A grudge match has been added to the card for SummerSlam.
WWE has announced that Drew McIntyre will face Jinder Mahal at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
McIntyre and Mahal were formerly stablemates in 3MB. They’ve been feuding with each other for several weeks. At last month’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, Mahal, Veer, and Shanky attacked McIntyre and dragged him away during the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match.
“The Modern Day Maharaja has set his sights on his old teammate ever since his return to Raw,” WWE.com wrote. “Mahal and his towering associates Veer & Shanky derailed McIntyre’s attempt to climb the ladder at WWE Money in the Bank. The Scottish Warrior responded by destroying his opponent’s prized motorcycle and turned to his trusted sword when the odds have been stacked against him.”

Sheamus will defend his United States Championship against Damian Priest at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. The match was announced after Sheamus accepted a challenge from Priest on tonight’s episode of Raw.
Priest was set up as the next challenger for the United States Championship when he defeated Sheamus in a non-title match on Raw two weeks ago.
Sheamus and Priest both picked up wins on tonight’s Raw. Sheamus defeated Ricochet in a non-title match, while Priest defeated John Morrison. Priest then challenged Sheamus to face him at SummerSlam. Sheamus accepted and vowed to put Priest in his place.
Sheamus has been United States Champion since winning the title from Riddle at WrestleMania 37 this April.

A rematch of the WrestleMania 37 night one main event will take place at SummerSlam.
WWE has announced that SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair will defend her title against Sasha Banks at SummerSlam. Belair won the title by defeating Banks at WrestleMania 37 this April.
Banks returned to WWE television last Friday and continued her feud with Belair. Banks had been off TV since the post-WrestleMania episode of SmackDown.
Banks initially saved Belair from an attack by Carmella and Zelina Vega on SmackDown last week. But after Belair & Banks defeated Carmella & Vega in the main event of the episode, Banks turned against Belair and put her in the Banks Statement twice.
During the opening segment of tonight’s SmackDown, Banks addressed why she attacked Belair. Banks said she returned last week to reclaim her spotlight. Banks claimed that Belair would be nothing without her.
Belair then came out and responded to Banks. But Vega also made her way down and reminded Belair that — before Banks returned last week — Belair accepted a challenge from Vega. Belair vs. Vega in a non-title match was announced for later tonight. A title match between Belair and Banks was also announced for SummerSlam.
SummerSlam is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21. Here’s the updated card for the pay-per-view:
Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against John Cena
WWE Champion Bobby Lashley defends against Goldberg
SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair defends against Sasha Banks
Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. defends against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos defend against Rey & Dominik Mysterio
The Mysterios are getting their SmackDown Tag Team title rematch at SummerSlam.
WWE announced today that The Usos will defend their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Rey & Dominik Mysterio at SummerSlam. At Money in the Bank last month, The Usos won the SmackDown Tag Team titles by defeating The Mysterios on the pre-show.
The finish of that title match was Jimmy Uso rolling up Rey Mysterio while Jey Uso used his feet to give his brother extra leverage. On SmackDown two weeks ago, Jey did the same thing to help Jimmy defeat Dominik in a singles match. But The Mysterios then returned the favor last week when Dominik helped Rey defeat Jimmy.
SummerSlam is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21. Here’s the updated card for the pay-per-view:
Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against John Cena
WWE Champion Bobby Lashley defends against Goldberg
Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. defends against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match
SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos defend against Rey & Dominik Mysterio
Goldberg is officially the next challenger for Bobby Lashley’s WWE Championship.
Lashley will defend his WWE Championship against Goldberg at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. A confrontation between Lashley and Goldberg on Raw tonight led to the match being made official for SummerSlam later in the episode.
After Goldberg headed to the back following the confrontation, Lashley went face-to-face with Goldberg’s son Gage at ringside. Lashley and MVP both taunted Gage. As MVP was telling Gage that Lashley will end Goldberg’s career at SummerSlam, Goldberg came back out and hit a spear on MVP.
Goldberg returned to Raw two weeks ago and kicked off the build to him facing Lashley at SummerSlam. Goldberg also confronted Lashley on that episode, but Lashley dismissed Goldberg’s challenge. Lashley finally accepted the challenge during a backstage interview on Raw tonight. Lashley said he hopes Goldberg brings his son with him to SummerSlam so his son can watch Lashley annihilate Goldberg.
SummerSlam will be the first time Goldberg has wrestled since losing to Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble this January.
Lashley has been WWE Champion since winning the title from The Miz this March.
SummerSlam is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
On tonight’s SmackDown, it was confirmed that Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against John Cena at SummerSlam. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21.
WWE had been teasing that Finn Balor would instead challenge Reigns at SummerSlam, but a contract signing on tonight’s SmackDown ended with Reigns vs. Cena being made official. Baron Corbin took out Balor before Balor could sign the contract. Corbin attempted to sign the contract instead, but Cena ran in and sent Corbin out of the ring. Cena then signed the contract.
Paul Heyman tried to argue that the contract shouldn’t be binding, but Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville told him that it was good enough for them.
On last week’s SmackDown, Reigns declined Cena’s challenge for a Universal Championship match at SummerSlam. Balor then came out to the ring and issued his own challenge to Reigns. Reigns agreed to face Balor.
The build to Reigns vs. Cena began when Cena returned to WWE programming and confronted Reigns at Money in the Bank earlier this month.
Here’s the updated card for SummerSlam:
Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against John Cena
Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. defends against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match
The Raw Women’s Championship will be on the line in a triple threat match at SummerSlam.
During the opening segment of tonight’s Raw, it was announced that Nikki A.S.H. will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match at SummerSlam. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, August 21.
Nikki A.S.H. became Raw Women’s Champion by cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase on Charlotte last Monday. Nikki A.S.H. had won the briefcase in the previous night’s women’s Money in the Bank ladder match.
Charlotte’s reign with the Raw Women’s Championship lasted just one day after winning the title from Ripley at Money in the Bank. They faced off in a rematch on last week’s Raw, but Charlotte intentionally got herself disqualified.
Ripley hit Riptide on Charlotte outside of the ring after last Monday’s title match. Nikki A.S.H. then cashed in her briefcase, hit a top rope crossbody on Charlotte, and pinned her to win the Raw Women’s Championship.
Nikki A.S.H. opened tonight’s Raw before being interrupted by Charlotte. Ripley then made her way out to the ring. The segment led to WWE authority figures Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville announcing the triple threat Raw Women’s Championship match for SummerSlam. It was also announced that Nikki A.S.H. will face Charlotte in a non-title match later tonight.
This is the first match that’s been officially announced for SummerSlam. Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the Universal Championship, Bobby Lashley vs. Goldberg for the WWE Championship, and Seth Rollins vs. Edge are also expected to take place at the PPV.
WWE has announced a new partnership that will see SummerSlam air live in movie theaters next month.
WWE announced on Thursday that they’ve partnered with Iconic Events Releasing to bring SummerSlam to movie theaters nationwide for the first time. The show is taking place on Saturday, August 21 and will also air live on Peacock and pay-per-view.
“Iconic Events Releasing is proud to be in partnership with WWE to bring their incredible brand to movie theaters coast to coast,” said Iconic CEO Steve Bunnell. “SummerSlam is a marquee event that demands to be seen on the big screen, with big sound, in an auditorium full of excited fans.”
Tickets to see SummerSlam in theaters are on sale now at wweliveintheaters.com and at local box offices where the PPV is being shown.
“Iconic Events Releasing brings live and filmed entertainment of all types to movie theaters as special limited engagement events, so that fans can gather together to watch their favorites on the big screen. Programming includes live pay-per-view sports, music and comedy specials, stand-up comedy events, award-winning television specials, Broadway productions, exciting holiday specials, family events, live events for album releases, rock concerts, and music docs that celebrate diversity,” WWE wrote.
“Iconic’s national theater network represents the country’s preeminent cinemas offering enhanced guest experiences, high-quality food & beverage service, and reserved seating to ensure families can enjoy a night out watching SummerSlam live in their local movie theater.”
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will be the host of SummerSlam. Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the Universal Championship and Bobby Lashley vs. Goldberg for the WWE Championship have been set up for the PPV but haven’t yet been officially announced.
After the first 60:00 singles match on live U.S. TV in 23 years, and the first ever to a national audience, the SummerSlam show for 8/15 in Toronto has finalized its top seven matches.
The Raw brand top matches will be Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton for the World title, HHH vs. Eugene, Chris Jericho vs. Batista and Kane vs. Matt Hardy. The Smackdown brand matches will be JBL vs. Undertaker for the WWE title, Kurt Angle vs. Eddie Guerrero and John Cena vs. Booker T for the U.S. title.
The long-term plan is to build toward HHH vs. Orton as the big match at Wrestlemania. With Orton garnering so much momentum, this seems like an easy build by putting Orton over as champion and causing dissension in the Evolution group. HHH originally wanted that match for last year’s Mania, but recognized it was too early for Orton, who has really come into his own as a major star in the past two months.
WWE and TikTok are launching a contest to find two people who will appear as ring announcers at SummerSlam.
“Beginning today, WWE will launch a search for its next great ring announcer on TikTok, as users can upload their most entertaining videos using the hashtag #WWEAnnouncerContest,” WWE announced. “The best performers will earn a trip to SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21, where they will serve as a ring announcer at WWE’s biggest event of 2021. The announcer search is presented by Pure Life Purified Water.”
WWE will review each submission in the weeks leading into SummerSlam. The two winners will then be announced on WWE’s TikTok channel on Monday, August 16.
“Our engagement on TikTok to date has been incredible and we couldn’t think of a better platform to help us find the next great ring announcer,” said Steve Braband, WWE Vice President, Digital.
“Today’s announcement follows another innovative TikTok activation, through which WWE aims to discover and recruit its next generation of Superstars via the TikTok Resumes product,” WWE wrote. “The search culminates in a multi-day talent tryout in Las Vegas as part of SummerSlam.”
Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium is hosting SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. John Cena returned to WWE programming at Money in the Bank last night to confront Universal Champion Roman Reigns and set up a match for SummerSlam. The match has yet to be officially announced.
WWE’s first episode of Raw back in front of fans could have a major star return, according to a report.
Fightful Select reports that as of today, Goldberg is scheduled to return to WWE Raw on Monday’s episode at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
The Fightful report also states that WWE’s current plan is to have Goldberg face Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada. The report also states that Goldberg’s WWE contract runs through 2022 and calls for two matches per year.
Goldberg’s last WWE appearance came at Royal Rumble 2021 on January 31. He challenged Drew McIntyre for the WWE title on that show in a losing effort.
Goldberg wrestled twice in 2020, defeating The Fiend for the Universal title at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in February, then dropping the title to Braun Strowman on night one of WrestleMania 36.
Goldberg also wrestled twice in 2019. He lost to The Undertaker at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in June, then defeated Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam in Toronto.
On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said John Cena’s upcoming filming schedule will not affect any plans for a SummerSlam return.
Cena vs. Universal Champion Roman Reigns has been the discussed SummerSlam plan for some time, but the news last week of Cena’s filming commitment to new project “Argylle” raised some questions.
Meltzer said he was told the filming schedule, set to begin in Europe this August, isn’t expected to be a hurdle and whatever is going down at SummerSlam is still a go.
“Argylle,” which is based on a novel that will be published next year, will “follow the globe-trotting adventures of a super-spy named Argylle across the U.S., London and other exotic locations.” Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and pop star Dua Lipa have been announced for the movie.
Cena recently said in interviews that he would definitely be returning to the ring and is excited to do so, though Cena said he didn’t know when his return would be happening. This would be his first action since his cinematic match against “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at 2020’s WrestleMania.
SummerSlam is set for Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reigns will next defend his Universal title against Edge at Money in the Bank this Sunday.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE
Bryan and I will be back tonight taking Raw and the latest wrestling news. You can also send questions to the show tonight to [email protected]
Raw tonight has Drew McIntyre vs. A.J. Styles, New Day vs. Randy Orton & Riddle and the debut of Eva Marie vs. Naomi. Rumor has it Eva Marie will have some muscle with her and with a debut against Naomi, that would put her on the heel side as we talked about the last few weeks.
We’ll have all the details in the issue, but the key ratings notes are that on Friday, Smackdown did 1,944,000 viewers and 0.48 in 18-49. AEW did 487,000 viewers and 0.19 in 18-49. AEW did 160,000 viewers on Saturday via DVR of the show.
SummerSlam tickets for 8/21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas moved extremely well in today’s presale. We don’t know how many tickets were put on sale, but it appeared a large percentage of the planned total 41,000+ seats were put on sale because while there are empty sections not sold, most are. Of those put on sale, there were 1,085 left as of our last report. It’s pretty clear they’ll do a very healthy total. The general public on sale isn’t until Friday.
Saturday’s Utami Hayashishita vs. Syuri match for the Wonder of Stardom title is more than worth going out of your way to see. The negative is that if you don’t like hard-hitting matches with women, you won’t like this. But for technical skill, hard-hitting, and drama, this is one of the best matches of the year and in a completely different category than any women’s match in years. The match will be available on Wednesday or Thursday on Stardom World. You can watch it right now on PPV here. It didn’t have the crazy moves and blood of Britt Baker vs.Thunder Rosa but as a technical match it’s very much like a Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin mixed with Shinobu Kandori vs. Akira Hokuto. If you are a fan of women’s wrestling, now that they have English commentary on the shows, you really should subscribe to Stardom world. The storylines are good, emotional, work from top to bottom is very good and the people involved in the training of these women have a magic wand in getting people so good so quickly.
Scott Smoot, who had been Vice President of Live Events Production, who was let go in cuts, is being brought back since they are back to doing live events.
Regarding the return of Samoa Joe, who will be working in NXT it could be as a replacement for William Regal if he’s leaving, working with Regal in some fashion, and God knows they need a new opponent for Karrion Kross right now and Joe would certainly fit that thing and garner some interest there.
Kim Wood and I tell the story of Brian Pillman and Terry Funk’s idea of chaining him to the post during the Super Bowl in Phoenix.
Friday’s Lamar Odom vs. Aaron Carter Celebrity Boxing PPV did roughly the same number of television PPV buys as a good Impact PPV show.

Get ready for the return of the mouth of Colby Covington as he gets groomed for a rematch with Kamaru Usman. With Dana White confirming him for the next title shot, Colby Covington joined Submission Radio and reacted to Leon Edwards’ win over Nate Diaz: “I think that’s hilarious. I think Edwards Scissorhands, he’s out here claiming to be this god and he’s ready for a title shot. Dude, you’re struggling with a lightweight journeyman who has double-digit losses on his record, and this guy is almost finishing you? And you think you need to be in a title shot? That guy needs to go win ten more fights or 20 more fights if he can’t get by Nate Diaz like that. The guy’s a Stockton soy boy. He’s been finished by everybody. The guy has no gas left in the tank. He’s even saying himself he has no motivation left to fight. So, if you’re struggling with a guy like Nate Diaz, there’s no way you belong anywhere close to a world title fight.”
Andre Fili vs. Daniel Pineda is earmarked for the 6/26 show.
