WWE Backstage returning for Royal Rumble preview special

WWE Backstage is returning for a Royal Rumble special.

Fox Sports announced today that a special Royal Rumble preview edition of WWE Backstage will air on FS1 at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, January 30. That’s the night before this year’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

The special edition of WWE Backstage will be hosted by Renee Paquette, Booker T, and Paige. Paquette (formerly known as Renee Young in WWE) departed WWE in August 2020. She also made an appearance on Fox’s pre-show for SmackDown’s season premiere episode in October.

Weekly production of WWE Backstage was ended in June of last year, but it was noted at the time that the studio show could return with occasional episodes surrounding major WWE events. It was announced in October that WWE Backstage would be returning for a special episode in conjunction with SmackDown making a one-week move to FS1 due to the World Series, but that was changed from WWE Backstage to an episode of Talking Smack.

WWE Backstage’s Royal Rumble preview will re-air on FS1 at midnight Eastern time the night of the episode and at 5 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, January 31.

Special edition of WWE Backstage to air after SmackDown this week

With SmackDown airing on FS1 this week, WWE Backstage is returning for a special edition of the show.

A one-hour episode of WWE Backstage will air on FS1 from the WWE ThunderDome after SmackDown this Friday night. A replay of this week’s SmackDown will then air on FS1 after Backstage at 11 p.m. Eastern time.

SmackDown is making a one-week-only move to FS1 this Friday due to game three of the World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers being on Fox.

FS1 suspended weekly production of WWE Backstage this June, though it was noted that the show could return with occasional episodes surrounding major events. WWE Backstage launched in November 2019 and was hosted by Renee Young and Booker T. It also featured a panel of contributors that included CM Punk making select appearances.

The hosts/panel for this Friday’s episode of Backstage haven’t been announced.

This Friday’s SmackDown is the brand’s go-home show for Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. The episode will feature the final build to Roman Reigns and Jey Uso’s Hell in a Cell I Quit match for the Universal Championship and Bayley and Sasha Banks’ Hell in a Cell match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

FS1 suspends weekly production of WWE Backstage

FS1 announced Monday that “production is scaling back” on several shows, including WWE Backstage which will no longer be a weekly show on the sports network.

However, they stopped short of saying the show is outright canceled as there is a strong possibility that it will return around larger WWE events.

Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand first broke the news of the changes which include 20 producers and talents losing their jobs. The boxing show “Inside PBC” and some soccer programming was also cut from the schedule.

The changes do not affect any other WWE programming including SmackDown on Fox and archive content like previous pay-per-views and edited WWE Network documentaries that have aired on FS1 in recent months.

The studio show launched in November 2019 with co-hosts Renee Young and Booker T as constants among a rotating group of regulars that included retired wrestlers Christian and Paige. The show made news when CM Punk was signed on by Fox as an analyst, his first association with WWE in five years. It’s unknown what Punk’s contract status is given the changes, but he hasn’t made any indication that he’s been let go.

The show continued through the pandemic, but overall, Backstage never drew consistently large viewership numbers due to the late night timeslot, pre-empting, and overall interest. A recent edition featuring Bret Hart and Punk did draw the second best viewership in show history with 175,000 viewers.

WWE Backstage draws second best viewership in show history

With CM Punk and Bret Hart both appearing on the show, WWE Backstage drew the second best ratings its ever done.

Last night’s episode of Backstage averaged 175,000 viewers on FS1, up from the 112,000 that the show averaged the previous week. Aside from two preview shows, the only time Backstage has done more viewers was for the November 19 episode. That drew 180,000 viewers and featured Punk’s debut as an analyst.

The viewership was up slightly from the 173,000 viewers that the May 12 episode of Backstage averaged. That also featured an appearance by Punk, and WrestleMania III aired on FS1 leading into the episode.

The rating in the 18-49 demo for last night’s Backstage was a 0.06, up from last week’s 0.03. Backstage ranked 110th on cable in the 18-49 demo last night.

Hart appearing on last night’s Backstage tied in with Survivor Series 1996 airing on FS1 leading into the show. Hart defeated Steve Austin in a classic match at that pay-per-view.

WWE on FOX uploaded Renee Young and Punk’s interview with Hart from last night’s show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsoRzvI4LkI

Young and Booker T also spoke with Hart about his time in WCW:

CM Punk joining Bret Hart on WWE Backstage this week

An appearance by CM Punk has been added to this week’s episode of WWE Backstage.

WWE on FOX announced that Punk will be on this Tuesday’s Backstage, which will also include an appearance by Bret Hart. “Joining ‘The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be’ @BretHart on #WWEBackstage this Tuesday will be ‘THE BEST IN THE WORLD’ @CMPunk!”

Punk was most recently on Backstage when he was part of the panel for the June 2 episode of the show. That episode featured a reunion between Punk and Daniel Bryan, with Bryan appearing as the featured guest that week.

Hart appearing on Backstage ties in with Survivor Series 1996 airing on FS1 this Tuesday. It will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time and lead into Backstage at 11 p.m. Eastern.

Hart defeated Steve Austin in a number one contender’s match at Survivor Series 1996. The pay-per-view also included Sycho Sid defeating Shawn Michaels to win the WWF title and the debut of The Rock as Rocky Maivia.

Bret Hart appearing on WWE Backstage next week

Next week’s episode of WWE Backstage will include an appearance by an all-time great.

WWE on FOX announced today that Bret Hart will be the special guest on Tuesday’s Backstage: “The Best There Is. The Best There Was. The Best There Ever Will Be. Tuesday, @BretHart joins #WWEBackstage, at 11e/8p, on @FS1”

Leading into Backstage on Tuesday, Survivor Series 1996 will air on FS1 starting at 7 p.m. Eastern time. Hart defeated Steve Austin in a number one contender’s match at that pay-per-view.

Survivor Series 1996 also featured Sycho Sid defeating Shawn Michaels to win the WWF title and the debut of The Rock as Rocky Maivia.

WWE Backstage from this past Tuesday was an all-women’s show with Renee Young, Paige, Ember Moon, and Beth Phoenix as the panel and Sonya Deville appearing as a guest. It tied in with WWE’s Evolution PPV from 2018 airing on FS1 prior to Backstage.

WWE Backstage videos: Punk-Bryan reunite, George Floyd discussion

Last night’s episode of WWE Backstage featured a reunion between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.

Punk was back on the Backstage panel for last night’s show, while Bryan was the featured guest for the episode. This was Punk’s seventh appearance on Backstage as an analyst and the first time he’s been on the show since May 13.

WWE on FOX uploaded a 26-minute digital exclusive version of Renee Young and Punk’s interview with Bryan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T09HKU-sE74

Young, Booker T, Mark Henry, and Punk were the panel for last night’s Backstage. They discussed the nationwide protests that have happened since George Floyd was murdered in police custody.

Henry shared his experience of him and his family attending a protest in Austin, Texas, Punk got emotional while discussing hatred being stoked by those currently in power and his grandfather’s experience fighting Nazis, and Booker T urged people to be leaders and say something when they see racism and injustice:

It will be Punk’s seventh appearance as an analyst on Backstage. He most recently appeared on the May 13 episode of the show.

Bryan is facing Jeff Hardy in the semifinals of WWE’s Intercontinental title tournament on SmackDown this week. Both semifinal matches will air on this week’s SmackDown, with AJ Styles taking on Elias on the other side of the bracket. Bryan defeated Drew Gulak in the first round of the tournament.

After airing at midnight each of the past two weeks, WWE Backstage is returning to its normal 11 p.m. Eastern time slot on FS1 on Tuesday. A replay of WrestleMania 31 will air on FS1 at 8 p.m. Eastern time leading into Backstage.

There will be a special episode of WWE’s The Bump at 10:30 a.m. Eastern on the day of NXT TakeOver: In Your House. Shawn Michaels will be appearing as a guest on that edition of The Bump.

Ember Moon says Achilles injury could be ‘career ending’

On this week’s episode of WWE Backstage, Ember Moon emotionally discussed her injury status.

Moon, who has been out of action since rupturing her Achilles in September, was part of the panel with Renee Young, Booker T, and Mark Henry on last night’s Backstage. They discussed the WWE Network’s Undertaker: The Last Ride docuseries and Young asked the panelists if there were any matches from their careers they wish they could go back and redo.

“I look back at my career in WWE, I’ve been here for five years. And, yeah, I could go and say I should have been the one to defeat Asuka’s streak, or at least I hope that. Or I could say that, aw, man, me and Bayley from SummerSlam, I wish I’d done more,” Moon said.

“But the more and more I sit back and look at everything I’ve done and what I would redo, I think more about my injury currently and realizing that I may have a career-ending injury. I’m coming back from the hardest injury, and I might not have a chance to redeem myself of all the things that I wanted to do and all the things that I want to do in my future. It’s so hard to think back and regret when I try to look forward.”

Booker T and Henry both encouraged Moon to keep going, with Henry saying he’s been there before and telling Moon she’s too great and too wonderful to start talking about stopping.

“I keep looking forward and I keep pushing forward because this is what I love. This is my passion, this is the only thing I’ve ever wanted for myself. And I want that opportunity to not look back but to look forward and be better than ever before. And it’s so hard to look back, like it really is,” Moon said.

“It’s hard, and I hope that I do have more matches. There are so many more things that I want to do. Like I said, I’m trying to get on y’alls level. And I’m going to prove to you guys that I’m worth redeeming those mistakes and worth redeeming those regrets — it’s just going to be a while before I do so.”

Moon said on Booker T’s Hall of Fame radio show in January that her Achilles injury happened during a 24/7 title chase segment. On that podcast, Moon said she was told she’d be out of action anywhere from four months to a year and a half due to the type of rupture she suffered.

WWE on FOX uploaded the clip of Moon discussing her injury on last night’s Backstage:

CM Punk set for next week’s WWE Backstage

Next week’s episode of WWE Backstage will feature CM Punk’s sixth appearance as an analyst.

It was announced on last night’s Backstage that Punk will be part of the panel for next Tuesday’s episode of the show. It will be Punk’s second appearance since the show switched to being done remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Punk’s most recent appearance on Backstage was on the April 14 edition of the show.

Next week’s Backstage will be the show’s first episode after Money in the Bank. It was hyped that Backstage will include Punk giving his thoughts on the pay-per-view.

They’re two of the men’s participants for Sunday’s Money in the Bank ladder match, with them being joined by AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, Baron Corbin, and Otis in the match. The men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder matches are taking place simultaneously.

  • Britt Baker appeared on today’s episode of Talk is Jericho. Baker spoke about people saying she stole her “role model” gimmick from Bayley (via Post Wrestling): “While we’re on the topic of that, no, we did not steal the ‘Role Model’ from Bayley because that’s like a daily thing and I know we’ve talked about it too, how the inspiration came from you, from Chris Jericho for the ‘Role Model’ gimmick. I’m not… I don’t wanna say I don’t know totally what’s going on with RAW and SmackDown because I try to stay in touch with it but at the same time, I’m a dentist and a professional wrestler. I don’t know every single storyline or [what’s] going on each week. So, it wasn’t until I actually said the words ‘Role Model’ on TV and then I got the Bayley army coming at me. ‘You’re stealing her gimmick’ [like] I even knew she was calling herself that too.
