UFC releases former champion Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem

Months after Dana White said the organization would likely be cutting more fighters, the UFC has released both former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and former title challenger Alistair Overeem.

ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported that dos Santos had five fights left on his contract while Overeem had two. Helwani reported that UFC offered dos Santos a short notice fight at this month’s UFC 260 against Marcin Tybura which he declined, leading to his release.

Given the high-profile UFC 259 this weekend, it’s likely White will discuss the releases during his media obligations.

The 37-year-old (21-9) has lost four straight dating back to June 2019, all by knockout or TKO. He had been with the company since October 2008 and is best remembered for his 2011-13 trilogy with Cain Velasquez that saw him both win and lose the title with the first fight kicking off their network deal with Fox.

In an Instagram post announcing his release, he indicated he wants to keep fighting.

He faced virtually every big name at heavyweight during a thirteen year run that included Stipe Miocic, Frank Mir, Fabricio Werdum, Mark Hunt, Derrick Lewis, Francis Ngannou and Overeem himself.

The 40-year-old Overeem (47-19-0-1) won titles in every promotion he has competed in except for the UFC. He is coming off a second round knockout loss to Alexander Volkov last month which snapped a two-fight winning streak. He has won four of his last six.

He signed with the UFC in 2011 and debuted against Brock Lesnar in a dream fight, defeating the physically weakened former champion in the first round. Like dos Santos, Overeem fought a litany of big names through his ten years in the UFC including dos Santos himself, Mir, Miocic, Hunt, Werdum, Ngannou and Andrei Arlovski. He fought for the title just once, losing to Miocic by first round knockout at UFC 203 in September 2016 — the same show CM Punk debuted on.

If he wants to keep fighting, Overeem does have an extensive history with Bellator MMA president Scott Coker from their Strikeforce days while Japan’s RIZIN could be an option given his past fighting for both PRIDE and Dream. Coker has been open to cross-promotion in the past, especially with RIZIN.

UFC on ESPN+ 42 live results: Alistair Overeem vs. Alexander Volkov

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC On ESPN+ 42: Overeem vs. Volkov, emanating from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Octagon returns to Las Vegas for the first time in 2021 for the first of four events in the month of February with a heavyweight main event featuring two men with a combined 106 professional fights between them.

Alistair Overeem will be looking to make it three consecutive wins when he battles Alexander Volkov in the night’s five-round headline bout. Overeem is coming off back-to-back wins over Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai in 2020 and is eager to get another UFC title shot. Volkov is looking to win for the second straight time after defeating Harris in October, and is also looking to get himself a long-awaited title shot.

In the co-main event, it is an important bantamweight contest as Cory Sandhagen takes on former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. The winner could be in line to challenge the winner of the UFC Bantamweight Championship bout between Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling, which takes place at UFC 259 on March 6. Also on the main card is a lightweight bout as long-time UFC veterans Michael Johnson and Clay Guida square off, flyweight bout between Alexander Pantoja and the debuting Manel Kape, and a lightweight rematch between Diego Ferreira and Beneil Dariush. Dariush defeated Ferreira at UFC 179 in October 2014, and both men are on solid win streaks, as Ferreira has won six straight and Dariush five straight.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 5 p.m. eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Our weekend show is already up on the site covering AEW, Smackdown, the WWE’s new doctrine regarding third party deals and much more.

Matt Hardy has been released from the hospital. He was doing much better today. Every company needs to have a better mechanism when it comes to stopping matches. Every company will have concussions issues because it is inherent with the product and always has been.  It’s hard to do and performers hate it, but matches need to be stopped after concussions or even last night, if there was no concussion, because the risk was very clear of being one.  There are a lot of questions regarding AEW clearing Matt Hardy to do the finish last night after cracking his head on the floor and seemingly being out of it. WWE has done the same on several occasions in recent months including twice with Kairi Sane, and New Japan had a similar issue on last year’s U.K show with KENTA in the Ishii match.  It should be stopped and get them checked out.

AEW released an announcement saying that Hardy took an MRI and CT scan and both indicated he did not have a concussion. He is being driven back home at this time and he will be appearing on Wednesday’s television show doing a promo.

I’ll have a lot more about last night’s show in the new issue, but there are a number of lessons to learn out of it.

AEW is the No. 4 most searched topic on Google today, but that’s 50,000 searches because it’s early in the day. It was not on yesterday’s list.  Alistair Overeem was No 17 yesterday with 50,000, which would be one of the lowest UFC marks of the year. Dwayne Johnson was No. 4 on Wednesday with 500,000 for coming out that he and his family had COVID-19. Wrestling fan Ron Jeremy was No. 8 on Monday with 200,000 for his latest arrest.

As it turns out, based on schedule changes, there is no NHL game on USA this Wednesday. Like last week, NXT will still be airing on Tuesday and there will be a replay on Wednesday. Right now the replay is scheduled by SYFY and not USA.

UFC on ESPN 8 live results: Alistair Overeem vs. Walt Harris

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC on ESPN 8: Overeem vs. Harris, emanating from the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Octagon remains in Jacksonville as the UFC finishes up their stretch of three events in eight days inside the empty arena with a heavyweight main event and an overall strong card.

Former title challenger Alistair Overeem takes on Walt Harris in the five-round headline bout. Overeem is looking to get back into the win column after having his lip split by Jairzinho Rozenstruik in December. Harris returns to action for the first time since the tragic kidnapping and murder of his stepdaughter, fighting with a heavy heart as he looks to move his unbeaten streak to five straight.

In the co-main event, it is a battle in the women’s strawweight division as former title challenger Claudia Gadelha looks to end Angela Hill’s three-fight win streak as Hill fights for the third time this year already. Also on the main card is streaking Dan Ige, winner of five straight, welcoming Edson Barboza to the featherweight division, middleweights Eryk Anders and Krzysztof Jotko meet, and Song Yadong takes on Marlon Vera.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

While all of the offical weigh-ins took place Friday morning, the roster of sluggers and sluggettes for Saturday’s UFC 203 will publicly take to the scales at 6 PM EST for all of the world’s eyes to see.

That means CM Punk will (possibly) be stripping down to his Underoos for the first time in several years for public consumption. Punk hit the scales at 170 pounds, meaning there’s nothing else standing in his way, aside from slipping on a pipe or an attack by HHH, from him making his MMA debut against Mickey Gall Saturday.

The card also features heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem, a redemption fight in Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne, Urijah Faber looking to prove people wrong against rising prospect Jimmie Rivera, a Sempervive special in Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Andrade, and more.
