IWGP title eliminator match added to AEW Double or Nothing

An IWGP World title eliminator match has been added to the AEW Double or Nothing lineup.

AEW’s Tony Khan announced Thursday in a social media post that IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley will be in action at Double or Nothing in a World title eliminator bout against Konosuke Takeshita. Should Takeshita win, he will receive a future IWGP World title shot.

Moxley’s next IWGP World title defense is currently set for NJPW Dominion on Sunday, June 9 against EVIL. Since winning the title from Tetsuya Naito at Windy City Riot last month, Moxley has made successful defenses against Powerhouse Hobbs on Dynamite, Ren Narita at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku, and Shota Umino at NJPW Resurgence.

The updated lineup for Double or Nothing:

AEW Double or Nothing, Sunday, May 26, 7 p.m. Eastern time on pay-per-view —

Mercedes Mone vs. Willow Nightingale TBS title match set for AEW Double or Nothing

A rematch nearly a year in the making is now official for AEW Double or Nothing as new TBS Champion Willow Nightingale will defend against Mercedes Mone.

The match was made official for the Sunday, May 26th pay-per-view after the results of Sunday’s Dynasty PPV that saw Nightingale defeat Julia Hart for the title in just over six minutes.

After the win, Mone came out into the ring for a face-to-face confrontation — the latest one they have had since Mone made her debut in March.

The two squared off at May 2023’s NJPW Strong Resurgence in the finals of the inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s title tournament. Mone famously injured her ankle severly during the match, changing the course of what the finish was supposed to be. Nightingale won the 13-minute match and held the title for 45 days before losing it to Giulia.

For Mone, it will be her first in-ring action since that night. As part of the tension-building, Mone has been cold to Nightingale since her debut, blaming her for the injury she suffered.

Nightingale’s title reign is her first in AEW of any kind, ending Hart’s 155-day run that featured seven successful title defenses.

Mercedes Mone challenges TBS Champion for AEW Double or Nothing

Mercedes Mone has challenged the TBS Champion to a match at AEW Double or Nothing.

In a promo segment on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Mone interrupted an interview with the next TBS title challenger Willow Nightingale and declared a challenge for a title match at Double or Nothing set for Sunday, May 26.

Nightingale will challenge Julia Hart for the TBS Championship at the Dynasty pay-per-view set for Sunday, April 21.

Mone made her AEW debut at Dynamite Big Business on March 13, but has yet to wrestle for the promotion. Wednesday’s challenge would indicate that her in-ring debut will be held off until Double or Nothing, but no official announcement has been made to confirm that.

Nightingale vs. Mone is a natural feud, as Mone suffered an injury in a match against Nightingale at last May’s NJPW Resurgence event that has kept her sidelined from in-ring competition since. An audible was called in that bout as Mone was scheduled to win the match and be crowned the inaugural NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, but called for a change to the finish on the fly after suffering the injury.

AEW announces details for Double or Nothing 2024

AEW is officially heading back to Las Vegas for Double or Nothing 2024.

The Memorial Day weekend tradition will continue as Double or Nothing takes place from MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday, May 26. The venue will also host a live episode of AEW Collision on the eve of Double or Nothing.

Tickets for the events will go on sale to the general public this Saturday (March 30).

This is MGM Grand Garden Arena’s first time hosting Double or Nothing since 2019. The past two years, Double or Nothing took place from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Daily’s Place in Jacksonville hosted Double or Nothing in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Double or Nothing is happening on the same night as NXT Battleground. Savannah, Georgia is hosting that NXT premium live event.

AEW also announced today that the post-Double or Nothing episode of Dynamite will be held at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Wednesday, May 29. That week’s Collision episode will be taped in advance at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California on Thursday, May 30.

Tickets for the Kia Forum show are also going on sale this Saturday. On-sale information for the Palm Springs show will be announced at a later date.

Before Double or Nothing, AEW will present its Dynasty pay-per-view from St. Louis on Sunday, April 21. The next three AEW PPVs (Dynasty, Double or Nothing, and Forbidden Door) will be available on TrillerTV in the United States in addition to traditional methods.

AEW to offer next three PPVs on Triller/FITE for US buyers

After years of B/R Live being the sole domestic streaming source to buy AEW pay-per-views from, the next three AEW PPVs will also be available to purchase on Triller, the former FITE.

That change in availability will begin with next month’s AEW Dynasty and will continue with May’s Double or Nothing and June’s Forbidden Door. It’s unknown what will happen after that point as it was described as a “right now” situation.

On Tuesday, the ability to purchase Dynasty went live on Triller for the traditional $49.99 PPV price. The ability to purchase all three PPVs as a Triple Pack bundle as international buyers are able to do will not be an option for domestic buyers.

The news comes on the heels of last month’s Revolution which was marred by so many technical issues early on that the PPV was made available to buy on Triller for the U.S. audience as the show was going on.

Triller and AEW have been in business together for years as the former offers AEW Plus for international audiences — a monthly subscription package that includes Dynamite, Collision and Rampage. Additionally, that is where AEW PPVs can be purchased.

B/R Live is owned and operated by Warner Bros. Discovery who holds both AEW’s domestic TV rights and PPV streaming rights through what’s believed to be the end of 2024. Dynasty is currently available to purchase on that service.

JNPO: Pro wrestling year in review – Collisions, Backlashes & injuries

On a new Josh Nason’s Punch-Out, we arrive at May 2023 in my pro wrestling year in review series: a transformative 31 days for AEW.

Or so they thought.

ProWrestling.net’s Jason Powell returns as my co-pilot as we delve into the official launch of AEW Collision — the company’s third TV show on WBD.

Of course, there was a lot to unpack with it, especially the circumstances around CM Punk’s involvement which was surprisingly highly in doubt following the initial announcement.

They also held Double or Nothing which featured a four-way for the AEW World title, an Anarchy in the Arena bout, a surprise return & title change, a pregnancy announcement and more.

We couldn’t forget about the launch of AEW All In ticket sales which saw 60,000 out the door by the time the month ended.

On the WWE side, they held two PLEs including Backlash from Puerto Rico which featured one of the wildest crowds in recent WWE history. The undisputed king of the island — Bad Bunny — made his singles debut and the show featured the first-ever Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes clash.

Just as she was getting going, Mercedes Mone suffered a severe ankle injury during the finals of the NJPW Strong Women’s title tournament — one that has kept her out of action as of this writing.

Among the several hundred newstips, we talk Tiffany Stratton’s NXT Women’s title win, an incredibly violent Impact World title match, the passing of “Superstar” Billy Graham, and more.

I promise this is unlike any other year-end series you’ll hear or read, so catch up on the rest of the series in the archive.

AEW Double or Nothing estimated to finish in 130,000-135,000 PPV buy range

Last Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing is estimated to finish between 130,000-135,000 pay-per-view buys by our Dave Meltzer’s best estimates.

That number could increase depending on the amount of late buys which helped bolster the final numbers for March’s Revolution PPV thanks to the buzz for top matches like the MJF vs. Bryan Danielson Iron Man bout. Based on the “ridiculous number” of late buys that show did, Meltzer didn’t see Double or Nothing matching that.

As first noted by Meltzer on Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio and then again in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, both streaming buys through BR and FITE and linear buys were similar or virtually identical to Revolution.

Whatever the final number is, it will be down from last year’s 165,000 buys, helped by CM Punk going for his first AEW World title, the first-ever Anarchy in the Arena match, and the buzz surrounding whether MJF would appear for his match with Wardlow given the subsequent controversy when he skipped a Saturday autograph session and went radio silent to management.

The number will continue a range AEW has been falling in with their last four PPV offerings: June 2023’s Forbidden Door (140,000 range), September 2023’s All Out (140,000 range), November 2023’s Full Gear (140,000 range), and the aforementioned Revolution from this past March (145,000 range).

Meltzer also reported the show drew 10,550 fans (9000 paid/1550 comps) to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for a gate of nearly $900,000. That would be under last year’s $1,000,00+ gate and attendance (14,459 total) in the same venue. Meltzer noted higher ticket prices contributed to the gate not dropping by that much.

Matt Jackson obtained special license for AEW Double or Nothing spot

Matt Jackson had to obtain a special license in order to deliver an exploding superkick to Jon Moxley.

Matt performed the move during the Anarchy in the Arena match when Moxley had Nick Jackson in a single-leg crab. Our own Dave Meltzer reported in today’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that he was required to get a fire performers license from the state of Nevada.

Meltzer wrote:

Matt Jackson came up with the exploding superkick spot about a month ago. He wanted to do something that hadn’t been done and to do so he had to get a Nevada State Fire Performers license that other entertainment acts in Las Vegas using things like that as part of the show have to get.

Meltzer gave Anarchy in the Arena at Double or Nothing 2023 a five-star rating. Last year’s Anarchy in the Arena match also received the same rating.

The Young Bucks have now been in 10 matches rated five stars or above, Kenny Omega has been in 23 (the record is 25), Moxley has been in four, Danielson has been in five, and Hangman Page has also been in five. Sunday’s match at Double or Nothing was the first five-star match for both Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta.

Konosuke Takeshita helps BCC win Anarchy in the Arena at AEW Double or Nothing

Blackpool Combat Club defeated The Elite in an Anarchy in the Arena match at AEW Double or Nothing with help from Konosuke Takeshita.

Takeshita returned to AEW for the first time in over a month at Sunday’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view, turning on Kenny Omega and aligning with Don Callis and the Blackpool Combat Club as the BCC defeated The Elite in the second annual Anarchy in the Arena match at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

When Takeshita was last seen in AEW, he was teaming with Omega on the April 26 Dynamite in a tag team victory over The Butcher and The Blade. At Double or Nothing, he cost Omega and The Elite a victory.

As the match reached its conclusion, Omega had Callis cornered in the ring and victory seemingly in hand. A masked man then flew in and hit Omega with a flying knee strike. The masked man was revealed to be Takeshita. Wheeler Yuta then pinned Omega with a seatbelt to secure the win for the BCC.

In a post-show promo in front of the live crowd in Vegas, Omega teased that outside talent would be coming to AEW to assist The Elite in their continuing battle against the Blackpool Combat Club.
