Jeff Hardy suspended by AEW, can only return after completing treatment

Jeff Hardy has been suspended by AEW in the aftermath of his DUI arrest.

AEW president and CEO Tony Khan issued a statement on Tuesday announcing that Hardy is suspended without pay and can only return to the company after completing treatment and maintaining his sobriety. Khan wrote that Hardy has indicated he’s open to receiving treatment.

“We were able to resume contact with Jeff Hardy this afternoon. AEW does not condone Jeff’s alleged behavior. We’ve made it clear to Jeff that we’ll assist him in getting treatment for substance abuse issues, which he has indicated that he’s open to receiving. In the interim, he is suspended without pay, and he can only return to AEW upon successfully completing treatment and maintaining his sobriety,” Khan’s statement said.

“If you or a loved one needs help, please reach out to SAMHSA’s National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357).”

Hardy was arrested in Volusia County, Florida on Monday and is facing charges of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and violating an interlock restriction.

This is Hardy’s third DUI arrest since 2018.

The Hardys had been scheduled to face Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus and The Young Bucks in a triple threat ladder match for the AEW Tag Team titles on Dynamite this Wednesday.

“It was disheartening to hear the news about my brother yesterday,” Matt Hardy tweeted on Tuesday morning. “Recovery isn’t a linear process & I’ll continue doing whatever I can to help my brother be healthy. Being healthy & well is the most important thing for Jeff, his wife, his children & our family at this time.”

AEW’s Jeff Hardy admits to Fireball shots, upcoming brain scan on arrest video

Footage of Jeff Hardy’s recent arrest has been released.

TMZ was the first to publish the video, which shows three police officers draw their weapons on the AEW wrestler.

An officer can be seen approaching the passenger’s side door of the vehicle and then quickly pointing his firearm towards Hardy in the driver’s seat. A second officer then approaches with his gun drawn as well. A third officer also approaches before Jeff exits the car.

“We got several 911 calls on you,” an officer can be heard saying. “Do you know why we might have gotten some calls?”

“You were all over the road, what’s going on with that?” The officer asked before saying he can’t hear Hardy’s response.

The officer would later say that they got three or four 911 calls reporting Hardy’s driving. Hardy also mentioned that he has a doctor’s appointment upcoming to have a brain scan. Later in the video, he admits to having drank shots of Fireball before getting behind the wheel.

At the end of the video, one of the officers informs Hardy he is under arrest and notes the time is 9:54 a.m. Arrest records from Volusia County show he was booked in at 12:45 later that day.

Matt Hardy comments on Jeff Hardy’s DUI arrest

Following Jeff Hardy’s DUI arrest, Matt Hardy has vowed to continue doing everything he can to help his brother get healthy.

“It was disheartening to hear the news about my brother yesterday,” Matt tweeted on Tuesday. “Recovery isn’t a linear process & I’ll continue doing whatever I can to help my brother be healthy. Being healthy & well is the most important thing for Jeff, his wife, his children & our family at this time.”

Jeff was arrested in Volusia County, Florida early Monday morning on three charges related to driving under the influence. Police state that two breathalyzer tests yielded blood alcohol content readings of .294 and .291, both of which are nearly four times the legal limit.

Jeff is facing charges of DUI, driving with a suspended license, and violating an interlock restriction. The DUI offense is a third-degree felony.

This is Jeff’s third DUI arrest since 2018.

On Monday night, Jeff was bailed out of jail on a $3,500 bond. He was initially scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but that appearance is now listed as canceled.

The Hardys had been set to face Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus and The Young Bucks in a triple threat ladder match for the AEW Tag Team titles on Dynamite this Wednesday. That match is no longer being advertised by AEW.

Dave Meltzer reports that AEW has told Warner Bros. Discovery to “stop all promotion of Jeff Hardy in any commercials or anywhere else immediately.”

AEW Tag Team title ladder match no longer advertised for Dynamite

The ladder match originally scheduled for this Wednesday’s Dynamite is no longer being advertised following Jeff Hardy’s DUI arrest.

AEW advertised the card for Wednesday’s Dynamite on social media today and did not include The Hardys vs. Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus vs. The Young Bucks ladder match. In today’s Daily Update, Dave Meltzer noted that AEW has asked Warner Bros. Discovery to remove all advertising featuring Hardy going forward.

“While AEW has not said anything publicly [Warner Bros. Discovery] was told to stop all promotion of Jeff Hardy in any commercials or anywhere else immediately,” he wrote. “They have stopped promoting the three-way ladder match for Wednesday and not sure if they will have a tag team title match with just the two teams or not.”

Hardy was arrested in Volusia County, Florida on Monday morning and was charged with one count of driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, driving with a canceled/suspended/revoked/ license, and violating restrictions placed on a driver’s license. The police report stated that Hardy seemed “to be in a stupor and confused” and “smelled of alcohol”. Additionally, according to the report, Hardy “could not complete any portion of sobriety exercises successfully or without risk of falling.”

Hardy’s first breath test sample read 0.294, and a second read 0.291, far above Florida’s legal driving limit of .08. Hardy posted bond and was released around 7 pm local time. He is scheduled to appear in front of a judge on June 14 at 1:30 pm.

Monday News Update

  • Bryan and I will be back tonight and we’ve got a ton of topics to talk about including Jeff Hardy, Keiji Muto, Paige, the All Atlantic tournament and politics regarding the Forbidden Door PPV show.
  • The big news today is obviously the arrest of Jeff Hardy at about 12:30 a.m. very late Sunday night. The Highway patrol arrest report, first reported by Marc Raimondi of ESPN, said that Hardy was in a white car seen swerving and running off the roadway. The officers made the stop and said Hardy appeared to be in a stupor and confused. He was unsteady walking and smelled of alcohol, said the report. The report said they learned Hardy had bee drinking and he couldn’t complete any portion of the sobriety tests successfully, or without risk of falling down. His breathalyzer tests registered 0.294 and 0.291, which are about 3.7 times the legal limit, so this was nothing where you could even remotely justify driving and not a close call. Why athletes and repeat offenders don’t get an Uber in these situations is beyond me.
  • While AEW has not said anything publicly WarnerMedia was told to stop all promotion of Jeff Hardy in any commercials or anywhere else immediately. They have stopped promoting the three-way ladder match for Wednesday and not sure if they will have a tag team title match with just the two teams or not. Another question regards the main event of TripleMania on Saturday in Tijuana which was to be the Hardys vs. Dragon Lee & Dralistico. We haven’t heard from anyone there regarding how they will handle that. I don’t know that this is even possible on this date but FTR replacing the Hardys and defending the tag titles against Dragon Lee & Dralistico would make sense. But then we have to open up the can of worms of FTR wrestling at Forbidden Door and also on an AAA show a week apart, because of the New Japan/CMLL relationship.
  • Raw tonight goes against game five of the NBA playoffs, but no NHL game. Smackdown actually did okay, about the same as they’ve been doing against the playoffs, on Friday night. Even though the finals have pulled much larger numbers than the other rounds, they haven’t seemed to hurt wrestling anymore than wrestling has been hurt since mid-April when they started.
  • Raw tonight at the Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita has one of the the lowest advance for a Raw taping since the pandemic. They had a big walk-up today so they will end up slightly above the Chase Center in San Francisco show, but it’ll be in that ballpark. Announced for the show is Kevin Owens vs. Ezekiel, Judgment Day will explain their attack on Edge and Seth Rollins will talk about Cody Rhodes.
  • We are looking for reports from Raw tonight with Main Event matches and any dark matches, as well as from yesterday’s house shows in Albuquerque, NM and Springfield, MO, and any reports from the Cyberfight show yesterday. Send to [email protected]
  • We are also doing polls on UFC 275 from Saturday and New Japan Dominion on Sunday. You can send a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]
  • Holly Holm was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday in Verona, NY. She is only the fifth woman boxer inducted into the Hall of Fame. In a trivia note, Marc Ratner is in both the boxing and UFC Hall of Fame.
  • Thanks to Chris Hendricks for the NXT reports this week.
  • Still advertised for Dynamite on Wednesday is Chris Jericho vs. Ortiz hair vs. hair, Ethan Page vs. Miro in the All Atlantic tournament and Wardlow in a handicap match against 20 security guards. The show is being called Road Rager.
  • A correction from yesterday when talking about FTR weekend matches. The match with Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards that got all the raves was not the match with Bret Hart in their corner. The Bret Hart match was with Brock Anderson & Brian Pillman Jr., managed by Arn Anderson.

WWE

  • Damian Priest was an Ambassador for the Puerto Rican Day parade in New York over the weekend.

AEW

  • For Dark Elevation tonight, Mercedes Martinez & Serena Deeb face Miranda Gordy & Tootie Lynn, Evil Uno & 10 vs. QT Marshall & Aaron Solo and Nyla Rose vs. Max the Impaler.

UFC

  • Taila Santos will be undergoing surgery for a broken orbital bone suffered when she and Valentina Shevchenko clashed heads in round four of their fight Saturday night. She is flying back to Brazil to have surgery rather than have it in Singapore because then she would be unable to fly home after the surgery.
  • Bryan Battle vs. Takashi Sato is scheduled for 8/6.
  • Rani Yahya suffered a neck injury and pulled out of his 7/9 fight with Cody Garbrandt.

Other Notes

  • Tickets for the 7/1 Impact Wrestling Against All Odds PPV show from Center Stage in Atlanta are now on sale. They will also be taping television the next day.

AEW’s Jeff Hardy arrested for DUI

Jeff Hardy has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Arrest records in Volusia County, Florida show that Hardy was booked at 12:45 p.m on Monday, June 13. He has been charged with one count each of driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol (third offense in 10 years), driving with a canceled/suspended/revoked license, and violating restrictions placed on a driver’s license.

Hardy is scheduled to appear in front of a judge on Tuesday, June 14 at 1:30 p.m.

ESPN’s Marc Raimondi added further details obtained from the Florida Highway Patrol arrest report.

“A white car was seen ‘swerving’ and ‘running off’ the roadway Monday around 12:30 a.m. When the officer made a traffic stop and engaged Hardy, the wrestler seemed ‘to be in a stupor and confused,’ per the report,” Raimondi tweeted.

“Once he left his car, Hardy was unsteady and smelled of alcohol, per the report. Officers, through conversation, learned Hardy had been drinking. Hardy could not complete any portion of sobriety exercises successfully ‘or without risk of falling,’ the officer wrote in the report.”

“Officers administered a breath test and Hardy’s first sample read 0.294 of blood-alcohol content. A second sample read 0.291. The legal limit to drive in Florida is .08.”

Hardy was also arrested and charged with driving under the influence on October 3, 2019 in Moore County, North Carolina. He was arrested for public intoxication in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 13, 2019 as well. Hardy served 10 days in jail in 2011 after pleading guilty to charges of possession of a controlled substance and one count of conspiracy to traffic.

Hardy is currently scheduled for a triple threat ladder match on Dynamite this week along with his brother against Jurassic Express and the Young Bucks.

Jeff Hardy was ‘almost knocked out’ early in AEW Double or Nothing match

During the latest episode of his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy explained why his brother Jeff was pulled from this week’s episode of Dynamite.

It was originally announced that The Hardys, Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus & Christian Cage would face Adam Cole, The Young Bucks, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish in a 10-man tag team match on Wednesday’s Double or Nothing fallout edition of Dynamite. But Jeff Hardy and Cole were both pulled from the match and replaced by Darby Allin and Hikuleo respectively.

Matt Hardy said on his podcast that Jeff was “almost knocked out” very early on in The Hardys’ match against The Young Bucks at Double or Nothing on Sunday. That resulted in Jeff being pulled from Dynamite.

“Yeah, I was happy with the match [Hardys vs. Young Bucks], especially considering very early on in the match Jeff was almost knocked out,” Matt said. “So he got hurt pretty bad. That’s why he’s being pulled from the match in Los Angeles, obviously. So he was kind of running on fumes going through the match. So he still held up his end of the bargain pretty good in the big scheme of things.”

Matt said that — after the point where Jeff was almost knocked out — Jeff has no recollection of The Hardys’ match at Double or Nothing.

“We have a couple of ideas, but we’re not sure [where Jeff got hurt]. He has no recollection. Like he doesn’t remember the match at all after that happened. So thank god The Young Bucks are The Young Bucks and I’m me,” Matt said. “He was literally just a vessel being given directions throughout this match to kind of do what he was supposed to do. So considering he really got knocked loopy terribly at some point earlier in the match, he still did pretty good to go through and do everything he did. It’s so funny that he’s just still such a great athlete and so good at what he does. If you look at the Swanton he does on the stairs, he still does it like perfectly. And he didn’t realize he was supposed to do it until he was told he was supposed to do it.”

The Hardys defeated The Young Bucks in their match at Double or Nothing. It was the first time the two teams have faced off in AEW.

The Young Bucks, O’Reilly, Fish & Hikuleo were victorious in the 10-man tag match on Dynamite. Cole was on commentary for the bout.

Hardy and Cole will now meet next week on Dynamite in the semifinals. The show ended with the Undisputed Elite (Cole, reDRagon, and The Young Bucks) coming to the ring for a staredown with the Hardys, Sting, and Darby Allin.

The winner of next week’s semifinal match will advance to the finals of the Owen Hart Foundation tournament, which takes place on May 29 at Double or Nothing.

Brackets revealed during the show has  Cole facing Harwood, Fenix vs. O’Reilly, Hardy vs. Allin, and Joe vs. a mystery “joker” opponent.
