WWE Mixed Match Challenge live results: Elias-Bayley vs. Rusev-Lana

Happy Rusev Day on the fifth week of Mixed Match Challenge as the team of Lana & Rusev advanced in the tournament.

Rusev & Lana will wrestle again on week nine against either Bobby Roode & Charlotte Flair or Apollo Crews & Nia Jax. Next week is the last first round match before the quarterfinals in two weeks time.

Rusev & Lana became the second married couple to move on into the next round of the tournament. Jimmy Uso & Naomi were the first husband-and-wife duo to advance when they won their match last week.

On commentary, Michael Cole claimed the win by Lana was her first in-ring victory in WWE. She certainly celebrated like it was a monumental win. The post-match celebration looked as if someone medaled in an Olympic event. Much like the Olympics, there was also an opening ceremony with music and ballyhoo.

The show opened with a concert by Bayley & Elias. They strummed their guitars as the announcers ran through their opening notes.

Screenshots showed highlights of the angle from Raw last night where Braun Strowman attacked Elias with what Michael Cole called a bass guitar. Others have called it a cello. Regardless, it is now in pieces. Selling the attack, Elias had his ribs bandaged.

After an instrumental intro, Elias & Bayley paused their strumming as they introduced themselves to the audience. They each were only able to say hello before the entrance of Rusev interrupted them.

Rusev waited so his wife Lana could join him on the stage. They wore matching gear and looked cute as a basket full of puppies. Video clips showed Rusev helping to train Lana for the tournament by having her break wooden boards and shout “Lana is number one!”

Lana & Rusev defeated Bayley & Elias

Lana pinned Bayley for the married couple to advance in the tournament. Much like other matches in the tournament, there was plenty of gaga. The story of the match revolved around Lana’s quest for victory.

The match began with Rusev leading a chant proclaiming Lana is the best and she is number one. Overconfident, Lana proceeded to beg off when Bayley started out-wrestling her on the mat. Rusev gave Lana some advice, and she hulked up. Moments later, she found herself backpedling again.

Taking a powder on the outside, Lana grabbed Elias’ guitar. She threatened to use it as a weapon, but Rusev stopped her. Rusev then dropped the guitar on the floor, and it landed with a thud. Elias was not happy. He retrieved the guitar, and anxiously strummed a chord. Relieved it still sounded good, he gently sit the guitar back down.

Back in the ring, Rusev wanted a test of strength. Elias did a classic heel cheapshot — acting as if he as going for the knuckle lock only to kick Rusev in the gut. Elias began to work over Rusev. Bayley taunted from the apron as she mocked the “number one” chants from earlier. Rusev made a comeback — and Rusev crush. Despite the crushing, Elias esacped the Accolade to tag out.

Lana ran wild, leading to an X-factor for a near fall. Bayley soon fired up. Perched on the turnbuckles, Bayley went to set up a high risk move only for Lana to trip her. Bayley smacked into the top turnbuckle, and Lana covered for the pinfall. Happy Rusev Day.

Lana celebrated like she won gold at the Olympics. She gave an impassioned victory speech in a foreign language during a post-match interview. Rusev closed the promo by declaring that today was offically “Ravishing Rusev Day” in honor of his wife. And they all lived happily ever after.

Next week on Mixed Match Challenge, Nia Jax & Apollo Crews meet Charlotte & Bobby Roode in the last first round match.

WWE Raw video highlights: Braun Strowman sings a song for Elias

Less than two weeks out from the Elimination Chamber, the lineup for the men’s match finally became official on Monday night.

Seth Rollins was added to what had been announced as a fatal four-way qualifier, and Rollins and Finn Balor ended up pinning Bray Wyatt at the same time. The show went off the air with Rollins and Balor arguing over who won, then Kurt Angle added both of them to the Chamber match in a Facebook Live video.

The most memorable segment from last night involved two other participants in the men’s Elimination Chamber. After Elias stole the pin from him in a triple threat last week, Braun Strowman performed a song of his own for Elias and hit him with an upright bass.

Also on Raw, Bayley took on Sasha Banks, John Cena faced The Miz in a match where the loser would enter the Elimination Chamber first, and Kurt Angle announced that Ronda Rousey would be at the pay-per-view for a contract signing.

Tag title rematch, Cena vs. Strowman vs. Elias set for Raw tonight

Two more matches have been announced for tonight’s episode of Raw in Des Moines, Iowa.

In a rematch from the Royal Rumble, Cesaro & Sheamus will defend their Raw Tag Team titles against Seth Rollins & Jason Jordan. There will also be a triple threat match between John Cena, Braun Strowman, and Elias. Those three qualified for the men’s Elimination Chamber last Monday, and the winner of the triple threat will be the last person to enter the Chamber during the match.

Cesaro & Sheamus won the titles from Rollins & Jordan at the Royal Rumble last month. Dave Meltzer reported that Jordan is dealing with a neck injury, and that was worked into the story of their title match at the Rumble as Rollins had to effectively face Cesaro & Sheamus on his own. Jordan also didn’t wrestle at any of this weekend’s house shows.

As was previously announced, Roman Reigns will face Bray Wyatt in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match on Raw tonight. The build to the women’s Elimination Chamber will continue as well.

UPDATE: Asuka vs. Bayley is also set for Raw tonight.

Three WWE Elimination Chamber qualifying matches set for tonight

Brock Lesnar’s challenger for WrestleMania will be decided at the Elimination Chamber next month, and the first three qualifying matches for the pay-per-view are set for tonight.

John Cena vs. Finn Balor, Braun Strowman vs. Kane in a last man standing match, and Matt Hardy vs. Elias are scheduled for tonight’s episode of Raw, with the winners advancing to the PPV. Cena vs. Balor will be the first time the two have ever faced off in a singles match, though Cena did eliminate Balor in last night’s Royal Rumble.

While WWE has yet to announce the three remaining qualifying matches, Roman Reigns has been expected to be Lesnar’s WrestleMania challenger for nearly a year. Dave Meltzer reported last March that Lesnar vs. Reigns was the plan for WrestleMania 34.

After losing the Intercontinental Championship to The Miz on Raw 25, Reigns will get his rematch for the title tonight.

The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada will host Elimination Chamber on February 25th. The show is the final Raw-exclusive PPV before WrestleMania, and the venue has indicated in their advertising that there will be two Elimination Chamber matches.

WWE: Samoa Joe injured, Elias-Bayley set for Mixed Match Challenge

Samoa Joe is out of the upcoming Mixed Match Challenge tournament due to an apparent injury.

WWE started a fan vote last night to decide between Joe, Elias, and Jason Jordan for the final spot on the Raw side. Joe apparently won that vote, but Kurt Angle tweeted today that Elias would be taking Joe’s spot due to injury.

“Thank you all for voting for @itsBayleyWWE partner in #WWEMMC, but due to an injury suffered on #Raw @SamoaJoe is unable to compete,” Angle wrote. “Therefore the runner-up @IAmEliasWWE will be Bayley’s partner. #WWEMMC”

Joe appeared on Raw last night and defeated Rhyno. He did an in-ring interview after the match where he announced himself for the Royal Rumble, saying John Cena will be the first person he eliminates.

In an article on WWE.com, Dr. Chris Amann said Joe felt a pop in the bottom of his right foot during the match against Rhyno. “We took a look and believe he has a plantar fascia rupture, which is a thick tissue rupture under the foot,” Amann said, “We will get an MRI to confirm. Treatment includes a period of immobilization in a boot with crutches and platelet rich plasma injections.”

Elias & Bayley are Raw’s final team in the mixed tag tournament. Three more SmackDown pairings still need to be announced before the series debuts on Facebook Watch next Tuesday.

Two more matches set for WWE Survivor Series pre-show

With a two-hour pre-show taking place before the main card, the lineup for Survivor Series seemed to have a couple of spots open heading into tonight.

WWE has corrected that by adding two more matches to the pre-show, with Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn set to face Breezango and Matt Hardy taking on Elias. Enzo Amore will also defend his Cruiserweight Championship against Kalisto (in what is the pay-per-view’s only title match) before the main card kicks off.

Owens & Zayn didn’t miss any time on television after being sent home from WWE’s European tour as they returned to SmackDown and faced The New Day last Tuesday. That match didn’t have a finish due to the angle with Raw invading, which saw Owens & Zayn bail during the brawl as part of their storyline issues with SmackDown’s authority figures.

Neither Hardy nor Elias appeared on Raw’s go-home show for Survivor Series.

The Survivor Series pre-show will begin at 5 p.m. Eastern time tonight before the main card starts two hours later. Here’s the full lineup for the PPV:

  • Brock Lesnar vs. AJ Styles (Universal Champion vs. WWE Champion)
  • Kurt Angle, Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe, Finn Balor & Triple H vs. Shane McMahon, Randy Orton, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura & John Cena in an elimination tag match
  • Alicia Fox, Nia Jax, Asuka, Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Becky Lynch, Naomi, Carmella, Tamina & Natalya in an elimination tag match
  • The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose) vs. The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods)
  • Alexa Bliss vs. Charlotte Flair (Raw Women’s Champion vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion)
  • Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The Usos (Raw Tag Team Champions vs. SmackDown Tag Team Champions)
  • The Miz vs. Baron Corbin (Intercontinental Champion vs. United States Champion)
  • WWE Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore defending against Kalisto (pre-show match)
  • Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. Breezango (pre-show match)
  • Matt Hardy vs. Elias (pre-show match)

WWE Main Event results: Elias makes his show debut

The Big Takeaway: Nigel McGuinness replaced Corey Graves on commentary, and we were treated to excellent tag team action in the cruiserweight division. Elias also made his Main Event debut, stealing a win against Kalisto in the main event.

**********

Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali defeated TJP & Brian Kendrick (6:33)

Kendrick and Dorado started off and exchanged chops. A head scissors takedown sent Kendrick outside, then Ali tagged in and they double-teamed Kendrick for a two count. Kendrick took over, tagged in TJP, and the heels started to slow the match down.

Ali outsmarted TJP, using some quick skill to flip out of a wrist lock and TJP backed off impressed. Ali mimicked the dab and gave TJP a hurricanrana. He tagged in Dorado and the pair double-teamed both TJP and Kendrick, cleaning house.

Kendrick and Ali then settled into it, with TJP sweeping the legs of Ali while the referee was distracted. The heels cut the ring in half and worked over the left shoulder of Ali.

After Dorado got the hot tag and worked over TJP, he tagged in Ali to finish him off. Dorado did a suicide dive onto Kendrick to the outside to take care of the threat, while in the ring Ali hit a neckbreaker to put TJP in position for the 054. This was a good win for Dorado and Ali, who worked really smoothly as a team.

Elias defeated Kalisto (2:24)

Elias was introduced in the middle of the ring, playing a song that buried Omaha, Nebraska where Main Event was being taped. The crowd booed so he started over because he had told them “to hold their applause.” Kalisto’s music cut him off and Elias was maddened.

Elias cut off any attempts by Kalisto to kick him and outpace him. Kalisto was slung around the ring until he connected with a right foot and a springboard crossbody. He sent Elias outside and used a springboard moonsault as we went to a break.

Kalisto gave Elias a hurricanrana to the mat as we returned, getting a two count. He used another top rope moonsault and went for the Salida del Sol, but Elias caught him and reversed it into the Drift Away and got the win after having taken virtually none of the match.
