Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic to begin on next week’s WWE NXT

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will kick off on the January 9 episode of WWE NXT.

It was revealed during this week’s New Year’s Evil special that the Dusty Rhodes tournament will begin on the Tuesday, January 9 edition of the show, and several teams were teased as entering.

On-screen authority figure Ava (Simone Johnson) announced the tournament in an interview during New Year’s Evil.

Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin agreed to team up for the tournament in a backstage promo segment on Tuesday, as did the duo of Nathan Frazer & Axiom. Edris Enofe and Malik Blade, plus Andre Chase & Duke Hudson were also teased as entering the tournament.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was last held in 2022. In all there have been seven men’s tournaments, and two women’s. The tournament winner traditionally receives an NXT Tag Team title shot. With the NXT Women’s Tag titles unified with the WWE Women’s Tag titles last year, it would appear that there will be just a men’s Dusty Rhodes Classic this year.

The NXT Tag Team titles will also be defended on next week’s show.

Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo will defend their titles against OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price. OTM won a number one contender’s match on the December 26 episode to set up the bout.

Also set for next week, Cora Jade will take on Gigi Dolin.

The announced lineup for the Tuesday, January 9 WWE NXT:

  • Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic begins
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Tony D’Angelo & Stacks Lorenzo defend against OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price
  • Cora Jade vs. Gigi Dolin

Six matches announced for next week’s WWE NXT

The NXT Champion and the NXT Women’s Champion will be in action on next week’s NXT 2.0 episode, as six matches have been announced.

NXT Champion Bron Breakker will face Duke Hudson in a non-title match. The bout was set up on this week’s episode when Breakker walked through a backstage interview with Hudson and McKenzie Mitchell, ignoring Hudson. Hudson then interrupted a Breakker interview in the parking lot later and challenged him to a match for next week.

NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose will face Indi Hartwell in another non-title bout. Hartwell cut a promo on this week’s show discussing her newfound independence as her association with Persia Pirotta and Dexter Lumis ended when both were released last month.

NXT Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly will be in action in another non-title bout, facing Diamond Mine’s Damon Kemp and Roderick Strong.

In another tag team bout, Edris Enofe & Malik Blade will face Tony D’Angelo’s associates Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo & Troy “Two Dimes” Donovan.

Two additional singles bouts were announced, as Alba Fyre will take on Elektra Lopez, plus Wes Lee will face Sanga.

Here is the lineup for next week’s show:

WWE NXT, Tuesday, May 24 —

  • Mandy Rose vs. Indi Hartwell non-title match
  • Pretty Deadly vs. Roderick Strong & Damon Kemp non-title match

Men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic finals set for NXT Vengeance Day

The finals for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic have been set for next week’s NXT Vengeance Day.

The Creed Brothers (Brutus and Julius Creed) picked up their semifinal win in the opening of tonight’s NXT, pinning the Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake and Zack Gibson) after Brutus pinned Gibson with a sliding lariat. Later in the show, MSK (Wes Lee and Nash Carter) defeated Malik Blade and Edris Enofe when Lee pinned Enofe following an assisted neckbreaker off the top rope.

After MSK won their match, they and The Creed Brothers argued in the ring in front of the Dusty Cup trophy.

MSK defeated Jacket Time to make it out of the first round, while The Creed Brothers defeated Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs.

Already announced for Vengeance Day next Tuesday is Carmelo Hayes vs. Cameron Grimes for the NXT North American Championship, Toxic Attraction vs. Indi Hartwell and Persia Pirotta for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship, and Bron Breakker vs. Santos Escobar for the NXT Championship.

Semifinals set for WWE NXT men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The semifinals for the 2022 men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic are set following this week’s WWE NXT.

Both MSK and Grizzled Young Veterans advanced past the quarterfinals with wins this week. MSK’s Wes Lee and Nash Carter defeated Jacket Time’s Kushida and Ikemen Jiro to move on, while GYV’s James Drake and Zack Gibson defeated Chase University’s Andre Chase and Bodhi Hayward to advance.

MSK will now face Malik Blade and Edris Enofe in the semifinals, while Grizzled Young Veterans will take on The Creed Brothers.

MSK captured the 2021 men’s Dusty Cup, defeating Grizzled Young Veterans in the finals. Grizzled Young Veterans have made the finals two years in a row, as they dropped the 2020 tournament finals to Riddle and Pete Dunne.

Should they win it all, MSK would become the first team to win the Dusty Cup twice. Grizzled Young Veterans are former NXT UK Tag Team Champions.

WWE reveals teams for 2022 men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic

The full slate of teams for this year’s men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic has been revealed.

WWE announced the list of participants for the eight-team tournament on social media today. The team that wins the tournament will challenge Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) for the NXT Tag Team titles.

The teams that will be taking part in the tournament are:

  • MSK (Wes Lee & Nash Carter)
  • Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen
  • Jacket Time (Kushida & Ikemen Jiro)
  • Malik Blade & Edris Enofe
  • The Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake)
  • Chase U (Andre Chase & Bodhi Hayward)
  • Legado del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde)
  • The Creed Brothers (Julius & Brutus Creed)

The bracket for the Dusty Classic has yet to be announced. The tournament will kick off on this Tuesday’s episode of NXT.

MSK are looking to repeat as Dusty Classic winners. They lost the NXT Tag Team titles to Imperium at Halloween Havoc last October.

Finn Balor & Samoa Joe, The Authors of Pain, Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, Aleister Black & Ricochet, and Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne have also won the men’s Dusty Classic in previous years.

Blade & Enofe qualified for the Dusty Classic by defeating Joe Gacy & Harland by disqualification on the most recent episode of NXT. Harland got disqualified for not obeying the referee’s five count as he was attacking Blade in the corner.

The women’s Dusty Classic is also returning for 2022. That tournament will begin in February.
