with him. Mooney pointed out that Scurll showed up for Hard Times and Aldis had him escorted from the building.

Aldis claimed this was fake news, and the crowd chanted “coward” at Aldis. Aldis’ reaction here was incredible. He paused and then continued about how he didn’t want the title match to have outside interference. He said that the NWA knows who is the best, and they might as well call him the marathon man, because he runs the show.

Aldis said he wasn’t a coward. He had a sit-down meeting with Scurll and all of us will know why they call Aldis the dealer when we see it later tonight. My goodness — this was excellent. I am consistently blown away at how great Aldis has been on this show.

Royce Isaacs (w/ May Valentine) defeated Andre Guhn

Sal Rinauro joined the commentary team. They commented on how Isaacs has had a bit of a losing streak lately.

Isaacs immediately went after Guhn and chopped the crap out of him. Isaacs blocked an arm drag, then dropkicked him in the knee. He hit a deadlift fisherman’s suplex on Guhn for a two count.

After a battle back and forth, Isaacs ended up going over to the commentary table and started arguing with Rinauro, who reminded him that he was wrestling a match and should focus. May Valentine pulled Isaacs back to the ring, and he soon hit Hush Money for the pinfall.

Isaacs and May argued a bit, and it seemed that he thought Rinauro was trying to create a rift between him and May.

A video aired of Eddie Kingston being beaten down by The Dawsons at The Pope’s instructions.

Melina, Marti Belle, and new NWA Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa came out. Melina wanted to do all the talking and didn’t let Thunder Rosa speak. The interviewer pointed out that the crowd wanted to hear from Thunder Rosa.

They announced that the rematch between Thunder Rosa and Allysin Kay would happen next week. Thunder Rosa said she was thankful that Melina helped her open the doors, but she was the one fighting. Thunder Rosa said that there isn’t a woman in wrestling that can beat her. She talked about how much it meant to her to win the title, but Melina cut her off and said that they were going to cut the emotional crap.

They are most definitely hinting very strongly at a Thunder Rosa babyface turn here, and I think this is great. The crowd loves her. She’s been a big part of the success of these NWA Power episodes.

**********

Ricky Starks came out and talked about how it’s an honor to carry the NWA Television title. He said how he was proud to carry on the tradition of Terry Funk and many others. Starks said that he wasn’t looking to rewrite the history books, but he wanted to add several pages.

Starks called out Zicky Dice and asked him to come out because he wanted to talk to him man to man. Dice came out just like a 1980s heel — and it was awesome. Dice talked about how he was going to be champion if it wasn’t for the NWA brass bringing in a mutant (Dan Maff).

Dice talked about how he wanted the TV title and how he was dressed as a champ, listing the cost of his clothes. Starks said he was decked head to toe in gold, and everything he was wearing was worth more. Starks challenged him to a match. Dice agreed.

NWA Television Champion Ricky Starks defeated Zicky Dice to retain his title

Starks hit two arm drags and went for a third, but Dice dodged it. That didn’t really work though, as Starks hit a dropkick and sent Dice to the apron. Dice drove Starks’ head into the turnbuckle and then tried to hit a sledge, but Starks hit him in the stomach. As they hit the ropes, Dice hit a clothesline.

During this, Joe Galli introduced us to the Lucky 7 rule — if the champion can defend the championship seven times in a row, the champion will get a title shot at the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. I really liked this. That makes all of these title matches mean just a little bit more as they are aiming to get a NWA World title shot.

Starks hit a slingblade off the ropes and then a dropkick off the middle rope. Starks hit a big punch, but Dice hit a knee to the stomach. Dice went for the Snake, Rattle & Roll, but Starks fought out and hit the Stroke for the pinfall.

This was a very solid match, and I think this 6:05 time limit gimmick has actually let these guys show that they can have a good match in less than five minutes. That was great.

**********

New NWA Tag Team Champions Eli Drake & James Storm came out for an interview with Joe Galli. The fans chanted “Talk to us!” — I love this crowd so much. Galli asked if they had a tag team name, and Drake and Storm said that the only thing they need to be called is the champs.

Aron Stevens and Question Mark came out to challenge them. Stevens had his black belt in Mongrovian karate lengthened so he could also wrap it around his neck like a scarf.

Stevens tried to talk several times, but Storm kept cutting him off with jokes. Drake asked Galli if he could do him a favor, and Galli said “Yeah” after some encouragement. Drake asked Galli if these two were really asking for a Tag Team title shot. He asked Galli to pass along a message for him, saying that they could take a number.

Drake and Storm went and sat in the crowd, and Stevens talked about how he was going to go after them and they would have a karate party because he has the longest third-degree black belt in the world. As he was saying this, Trevor Murdoch came out and said that Stevens was running from Scott Steiner at Hard Times.

Murdoch said he had a question for the NWA bosses and they gave him the answer he wanted. He told Stevens that he had a National title defense next week. Stevens asked who the title shot was against — and Murdoch told him it was against him. At this point, Question Mark hit the Mongrovian Spike on Murdoch and left him laying as Stevens taunted him.

We saw Scurll waiting for Aldis to come and meet with him. Aldis came in late, sat down, and said he really tried to turn the other cheek with Scurll. Aldis talked about how he has went above and beyond for the NWA, and how he has always done his best to protect the house. He talked about how him and Scurll were friends since they were teenagers.

Aldis said there are so many people around the world who are jerks behind the scenes, but he thought Scurll wasn’t one of them. He said he was always there for Scurll and always answered the phone — no matter what time — to offer advice, help, and encouragement. Then Scurll challenged Aldis for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship last year.

Aldis didn’t take it personally, because he did believe that Scurll deserved it. They went to war in the ring, bled everywhere, and Aldis shook his hand afterwards. Aldis said that last year’s Crockett Cup was the final notch that Scurll needed to land a life changing deal that rocketed him to the top.

Scurll said that it wasn’t about his deal. He had to live with every fan telling him forever that he should have won the ROH title at Madison Square Garden and how he should have defeated Aldis for the NWA title at the Crockett Cup.

Scurll said it wasn’t about money or big deals — he has never been World Champion, while Aldis was World Champion in TNA and all over the world as NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. Scurll said that he came so close to beating Aldis, and that he knew he could beat him.

Scurll said that Aldis couldn’t have been satisfied with the win, but Aldis said that he made Scurll tap. Scurll insisted that he wanted this match so badly that he would even do it for free, as Aldis can take his portion of the purse. Scurll only wanted one more chance at the title. Aldis agreed, but told him that he made the terms.

Aldis said that at the Crockett Cup, one year removed from their last match, he would give Scurll a title shot. Aldis said that he has a term though — if Scurll does not defeat him at the Crockett Cup for the title, Scurll would need to write a check for all the fans in attendance to refund them for every dollar spent if he doesn’t win. Aldis then got up and left.

This was one of the best segments I’ve seen on this show yet, with real emotion between Aldis and Scurll. Aldis was almost in tears describing their friendship, and Scurll’s desire to win the World Championship, a title he has never held, was 100 percent believable.

I absolutely adored this episode of NWA Power, as it is again proving to be one of the best wrestling shows of the week. Aldis had two killer promos this week, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Scurll to appear at NWA Hard Times PPV, three title matches added

Marty Scurll will be playing a part in the NWA’s Hard Times pay-per-view this Friday.

After NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis retained his title against Ricky Morton in the main event of tonight’s episode of NWA Power, it was announced that Scurll will be appearing at Hard Times. Aldis is facing Scurll’s Villain Enterprises stablemate Flip Gordon in a non-title match at the PPV.

Last month’s Into the Fire PPV ended with Scurll making a surprise appearance and confronting Aldis. Aldis and Strictly Business’ feud with Scurll and Villain Enterprises then continued at ROH’s Saturday Night at Center Stage and Honor Reigns Supreme shows earlier this month.

The NWA has also added three title matches to the card for Hard Times and announced the final participants for their TV title tournament.

NWA Women’s Champion Allysin Kay will defend her title against Thunder Rosa, NWA Tag Team Champions The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express will defend their titles against The Wild Cards and James Storm & Eli Drake in a triple threat match, and NWA National Champion Aron Stevens will defend his title against Scott Steiner.

Matt Cross and ROH’s Dan Maff have been confirmed for the last two spots in the TV title tournament. Cross will face Ricky Starks in the first round, while Maff will face Zicky Dice.

Hard Times is taking place at GPB Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday and will be available via Fite TV. GPB Studios will also host NWA Power tapings on Saturday and Sunday.

Here’s the updated card for Hard Times:

  • Non-title match: NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis vs. Flip Gordon

Scurll & PCO vs. Aldis & Rush to headline ROH Free Enterprise

Marty Scurll and NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis will face off in a tag match at ROH’s Free Enterprise event.

ROH has announced that Villain Enterprises (Scurll & ROH World Champion PCO) will face Aldis & Rush in the main event of Free Enterprise. The show is taking place at the UMBC Event Center in Baltimore on the afternoon of Sunday, February 9 and is free to attend.

After he was confronted by Scurll at the NWA’s Into the Fire pay-per-view last month, Aldis appeared at ROH’s Saturday Night at Center Stage and Honor Reigns Supreme shows last weekend and continued his feud with Scurll and Villain Enterprises.

An inter-promotional match between Aldis and Villain Enterprises member Flip Gordon is set for the NWA’s Hard Times PPV on Friday, January 24.

It was announced yesterday that Scurll will appear at the NWA’s television tapings in Atlanta on January 26. The NWA posted a video this morning with Aldis responding to that announcement by revealing that he’ll be at Free Enterprise. He sent a call of action to NWA fans to come to the show and wear their NWA colors.

ROH’s Kevin Eck wrote that — in storyline — “The tag match at Free Enterprise was put together by ROH matchmakers without consulting the participants, and the word is that RUSH isn’t pleased about having to team with anyone other than his teammates in La Faccion Ingobernable — his brother Dragon Lee and Kenny King. RUSH and PCO clearly have unfinished business. After PCO won the ROH World Title from RUSH at Final Battle on Dec. 13, their championship rematch at Saturday Night at Center Stage in Atlanta on Jan. 11 ended in chaos.”

Marty Scurll announced for January 26 NWA Power tapings

Marty Scurll has been announced for one night of the NWA’s post-Hard Times television tapings.

The NWA announced today that Scurll will appear in front of the crowd at their Power tapings in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, January 26. The show starts at 3 p.m. Eastern time.

GPB Studios is hosting the NWA’s Hard Times pay-per-view on January 24 and Power tapings on January 25 and January 26.

An inter-promotional match between Nick Aldis and Villain Enterprises’ Flip Gordon is set for Hard Times.

After Scurll confronted Aldis at the NWA’s Into the Fire PPV last month, Aldis was involved in angles at both of ROH’s shows this past weekend. He attacked Gordon at Saturday Night at Center Stage before taunting Scurll and Brody King.

The next night, Aldis, Kamille, and Thomas Latimer showed up at Honor Reigns Supreme. Gordon and King tried to get into it with Aldis and Latimer before security broke things up.

It was confirmed this week that Scurll has re-signed with ROH and joined their booking team.

Marty Scurll re-signs with ROH, joins booking team

This story was updated at 9 PM Eastern.

Marty Scurll has re-signed with Ring of Honor and is also joining the booking team, first reported by PWInsider’s Mike Johnson and confirmed by our Dave Meltzer.

Meltzer added it’s the most lucrative deal in company history.

Scurll’s ROH deal expired in November, but he continued to work dates for the company as the two sides worked toward a new contract. Johnson couldn’t confirm the number of years on the contract, but it’s thought to be multiple.

One of the more surprising aspects is the 31-year-old joining the booking team alongside Hunter “Delirious” Johnson, effective immediately. Mike Johnson reported that Scurll was heavily involved in the creative for both of the company’s shows this past weekend and that the upcoming free February 9th show in Baltimore was his idea. Delirous will remain with the company.

Scurll will still able to work for the NWA where he’s involved in an angle with world champion Nick Aldis that was part of ROH’s Saturday event. They run Sunday in Concord, NC.

NWA Hard Times sells out in three hours

On a popular day for pay-per-view onsales, the NWA’s second PPV sold out in three hours Friday with VIP tickets selling out in just three minutes.

Hard Times is scheduled for Friday, January 24th at the GPB Studios in Atlanta, GA, and will be available on Fite.tv. December’s Into The Fire ppv, their first in this latest relaunch of the company, also sold out in three hours.

Tickets are on sale for two more TV tapings on the subsequent Saturday and Sunday at the same venue which the company expects to sell out.

While no matches have been announced for Hard Times, they will hold a 12-man tournament for the revived TV championship with NWA World champion Nick Aldis, Ricky Starks, Caleb Konley, Colt Cabana, Zicky Dice, Trevor Murdoch, Question Mark, Eddie Kingston, Tim Storm, Dave Dawson, Zane Dawson, and Tom Latimer all vying for the belt.

It’s also expected Marty Scurll will be on the show as he made a surprise appearance at Into The Fire.

VIDEO: NWA Power episode 10 – ‘The Villain Effect’

The second season of NWA Power debuts at 6:05 p.m. Eastern time tonight:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpU_VzomKkk

The show will follow up on this past weekend’s Into the Fire pay-per-view and Marty Scurll’s appearance at the end of the show. Scurll confronted NWA Worlds Champion Nick Aldis after he retained his title against James Storm at the PPV. Tonight, two interviews with Scurll will air.

After announcing the return of their Television title at Into the Fire, the wrestlers who will be vying for the championship will be revealed tonight. There will also be a play-in match.

Eli Drake defeated Ken Anderson in their match at Into the Fire but was attacked by Anderson in an angle later in the show. That leads to a no disqualification match between the two tonight.

The NWA is also advertising that Tag Team Champions The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express will be in action and that Thunder Rosa, Melina, The Dawsons, The Wild Cards, and more will appear.

Marty Scurll appears at NWA Into the Fire, confronts Nick Aldis

Marty Scurll appeared at tonight’s NWA Into the Fire PPV.

He appeared at the end of the show, confronting NWA World champion Nick Aldis after he successfully defended the title against James Storm in a 2 out of 3 falls match. The two had a staredown as the show ended.

The feed came back on a few seconds later as Marty Scurll headed to David Marquez and was about to cut a promo when the feed ended for good. It is likely whatever interview Scurll cut tonight will be on a future episode of NWA Power.

Scurll’s contract with Ring of Honor expired on November 30 and is currently a free agent. It’s not currently clear if he intends to re-sign with the promotion, but did appear at their Final Battle event last night, losing in a tag team match with Flip Gordon against Flamita and Bandido.

Scurll has appeared for the NWA before, wrestling Aldis for the NWA World title at the NWA Crockett Cup back in April.

Scurll & Gordon vs. Bandido & Flamita set for ROH Final Battle

ROH has officially confirmed Marty Scurll’s match for Final Battle.

It will be Villain Enterprises (Scurll & Flip Gordon) vs. Bandido & Flamita at the December 13 pay-per-view. The match was announced via a video that Scurll posted today. Scurll mentioned that there’s a lot of speculation about his whereabouts, then said he’s agreed to wrestle at Final Battle and gets to choose his own match.

Scurll also said that his match will go on first at the PPV.

Dave Meltzer reported on Scurll’s status with ROH in last Friday’s Daily Update: “Marty Scurll will be on the 12/13 Final Battle show even though his contract expires prior to that date. Scurll had agreed while talks were going on, that no matter what, he would work that show. He has not signed a new deal with ROH so when that match is officially announced, don’t take it as meaning he has.”

Final Battle is taking place at the UMBC Event Center in Baltimore, Maryland. It will be headlined by Rush defending his ROH World Championship against Scurll’s Villain Enterprises stablemate PCO.

Here’s the updated card for the PPV:

  • ROH World Champion Rush defending against PCO
  • ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes defending against Jay Lethal & Jonathan Gresham
  • ROH Television Champion Shane Taylor defending against Dragon Lee
  • Mark Haskins (w/ Vicky Haskins) vs. Bully Ray in a street fight
  • Matt Taven vs. Vincent Marseglia
  • Marty Scurll & Flip Gordon vs. Bandido & Flamita

F4W NEWSLETTER: CM Punk joins WWE Backstage Joseph Currier gives his thoughts on CM Punk’s return to the pro wrestling world.

When CM Punk first walked out of the company, no one would have guessed that his return to WWE-related programming would come at nearly midnight on an FS1 studio show.

The possibility became more and more of a reality over the past few months, but — with Punk saying FOX hadn’t followed up on his tryout — it was still a surprise when it happened. At the end of the second official episode of WWE Backstage, Renee Young hyped that it was time for the show to have its first iconic, history-making moment. “Cult of Personality” then hit, with Punk making his way into the studio and stepping into the ring at the center of the set.

“It’s as simple as this: Just when they think they’ve got the answers, I change…the culture,” Punk said, “I’ll see you here next week.”

FOX Sports wasted no time confirming that Punk had officially joined Backstage. They sent out a press release announcing that Punk will be a special contributor and analyst on the show and will make select appearances alongside hosts Renee Young and Booker T.

Backstage is a FOX production, which means that Punk will be working for them rather than WWE. That distinction is obviously really important. Just like Punk appearing at Starrcast didn’t mean that he was going to show up at All Out, this doesn’t guarantee that we’ll see Punk at Survivor Series, WrestleMania, or that he’ll ever wrestle another match again. It’s been almost six years since Punk wrestled. He’s 41 years old now, has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and has never sounded passionate about returning to the ring since he’s been gone.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

A few quick updates regarding the Jim Cornette situation. Cornette gave his explanation of the issues in place regarding the line on the NWA show that aired Tuesday here on his podcast.

The gist is that he meant nothing racial, noted that nobody said a word about it when he said it at first or in the period since he said it. He did apologize to those offended but felt many were out to get him and he wouldn’t apologize to them. He explained how this led to his departure for the NWA and did admit to hanging the phone up on David Lagana when Lagana asked him to apologize publicly.  If you’re interested, you should listen. He did try and blame the issue on AEW fans who were mad that he insulted their cosplay wrestlers, which, while correct in some instances as far as his enemies list goes, that was a real bad take on the subject. To label this as AEW fans out to get him misses the entire point.

While he didn’t say this, what went down is that the NWA did want to keep him, although it was tough. They had edited lines out he said before, and were mad that a different line no last week’s show got through after the fact, but that didn’t end up causing serious controversy.  They had edited out others as well, but perhaps only one other person. They did want him to take a temporary hiatus from the product, and with that suggestion, he quit. They wanted him to apologize and he wanted to address it on his podcast instead today, or even on the 12/14 PPV show with the idea of bringing attention to that show. They felt the apology had to be immediate. When he wouldn’t do that, it led to Cornette quitting. There were other issues involved as well but that was the key part of things.

Newsweek had a major ROH story talking with Kelly Klein, B.J. Whitmer and Adam Birch. The story talked about claims of improper care of injured talent in ROH, which ROH denied. They went into Klein’s contract situation. In actuality, Klein was offered a $50,000 a year deal for next year, not $24,000, but ROH pulled out of it. The article went after Greg Gilleland hard, as well as Joe Koff and Sinclair. It was mostly about the safety issue but it was clear they were strongly after Gilleland, such as inadvertently letting Maria Manic’s contract expire and her getting a WWE tryout, although she has since signed.

Marty Scurll will be on the 12/13 Final Battle show even though his contract expires prior to that date. Scurll had agreed while talks were going on, that no matter what, he would work that show. He has not signed a new deal with ROH so when that match is officially announced, don’t take it as meaning he has.

The former Oney Lorcan, who has asked for his release from WWE and not had it granted, responded to Paul Levesque saying that going public with these things isn’t the mature, professional way to do it and that talent should talk to the company, saying, “The mature professional thing to say would be no comment and have a private conversation to independent contractor instead of burying talent publicly to the media. That’s how I do business. It’s all about the game and how you play it.”

ROH Glory By Honor results: Final Battle tournament semifinals & finals

ROH’s Glory By Honor event streamed live on Honor Club this Saturday night. Ian Riccaboni, Caprice Coleman and Colt Cabana were tonight’s main announce team. There looked to be a few hundred people in attendance for tonight’s show but there were a lot of empty seats in the bleachers and scattered around ringside.

Silas Young won a battle royal and advanced to challenge ROH World Champion Rush later in the show

Participants: The Bouncers, Kenny King, Joe Hendry, Rhett Titus, Big Daddy Yum Yum (CMLL), Coast 2 Coast, Cheeseburger, Brian Johnston, Josh Woods, Silas Young

Kenny King hid under the ring from the start, like he did at G1 Supercard. Beer City Bruiser did his “I can’t bite — I ain’t got no teeth spot.” Young eliminated Titus, who decided to pull Kenny King from out under the ring and into the match. He was quickly eliminated by Joe Hendry, who was a focal point of this match early on and was one of the only wrestlers who got a full introduction on the Honor Club stream.

Coast 2 Coast (Shaheem Ali & LSG) eliminated Bruiser, Brawler Milonas  later threw out Coast 2 Coast at the same time, which got a loud “BEER” chant going in the crowd. Milonas and Big Daddy Yum Yum had a quick exchange together before Milonas dumped him to the floor, too. I enjoyed hearing the distinguished Ian Riccaboni say “Big Daddy Yum Yum” in these short moments.

The final three in this were Josh Woods, Silas Young and Brawler Milonas. The former two teamed up to eliminate Milonas, and a few seconds later, Young, Woods’ storyline mentor, offered Woods a hug, then eliminated his mentee. Silas Young will now face ROH World Heavyweight champion Rush later on in the evening for a shot at the title.

PCO defeated Dalton Castle in a Final Battle number one contender’s tournament semifinal match

Good brawl. A fan in the front row wore a homemade version of Castle’s ring gear and took a selfie with Castle during his entrance. PCO came out to his new Jim Johnston-composed theme music and in more makeup than usual, extra thick black eyeliner under his eyes his black darkwave jacket again. There was lots of smoke around the ring when the lights came back up, and Castle acted like he was afraid of getting in the ring to wrestle the match with PCO.

Early on, PCO demanded Castle hit him in the back. “If you wanna hit me, hit me!” he said, no-selling some forearm strikes. After this, and once the two really started mixing it up, it turned into a good brawl. The crowd was way into PCO but there was a group in house that was loudly pro-Castle.

They fought on the outside for a bit. Castle belly-to-belly suplex PCO on the floor. He threw PCO around a ton, actually, like he literally dumped PCO out onto the floor from a bodyslam, like he was in the battle royal earlier. He hip-tossed PCO onto concrete, the mats had been pulled up, PCO still in his awesome jacket, and when he finally did get up, Castle gave him a spinebuster onto an unfolded chair.

PCO finally stood up at the count of 16, back in the ring at 19. Castle was there waiting for him with a DDT and a running knee, but PCO was back up, “revived,” and then clotheslined Castle and himself to the floor, and followed that up with a tope con giro through the ropes. He’s 52. After some more back and forth, PCO used a big moonsault to put Castle away. The crowd was crazy for PCO throughout this.

Marty Scurll defeated Jay Lethal in a Final Battle number one contender’s tournament semifinal match

Very good match, all action and good drama in the last few minutes. They shook hands before the bell. Scurll dashed at Lethal, who caught Scurll with a dropkick. They started flying from here, back and forth both in and out of the ring. It was all Lethal for a while until Scurll, after two failed tries, finally landed his superkick off the apron to Lethal who was, standing on the floor.

This heated up when Scurll went for the chickenwing and had the crowd erupt for it. Lethal blocked and put Scurll into the figure-four, but the match was over when Scurll finally locked in the chickenwing and got Lethal to tap. Again, really good. You could tell in shots during this match that this was a small, small affair tonight, but both Lethal and Scurll went out and did what they could to tear it up. They shook hands again afterwards. Scurll is now scheduled to wrestle his Villain Enterprises stablemate, PCO, later tonight.

ROH Television Champion Shane Taylor defeated J. Spade to retain his title

They showed a promo of Taylor talking about himself on the radio or on the phone putting himself over. They’re doing the TMT Promotions spin-off angle with Taylor. Spade and Taylor used to wrestle each other on the indies, according to Riccaboni.

They had referee Todd Sinclair do a spoken introduction to the match, like they’d do for a Mayweather Promotions bout. Taylor asked if Spade was ready to get knocked out but Spade came out with a flurry of moves and a dive to the floor. The crowd was at times quite loud behind Spade in this one. Taylor used a nice spinning Greetings From 216 (Fire-Thunder driver) to put Spade away.

Kelly Klein defeated Angelina Love to win the Women of Honor World Championship

Klein stormed at Love at the bell and went on to beat the crap out of love for about a minute straight. Klein used a Northern Lights suplex for the first near-fall of the match. Love countered with a jawbreaker, and later landed a Thesz Press off the apron to the floor.

Klein powered out of Love’s anaconda clutch midway through this and started ragdolling her around the ring with suplexes and K-Power in her comeback. Love kicked out. These two were really working hard here. Love returned with a Botox Injection kick and plancha from the top rope to the floor. Mandy Leon assured Love that she was still pretty. Klein came in at the count of 19. Love missed another Botox Injection, and when Klein went for another K-Power, she accidentally knocked the referee out. People immediately started to boo, even before Mandy Leon entered the ring and started dancing with a chair.

The lights went out and Maria Manic came out and put Leon in a torture rack, then did the same to Love. Klein got back up, delivered K-Power again and pinned Love to regain the Women of Honor championship.

The referee apparently had zero idea that the lights went out, someone’s entrance music blared, then that said someone got into the ring and beat up a bunch of people. Because he was tapped in the head by someone’s foot. This would have been much better without the schmozz finish, but there probably wasn’t another way of introducing Manic unless it was during this match.

ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) defeated Luke & PJ Hawx to retain their titles

Pretty good. Luke Hawx was Altar Boy Luke in XPW. His son wrestled with him tonight, Riccaboni said he’s 20 years old. They showed a promo Luke Hawx cut before the match and it was good. The crowd was excited for the Hawx family. Luke Hawx wrestled alongside Jay Briscoe in CMLL in the Gran Prix tournament last month in Mexico. He looked good here tonight. I guess PJ Hawx is actually named Perry Hawx, because they started calling him that halfway through this match.

Jay Briscoe beat the hell out of him for much of this. The announce team explained both Hawx have acting experience, and Perry has a new show that’ll be on Hulu soon. Perry came back late in the match with a high angle German suplex, but the Briscoes used Redneck Boogie to Perry out. Jay pinned Perry after a Jaydriller.

Alex Shelley defeated Jonathan Gresham

Excellent match despite the quiet crowd. They were into it when they were supposed to be, but the venue sounded empty at times. It’s negligible, though, because this was one of the best technical matches I’ve seen this year. If mat wrestling is in your wheelhouse, go out of your way to watch this. I don’t think there were more than ten big bumps in this. Maybe a top-rope inverted atomic drop was the highest of spots. That is  saying so much considering how long Shelley was away from wrestling, because he looked like he’d never really stopped, especially here.

Shelley pinned Gresham when Gresham went for an octopus hold; Shelley countered it into a clutch pin for the upset victory. Gresham threw a fit afterwards and shoved a staff member out of his chair ringside, grabbed the steel chair and brought it into the ring with the intent of some sort of revenge on Shelley. Jay Lethal came out and took the chair out of Gresham’s hands. He told him that him and Shelley just had one of the greatest matches he’d seen and things looked to be smoothed over in storyline.

They are still teasing a full-on heel turn for Gresham but aren’t pulling the trigger just yet.

LifeBlood (Mark Haskins & Tracy Williams) defeated Villains Enterprises (Brody King & Flip Gordon)

Gordon comes to the ring in a gas mask now and grew a long beard. Everyone in the match is great, but Mark Haskins is unique, maybe someone ROH could bet the house on, that’s how good he is with the right people. Him and Gordon looked especially good together. Haskins and Williams did a cool double dive to the floor, Williams from the corner and Haskins through the ropes.

When Gordon tried using a kendo stick, he accidentally hit his partner, King, and Williams hit a piledriver for the pin on Gordon. Really good match. Bully Ray came out and beat LifeBlood up. Gordon came back into the ring and gave his kendo stick to Bully Ray, despite their differences in the past earlier this year. Ray got tons of heat when he screamed “Do you know who I am?!”

ROH World Champion Rush defeated Silas Young to retain his title

Lanny Poffo joined the commentary team for this match. This wasn’t as special as I think they wanted it to be. It felt like any other Rush match in ROH.

This bout started off fast, and Rush went for the Bull’s Horn running dropkick early on. Young blocked it with a spear and the two were quickly on the floor, Young leading the assault on Rush, smashing him into the ring post.

Young kept control of the match back inside the ring, but Rush returned the attack and again, both were on the floor. Rush roughed Young up for a while and threw him into the barricades. Poffo translated “tranquilo” for us, and it means “tranquil” in English, for those not in the know.

Rush missed a diving senton off the second rope, gave Young an opportunity to hit his finisher, the Plunge moonsault, for two. He used a swinging draping DDT for another nearfall, and Rush began to hulk up. Rush landed a superman punch and the Bull’s Horns for the emphatic victory. Rush kissed the the ROH World title, and Lanny Poffo called Rush vs. Young one of the best matches he’d ever seen in his life. I swear.

After cutting to the announce team, production played a video from Death Before Dishonor: Fallout last month. Someone attacked the Kingdom backstage at the show. Matt Taven and Vinny Marseglia came out and Taven then demanded whomever attacked them to come out and face them. The lights went out and they played footage of Taven and Marseglia before today’s show, doing scandalous activities, like unpacking their gear from an SUV, then unpacking inside the venue. It was an angle to imply that someone is stalking Taven for devious reasons. The Kingdom then stormed off.

PCO defeated Marty Scurll to win the Final Battle number one contender’s tournament

Awesome match, and maybe PCO’s best singles match in ROH to date. Scurll got on the mic and faked offering a truce before the bell, then whacked PCO in the face with an umbrella but only got a two-count. What a villain. Scurll did his version of the Iconoclasm and launched PCO from the top rope with it. Scurll flipped a fan off when he and PCO were brawling on the floor. This match would sometimes peak but would flame out quick because the crowd sounded tired. PCO rallied back with a pop-up power bomb.

Scurll made a comeback himself, snapping PCO’s fingers, which I suppose against a Frankenstein-type character like sounds like a silly thing to do. Later, Scurll press slammed PCO off the top through a table on the floor. This is his second match for the night. Scurll put PCO in the chickenwing but ref Todd Sinclair was knocked out. PCO landed the French-Canadian Slam but Sinclair was out. Brody King came out and gave PCO a bossman slam, apparently at the orders of Scurll. Scurll pinned him for a two-count.

Gordon came out later and kicked Scurll off the ropes, then Scurll hit PCO with the ROH Six-Man title for another two-count. The crowd exploded here with a “he’s not human” champ. PCO finally stuck the PCOsault but for only two. The crowd was peaking here and it was the loudest reaction of the night. It was about 60% PCO 40% Scurll. PCO missed that insane senton spot he often does onto the apron, looked like he died. Scurll hit a massive lariat for two. PCO used his own lariat for two, then landed another moonsault for three. Crazy match.

Afterwards, Scurll grabbed the mic and said for three years, he’d been trying to become ROH champion, and tonight, PCO took that chance away from him, and then congratulated him. Scurll said no one deserves more of a shot at the world title than PCO, who’ll now face Rush at Final Battle in Baltimore for the ROH World Heavyweight title.

Check back at the end of the month for more of our coverage from ROH’s upcoming Honor United tour.

Final thoughts —

This was a good show although it looked to be poorly attended. Great main event. PCO is a machine and won’t stop taking crazy bumps, but the truth is that I can’t say I have seen one ROH show in 2019 where PCO wasn’t wildly cheered. He’s a real star. Both he and Scurll were not only awesome once tonight, but twice. Jonathan Gresham vs. Alex Shelley was top-tier technical wrestling, on par with this year’s Virus vs. Metalico in CMLL or most of Zack Sabre’s work throughout the year.

Jay Lethal vs. Marty Scurll was also a match worthy of mention tonight. There were definite misfires, though, like the battle royal, which at least served a purpose and was quick, and the Women of Honor match, which wasn’t bad, but the finish left a sour aftertaste. LifeBlood vs. Villain Enterprises would be of note, as well, but the Bully Ray abusing LifeBlood and then leaving has jumped the shark, and it’s the last thing most fans are left thinking about, unfortunately. Action-wise, though, this was one of ROH’s stronger shows of late.

Semifinals set for ROH number one contender’s tournament

The semifinals of ROH’s number one contender’s tournament are now set.

PCO vs. Dalton Castle and Marty Scurll vs. Jay Lethal are the two semifinal matches for the tournament. The semifinals and finals will both be held at Glory By Honor in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, October 12.

Castle defeated Mark Haskins and Lethal defeated PJ Black in the remaining first-round matches at Saturday’s post-Death Before Dishonor television tapings. Black was replacing Bandido, who ROH announced was unable to wrestle on Saturday due to a knee injury.

Scurll and PCO advanced by winning first-round matches at Death Before Dishonor. Scurll defeated Colt Cabana, while PCO defeated Kenny King in a no disqualification match.

The winner of the tournament will challenge for the ROH World Championship at Final Battle in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, December 13. Rush is the current champion. He’s scheduled to defend his title against Jeff Cobb at ROH’s Honor United show in Bolton, England on Sunday, October 27.

Scurll’s contract with ROH is set to expire this November.
