Impact Wrestling results: Sydal vs. Cage, Moose vs. Eli Drake

The show opened with the over-the-top entrance of Grado, accompanied by Katarina. Eddie Edwards quickly interrupted. He pulled Grado from the top rope and hit him with the Singapore cane.

Edwards called out Tommy Dreamer, calling him a fraud. Edwards was angry that Dreamer interrupted his fight in the woods with Sami Callihan last week.

Dreamer tried to use reason with Edwards. He told him to put the cane down. Edwards called the hardcore legend a fraud for wanting to stop violence when Dreamer made his reputation as a hardcore fighter. Dreamer said we know more about concussions now and head injuries now than in the 1990s.

Dreamer tried praise, telling Edwards that he had all the talent in the world to be Impact Champion. Edwards smacked Dreamer over the head with the cane. Dreamer, once recovered, walked angrily backstage and said he was quitting the promotion.

Taya Valkyrie defeated Rebel

Rebel put on a splits display throughout the match. As the heel, Valkyrie controlled the pace of much of the match. Rebel rallied to hit a Kinshasa that led two a two-count. She went for a moonsault and landed on her feet, but Valkyrie hit a spear, then a double chicken wing front face splash for the win.

An out-of-breath Valkyrie grabbed the mic and challenged Madison Rayne.

“Put your hands together and give Madison Rayne a round of applause because she is back in the Impact Zone,” she said, before telling the crowd to show up. Valkyrie called herself “Lucha royalty,” and said “This is my kingdom.”

Flashback Moment of the Week: AJ Styles defeated Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe to win the X Division Championship (Unbreakable 2005)

This was a flashback match to when TNA was still the brand and they wrestled in a six-sided ring.

The crowd was totally hot for the match, which was a reminder of the talent that was once in TNA.

In one of the many highlights, Styles hit a Pele kick on Joe, put him in a torture rack backbreaker, and then dropped him on his back. Daniels saved the pin. Styles hit a Styles Clash on Daniels, but Joe broke up the pinfall. Eventually, Styles reversed a double-arm back suplex to drop Daniels on his back for the pinfall to win the X Division Championship.

Cult of Lee (Trevor Lee & Caleb Konley) defeated KM & Fallah Bahh

Bahh was over largely because of his physique, a short, round guy. Commentator Josh Mathews said KM and Bahh were being recruited by Hollywood for a film. During his entrance, Bahh picked up a sign that said “#fat kids rule the world.”

There were lots of double team spots with Bahh and KM working over either Konley or Lee. At one point both members of Cult of Lee were laid out inside the ring and the hefty Bahh rolled over them — twice.

Cult of Lee won after Bahh got his eyes raked, and then, unable to see, gave KM a Samoan drop, when KM was trying to help him. Konley pinned KM.

Bahh and KM argued after the match. KM pushed Bahh to the ground and then said he was “done” before walking away from the ring.

Moose defeated Eli Drake

The match took place from the old ECW Arena in Philadelphia. On the line was a title shot against Austin Aries at Slammiversary.

This was a long, methodical match. There was a good spot where Moose swung Drake by the legs, Cesaro style, into the guard rails on the outside of the ring.

Drake hit a cool superplex, but Moose kicked out.

Moose won after a spear for the pin on Drake, and will now challenge Aries at Slammiversary.

Tessa Blanchard defeated Kiera Hogan in a no DQ match

Hogan got the match started quickly with several elbows to Blanchard’s chest outside the ring. Hogan, wearing red and yellow, landed several stiff right hands.

This was a no disqualification match. Blanchard eventually turned the tide, hitting Hogan with two hard dropkicks into her back, as she was leaning up against the ropes.

The two exchanged several hardcore spots using a steel chair.

Blanchard won after throwing Hogan face first onto a steel chair for the pin.

El Hijo Del Fantasma defeated Jake Crist

Fantasma is the AAA Latin American Champion. Not much of a match. Fantasma won with a flying body scissors that he transitioned into a roll-up for the win.

After the match, brother Dave Crist and Sami Callihan triple teamed Fantasma, nearly removing his mask. The lights dimmed and out came Pentagon, chasing Callihan and the Crist brothers from the scene.

X-Division Champion Matt Sydal defeated Brian Cage by countout

Mathews noted that Brian Cage beat Bobby Lashley twice recently. Sydal, with his long hair, was looking a lot like Dolph Ziggler

The match consisted of Sydal trying to stick and move while Cage stalked him. Sydal used his quickness to hit a kick to the head and then a splash. Cage ,however, popped up, and then curled him several times like he was a barbell, before dumping him on his back. Cage then delivered 10 clotheslines to Sydal against the corner turnbuckle.

The match was then interrupted by Jimmy Jacobs and Kongo Kong, who stood on the ramp. Thanks to their presence, Sydal rallied

Cage hit a superplex from the bottom rope inside of the ring. Sydal tried a hurricanrana and Cage caught him and threw him into the turnbuckle.

Cage was exhausted during the match. It spilled to the outside and, when the referee wasn’t looking, Kong threw Cage into the steel steps, forcing Cage to lose by countout. It was Cage’s first loss.

WrestleCade SuperShow results: Cornette’s last match as manager

Submitted by reader Jake Koch

As part of their convention in Winston-Salem, North Carolina this weekend, WrestleCade presented a show opposite WWE’s Starrcade event last night. Here are the results:

– The Extreme Horsemen defeated The Squad, The Heatseekers, and The Boys

The Extreme Horsemen won with a slingshot superkick on one of the Squad members.

– Billy Gunn defeated Carlito

Gunn sold for most of the match after being posted by Carlito on the outside. For the finish, he hit the Famouser when Carlito accidentally spit the apple in the referee’s face and they were arguing about it.

– Zane Dawson defeated Tommy Dreamer and Luke Hawx

Hawx had a bandage on his head, with Kevin Kelly saying on commentary that he was doing stunt work for a movie and was injured. Dreamer wore Dusty Rhodes yellow and black tights with the House of Hardcore logo on them.

Dawson pinned Dreamer with a lariat after Dreamer gave a Death Valley Driver to Hawx.

After the match, Dreamer got on the mic to say he wears Dusty Rhodes’ colors so nobody will forget Rhodes’ brilliance. He talked about Rhodes making Starrcade an event, saying he knows WWE’s Starrcade was just down the road and thanking the fans for selling WrestleCade out. He said this was where real wrestling and fans were.

– Jerry Lawler defeated George South

The highlight was South’s mic work before the match. He insulted the crowd and said he waited a long time to get Lawler in the ring. He said he was going to dedicate the match to his “good friend” Andy Kaufman and use the piledriver to beat Lawler. Lawler then got on the mic and said he’d use a move from his good friend Steve Austin. He hit a weak stunner on South and the match began.

Lawler won by using his feet on the ropes for the pin. The referee saw it, but he let it slide because South kept pushing him during the match.

– The Veterans of War (Wilcox & Mayweather) defeated Bobby Lashley & King Mo

VOW hit a double team cutter on Mo for the pin as Lashley was tossed to the outside.

– Caleb Konley, Juventud Guerrera & Super Crazy defeated Willie Mack, PJ Black & Jason Kincaid

Konley, Guerrera, and Super Crazy won in a wild finish. Mack went crazy and hit stunners on everyone, including his own team. He tried to hit one on the referee, but the ref blocked it and hit Mack with one of his own. Guerrera was able to hit a big splash and there was a pile on for the pin.

– Jungle Grrrl defeated Amber O’Neal by DQ in a WOW match

This was an overbooked mess. The ref was bumped, then Lana Star tried to help O’Neal but accidentally hit her with some sort of glass object. The ref was knocked down and couldn’t make the count. O’Neal hit an X-Factor, but a second ref was pulled out of the ring.

The Beast ran in and chokeslammed Jungle Grrrl, gave O’Neal a DDT, and gave Star a chokeslam when Star tried to suck up to her. It was announced that Jungle Grrrl won by DQ because The Beast touched her first.

– Dan Severn (w/ Jim Cornette) defeated Josh Woods

Severn pinned Woods suddenly as Woods was trying to lock in an armbar. Cornette and Severn shook Woods’ hand after the match and put him over on the mic.

Cornette then thanked the fans and mentioned this was his last match as a manager after 35 years. He said he didn’t want to keep coming out and risk hurting himself and being laughed at. He noted that he’s been around the world and could have chosen anywhere to end his managerial run, but the Carolinas are what started his career.

He thanked Dusty Rhodes, Jim Crockett Promotions, and The Midnight Express for allowing him to work with them and making his career.

– Hurricane Helms won a battle royal to win the Top Rope Belts title

Other wrestlers in this included Mr. Hughes, Tracy Smothers, Bobby Fulton, Kevin Thorne, Crazzy Steve, D’Lo Brown, Swoggle, and several local names.

– Helms received his title for winning the battle royal, which came off like a sponsored segment for Top Rope Belts.

– Ivelisse defeated Taya Valkyrie in a no DQ match

Ivelisse submitted Valkyrie with a choke while using a big steel chain after Valkyrie missed an elbow drop and crashed into a table. A chair, ladder, kendo stick, trash can, table, metal sheet, and chains were used in the match.

This was the only match to feature brawling in the crowd. Ivelisse bled a bit after a shot to the head from the metal sheet.

– Impact Global Champion Eli Drake defeated Johnny Impact and Jack Swagger to retain his title

Swagger was introduced by Dutch Mantell. He came out with his wife Catalina Swagger and they did a fun Dancing with the Stars bit.

Drake got the pin on Impact by using his feet on the ropes following Impact hitting Starship Pain on Swagger.

Catalina Swagger got involved during the match a lot, including Jack making the save when Drake picked her up and pressed her over his head. She slapped Impact, with Valkyrie coming out and carrying her to the back.

Drake got on the mic to brag after his win. Valkyrie and Catalina then came out as friends with kendo sticks and forced him back into the ring. Swagger and Impact held Drake so Valkyrie could chop him, then both women hit him with the kendo sticks. Impact and Swagger put Drake in a double ankle lock before letting him escape the ring.

The match broke down and a brawl broke out. Justice attempted a dive before the other guys all caught him. Allie then dove off the top turnbuckle onto all of them.

The finish came when Adonis attempted the Adonis Lock and Edwards rolled through to score the win.

Adonis refused to put on the suit, with Drake wanting to do a random draw to pick someone else. Adonis tried to leave, but security wouldn’t let him.

Borash announced that if Adonis doesn’t put the suit on Drake has to instead. Eventually, Adonis put the suit on and got in Allie’s face because she was laughing.

**********

The show opened with Alberto El Patron showing up and them asking what is he going to be doing here tonight.

X-DIVISION CHAMPION TREVOR LEE VS. DEZMOND XAVIER VS. GARZA JR. VS. SONJAY DUTT VS. MATT SYDAL VS.  PETEY WILLIAMS

They announced this as “Lucha style” meaning no tags but two people legal. However, it’s not an elimination match but the first pin or submission wins. Because they are in Canada, Williams got a huge reaction and came out to “O’ Canada” with the flag.

This was a good match with lots of high flying. Not everything was super crisp but it was a fun match that the crowd liked. Highlights included Xavier doing a Space Flying Tiger Drop, Williams doing a pescado into a huracanrana, and a triple tope spot. Sydal looked good. Garza’s shoulder is messed up from surgery and he clearly wasn’t ready to be back.

The finish saw Williams finally hit the Canadian Destroyer (which the match built to) on Xavier but Lee threw Williams out of the ring and stole the pin.

TYSON DUX VS. TAIJI ISHIMORI

They called Dux the hottest free agent in Canada. NOAH Chairman Masayuki Uchida came out with Ishimori. They pushed that the winner would be in line for a shot at Lee. This was a short match that was more like a TV enhancement match. Ishimori won ith a 450, so they are probably doing Lee vs. Ishimori at TV Monday or later in the week.

Grado saw Abyss, called him Joseph, and said we don’t need to do this. Abyss said, “There’s no Joseph here but you’re about to feel pain and suffering and carnage” and said he’s about to be exported. (Actually, deported). Grado stood up to him, said it’s a different Grado and called him Joseph again.

ALBERTO EL PATRON PROMO

Alberto el Patron is now out and wants to give us a history lesson. He got a good reaction but not overwhelming. He’s doing an anti-authority gimmick. He talked about what the company, the cowards, and the perros did to him. They screwed him and destroyed him because they have no cajones. He called them backstabbers. They believed all the lies instead of reading the reports because “as the reports will tell you, I didn’t do anything but they suspended me and stopped paying me.” The announcers are acting like it’s a shoot and talked about pulling the mic.

Alberto said they stripped him of the title, that the current champion is fake and he has to beat him to be the real champion. He said this place didn’t care about his family, his young children, and said there’s a loser who wanted to spread lies and stuff that never happened. He said after showing that he didn’t do anything, none of them called or texted him and nobody came to his house. He vowed to do something tonight and said the place was filled with losers, cowards and backstabbers.

He went to Jeremy Borash and said he thought they were friends and asked him where he was three months ago. He said JB never called or texted him. Fans wanted him to put Borash through a table. He told Borash to tell the people if he called. Borash said he never called, never texted, and apologized. He and Borash shook hands and Borash acted all nervous. Alberto said he was going to make a statement. JB said they should talk about this tonight, but then Alberto did nothing and said, “Maybe not”. He just said, “Tonight would be amazing” and then he left.

GRADO VS. ABYSS IN A MONSTER’S BALL MATCH WHERE GRADO’S VISA IS AT STAKE

This was a mess. They did the thumbtacks and barbed wire boards including Grado splashing on board with Abyss in the middle, making a barbed wire board sandwich. At one point, Van Ness interfered and gave Grado a low blow for not marrying her. Van Ness got Janice the nail board and then the lights went out. Rosemary came out and attacked Van Ness and saved Grado by blowing mist at Van Ness. Abyss was about to chokeslam Rosemary, but they were a team before and she stroked his forehead.  She went to blow mist at Grado who moved, and Abyss got the mist in the eyes.  Abyss was blinded and chokeslammed Rosemary on thumbtacks instead. Grado then schoolboyed Abyss for a three count and the bell rang.  Borash, who knew it wasn’t the right finish, said he kicked out at two and the timekeeper rang the bell early. Abyss won with a black hole slam on a barbed wire board right afterward.

TEAM IMPACT (ETHAN CARTER III & JAMES STORM & EDDIE EDWARDS)  VS. TEAM AAA (TEXANO & EL HIJO DEL FANTASMA & PAGANO)

Dorian Roldan was out with Team AAA. They mentioned Edwards was going to defend the GHC title on Impact Thursday night, so that’s being taped tomorrow.

This was a long match that was really sloppy a lot of the way. Pagano isn’t good at all and a lot of the other stuff looked mistimed, but they did a lot of big moves and the crowd was into the Impact vs. outsiders idea. Storm pinned Pagano with a superkick that didn’t land solid after ECIII used low blows on Pagano & Texano at the same time that led to a double One Percenter. Early on they teased that ECIII wouldn’t tag in but later he did, and at the end, he was all in on the team and celebrated with Storm. Edwards took a package tombstone from Fantasma and was taken out, although he was celebrating, to set up Storm’s win.

TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS OVE VS. LAX FOR THE TAG TITLES IN A 5150 STREET FIGHT

The rules basically were that it’s a gang war so everyone can legally interfere.

OVE retained the titles in a big brawl with all the weapons used again. The finish saw Sami Callihan throw powder in Konnan’s eyes and then throw Santana off the top rope onto a ladder bridge. He then gave Ortiz a piledriver off the apron through a table and both Crist Brothers pinned Ortiz to win. They buried LAX under a Mexican flag when it was over.

Before the match, Callihan had supposedly hit someone with a pipe and the idea was that it was Homicide backstage buried under a Mexican flag and taken out. Most likely, it was just some extra. At one point, Santana did a New Jack dive on Dave off a light stand through a table after Ortiz had powerbomed Jake off the stage through a table. There was a chair shot to the head as well. These guys took a ton of punishment to get the match over. There was some sloppiness in the sense this wouldn’t be a good match on a major league show but it worked here and the crowd liked it.

KNOCKOUTS CHAMPION SIENNA VS. GAIL KIM VS. ALLIE

Anthony Carelli (Santino Marella) was shown at ringside. They called him Anthony Carelli and Josh Matthews said he’s known him so long he calls him Boris (his OVW name a long time ago).

The match was sloppy. The whole story was about Kim trying to win the title in her final Bound for Glory, which she did, pinning Sienna with the Eat Defeat off the middle rope. When the match was over, Borash said it was Gail’s final match and that was was retiring on top. I guess she’ll retire with the title on TV. The crowd like Kim so the story worked, but it’s not like they went crazy for it.

Jimmy Jacobs showed up which is interesting that he was on both ROH and Impact. They said how Jacobs doesn’t work here. He said, “I don’t work here? That’s what you think.”

BOBBY LASHLEY & KING MO LAWAL VS. STEPHAN BONNAR & MOOSE

They showed UFC welterweight Colby Covington backstage with Dan Lambert and a couple of other guys as ATT.

Lashley pinned Moose with a spear after Moose was distracted by Covington. It was a numbers game as there were four ATT guys who interfered and were in the cage so it was 6-on-2 at the end.  Moose and Lashley carried it and would break it up whenever Mo squared off with Bonnar.  When Mo and Bonnar finally went at it after several teases, they did basic MMA stuff and it was okay.  It was more a story match. I wouldn’t call it good or bad but it wasn’t as if the angle was super hot here.

Moose and Mo ended up going out the door. Lambert then threw Mo in and all the ATT guys (including Lambert) got in the cage and Lambert locked the cage door with Moose out of the cage. Bonnar had a quick spot of cleaning house until he was beaten down. The big spot saw Moose climb the cage and do a crossbody off the top of the cage onto everyone. Moose also did a tree slam off the top rope on John Harnett, a smaller guy who is a manager at ATT who took a good bump.

GLOBAL CHAMPION ELI DRAKE VS. JOHNNY IMPACT

Chris Adonis is in Drake’s corner.

They were having a good match, but it was nowhere near world title heat.  The finish was overbooked and turned out to be all about Alberto.  They did a ton of near falls. Impact had it won but Adonis interfered. Impact laid out Adonis with a belt shot that Adonis had brought in. Impact later hit Starship Pain and Alberto el Patron showed up and pulled the ref out of the ring. Impact went for a dive on Alberto, who moved, and Impact wiped out the ref. Alberto then nailed Drake with a belt shot, acting like he didn’t care who won. Then, he nailed Impact with a hard unprotected chair shot to the head.  Alberto then put Drake on top of Impact and the ref counted the pin with Drake retaining the title.

This was a good match but the interference in so many matches earlier made this more annoying than heated by the time they got here.

The heels jumped the faces after until Rosemary ran out for the save. The heels overwhelmed her before Taya Valkyrie made her debut. Valkyrie teased going after Sienna but instead attacked Rosemary.

– Jim Cornette came down to the ring. He talked about all the changes in GFW and new talent. Johnny Impact came out and said he wants to challenge the winner of tonight’s championship match next.

GFW crowns new World Champion at TV tapings

Eli Drake is the new GFW Unified World Champion following tonight’s tapings in Florida.

In a 20-man gauntlet match, Drake entered as the first participant and outlasted everyone else, last eliminating Eddie Edwards to win the title. This will air on the August 24th edition of Impact.

On the episode that aired tonight, it was officially announced that former champion Alberto El Patron had been stripped of the title. Bruce Prichard first tried to award it to Bobby Lashley, but Jim Cornette returned as an on-screen authority figure and set up the gauntlet match.

The move to strip El Patron was made earlier this week following GFW’s investigation of the Orlando International Airport incident between El Patron and fiancee Paige from July. GFW released a statement saying that “While it is apparent that initial reports unfairly characterized El Patron’s involvement in the incident in the Orlando airport, we are nonetheless disappointed with the manner in which he dealt with this situation, we expect more decorum from all on the GFW roster, especially the World Champion.”

While their investigation of the incident has concluded, El Patron remains suspended.

Drake, 34, had been in NXT as Slate Randall before joining Global Force Wrestling in 2015, most recently teaming with Chris Adonis, aka Chris Masters.

Jeff then made his open challenge and called out World Champion Bobby Lashley. Lashley knew Jeff would call him out and was prepared to defend the title. This meant that nobody else could challenge for the World title nor could anyone challenge for the tag titles. Jeff sent Matt to the back so he can do it on his own.

TNA World Heavyweight Champion Bobby Lashley defeated Jeff Hardy to retain his title

Trevor Lee called out DJ Z for Open Fight Night. DJ Z came out selling the injured leg from last week. DJ Z knocked Lee off the ladder and followed up by hitting a DDT off the ladder. Shane Helms passed a chair to Lee who used it to knock down DJ Z and worked the leg.

Lee then put DJ Z’s leg in the chair and locked the chair in the bottom rung of the ladder. DJ Z was trapped and couldn’t get out, which enabled Lee to climb up the ladder to win the X Division title.

– In the back, Robbie E challenged Aron Rex to a match right now but Rex would only face him next week.

Ethan Carter III defeated Eli Drake (w/ Tyrus)

Before the match, Tyrus called out Ethan Carter III to face Eli Drake. EC3 had a large purple bruise on his side. Drake jumped EC3 to start the match. EC3 fought in his jeans and sold his ribs the entire match.

They fought at ringside and Drake continued to work over EC3’s ribs. Drake tried to use a baseball bat but EC3 fought him off. Suddenly, EC3 rolled up Drake to win the match.

After the match, Drake grabbed the bat and went crazy beating EC3 with it. The lights went out and The DCC appeared in the ring. They teased fighting Drake and Tyrus but instead attacked EC3. Drake and Tyrus were celebrating when DCC jumped them too. The DCC gave EC3 a spike piledriver on a steel chair to end the show.

Next Week: The only thing announced for next week is that Aron Rex will go one-on-one with Robbie E.
