Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin win WWE NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin are the 2024 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament winners.

The duo defeated Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams in the opener of Sunday’s NXT Vengeance Day premium live event, with Breakker hitting a spear on Hayes for the win. As a result of their victory, Breakker & Corbin have now earned a future NXT Tag Team title match against current champions Stacks & Tony D’Angelo.

Just prior to the start of the tournament, Corbin suggested to Breakker that they team up. Breakker seemed reluctant about the idea, but eventually agreed. They defeated Gallus and the team of Nathan Frazer & Axiom to reach the finals.

Although Williams wanted to focus on his NXT Championship match against Ilja Dragunov at Vengeance Day, he eventually agreed to team with Hayes, saying he could wrestle twice in the same night if need be and become a triple crown champion. They defeated Edris Enofe & Malik Blade as well as the Latino World Order (Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro) to make it to Sunday’s tournament finals.

Dusty Classic finals official for WWE NXT Vengeance Day

The finals are set for this year’s WWE NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams defeated Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro of the LWO on Tuesday’s NXT episode to advance to the finals to be held at Sunday’s Vengeance Day event where they will meet Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin.

Williams will be pulling double duty on Sunday’s show where he will also challenge Ilja Dragunov for the NXT Championship in the main event.

Hayes & Williams defeated Edris Enofe & Malik Blade in the quarterfinals, then the LWO in the semifinals to punch their ticket to Sunday’s finals. Breakker & Corbin defeated Gallus in the quarterfinals, then Axiom & Nathan Frazer in the semis to advance.

The Dusty Classic winners traditionally receive an NXT Tag Team title shot at a later date. The NXT Tag Team Championship is currently held by Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo.

Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin are going to WWE NXT Vengeance Day.

Breakker & Corbin defeated Axiom & Nathan Frazer in a semifinals match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic on Tuesday’s WWE NXT episode to advance to the tournament finals at Vengeance Day set for Sunday, February 4.

They now await the winner of next week’s Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams vs. LWO’s Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro matchup in the finals.

The odd couple pairing of Breakker & Corbin has gone 2-0 in this year’s Dusty Classic with wins over Gallus in the quarterfinals, and now Axiom & Frazer in Tuesday’s semifinals. Hayes & Williams defeated Edris Enofe & Malik Blade in their quarterfinals matchup. Wilde & Del Toro defeated Chase U’s Andre Chase & Duke Hudson to earn their spot in the semifinals.

The Dusty Classic winners will receive a future shot at the NXT Tag Team Championship currently held by Tony D’Angelo & Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo.

WWE NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic semifinals set

The semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic are now set following Tuesday’s episode of WWE NXT.

Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams, plus the LWO’s Cruz Del Toro & Joaquin Wilde advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 Dusty Classic with victories on Tuesday’s episode.

The LWO’s Del Toro & Wilde will face Hayes & Williams in a semifinals bout at a date yet to be announced, but most likely on the January 30 WWE NXT episode.

On the other side of the Dusty Classic bracket, Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin will take on Nathan Frazer & Axiom in the other semifinal matchup. That contest will take place on the January 23 WWE NXT show.

The Dusty Classic finals will take place at WWE NXT Vengeance Day on Sunday, February 4.

Two title matches were also confirmed for Vengeance Day during this week’s NXT show, as Ilja Dragunov defends the NXT Championship against Williams, while Lyra Valkyria puts the NXT Women’s title on the line against Roxanne Perez.

NXT on social media announced that Gallus will face Baron Corbin & Bron Breakker, while Hank Walker & Tank Ledger will face Nathan Frazer & Axiom. The full bracket for the tournament will be revealed on Tuesday.

The teams of Corbin & Breakker, as well as Axiom & Frazer, were announced on Sunday. Both teams expressed interest in teaming with one another on last week’s NXT.

A Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament was not held in 2023. The tournament in 2022 saw The Creed Brothers emerge victorious in the men’s tournament, while Kay Lee Ray (Alba Fyre) and Io Shirai (IYO SKY) won the women’s tournament.

WWE NXT announces first two Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic teams

The first two teams in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic have been confirmed.

NXT announced on social media that Nathan Frazer & Axiom and Baron Corbin & Bron Breakker will team together in the tournament, which begins on Tuesday’s show when they’ll be in action. Their opponents will be announced Monday.

Both teams assembled on last week’s NXT. Corbin and Breakker, who have exchanged words on more than one occasion, reluctantly agreed to team together. Axiom and Frazer, who recently faced off against one another at the NXT Deadline pre-show last month, were more enthused about teaming with one another. However, they had a confrontation with another tag team, Edris Enofe & Malik Blade.

Here is the updated lineup for NXT:

  • Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic: Nathan Frazer & Axiom vs. ???
  • Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic: Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin vs. ???
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo defend against OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic to begin on next week’s WWE NXT

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will kick off on the January 9 episode of WWE NXT.

It was revealed during this week’s New Year’s Evil special that the Dusty Rhodes tournament will begin on the Tuesday, January 9 edition of the show, and several teams were teased as entering.

On-screen authority figure Ava (Simone Johnson) announced the tournament in an interview during New Year’s Evil.

Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin agreed to team up for the tournament in a backstage promo segment on Tuesday, as did the duo of Nathan Frazer & Axiom. Edris Enofe and Malik Blade, plus Andre Chase & Duke Hudson were also teased as entering the tournament.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was last held in 2022. In all there have been seven men’s tournaments, and two women’s. The tournament winner traditionally receives an NXT Tag Team title shot. With the NXT Women’s Tag titles unified with the WWE Women’s Tag titles last year, it would appear that there will be just a men’s Dusty Rhodes Classic this year.

The NXT Tag Team titles will also be defended on next week’s show.

Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo will defend their titles against OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price. OTM won a number one contender’s match on the December 26 episode to set up the bout.

Also set for next week, Cora Jade will take on Gigi Dolin.

The announced lineup for the Tuesday, January 9 WWE NXT:

  • Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic begins
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo defend against OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price
  • Cora Jade vs. Gigi Dolin

Cody Rhodes announces return of two WWE NXT tournaments

Two WWE NXT tournaments are set to make their return.

Going into tonight’s NXT, WWE hyped that Cody Rhodes would be making a major announcement. Rhodes kicked off the show and revealed that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and Men’s Breakout Tournament will both be returning.

Rhodes said the Men’s Breakout Tournament will begin following the conclusion of the ongoing Women’s Breakout Tournament. A timeline for when the Dusty Classic will start wasn’t revealed.

In 2015, the Dusty Classic was established in honor of the late “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. The tournament has been held every year since then except for 2017. There was both a men’s Dusty Classic and a women’s Dusty Classic each of the past two years.

Finn Balor & Samoa Joe, The Authors of Pain, Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, Aleister Black & Ricochet, Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne, MSK, Dakota Kai & Raquel Rodriguez, The Creed Brothers, and Kay Lee Ray & Io Shirai are past Dusty Classic winners.

There have been two previous editions of the Men’s Breakout Tournament. They were won by Jordan Myles (ACH) and Carmelo Hayes.

The Dusty Classic and Men’s Breakout Tournament winners will all earn future title shots. WWE has yet to reveal the participants for the tournaments.

Rhodes also announced that he’s the guest general manager for tonight’s NXT episode. Rhodes booked an NXT Championship match with Ilja Dragunov defending against Dominik Mysterio for later in the show. LA Knight will be the special guest referee for that match.

Semifinals set for WWE NXT men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The semifinals for the 2022 men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic are set following this week’s WWE NXT.

Both MSK and Grizzled Young Veterans advanced past the quarterfinals with wins this week. MSK’s Wes Lee and Nash Carter defeated Jacket Time’s Kushida and Ikemen Jiro to move on, while GYV’s James Drake and Zack Gibson defeated Chase University’s Andre Chase and Bodhi Hayward to advance.

MSK will now face Malik Blade and Edris Enofe in the semifinals, while Grizzled Young Veterans will take on The Creed Brothers.

MSK captured the 2021 men’s Dusty Cup, defeating Grizzled Young Veterans in the finals. Grizzled Young Veterans have made the finals two years in a row, as they dropped the 2020 tournament finals to Riddle and Pete Dunne.

Should they win it all, MSK would become the first team to win the Dusty Cup twice. Grizzled Young Veterans are former NXT UK Tag Team Champions.

First two teams advance in WWE NXT men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The first two teams have booked their spots in the men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic semifinals.

The Creed Brothers (Julius & Brutus Creed) and Malik Blade & Edris Enofe booked their spots in the semifinals with first-round wins on tonight’s NXT. The Creed Brothers defeated Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen, while Blade & Enofe defeated Legado del Fantasma’s Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde.

A distraction led to Blade & Enofe getting the upset win over Legado del Fantasma. After Santos Escobar interfered, NXT Champion Bron Breakker made his way down to ringside and laid Escobar out. Blade then rolled up Mendoza as he was distracted by what was going on with Breakker an Escobar.

The Creed Brothers will face either The Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) or Andre Chase & Bodhi Hayward in the semifinals. Blade & Enofe will face either MSK (Wes Lee & Nash Carter) or Jacket Time (Kushida & Ikemen Jiro).

The Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Chase & Hayward and MSK vs. Jacket Time are both taking place on NXT next week.

The team that wins the men’s Dusty Classic will get a title shot against NXT Tag Team Champions Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner).

The women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is also returning for this year. That tournament will begin next month.

The Dusty classic begins on Tuesday’s episode of NXT.

MSK will have a chance to be the first two-time and first repeat tournament winners, as they won last year’s edition. Riddle and Pete Dunne captured the 2020 tournament victory.

MSK won the vacant NXT Tag Team titles at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver night one last April, then dropped the titles to Imperium at Halloween Havoc in October.

The women’s Dusty Classic will begin in February.

Finn Balor & Samoa Joe, The Authors of Pain, Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, Aleister Black & Ricochet, and Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne have also won the men’s Dusty Classic in previous years.

Blade & Enofe qualified for the Dusty Classic by defeating Joe Gacy & Harland by disqualification on the most recent episode of NXT. Harland got disqualified for not obeying the referee’s five count as he was attacking Blade in the corner.

The women’s Dusty Classic is also returning for 2022. That tournament will begin in February.

First team qualifies for men’s WWE NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The first team has been announced for the 2022 men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Malik Blade and Edris Enofe defeated Joe Gacy and Harland on tonight’s episode of WWE NXT to qualify for the tournament.

Blade and Enofe won their match via disqualification, as Harland was disqualified for failing to yield to the referee’s five count as he hit Blade with strikes in the corner. As a result, Blade and Enofe became the first teams to enter the 2022 Dusty Classic field.

This year’s men’s and women’s Dusty Classic tournaments were announced on last week’s episode of NXT. The men’s tournament begins next week, while the women’s tournament will begin in February.

Matches from the 2021 men’s and women’s Dusty Classics were held both on NXT and on 205 Live, with both sets of winners crowned on the NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day pay-per-view. MSK captured the men’s Dusty Cup, while Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai won the inaugural women’s edition of the tournament.

Dusty Classic tournaments returning to WWE NXT for 2022

The men’s and women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournaments are both making their return for 2022.

During New Year’s Evil on Tuesday night, it was announced that the 2022 men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will kick off on NXT in two weeks. It was also revealed that the 2022 women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will begin in February.

The inaugural Dusty Classic took place in 2015 as a way to honor the late Dusty Rhodes and his contributions to pro wrestling and NXT. Finn Balor & Samoa Joe, The Authors of Pain, Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, Aleister Black & Ricochet, Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne, and MSK have won the men’s tournament since it was introduced.

The first-ever women’s Dusty Classic was held last year. It was won by Raquel Gonzalez & Dakota Kai, who were awarded the newly created NXT Women’s Tag Team titles after the tournament.

The winners of the men’s and women’s Dusty Classics will receive a shot at their division’s Tag Team titles.

WWE NXT to hold first-ever women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The first-ever women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is coming to NXT.

On tonight’s New Year’s Evil episode of NXT, general manager William Regal announced that NXT will soon hold its first women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Regal said the decision was made after looking at the strength and depth of NXT’s women’s roster.

Further details — including when the tournament will begin — haven’t been revealed.

The men’s 2021 Dusty Classic will kick off with Undisputed Era (Adam Cole & Roderick Strong) vs. Breezango (Tyler Breeze & Fandango) and The Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) vs. Ever-Rise (Chase Parker & Matt Martel) taking place on NXT next Wednesday (January 13). Curt Stallion & August Grey, Killian Dain & Drake Maverick, Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner), Legado Del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde), and Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory have also been announced for the tournament.

With the exception of 2017, the men’s Dusty Classic has been held annually since 2015. The tournament has been won by Finn Balor & Samoa Joe, The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar), Undisputed Era’s Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, Aleister Black & Ricochet, and Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne.
