Sunday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking all the weekend news with Wrestling Observer Radio. You can send questions to the show to [email protected]

The AEW All Access show actually debuted after the University of Connecticut vs. Gonzaga game last night. During the game they announced a sneak preview of the show and it ended up being the first episode. Reader John Athridge just said it was “extremely well done” with no other details. The regular debut is Wednesday night after Dynamite.

For tonight on A&E, the 8 p.m. Biography will be Charlotte Flair and then the 9 p.m. bio will be Rodney “Yokozuna” Anoa’i. The Rivals episode at 10 p.m. is Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar. I could see Rivals possibly beating either bio in 18-49 which happened once recently but never used to happen.

Donald Cerrone was last night named for the 2023 Class of he UFC Hall of Fame. The ceremony is 7/6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Even though last night’s UFC main event with Cory Sandhagen over Marlon Vera via five round decision wasn’t a close fight, judge Joel Ojeda gave Vera the last three rounds and a 48-47 win. Sal D’Amato gave Sandhagen all five rounds and Chris Lee only Vera Vera round three. 100% of the media scores from MMA Decisions went to Sandhagen and 75% of them gave Sandhagen all five rounds. Dana White said it was scary it was a split decision and said Sandhagen wasn’t far away from a title shot at 135. Sandhagen challenged Merab Dvalishvili, which does make sense.

The closest decision was Maycee Barber winning 29-28, 28-29 and 30-27 over Andrea Lee. It was 53-47 among media scores and that’s as close as it gets. Round two was the one that decided the fight it seemed.

At this house show in Salt Lake City last night (and likely in Denver tonight), Asuka, after teaming with Michin over Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky, turned heel on Michin after the match.

There was nothing pro wrestling related in the top 20 google searches for any day this past week. Obviously that will change this current week. There were two boxing related top 20 searches yesterday with the David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant fight at 500,000 and in fifth place, which is very strong for a boxing match, and the women’s amateur championships were No. 18 with 20,000. The only thing related to last night’s UFC show was Holly Holm, who beat Yana Santos in the semifinal, being No. 11 with 100,000.

We’re looking for reports from tonight’s WWE house show in Denver with results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]. As of this morning they had more than 9,000 tickets out which is gigantic for a house show these days. Keep in mind when Raw was in Denver the last time they did about 5,500 paid so that’s another sign of how hot the promotion is right now.

PWinsider reported David “Gangrel” Heath is coming in for WrestleMania. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on the show, just that he is coming in. It should be noted that the original plan for Hell in a Cell was at the Royal Rumble and it was to be Demon Balor vs. Brood Edge. They’ve thrown around the Demon thing in interviews teasing that, so the Brood Edge thing could be what the interview on Monday’s show was leaning toward.

Masha Slamovich replaces the injured Mickie James in a four-way with Deonna Purrazzo, Gisele Shaw and Miyu Yamashita on Thursday’s New Japan/Impact joint show at the Globe Theater in Los Angeles which is sold out. It’s notable that it’s a New Japan show, New Japan and Stardom have the same owner but no Stardom talent is on the show and Yamashita is.

The first round of the Stardom Cinderella tournament took place earlier today from the Yokohama Budokan: Finishes are pin, submission or over the top rope an 10:00 time limits. If there is a draw, both women are eliminated from the tournament:

Waka Tsukiyama b Lacy D pin

Saya Iida b Miyu Amasaki pin

Ami Sohrei b Yuna Mizumori over the top rope

Starlight Kid NC Haruka Umesaki both over the top rope together

Xena b Hina pin

Mariah May b Rina pin

Saki Kashima b Momo Kohgo

Mirai b Hanan

Thekla b Koguma

Natsuko Tora b Ruaka

Syuri b Tomoka Inaba

Hazuki NC AZM both over the top rope together

Mai Sakurai b Giulia over the top rope in a huge upset

Natsupoi NC Mina Shirakawa both over the top rope together

Saya Kamitani NC Mayu Iwatani both over the top rope together

Momo Watanabe b Maika over the top rope

Utami Hayashishita d Nanae Takahashi 10:00 time limit expired

Tam Nakano b Himeka

There will be a WWE Viewing Party at Dave & Buster’s on the Franklin Mills Circle for WrestleMania with R-Truth and Sarah Schreiber.

Thanks to Jason Alvaz for the report from the Las Vegas Smackdown show on Friday night.

The WWE was a category on Jeopardy! on Friday night. HHH introduced the category and he, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston, Alexa Bliss and The Miz were on reading the clues. Key stuff was Kingston reading the clue asking about a legend billed as 7-foot-4 and 500 pounds (Andre the Giant). Miz asked the name of the show about giving someone a decisive setback and started in 1999 (Smackdown). HHH talked about beating Mankind in 1997 to win this coveted Rhyming Royal title (King of the Ring); Mysterio asked the name of Mexican freestyle wrestling known and this alliterative two word name (Lucha Libre) and Bliss’ clue was Dave Bautista played Drax the Destroyer in this 2014 movie (Guardians of the Galaxy) (thanks to Brian Henke and Grant Zwarych))

Donald Cerrone suffered his fifth loss in his last six fights, a first round knockout to Alex Morono. He said this was absolutely not his last fight.

WWE

  • Regarding several Ringside News stories this week, most are basically true. Paul Heyman’s stuff was reported as being off script and it wasn’t exactly on the script but obviously it was 100 percent approved.  They also said Paul Levesque has more influence on Smackdown, which is true.  Bruce Prichard is on vacation and wasn’t on the show and Ed Koskey wasn’t there. Dave Kapoor was brought in from NXT to help and the show ran smoothly.  Mia Yim was to debut on the show, and Aleister Black was to have a vignette but both were cut for time constraints. Yim is tentatively scheduled to debut on this coming Friday’s Smackdown show.

UFC

  • Chase Sherman vs. Parker Porter is scheduled for 8/21.
  • Ian Heinisch vs. Nassourdine Imavov is targeted for 7/24.

AEW

  • There were about 1,573 tickets put on sale for Wednesday’s show and thus far 777 remain.
  • For Dark Elevation tomorrow they’ve announced Jon Moxley vs. Danny Limelight, Tay Conti vs. Madi Wrenkowski, Alex Reynolds vs. Isaiah Kassidy and Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy vs. Luther & Serptentico

OTHER NOTES

  • Devin Nicholson explains his departure from SWE in Texas saying: SWE Fury head booker Teddy Long told him to leave Texas and go back to Canada after a 6 month relationship with SWE Fury where Hannibal was their lead interviewer and operated SWE’s youtube channel.  He claimed he brought it from only 400 subscribers last November to nearly 20K subscribers this week when they released him. They were averaging about $1500/month in YouTube revenue from nothing.  Hannibal gave them his Wrestlecon table to use and helped book and transport talent among other office duties. Long also unbooked Shane Douglas and Scorpio from future SWE Events despite Hannibal already buying their plane tickets. Hannibal was Texas Champion as his Blood Hunter character it remains to be seen how they will handle that but as they owe him money he is keeping the Title.

UFC 246 results: Conor McGregor beats Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds

At least for Saturday night at UFC 246, Conor McGregor was the Conor McGregor of old, easily beating Donald Cerrone by TKO at 40 seconds of the first round.

McGregor charged in and missed a big punch, but landed four left shoulder strikes to the face of “Cowboy”, busting up his nose and eye. He followed that up with a left kick to Cerrone’s head that was the beginning of the end. After a few power shots to the grounded Cerrone, Herb Dean wisely called the fight.

Following the fight, McGregor (22-4) took joy in saying he was the first fighter in UFC history to get knockout finishes in three separate weight classes. He didn’t call anyone out specifically, but made veiled references to Jorge Masvidal and Paul Felder. Masvidal was at cageside with his BMF title and has been angling for a big money McGregor fight while Felder was calling the action on the broadcast team. He is scheduled to face Dan Hooker in late-February. Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was also shown on the screen while McGregor was talking.

This is McGregor’s first UFC victory since November 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden.

Cerrone (36-14-0-1) said after the fight that he wasn’t prepared for the shoulder strikes. The 36-year-old said he plans to keep fighting because that’s what he does. He is riding a three-fight losing streak for the first time since 2017.

In other notable main card action, Holly Holm returned to the winner’s circle with a unanimous decision win over Raquel Pennington in a rematch while Anthony Pettis was upset by Carlos Diego Ferreira by second round submission to open up the PPV main card.

However, the biggest upset of the night was in the final fight of the prelims as Roxanne Modafferi defeated Maycee Barber by unanimous decision. Modafferi was the biggest underdog of the night and was unrelenting in her attack on Barber, cutting her open and taking advantage of what could be a partial MCL tear Barber suffered during the fight.

Be sure to check out the full results from all the action.

UFC 246 live results: Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 246: McGregor vs. Cowboy, emanating from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The UFC starts their 2020 year off with the return of the biggest star in mixed martial arts history as former two-division UFC champion “The Notorious” Conor McGregor returns to action against future Hall Of Famer Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event.

McGregor fights for the first time since October 2018 and is seeking his first win since November 2016 as he kicks off what he calls his 2020 season where he says is preparing to fight at least three times. Cerrone is looking to end a two-fight losing skid after suffering back-to-back losses to Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje.

In the co-main event, former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm will square off in a rematch against former title challenger Raquel Pennington. These two first met in February 2015 at UFC 184 in Holm’s UFC debut, which she won by a close split decision.

Also on the main card is a lightweight bout between former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis and Diego Ferreira.

The prelims on ESPN will be headlined by a women’s flyweight bout between Roxanne Modafferi and highly-touted undefeated prospect Maycee Barber. Also on the prelims is an exciting featherweight bout between Andre Fili and Sodiq Yusuff.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

Conor McGregor, Donald Cerrone both make weight for UFC 246

This story was updated at 2:30 PM Eastern.

Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone both made weight Friday at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, making their Saturday UFC 246 main event official.

Both men came in at 170 pounds. Cerrone was the first on the scale at 9 AM local time while McGregor weighed in at 9:38 AM local time.

Both looked to be in excellent shape, especially McGregor who didn’t have to cut weight after fighting at lightweight and feathweight for the majority of his career. Cerrone, who has mainly fought at lightweight with a few welterweight bouts, said at Thursday’s media day that he was at 174 pounds, so he had to cut several pounds.

McGregor requested the fight be at 170 pounds during negotiations as he didn’t feel the need for either man to have to cut a lot of weight.

In other news, Alexa Grasso missed weight badly, weighing in at 121.5 pounds, 5.5 pounds over the strawweight limit. After some deliberation, her fight with Claudia Gadelha was canceled due to the weight difference and other health issues.

All other fighters made their contracted weight.

Conor McGregor-Donald Cerrone booked for January’s UFC 246

The long-awaited return of former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is finally in sight.

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto via UFC president Dana White, McGregor has signed his contract to face former title contender and fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246 on Saturday, January 18th in Las Vegas, NV. The fight will be at welterweight and not lightweight where the two have spent time during their careers.

White said McGregor has signed and Cerrone “is set to go”.

The 31-year-old McGregor (21-4) hasn’t been in action since losing via submission to rival and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018. Due to his boxing match with Floyd Mayweather and other outside-the-cage factors, he has fought just once in the Octagon since August 2016.

The 36-year-old Cerrone (36-13-0-1) is coming off a two-fight losing streak with finishes at the hands of top contenders Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje, respectively. This will be his first fight at welterweight since a first round submission win over Mike Perry in November 2018. He fought 10 times in the UFC at 170 pounds with a 6-4 record.

The two have been angling for this fight for quite some time and had a verbal skirmish back in September 2015 at a UFC press conference that will get played quite a bit in the promotion for this fight.

The ending of Super ShowDown brought a scary end to what was an embarrassing night for WWE.

Goldberg vs. The Undertaker reinforced the amount of risk that exists when you put two 50-year-old wrestlers against each other. The match was laid out exactly as it should have been and was on its way to being good, but things fell apart when Goldberg got knocked out.

Goldberg (who already had a mark on his forehead going into the match) got busted open when he went for a spear into the corner and rammed his head into the post less than three minutes in. From there, things only got worse.

UFC 238 live results: Two title fights, Ferguson vs. Cerrone

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 238: Cejudo vs. Moraes, emanating from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

The Octagon heads back to the Windy City with a stacked fight card featuring two title fights, a lightweight fight that is eagerly anticipated which could produce one of the best fights of the year, and nine total fights pitting ranked fighters against each other.

In the main event, the vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship is up for grabs as UFC Flyweight Champion Henry Cejudo looks to become a two-division champion when he takes on Marlon Moraes. Cejudo beat TJ Dillashaw in a flyweight title fight in January, and was expected to challenge Dillashaw for the 135-pound title until Dillashaw was stripped of the title due to a failed drug test. In steps Moraes to challenge for the championship, and he comes in riding a four-fight win streak in which he has finished his last three fights in the first round.

In the co-main event, the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship is on the line as champion Valentina Shevchenko defends against challenger Jessica Eye. Shevchenko defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the title in December and makes her first title defense against Eye, who has won three straight fights since dropping back down to 125 pounds last year.

Also on the main card, in the most-anticipated fight of the night, Tony Ferguson looks to extend his 11-fight win streak when he takes on Donald Cerrone, fresh off a win over Al Iaquinta a little over a month ago. The winner of this fight would likely be next in line to challenge for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Other fights on the main card include a bantamweight bout between Jimmie Rivera and Petr Yan, and a heavyweight bout between Tai Tuivasa and Blagoy Ivanov.

The preliminary card is also stacked with ranked fighters, capped off with a potential title eliminator bout in the women’s strawweight division as Tatiana Suarez puts her undefeated record up against Nina Ansaroff. Also, bantamweights Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munhoz look to show their next in line at 135 pounds when they square off, and former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz looks to get back in the win column against Alexa Grasso in women’s strawweight action.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6:15 PM eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on tonight’s event, so send a thumbs up, a thumbs down or a thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and a worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

Our questions about UFC Fight Night Austin and Bellator 194

Pro wrestling is snoozing on this long U.S. holiday weekend, leaving us with two MMA shows to take a look at. Joining me as always is Paul Fontaine and Ryan Frederick to help answer a few questions of the somewhat burning kind.

First, The Cards

Bellator 194 main card: Friday

  • GP Tournament First Round: Matt Mitrione vs. Roy Nelson
  • Patricky Pitbull vs. Derek Campos
  • Liam McGeary vs. Vadim Nemkov
  • Heather Hardy vs. Ana Julaton

UFC Fight Night (Steve) Austin: Sunday

  • Donald Cerrone vs. Yancy Medeiros
  • Derrick Lewis vs. Marcin Tybura
  • James Vick vs. Francisco Trinaldo
  • Thiago Alves vs. Curtis Millender
  • Brian Camozzi vs. Geoffrey Neal
  • Sage Northcutt vs. Thibault Gouti
  • Jared Gordon vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira
  • Oskar Piechota vs. Tim Williams
  • Roberto Sanchez vs. Joby Sanchez
  • Sarah Moras vs. Lucie Pudilova
  • Steven Peterson vs. Brandon Davis
  • Alex Morono vs. Josh Burkman

What fight(s) are you most looking forward to?

Paul: I’m a sucker for “Super” Sage so I really want to see if he can get on a roll. He’s young enough that he could still be a big transcendent star someday if he can back up the hype with results. On the Bellator show, I’m really looking forward to the women’s fight as Hardy has had great fights in both of her previous appearances and has a real star presence. I’ve seen every one of Julaton’s fights and she’s scrappy as hell. This could be a show-stealer.

Ryan: I like the UFC main event between Cerrone and Medeiros as they are both exciting fighters who like to slug it out. Cerrone has been on a skid but is still capable of being one of the best. Medeiros has won three straight since moving up in weight, and has shown a lot more power. He’s also coming off of one of the best fights of 2017 in his win over “Cowboy” Oliveira. This should be exciting. I also am looking forward to Derrick Lewis fighting, because he is just fun.

Nason: There’s a lot of intrigue throughout the two cards, but I’m most interested in both main events. I don’t think Medeiros will ever be a champion, much less a top flight contender, which is why this will tell us a lot about where Cerrone is at. He’s lost three straight coming into this, a first in his long career. I wonder how much is there after his legendary hellacious fight schedule over the last five years. On the Bellator side, I’m hoping we see a big performance out of Mitrione. Nelson is old hat and doesn’t do much for me interest-wise based on the last five-seven UFC fights he had.

Any dark horse fights?

Paul: Brian Camozzi vs Geoffrey Neal on the UFC card. Camozzi is 0-2 in UFC and is probably fighting for his job. Every one of his fights in the last four years has ended in a stoppage for either he or his opponent. Neal’s record is similar and he’s coming off a very impressive first round KO on the Dana White Contender Series last summer.

Nason: Vick has been making a lot of noise about not being able to get good fights and has been on a nice run as of late. If he can top a solid veteran in Trinaldo and look good doing it, he has to get a top 10 dude next. Has to. I’m also interested in seeing how Thiago Alves fares in his return against Curtis Millender. He’s a true veteran but still has that charisma that makes you turn your head, even for a few minutes.

Ryan: Steven Peterson vs. Brandon Davis on the UFC card. Both are mostly unknown, but have had exciting fights on the regional scene. Davis stepped in on short notice in his last fight (his UFC debut) and is looking to rebound from that loss. Also, Vick vs. Trinaldo should be good. Both are underrated at 155 pounds and this is a potential breakout fight for both.

Any fights a bit overrated?

Paul: The main event of the Bellator show is a couple big names who are well past their prime. It is likely to be a three round boring fight as Mitrione’s best path to victory is knocking out Nelson early which is tough to do. Nelson is likely to clinch up with him on the cage all night in an attempt to tire him out, but he’ll do nothing to try and put Mitrione away.

Ryan: I’m not so interested in the main event of the Bellator show. I feel they could have matched up both Nelson and Mitrione in other fresh matchups. They’ve already fought and Nelson knocked Mitrione out. Nelson has gone down as a fighter while Mitrione is maybe just slightly better than he was then, but not much.

Nason: Look at these couple’a’ Bellator hatahs! Paul mentioned the Hardy-Julaton fight and I need to tell you this: I could care less about Hardy and think they are trying way to hard to get her over. Also, the whole boxing-MMA crossover fight deal? Zzzzzz. Don’t care. Also, enough with the Pitbull brothers already. They’re one of the last few holdovers from the Bjorn Rebney era and I don’t really care about seeing them in a Bellator cage anymore.

Do these shows matter?

Paul: Yes and no. If you care about the Bellator Heavyweight Grand Prix, then obviously yes. The semi-main of that show is probably a #1 contender for their lightweight belt and, in fact, Patricky Pitbull is the #7 lightweight in the world according to FightMatrix.com and is coming off a win over Benson Henderson. As far as the UFC show, in the grand scheme of things, no. But, this show looks like it could be sneaky great. Nothing on this show comes off as looking terribly bad on paper and most of the fights have potential to be very fun.

Ryan: The UFC actually has a real solid card, and Bellator continues the GP tourney, so they do matter. The UFC has one of their most popular fighters in the main event, a good lightweight bout, and Northcutt on the card, so it is somewhat loaded. Bellator also has Hardy on the show, so they loaded that up a tad. The UFC show should be good, and Bellator is kinda just there.

Nason: The Bellator show not so much outside the main event, but there are some interesting stakes in the UFC show. As mentioned above, I’m interested to see where Cerrone, Northcutt, Vick, and Lewis are at. This is essentially a heat check show for some of these younger-ish guys.

Who wins?

Mitrione vs. Nelson

  • Mitrione: Nason, Ryan
  • Nelson: Paul

Cerrone vs. Medeiros

  • Cerrone: Paul, Ryan
  • Medeiros: Nason

Derrick Lewis vs. Marcin Tybura

  • Lewis: Nason, Paul, Ryan

Patricky Pitbull vs. Derek Campos

  • Pitbull: Paul, Ryan, Nason

UFC 214 live results: Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 214: Cormier vs. Jones 2, emanating from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

It is the biggest UFC event of 2017 so far as three title fights headline the most stacked card of the year, with the biggest fight of the year headlining the show.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defends his title against his top rival, former champion Jon Jones, as each man looks for vengeance against the other. Cormier is looking to get an elusive win over Jones after Jones defeated him at UFC 182 in January 2015, while Jones is looking to reclaim his throne as the man to beat at 205 pounds.

In the co-main event, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley looks to make it 365 days as champion at 170 pounds, but he gets a tough test in the form of challenger Demian Maia, the most gifted ground fighter in the sport and winner of seven straight fights. Woodley won the championship from Robbie Lawler on July 30th, 2016, and this will be his third title defense.

In the third title fight on the card, the vacant UFC women’s featherweight championship is up for grabs as the most dominant female fighter in history, Cris “Cyborg” Justino looks to finally wrap UFC gold around her waist when she battles Tonya Evinger. Justino hasn’t lost since her pro debut in May 2005, while Evinger makes her UFC debut on the heels of an 11-fight unbeaten streak.

Also on the main card is a fight that could be a potential “Fight of the Year” candidate as welterweight sluggers Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone square off, and a light heavyweight fight that could determine the next challenger opens the main card as Jimi Manuwa takes on Volkan Oezdemir.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

We are looking for your thoughts on the show, so send a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best fight and worst fight to Dave at [email protected].

UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS | 6:30 PM ET/3:30 PM PT

> Josh Burkman (28-15 1 NC, 6-10 1 NC UFC) vs. Drew Dober (17-8 1 NC, 3-4 1 NC UFC)
Lightweights

Fairly even standup early with Dober trying takedowns and Burkman defending pretty well. Burkman seemed to be hurting Dober with leg kicks but Dober landed a left hook out of nowhere and knocked Burkman out cold.

RESULT – DREW DOBER (18-8) by KO (punch) at 3:04

Dober put over Burkman in his post-fight promo and said it was an honor to fight him. He wants to be ranked and he may not be but he should get a top 15 fight after laying out a vet like Burkman in that fashion. Crowd gave him a nice hand on his way out of the cage.

> Eric Shelton (10-3, 0-1 UFC) vs. Jarrod Brooks (12-0, 0-0 UFC)
Flyweights

Interesting round as Shelton vastly outstruck Brooks with the stats at one pointing having him ahead 46-12. But Brooks got at least 3 takedowns and controlled him most of the round, including a couple of submission attempts. Brooks got a front headlock with about 15 seconds and moved into mount and the buzzer may have saved Shelton. 10-9 Brooks

Really slow start to the round with almost nothing happening for the first couple minutes other than a stuffed takedown attempt by Brooks. Shelton got a takedown at 4:00 and controlled Brooks for about 30 seconds. After Brooks got to his feet, he got a takedown but Shelton got up right before the buzzer. 10-9 Shelton, all tied up after 2 although that round was real close

Crowd really turned on this fight midway through the round as not much was happening. Shelton landed a nice shot that nearly knocked down Brooks about 2 minutes in. With about 15 seconds left, Shelton landed a flying knee. Brooks got a takedown after it but Shelton secured a guillotine as the clock ran out. 10-9 Shelton, 29-28 on my scorecard

RESULT – JARRED BROOKS (13-0) by split decision (29-28 x 2; 28-29)

Brooks said the result was f***ing bulls*** and said he looked terrible. But then when Joe Rogan asked him if he thought he should’ve lost, he said no. He said he’s coming for the f***ing belt….he was just all over the place. Put over Joe Rogan, saying he’s been watching him since Fear Factor. Just a profanity laced promo that went nowhere.

> Kailin Curran (4-4, 1-4 UFC) vs. Alexandra Albu (2-0, 1-0 UFC)
Women’s Strawweights

Best round of the night so far. Albu was landing all kind of strikes from everywhere and even pulled guard at one point. Curran was landing a lot as well but it seemed as if Albu’s were landing harder and affecting Curran more. She also had a couple of submission attempts. Curran was controlling the clinch game on the feet though. 10-9 Albu after 1

Antoher really good round. Albu was more active with a wide variety of strikes and got a couple of really nice headlock takedowns. She didn’t do much on the ground and Curran was able to get up fairly easily. They showed the strike stats at one point and it was 66-63 for Curran but Albu was definitely landing the harder shots. 10-9 Albu, 20-18

Great third round from Curran. Probably not enough to take the fight or even get a draw but she looked awesome. She had her best punch combo of the fight about a minute in. 2 minutes in, Albu got a headlock takedown but Curran scrambled into top position and controlled most of the rest of the round on the ground, doing a lot of damage. Albu got to her feet and got a late takedown but Curran was up quickly and got another of her own.

RESULT – ALEKSANDRA ALBU (3-0) by unanimous decision (29-28 x 3)

According to Dave Meltzer, who’s live at cageside, the crowd gave the fight a standing ovation at the end but did boo the decision as you could hear on TV.

FXX PRELIMS | 8 PM ET/5 PM PT

> Andre Fili (16-4, 4-3 UFC) vs. Calvin Kattar (16-2, 0-0 UFC)
Featherweights

Kattar took this fight on short notice and looked pretty good. Round was fairly even on the feet with Fili controlling the pace but Kattar slightly more active and it was looking to be a tossup round until Kattar got a late takedown and landed a ton of punches in the last 15 seconds to steal the round. 10-9 Kattar

Similar round in the sense it was fairly even almost the whole way. It felt like Fili was maybe winning the round slightly but Kattar landed the best punch combo of the fight with out about 15 seconds and really seemed to hurt Fili 10-9 Kattar, 20-18 overall

Fili came out more aggressive and was winning the round until Kattar got a takedown with about 45 seconds left. He did some ground and pound but Fili got up quickly. You could make a case for Fili taking the third but I’ve got it 30-27 Kattar. Great debut either way

RESULT – CALVIN KATTAR (17-2) by unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

> Renato Moicano (#9, 11-0-1, 3-0 UFC) vs. Brian Ortega (#8, 11-0 1 NC, 3-0 1 NC UFC)
Featherweights

Close first round fought entirely on the feet. Every time Ortega would land a combo, Moicano would answer back with one of his own. Moicano also landed a couple of unanswered combos and had a kick combo as well. Ortega landed a flying knee at the end of the round but didn’t really do any damage. 10-9 Moicano but really close

Almost entirely on the feet again this round and Moicano started to take over. He was ahead 26-7 in strikes landed about 3 minutes in and it didn’t even seem as close as that. He seemed headed for a 10-8 round but Ortega picked it up a bit in the last minute. Moicano scored a late takedown to remove any doubt. 10-9 Moicano, 20-18 overall.

Ortega came out stronger in this round but Moicano picked up the pace about 2 minutes in and seemed to be cruising to another round win and the fight. He made the critical mistake of taking Ortega down and Ortega secured a guillotine on the way down and Moicano tapped quickly.

RESULT – BRIAN ORTEGA (12-0) by submission (guillotine choke) at 2:59 of the 3rd round

In his post-fight promo, Ortega brought up that he and Moicano were the only unbeaten fighters in the Top 10 and said if someone’s going to beat him, he’d like to see how. He fell short of calling anyone out though.

> Aljamain Sterling (#8, 13-2, 5-2 UFC) vs. Renan Barao (#13 FW, 34-4 1 NC, 9-3 UFC)
140-pound Catchweights

Fast start to the round with both guys throwing a lot of kicks and punches. Barao got a takedown just over a minute in and controlled Sterling on the ground for the rest of the round. Sterling had a couple of submission attempts from his back but Barao outstruck him badly…..total strikes were 30-10 at one point. 10-9 Barao, almost a 10-8

Second round was the exact opposite of the first with the fast start and then a takedown by Sterling at about 1:30. Sterling dominated the rest of the way and did way more damage than Barao did in the first round and I thought he did enough to get the 10-8. Barao did have a brief arm triangle submission attempt but Sterling closed strong, opening up a cut with elbows. 10-8 Sterling, 19-18 Sterling after 2

Closer third round. Sterling was definitely more active and Barao was really getting tired toward the end. There were a couple long cage clinches with Sterling controlling but neither guy did much and the ref had to break them both up. With about 30 seconds left, Barao took him down and while Sterling was trying to get up, Barao spiked him to the ground head first. It was almost enough to steal the round but not quite. 10-9 Sterling, 29-27 overall

RESULT – ALJAMIAIN STERLING (14-2) by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27 and 30-26)

> Ricardo Lamas (#3, 17-5, 8-3 UFC) vs. Jason Knight (#15, 17-2, 4-1 UFC)
Featherweights

This was awesome. Lamas got an early takedown but Knight was very active from his back with several submission attempts and he had Lamas tied up to where he couldn’t do anything. When Lamas finally got to his feet, he lit up Knight with punches on the feet. Knight was rocked badly and just wouldn’t go down, despite eating a ton of punches. Knight shot for a takedown but ended up on his back and Lamas finished him with hard ground and pound. Knight protested the stoppage but could barely stand and was clearly out of it.

RESULT – RICARDO LAMAS (18-5) by TKO at 4:34

On the studio show, both Michael Bisping and Kenny Florian picked Cormier and Woodley to retain their titles in the top 2 matches on the PPV.

PPV MAIN CARD | 10 PM ET/7 PM PT

> Jimi Manuwa (#3, 17-2, 6-2 UFC) vs. Volkan Oezdemir (#5, 14-1, 2-0 UFC)
Light Heavyweights

They clinched up early and Manuwa worked him to the cage. Oezdemir punched out of it and rocked him with punches from the clinch. As Manuwa was backing up, Oezdemir knocked him out. Scary performance as that’s two straight KOs in less than 30 seconds. He may get a title shot off of this

RESULT – VOLKAN OEZDEMIR (15-1) by KO (punch) at 22 seconds

Oezdemir said “I don’t know what’s going on but I have dynamite in my hands”. He went on to call out the winner of the main event. This guy went from a nobody to beating a top 3 contender in less than a year and could be fighting for the title.

> Robbie Lawler (#3, 27-11 1 NC, 12-5 UFC) vs. Donald Cerrone (#6, 32-8 1 NC, 19-5 UFC)
Welterweights

Lawler opened strong, clinching up in the center with Cerrone and landing a ton of punches and elbows. He had 23 strikes in the first minute. It got a little more even after that and then Cerrone kind of took over late, getting a takedown and landing a nice knee/head kick combo. Great opening round. 10-9 Lawler

Cerrone fought much smarter in round 2. He kept his distance, not letting Lawler clinch with him and landed strikes while also controlling the pace. By the end of the round, he had gained the lead in strikes landed and took the round easily. 10-9 Cerrone, 19-19 heading into the third

Close final round. Lawler was much more active than he’d been in the 2nd and seemed to be landing the harder shots but striking stats showed them basically even, with Cerrone holding a 30-29 advantage. Cerrone also had several takedown attempts, all of which were defended by Lawler. Both guys were bloody at the end and the crowd gave this a standing ovation in the last minute. 10-9 Lawler but could go either way.

RESULT – ROBBIE LAWLER (28-11) by unanimous decision (29-28 x 3)

Heavy boos from the crowd after the decision. Lawler said almost exactly what I did. “I won the first, he won the second and the third was up in the air”. He dedicated the fight to Matt Hughes, who’s still recovering from his accident. Lawler said he’s not worried about the title and he wants to visit Hughes.

> Cris “Cyborg” Justino (17-1 1 NC, 2-0 UFC) vs. Tonya Evinger (19-5 1 NC, 0-0 UFC)
UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship

Measured performance by Cyborg. She never seemed close to finishing Evinger but dominated every second of the round. Evinger actually had a couple flash takedowns but Cyborg was up immediately and did damage on the way up. 10-8 Cyborg

Not quite as dominant a round for Cyborg here and she seemed to be slowing down just a bit at the end of the round. Cyborg landed a lot of punch combos but Evinger was starting to evade strikes at the end of it and even landed some of her own in the last minute. Cyborg did do a lot of damage with leg kicks. 10-9 Cyborg, 20-17

Cyborg dropped Evinger with a punch combo early but refused to go to the ground with her. After the ref stood Evinger up, Cyborg initiated a cage clinch and then finished her with knees standing.

RESULT – CRIS CYBORG (18-1) by TKO (knees) at 1:56 of Round 3 NEW FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION

In her post-fight promo, Cyborg said that she feels like she’s the best fighter she’s ever been. She says she is just now learning how to “fight” and was just relying on her abilities before this. No call-out since there are no other fighters in the division.

> Tyron Woodley (C, 17-3-1, 7-2-1 UFC) vs. Demian Maia (#1, 25-6, 19-6 UFC)
UFC Welterweight Championship

Maia had at least 8 takedown attempts and Woodley blocked every one. Woodley only landed occasional punches standing but messed up Maia’s eye somehow during one of the early takedown attempts. It wasn’t much, but enough to take the round 10-9

Crowd hating this feet. Several more takedown attempts by Maia, all blocked. Seemed like Woodley landed a few more punches than in the first. Total strikes were 15-5 at the end of the second and that was total in the whole fight. 10-9 Woodley, 20-18

Same story in the third. More failed takedown attempts by Woodley. Punches by Woodley and he mixed in leg kicks as well. Maia bleeding from a cut on his nose, swollen on both eyes and his knees are cut up from all the missed takedowns, 13 in total. 10-9 Woodley, 30-27

Maia now 0/16 on takedown attempts but he did land a few more strikes this round and Woodley did almost nothing but avoid takedowns. He did land the hardest punch of the round though and may have taken it. 10-9 Woodley, 40-36. Crowd loudly booing this fight

I think they may have said that Woodley had 26 takedown attempts in total, stuffed on every one. They also broke the record for fewest strikes landed in a welterweight title fight over 5 rounds. By a lot. This round was exactly the same as the rest. Woodley with a 45-23 advantage in significant strikes landed. Crowd chanted BORING and did the Bray Wyatt cell phone gimmick during the round and booed the hell out of it at the end.

RESULT – TYRON WOODLEY (18-3-1) by unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46 x 2)

Crowd booed the decision and every word of Woodley’s promo. He challenged GSP for November 4 in MSG. That fight will be terrible but should do business.

Rogan announced to the crowd about the breaking the fewest strikes record and crowd booed that too.

> Daniel Cormier (C, 19-1, 8-1 UFC) vs. Jon Jones (#1, 22-1, 16-1 UFC)
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship

Jones outstruck Cormier in the round by almost a 2 to 1 margin but Cormier came on strong in the last 30 seconds, including a couple of combos that rocked Jones and he may have stolen the round 10-9. Great atmosphere with loud crowd both pro and negative for Cormier. Loud reactions whenever he landed anything in particular.

Cormier was actually starting to find his rhythm and land more strikes, closing the gap in strikes landed. Then Jones landed a head kick that rocked him and he never recovered. Jones then knocked him down with punches and finished him on the ground with punches and elbows to the head. John McCarthy gave Cormier a lot of time to recover, maybe too much time but finally stopped it.

RESULT – JON JONES (23-1) by TKO (punches and elbows) at 3:01 of Round 3 NEW LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

Cormier refused to stand for the winner’s announcement, which drew loud boos. This was the first stoppage loss of his career.

Jones had an emotional promo. He said that for everyone that’s every let themselves down, this is what you can do. He said he had to do a lot of right things in his life to get to this point and he thanked all of his fans and also thanked the haters, who motivated him to prove them wrong.

Jones thanked Daniel Cormier for being his biggest rival and biggest motivator. Said he has been a model champion, a model father and a model person. Said he is a true champion for the rest of his life. He went over to embrace him.

Camera panned to Cormier, who was crying like crazy and the crowd booed him a little bit.

Rogan interviewed Cormier, who was still crying. Says the fight was going well and he didn’t know what happened.

Jones called out Brock Lesnar. “IF you want to find out what it’s like to get your ass kicked by someone 40 lbs lighter than you, get your ass back to the Octagon”. Announcers completely no sold this.

UFC 214 Observer Panel Picks: Three title fights, Lawler vs. Cerrone

It’s the biggest UFC show of the year so far as Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier step into the Octagon in Anaheim to renew their rivalry. Jones won the first time out to retain the light heavyweight title, but his antics outside the cage cost him his belt.

DC picked up the slack in the meantime, and he looks to defend his belt for the third time against his biggest rival. In the co-main event slot, Demian Maia gets his long-deserved shot at the welterweight title and division kingpin Tyron Woodley.

Invicta FC bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger debuts for the company as she faces former Invicta and Strikeforce featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino. The winner claims the UFC women’s featherweight title, which was vacated by Germaine de Randamie.

Despite the other title fights, the second most anticipated bout on the card may very well be former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler taking on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. This was originally scheduled as one of the featured bouts for UFC 213 during International Fight Week but was pushed back to this show due to injury.

Rounding out the main card, and likely kicking off the pay-per-view, is a fight that could determine the next challenger for the winner of the main event. 205 pounders Jimi Manuwa and Volkan Oezdemir will throw down in a war that promises to be quick and violent.

Main event for the UFC light heavyweight title — Champion Daniel Cormier (19-1) vs. Jon Jones (22-1)

These two may hate each other more than any two fighters in MMA. Cormier needs this win to prove that he’s the real champ. Jones wants to regain the belt that he never really lost. It’s a simple story.

One of the compelling things about this fight is what’s next. Jones pretty much cleaned out the division during his title run, and Cormier hasn’t had much trouble with anyone besides Jones. There are heavy rumors that Jones might move up to heavyweight after this fight, with Brock Lesnar as his most speculated on first opponent in that division.

  • Jones NR; -260 betting favorite — Frederick, FRB, Juon, Meltzer, Lawlor, Sawyer, Nason, Pollock, Fontaine, Bixenspan, Sempervive

For the UFC welterweight title — Champion Tyron Woodley (17-3-1) vs. Demian Maia (22-6)

Maia won seven straight to earn this shot, most in dominating fashion. Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler to win the title but escaped by the skin of his teeth after two fights with number one contender Steven “Wonderboy” Thompson that really didn’t settle anything.

What’s interesting here is that all three people who’ve beaten Woodley in his career have also beaten Maia — and by the exact same method. Rory McDonald and Jake Shields hold decision wins over both and Nate Marquardt has knocked them both out. Woodley is four years younger, which could end up being the deciding factor here.

  • Woodley #1; -193 betting favorite — FRB, Juon, Meltzer, Lawlor, Sawyer, Nason, Pollock, Fontaine, Sempervive
  • Maia #3; +180 betting underdog — Frederick, Bixenspan

For the vacant UFC women’s featherweight title — Cris “Cyborg” Justino (17-1) vs. Tonya Evinger (19-6)

Cyborg has already fought twice in the UFC, winning both of her fights via KO. She has not lost since her pro debut 12 years ago. Evinger’s run has been impressive as well, with 10 straight wins that took her to the Invicta bantamweight title (which she vacated in order to get the UFC shot).

Much has been made of the fact that Evinger wasn’t “good enough” for the UFC bantamweight division, but two of the women she successfully defended against were signed by the UFC after their fights.

Cyborg has rarely faced anyone the caliber of Evinger. Aside from Marloes Coenen and Leslie Smith, none of her opponents have done much of anything in MMA since facing her.

  • Cyborg #1; -940 betting favorite — Frederick, FRB, Juon, Meltzer, Lawlor, Sawyer, Nason, Pollock, Bixenspan, Sempervive
  • Evinger #7 at women’s bantamweight; +971 betting underdog — Fontaine

Robbie Lawler (27-11) vs. Donald Cerrone (32-8) (welterweights)

When Lawler was fighting for the middleweight title in Strikeforce and Cerrone was competing for the lightweight title in WEC, who’d have thought this fight was possible? Now they find themselves in the same weight class in UFC and it’s possibly the best fight on the card on one of the biggest shows of the year.

Cerrone hasn’t fought since January, which is like a decade by his schedule. Lawler is one year removed from losing his title to Tyron Woodley, with this being his first fight since. The winner here is probably one win away from a shot at the Woodley-Maia winner.

  • Lawler #4; -145 betting favorite — Frederick, FRB, Juon, Meltzer, Lawlor, Sawyer, Nason, Pollock, Fontaine, Bixenspan, Sempervive

Jimi Manuwa (17-2) vs. Volkan Oezdemir (14-1) (light heavyweights)

These may be the two best light heavyweights in UFC who have never faced either Cormier or Jones, and this very well could be a number one contender’s fight. Manuwa has won two straight, both by KO, since being knocked out by former title contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Oezdemir thrust himself into title talk by stunning Misha Cirkunov and knocking him out in under 30 seconds. Both men also hold wins over top contender Ovince Saint Preux and a win here, especially if it’s impressive, is probably a ticket to the biggest fight in either man’s career.

  • Manuwa #6; -176 betting favorite — Frederick, FRB, Juon, Meltzer, Sawyer, Nason, Pollock, Bixenspan, Sempervive
  • Oezdemir #10; +161 betting underdog — Lawlor, Fontaine

**********

The rest of the card —

Ricardo Lamas (17-5) vs. Jason Knight (18-2) (featherweights)

  • Lamas #4; +110 betting underdog
  • Knight #14; -112 betting favorite

Renan Barao (34-4) vs. Aljamain Sterling (13-2) (140 lb catchweight)

  • Barao #17 featherweight; +115 betting underdog
  • Sterling #11 bantamweight; -115 betting favorite

Bryan Ortega (11-0) vs. Renato Carneiro (11-0-1) (featherweights)

  • Ortega #11; +143 betting underdog
  • Carneiro #8; -149 betting favorite

Andre Fili (16-4) vs. Calvin Kattar (16-2) (featherweights)

  • Fili #38; -350 betting favorite
  • Kattar #130; +336 betting underdog

Jarred Brooks (12-0) vs. Eric Shelton (10-3) (flyweights)

  • Brooks #29; -141 betting favorite
  • Shelton #36; +130 betting underdog

Kailin Curran (4-4) vs. Aleksandra Albu (2-0) (strawweights)

  • Curran NR; +138 betting underdog
  • Albu NR; -151 betting favorite

Josh Burkman (28-15) vs. Drew Dober (17-8) (lightweights)

  • Burkman #82; +269 betting underdog
  • Dober #98; -300 betting favorite

Action begins with the Fight Pass prelims at 6:30 p.m. ET and moves over to FXX at 8 p.m. ET. The main card airs on PPV at 10 p.m. ET, and our own Dave Meltzer will be cageside covering the show. Check out the links below for more coverage:

UFC on FOX 23 live results: Valentina Shevchenko vs. Julianna Pena

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC On FOX 23: Shevchenko vs. Pena, emanating from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.

The event is headlined by a five-round bout in the women’s bantamweight division, which could be a title eliminator bout, as first-ranked Valentina Shevchenko takes on second-ranked Julianna Pena. Shevchenko comes into the fight after winning a convincing decision over former champion Holly Holm in July. Shevchenko’s only UFC loss came to current champion Amanda Nunes, a bout in which she was winning late. Pena is undefeated in the UFC, having won four straight, and is coming off a win over former title challenger Cat Zingano.

The co-main event is a welterweight bout that has fireworks written all over it as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will square off against Jorge Masvidal. Cerrone has been on fire since moving up to the welterweight division as he has won four straight fights. Masvidal has been calling out Cerrone for a long time, and now he looks to add to his two-fight win streak by derailing Cerrone’s quest for a title shot.

Also on the main card is a heavyweight slugfest as former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski looks to end a three-fight losing skid when he takes on rising heavyweight prospect Francis Ngannou, winner of eight straight fights.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 4 p.m. eastern time with preliminary action all the way through the main card.

UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS | 4 PM ET/1 PM PT

> Jason Gonzalez (10-3, 0-1 UFC) vs. JC Cottrell (17-4, 0-1 UFC)
Lightweights

Gonzalez rocked Cottrell early but Cottell gained the momentum by scoring a takedown. Cottrell was landing from the top before Gonzalez was able to reverse position and get to the feet. Gonzalez grabbed the neck of Cottrell and was able to lock in a D’arce choke and that was it as he forced Cottrell to tap out! Submission win in the opening bout for Jason Gonzalez. After the bout, Gonzalez called out Drew Dober as he wants to avenge the loss he suffered to Dober in his UFC debut.

Official Result- Jason Gonzalez def. JC Cottrell by submission (D’arce choke) at 3:54 of Round 1

> Alexandre Pantoja (16-2, 0-0 UFC) vs. Eric Shelton (10-2, 0-0 UFC)
Flyweights

They traded early in the round with Pantoja getting the better of it with body kicks. Pantoja was able to take the fight to the mat and worked for the choke from the back before Shelton was able to spin free and get on top. They got to the feet and Pantoja landed a big kick but Shelton got a takedown close to the end of the round. A close first round but I score it 10-9 for Pantoja.

Pantoja was getting the better of the striking but Shelton was always able to reverse into takedowns. Pantoja went for a guillotine at one point but it didn’t come close to submitting Shelton. Shelton was able to land a flying knee before Pantoja score a takedown and took over the end of the round as he threatened with submissions from the back. They were pretty even on the striking this round but Pantoja’s ground control scored this round 10-9 for him, and I have Pantoja up 20-18 heading into the final round.

The pace slowed down in the third round considerably. That might be a common theme with the Denver altitude tonight. They stood on the feet and were just trading single punches. Neither man was doing much as the cardio was slowing them down. Pantoja was getting the better of the striking though Shelton stood toe-to-toe with him. This was Pantoja’s round 10-9 as he was the more effective striker. I have the fight 30-27 for Pantoja. This was a very good fight despite the slower-paced third round. Big mix of scores all over the place in this fight, and Pantoja took the fight on two of the three scorecards to get a split decision. It was definitely a close fight and one that could have gone either way.

Official Result- Alexandre Pantoja def. Eric Shelton by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMS | 5 PM ET/2 PM PT

> Marcos Rogerio de Lima (14-4-1, 3-2 UFC) vs. Jeremy Kimball (14-5, 0-0 UFC)
Light Heavyweights (de Lima missed weight, coming in at 209.6 pounds)

de Lima landed some big punches early but Kimball was firing back. Kimball tripped inside the Octagon and fell to the mat and de Lima capitalized and started landing monstorous punches from the top before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Unfortunate end for Kimball as de Lima gets the early stoppage win.

Official Result- Marcos Rogerio de Lima def. Jeremy Kimball by TKO (punches) at 2:21 of Round 1

> Eric Spicely (9-1, 1-1 UFC) vs. Alessio Di Chirico (10-1, 1-1 UFC)
Middleweights

They traded early on before Di Chirico got a takedown. Spicely locked in a triangle choke and started squeezing tighter and got Di Chirico to tap out. Slick submission win for Spicely in the opening round as he makes quick work. Spicely called out Dan Kelly for a fight in his post-fight interview.

Official Result- Eric Spicely def. Alessio Di Chirico by submission (triangle choke) at 2:14 of Round 1

> Henrique da Silva (12-1, 2-1 UFC) vs. Jordan Johnson (6-0, 0-0 UFC)
Light Heavyweights

Johnson got a big takedown early on and locked in an anaconda choke and had it on deep. Johnson let it go, though. da Silva was looking gassed out early after the choke. Johnson was controlling the pace and landing some big punches as da Silva was missing, and the first round definitely belonged to him after a late takedown. 10-9 first round for Johnson.

Johnson got a huge takedown at the start of the second round. Johnson was completely dominant from the top position landing lots of ground-and-pound. They got to their feet but Johnson was doubling up on his punches as da Silva just looked exhausted. Big round for Johnson as I had it 10-9, and Johnson up 20-18.

Johnson got another takedown at the start of the third. Johnson would get to his feet and the crowd would boo da Silva staying on the mat. da Silva was extremely gassed out. Johnson was landing big from the top and in complete control as the fight went the distance. The most dominant round of the fight for Johnson as that was a 10-8 final round. I have it 30-26 for Johnson. Johnson had a clean sweep on the scorecards, but no 10-8 scores from any of the judges in any round.

Official Result- Jordan Johnson def. Henrique da Silva by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

> Bobby Nash (8-1, 0-0 UFC) vs. Li Jingliang (11-4, 3-2 UFC)
Welterweights

They were trading back and forth and Jingliang rocked Nash with some big punches. Nash had some takedowns defended but he dropped Jingliang with a big left hook and Nash had a rear-naked choke locked in. Jingliang survived to the end of the round but took a beating late. 10-9 Nash in the first round.

Nash rocked Jingliang with a nice combination and went to the grappling and had Jingliang clinched up against the fence. Jingliang got a brief takedown but Nash scrambled up. Jingliang then dropped Nash with a big right hand and one more punch on the ground ended the fight. This was a great fight and a big knockout win for Jingliang.

Official Result- Li Jingliang def. Bobby Nash by knockout (punches) at 4:45 of Round 2

> Raphael Assuncao (#4, 23-5, 7-2 UFC) vs. Aljamain Sterling (#7, 12-1, 4-1 UFC)
Bantamweights

There were a lot of feints from Sterling as he was dodging punches from Assuncao. Sterling was keeping Assuncao at a distance with his long reach but Assuncao was able to land some punches. This was a close round as neither did a ton to win the round, but Sterling landing a lot of kicks may have gotten him the round. I have it 10-9 for Sterling.

Strange moment early in the second with a low blow from Assuncao that wasn’t called, but he didn’t jump on a hurt Sterling. Fans were booing the action in the round as not much was happening. Sterling wasn’t throwing any punches in the round and Assuncao was far more active. They went back to trading kicks and the fans were growing restless with the action in this round. They traded leg kicks late. I have round two 10-9 for Assuncao, and it tied up at 19-19.

They were trading and the pace was picking up. Sterling was landing more and keeping Assuncao at good range. The fans were still booing because while the activity picked up a little, it wasn’t all that exciting. Sterling started landing more late and threatened with takedowns in the round. Assuncao was missing more. This is a close fight overall. I have round three 10-9 for Sterling, and Sterling winning 29-28 overall, but this one will be interesting on the scorecards. Assuncao took the fight on two scorecards, which seemed like a good call as it was real close.

Official Result- Raphael Assuncao def. Aljamain Sterling by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

> Nate Marquardt (35-16-2, 13-9 UFC) vs. Sam Alvey (29-8 1 NC, 6-3 UFC)
Middleweights

They had a grueling clinch battle against the fence. Both were switching positions but neither was able to get a distinct advantage. Not a whole lot of action went on and then when the ten-second block sounded, Alvey landed a big knee and came on with a late flurry that likely got him the round. It was really a nothing round for the first 98 percent of it. I have it 10-9 for Alvey.

Marquardt came on with a flurry as Alvey was clearing looking to set up a counter punch, but it was costing him early in this round. Alvey knocked Marquardt down at one point but did nothing to capitalize on it. Marquardt was bleeding from his cheek. Neither man was doing much and the crowd began booing. Alvey landed a good combination at the end of the round. This one was more clear for him. 10-9 Alvey in the second round and I have him up 20-18.

Marquardt got a takedown in the third round and had Alvey planted against the fence in the clinch. He took Alvey down again and was working for the choke. Alvey was able to work back to his feet and was starting to get the edge on the feet with just over a minute left. Neither man did a lot in the last minute before Marquardt landed a combo in the closing seconds. I have round three 10-9 for Marquardt. I have the fight 29-28 Alvey overall. It will come down to how the first round was scored in my eyes. All three judges had the fight for Alvey. Alvey called for a fight against Jack Marshman in his post-fight interview.

Official Result- Sam Alvey def. Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

FOX MAIN CARD | 8 PM ET/5 PM PT

> Alex Caceres (12-9 1 NC, 7-7 1 NC UFC) vs. Jason Knight (15-2, 2-1 UFC)
Featherweights

They spent most of the round on the feet and exchanging. Caceres showed good head movement and good overall footwork to keep away from Knight and was more accurate with his strikes. Caceres was winning the round until very late when Knight got a big takedown and had Caceres locked in a rear-naked choke, but the round ended before he could finish. A 10-9 round for Knight.

They were trading back-and-forth again before Knight got a takedown again. Knight was threatening from the back with a choke and punches and had Caceres planted firmly on the mat. Knight got the choke locked in and he forced Caceres to tap! Knight with a big submission win in the second round and he has now won three straight fights. Knight called for a fight against Doo Ho Choi for his next fight.

Official Result- Jason Knight def. Alex Caceres by submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:21 of Round 2

> Andrei Arlovski (#7, 25-13 1 NC, 14-7 UFC) vs. Francis Ngannou (#10, 9-1, 4-0 UFC)
Heavyweights

They were trading back-and-forth and then Ngannou landed a big right uppercut that sent Arlovski airborne and down and then Ngannou finished him off with some more punches. A very violent finish by Ngannou, who has shown to be a legitimate threat in the heavyweight division.

Official Result- Francis Ngannou def. Andrei Arlovski by TKO (punches) at 1:32 of Round 1

> Donald Cerrone (#5, #11 LW, 32-7 1 NC, 19-4 UFC) vs. Jorge Masvidal (#12, 31-11, 8-4 UFC)
Welterweights

They were standing and trading early on. Cerrone was landing kicks but Masvidal was landing some punches. Cerrone went for a takedown but it was defended, though he landed a head kick. Masvidal’s lead leg was all red from eating the leg kicks from Cerrone. Masvidal landed a big right hand that dropped Cerrone and he landed some punches. Herb Dean stepped in but it happened to be right at the end of the round. Dean said the fight wasn’t over and it was the end of the round. Masvidal stole it at the end. 10-9 Masvidal.

Masvidal knocked Cerrone down again and Cerrone got up but Masvidal was landing to the body and Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight. Masvidal with the biggest win of his career and that ends Cerrone’s undefeated run at welterweight.

Official Result- Jorge Masvidal def. Donald Cerrone by TKO (punches) at 1:00 of Round 2

> Valentina Shevchenko (#1, 13-2, 2-1 UFC) vs. Julianna Pena (#2, 8-2, 4-0 UFC)
Women’s Bantamweights

Pena got an early clinch and pushed Shevchenko to the fence. Shevchenko swept to a takedown but Pena was able to scramble up and they were back in the clinch. Shevchenko got another takedown into side control. Shevchenko got into the guard and ended the round on top. First round was for Shevchenko 10-9.

It was another clinch battle with Pena having Shevchenko pressed against the fence. Pena got a takedown and was in the full guard of Shevchenko. Pena was doing enough to keep the fight on the mat but Shevchenko was active on the bottom with good defense. Shevchenko got an armbar in from bottom and Pena tapped out! That armbar came out of nowhere and Pena was in all sorts of trouble. Shevchenko likely secured herself the next title shot at Amanda Nunes. Nunes came into the Octagon after the fight and they exchanged words post-fight.

Official Result- Valentina Shevcheko def. Julianna Pena by submission (armbar) at 4:29 of Round 2

UFC 206 live results: Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis

Welcome to F4WOnline.com’s live coverage of UFC 206: Holloway vs. Pettis, eminating from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The event is headlined by a battle for the Interim UFC Featherweight Championship as Max Holloway takes on former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis. This bout is a replacement for the original main event, which was scheduled to be UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier defending against Anthony Johnson.

This fight will only be a title fight for Holloway after Pettis missed weight on Friday. If Pettis were to win, there would be no interim champion, so there is a lot on the line for Holloway. Holloway has put together one of the most impressive win streaks in the UFC, having won nine straight fights.

The co-main event is a potential barnburner in the welterweight division as Donald Cerrone looks to extend his three-fight win streak when he takes on Matt Brown. A featherweight bout between sluggers Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi, and a middleweight bout between Tim Kennedy and Kelvin Gastelum also highlight the main card.

Follow along with our live coverage of the event beginning at 6:30 PM eastern time with preliminary action all the way thru the main card.

Makovsky was able to defend some takedown attempts from Ortiz before Ortiz finally got him down and moved to mount and was landing some strikes. They got up and Ortiz drug it down for a moment late. Makovsky got a late takedown but Ortiz was able to scramble out onto top. I had the third 10-9 for Ortiz and Ortiz winning 30-27 overall. Ortiz got the decision, but one judge gave the fight to Makovsky. I wouldn’t agree with that at all, but the right guy won.

Official Result- Dustin Ortiz def. Zach Makovsky by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

> Jason Saggo (12-2, 3-1 UFC) vs. Rustam Khabilov (20-3, 6-2 UFC)
Lightweights- Khabilov missed weight, coming in at 158.5 pounds

Khabilov was on the attack early with punches and kicks but Saggo came back and landed some kicks before Khabilov landed two big right hands and scored a takedown. Khabilov spent the rest of the round in the guard but was mostly neutralized by Saggo in the guard. It was still a 10-9 round for Khabilov. Both were tentative on their feet landing kicks before Saggo landed a jumping kick. Khabilov was being patient on the feet and found the takedown with less than two minutes to go in the round. Saggo was able to get to his feet but started eating a lot of huge strikes from Khabilov. He had Saggo in trouble late but Saggo escaped. That was definitely a 10-9 round for Khabilov and I had him winning a clear 30-27 decision. He took the decision on all the scorecards, and Khabilov called out Kevin Lee in his post-fight interview.

Official Result- Rustam Khabilov def. Jason Saggo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Vannata may be a lot richer at the end of the night.

Official Result- Lando Vannata def. John Makdessi by knockout (head kick) at 1:40 of Round 1

FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMS | 8 PM ET/5 PM PT

> Mitch Gagnon (12-3, 4-2 UFC) vs. Matthew Lopez (8-1, 0-1 UFC)
Bantamweights

Lopez got a takedown stuffed early. Gagnon then rocked Lopez with a big punch and swarmed on looking for the finish. Gagnon had Lopez in a lot of trouble landing punch after punch. Gagnon had the back and looked to lock in a choke but Lopez was able to defend and scrambled to guard. Lopez amazingly recovered but the fight should have been stopped. They got up and both men dropped looking for leg locks. Lopez survived the round but clearly 10-9 for Gagnon. Gagnon went for a takedown in the second but Lopez reversed into full guard. Gagnon was able to scramble out but Lopez drug him to the ground and was looking for a choke from the back. Lopez got into mount but Gagnon got back up. Lopez got another takedown late. 10-9 round for Lopez and I have it even 19-19, but Gagnon could’ve gotten a 10-8 first. Gagnon landed a low blow at the start of the third. Lopez recovered and then got a takedown and was grinding from the top. Gagnon was able to get to his feet. Lopez scored another big takedown. Lopez landed quite a few punches from the back. Lopez went for a choke but the fight ended without him finding it. 10-9 third round for Lopez and I have him winning 29-28. It’ll come down to how the first round is scored. Lopez won on all scorecards. Interestingly, no judge gave a 10-8 round in the first for Gagnon, but one judge had a 10-8 round for Lopez, likely the third.

Pereira standing a lot on the outside and Letourneau being the more aggressive fighter. Pereira got a takedown off the clinch against the fence. Pereira landed some hammerfists and then let Letourneau back up. 10-9 second round for Pereira, 19-19 after two. They were trading in the third with neither getting the edge. A very slow third round. They got in a clinch and neither got the edge. They traded at the end. No clear round winner in the third. I’m giving it 10-9 to Letourneau for volume, and have it 29-28 Letourneau. Pereira took the fight on two scorecards. Not a bad call as neither did anything in that third round, or in most of the fight.

Official Result- Viviane Pereira def. Valerie Letourneau by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Dober cracked him late with a left hand and another. 10-9 round for Aubin-Mercier. Dober dropped Aubin-Mercier with a left hand and went right into the full guard. Aubin-Mercier grabbed a leg lock and used it to sweep Dober and he ended up into the full guard of Dober. Aubin-Mercier transitioned to the back and was able to get the arm under Dober’s neck and locked in a rear-naked choke. Dober tapped out and Aubin-Mercier gets the win by submission! First win for a Canadian fighter tonight.

Official Result- Olivier Aubin-Mercier def. Drew Dober by submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:57 of Round 2

They traded early in the third and Meek pushed Mein against the fence. Meek got a takedown. The pace really slowed. Meek remaining on top and neither doing much. The crowd booing the slow pace of the round. Meek with more punches from the top. Mein tried a kimura but couldn’t get it as the fight ends. 10-9 Meek and I have it 29-28 Meek. All three judges had it the same.

Official Result- Emi Meek def. Jordan Mein by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

> Tim Kennedy (#10, 18-5, 3-1 UFC) vs. Kelvin Gastelum (#8 WW, 12-2, 7-2 UFC)
Middleweights

The first round was mostly all Kennedy as he took Gastelum down multiple times and was wearing him down with a body lock. Gastelum was able to escaped and tagged Kennedy a couple of times and Kennedy had a swollen right eye, and Gastelum rocked him late. I think he stole it at the end so I had it 10-9 Gastelum.

Kennedy tried to put this fight back to a grind in the second with a body lock but Gastelum escaped and was getting the better of the striking battle. Gastelum definitely had a speed edge on the feet and Kennedy started to show signs of gassing as the round wore on. 10-9 round for Gastelum and I had him up 20-18.

Gastelum was picking Kennedy apart on the feet early in the third round and had him close to being finished. He continued to tee off and dropped Kennedy and finally finished it in the third as John McCarthy stepped in. A big win for Gastelum and he looked very good in this fight. He expressed his desire to go back to 170 pounds after the fight. He looked great here so that might not be the right move.

Official Result- Kelvin Gastelum def. Tim Kennedy by TKO (punches) at 2:45 of Round 3

> Cub Swanson (#4, 23-7, 8-3 UFC) vs. Doo Ho Choi (#11, 15-1, 3-0 UFC)
Featherweights

They were going back-and-forth on their feet with both men landing hard punches. The output was more Swanson but Choi was connecting more and landing with more power and he had some real snap on his punches. All action on the feet in the first round. I had it 10-9 Choi.

The second round was so awesome. They were throwing punches back and forth and both men had the other close to being finished. They were just cracking each other in an amazing sequence. Swanson changed the pace for a moment but they got back up and were cracking each other with punches again. At one point, Swanson landed a cartwheel kick and a spinning back fist in back-to-back sequences. They both somehow survived. One of the best rounds of the year. I had it 10-9 Swanson, 19-19 after two.

The third round was nuts as well. They were just hitting each other with everything they had. Swanson cracked Choi with so many punches it was unreal how his chin held up. Both men were just hitting each other so hard. Swanson had Choi in trouble a lot but Choi was unreal in survivng. It was another amazing round. Swanson dropped him at the end. We have a late front runner for fight of the year. I had round three 10-9 for Swanson and the fight 29-28 for Swanson.

The crowd went crazy after the fight. All three judges had the fight for Swanson. He credited Choi for calling him out and making him question himself and said he trained hard for the fight. Choi- “If this is what losing feels like, I’m going to train even more, and I’m not going to lose again.” He said he is a huge fan of Swanson and really wanted to fight him.

Official Result- Cub Swanson def. Doo Ho Choi by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

> Donald Cerrone (#5, #10 LW, 31-7 1 NC, 18-4 UFC) vs. Matt Brown (#14, 20-15, 13-9 UFC)
Welterweights

The first round mostly stayed standing and they were cracking each other, but Cerrone had more volume and had Brown in trouble. Brown did land some big punches and had Cerrone in a triangle choke at one point, but Cerrone escaped. Brown came on better at the end of the round. I had it 10-9 for Cerrone.

They were trading and Brown dropped Cerrone at one point and had him in trouble. Cerrone then ended up dropping Brown a few moments later. Both were landing, but as the round wore on, it looked like Cerrone’s punches were doing more damage and had Brown in more trouble.. Brown’s face was a bloody mess in this round. It was close, but I had it 10-9 for Cerrone based on damage. I had it 20-18 Cerrone.

They hugged at the start of the third round, but it didn’t last much longer after that. Cerrone landed a perfectly placed head kick and Brown went out cold! A highlight-reel knockout win for Cerrone! Cerrone said he wanted on the Denver card on January 28 in his post-fight interview.

Official Result- Donald Cerrone def. Matt Brown by knockout (head kick) at :34 of Round 3

> Max Holloway (#2, 16-3, 12-3 UFC) vs. Anthony Pettis (#5, 19-5, 6-4 UFC)
Interim UFC Featherweight Championship for Holloway, Pettis missed weight, coming in at 148 pounds

The first round was a lot of a feeling out process. Holloway was leaving himself wide open and Pettis was able to strike accordingly with side kicks and high kicks. Holloway started to find his strikes late and was landing clean and hard strikes as the round progressed. It started going his way at the end. I had it 10-9 for Holloway.

Holloway knocked Pettis down early in the second and Pettis got up and was starting to be more aggressive, likely sensing he was down in the fight. He kept closing in on Holloway, but that allowed Holloway to attack the body. Holloway was getting the better of the exchanges so Pettis tried to turn this into a clinch grind but the round ended before he could get anything going. I had round two 10-9 for Holloway, and him up 20-18.

As we start round three, it appears Pettis has a broken hand. It clearly has affected his gameplan as he stopped throwing his right hand and was mostly going for kicks. Holloway was executing his offense very well, mixing his striking with some well-timed trip takedowns. Pettis did hurt him with some jabs but that seems to be his main course of offense. Holloway then landed a beautiful sequence to the body that stunned and dropped Pettis and Holloway poured on the punches until Yves Lavigne stepped in and stopped it. A big finish by Holloway and he is now the Interim UFC Featherweight Champion.

Holloway called out Jose Aldo to unify the championships at UFC 208 in Brooklyn in February. Pettis said he broke his right hand with the first punch, and said he was going back to 155 pounds as the weight cut to 145 pounds is too much for him.

Official Result- Max Holloway def. Anthony Pettis by TKO (strikes) at 4:50 of Round 3
