Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw. We will probably have time tonight for questions as well so you can send them to [email protected]

Raw tonight is from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta which is sold out with more than 11,400 tickets out as of this morning. The key things on the show are Brock Lesnar appearing to do an angle with Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. Dominik Mysterio & Damian Priest in a non-title match, Gunther vs. Matt Riddle with Giovanni Vinci and Ludvig Kaiser barred from ringside, Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez defending the women’s tag titles against Sonya Deville & Chelsea Green and Viking Raiders vs. Alpha Academy in a Viking rules match which is Viking oriented weapons at ringside. I don’t know this, but with the four guys in the non-title match not listed on the matches I’ve seen for SummerSlam, I could see this being set up or a title match either for that show or for television. Odyssey Jones, who worked a dark match on Friday night, is there so he may work on Main Event tonight.

We’re looking for reports on the show with Main Event matches and anything else not on the live show to [email protected]

Smackdown for Friday is also sold out in Orlando with 12,200 tickets out.

Francis Ngannou spoke to Ariel Helwani today on the MMA Hour about his match with Tyson Fury. He said they were in talks with a boxing match with Deontay Wilder, which would have been a terrible idea, and the Fury fight came about in the last five weeks. Helwani said Ngannou’s payoff will be above $8 million and Ngannou said it was more than he’s made in his entire UFC career combined. Ngannou said that if he wins (unlikely but it is a fight so anything is possible) there is an automatic rematch but if Fury wins, he’s not sure about that.

Josh Alexander, who was just cleared to return to action after surgery to repair a torn triceps, was announced a the new head trainer at the Can-Am Wrestling school in Windsor, ONT.

Ronda Rousey will be on Stars on Mars again tonight on FOX.

Wes Lee vs. Dominik Mysterio, Bronco Nima & Lucien Price vs. Scrypts & Axiom, Dragon Lee & Nathan Frazer vs. Humberto Carrillo & Angel Garza and Kiana James vs. Gigi Dolin will be on NXT tomorrow.

Yesterday’s TV was the final appearance of Nick Aldis with Impact. He had only agreed to a short run, which climaxed Saturday night with the PPV main event loss to Alex Shelley. He will be appearing in one last match on TV, either this Thursday or next week, against Eric Young. Mike Johnson reported Aldis was in talks with WWE for a producing job.

AEW Blood & Guts has done very strong business since the announcement of the match. They are at close to 8,200 tickets out for the Wednesday show at the TD Garden.

We’re looking for your thoughts on both nights of G-1, AAA TripleMania and Impact Slammiversay with a thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match for each show to [email protected]

Day three of G-1 starts at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning with A and B block matches

  • A: Kaito Kiyomiya vs. Chase Owens
  • B: KENTA vs. Great O’Khan
  • A: Hikuleo vs. Gabriel Kidd
  • B: Taichi vs. Tanga Loa
  • A: Yota Tsuji vs. Ren Narita
  • B: Will Ospreay vs. Yoshi-Hashi
  • A: Sanada vs. Shota Umino
  • B: Kazuchika Okada vs. El Phantasmo

Tony Khan will have a press conference tomorrow for the ROH PPV show which takes place on Friday night going against both Smackdown and Rampage.

We’ve had a lot of people comment to us about what an amazing weekend it was for high-quality matches. We also got recommended the Chihiro Hashimoto vs. Natsupoi match on the Sendai Girls show as a great David vs. Goliath type match.

We’ve gotten a lot of questions regarding the writers strike and how this affects wrestling. All the writers are non-union for WWE and AEW creative is as well. There is no effect on wrestling other than if the strike lasts any length of time, wrestling will become more valuable as first-run weekly programming. Nick Khan in the past has tried to push the idea of a simulcast of Raw on both NBC and USA like ABC and ESPN did for the UFC prelims on 7/8 and football and soccer has done of late. If this continues that is a stronger possibility than ever before.

Nick Hausman reported that a 9/14 show in Jerusalem, Israel that Sting and Rob Van Dam were to headline is in jeopardy. The statement made by the people putting the show together was:

“We regret to announce that the Global Pro Wrestling Summit event will not be going forward, as scheduled for the Pais Arena in Jerusalem on September 14, 2023. The promoter, All-Stars Israel/Stagetime, is in breach of contract on numerous fronts, inclusive of not delivering deposits to talent as stipulated in the contracts, and has been duly notified that the contracted talent (which includes ALL non-Israeli talent being advertised for the event) will NOT be appearing. THIS promoter has been advised to pull advertisements/promotions containing talent from all platforms and to cease selling tickets immediately in connection with the advertisement/promotion of any of these talents. In the interest of protecting consumers from fraud, we’ve notified both the Pais Arena and the on-sale platform –Ticket Tailor—that the event, as currently being advertised/promoted by All-Stars Israel/Stagetime, is not going forward. In the process of producing this event, first-class teams in both the US and Israel have been assembled. Talented professionals such as Rick Bassman. Scarlette Donovan, Todd Keneley, Alon Levin, Jeramie McPeek, Oren Treitman, Pete Trerice, Danny Ly Ziser, and others have put forth a consistently excellent and thoroughly conscientious effort to build and advance what we all hoped would be an unforgettable and wholly-positive experience, for talent and “office” alike, and especially, for the fans. That said, with this large volume of good work behind us, including booking an unparalleled card and having a solid commitment for pay-per-view, we’re all hard at work trying to “save” this event by aligning with a reputable, major promotional entity. Progress is being made, with REPUTABLE promoters, both in Israel and in other territories. In the event we are to move forward on the September 14 date, we will provide updates accordingly, and all ticket sales for Pais will be honored at the new venue. That said, fans who have purchased tickets thus far may wish to elect to request a refund through Ticket Tailor, the platform All-Stars Israel engaged. www.tickettailor.comIf September 14 does not come to fruition, we will regroup, and continue to put forth our best efforts to bring world-class professional wrestling to Israel in the very near future. But… we’re still fighting the good fight! In any case, we PLEDGE… a “new” event will be announced ONLY when ALL funding is in place. “

All In is being advertised in London on some double decker buses. WWE did the same thing last year for Clash at the Castle. (thanks to Ciaran and Stephen Lyon)

Dark Side of the Ring tomorrow is on Abdullah the Butcher.

The New Japan TV show on Thursday will be airing the 2016 G-1 Climax final with Kenny Omega vs. Hirooki Goto, which was a classic match at the time.

Fathom Events is presenting “They Live,” the 1988 film by John Carpenter and starring Roddy Piper in Piper’s most famous big screen lead role. It will air in selected theaters on 9/3 and 9/6.

Daniel Garcia will be headlining West Coast Pro as it debuts in Los Angeles on 9/10 at The Don Quixote.

Francis Ngannou, Tyson Fury boxing match set for Saudi Arabia

After more than a year of speculation, former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou will make his professional boxing debut against future Hall-of-Famer and occasional pro wrestling toe dipper Tyson Fury.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger confirmed the news Tuesday morning, saying the fight will take place in Saudi Arabia on October 28th.

What is not confirmed yet is whether the fight will be an exhibition or if Fury’s WBC heavyweight title will be on the line. When news broke this past week about the impending fight, it appeared likely it would be an exhibition given that Ngannou has never boxed before. Tied into that question are the rules and number of rounds.

It’s assumed the fight will be a pay-per-view.

This will be Ngannou’s first fight in any combat sport since he defeated Cyril Gane for the UFC heavyweight title in January 2022. He and the UFC eventually went their separate ways after not being able to come to terms on a new deal which became ugly publicly.

Ngannou signed with upstart MMA organization PFL earlier this year and will be part of their pay-per-view division. He said he expects to debut for them in 2024.

Fury is best known to wrestling fans for his handful of appearances in WWE. He made his debut at 2019’s Crown Jewel, defeating Braun Strowman by countout. He also was ringside for last September’s Clash at the Castle as a second to Drew McIntyre and has teased a match between them several times.

Friday Update

We won’t be having a show today but Garrett Gonzales and I will be back tomorrow night covering Collision, Smackdown, UFC 290 and all the news of the past week including all the Observer stories and business notes, and there is a lot of it.

The new Observer issue is up on the site now. We’ve already gotten a lot of great feedback on the Darren Drozdov story.

Ariel Helwani reported that Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou is expected to be announced shortly under boxing rules no doubt.

Smackdown tonight is from Madison Square Garden. The huge ratings run will likely continue tonight with the trial of Roman Reigns by the Usos, plus Edge returns in the Grayson Waller Effect, A.J. Styles faces Karrion Kross and Austin Theory defends the U.S. title against Sheamus. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor for the world title is scheduled as a dark match. Trick Williams was sent to the show, so he may be in a dark match or in an angle. Vince McMahon is at the show as he would be expected to be because he almost always goes to MSG events. About 13,500 are to be in attendance and it is sold out.

Georges St-Pierre, who will be doing a grappling match in December coming out of retirement, has said he would like to face Anderson Silva, Khabib Nurmagomedov or Kamaru Usman.

Bandido after surgery yesterday on his broken wrist is hopeful to be back in action in six to weight weeks. All In is 7 1/2 weeks and that is the hoped for goal if he would even be booked on the show.

Josiah Harrell, who was to face Jack Della Maddalena tomorrow on the UFC show, in his MRI was found with moyamoya syndrome, a rare disease that results in blocked arteries at the base of the brain according to Nolan King of MMA Kings. He will undergo a brain procedure and is obviously out of the fight. UFC confirmed that Della Maddalena will be off the card.

We’ve looking for reports from these weekend shows:

  • Smackdown tonight in Madison Square Garden (dark matches only)
  • NXT tonight in Largo, FL
  • NXT tomorrow night in Melbourne, FL
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights

Some more notes on the AEW ratings from Wednesday, which came out today. Dynamite’s 855,000 viewers and 0.29 was first place on cable, and also beat everything on at least English language television except The Price is Right from 8-9 p.m. on CBS in 18-49. It was second on television and an 0.29 on cable is more impressive than an 0.42 on network in hour one. In house two, it was tops on all of television. Sista Series on BET was second on cable at 0.18 and Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo was third at 0.17, followed by Expedition Unknown on Discovery at 0.16. The 35-49 numbers were way up but 18-34 was still at the same 0.19 as last week. The MJF/Adam Cole post-match was the 18-49 and 18-34 high point.

The G-1 Climax tournament starts a week from Saturday, which is also the day of the Kenny Omega vs. El Hijo del Vikingo match for AAA in Tijuana.

UFC 290 is tomorrow from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas:

6 p.m. on ESPN 2

  • Brandon Moreno (125) vs. Alexandre Pantoja (125) for the flyweight title
  • Alexander Volkanovski (144.5) vs. Yair Rodriguez (145) for the featherweight title
  • We have a preview in the current issue. Turner missed weight by two pounds and has to forfeit 20 percent of his purse.

Dana White is claiming that 100 percent Mark Zuckerbeg and Elon Musk want to fight in UFC and he said he has a date planned for the fight. He said if a commission says no, he’ll find a commission who says yes and said the show will do one billion in revenue.

Becky Lynch & Seth Rollins and Montez Ford & Bianca Belair are being sent by WWE to the Espy Awards.

Best wishes to former pro wrestler Rick Allen, known as Sunny Beach on Northeast indies and the Herb Abrams UWF, who had heart surgery on Thursday. He worked many television matches for WWF as well.

The Impact shows this past week in Wagga Wagga, Australia will be airing later this month on Impact in 60.

MLW is doing a PPV show on FITE+ tomorrow night from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia with Alex Hammerstone vs. Alex Kane for the title as the main event.

Battery charges against former UFC fighter Luis Pena were dismissed, stemming from an October 2021 arrest. Pena was accused of striking two women, and injuring them, one of which was his partner who he allegedly struck several times with a cosed fist and another woman attempted to stop him and he allegedly punched her and knocked her down. UFC then released Pena from the promotion but has fought five times in smaller companies since.

Triple H comments on potential WWE futures of Dwight Howard, Tyson Fury

Paul “Triple H” Levesque has commented on the WWE futures of Tyson Fury and Dwight Howard.

Fury has performed once inside a WWE ring at Crown Jewel in 2019. He was also on-hand for Clash at the Castle in Cardiff earlier this month. Levesque spoke with the Sporting News at the Crown Jewel press conference recently and stated that he believes Fury has the potential to do something special in WWE.

“I think Tyson Fury is chomping at the bit to get in the ring,” Levesque said. “The question is which ring will he get into? Is it going to be the boxing ring or is it going to be the WWE ring? We were just together in Cardiff, we had a long talk. He’s as enamored as ever in wanting to do this with us. I think he knows he’s got a few big fights left in him in the boxing world. I think he’s going to capitalize on those fights.”

“Selfishly, I want him to come work with us. Also selfishly, I want to see those fights. So, I hope he knocks those out and I hope he stays interested because I do think with the dedication and the drive that he could do something special with us as well.”

Howard attended a WWE tryout in Nashville during SummerSlam week. Levesque says “the ball is in his court” regarding the basketball player’s WWE future.

“I think the ball is in his court. It’s a funny thing, Dwight, in the conversations we had, was like, ‘You Know, I really want to do this. I’m serious, I really want to do this’ but we hear that a lot and there’s a difference between saying I want to do this and putting in the grind and doing the work to get there. [He] came by our tryouts in Nashville, was incredibly entertaining, jumping in promos by himself and then with others. Incredibly entertaining, really driven to want to do this.”

“He’s got a lot of other things going on, so when he says, ‘Hey, I want to give this a shot,’ he’s got my phone number. All he’s got to do is call me and we’ll see what can happen. And if he’s willing to put in the grind and the drive that guys like Logan Paul and Bad Bunny and Tyson Fury are willing to put in then let’s go.”

Tyson Fury confirms he’ll be ringside for WWE Clash at the Castle

Tyson Fury will be at WWE Clash at the Castle.

WWE posted a video of the 34-year-old boxer confirming his attendance for the event. Fury noted that he will be sitting ringside for the show.

“Hi, Tyson Fury here. I’m really excited for the first WWE Premium Live Event in 30 years going down at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff,” Fury says.

“I will be sat ringside, live and exclusive to watch this great event.”

GiveMeSport reported on Wednesday that Fury would be at the event but is not expected to get physically involved with the action.

“The decision to keep Tyson away from the ring is likely due to the fact he doesn’t want to risk picking up an injury ahead of a potential return to boxing,” wrote Louis Dangoor.

Fury is rumored to be facing Oleksandr Usyk later this year.

During a post-fight press conference in April, Fury teased possibly wrestling Drew McIntyre in Cardiff.

“I got to speak to Vince and the boys, maybe make this happen. I know Drew McIntyre has been saying a lot of things about me, I’d love to knock him out. I’d love to be at Cardiff. I’d love to be back at center stage in the UK,” he said.

Report: Tyson Fury to appear at WWE Clash at the Castle

Tyson Fury is reportedly set to make an appearance at WWE Clash at the Castle on Saturday.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, the 34-year-old will be in attendance at the show in Cardiff but will not be getting physically involved in the action.

“The decision to keep Tyson away from the ring is likely due to the fact he doesn’t want to risk picking up an injury ahead of a potential return to boxing,” wrote Louis Dangoor.

Despite announcing his retirement from boxing after his defeat of Dillian Whyte in April, Fury has been training for a potential fight with Oleksandr Usyk later this year.

Fury teased a potential match with Drew McIntyre in Cardiff during a post-fight press conference after his victory over Whyte.

“I got to speak to Vince and the boys, maybe make this happen. I know Drew McIntyre has been saying a lot of things about me, I’d love to knock him out. I’d love to be at Cardiff. I’d love to be back at center stage in the UK,” he said.

Fury has only competed once in a WWE ring. He defeated Braun Strowman via count-out at Crown Jewel in 2019. He alo performed on the November 8, 2019, edition of SmackDown from Manchester when he and Strowman were involved in a segment with Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel.

Report: Tyson Fury in talks for a WWE return this summer

Tyson Fury could be back in WWE shortly.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, the undefeated boxing champion is currently in talks with WWE about a return to the company. Should a deal be reached, Fury could potentially appear at WWE Clash at the Castle from Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on Saturday, September 3, 2022.

Fury’s one match in WWE came at Crown Jewel on October 31, 2019, when he defeated Braun Strowman via count-out. He would then perform on the November 8, 2019, episode of SmackDown from Manchester when he and Strowman were involved in a segment with Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel.

Since he last appeared on WWE programming, Fury has won three straight fights. He defeated Deontay Wilder in back-to-back bouts before earning a TKO victory over Dillian Whyte in April.

Fury spoke with GiveMeSport back in March in the lead-up to his fight against Whyte. He told the outlet that he was certain he’d be back in a WWE ring again eventually.

“One million percent, you will see me in the WWE again. One million percent,” Fury said.

Tyson Fury teases potential Drew McIntyre match at WWE’s Cardiff stadium event

Tyson Fury brought up Drew McIntyre’s name during a post-fight press conference today in the United Kingdom.

Following his victory over Dillian Whyte this afternoon at Wembley Stadium, Fury talked about potentially facing Drew McIntyre at WWE’s stadium event at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on September 3.

“Don’t rule me out of fighting there,” he said when asked. “You might see me at SummerSlam. I got to speak to Vince and the boys, maybe make this happen. I know Drew McIntyre has been saying a lot of things about me, I’d love to knock him out. I’d love to be at Cardiff. I’d love to be back at center stage in the UK. ”

Fury has previously wrestled in WWE, facing Braun Strowman at WWE Crown Jewel back in October of 2019, defeating Braun Strowman by count out. The following month, he appeared on the November 8 edition of SmackDown in Manchester, teaming with Strowman to defeat the B-Team (Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel).

Fury defeated Whyte, scoring the win via TKO in the sixth round, retaining the WBC and The Ring Heavyweight titles.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight covering Raw, the AT&T/Discovery merger, the return of ROH to live shows and more news from WrestleMania Backlash. You can send email questions for the show to [email protected]

The Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua fight that seemed to be a go is now on hold as arbitrator Daniel Weinstein ruled that the contract for Fury to face Deontay Wilder that they signed prior to the first fight that guaranteed an automatic rematch was valid. The fight, set for 8/14 in Saudi Arabia, could still happen if Wilder gets paid enough to agree to step aside.  But that would have to be a huge amount of money.  Fury was at the WWE PPV yesterday with his son, and shared photos of his son with Vince McMahon and Rey Mysterio.

For the first time ever, a WWE PPV failed to crack the top 20 in Google Searches, with No. 20 being at 100,000. That would indicate the lowest interest level except maybe for some of the overseas shows. However, Dave Bautista did chart No. 6 at 200,000, some of which was for responding to people who blamed him for the Miz vs. Damien Priest fiasco. He said to blame Vince. We’re currently taking polls on WrestleMania Backlash as well as UFC  262, so you can leave a thumbs up, down or middle along with a best and worst match for each show to [email protected]

AEW put tickets on sale for Double or Nothing on 5/30. They did not sell out instantly although they sold 3,000 tickets in the first few hours. As of last word a few hours back, they had set up for 3,700 and had about 3,000 sold.

As far as the NBA Playoffs go, Raw is lucky tonight with nothing. NXT on Tuesday goes against two games, Charlotte vs. Indiana at 6:30 p.m. and Washington vs Boston at 9 p.m. AEW on Wednesday goes against San Antonio vs. Memphis at 7:30 p.m. While they are lucky not to go against Golden State vs. Los Angeles, which starts after Dynamite ends, many people will want to catch at least the end of the first game. There will also be one game on Friday night to be determined.

Fit Finlay was on Gerald Brisco & John Layfield’s podcast and Finlay said that the COVID outbreak in New Japan included his son. He said that several wrestlers when they were leaving the country to go home and had to take a test to get on the plane tested positive. The names he gave were his son and Jay White, so both had to stay in Japan to quarantine before they could travel home.  He also said that his son was confused about his next move career-wise.  We were able to confirm the story but Finlay and White were the only other names we heard that tested positive and are remaining in Japan.  At this point, with New Japan back running, on 5/25, it makes sense for them to stay since White for sure was booked for Dominion and both could work shows shortly.

Announced for Raw tonight is Alexa’s Playhouse with new women’s tag champs Natalya & Tamina. The show has been torn up several times today and as of a few hours ago was still being rewritten.

Ringside News reported that the original plan for yesterday’s show was for the Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Braun Strowman match to be in the main event slot, but it was changed to the Roman Reigns vs Cesaro match. We have confirmed this is accurate and actually the entire order of the matches were changed the day of more than once.

Kip Sabian announced today that he had undergone surgery. The angle with Miro on Dynamite was to set up the needed surgery.  Sabian on social media said the surgery was a success.

The New York Post called the Miz vs. Priest match one of the saddest moments in WWE history. (thanks to Barry Werner)

Miz suffered a knee injury last night.

WWE

  • The bruising of Cesaro’s arm was not from a prior injury but called “lucky bruising” in the sense the match was about working the arm, and in a ring accident, it ended up bruising.

UFC

  • Conor McGregor announced today the birth of his third child, a boy named Rian.
  • Philip Rowe vs. Orion Cosce is being looked at for the 7/31 show.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back with Wrestling Observer Radio tonight. We also have a Q&A show on Randy Savage and Brian Pillman up.  You can send questions to tonight’s show to [email protected]

Raw tonight has Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre non-title, Riddle & Randy Orton & New Day vs. Elias & Jaxson Ryker & A.J. Styles & Omos as well as Charlotte Flair & Shayna Baszler  & Nia Jax vs. Asuka & Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke. I hope somebody remembers that Jax was the  one who “injured” Flair in the first place.

Velveteen Dream is backstage at Raw. No idea if he’s there for the show, but he hasn’t been around of late.

Drew McIntyre spoke with DAZN about a fight with Tyson Fury, saying: “He’s cutting promos on me the other day from Vegas. It’s pretty surreal to me. When I turn on my Twitter, and he does respond. It’s been over a year now that we’ve been going back and forth with each other. It gets people talking. I know there’s going to be a day where we finally make something happen. It’s going to be big, and ideally, I think it’s going to be in the UK.”

When asked more, he said, “Yeah, it helps my profile. But for me, it’s more about how we can draw new fans to WWE, and he has such a significant fan base with a different market. He’s such an entertainer. He has worked with us before, so he gets it. And somewhere like, say the UK, we’ve not had a significant pay-per-view in the UK since SummerSlam ‘92. A very long time. It deserves one. It would need something on top that’s larger than life. It can’t get more larger than life to take two of the UK’s most successful sons in their fields and have a Battle of Britain. I think they’re just the marquee itself. Obviously, I’d love to wrestle one of our guys and have the technical back and forth, 30-minute masterclass. This wouldn’t be the most technical thing in the world. It would be good. I think it would surprise people how good it would be. But just to get those new eyeballs on the product, to get that big UK show, and to make some new fans in the process. That would be pretty cool.”

He also said it’s happening:  “00 percent I see it happening. I’ve got a vision of how I’d like to see it happen. I don’t make the decisions. That’s for others to talk about behind closed doors. But I know somewhere like the UK it would be huge business. I know for meeting Fury, watching him, and the way he went about things when he was here last time. He’s willing to put everything he’s got into it. With me, I know I can get a performance out of anybody on this planet. I know he’s willing to put in the work, and he’s such an entertainer on top of it. It would be a big deal. “

Sunday Night’s Main Event, Drew McIntyre is on at 41:00.

Dave Bautista is in a mystery role in the Knives Out sequel.

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • In an interview with The Big Issue, Drew McIntyre continued to push the idea of a match between him and Tyson Fury. “When I’m able to win back my WWE title we’ll fly back home, get an open top bus at the top of Scotland. I’m going to make my way down Scotland, [and have a] big celebration all the way down into England. Get to Fury’s house, set ourselves up a little match. It’s going to happen. The thing is he has a genuine love for wrestling and he’s such an entertainer, he gets it.I know we could do some fun business together. Probably some kind of Battle of Britain would be the theme.”
  • Mercedes Martinez spoke to Daily DDT about her choice not remaining with the RETRIBUTION stable. “Do I regret the decision [to leave RETRIBUTION]? No, I do not,” she said. “I always have to put forth what’s great for me in my career now. I can’t look in the future, I don’t know what can happen in the future, but I have to take the opportunity and what’s best for Mercedes Martinez’s career at this moment. With RETRIBUTION, I took the opportunity, but it wasn’t the right opportunity. It didn’t feel right in my heart to be there. With the crew there and with the RETRIBUTION members, I want nothing but the best for them and they’re young enough to do what they got to do and take the opportunity and kill it.”
  • Jeff Jarrett on Sportskeeda talked about the Mickie James shipping incident from last week, saying “Obviously I’ve known Mickie her entire career. Incredible talent. You know, that story broke and without knowing all the details, it took in my opinion… how the bag got there. Cosmetically it didn’t sit well with a lot of folks. but also know that there’s a lot of discussion in the world we live in with social media and clicks. I get it. I completely understand it,But without… look, there’s a lot of things that aren’t always what they truly appear to be,” Jarrett added. I don’t know who shipped it, how it was shipped, what was in that bag, what was in the contents of that bag. There’s so many questions, what if? But I know one thing it made great headlines last week and a lot of discussion. But at the end of the day I don’t think either side… Mickie’s a future Hall of Famer without question. But it was a unique situation, difficult for both sides but I think it’s water under the bridge at this point.”

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, Brock Lesnar as well as taking e-mail questions that you can send to [email protected]

There should be major changes in ratings, particularly involving sports, as Nielsen begins counting viewership outside the homes in places like bars, restaurants and airports. This is supposed to make a huge change going forward in sports ratings, particularly major sports events.

Tyson Fury and Drew McIntyre went back-and-forth over Twitter with challenges. It seemed not to be grandstand stuff but such a match doesn’t seem to make economic sense unless it’s in Saudi Arabia or WrestleMania, and everyone is going with the idea that the show scheduled for later this year isn’t happening.

Even though last week the injuries to Drew McIntyre were supposed to be career threatening, he was as of this morning scheduled to headline the 9/27 PPV show, likely against Randy Orton. This should all be made clear on tonight’s show.

WWE Payback was the No. 8 most searched term on Google yesterday with 200,000 searches, which is identical to what Saturday’s UFC show did and probably a little better than would be expected under the circumstances. It is what a normal B show does, but a lot of people figured coming a week after SummerSlam would lead to lower interest.  We’re still doing our weekend polls for both Payback and the New Japan Jingu Stadium show on Saturday so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle with a best and worst match from each show to [email protected]

Richard Drasin, who was well known in the bodybuilding community from the 70s Gold’s Gym era and wrestled from 1966 to 2001 as Ric Drasin, passed away yesterday at the age of 76 after being hospitalized with a series of heath complications. We talked about this last night and will have a bigger article on him in the Observer, but he was a guy who could have been a star as many promoters including Don Owen and Verne Gagne liked his look as a babyface but in the end, he never wanted to leave the Venice Beach scene and that cost him a lot of opportunities.  He trained a number of wrestlers, including Rusev, Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus, promoted independent shows and his own promotion for 16 years, and was a popular podcaster talking about the bodybuilding scene in the 70s. He also played the part of Demi-Hulk in The Incredible Hulk television show.

WWE

  • For Raw tonight, the only thing announced was Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins as of earlier today.
  • Jeff Hardy turns 43 today and Mickie James turns 41.

UFC

  • A major featherweight fight with Brian Ortega vs Chan Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie, which UFC has tried to put together in the past, is now slated for 10/17.

  • Gustavo Lopez vs. Felipe Colares in a bantamweight fight has been added to the 11/7 show.

AEW

  • TV Guide in their new listings has AEW Dynamite No. 57 in a list of the 100 best television shows in the U.S.  I can’t recall a pro wrestling show ever making the list other than GLOW.  No. 1 was Better Call Saul.
  • MJF”s lawyer, who faces Jon Moxley on Wednesday’s show, Smart Mark Sterling, is an independent wrestler as well as the producer and co-host of Matt Cardona & Brian Myers’ podcast. He trained with MJF at Myers’ school in New York, which is also where Kris Statlander was trained (thanks to Scott Yager)

  • The town of East Haven,CT sent a cease and desist letter to Leonard Inzitari (former WWF wrestler Mario Mancini) to shut down a wrestling event at Inzitari’s wrestling school that was scheduled for this past Saturday night. The reason give is that the city has categorized Inzitani’s Paradise Alley Pro Wrestling show a “pornographic, adult entertainment and fetish wrestling.”  The school is run by Inzatari, Paul Roma, Steven Paradise and Paul Perez. Jes Inzitari, the son of Leonard, has said that the promotion emphasizes a G rated atmosphere where no profanity, no blood or weapons are allowed. He has started a petition to get this ruling overturned.  Others who have attended the shows have said that nothing inappropriate has happened at the events.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

We’re looking for reports from tonight’s NXT show in St. Paul, MN to [email protected].

Our weekend show is up, talking Wilder vs. Fury, changes at WrestleMania, Wednesday ratings in detail, WWE stock rise and many other topics.

For the weekend, the only thing from combat sports that trended on Google was the Fury-Wilder fight with 5.2 million searches, which is huge, but still well under half of McGregor-Cerrone which is quite the sign of the times. Paul Felder was No. 12 earlier today with 20,000, but that doesn’t mean he’ll crack top 20 today when the day is over.

Regarding yesterday’s fight, Deontay Wilder did not suffer a broken jaw or a ruptured eardrum, but he did have bleeding in the ear which wouldn’t have helped his balance. According to Kevin Iole, he did need seven stitches to close the cut in his ear.

Go out of your way to see the Manabu Nakanishi retirement ceremony from yesterday in Tokyo. Lots of tears flowing backstage as well after it was over.

Shinsuke Nakamura needed nine staples on the back of his head from when he was powerslammed on the piano on Smackdown on Friday night.

Dave Bautista is scheduled to appear Thursday night on the Late Late Show with James Cordon on CBS. (thanks to Jon Southerland)
