Report: Robert Roode to work as producer at WWE SummerSlam

Robert Roode is reportedly in Detroit for WWE SummerSlam.

According to a report from PWInsider, the 47-year-old is set to work as a producer backstage at the show. He is also expected to work Monday’s Raw taping from Minneapolis in the same role. However, it is not clear if this is a tryout or the start of a permanent position for him.

Roode underwent two spinal surgeries in a five-month span recently. He had fusion surgery on his C5 and C6 vertebrae last December and had the same procedure done for his C4 and C5 vertebrae in May. Roode hasn’t wrestled in over a year. His last match took place on a house show from Amarillo, Texas on June 25, 2022, where he lost to Omos.

PWInsider is also reporting that Randy Orton is in Detroit for SummerSlam, although it is not clear if he will be involved in the show at all. The 43-year-old hasn’t wrestled since May 20, 2022, when RK-Bro lost the Raw tag titles to The Usos.

WWE’s Robert Roode undergoes second spinal fusion surgery

Robert Roode is back on the road to recovery after undergoing a second spinal fusion surgery.

Roode revealed in an Instagram post that he had cervical fusion surgery done on his C4 and C5 vertebrae. The surgery took place on Thursday, which was Roode’s 47th birthday.

This comes five months after Roode had cervical fusion surgery on his C5 and C6 vertebrae.

In his Instagram post on Friday, Roode stated that the surgery was a success and thanked the staff at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Roode also thanked his partner Deneane for her support through what has been a challenging year for him.

Another trip around the sun and another trip to Birmingham Alabama.

Quite a way to celebrate my birthday lol. Had a C4/5 cervical fusion to go along with the C5/6 fusion back in November.

Most importantly it was a success thanks to the man himself Dr Andy Cordover and the first class staff here at @andrews_sports_medicine

Big thank you @deneane__17 for being my rock throughout this entire process. It’s been a challenging year to say the least

Road to recovery part 2!

Roode has been out of action since June 2022. He hasn’t wrestled on television since appearing as an entrant in the 2022 Andre the Giant Battle Royal.

WWE’s Robert Roode undergoes spinal fusion surgery

WWE’s Robert Roode has undergone spinal fusion surgery.

Roode, who has been out of action since June of this year, announced on his Instagram account Friday that he has had surgery on his cervical spine fusing the C5/C6 vertebrae.

According to Johns Hopkins medicine, the “ACDF procedure is performed to treat a damaged disc in the neck area of the spine.”

The Mayo Clinic describes different types of spinal fusion, and Roode appears to have undergone a fusion through an incision in the front of the neck.

Dr. Andy Cordover of the renowned Andrews Sports Medicine team in Birmingham, Alabama performed the surgery.

Roode posted:

Big thank you to Dr Andy Cordover and his amazing staff at @andrews_sports_medicine and St Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham Alabama

C5/6 fusion is complete. Now the work begins.

Recovery and Rehabilitation.

Looking forward to the challenge

Thanks @deneane__17 ❤️
You’re the best.

Roode has been on WWE’s main roster since 2017. He signed with the company in 2016 and had a run on the NXT brand in 2016-2017, including holding the NXT Championship for 200-plus days. Roode’s main roster title history includes two Raw Tag Team title reigns, a SmackDown tag team title reign, and a United States Championship reign.

Prior to his WWE run, Roode was an Impact Wrestling/TNA mainstay, holding Tag Team titles in that promotion six times, as well as two reigns with the TNA World title.

WWE’s Robert Roode hoping he had ‘successful trip’ to orthopaedic office

Former WWE Raw Tag Team Champion Robert Roode has been out of action since late-June and on Thursday, he somewhat revealed one of the reasons why.

Roode took to Instagram to share a picture of Southlake Orthopaedics in Birmingham, Alabama, thanking them and Andrews Sports Medicine for taking great care of him this week and that he was heading home “after what is hoped to be a successful trip.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CjGTU91rpqT

Roode didn’t go into details about what his apparent injury is and what, if any, procedure was done this week.

The 45-year-old last wrestled on a June 25th house show against Omos. It was one of eight house show events he worked from May 21st through June 25th, all but one against Veer Mahaan.

His last TV match was at the April 1st SmackDown prior to WrestleMania as an entrant in the Andre The Giant memorial battle royal. After that appearance, he was out of action until the aforementioned May 21st house show match.

WWE SmackDown notes: Bellas to appear, eight-man tag announced

Nikki & Brie Bella are returning to WWE television on this week’s episode of SmackDown.

WWE has announced that The Bellas will be Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross’ guests for a Moment of Bliss segment on this Friday’s SmackDown. Dave Meltzer confirmed last week that The Bellas are scheduled to be part of this year’s WWE Hall of Fame class, though the official announcement of that has yet to be made.

Nikki & Brie revealed last month that they’re both pregnant and expecting babies later this year.

Season five of Total Bellas will premiere on E! at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, April 9.

An eight-man tag match has also been added to this week’s SmackDown. The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) will team with The Usos against The Miz, John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode.

New Day are defending their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Miz & Morrison at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia next Thursday (February 27).

This week’s SmackDown is taking place at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Goldberg will appear on the episode to continue the build to him challenging “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship at Super ShowDown.

Carmella and Naomi will face off on SmackDown to determine who will challenge for Bayley’s SmackDown Women’s Championship at Super ShowDown. There will also be a sit-down interview with Lacey Evans on the episode.

Triple threat Raw Tag Team title match official for WWE Fastlane

After it was set up on last night’s Raw, WWE has announced a triple threat Tag Team title match for Fastlane.

Raw Tag Team Champions The Revival will defend their titles against Ricochet & Aleister Black and Bobby Roode & Chad Gable at Sunday’s pay-per-view. Ricochet & Black challenged for The Revival’s titles on Raw last night, with Roode & Gable attacking The Revival and causing the match to end in a disqualification.

Ricochet & Black and Roode & Gable went face-to-face and argued after the DQ, and Ricochet & Black stood tall after a brief brawl.

Ricochet & Black vs. Cesaro & Sheamus has also been announced for tonight’s SmackDown.

Fastlane is taking place at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday. Here’s the updated card:

  • WWE Champion Daniel Bryan defending against Kevin Owens
  • Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair (if Lynch wins, she’ll be added to the Raw Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania)
  • The Shield (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose) vs. Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre & Bobby Lashley
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos defending against Shane McMahon & The Miz
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Sasha Banks & Bayley defending against Nia Jax & Tamina
  • SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka defending against Mandy Rose
  • Raw Tag Team Champions The Revival defending against Ricochet & Aleister Black and Bobby Roode & Chad Gable in a triple threat match

The Revival win Tag Team titles on WWE Raw

After several attempts, the Revival are now the new Raw tag team champions.

Securing another title shot last week, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder pinned champions Bobby Roode and Chad Gable to win the titles for the first time. The finish had Gable going for a crossbody off the middle rope, but the Revival countered and hit the Shatter Machine, allowing them to pick up the win.

Roode and Gable had held the titles for 64 days, defeating AOP back on the December 10 edition of Raw.

After the match, Charly Caruso interviewed the new champions, where they reiterated that they were top guys.

The win comes after a number of previous attempts to win the titles in the last couple of months, which the Revival lost. They won a fatal four way last week, defeating the Lucha House Party, B Team and Heavy Machinery to win the number one contendership once again.

WWE Ottawa live results: Bobby Roode & Chad Gable vs. The Revival

– Natalya, Bayley & Dana Brooke defeated Mickie James, Alicia Fox & Nikki Cross

Bayley pinned Fox after her elbow from the top. Natalya was the first to come out and got a good pop, but Bayley’s was a close second. The heels took most of the match.

After the match, Nia Jax and Tamina came to the ring and attacked the babyfaces, especially Bayley. Jax hit a Samoan drop and they left her laying in the middle of the ring.

– EC3 defeated Dean Ambrose

They had a 10-minute match, with EC3 winning with a small package. The crowd was behind Ambrose.

Ambrose took the mic after losing. He said he got screwed and insulted Canada. He sat on a chair and said he wasn’t going to move until EC3 comes back. Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins came out and tried to talk some sense into him. Ambrose listened to what they had to say but attacked them and hit Dirty Deeds on Hawkins.

– The Ascension defeated Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder

The Ascension won with the Fall of Man on Hawkins. Not much of a match.

– Intercontinental Champion Bobby Lashley & Lio Rush defeated Finn Balor in a handicap match to retain the title

Rush took the mic and insulted the crowd. Balor cut him off to a good pop and asked for a title match, but Rush and Lashley didn’t want to hear it. Adam Pearce came to the ring as an authority figure and booked the match for the Intercontinental title. Balor then asked Pearce to make it a handicap match. Pearce agreed but added that if Rush loses, Balor would become champion.

Good match — the crowd was into it. Balor had Rush in the zone for a Coup de Grace, but Lashley pushed Balor off the top rope and then speared him for the win. After the match, Balor got his revenge with the Coup de Grace on Rush.

– Elias started the second half of the show and invited No Way Jose to the ring. But before he could get there, he was attacked by Drew McIntyre.

– Drew McIntyre defeated Elias

Good match, with McIntyre hitting the Claymore Kick to win. Elias was totally babyface here and the crowd reacted well to him.

– Raw Tag Team Champions Bobby Roode & Chad Gable defeated The Revival to retain their titles

Great match. Roode & Gable retained with their neckbreaker/moonsault combo. Gable got himself over big with his amateur wrestling moves and chain wrestling at the beginning.

Gable took the heat all match, made the hot tag to Roode, and there were a bunch of near falls — and I mean a lot of near falls. They got a “This is awesome” chant.

This was the best match on the card. They gave them time and it showed.

– Braun Strowman defeated Baron Corbin in an Ottawa street fight

Strowman won after putting Corbin through a table. The props got a pop, including Strowman hitting Corbin with a goalie hockey stick. The table got a huge pop as well. Strowman got a very good reaction from the crowd.

The match went 8-10 minutes and was what you’d expect from a street fight between them.

WWE Network adding Ibushi vs. Roode to Hidden Gems next week

Next week’s additions to the WWE Network’s Hidden Gems section will include one of Kota Ibushi’s matches for WWE.

WWE Network News reported that Ibushi vs. Bobby Roode will be uploaded to the WWE Network’s Hidden Gems section on Thursday, January 3. The match took place at an NXT house show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California on October 30, 2016. The video of Ibushi vs. Roode is listed as being 22 minutes and 16 seconds long.

A triple threat match from the same house show where Shinsuke Nakamura defended the NXT Championship against Samoa Joe and Eric Young will also be one of next Thursday’s Hidden Gems.

Ibushi took part in the Cruiserweight Classic and Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic for WWE in 2016 but didn’t end up signing with the company. He’s currently NJPW’s NEVER Openweight Champion and will defend the title against Will Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4.

Japanese wrestlers are the theme of next Thursday’s Hidden Gems. Here are the four other matches that WWE Network News reported will be added:

  • Antonio Inoki vs. Larry Sharpe (Showdown at Shea, August 9, 1980)
  • Jerry Lawler & Greg Gagne vs. Riki Choshu & Mr. Saito (AWA, May 14, 1988)
  • Sting vs. The Great Muta (WCW Power Hour, September 1, 1989)
  • Shinjiro Otani vs. Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship (WCW Worldwide, May 18, 1996)

New Tag Team Champions crowned on WWE Raw

New Raw tag team champions were crowned tonight.

The team of Chad Gable and Bobby Roode defeated the Authors of Pain and Drake Maverick in a 3-on-2 handicap match tonight to win the titles for the first time. The Authors of Pain held the titles for 35 days.

The AOP had the match won, as Roode and Gable were laid out following the super collider. Gable tried to fight back, but was laid out once again. Drake Maverick wanted to score the win for his team, so the AOP tagged him out and celebrated on the outside. Maverick did Bobby Roode’s pose, but Roode caught him off guard with a crucifix and picked up the win and the titles.

The AOP defeated Seth Rollins for the titles in what essentially was a handicap match back on November 5. Since then, they have been feuding with Roode and Gable. Last week on Raw, They defeated Bobby Roode in an impromptu 3-on-1 handicap match after the AOP destroyed Chad Gable backstage, then were inserted into the match by acting General Manager Baron Corbin.

Tag Team title match, Elias vs. Lashley set for WWE Raw

Two matches are set for Monday’s episode of Raw.

WWE.com’s updated preview for Monday’s show confirms that Raw Tag Team Champions AOP will defend their titles against Bobby Roode & Chad Gable on the episode. Elias vs. Bobby Lashley is also set.

Roode & Gable defeated AOP in a non-title match this Monday, with Gable jumping off the top rope and pinning Akam with a sunset flip after Akam shoved Roode to the outside. Elias has been feuding with Lashley and teamed with Braun Strowman & Finn Balor against Lashley, Baron Corbin & Drew McIntyre in an elimination tag match on Raw this week.

WWE will follow up on the Strowman injury angle (which was due to Strowman having a legitimate elbow injury) on Monday’s Raw. They’ll also continue building the Ronda Rousey-Nia Jax and Seth Rollins-Dean Ambrose programs ahead of their matches at TLC on December 16.

Monday’s episode is taking place at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

WWE Main Event results: The Revival vs. Roode & Gable

The Big Takeaway: With Main Event being filmed in Manchester, UK last week, there was a significant improvement in the feel and the quality of the show.

Tyler Breeze snatched a win over Mojo Rawley and The Revival beat Bobby Roode & Chad Gable in a fabulous main event.

**********

Tyler Breeze defeated Mojo Rawley

I was in attendance in Manchester to watch these two matches live. It was interesting to see how Breeze received the kind of reaction that he did. British wrestling fans don’t have short memories and they remember his work in NXT and know what he’s capable of.

Breeze essentially played babyface in peril for most of this relatively short match. The fans were on Rawley’s back throughout and Rawley certainly gave it back, shouting abuse back to the cat calls in the front row.

Breeze eventually got some separation and went up to the second rope to hit the crossbody and then put on the Boston crab. Rawley got to the ropes and — after some brief back and forth — Breeze came off the ropes again and managed to roll through to pin Rawley with an inside cradle.

On the bell, the crowd erupted and Breeze made out of there like a bandit. A nothing match made all the more interesting by the hot crowd.

The Revival defeated Bobby Roode & Chad Gable

This was probably the best match of the entire night. Raw was tepid at best and this match bested anything that Raw had to offer in terms of work rate. Go out of your way to find this if you have the time.

It was interesting here to see how Roode was received by the casual fans. A guy next to me wasn’t aware of Roode particularly, and asked who he was because he felt he looked like an absolute star.

They went 100 miles per hour here with Gable being the star of the match. The Revival are such a smooth tag team and the British fans were hugely into them, especially after their cult status on the NXT roster.

The finish was pure chaos, but fantastic to watch. After Roode had looked to be cleaning house, Gable came in with a top rope moonsault. Dash Wilder then nailed Roode to the outside and Gable chased him around the outside. When he got back in the ring he ran into Scott Dawson and they teamed up to nail Gable with the Shatter Machine for the win.

Bobby Roode replacing Kevin Owens in WWE Mixed Match Challenge

With Kevin Owens out of the tournament due to injury, Natalya has a new partner for Mixed Match Challenge.

WWE announced today that Natalya will be teaming with Bobby Roode for the remainder of the tournament. They are set to face Mickie James & Bobby Lashley on next Tuesday’s episode.

Asuka & The Miz vs. Lana & Rusev will also take place on Tuesday’s Mixed Match Challenge.

Natalya & Owens lost to Ember Moon & Braun Strowman on the season two premiere of Mixed Match Challenge. With Owens needing knee surgery, it was announced this week that he would have to be replaced in the round-robin tournament. The severity of the damage to Owens’ knee won’t be known until he undergoes surgery. Dave Meltzer reported that the expected timetable is that Owens will miss about four months if it’s minor surgery and eight months if it’s major surgery.

This is the third time that a wrestler has had to be replaced in Mixed Match Challenge season two. Moon replaced Alexa Bliss in the tournament, and James replaced Sasha Banks.
