Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bobby Roode set for NXT TakeOver: San Antonio

The next NXT: TakeOver special officially has its main event.

Bobby Roode will challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the NXT Championship over Royal Rumble weekend at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio. In a match that aired on Wednesday night’s episode of NXT TV, Roode won a fatal four-way against Roderick Strong, Tye Dillinger, and Andrade “Cien” Almas to earn the title shot. Roode last eliminated Dillinger to win the match.

That four-way was taped on November 30th, which was before Nakamura reclaimed the NXT title in his home country of Japan by defeating Samoa Joe at a live event in Osaka. Nakamura then retained his title against Joe in a cage match in Melbourne, Australia. Both of those matches later aired on TV.

Nakamura vs. Roode is the second match announced for TakeOver: San Antonio, with the Authors of Pain also scheduled to challenge for the tag titles. The show will take place on Saturday, January 28th at the Freeman Coliseum prior to the Royal Rumble being held at the Alamodome the next night.

WWE NXT results: A fatal four-way decides the new number one contender

The Big News: Bobby Roode became the number one contender to the NXT Championship as he won the fatal four-way elimination main event.

The Medium News: Billie Kay and Peyton Royce have a death wish, as they made a challenge to Asuka.

The Little Beaver Sized News: Nikki Cross also has one, as she laughed at Asuka during an interview.

*********

Billie Kay defeated Daria Berenato

We started things off in the ring with Billie Kay going one-on-one with Daria Berenato, formerly of Tough Enough. Kay and Peyton Royce had previously asked Berenato to be their partner in a six-woman tag, but then walked out on her during the match.

The story of this match was that Kay did not stand a chance in a singles bout with Berenato. Berenato beat her inside and outside the ring and all over the ringside area. However, Royce rammed Berenato into the ring apron and Kay won with the running boot to the face.

After the match, both Kay and Royce issued a challenge to Asuka.

*********

The Authors of Pain defeated John Oregon & Anthony Owens via ref stoppage

Akam and Rezar completely destroyed Owens. Oregon, who was standing on the apron, tried leaving, but was intimidated back into the ring and destroyed. The AoP did the move where they pick both men up in a powerbomb and slam them together. After throwing them on top of each other, Akam and Rezar went for their finish, but the ref stepped in and called the match.

Paul Ellering then announced that all roads lead to San Antonio. They don’t care if it is DIY or The Revival, the Authors of Pain are on a seek and destroy mission to become the next NXT Tag Team Champions.

*********

Asuka cut a promo and said Peyton Royce and Billie Kay need to be careful because they are no competition to her. Nikki Cross was shown off to the side of the stage laughing at the champ.

*********

Up next was a video package recapping how all four men made it into tonight’s main event.

Bobby Roode defeated Tye Dillinger, Andrade “Cien” Almas, and Roderick Strong in a fatal four-way elimination match to become the new number one contender for the NXT Championship

It was announced before the match started that the winner would get their title shot against Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio. Corey Graves did the Bobby Heenan gimmick and picked everyone to win the match. The match began at 8:30, which gave them a lot more time than the usual NXT TV main event.

The first hot move of the match was Almas laying out both Dillinger and Strong in the middle of the ring. Almas went for a top rope moonsault, but both men rolled out of the way. However, Almas landed on his feet and went immediately for a standing moonsault on Strong, but he got his knees up.

Everyone was going for covers as soon as they could. Strong knocked Roode out of the ring, where Almas and Dillinger already were, and did a twisting dive over the top onto all three men. Back in the ring, Roode tried to roll-up Strong with his feet on the ropes, but the referee wouldn’t count despite their being no disqualifications.

We got the stacked up superplex, with Dillinger being the man powerbombing the pile. Almas hit his corner knees, but when he dragged Dillinger into the middle, Strong hit a Sick Kick on Almas for the pin.

Strong and Dillinger worked really well together, while Roode caught a breather on the floor. After a fun two minutes, Dillinger hit the Tye Breaker out of nowhere for the pin on Strong.

Then there were two. The two men who faced off at NXT TakeOver: Toronto were now facing off one more time with a shot at the championship on the line.

Dillinger looked good here, hitting one great move after another and getting several near falls. However, Roode took his head off with a clothesline. Roode went outside and grabbed a chair, but as he approached his foe, Dillinger nailed a superkick! Roode kicked out after Dillinger made the cover.

Dillinger went for another Tye Breaker, but Roode got out and hit a spinebuster. Roode went for the Impaler DDT, but Dillinger got out and hit the Tye Breaker! Dillinger made the cover yet again, and Roode kicked out again. Dillinger went for a third Tye Breaker, but Roode slipped out and deposited Dillinger groin-first on the corner. Dillinger fell down and Roode became the number one contender with the impaler DDT!

It has happened and now, five weeks from this Saturday at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio, Shinsuke Nakamura will defend the NXT Championship against Bobby Roode! We are on the road to Takeover, what will happen next week? Until then, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays!

NXT Las Vegas, NV, live results: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bobby Roode

Submitted by reader Mike Trask

– No Way Jose defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas

Weak opener. The crowd was somewhat into Jose’s music.

– Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli defeated Oney Lorcan & Patrick Clark

– Liv Morgan defeated Aliyah

Very cool spots where they were locked in small packages rolling around the ring. The match surpassed expectations.

– NXT Tag Team Champions DIY defeated The Revival

Ciampa tapped one of them out with an armbar to get the victory. Best match of the night.

– Tye Dillinger defeated Elias Samson

As you’d expect, the “10” chant was over. Wesley Blake came out after and called everyone garbage. That led into the next match.

– Tye Dillinger defeated Wesley Blake

This was immediate defeat for Blake.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Ember Moon

– Samoa Joe came out. He said he can’t compete tonight but was some kind of enforcer in the main event.

– NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Bobby Roode

There was some interference from Joe, but it was a cool match. Nakamura is amazing.

NXT Canberra, Australia, live results: Nakamura & Dillinger vs. Joe & Roode

Image: WWE Australia. Results submitted by reader Greg Delaney.

– TM61 defeated The Revival

– Patrick Clark defeated Wesley Blake

– Ember Moon defeated Aliyah with the top rope stunner.

– Buddy Murphy defeated Akira Tozawa

This was the best match of the night. It started with some sportsmanship over a handshake but turned into a hard-hitting match with plenty of strikes and suplexes. It was the only thing all night to get a “This is awesome” chant.

– NXT Tag Team Champions DIY defeated Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss

The heels still need some polishing but DIY carried them to the second best match of the show.

– William Regal came out for a quick speech.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka & Liv Morgan defeated Peyton Royce & Billie Kay

For whatever reason, the Aussies were the heels. Royce and Kay showed way more charisma here than they ever have on TV. Royce grabbed her left knee after the match and was helped to the back by the ref and Kay. I’m not sure if she was just selling or not though.

– Oney Lorcan defeated Elias Samson

There were shenanigans with The Drifter’s guitar and Lorcan rolled him up for the pin.

-NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura & Tye Dillinger defeated Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode

Nakamura pinned Roode. The main event was good, but no one wanted to boo any of the guys. It’s amazing how great Joe is live.

NXT Bakersfield, CA, live results: Nakamura vs. Bobby Roode

Submitted by reader Steven Cash from the Rabobank Theater

– Roderick Strong beat Patrick Clark and Oney Lorcan when Strong pinned Clark following the Sick Kick

All three worked hard in a strong opening bout that included a Tower of Doom spot and a dive from Lorcan. Strong looked far and above the best en route to victory.

– Daria Berenato & Aliyah beat Billie Kay & Peyton Royce when Daria pinned Royce following a spinebuster

Kay and Royce spent most of the match working over the smaller Aliyah while she played babyface in peril. Daria cleaned house after a hot tag and pinned Royce with a modified spinebuster slam.

– Tye Dillinger beat Buddy Murphy with the Tye-Breaker

Murphy cut a promo before the match claiming to be the better man between he and his former tag team partner Wesley Blake. A lot of “10!” spots and chants.

– William Regal appeared following intermission to thank the crowd and put over the talent. Austin Aries came out and cut a promo on Bakersfield, calling it a “B Town.” He compared the town to No Way Jose, which led to…

– Samoa Joe beat No Way Jose via submission with the Kokina Clutch

Short, but solid match.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka beat Mandy Rose with a Terry Funk rolling cradle into the Asuka Lock to retain

Outside of some minor offense, this was largely a showcase for Asuka.

– NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura def. Bobby Roode with the Kinshasa

This was originally advertised to be a six-man tag between TM61/Shinsuke and The Authors of Pain/Joe. There was a 50/50 split cheers-wise between Roode and Nakamura for their entrances. Shinsuke won with a second rope Kinshasa followed by a second Kinshasa. Joe attacked Shinsuke after the match which brought out Dillinger for the save.

After he and Shinsuke cleared Joe and Roode from the ring, the two shared in Shinsuke’s traditional match-ending pose to close the show.

NXT Sacramento, CA, live results: Roderick Strong hits the road

Submitted by reader Ryan Rosenthal

– Patrick Clark def. Buddy Murphy

The fans reacted to Patrick like he was a star. The match didn’t have much to it and Patrick picked up the win, working as a face despite how he came off on the last NXT TV show.

– Aliyah & Daria Berenato def. Billie Kay & Peyton Royce

This was the worst match on the show, and the crowd didn’t react to them very much. Peyton and Billie were announced as “best friends”. Aliyah had good energy and picked up the win after hitting Trish Status’ finisher. She was announced as being from Toronto, Canada,

– Roderick Strong def. Oney Lorcan

This was the best in-ring match on the show by leaps and bounds. Most of the fans didn’t seem to know who Strong was. They worked a stiff, balanced and competitive match that went a good 15 minutes. They held the crowd’s interest and Roderick picked up the win with his Death by Roderick.

– Tye Dillinger def. Wesley Blake

Tye was very over with the crowd and they did a lot of comedy throughout the match. The crowd got on Blake throughout including chants of “do some sit-ups”. Tye made a comeback and hit the Tye-Breaker for the win. Fans loved him.

Intermission

– Bobby Roode def. No Way Jose

Fans absolutely loved both men, dancing for No Way and soaking up the “Glorious” theme for Bobby. Roode took the mic and had his theme played a 2nd time to the fans’ delight. They asked for one more time to which he grabbed the mic and said no. Most of the match was comedy, Roode and the ref dancing, Jose mocked Bobby and took most of the match before Roode eventually hit the spinbuster and DDT combo for the win. Not an excellent in-ring match, but definitely the most fun of the night.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka def Mandy Rose to retain

Asuka took her time with Rose, and did some comedy centered around Rose not wanting to get hit in the face, so, of course, Asuka focused on her face. Eventually, they did a variety of rolls at the end on the ground that transitioned to the chicken-wing for the submission.

– Samoa Joe & The Authors of Pain (w/Paul Ellering) def. NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura & TM61

To no surprise, Nakamura was the biggest star with Joe also getting a big reaction. There was little reaction to both TM61 and the AOP. The bulk of the match was the tag teams doing the work. Whenever Joe or Nakamura was in, the crowd lit up and they were excellent. The finish came when the ref got distracted by Ellering, Joe gave a low blow to a TM61 member, locked in the Clutch and got the tap, much to the crowd’s surprise.

The heels tried to take out Shinsuke, which led to him making a 1 on 3 comeback and hitting the Kinshasa to send everyone home happy.

Austin Aries was scheduled to be on the card, but was pulled due to his injury from Wednesday night.

NXT Fort Pierce, FL, live results: Dillinger vs. Roode; Tian Bing in action

NXT was in Ft. Pierce in what was a makeup show due to Hurricane Matthew. There were an estimated 350 in attendance.

– Patrick Clark defeated Tian Bing

This was the NXT singles debut of Tian Bing, the former Bin Wang, who is billed as 6’3″ 220 lbs from China. Bing made his NXT debut at a recent house show in a battle royal, and made his TV debut in this week’s tapings in the Dusty Classic teaming with HoHo Lun.

Patrick Clark of Tough Enough fame has taken to a persona based on the late musician Prince, with a sparkling headband and frilly white shirt. The bizarre Clark was able to steal the win with his feet on the ropes.

– Peyton Royce & Billie Kay defeated Liv Morgan & Aliyah

Kay was able to cause a distraction that allowed Royce to score the pin on Morgan

– Dallas Harper defeated Steve Cutler

The 6’9″ Harper was able to slam Cutler from way up there for the win

– SAnitY (Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton) w/ Nikki Cross defeated Tucker Knight & Otis

Cross sprayed Otis in the eyes with a can of something to cause the distraction. Knight and Otis were able to fend off the beat down after the match, and even threw Nikki Cross on to Fulton and Wolfe over the top rope to send them packing

– Ember Moon defeated Mandy Rose

Top rope diving stunner by Moon for the win

– Elias Samson cut a promo but was interrupted by Asuka, who Samson tried to imply has eyes for him. Asuka actually broke his guitar after Samson tried to lay a kiss on her.

– Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss defeated Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford

– Tye Dillinger defeated Boddy Roode

Dillinger hit the Tye Breaker for the win to send everyone home happy.

NXT Bel Air, MD, live results: Cedric Alexander vs. Bobby Roode steals the show

Submitted by Liam Renner & Scott O’Donovan from the APG Federal Credit Union Arena

– Lince Dorado defeated Blake with a shooting star press.

Blake is now doing a Rick Rude-type gimmick and got a lot of Matt Hardy “Delete” chants coming out. Solid match that had some fan interaction that included a “We Want Murphy” chant. Dorado won with his 360 splash from the top rope.

– Liv Morgan defeated Aliyah

They kept it simple. Morgan wore black and orange (Orioles colors) so she was the babyface despite crowd not knowing much about either. Started slow but picked up midway through. A great series of near fall counters that saw both women rolling around the ring for about 10 seconds picking up 1-counts over and over on each other. Crowd came alive during that portion of the match. Morgan won with her finisher and got a decent reaction.

– The Authors of Pain defeated TM61

Crowd wasn’t very interested in this one. TM61 did fight back after the finish and stood tall, which got a nice reaction. Sluggish and boring throughout. Mostly Authors of Pain working over a member of TM61 for before a hot tag, brief back and forth and finally the Authors of Pain winning. TM61 cleaned house after the match after the Authors of Pain tries to continue the punishment.

– No Way Jose defeated Elias Samson

Mostly a comedy match. Jose was massively over. Samson sang a song about how the town of Bel Air and its people suck. The Drifter entered first, cut a promo threatening not to sing his song. As the crowd cheered that he wasn’t going to sing, he paused, looked into the audience and said “I see you kid, you want to see me sing and I won’t let you down” before being booed terribly and signing a song about how Baltimore sucked.

Jose came out to a loud ovation and dancing by most of the crowd. Quick match with some hard hitting portions, Jose won in the end and danced his way to the back.

– Bobby Roode defeated Cedric Alexander in a great match.

Alexander came out to a great ovation and Roode’s blew the roof off the place. Great back and forth action, great showmanship and spots. At one point, Roode kicked Alexander’s legs out from under him while on the top rope, Cedric bounced off the top rope and went head first to the mat leaving the crowd gasping but the match would continue without pause. Many near falls but in the end Roode would use a low blow and ref distraction to help him hit his finishing DDT variation for the win. The crowd dueled “Lets go Cedric! Bobby Roode!” chants throughout and in the end Roode both guys received a standing ovation after the match.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Peyton Royce with the Asuka Lock in a pretty basic match.

Royce entered to “Asuka’s gonna kill you” chants. Asuka received a very warm reaction from the crowd. Most of the match saw Royce beat down Asuka before finally Asuka started “hulking up”, smiled and unloaded a flurry over punches and kicks, followed by a brief exchange that saw her counter a clothesline to the Asuka lock for the submission victory.

– NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura & Tye Dillinger defeated Austin Aries & Samoa Joe in the main event.

Aries and Joe enter first, Joe got a loud ovation and “Joe” chants. Dillinger got a great pop and fans seemed to really be into him. Nakamura entered to his usual insane ovation. Dillinger and Aries started off, a great spot happened about a minute in that saw Dillinger taunt Aries with his “10” gimmick, Aries got up and challenged him to a arm strength test by holding up one hand that got a “5” chant from the crowd.

Dillinger and Aries would go back and forth “10”-“5”-“10”-“5” until Aries tried to trick the crowd by eventually holding up 10. Back and forth for a minute, followed by Dillinger getting worked over for a bit before Nakamura makes a hot tag, all 4 men brawl for a minute and Nakamura hits the Bomaye/Kinshasa for the win.

After the match, Nakamura and Dillinger would pose to cheers, Nakamura eventually took the mic, thanked the crowd, posed some more and went to the back to end a great night of action!

NXT Norfolk, VA, live results: Nakamura teams with Tye; Bobby Roode vs. Cedric Alexander

Submitted by reader Brian Whitehorst from The Consant Center

Crowd was rather light tonight for an NXT show, estimated somewhere between 1000-1500 people.

– Lince Dorado def. Wesley Blake in 7:45

Lots of comedy from Blake with some from Dorado. This was a Dorado showcase.

– Liv Morgan def. Aaliyah in just under 7 minutes

This crowd wasn’t into at first, but came around when the pace quickened.

– Authors of Pain def. TM61 in 8:41

Crowd kept chanting “D-Lo Brown” at AOP. It diidn’t seem like anyone was familiar with TMDK but they showed off some impressive work.

– No Way Jose def. Elias Samson in 10:10

Big pop for NWJ ollowing some heel mic work from Samson.

Intermission

– Bobby Roode def. Cedric Alexander in 13:44

Huge pop for Cedric as he was a surprise, but Roode also got a great reaction. This was the best match of the night with lots of Cedric offense and 2 counts. Roode won after he distracted the ref and low blowed Cedric when the ref couldn’t see it.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka def. Peyton Royce in 12 minutes

Asuka took this one, even though we got more Royce offense than expected.

– Tye Dillinger and NXT Champion Nakamura def. Samoa Joe and Austin Aries in 17 minutes

Nakamura hit the Kinshasa to Aries for the pin. Dillinger took most of the match leading up to the Nakamura hot tag. We didn’t get much of the champ in this match as he came out in a neckbrace selling a neck injury. Aries was in there mostly for his team.

WWE NXT results: Dusty Classic announcement; Itami vs. Dorado

The Big News: The second annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was announced and the show saw several teams state their intentions on becoming the tournament champion.

The Medium News: Samoa Joe finally lived up to his threat from last week, but what he did was attack two people you’ve never heard of before their first TV match.

The Little Beaver Sized News: Hideo Itami beat Lince Dorado in a very good main event.

*********

The show started with William Regal standing in an empty arena and announcing the second annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, with the finals being held at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. He also stated that the brackets will be released on Twitter and the first round matches will begin next week.

It is a 16-team tournament, won last year by Finn Balor and Samoa Joe, which was actually the start of their 10-month storyline.

*********

Tye Dillinger defeated Angelo Dawkins

We kick things off with the Perfect 10 facing Angelo Dawkins. Dawkins has lost the vast majority of his televised matches over the last few years, while Dillinger has gotten closer and closer to an actual winning streak lately.

Remember how I have been saying that I didn’t think people cared so much about Dillinger as much as they liked chanting 10? Well I may not be able to say that much longer, as the fans are starting to like him more and more. Dillinger picked up his second straight win with the Tye Breaker in a short bout.

Glorious! As Dillinger started walking away, out came the most glorious superstar in NXT history, Bobby Roode. He congratulated Dillinger, but said he’s not a 10 yet, however with the proper guidance he could be. He said the number one reason he came to NXT was to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. That seems like an odd reason.

The fans exploded, chanting “Glorious 10,” as they saw where this was going. Roode said he hasn’t made very many friends, but he needs the perfect partner for the tournament. Roode asked him to think about it since Dillinger was so close to Dusty Rhodes. Roode said it would be Perfectly Glorious, stuck his hand out, and Dillinger accepted!

*********

Hideo Itami was asked about his match later in the night against Lince Dorado. Itami said Dorado is a great fighter and has great heart, unlike Austin Aries. He called Aries a baby and a coward, saying he may need to put him to sleep again.

*********

The match between NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival and The Ealy Brothers never got started, as Samoa Joe stormed past The Revival and destroyed the twins by himself.

Joe took the mic and said the beatings will continue until William Regal’s decisiveness improves. In case you forgot, he is demanding either an immediate rematch with the injured NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura or for Mr. Regal to strip Nakamura of the championship and award it to Joe.

*********

Dan Matha is coming next week. Picture a bald Curt Hawkins’ head on Mason Ryan’s body. Even then I think Matha is more ripped.

*********

Ember Moon defeated Mandy Rose

Rose is from Tough Enough and is Corey Graves’ newest crush. The biggest positive of Eva Marie being called up was that Graves would stop acting like a 30-year-old Jerry Lawler, then we got Mandy Rose.

Rose punched Moon in the face, so Moon replied with some very hard kicks and a springboard crossbody. Rose did shake it off and hit a really nice bicycle knee to the face. Moon picked up the win with the top rope stunner.

*********

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa felt good about sending The Revival running away at the CWC live finale, but they have a checklist that needs to be finalized. They want to win the Dusty Rhodes Classic, since that is how they got into NXT last year. Also on the list is beating The Revival and winning the NXT Tag Team Championship.

*********

Sanity is coming. That’s good news.

*********

The Authors of Pain defeated Jesus Yurnett & Jonathan Cruise

It’s time for Akam and Rezar! Jesus Yurnett needed Jesus as The AoP just destroyed him and his partner. Rezar heaved Cruise out of the ring and pinned Yurnett with the side Russian legsweep/clothesline combo.

Paul Ellering finally got to speak! He said the first chapter began with the arrival, the next chapter will unleash a plethora of pain, and for now, that’s all we need to know. A small number of people randomly yelled “What?” and “You suck.”

*********

Regal had no update to give everyone regarding Nakamura’s health. He was about to talk about the teams in the Dusty Rhodes Classic (despite saying earlier he was going to later this week) when Blake and Murphy came in and began arguing with each other over whether or not they were a team again.

Regal sent them on their way and that was that.

*********

NXT Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Liv Morgan

Liv Morgan has been running her mouth the last few weeks and now Asuka is here to shut her up. After a dropkick from Morgan, Asuka took her down right away and made her tap out in the shortest match of the night.

After the match, Asuka declared that nobody is ready for her.

*********

Next week: Cedric Alexander & Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. The Revival in a Dusty Rhodes Classic match.

*********

Hideo Itami defeated Lince Dorado

This was a very good match, and Itami continues his streak of solid matches since he came back from injury. Dorado looked really good here as well. This match was a perfect blend of the two men’s respective styles.

At one point, Itami hit a top rope clothesline from more than halfway across the ring. Later, Itami teased the Go To Sleep and then held his fingers an inch apart.

Dorado missed a picture perfect shooting star press, and Itami hit the Yakuza kick and corner dropkick before hitting the GTS for the win!

Itami was celebrating his win when Aries ran in and attacked him. It took six weeks, but Aries is finally on the attack after Brooklyn! Itami reversed an Irish whip, and Aries grabbed the ropes and ran away again.

That does it for this week. Will Aries ever step up and face Itami? Will we find out next week? Only one way to know for sure, and until then remember to say your vitamins and take your prayers!

NXT TakeOver Brooklyn preview: NXT’s stars ready to tear the house down

NXT returns to Brooklyn this Saturday for ‘NXT TakeOver Brooklyn II: The One With The Terrible Chain Graphic’ (trademark: me). Poor graphic decisions aside, this is an absolutely stacked card. Every NXT title is on the line, it could be the last match in NXT for Bayley, Bobby Roode makes his in-ring debut, and Ember Moon has her official NXT debut. Combine those things with an always wound up Brooklyn crowd, and there is the definite potential for this to go down as one of the best NXT TakeOvers from top to bottom.

Here’s a look at the card.

Ember Moon vs. Billie Kay

The vignettes leading to Moon’s debut have been, well, they’ve been something. Your mileage may vary on the pseudo-supernatural vibe they have going on, but it’s something different and certainly worth seeing through. There are plenty of jokes about the quality of names NXT has been generating lately (Sup, Oney Lorcan?), but EMBER MOON has to be something that was left on the cutting room floor of Mortal Kombat names. Maybe she is Kitana and Mileena’s long lost cousin or something.

What the wrestler formerly known as Athena does have going for her is that she can really, really work and has an incredible finishing move (the O-face) that the Brooklyn crowd will absolutely explode for. Going back to MK, I wonder what kind bizarre Fatality-type name it will get. While ‘From The Ashes’ or ‘The Final Eclipse’ are up there, my fingers are crossed for ‘The Full Moon’. That’s not going to happen, but it sure is nice to dream.

For Kaye, she actually looks like, and dresses similarly, to Kitana. Everything really is lining up for my WWE/Mortal Kombat crossover I’ve been working on so tirelessly including writing this section before Kaye was officially announced as her opponent.

No Way Jose vs. Austin Aries

NXT’s resident fruit aficionado might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s done a good job of getting himself over as a face and drawing more out of his character. Leading up to his program with ‘The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived’, Jose was just a happy dancing guy who sometimes did baseball moves. This is also known as the most NXT gimmick of all time.

If you look at the NXT talent that found early success on the main roster, their characters were, and this is almost silly to say when writing about pro wrestling, grounded in reality. Sami Zayn, scrappy, resilient, underdog who never gives up….and is really good at wrestling. Kevin Owens, mouthy, self entitled, man who fights for his family…and is really good at wrestling. Rusev is a bit more than the stereotypical foreign heel in that he really loves his wife, fights to defend her honor (which is somehow ‘bad’)…and is really good at wrestling. Tyler Breeze is really good at wrestling, but his gimmick did him absolutely no favors.

It’s been proven that some of the stuff they try in NXT will just die on the vine up on the main roster. I guess time will tell with Jose, but nothing about this gimmick or this program screams main roster success to me.

For what it’s worth, doesn’t it feel like Roode and Aries should switch opponents this weekend? No Way Jose gets enough positive reactions that he could overcome the love that Roode surely will get, and Aries can generate enough heat on himself to help Almas get over. Anyway, as it currently stands, this match doesn’t really move the needle, and it’s fair to wonder where both these guys go coming out of this TakeOver.

Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Bobby Roode

This has the potential to be a bit awkward. There is almost no chance that Roode gets a negative reaction in this match (at least to start), and that, as far as I can tell, is the exact opposite of what WWE wants to happen. A large part of that is because Almas’ character is just so bland: bologna-on-Wonder-Bread-with-a-touch-of-yellow-mustard-bland. Up to this point his character can be boiled down to ‘super handsome dude who sometimes wears weird suspenders’. He has received little to no reaction since his debut, which is a real shame because the former La Sombra has all the talent in the world necessary to succeed.

On the other hand, Roode debuted and had a character within 10 minutes. He walked to the ring, cut a promo, and immediately established his character, his desires, and his motivation for being in NXT. This doesn’t even mention his theme song, which by itself is more over than 80% of the roster. This whole match, that incidentally has had no build, raises quite a few questions. Does Roode really lose his TakeOver debut match? Does Almas really go over, and does he get no reaction from the crowd? Do they really think his hammerlock DDT finisher is a real thing? Most importantly, are any of us ready for the GLORIOUS nature of Bobby Roode in NXT?

NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival vs. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa

Has The Revival had a bad match since they became prominent players on NXT? I would argue that they haven’t, and quietly become one of the best parts of NXT. They are the ultimate foils for the babyface teams like American Alpha, Enzo and Cass, as well as their TakeOver opponents Gargano and Ciampa. The Revival is exactly what they claim to be: old school, hard-hitting tag team wrestlers. They are also perfect and wonderful and this should make you treasure them like the pitch-perfect wrestlers they are.

What makes this match so great is that Gargano and Ciampa are also wonderful, but not quite as perfect. One team is going to hit the other team really hard, the other team is ALSO going to hit the other team really hard, with just a few more leg slaps. This is good! This is fine! This is great! The best part about a tag match is when the teams do different things well, but are trying to get to the same place. The Revival will try and wear you out, slow the match down, and ultimately take you out.

Gargano and Ciampa will try to chain moves and strikes together as fast as possible, and ultimately knock you out. This will be the biggest showcase for Gargano/Ciampa as a team as they both had their official ‘coming out’ moment with their match against each other during the first round of the CWC.

With The Authors of Pain and TM61, NXT’s tag division is getting fairly deep, and that doesn’t even include a possible reunion of the #DirtyHeels (Roode/Aries). This could be a good spot for a title change, because it sure feels like SmackDown could use a team like The Revival considering that its’ tag division is American Alpha, and a bunch of teams that aren’t American Alpha.

Look at who participated in the 12-man match from Tuesday that weren’t AA: The Usos, The Hype Bros, The Vaudevillians, Breezango, and the Ascension. That…doesn’t exactly scream excitement. If they really want to have a second set of belts for the blue brand, the quality of teams needs to really improve. Give me an extended feud between AA and The Revival on national television. I don’t need any amount of Hype in my life, in any capacity, ever.

NXT Women’s Champion Asuka vs. Bayley

Unpopular Internet opinion: I don’t love Bayley, I’m not even sure if I like her at this point. I fundamentally understand what makes her work, what makes her so captivating, and why so many people love her. I really do. A large part of why I feel this way is because she has just been in NXT for so, so long, and has done everything she possibly could there. Part of what makes wrestling so great is getting to see characters evolve and improve. Bayley did that and now it’s time for her to do it somewhere that’s not Full Sail. If this is her swan song, what better place than Brooklyn — the place where she and Sasha Banks blew the roof off the building a year ago — for her to go out?

And oh boy, is she going to go out with a bang. There really has never been someone like Asuka in the WWE. The women they usually book as these near-unbeatable monsters are more physically imposing (re: Nia Jax, Kharma) than Asuka. Asuka doesn’t inspire fear because of her size; she inspires fear because of who she is. There is a reason that, in a previous life, she earned the nickname ‘Most Dangerous’.

WWE is in a weird and surreal place where two of their best performers are not only Japanese wrestlers who can cut a ‘promo’ with their faces and actions, but are completely running with it. When is the last time a foreign wrestler, let alone a female Asian wrestler, was presented in the dominant way Asuka is? She and Nakamura are two shining examples of WWE getting away from trying to fit every wrestler into the ‘superstar’ shaped hole that they tried to do for so many years.

This match should, with almost no doubt, be excellent. These two told a great story WrestleMania weekend in Dallas, and are in just as good a position to do the same this Saturday. Hopefully, The Empress of Tomorrow can give Bayley her final (and much deserved) hug in NXT…in the form of an Asuka Lock.

NXT Champion Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Hyperbole aside, this match has the potential to be one of the best matches in NXT history. All of Nakamura’s matches are complete spectacles and feel like a special event, not at all unlike a Brock Lesnar match at this point. Much like a Lesnar match doesn’t need a traditional build, neither do Nakamura’s as each match feels like a dream match. Credit goes to WWE by letting Nakamura just be Nakamura and allowing his innate, strange, weird, bizarre, incredible, and utterly captivating charisma just ooze through the screen.

His presence makes everything, and everyone, around him feel bigger. The man is just a master professional wrestler, full stop. He is a genuine top-tier, world-class talent, and, honestly, has no business spending any more time in NXT.

If this feels like someone singing the praises of Nakamura as opposed to a match preview, you’re partially right. But it would be an absolute travesty not to talk about how incredible Samoa Joe has been over the past year in NXT. Kevin Owens recently said that NXT wouldn’t be where it is without Finn Balor, and by and large, he’s correct. But Joe has made the title mean more, and feel more important over the course of his short reign, compared to what Finn did over his far more lengthy tenure.

Where Finn’s matches, and by no means is this intended to be a slight, could sometimes feel like build-ups to a reveal of ‘the Demon King’ with the title just kind of serving as a prop, Joe’s feel different. They have the feel of a man motivated to prove that he is the best, that he deserves what he’s earned — and will do anything to keep it. A motivated Joe on a big stage against one of the best big stage performers of the past 5-10 years? This has all the makings of an absolute classic.

With all that said, Joe retains but not cleanly, right? Nakamura needs to be on the main roster as soon as possible, leaving Joe to be the NXT monster that they haven’t had in some time.

WWE NXT results: Shinsuke Nakamura taunts Samoa Joe

The Big News: Shinsuke Nakamura taunted Samoa Joe and faked taking the champion’s nose while Joe was angrily trying to go through a dozen security guards to get to Nakamura.

The Medium News: Bayley and Asuka put pen to paper to make their NXT Women’s Championship match at TakeOver official.

The Little Beaver Sized News: Bobby Roode’s in-ring debut, a tag team title match, and No Way Jose vs. Austin Aries were made official for TakeOver.

*********

Moments before the show began, Bobby Roode walked into William Regal’s office. They shook hands and went their separate ways before Roode rubbed his hands together and said this would be great.

*********

On the other side of the credits, Mr. Regal was standing mid-ring to oversee a contract signing between NXT Women’s Champion Asuka and Bayley. Asuka defeated Bayley for the title in Dallas, and the rematch will test if Bayley can climb that mountain one more time.

Bayley brought up that she has faced every woman that has walked in the door for the last three-plus years and she was always the underdog until last year when she won the title in Brooklyn. She said if Brooklyn was a dream, Dallas was a nightmare.

She said she was not prepared for how tough Dallas would be, but she is prepared now. The Asuka mystique is gone for her, and she plans on beating Asuka in NXT’s return to Brooklyn for the belt.

Asuka said that she respects Bayley, but told her opponent she doesn’t have what it takes to win. Asuka extended her hand but Bayley would not shake it, instead telling her to sign the contract and be ready for the fight of her life.

After signing the contract, the two women went face-to-face, with Asuka holding the seven pounds of silver and purple aloft before walking away.

The Authors of Pain defeated Nails & Ryzin

For those of us keeping count, The Authors of Pain go into this match with a 3-0 record in NXT, they’ve been on TV for 63 days, and still do not have names. At least this week their opponents have names, albeit last names only. Ryzin got pinned with the combination leg sweep/clothesline in less than a minute.

The Authors of Pain were about to beat up Nails some more when TM61 randomly ran in for the save before being killed to death in a confrontation that didn’t even last as long as the match.

*********

Shinsuke Nakamura told Cathy Kelley that he is not hard to find, but he’ll find Samoa Joe when he wants to.

*********

Andrade “Cien” Almas defeated Angelo Dawkins

Andrade Almas is back for his third match and the crowd is still completely indifferent to him. Angelo Dawkins hasn’t been around in a while and is most fondly remembered for always wearing two headbands.

Dawkins did a 360 degree turn while splashing Almas in the corner, and despite being the heel, the fans were ever so slightly more into Dawkins. Almas won with a hammerlock DDT.

GLORIOUS! The greatest theme in NXT history prefaced Bobby Roode’s entrance into the arena. Roode came out and applauded for Almas, congratulating him on having the honor of facing Roode at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

Roode then mocked Almas by talking slowly because Almas didn’t understand English. He told Almas that no one in the arena will be paying to see him, they are paying to see Bobby Roode.

*********

Austin Aries was talking about oranges in Regal’s office, before saying NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II is not special because The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived doesn’t have a match. Regal mockingly agreed with him and booked him in a match with No Way Jose at the show.

*********

Billie Kay defeated Liv Morgan

Billie Kay is making a career off the time she did a three-minute job against Dana Brooke on SmackDown. Liv Morgan is back for the first time in a couple months, causing Corey Graves to flip out about New Jersey.

Both women looked good here but have a long way to go. Morgan is very enthusiastic, which can be good. Kay won her second match in a row with a big boot.

*********

Rich Swann, Noam Dar, and Jack Gallagher (the greatest wrestler ever) were shown at ringside. Graves and Tom Phillips talked about how the first round was still going on before they showed highlights of Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa, which was actually the last first round match.

This led to Gargano and Ciampa meeting with Regal. He put over their match last week before informing them they are challenging The Revival for the NXT Tag Team Championship at TakeOver.

Gargano and Ciampa vowed to become champions in Brooklyn.

*********

Ember Moon is debuting at TakeOver.

*********

Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa defeated Tucker Knight & Patrick Clark

One year ago, Gargano and Ciampa debuted in NXT during the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. And one year ago, Patrick Clark was on Tough Enough.

This was more competitive than most squash matches. Tucker Knight is a fast man for being close to 300 pounds and has potential. The number one contenders picked up the win with the double kick to Knight.

*********

Mojo Rawley was hyping himself up for the main event, saying he’s bringing the fight right to Samoa Joe.

*********

NXT Champion Samoa Joe defeated Mojo Rawley

Mojo Rawley is angry about being laid out by Samoa Joe last week, so he charged at Joe to start the match. They exchanged headbutts on the floor and both men no-sold it. For the first minute, this was the most intense (in a good way) I have ever seen Rawley.

Unfortunately for Rawley, the match went longer than one minute. Joe beat him down hard. Rawley hit a full nelson slam, but he was mostly at Joe’s mercy here. Joe screamed Nakamura’s name as he slapped on the Coquina Clutch for the submission win.

After the match, Joe put the clutch back on and screamed for Nakamura until his music played. Nakamura walked down the ramp, but a dozen security guards got between them to hold Joe back. Nakamura was content with taunting Joe while he tried to fight through security to get to the King of Strong Style.

Nakamura faked taking Joe’s nose and then slapped him in the head as the show went off the air.

We are just one week away from TakeOver, and until next week’s go-home show, thank you for reading and remember to say your vitamins and take your prayers!

Three matches set for NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II

On Wednesday night’s episode of NXT television, three matches were made official for NXT’s upcoming return to Brooklyn.

After making his first appearance on NXT TV last week, Bobby Roode will compete in his first televised match for the brand against Andrade “Cien” Almas at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

Roode had been shown on camera at the last two TakeOver specials and has extensively worked the NXT live event circuit, but TakeOver will be his first real chance to show what he can do inside of a WWE ring.

It was also made official that The Revival will defend their NXT Tag Team Championship against the team of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa in Brooklyn. The two teams have been going at it for a while, with Gargano and Ciampa owning a victory over the champions from earlier this year.

And the show will see the TakeOver debut of No Way Jose as he takes on Austin Aries.

NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II will take place on August 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The updated card is:

  • NXT Champion Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura in a title match
  • NXT Women’s Champion Asuka vs. Bayley in a title match
  • Bobby Roode vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas
  • NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival vs. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa in a title match
  • Austin Aries vs. No Way Jose
  • Ember Moon’s debut

NXT New Orleans, LA, live results: Nakamura & Andrade Almas vs. Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode

Submitted by Lionel Williams from the New Orleans Convention Center

– No Way Jose def. Riddick Moss

Decent opener. Crowd didn’t care about Moss until he got on the mic and told “Baton Rouge” to stop booing him. Jose won with a baseball punch and full nelson slam.

– Ember Moon def. Daria Berenato

Match was a lot of ground and pound, since Daria has a MMA fighter gimmick. Crowd lost their mind at the finish where Ember won with a spinning stunner off the top rope. It sounds absurd, but it looks awesome live.

– Oney Lorcan def. Murphy

Murphy’s new music is just the theme song from the old Comedy Central show “Kroll Show”. Very fun match. Oney kept putting on headlocks, and the crowd popped more for it as the match went on. Oney won when Murphy tapped out to a headlock which got a huge reaction.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka def. Billie Kay

Match was decent, but nowhere near Asuka’s best. No one was into Billie Kay. Couple guys were chanting for Bayley, who was working an NXT show in Florida tonight. Asuka won with a big kick.

– NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival def. Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa

Match of the night by far. Crowd was huge into Gargano and Ciampa. They had the crowd believing that the titles would switch. After a few nearfalls, Dash pinned Gargano with a rollup with the tights.

– Austin Aries def Mojo Rawley

Crowd was dead for this one. Mojo eventually got them to say that Aries wasn’t hype. Aries won with the Last Chancery.

– Shinsuke Nakamura & Andrade Almas vs. NXT Champion Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode

Huge pops for both Nakamura and Joe. Andrade lost the hat, which is a bit of an upgrade. Good match. Nakamura won with a Kinshasa on Roode.

NXT Birmingham, AL, live results: Nakamura & Almas vs. Joe & Roode

Submitted by Robert Sce and Nick Bishop from the BJCC Theater.

The building wasn’t sold out by any stretch.

– No Way Jose defeated Riddick Moss

Good match and solid heel work from Moss. Jose won with the wind-up punch followed by a Cobra Clutch slam.

– Ember Moon defeated Daria Berenato

Slow match until the finish. Berenato worked the ground with body scissors for a while, but Moon won with a diving stunner off the top rope.

– Oney Lorcan defeated Buddy Murphy

Lorcan with a plethora of headlocks, causing a “Headlock City” chant. Murphy responded with a series of chinlocks. Lorcan won with a running, spinning forearm/uppercut.

– Mojo Rawley defeated Austin Aries

Sloppy match at times. Aries got caught trying to get a dirty pin using the ropes. Rawley won with a running punch in the corner.

– Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa defeated NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival by DQ

Revival retained the tag titles. This was the match of the night.

– NXT Women’s Champion Asuka defeated Billie Kay to retain her title.

Good match. Asuka won with a kick to the head.

– Shinsuke Nakamura & Andrade “Cien” Almas defeated NXT Champion Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode

Good back and forth match. Roode took the pin after Nakamura hit the Kinshasa.
