Thekla declares ‘death to Stardom’ for AEW Forbidden Door, president Taro Okada responds

Reigning AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla’s war with her previous employer Stardom will apparently continue at this month’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

During Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, Thekla cut a in-arena promo alongside Skye Blue and Julia Hart where she recounted her hatred for Stardom, that she was the “Idol Killer there” and issued a reminder that she got fired.

She said now, they have to do it all over again and has her eyes set for Forbidden Door and whether the Stardom talent comes here or the Triangle of Madness goes there, she is “going to close that door for damn good.”

She then said, “I am not declaring war on Stardom. I am declaring death to Stardom.”

She then climbed a ladder next to the videoboard on the entranceway that had the Forbidden Door graphic up and spit on the the Stardom logo before flipping it off.

It didn’t take long for Stardom president and Thekla nemesis Taro Okada to respond on X, saying it was “A vulgar, cowardly, and shameful act. Unforgivable.”

She made her debut in AEW just over a year ago after a successful run in Stardom that ended with her storyline firing after she attacked Okada — an angle she said she got death threats over. During Stardom’s WrestleMania week show in Las Vegas, Thekla made a surprise appearance to torment Okada again.

The PPV is set for Sunday, June 28 from San Jose, Californai.

TNA Slammiversary avoids direct competition with AEW Forbidden Door

Though the pay-per-views are taking place on the same day, TNA Slammiversary and AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2026 won’t directly be going head-to-head.

The start time for Slammiversary is now listed as 3 p.m. Eastern on Ticketmaster and on the website for Agganis Arena. That venue in Boston is hosting Slammiversary on Sunday, June 28. Forbidden Door will take place on the other side of the country later that night, with the PPV being held at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. The start time for Forbidden Door is listed as 7 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. Pacific).

TNA will still face tough sports competition due to Slammiversary going against a second-round World Cup soccer game that afternoon.

Competition between TNA and AEW has become a story over the past month after TNA pulled its talent from scheduled indie matches against AEW wrestlers. In an interview with Busted Open Radio, TNA President Carlos Silva accused AEW of trying to “come at” TNA by airing programming against Impact and allegedly blocking TNA from some venues. The issues appear to stem from an episode of AEW Collision that was moved to Thursday night opposite Impact due to a scheduling conflict with NCAA March Madness.

TNA’s PPV schedule for 2026 includes events in Chicago, Boston, Tampa, and Edmonton (Canada).

AEW announces date and location for Forbidden Door 2026

AEW has announced the date and location for this year’s Forbidden Door.

As first reported by The Mercury News, the pay-per-view will take place on June 28 from the SAP Center in San Jose, California. The venue is coming off having hosted the April 10, 2026 edition of WWE SmackDown.

The pay-per-view will go head-to-head with TNA Slammiversary, which is also scheduled for Sunday, June 28.

Both AEW president Tony Khan and NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi commented on the announcement.

“AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door has become one of professional wrestling’s biggest events of the year thanks to our incredible partnerships with New Japan Pro Wrestling, CMLL and STARDOM, and we look forward to fans in attendance and those watching around the world being a part of history,” said Tony Khan, AEW CEO, GM and head of creative.

“This year sees the fifth AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door and whenever New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling collide, we see great chemistry between the wrestlers and many memorable moments,” said New Japan Pro Wrestling president Hiroshi Tanahashi. “This year, NJPW will be playing for keeps to win more than ever. Our roster is fired up to show just how exciting New Japan Pro Wrestling is, and fans can expect a sensational event.”

Tickets go on sale April 27, with presale beginning April 21.

This year’s Forbidden Door will be the fifth edition of the event. The first took place on June 26, 2022, at the United Center in Chicago. The 2023 edition was held at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The 2024 event took place at UBS Arena in New York, and last year’s show was held at the O2 Arena in London.

Early estimate on AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view buys

While the event isn’t yet a week old, there are early pay-per-view estimates for last Sunday’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door from The O2 in London, England.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the early estimate is between 122,000-130,000 buys which would put it in line with May’s Double or Nothing and at the lower end of the tier for AEW buys this year.

Of note, the main show started at 1 PM Eastern vs. its traditional 8 PM Eastern start time due to the location and two hours earlier than July’s All In (3 PM Eastern).

Meltzer noted that while cable/satellite buys were down in the U.S. and Australia, the United Kingdom numbers made up for the deficit being in their prime time.

Estimated AEW PPV buys in 2025

  • Revolution (March): 135,000-140,000
  • Dynasty (April): 110,000-120,000
  • Double or Nothing (May): 122,000-130,000
  • All In (July): 180,000-185,000
  • Forbidden Door (August): 122,000-130,000

Top five AEW PPV buys all-time

2021’s All Out is the leader (205,000 buys), followed by 2023’s All In (200,000 buys), 2025’s All In (180,000-185,000 buys), 2024’s Revolution (180,000), and 2022’s Revolution (175,000).

Will Ospreay releases statement following AEW Forbidden Door angle

Will Ospreay has released a statement following Forbidden Door.

On social media Monday, the AEW star released a short statement thanking fans. This follows an angle at the end of the show where the Death Riders attacked Ospreay, with Jon Moxley wrapping a steel chair around Ospreay’s neck and stomping on it before Ospreay’s teammates could re-enter the ring.

“I genuinely have no words. Thank you so much for every little bit of support. Love you guys so much @AEW,” he wrote.

The show-closing angle saw Ospreay’s team get the win over the Death Riders and the Young Bucks. But the show didn’t end on a happy note as Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli attacked Ospreay as he was trapped in the ring after his teammates had left. Moxley repeatedly gave Ospreay Death Rider DDTs to Ospreay before finishing with the steel chair. Samoa Joe and the rest of the Opps came out and finally managed to get the steel cage lifted. The final moments of the show saw AEW medical tend to Ospreay as the show went off the air.

The angle took place in order to write off Ospreay, who will be undergoing neck surgery soon. In an interview with CBS Sports, he talked about the anxiety of what comes next following Forbidden Door, as well as what Adam Copeland told him about the surgery.

Violent cage match closes AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, star injured afterward

In a wild and violent unsanctioned steel cage match that saw a man get his ear torn apart by a fork, IWGP president and all-timer Hiroshi Tanahashi ended his final match ever in London with his hand raised.

Tanahashi, Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi and Darby Allin were victorious over Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Gabe Kidd and the Young Bucks at Sunday’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in the aforementioned match.

The good mood was quickly dashed as Ospreay, who was left alone in the ring to take in cheers and adulation for what could be his final appearance in quite some time, was attacked by Moxley and Castagnoli. They locked the cage and went to town on Ospreay with multiple DDTs, eventually Pillmanizing his neck in a chair like they did at All In.

The rest of Ospreay’s teammates, joined by The Opps, were unable to get in the cage to assist, only breaking things up when AEW doctors demanded the cage be raised.

Ospreay is expected to go into surgery for two herniated discs that have been bothering him for nearly a year. His timetable to return is unknown, but is assumed to be lengthy.

**********

As for the match itself, it was a spectacle as expected, marking the respective returns to the ring for Ospreay, Omega, Allin and Kidd who were all on the shelf for various reasons.

The end came when Castagnoli was left inside the ring with Omega, Ibushi and Ospreay. He was taken out, followed by Nick Jackson who was hit by an Omega/Ibushi Golden Trigger. Ospreay then landed a Hidden Blade on Matt Jackson followed by a Omega V-Trigger on Matt with an Ospreay Hidden Blade from the top.

The team then yielded to Tanahashi, wrestling in London for the final time with his retirement coming in January, who hit the High Fly Flow on Matt for the pin and win.

Despite his injury, Ospreay looked like Ospreay, fluid in what he could do and hitting an array of big spots including a moonsault off the top of the cage onto his opponents. Omega also looked crisp in his first match since July’s All In.

Seen below, the most grotesque spot in the match, perhaps of the year as well, saw Moxley take a fork to Allin’s right ear, digging through his earring hole which immediately began spurting blood. This came after Allin was thrown over the top rope by Castagnoli into the cage and after he was duct taped to a chair in the ring. After the incident, Castagnoli then slammed Allin while he was still in the chair.

It was Allin’s first match since last December as he took time off to climb Mt. Everest which may have been less punishing than the match itself.

The match did have its light-hearted moments such as the Bucks pouring out gummy bears instead of thumbtacks as requested which led to spots with the candy, and Tanahashi climbing a ladder to jump on his opponents, only to be coaxed down by Ospreay and Ibushi for his own safety.

The match, seemingly using the Blood & Guts cage with some modifications, saw a barbed wire board brought out and used by Tanahashi who rubbed Moxley’s head into it, countering himself being thrown into it.

Another notable spot saw Moxley use a ladder to escape the cage, aided by Wheeler Yuta on the outside. While Moxley escaped, Allin took chase and pulled Yuta up, pummeling him until he fell backward onto the unbreakable Japanese announce table. Allin then pursued Moxley with a kendo stick.

Allin later put Moxley between a stack of four tables (two by two) and went up to the top of the cage. Marina Shafir pulled Moxley out, but Kidd snuck up from behind, punched Allin low and climbed up to the top with him to the refrains of “Please don’t die.” Kidd pulled him up, but Allin raked his eyes, and then both men fell sideways through the tables, taking them both out of the match at that point.

AEW star returns at Forbidden Door after long absence, joins faction

After more than a year away, former TNT Champion Wardlow has finally returned to AEW, making a surprise appearance at Sunday’s Forbidden Door.

Wardlow, fresh off his run on the impending American Gladiators reboot, came into the ring following AEW Unified Champion Kazuchika Okada’s victory over Swerve Strickland in which Okada further damaged the challenger’s knee.

Wardlow, dressed in an all black suit, took out Prince Nana with a clothesline and then continued to ground and pound him as Strickland was immobilized due to the injury.

Security eventually pulled Wardlow off, but he beat them up as well. He eventually left the ring where Okada and Don Callis were watching all this unfold with big smiles on their faces. Wardlow exited and embraced Callis, joined by Okada and the rest of the Don Callis Family.

Of note, Konosuke Takeshita came out last and just stared at Wardlow without any handshake or embrace, further building up his expected split with the group.

The 37-year-old has been out of action since March 2024 when he unsuccessfully challenged then-AEW World Champion Samoa Joe at the Big Business edition of AEW Dynamite. There were stories of him dealing with a knee injury but all sides were quiet during his extended absence.

Former AEW Women’s World Champion returns at Forbidden Door

Former AEW Women’s World Champion Jamie Hayter is back once again from injury, making a surprise appearance at Sunday’s Forbidden Door from London.

Hayter has been out of action the last two months with an undisclosed injury suffered in her match with Mercedes Mone in this summer’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament.

Hayter came to Queen Aminata’s aid Sunday as a backstage brawl between she and Thekla led to Julia Hart and Skye Blue attacking Aminata in a three-on-one. Hayter’s music hit and she took out Hart and Blue before Thekla managed to escape.

Hayter has returned from injury before in London, appearing at last year’s All In to confront Saraya after missing nearly 18 months with herniated discs.

Thekla took Hayter out in an injury angle to debut on Dynamite, setting up the feud upon her return. A month before the injury, Hayter had just said she was finally feeling like herself again.

Mercedes Mone gets special entrance for AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door match

Mercedes Mone capped off a big weekend in London by retaining her TBS Championship at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

The title was contested in an international four-way match at the pay-per-view, featuring representatives from AEW (Mone and Alex Windsor), CMLL (Persephone), and Stardom (Bozilla). Mone was able to prevail after pinning Persephone and snatching the victory away from Windsor.

Windsor nearly won the title in her home country. She had a Sharpshooter locked on Persephone when Mone broke up the move with a lungblower. Persephone then lifted up Mone, but the champion reversed into a pin to retain her title.

This was Mone’s third match of the weekend, having already competed twice for Revolution Pro Wrestling. She added a new championship to her growing belt collection on Friday by winning the Discovery Wrestling Scottish Women’s Championship.

Mone is currently in possession of nine title belts, with seven of them being currently active championships. She holds the AEW TBS Championship, CMLL Women’s World Championship, and RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Championship, along with titles for indie promotions in Scotland, Poland, Austria, and Italy.

One of the other belts Mone has is the ceremonial title she received for winning the 2025 Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. The other is the inactive Queen of Southside belt that was previously unified with RevPro’s Women’s Championship.

At Forbidden Door, Mone had a special British-themed entrance where all of her title belts were on display.

NJPW & Stardom announcer debuts on AEW Forbidden Door broadcast

NJPW & Stardom announcer Walker Stewart made his debut at the AEW commentary desk Sunday as part of the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door broadcast team.

Stewart quietly made his way to the desk, replacing Tony Schiavone for the TNT title match between Kyle Fletcher and challenger Hiromu Takahashi, joining Excalibur and Bryan Danielson. Excalibur joked about him suddenly appearing before introducing him. Don Callis also joined the party as well.

While he did not remain in the booth for the TBS title four-way despite Bozilla’s inclusion, Stewart returned for the IWGP World title match between champion Zack Sabre Jr. and Nigel McGuinness.

Stewart became the lead NJPW English language announcer in October 2023, replacing longtime voice Kevin Kelly.

“The Velvet Voice” is still in his early 20s and has done work for  GCW, Mission Pro, Future Stars of Wrestling, and Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling in his past. Earlier this year, he added the position of Stardom Director of Global Communications and PR in addition to his commentary duties for both NJPW and Stardom.

AEW announces new attendance record set by Forbidden Door 2025

Update —

The official announced attendance for Forbidden Door is 18,992 fans.

**********

During the pre-show for today’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view, it was revealed that the show had set a new attendance record for professional wrestling at London’s O2 Arena.

AEW said that more than 18,000 fans are in attendance for Forbidden Door, which surpasses the previous O2 record that had been held by WWE Money in the Bank 2023. However, the WWE show likely drew more in ticket sales given higher prices.

Later in the main PPV show, AEW announced 18,992 as the official attendance.

Tony Khan celebrated the record while appearing on the pre-show alongside Dr. Martha Hart and her son Oje Hart.

“All of you have made history today for the biggest pro wrestling live crowd in the history of The O2,” Khan announced.

The O2 has been around for nearly two decades, having opened in 2007.

Forbidden Door 2025 will be one of the four biggest gates in AEW history, with three of the top four being shows held in London. All In 2023 and 2024 (London’s Wembley Stadium) and All In 2025 (Globe Life Field in Texas) make up the rest of the top four.

All In 2023 holds the overall AEW attendance record with the promotion saying 81,035 tickets were sold (turnstile count of 72,265).

AEW Forbidden Door 2025 could break WWE record

Sunday’s AEW Forbidden Door could break a WWE record that has stood since 2023.

WrestleTix has reported that the show has sold 17,573 as of this with only 175 left available at the building.

It was reported by WrestleTix back in 2023 that WWE’s Money in the Bank event had 17,617 distributed tickets, meaning that All Elite Wrestling could very well beat that number tonight in exactly the same building.

AEW to break WWE record?

However, it is worth noting that the gate for that MITB event was £2,615,789 GBP ($3,323,751 USD), likely to be far higher than Forbidden Door due to WWE tickets being higher on average than those for All Elite Wrestling shows.

There’s still the opportunity for the company to do it, and being able to say that you’re the biggest PPV/PLE event in the O2 Arena ever, surpassing even WWE, it quite the accomplishment. This is also a big moment for NJPW, who have seen business falling in recent years since the creation of AEW and some of their biggest stars like Kenny Omega, Kazuchika Okada and The Young Bucks leaving.

Nyla Rose backstage at AEW Forbidden Door

According to a new report from Fightful Select, Nyla Rose will be backstage at the event this afternoon, but it has not been confirmed if she will be appearing on screen in any way. We’ve reached out to EVE regarding her status today and whether she could appear on camera and are currently awaiting a response.

This now marks two AEW women’s division stars that are Champions in the UK, with Mercedes Mone also collecting the Discovery Championship alongside her Rev Pro title this weekend during the Crystal Palace event (also in London).

AEW appears to be working more and more with UK-based promotions, and with the lack of NXT Europe talk in recent times there is a good chance that they could further plug All Elite in the gap left by the the closure of NXT UK and the impact of Speaking Out on the UK scene.
