MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back with Wrestling Observer Radio tonight. We also have a Q&A show on Randy Savage and Brian Pillman up.  You can send questions to tonight’s show to [email protected]

Raw tonight has Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre non-title, Riddle & Randy Orton & New Day vs. Elias & Jaxson Ryker & A.J. Styles & Omos as well as Charlotte Flair & Shayna Baszler  & Nia Jax vs. Asuka & Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke. I hope somebody remembers that Jax was the  one who “injured” Flair in the first place.

Velveteen Dream is backstage at Raw. No idea if he’s there for the show, but he hasn’t been around of late.

Drew McIntyre spoke with DAZN about a fight with Tyson Fury, saying: “He’s cutting promos on me the other day from Vegas. It’s pretty surreal to me. When I turn on my Twitter, and he does respond. It’s been over a year now that we’ve been going back and forth with each other. It gets people talking. I know there’s going to be a day where we finally make something happen. It’s going to be big, and ideally, I think it’s going to be in the UK.”

When asked more, he said, “Yeah, it helps my profile. But for me, it’s more about how we can draw new fans to WWE, and he has such a significant fan base with a different market. He’s such an entertainer. He has worked with us before, so he gets it. And somewhere like, say the UK, we’ve not had a significant pay-per-view in the UK since SummerSlam ‘92. A very long time. It deserves one. It would need something on top that’s larger than life. It can’t get more larger than life to take two of the UK’s most successful sons in their fields and have a Battle of Britain. I think they’re just the marquee itself. Obviously, I’d love to wrestle one of our guys and have the technical back and forth, 30-minute masterclass. This wouldn’t be the most technical thing in the world. It would be good. I think it would surprise people how good it would be. But just to get those new eyeballs on the product, to get that big UK show, and to make some new fans in the process. That would be pretty cool.”

He also said it’s happening:  “00 percent I see it happening. I’ve got a vision of how I’d like to see it happen. I don’t make the decisions. That’s for others to talk about behind closed doors. But I know somewhere like the UK it would be huge business. I know for meeting Fury, watching him, and the way he went about things when he was here last time. He’s willing to put everything he’s got into it. With me, I know I can get a performance out of anybody on this planet. I know he’s willing to put in the work, and he’s such an entertainer on top of it. It would be a big deal. “

Sunday Night’s Main Event, Drew McIntyre is on at 41:00.

Dave Bautista is in a mystery role in the Knives Out sequel.

Batista unable to take part in WWE Hall of Fame 2021 ceremony

Batista has confirmed that he will not be taking part in this year’s WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, but will be inducted in a future ceremony.

“To the @WWEUniverse Unfortunately due to previous obligations I am unable to be a part of the @WWE #HOF this year,” Batista wrote. “By my request they have agreed to induct me at a future ceremony where I’ll be able to properly thank the fans and people who made my career possible #DreamChaser”

Batista’s Hall of Fame induction was announced last year for the 2020 class. However, the 2020 ceremony was delayed due to COVID-19. WWE has since announced that those who were scheduled to be inducted in 2020 will be part of this year’s ceremony. Those announced last year include John Bradshaw Layfield, The British Bulldog, Jushin Thunder Liger, The Bella Twins, and the New World Order (Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Sean Waltman).

Two names have been confirmed for the 2021 class, Molly Holly and Eric Bischoff.

Dave Bautista set for 2020 WWE Hall of Fame class

By Dave Meltzer and Joseph Currier

WWE is getting an early start on 2020’s Hall of Fame announcements.

In addition to the nWo (Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall & Sean “X-Pac” Waltman) being inducted, WWE has announced that Dave Bautista is going into their Hall of Fame during WrestleMania week in April.

“Vince [McMahon] called me personally to ask me, I was just … I wasn’t surprised, but I was pretty happy,” Bautista told People. “It’s a good feeling, it’s a really great feeling.”

Bautista spent his entire career with WWE. He wasn’t picked up after a WCW tryout, which, given his look, tells you about their talent judgment. He was signed for OVW and became an immediate favorite of Jim Cornette, who booked him as the monster Leviathan. As it turned out, his WWE run was completely different. After a failed debut as Deacon Batista, he became “The Animal” Batista, handpicked to be part of Evolution, with Ric Flair, Triple H, and Randy Orton. Essentially the idea was that Flair was a legend from the prior generation, Triple H was a current legend, and Batista and Orton were groomed to carry the company in the future.

While Orton was the original pick to be the breakout future star to first feud with Triple H, Batista had the more immediate success. In particular, the Batista vs. Triple H WrestleMania 21 match drew what was the most money of any pro wrestling event in history up to that point in time and is still the fourth biggest PPV event in pro wrestling history. For several years, it was Batista and John Cena who were the top full-time stars until Batista left the company to go into Hollywood.

He made two comebacks, both of which led to major WrestleMania matches and announced his retirement after last year’s show when he put over Triple H.

He’s become a successful actor, appearing in leading roles of a number of movies, and is best known for Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The 2020 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony is taking place at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida on Thursday, April 2. The ceremony has been moved to Thursday due to SmackDown now being on Friday.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame ceremony are going on sale to the general public this Friday (December 13).

F4W NEWSLETTER: NXT moving to USA Network Joseph Currier looks at the implications of NXT going head-to-head with AEW. Plus, Vinny’s TV reviews and live NJPW report.

The early stages of the modern-day pro wrestling war between WWE and AEW picked up last week as NXT’s move to the USA Network was officially announced.

The move will begin on Wednesday, September 18, meaning that NXT on USA will get a two-week head start before AEW premieres on TNT on October 2. NXT will become a two-hour show and will be live on USA Network, with NXT and AEW going head-to-head and airing from 8-10 p.m. Eastern time.

After debuting on USA, the NXT episodes will be made available on demand on the WWE Network every Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern. TakeOver events will continue to stream live exclusively on WWE Network.

Full Sail University will also remain the home venue of NXT, with WWE announcing NXT TV dates at Full Sail through the remainder of the year.

“The move to USA Network provides an opportunity to deepen our relationship with NBCUniversal and further build the NXT brand,” Vince McMahon said in a press release. “Over the long term, our goal is to develop a following that can be monetized to the same level as our flagship programs, Raw and SmackDown.”

“Can’t describe this announcement in any other word than PROUD,” Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted. “Proud of everyone involved from day one. Proud you’ve let your voice be heard and carried the banner of this brand. Proud you’ve loudly & clearly said #WeAreNXT. And I’m proud to say, we’re just getting started.”

WWE has denied that NXT going to USA is a response to AEW, with a WWE spokesman telling Deadspin that “It isn’t called counter-programming if you continue to air a series on the same day/time as it has been on for nearly five years.” Though it may be spin, the statement has enough truth to it that WWE doesn’t look completely ridiculous. NXT (in its one-hour taped format on the WWE Network) has long been a Wednesday night show, but it’s hard to believe that WWE wouldn’t have counter-programmed AEW regardless of what night it aired on.

It’s a smart business move for WWE to give AEW competition on Wednesday nights. It’s been estimated that USA is paying WWE $30-50 million per year, though the length of the deal isn’t known. When TNA would face any competition from WWE, the ratings for Impact would decrease. AEW is going to need to put on a must-see show that has a broad coalition of viewers. They have a significant core fanbase made up of those who are already invested in The Elite, but they have to go beyond that and draw casual fans, lapsed fans, people who are dissatisfied with WWE, and others who like WWE but are willing to try out a new product. The most important thing for the future of AEW is that they build their audience and make as much money as possible on their second TV deal. Having to go against NXT is inevitably going to cannibalize some of their viewership. The only question is how big of a hit AEW is going to take.

July 29, 2019 Observer Newsletter: AEW announces TV details, more

All Elite Wrestling officially announced that, as expected, its time slot would be 8-10 p.m. Eastern time on TNT starting weekly on 10/2.

The debut event will be at the Capital One Center in Washington, DC, which is quite an ambitious start given the building would sell out at about 14,000 fans for a WWE Raw or Smackdown configuration. It is also the arena, as the Verizon Center, where WCW ran several Starrcade shows including the biggest show in its history headlined by the 1997 Hulk Hogan vs. Sting match. While AEW would have easily sold that number of seats for Saturday night holiday weekend shows with a Starrcast event, a midweek show will be far more difficult, especially since from a media standpoint, their launch will be secondary to WWE’s debut on FOX two nights later.

The company’s release said that ticket prices and the on-sale date would be announced on 7/29.

Batista episode of WWE 24, Ricochet Chronicle set to premiere

New episodes of WWE 24 and Chronicle are set to debut on the WWE Network over the next week-plus.

After Raw on Monday (July 8), a new edition of WWE 24 called “Batista: Dream Chaser” will air. Here’s the description for the show: “Batista chased his dreams of becoming a WWE Legend and Hollywood megastar. At WrestleMania 35, he returned for the last match of his career.”

Batista returned to WWE in February and furthered his program with Triple H after it was set up at SmackDown 1000 last year. Triple H defeated Batista in a no holds barred match at WrestleMania 35, with Batista announcing his retirement from professional wrestling the next day.

Ricochet will be the subject of a new WWE Chronicle that will premiere after EVOLVE’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, July 13. The description for the episode is: “Get a look into the life of Ricochet as he captures his first title and shows why he’s one of the WWE’s fastest-rising stars.”

At Stomping Grounds last month, Ricochet defeated Samoa Joe to become the new United States Champion. He’s been involved in a program with AJ Styles since.

The WWE 24 episode is listed as being an hour long, while Chronicle is in a 30-minute time slot.

WWE Raw live results: WrestleMania 35 go-home show

Date: April 1, 2019
Location: Capital One Arena in Washington, DC

The Big Takeaway —

The women’s main event at WrestleMania is, in fact, a winner take all match with both titles on the line. They did a big time angle with Rousey, Charlotte and Lynch getting into a huge brawl which led to cops getting involved. All three women were handcuffed but still managed to attack each other and the officers while also smashing police cars.

The announced Angle vs. Mysterio match never happened. They aired a nice video tribute for Angle, which led to Corbin mocking him. Angle wanted to face Corbin tonight, but he refused, which led to Corbin defeating Mysterio in the main event. So, Angle will be facing Corbin at Mania. The show ended with Angle tapping out Corbin on the stage.

There was no real mention of John Cena on the show outside of his appearance in the Angle tribute video.

Show Recap —

Stephanie McMahon came out to the stage as the announcers ran down tonight’s lineup. Stephanie got a mixed reaction. She said the triple threat match was about to become even bigger when she adds herself to the match, which was booed, then admitted it was an April Fool’s joke, which got little reaction.

Stephanie announced that all titles will be on the line at WrestleMania. One of Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair or Becky Lynch will walk away with both titles because Sunday is “winner takes all.” The crowd cheered and Stephanie left. This was all done in 3-4 minutes, which is good.

Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out next. They were heavily booed by the crowd, who also sang along with Heyman as he introduced Lesnar. Heyman said “winner takes all” was an appropriate phrase, because the winner Brock Lesnar would take everything Seth Rollins had to offer and still walk away as champion.

He said Lesnar would take everything Rollins has in life as well, just as he did when he took Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania, and when he took the hopes and dreams of Roman Reigns. Heyman said Lesnar would end Rollins’ career.

Heyman said this was for the fans who watch hockey for the fights, Nascar for the crashes, or football for the riots — Lesnar would violate Rollins and raise the title above his head. When Lesnar was done on Sunday, Heyman said they would simply go out to dinner and discuss what was next, because Rollins was just an afterthought to the beast.

Rollins’ music hit and he marched to the ring. Rollins called it the biggest match of his career, but it was also the biggest of Lesnar’s career. Lesnar laughed.

Rollins said Lesnar would no longer be able to walk in here, push people around and make demands. Rollins said nobody wanted him here, not the wrestlers or the fans. Rollins knew that Lesnar found this amusing and called him the most decorated athlete in combat sports history. He said beating Lesnar was improbable, but not impossible.

Rollins said he would beat Lesnar and take the title on Sunday. Lensar laughed and shoulder-checked him on the way out of the ring, then Rollins grabbed him and kicked him low. Lesnar came back and gave him a German, but Rollins slipped out of an F5, gave him another low blow, followed by a superkick and curb stomp. Rollins held up the belt, dropped it and left.

The crowd ate this up. It should be noted that Rollins stood toe-to-toe with Lesnar and was almost as tall as him, which is funny given the story they’ve been trying to tell.

After a break, Charly Caruso told Rollins that if he did all that on Sunday he would be disqualified. Rollins blew this off and said Lesnar had it coming.

8-woman tag match: Sasha Banks, Bayley, Natalya & Beth Phoenix defeated Nia Jax, Tamina & The IIconics (11:14)

Phoenix wore her old gear, or at least something similar, and looked great. The faces were in control but Phoenix got annoyed at Banks and Bayley when they jumped in to help because she didn’t need it. After a break, Bayley worked over Billie Kay, but was distracted by Peyton Royce, which allowed them to take over.

One of the IIconics was about to tag Jax or Tamina, but they hopped off the apron. Bayley went for a hot tag to Banks but Phoenix pushed her off the apron and made the tag instead. Phoenix gave Royce a powerslam but was pulled out of the ring by Tamina. Phoenix responded by driving Tamina through the barricade, which stunned her teammates.

Her teammates also just stood there instead of helping as Royce went after her. Royce wasn’t a problem, though, as Phoenix just grabbed her and hit the Glam Slam for the win. Phoenix and Natalya stared down Banks and Bayley afterwards. If you blinked, you might’ve missed that Nia Jax was even out there.

Batista was shown arriving in a Cadillac and was cheered.

Batista promo

Batista came out to a big reaction. His music is still awesome. The crowd cheered and chanted “welcome back.” They turned off the arena lights and put on spotlights for his promo. Batista bowed his head and pointed at the screen, then a video package played. It was a series of clips of Batista destroying Triple H. The crowd cheered the video.

Batista looked into the camera, took off his shades and said: “Hunter… kiss my ass.” He smirked, dropped the mic and posed for the crowd. Before leaving, he bowed for the crowd. This was great.

Lumberjack match: Apollo Crews defeated Jinder Mahal

This match was designed to plug the Andre the Giant battle royal. They aired a graphic for the battle royal which shows all of the announced competitors. They also have a second graphic for the match which focuses only on Braun Strowman, Colin Jost and Michael Che. Strowman was not one of the lumberjacks.

Crews won in about 90 seconds with a frog splash. He posed with the trophy afterwards, but the B-Team wanted a photo op with it instead. This somehow led to a brawl with everyone involved. They did the thing where everyone got tossed over the ropes, and even though this isn’t a real match, the people who got tossed still left to the back.

Not only did Crews win the match, but he also came out on top of this fake battle royal. He pressed Samir Singh over his head and tossed him outside onto Mahal and Sunil.

Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio were shown having a friendly discussion backstage.

Yolanda Adams will perform America the Beautiful at WrestleMania.

Kurt Angle promo

Angle came out for the top-of-the-hour segment. He received a big reaction and “thank you, Kurt” chants. He said this was his last night ever on Raw. He wanted the fans to know how much he appreciated them through all the bad times and good times. He thanked the fans, and they thanked him.

The ring announcer directed the fans to the video board for a tribute video for Angle. This seemed to catch Angle by surprise. The video included praise from Ric Flair, Big Show, Randy Orton, John Cena, Triple H and Steve Austin.

The video showed his highlights as a performer in and out of the ring, getting hurt in his Mania match against Lesnar, and his Hall of Fame induction. They came back to the live crowd who gave Angle a huge ovation. He was in tears.

Baron Corbin interrupted. Corbin said the video should have been in black and white because it was ancient history. He said the man in the video wasn’t the same man in the ring. He said Angle struggled to even take his jacket off or go more than 2-3 minutes in the ring. He said the guys today were simply better than Angle.

Corbin was also sick of the fans flooding his social media demanding a different opponent for Angle. The crowd cheered and some chanted for Cena. Corbin said fans need to forget about the Angle they saw in that video because all they would see on Sunday is a broken down man. (Corbin was good here.)

Angle said they could have an exhibition match right now. Corbin marched to the ring, but then backed off. Corbin said Angle wouldn’t make it to Sunday if he got in there now.

Rey Mysterio came out before Corbin could leave. Mysterio said someone needed to teach him a lesson and offered to fight Corbin right now instead. The crowd chanted “619,” then Corbin gave him a cheap shot. Angle and Mysterio teamed up on him. Mysterio gave him a seated senton and Angle followed with an Angle Slam.

This was a good segment, but they also wanted you to forget that Angle and Mysterio were supposed to have a match.

Backstage, Caruso asked Charlotte if she was concerned about having to defend her title at Mania. Charlotte said someone should ask Asuka if she was blindsided when she won the title last week. She said she would blindside everyone at Mania when she wins.

Charlotte wasn’t worried about tonight either because she wasn’t a hot-head like Lynch or a loose cannon like Rousey. She warned them to stay away from her after the match, or else they won’t make it to Mania.

The Revival defeated Aleister Black & Ricochet via countout to retain the Tag Team Championships

There was a brawl outside involving Black and the Revival, then Ricochet did a damn flip dive over the turnbuckle onto both Revival members. Dash Wilder managed to get back in the ring before the 10-count, but as Ricochet went to the ring, Scott Dawson grabbed his leg from under the ring, preventing him from beating the ten count. Revival retained.

Afterwards, Black killed both Dawson and Wilder with Black Mass kicks, then Ricochet gave Dawson a 630. (My feed died during this match, but it seemed pretty entertaining from what I saw.)

Rey Mysterio vs. Baron Corbin was made official for tonight.

Backstage, Rousey was shadow boxing when she was approached by Caruso. Rousey told her that she didn’t feel like talking, then talked about how Lynch and Charlotte were facing judgement day.

Alexa Bliss told Tyler Breeze that she liked his new haircut and it made him like a cuter version of Chris Hemsworth (as if). Bliss also talked about how great she’s doing as Mania host. EC3 started laughing and said last week’s Weekend Update on SNL was great. (He initially seemed sarcastic, but that’s not what they were going for.)

Strowman suddenly appeared and wondered what they were laughing about. Breeze blamed it on some guys down the hall and Strowman believed him (Strowman had to have been within earshot when they were talking, so this made him look very dumb.) Strowman found two guys, one black guy and one white guy. He referred to them as Che and Jost (you can guess who was who) and told them to face him tonight or else.

Elsewhere, Roman Reigns told Dasha Fuentes that there were no rumours about him not being ready. He said he was totally ready to go, then Drew McIntyre attacked him from behind. McIntyre beat him down and told him he should’ve said no. Some officials backed off McIntyre. Reigns got to his feet, but for some reason didn’t go after McIntyre, who could’ve have been far.

Based on the previous two segments, it’s like you’re in another universe if you’re not in the camera frame.

Caruso interviewed Lynch, who didn’t care what the wooden Charlotte had to say. Lynch also said she purposely pushed Rousey’s God complex to make her feel like she was unbeatable. She thought it was funny they were trying to find another way to take her out of this match, but she was wise to their act. She said her opponents talked about wanted to make history, but she had no choice to make history.

6-woman tag match: Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch defeated The Riott Squad

Sarah Logan worked over Lynch and Rousey was not impressed with Lynch’s effort. Lynch fought back and made a comeback on Liv Morgan. She gave Logan and Morgan exploder suplexes. Lynch tried applying the Disarmer but Charlotte tagged herself in. She got in Lynch’s face, then Rousey tagged herself in. Morgan tried to catch her with a schoolgirl, but Rousey immediately through into an armbar for the submission win.

As soon as the bell rang, Rousey attacked Charlotte, which was funny. The three women brawled until security ran down. The women fought security until the lamest looking cops ran down. Rousey pushed through to get to Lynch and accidentally knocked down a cop, so they put her in handcuffs. Lynch took a shot at Rousey so the cops put her in cuffs as Charlotte watched.

As the cops tried taking Rousey away, Charlotte booted her, then went after Lynch. The cops put her in cuffs, too. All three were in cuffs and taken away by the officers. Renee Young said this was “unbecoming” of these women. The three women continued to make things difficult on the officers as they were taken through the back.

Charlotte was placed into a police car, then Rousey kicked Lynch. The officers thought it was a good idea to put Rousey and Lynch into the same backseat, which led to a great camera reveal when they saw each other. They kicked away at each other and even smashed the back window. They pulled Lynch out of the car, then Charlotte escaped and kicked away at her.

Suddenly, Rousey was in the front seat and pressed on the gas, causing the car she was in to smash into the other. Rousey was finally placed in the backseat again, then Charlotte kneed her in the face (which looked brutal). The two cars drove off, taking away Rousey and Lynch as Charlotte continued to make life difficult for the officers.

It won’t make any logical sense that these women will be allowed to wrestle on Sunday, but this was still great chaotic fun. After a break, Michael Cole said that was the damndest thing he’d ever seen.

Heavy Machinery defeated Bobby Roode & Chad Gable (3:03)

A minute into the match, Lacey Evans was allowed to strut out onto the stage to her music. Otis did the worm into an elbow drop on Roode, but Gable broke up the cover. Gable knocked Tucker out of the ring, but Otis caught him off the ropes and they used the Compactor for the pinfall win. Roode wasn’t happy after the match.

They plugged Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston.

Cole said Rousey, Charlotte and Lynch were taken to a local precinct where they will be booked and told us to check social media later for updates.

2-on-1 handicap match: Braun Strowman defeated two guys (3:01)

Strowman ran over both guys on the outside. The crowd asked him to do it again, so he did. He gave them each powerslams, then picked them up at the same time and gave them another powerslam for the pinfall win.

Young wondered if Che and Jost could call in sick, to which Coe responded, “there is no sick in WWE.” Amazing timing.

The WrestleMania kickoff starts at 5pm ET, then the main show starts at 7pm ET.

Caruso interviewed Bobby Lashley in the ring. She asked him if he was at all concerned with Finn Bálor after he won last week. Lio Rush took over and said they won’t have deadweight like Mahal to deal with. He said their only concern was over where the afterparty would be in New York. Caruso asked about rumours that we’d see the demon Bálor.

Lashley wasn’t concerned and said he’s beaten Bálor every time. Bálor showed up on the screen and said he’s always been a man with demons, and on Sunday, his demons would become Lashley’s nightmare. Smoke covered Bálor’s face, then after a camera cut, he was suddenly in his demon makeup. He stuck his tongue out and snarled.

This was really lame. They should’ve just kept it a surprise.

They aired a clip of Rob Gronkowski tackling Mahal at WrestleMania 2017.

Baron Corbin defeated Rey Mysterio (13:35)

The last time Mysterio wrestled on Raw was the night after WrestleMania 30 in 2014 when he lost to Bad New Barrett.

After a break, Corbin was in control and tried ripping off Mysterio’s mask. Mysterio landed awkwardly off the top and sold his leg, so Corbin began kicking away at it. Mysterio responded with kicks to the face but Corbin launched him to the outside, then followed with a clothesline. Mysterio eventually came back with a hurricanrana and tilt-a-whirl DDT for two.

Mysterio hit the 619 and went to the top but missed a frog splash. Mysterio tried mounting another comeback, but Corbin caught him off the ropes with a Deep Six for the pinfall win.

Corbin posed on the ramp, then Angle attacked him from behind and put him in the ankle lock. Corbin tapped out, then officials ran out to separate Angle as his music played.

They showed one more replay of the angle involving Rousey, Lynch and Charlotte before going off the air.

Batista set for WWE Raw, Women’s tag title participants to face off

Batista will officially be appearing on Monday’s go-home episode of Raw in his hometown of Washington D.C.

WWE has announced that Batista will appear on the show for a segment where he responds to Triple H ahead of their no holds barred match at WrestleMania. Batista didn’t appear on this past Monday’s Raw, but their storyline continued with Triple H reading a letter from Batista’s attorney. It said Batista wouldn’t compete at WrestleMania unless Triple H’s career was on the line.

Triple H cut a promo where he agreed to the stipulation and accused Batista of trying to quit again with the letter.

An eight-woman tag match has also been announced for Monday’s go-home show. It will feature all of the participants in WrestleMania 35’s fatal four-way Women’s Tag Team title match, with Sasha Banks, Bayley, Beth Phoenix & Natalya teaming against Nia Jax, Tamina, Peyton Royce & Billie Kay on Raw.

This will be the first time Phoenix has wrestled on Raw since 2012.

The Capital One Arena is hosting Monday’s Raw. Brock Lesnar will appear on the episode, Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair will face The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan) in a six-woman tag match, and Kurt Angle’s farewell tour will continue with a match against Rey Mysterio.

There’s a stipulation where Rousey, Lynch, or Charlotte will lose their spot in the WrestleMania main event if they betray their team against The Riott Squad.

WWE adds stipulation to Triple H vs. Batista at WrestleMania 35

WWE has added another stipulation to Triple H and Batista’s no holds barred match at WrestleMania 35.

A segment on tonight’s Raw set up that Triple H’s career will be on the line when he faces Batista at WrestleMania.

Batista didn’t appear on Raw, but there was an angle where Triple H read a letter from Batista’s lawyer. It said Batista wouldn’t compete at WrestleMania unless Triple H agreed to put his career on the line. Triple H agreed to the stipulation and accused Batista of trying to quit again with the letter. Triple H said he isn’t going to let Batista quit this time.

The build to Triple H vs. Batista officially began when Batista attacked Ric Flair and ruined Flair’s 70th birthday celebration segment on the February 25 episode of Raw. WrestleMania will be the first time Batista has wrestled since June 2014.

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will host WrestleMania on April 7.

HHH vs. Batista no holds barred match set for WWE WrestleMania 35

Triple H and Batista are officially set to face off in a stipulation match at WrestleMania 35.

As expected, tonight’s face-to-face segment on Raw led to Triple H vs. Batista being confirmed for WrestleMania. A no holds barred stipulation was also announced for the match.

Batista came out with a security team and wouldn’t enter the ring with Triple H. They went back and forth as Batista told Triple H to give him what he wants. Batista wanted to face Triple H at WrestleMania — and Triple H said the match is on.

Batista said all he’s ever wanted is one last match to end his career on his terms — and to end Triple H’s career on his terms. Triple H responded by announcing the no holds barred stipulation.

After an interaction between them at SmackDown 1000 this past October, Triple H vs. Batista was made apparent for WrestleMania when Batista attacked Ric Flair during an angle on the February 25 episode of Raw. Batista ruined Flair’s 70th birthday celebration segment and asked if he had Triple H’s attention now.

WrestleMania 35 is taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on April 7.

WWE Raw live results: Triple H & Batista go face-to-face

Date: March 11, 2019
Location: PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA

The Big Takeaway —

Kurt Angle announced that his last match will take place at WrestleMania. Angle also had one more match tonight in his hometown of Pittsburgh and defeated Apollo Crews.

Raw ended with the Drew McIntyre show. Roman Reigns was supposed to have a match with Baron Corbin, but McIntyre attacked him and laid him out with two Claymore kicks, including one into the ring post. They played it up like Reigns might have a concussion. This led to McIntyre beating Dean Ambrose in an entertaining falls count anywhere match. McIntyre won with a Claymore kick and gave him another after the match.

Show Recap —

The Shield came out through the Pittsburgh crowd to start the show. The announcers ran down last night’s events and reiterated that Dean Ambrose is leaving the company.

Roman Reigns said he’s come to realize that life is short and if last night was the last time ever, he had no regrets because last night he got to do what he loves with who he loves. He said his brothers have never let him down.

Reigns said we were on the road to WrestleMania and they all had business to take care of. He himself hasn’t had a singles match on Raw in over 5 months and would love to here in Pittsburgh. Reigns said Ambrose had his own business to take care of but wasn’t sure what it was. He wished Ambrose luck.

Reigns moved on to Seth Rollins and the crowd chanted “slay the beast.” He said Rollins would beat Lesnar at Mania and take the Universal title. Ambrose hugged Rollins and they all did the Shield pose, then Ambrose and Reigns left the ring to let Rollins take over on his own. (Ambrose didn’t say a word here.)

Rollins said the Shield burned it down at Fastlane, but before he could say anything else, Paul Heyman interrupted. Rollins ran down some of the names Lesnar defeated along the way, including Goldberg, Big Show and Samoa Joe. Rollins then noted that Lesnar had trouble with Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles, and was almost defeated by Finn Bálor.

Rollins said Lesnar seems to have trouble with guys his size and style. Unlike those other men, he was uniquely qualified to actually beat Lesnar. The crowd chanted “slay the beast” and Heyman said that wasn’t going to happen.

Heyman said Rollins wasn’t telling the whole truth. Lesnar had no time to prepare to face the men Rollins mentioned. He said Styles replaced Jinder Mahal, Bryan replaced Styles, and Bálor replaced Braun Strowman. Lesnar only had 5-12 days to prepare for each of those men.

Heyman played a Lesnar video package then warned Rollins of what was to come. The crowd shrieked as Shelton Benjamin suddenly appeared from behind and tossed Rollins around with three German suplexes. They played Benjamin’s music and went to break.

Seth Rollins defeated Shelton Benjamin (10:24)

Heyman joined commentary. He said Benjamin and Lesnar weren’t necessarily friends, but did run down their history together. Rollins hit a blockbuster but missed a curb stomp. Rollins slipped out of a German but Benjamin caught him with a running kick for two.

After a break, Heyman took a call on his cell, then told Cole that Lesnar didn’t appreciate his comments, nor was he a fan of the video package the lazy WWE production crew made for him. Heyman announced that Lesnar would be on Raw next week. Cole didn’t seem worried and flippantly said “maybe he’ll beat me up again.”

Benjamin hit a German suplex and seemingly went for an F5, but Rollins slipped out, hit two superkicks and a curb stomp for the pinfall win. As Rollins celebrated, Bálor’s music hit and he entered for his match. Bálor and Rollins shook hands on the ramp.

(There was a weird moment where they showed Bobby Lashley’s face on the big screen as Bálor’s music and lights were still going.)

WWE congratulated themselves on having one billion followers on various social media.

Bobby Lashley defeated Finn Bálor to win the Intercontinental Championship (10:54)

Every Bálor TV match seems to start the same way. The heel takes control and applies a rest hold within a minute, then Bálor fights back and hits a flip dive leading a break. That’s what happened here, except instead of a dive, Bálor used a running soccer kick from the apron.

After a break, Bálor fought out of a headlock (as Rollins did in the previous match) but Lashley caught him with a downward spiral for two. Bálor countered a powerbomb into a low dropkick, followed by a running forearm, chop, and double foot stomp. Lashley grabbed him and drove him into the turnbuckle, but Bálor came back later with a slingblade and running dropkick.

Bálor went up to the top but the bell suddenly rang and Bálor stopped what he was doing. It was Lio Rush ringing the bell. Rush grabbed the title belt, so Bálor chased after him and gave him an enziguri. Bálor then tried a springboard move but Lashley caught him with a spear for the win. Lashley is the new IC champion. He celebrated with Rush afterwards.

(There was a local commercial advertising Raw in Montreal after Mania, and one of the matches announced was Lashley defending the IC title against Rollins. This aired before the title change we just saw.)

Later tonight, Alexa Bliss reveals the host of WrestleMania.

Charly Caruso asked Baron Corbin about his Reigns comments from a few months ago, then they showed a replay. Corbin reiterated his comments and said Reigns couldn’t possibly be 100-percent after battling that disease. He said he would house train the big dog tonight. He also said Reigns’ Shield brothers wouldn’t be able to help him. Not sure why that’s the case.

Ronda Rousey promo

Rousey started: “You can all take your applause and shove it. You think I give a damn what you bandwagon bitches think?” Rousey said she didn’t forget people chanting “you deserve it” after she got beaten with a kendo stick. She ran down Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair, and said she would desecrate the place they love.

Rousey said she got Charlotte disqualified last night because she wanted to beat them both at Mania. She also wanted to embarrass and expose Lynch, Charlotte and WWE as the carny con-artists they always have been. Rousey said WWE has her permission to make the match a handicap match and would be embarrassed with herself if she even broke a sweat.

Rousey said Lynch and Charlotte were both jokes and anyone who believes in this whole charade was also a joke, then tossed down the mic.

Dana Brooke came out and said we’ve heard enough of Rousey. She said she had nothing left to lose and wasn’t going to let Rousey disrespect the business, the fans and the locker room. Brooke said she worked her ass off to get here and to prove she belongs. Brooke noted that Rousey normally issues an open challenge after a PPV and she would be glad to accept.

Rousey instead kicked her down and tossed her around ringside. She was about to apply an armbar as officials surrounded her, but stopped and told the fans to pay 60 bucks if they wanted to see an armbar. She smacked a referee and Cole piped in with “Rousey’s gone rogue!” Rousey grabbed her title and jacket and left. Rousey was good here.

Ricochet & Aleister Black defeated Bobby Roode & Chad Gable (4:26)

Ricochet and Black won quickly after Black pinned Roode following a Black Mass. Afterwards, the Revival attacked Ricochet and Black on the stage. They backed away when Roode and Gable got close.

Kurt Angle will address his future tonight here in his hometown.

A Moment of Bliss

Bliss said being the host of WrestleMania was an honour and listed some past hosts: Kim Kardashian (who was booed), The Rock and the New Day. They played a quick video to announce that Mania will be hosted by none other than Alexa Bliss. Bliss acted surprised and said it was an honour for the WWE universe. “You are welcome.”

They aired a video package recapping what happened last week with the guys from SNL and made sure to show some screenshots of websites that wrote about it. Caruso asked Strowman if he thought he had the right to jack up Colin Jost by his neck. Strowman didn’t care if he had the right to or not, he enjoyed it. A stagehand appeared and told him that his car was ready, to which Strowman responded, “what car?”

After a break, Strowman and the stagehand were in the parking lot in front of a Chevy Camaro. The guy read a note from Jost who wrote an insincere apology to Strowman stating that the Camaro was a gift.

Strowman ripped the car apart while yelling about how it was too small for him anyway. He ripped off the door and hood with ease, then smashed the windshield with his bare fist. Strowman said he would see Jost and Michael Che live in New York and they would get these hands. This was amusing.

Elias was in the ring. He was cheered. He tried turning on his hometown, saying it’s a miracle he’s a success given he came from Pittsburgh where everyone is an enormous waste of life.

He said people from Pittsburgh were miserable, and miserable people hold great people back, and that’s the advice he gave to his friend Antonio Brown. He advised Brown to take their money and run, which he did, and now he looks great in black and silver. The crowd booed this but it wasn’t that loud. It’s almost like they didn’t want to boo their hometown guy.

No Way Jose (who now has bright green and yellow hair) danced out with his friends but Elias attacked him and gave him a Drift Away on the ramp.

They announced Harlem Heat for the Hall of Fame. Lacey Evans entered and waved at Corey Graves (while blocking Renee Young’s face).

Nia Jax (w/Tamina) defeated Natalya (w/Beth Phoenix) via DQ

Before the match, Natalya said she wasn’t sure who had her back anymore and didn’t think she could trust Rousey. She did know she could trust her best friend, which brought out Beth Phoenix.

The match ended quickly by disqualification when Phoenix attacked Jax as she worked over Natalya. She also knocked down Tamina. The heels bailed as Phoenix checked on Natalya. They cut to the back where Sasha Banks and Bayley brawled with Jax and Tamina until officials broke it up.

Batista was shown arriving at the building.

Batista and Triple H face-to-face

Triple H came out wearing jeans, a t-shirt and leather jacket. The crowd chanted for Batista. Batista’s music hit and he sauntered out to the stage wearing a fancy suit and shades. About ten security guards came out to stand in front of him and the crowd booed. Triple H asked if he was just going to stand there like a nose-ring model or if he was going to do something.

Triple H guessed security was there for his own protection. Batista said no, he wasn’t stupid. He learned from the two dirtiest players in the game and admitted the security was here for himself. He asked Triple H where his sledgehammer was. Batista said they were going to do things on his terms and he was going to get what he wanted.

Triple H said he wasn’t giving Batista anything. He asked Batista how many times he’s quit this company and wondered why he would give him anything. Triple H said if Batista was too much of a coward, he would make his way through his security, the Guardians of the Independent Scene, and kick his ass.

Batista said he quit because he wanted to get far away from Triple H. He got tired of Triple H holding him down and looking down on him. Batista would get what he wanted or he was going to continue hurting the people that Triple H loved. Triple H told him to get in the ring.

Batista knew that Triple H wanted it too, but he won’t give it to him because he’s not in control. Batista wanted him at WrestleMania. Triple H yelled, “you’re on.” Batista smiled and thanked him because this is all he ever wanted: one last match to end his career on his terms, and to end Triple H’s career on his terms.

Triple H told him to dig deep down inside because the match would be on his terms. He said their match would be no rules, no restrictions, no laws–a no holds barred match. Batista left.

Kurt Angle announcement

Angle came out in his gear and a t-shirt. Angle said 23 years ago he left Pittsburgh to compete in the Olympics where he won a gold medal with a broken freakin’ neck and that led him to a career in WWE where he beat everyone.

No matter where he went, he always considered Pittsburgh his home, which is why he wanted to make this announcement tonight: WrestleMania would be his farewell match. He thanked the WWE, the locker room, and the fans. He became emotional and said: “You made it so much fun for me. I literally had the time of my life.” The crowd stood and chanted “thank you, Kurt.”

Angle wanted one more match in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then it was on to WrestleMania.

Kurt Angle defeated Apollo Crews (3:01)

Graves spoke about what it was like growing up in Pittsburgh and following Angle on TV. Angle used a belly-to-belly suplex but Crews came back with a dropkick for a one count. Crews followed with a vertical suplex and chinlock, but Angle fought out and they traded punches.

Angle then gave Crews triple German suplexes (Crews went way up for the last one). Crews kicked out at two, then hit an enziguri and standing moonsault for two. Angle avoided a frog splash and nailed an Angle Slam for the pinfall win.

Angle seemed emotional celebrating the win. He helped Crews to his feet and they hugged. The crowd applauded Angle as he soaked it in. This was nice and also kind of sad.

Roman Reigns vs. Baron Corbin

As Reigns entered the ring before the match, Drew McIntyre attacked him from behind. Reigns tried to fight back, but McIntyre caught him with a Claymore kick outside the ring. McIntyre sized him up and hit another Claymore kick, this time knocking Reigns’ head into the ring post. Officials ran down to back off McIntyre as a trainer checked on Reigns for a concussion.

Reigns acted like he might have a concussion. Rollins ran down to check on Reigns. Reigns said he didn’t want to do this out here. Rollins told Reigns that it was okay to admit if he’s not fine. Reigns said he just has a headache. Reigns put his arm over Rollins’ shoulder as they walked up the ramp.

Back from break, Ambrose and Rollins walked with Reigns toward the trainer’s room. They urged him to get checked out. Rollins went into the room Reigns. Ambrose saw Triple H and marched up to him. Triple H asked how Reigns was doing. Ambrose said he wanted McIntyre in a falls count anywhere match. Triple H said, “hell yeah.”

Drew McIntyre defeated Dean Ambrose in a Falls Count Anywhere match (14:22)

McIntyre came out with a mic and asked Ambrose if he was going to take this beating like a man or if he was going to squeal like his pathetic brother Roman. Ambrose ran after him and they started the match.

Ambrose was all over him as they fought through the crowd. They got to the top of the 100 level section and McIntyre tossed him into a wall. He tried chucking Ambrose over a railing into the crowd but Ambrose bit him and nailed him with an axe handle. Ambrose threw a small table at him and they went to commercial.

During the break, the fight spilled onto the concourse where Ambrose dumped a table on McIntyre, then ate some popcorn off the floor. McIntyre then tossed him into the merchandise stand.

Back from break, they made their way down section 103 to the ringside area where McIntyre hit Ambrose with the steel steps for a two count. He tried it again but again Ambrose kicked out. McIntyre followed with a suplex on the floor for another two count. McIntyre taunted him and said he would take out every Shield member one at a time, so Ambrose kicked him in the nuts.

McIntyre used a steel chair, then dumped Ambrose on the hockey boards. Ambrose placed McIntyre on an equipment case with wheels and pushed it into another case. He followed with an elbow drop for two. Ambrose then used a small package of all things on the stage for two.

McIntyre cleared the announce table but Ambrose gave him a backdrop onto it. McIntyre followed with a low-blow of his own, then stabbed Ambrose in the face with a pencil. McIntyre then drove him into a video board a couple of times for a two count. Ambrose slapped McIntyre, then McIntyre slapped Ambrose.

McIntyre then squeezed Ambrose through a railing and killed him with a Claymore kick, which looked quite violent. McIntyre pinned him for the win.

As McIntyre posed on the announce table with his music playing, Ambrose started moving and got to his knees. The announcers pled with him to stay down. McIntyre nailed him again with a Claymore kick and they cut his music as the show ended. This was great.

Triple H-Batista segment announced for next week’s WWE Raw

The build to Triple H vs. Batista at WrestleMania 35 will continue on next week’s Raw.

WWE has announced that Triple H and Batista will take part in a face-to-face segment on next Monday’s episode. Their match has yet to be officially announced for WrestleMania, but it was made apparent when Batista attacked Ric Flair in an angle on Raw last week and asked if he has Triple H’s attention now.

Triple H cut a promo responding to Batista on this week’s Raw in Philadelphia. Batista didn’t make an in-person appearance on the episode, but an Instagram video from him was shown.

Batista said he didn’t have other obligations and isn’t afraid of Triple H — he just doesn’t like Philadelphia. Batista mentioned that he’ll think about how much he doesn’t like Pittsburgh (the host city for next week’s Raw) and may see Triple H there. Batista said they’re going to play this game by his rules.

Next Monday’s Raw is taking place the night after Fastlane.

March 4, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Roman Reigns returns to WWE after leukemia remission, more

Roman Reigns (Leati Joseph Anoa’i, 33), returned to WWE after four months off, which included both a battle with leukemia as well as a role in the movie “Hobbs and Shaw” on the 2/25 show in Atlanta.

His return was a heavy emotional scene, both for himself and the crowd at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta. He noted that he was officially in remission and was back. Later he got physical in an angle where he and Seth Rollins saved Dean Ambrose from a beating from Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, Baron Corbin and Elias, where he was doing his trademark Superman punch and laid out McIntyre with a spear. Nothing was said about a first match back, but it would make sense for it to be at the 3/10 Fastlane PPV from Cleveland or at WrestleMania on 4/7 in East Rutherford, NJ, with some sort of a Shield reunion. That would make the former more likely since Rollins is scheduled to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

WWE Raw video highlights: Roman Reigns and Batista return

Roman Reigns and Batista both returned to WWE television on last night’s Raw.

Reigns opened the show and announced that his leukemia is in remission. Reigns said “The Big Dog is back” and that “we didn’t just swing for the fences, we hit a home run.”

Reigns began and ended his speech by thanking the fans and went around ringside to shake hands and hug people. Seth Rollins came out to the stage and hugged Reigns, and they teamed up to save Dean Ambrose from Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin, Bobby Lashley, and Elias later in the night.

Ric Flair’s 70th birthday celebration furthered the storyline for Batista vs. Triple H. As Flair was supposed to be coming out for his birthday segment, it was revealed that Batista had attacked him. Batista asked if he has Triple H’s attention now.

Becky Lynch also appeared last night, interrupting Ronda Rousey & Natalya vs. The Riott Squad. After Lynch got “arrested,” Rousey demanded that WWE adds Lynch to the Raw Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania.

Rousey left her title belt in the ring after Stephanie McMahon refused to add Lynch to the match. Rousey said it’s time for Vince McMahon to make the right decision.

Batista returns on WWE Raw, furthers angle with Triple H

Batista returned to Raw tonight, making sure he got Triple H’s attention by laying out Ric Flair.

The theme for tonight’s Raw centered around Flair’s 70th birthday celebration, with a number of stars sending him birthday wishes including Snoop Dogg and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon came out in the final segment of the show and introduced Sting, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle and Ricky Steamboat as special guests.

Triple H then introduced Flair as his music played. However, after a few moments it became clear something was amiss as backstage Batista appeared, dragging a camera over to Ric Flair’s dressing room. He shut the door and attacked Flair, dragging him out of the room. He then asked Hutner if he had his attention.

Hunter left the ring and went backstage, but Batista was nowhere to be seen. He tended to Flair as the show closed.

It was reported earlier today by Dave Meltzer that Batista was backstage tonight at Raw and was being kept hidden. He last appeared on WWE television on the 1000th episode of SmackDown, reuniting with the rest of Evolution. He mentioned to Triple H during the segment that he had never beaten him, teasing a future match.
