WWE Raw live results: A new Universal Champion is crowned

The Big Takeaway —

Kevin Owens is the new WWE Universal Champion by winning the Fatal Four-way elimination match after HHH returned to Raw for the first time since March. HHH gave Roman Reigns a Pedigree on the floor, allowing Seth Rollins to pin him.

HHH acted like he was going to give Rollins a free path to the championship by also giving Owens a Pedigree, but instead HHH turned on Rollins and gave him a Pedigree, setting up Owens for the pin. The place went crazy for Owens winning. Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon, who earlier said everyone from ringside would be barred from the main event, were shocked to see HHH back and didn’t appear happy with him afterwards. It was the only thing of note on the show.

Show Recap —

The show was dedicated to the memory of Mr. Fuji.

Corey Graves opened the show in the ring with the Fatal Four-way participants seated in the ring on stools. Reigns got booked beyond belief when he appeared on the TitanTron. Rollins said if it wasn’t for what he did to Balor, none of them would be out there right now. Rollins said he was the favorite to win the Universal Championship tonight, and he felt benevolent tonight and wanted to donate the time he had to speak to Owens.

Owens complimented Graves for his show on the WWE Network, “Culture Shock,” because it helps him sleep. Fans chanted “Fight Owens Fight.” Owens thought Graves wanted everyone to be nice to each other like it was a group therapy session, and with Sami Zayn out of the picture he can focus on the Universal Championship. He said he’s a prize fighter and tonight the prize is as high as it gets. Owens said Reigns fights hard, but he fights smart. As for Big Cass, Owens says he’s just really tall. Owens was surprised that Cass could talk for himself because he thought Enzo Amore pulled a string out of Cass’ back and then Cass started speaking.

Cass wondered if Chris Jericho gave Owens that line. Cass said he knew where he stood because he’s the new guy on Raw. But that means he has nothing to lose. No one expects him to win. Rollins joked even Enzo betted against Cass. Cass said he’s not the underdog, he’s the biggest dog in this fight. Fans booed that line. Cass said contrary to what Rollins has thought over the last few years, size does matter.

Rollins said the match was elimination rules. He vowed to send Cass and Owens packing. If it came down to Rollins vs. Reigns, there are three certainties in life: death, taxes and Rollins beating Reigns every single time.

Rollins ordered Graves to ask Reigns how he will win tonight. Reigns got up and slapped Owens. That led to a brawl. Reigns threw Rollins down. Cass and Reigns had a stareoff, but Rollins kneed Reigns in the back, and Reigns collided with Cass. Reigns recovered to throw Cass out of the ring and delivered a Superman Punch to Rollins as the fans continued to jeer.

Michael Cole announced that Stephanie McMahon has ordered Paul Heyman to address Brock Lesnar’s actions at SummerSlam tonight.

Jericho did a standup interview with Tom Phillips before a match with Neville. Jericho said Neville was like Mighty Mouse and asked “Phil” what Neville was going to get. Phillips said “It.” Jericho said Neville wasn’t going to get “it” because that made no sense. He said Neville was going to get the drink of Jericho, “drink it in, man.”

Chris Jericho defeated Neville by submission (10:50)

Jericho won with the Walls of Jericho for the tapout. Neville attempted the Red Arrow but Jericho rolled out of the way. Then Neville tried to counter with a hurricanrana, but Jericho countered for the finish. Neville constantly found counters to Jericho’s trademark smarks throughout the match. Neville hit a standing shooting star press, then followed with a Asai Moonsault after Jericho rolled out of the ring.

Bayley wandered around backstage hugging various people. She ran across the New Day, who were happy to see her. Dana Brooke walked in and said Bayley was being unprofessional and said she didn’t belong her. Big E. spoke up and reminded Bayley beat Brooke last week.

Brooke said she had been talking to Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson lately. Kofi Kingston spoke up and said to bring on the negative Nancy’s. Brooke says she’ll bring them, but Bayley spoke up and said it’s already been brought, a line from the movie “Bring it On.” New Day hoisted Bayley on their shoulders.

They acknowledged the Rock as being the top-grossing movie star in the world.

Nia Jax defeated Ion (1:17)

Nia Jax won with the fireman’s carry into a powerslam. Andrea D’Marco did an interview with Ion where it sounded like they were reciting a script one syllable at a time. Just another squash.

Gallows and Anderson did a promo saying they were once doctors, but they’re now in the retirement business. They run an organization whose acronym spells out “OLD FART.” They showed highlights of their destruction of the Dudley Boyz last week, and said Bubba Ray and Devon were now enjoying like ping-pong and Matlock reruns. They introduced the retirement center’s new nurse, Dana Brooke, who walked in and put on rubber gloves. This set up a trios mixed tag team match later.

Sami Zayn defeated Jinder Mahal (3:06)

Zayn won with the Helluva Kick. Jinder Mahal got some offense because Zayn continued to sell his ankle that was “injured” in his match with Rollins last week.

Charlotte was at the commentator’s table. They showed footage of Lita interviewing Sasha Banks about her back injury. Banks called Charlotte a coward and accused her of trying to end her career, but now Banks was more focused than ever on getting her belt back and she was coming back better than ever.

Bayley, Kofi Kingston and Big E. defeated Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson and Dana Brooke (13:27)

Bayley pinned Brooke with the Bayley-to-belly. Kingston got the heat and set up the hot tag to Big E., but Anderson pulled Big E. off the apron. It broke into a six-way brawl where Kingston did a flip tope on Gallows that almost missed him completely. Bayley got to do the Unicorn Stampede spot, then danced with Big E. and Kingston while Xavier Woods played the trombone. Brooke specialized in taking bumps long before Bayley had even started reaching for her. Bayley motioned to Charlotte that she wanted a title shot after getting the win.

Cesaro did an interview about the second match of the best-of-seven series with Sheamus. He said he didn’t like Sheamus, Phillips didn’t like Sheamus, and no one liked Sheamus. Tonight, he was going to spin him around and around.

The company congratulated Fifth Harmony for winning two MTV Video Music Awards last night. At WrestleMania, they performed “America, the Beautiful.”

They did a promo piece on Cass saying how all the work he’s put into his career was work it because he made it to the WWE. He said he feels jacked up when he’s in front of the fans, like he could run through a brick wall.

Sheamus did an interview running down Cesaro saying he’s never done the things he’s done, like win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship or star in a top-grossing movie. He said Cesaro has spent his whole life trying to become a WWE champion but failed, and how is he going to feel in the end when he fails?

Sheamus defeated Cesaro by submission to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series. (11:12)

Cesaro did the Kazuchika Okada dropkick where Sheamus fell to the floor off the top rope. Sheamus ran for an uppercut on the floor, but Sheamus backdropped Cesaro into the post. Sheamus rolled Cesaro back into the ring and clamped on the Cloverleaf for the quick tapout. Things got interesting after Cesaro hit the springboard spinning uppercut after Cesaro ducked the Brogue Kick. Cesaro went for the Giant Swing, Sheamus made the ropes, so Cesaro used a pull-out power bomb for a two count.

Cole introduced a tribute video to Harry Fujiwara. They mentioned his various managerial exploits, saying he was perhaps best known as the manager of Yokozuna. Of course, no Fuji tribute video would be complete without an excerpt of “Fuji Vice.” There was also highlights from “Fuji Hospital,” where Don Muraco couldn’t keep a straight face while Fuji recited his lines. Very nice tribute.

The weekly Strowman squash match was with Americo, a Luchador. When Byron Saxton asked him why he was taking the match, Americo started to answer. Then Strowman’s music started and Americo was stunned into silence. Cole said he looked like Max Moon.

Braun Strowman defeated Americo (:56)

Strowman pinned Americo with a Manhattan Drop, then unmasked Americo, which actually got some heat.

Stephanie came out to address the SummerSlam situation with Heyman. Stephanie said she didn’t take any glee on what happened to her brother Shane at SummerSlam even though they’re in competition with each other. Heyman interrupted her. Stephanie ordered him to get in the ring and apologize.

Fans chanted “ECW.” Stephanie took credit for that because she claimed to have purchased ECW in 2001. Heyman said Lesnar’s victory over Randy Orton was in fact a victory for Raw. But when Lesnar gave Shane an F-5, it was over the line. So Heyman wanted to pay his client’s $500 fine. Heyman pulled out a brickload of money and tried to pay off with $1 bills. Stephanie slapped the money out of his hands and wondered what value Heyman had to the company. Stephanie said there was a storm coming Heyman’s way.

Heyman said the storm was his client Brock Lesnar. Heyman said Lesnar put Stephanie in a compromising position with the Board of Directors, which Stephanie must answer to. Heyman said they put Stephanie in a compromising position with her father because Lesnar was the only fighter she had. Heyman said Stephanie was the only heir to the boardroom. He asked her to accept the fine and accept the apology. She said apology accepted. Heyman had a devlish look in his eyes. Cole said “Perhaps Mr. Heyman dodged a bullet.” The purpose of this segment was for Stephanie to make it clear that she has power over Heyman, but Heyman making it clear that Lesnar is her most prized client. I think.

They showed an update about Balor, including his shoulder surgery. He’s counting the days until he can return on Twitter.

They did a profile on Reigns, just as they did the other three participants in the main event. The noteworthy thing was Reigns was the only one who didn’t get any interview time in his video. It was comprised only of highlights from previous matches.

Darren Young defeated Titus O’Neil (4:01)

Darren Young won after Titus O’Neil got a near fall, then started arguing with the referee. Young hit a crucifix for the banana peel pin. O’Neil jumped Bob Backlund afterwards with a kick to the chest. O’Neil laid out Young and screamed “You both owe me!” Dead silence for all of this.

Mick Foley told Stephanie he should have been out there with her earlier. Stephanie said she can take care of herself. Foley shifted the subject to the main event and recommended that everyone be barred from ringside for the match. Stephanie agreed. Rollins walked in and said he felt like this would be his night and he wouldn’t let Stephanie down. Stephanie said she knew he wouldn’t and they hugged.

Owens eliminated Cass at 12:41 with the frog splash. There were several toe-to-toe showdowns between Cass and Reigns, the final one ending with Reigns hitting a backbreaker, but Cass using the Big Boot to send Reigns over the top rope. Cass also fell over the top rope and went to the floor hard. Rollins followed with a tope, but Owens dropped Rollins across the barricade. Then Reigns flew over the top rope with a tope onto Owens and Rollins, neither of whom made much of a catch.

Rollins eliminated Reigns at 23:48. The second segment of the match opened with Reigns hitting a Power Bomb on Rollins, who hit a superplex on Owens for the Tower of Doom spot. Owens kicked out at two. Rollins hit the Falcon Arrow on Reigns for another near fall. Later, Rollins went for the springboard knee, but Rollins caught him in mid-air with the Superman Punch, but Rollins kicked out. Rollins kicked Reigns, but Owens superkicked Rollins.

Owens gave Rollins the Cannonball. He attempted one on Reigns, but Reigns caught him with a Superman punch for a two count. Rollins went for a Pedigree on Reigns, but Reigns reversed it into a schoolboy cradle, then hit the one-armed power bomb for another great near fall. “This is Awesome” chants. Reigns hit another Superman Punch to Owens outside the ring, then a Spear to Rollins.

Then out of nowhere, HHH came out of the crowd and gave Reigns a Pedigree on the floor. Crowd erupted. HHH put Rollins back in the ring and Rollins pinned Reigns. Not counting his cameos in various promotional packages, this was HHH’s first Raw appearance since the WrestleMania go-home show.

Owens pinned Rollins to win the WWE Universal Championship at 25:03. HHH rolled a beaten-down Owens into the ring, making it appear that HHH wanted the Universal Championship on Rollins. HHH lifted Owens up, then turned to his right and kicked Rollins in the gut.

The place went crazy as HHH gave Rollins the Pedigree. A stunned Owens watched in disbelief as HHH ordered him to cover Rollins, which he did to win the championship to a monster babyface pop. Foley and Stephanie were shocked as HHH took the Universal Championship off Foley’s shoulder and gave it to Owens. HHH glared at Foley and Stephanie before he walked away. The show went off the air with the crowd chanting in unison “You deserve it.”

Daily Pro Wrestling History (08/29): SummerSlam 1992 at Wembley Stadium

Ryback: I walked away from a 3 year, $1.5 million WWE deal

On the debut episode of his podcast released on Monday, Ryan “Ryback” Reeves opened up about what led to him leaving WWE.

Reeves said he was thankful for everything WWE gave him and appreciated how it shaped him into who he is, but noted that he didn’t agree with them on a business standpoint on a lot of things. He said that he doesn’t live in fear and that led to him doing things the way that he did.

He said that he was never the company’s guy and wondered why they put the Intercontinental Championship on him in 2015. After winning the title, he was presented with a new contract offer. Reeves said he wasn’t happy with the offer considering what he had done for the company.

But Reeves said he didn’t leave because of monetary value of the offer. “Not about a money issue, just so everybody knows, I walked away from the WWE, the contract offer that I walked away from was a three-year $1.5 million contract.” Reeves said.

Reeves mentioned that there were other things he wasn’t happy about. He said that there were merchandising opportunities that didn’t pan out and noted how expensive travel expenses were, saying the way professional wrestling has always done things isn’t always right.

Reeves said that he had been lied to at many times in his career about booking and other opportunities. He claimed that Vince McMahon told him that he would be the number one heel in the company and have the title put on him if he listened to McMahon and read his promos as they were scripted. Reeves also claimed that he was supposed to face AJ Styles at WrestleMania 32, with McMahon telling him that he would “squash that little twerp.”

Though he was told that by McMahon, Reeves said that he didn’t necessarily believe he would squash Styles given the way he was brought into the company.

That changed and Reeves would go on to face Kalisto on the WrestleMania 32 kickoff show. He said that he was set to sign a new contract but sent a revised offer to the company after not being happy about how he was handled.

On his last day at television, Reeves said he knew that WWE wasn’t going to accept the revised offer and thought the booking of the show was intended to make him look bad before he left. He claimed he told Mark Carrano to take him off television, but didn’t talk to McMahon because he had been lied to too many times before.

He said that he will always be thankful for the WWE, but he’s allowed to feel betrayed about certain things and doesn’t have to go home and not talk about it. He again noted that he doesn’t live in fear, saying he didn’t burn a bridge and was only telling the truth.

He claimed that he was offered magazine covers but WWE wouldn’t let him do them despite allowing other talent to. He said that WWE wanted Roman Reigns to appear on a cover instead of him at one point.

Co-host Pat Buck asked Reeves if he felt it was a personal decision by WWE, but Reeves said it happened to others as well. Reeves felt like WWE’s goal should be making sure that every wrestler’s brand is as strong as possible.

The full almost hour-long conversation with Reeves and Buck is available to listen to below:

AAA TripleMania XXIV results: Psycho Clown vs. Pagano

Australian Suicide won a battle royal for the 2016 Copa TripleMania featuring La Parka, Elegido, Taurus, Hernandez, Pimpinela Escarlata, El Hijo del Pirata Morgan, Daga, Super Fly, Zorro, and Mamba

Battle royal didn’t last very long, with La Parka being the final man eliminated. Last two in the ring were Daga and Australian Suicide, and it turned into a singles match. I guess this is similar to the Gauntlet for the Gold TNA used to do.

Lots of fast-paced action. Suicide hit a really cool shooting star press to the floor.

Australian Suicide won with a corkscrew but Daga had his foot on the ropes. He was awarded the cup after the match, but Daga jumped him, destroyed the trophy, and took off his mask.

Averno & Chessman went to a no contest with Mary & Faby Apache

This wasn’t bad when it was just a wrestling match, but it was also full of interference and weapons and there wasn’t a finish to boot. Gran Apache was the special referee. The women jumped the men at the start and ran wild.

Heel ref action started as Gran Apache stopped his daughters from doing anything, allowing the men to jump them from behind. Faby did a cool hurricanrana to the floor but was posted by Averno. Averno was about to hit one of the sisters with a bottle, but Gran Apache stopped him, which got him sent packing by the rudos.

Faby was about to pin Chessman after a hurricanrana but Averno hit her with a light tube. Gran Apache made the save, but then Ricky Marvin came out and laid him out with a chair. Marvin then bit his forehead when he was busted open. Faby was somehow busted open as well. No finish it seems as Faby was stretchered out and Gran Apache went to the back.

Drago & Aerostar defeated Paul London & Matt Cross, Hijo del Fantasma & Garza Jr., and AAA Tag Team Champions Angelico & Jack Evans to win the titles

Fenix no-showed, so Garza Jr. took his place. Largely a stunt show, but a fun one with a bunch of cool dives. Aerostar has the coolest entrance gear. Fantasma and Garza did stereo moonsaults to wipe out two teams.

Matt Cross did a Sasuke special that connected on the outside. London hit a shooting star press but Fantasma broke it up. Fantasma took him to the outside and did a suicide dive, then Aerostar followed with a huge tope that largely sent him into fans past the barricade.

Aerostar did a big corkscrew dive, wiping out most of the teams as London went to do something on the top rope but Drago misted him, kept rolling him around, then pinned him to with the match.

They did their Hall of Fame ceremony next. They inducted “Love Machine” Art Barr, as well as Dorian Roldan himself in what I guess was a surprise. I didn’t know you could induct yourself in your own hall of fame.

Johnny Mundo defeated Latin American Champion Pentagon Jr. to win the title

Solid match. Taya cut a promo before the match saying tonight would be Perromania. A lot of it was Mundo working on Pentagon and taking him out with some big moves, including a corkscrew to the outside.

Mundo missed Starship Pain, which allowed Pentagon to lay him out. Hernandez grabbed Pentagon but Mundo superkicked Hernandez, then superkicked the ref. Pentagon hit the double footstomp and went for the Pentadriver, but the referee was still down.

Taya came into the ring and turned on Pentagon, hitting him with a low blow. Mundo covered for the win and the title.

Vampiro came out with the Lucha Underground guys for the next match and cut a promo, then introduced Rey Mysterio Jr.

Rey Mysterio Jr., Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr. defeated Matanza Cueto, Mil Muertes, & Marty “The Moth” Martinez

Another match that had a lot of good action. Dragon Azteca in particular looked really good. Matanza and Muertes were good in playing the heel monsters. Muertes and Matanza were going for stereo powerslams, but Azteca and Puma slid from behind and managed to send them to the outside. They tripped up the Moth then did a double dive to the floor.

Mysterio, Puma, and Azteca picked up the win.

Simon Pegg was on the video screen doing a short promo for Star Trek Beyond, or as it’s known in Mexico, Star Trek: Sin Limites.

AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion Texano Jr. defeated Brian Cage and Dr. Wagner Jr. in a triple threat match to retain his title

This was also pretty solid, though the stream wasn’t perfect for all of it. Cage was going for the screwdriver when Texano transitioned into a roll-up and got the win, retaining the title.

Psycho Clown defeated Pagano in a mask vs. hair match

I wouldn’t say this was a bad match, but it was more spectacle than a wrestling match. Tons of weapons and dangerous moves used throughout, sometimes to the point of overkill. It’s something different enough that it stands out, but it went just a little too long for what it was supposed to be.

They took each other out with a bunch of dives in the early part of this match. Psycho Clown’s mask was ripped up and he was already a bloody mess as there were steel chair shots and barbed wire already in play.

They brawled to the outside where Psycho Clown laid out Pagano with a Spanish fly from on top of the barricade on top of a bunch of chairs… ouch.

Big senton to the floor by Psycho Clown took out Pagano. Both guys were busted open now. Psycho Clown, channeling Abdullah the Butch, grabbed a fork and stabbed Pagano on the forehead.

Pagano went for a splash on a prone Psycho Clown, but he dodged at the last moment and was sent through the table. Pagano countered back with a back suplex onto a table in the corner of the ring. Psycho Clown splashed Pagano from the top rope while covering himself in barbed wire, then hit a Canadian Destroyer. He followed that with a powerbomb onto two chairs, then took out another table.

Oh, here we go — thumbtacks were introduced and Psycho Clown suplexed Pagano through the table. Psycho Clown was about to make the cover when suddenly Damien and Nicho (original Psicosis) hit the ring and laid him out.

Dr. Wagner Jr. then came out to make the save. They hugged it out, but it was a swerve as Wagner laid him out as well. Pagano covered and heel ref Tirantes Jr. made a fast count, but Psycho Clown still kicked out. They set a table on fire. As they were setting this up, Psycho Clown recovered and speared Pagano through the table and pinned him, saving his mask.

Dr. Wagner cut a promo after the match challenging Psycho Clown to a mask vs. mask match. They did the same promo last year but with Caristico and Rey Mysterio Jr. and that never came to fruition. These kind of challenges usually don’t pan out. After both Psycho Clown and Pagano cut promos, Pagano’s hair was cut.

Not a bad show at all. Can’t speak for those that listened to English commentary, but aside from some stream issues here and there this was was a million times better than the trainwreck that was last year’s show.

I should mention that I watched the version with Spanish commentary. From what I understand, I picked the right choice as reports were that this was not Matt Striker’s night. Just all of his normal quirks that turn people off were well represented, apparently.

Figure Four Weekly: Figure Four Weekly 8/22/2016: Gawker destroyed by Hulk Hogan – While there had been hints that it could happen, it still came as a shock last week that, thanks to the series of events stemming from Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker Media, the flagship Gawker blog would be shutting down operations a few days later. It all stemmed from the bankruptcy auction for Gawker Media’s assets, where the bidders ended up being Ziff Davis and Unimodia, the subsidiary of Univision that oversees Fusion and its sister sites like The Onion, AV Club, and The Root… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Harry Fujiwara, better known as Mr. Fuji and the Great Fuji passed away this morning at the age of 82Fujiwara had a long run with WWF as a manager, playing a stereotypical Japanese role after many runs in the promotion as part of heel Japanese tag teams with either Professor Toru Tanaka and later Masa Saito. He was a solid headliner who worked virtually everywhere at one time or another and held both the U.S. and Canadian heavyweight titles. He had been living in Tennessee since his retirement from WWE in the mid-90s. Fujiwara began his career with 50th State Wrestling in Hawaii in 1962, and first came to the mainland in 1964 in California. He was best known for his role as a manager of Don Muraco, Demolition, Powers of Pain, Yokozuna, and Killer Khan, as well as endless matches on WWWF major arena midcards and small town main events with the likes of Chief Jay Strongbow and Tony Garea.

Matt Striker & Hugo Savinovich are doing the English language announcing for the TripleMania iPPV tonight, which says they weren’t permanently scarred by the atrocity that was the show last year. This year’s show actually looks quite good, and I know a lot of the Americans who have never done TripleMania are pretty excited as it’ll be either the largest or one of the largest crowds several of them have ever worked in front of.

Today is the 14th anniversary of a monumental MMA event, the Pride show at Tokyo National Stadium that drew 71,000 fans, still the all-time attendance record for MMA, headlined by Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Mirko Cro Cop, and also featuring Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Bob Sapp and Royce Gracie vs. Hidehiko Yoshida.

Two of the biggest pro wrestling events ever in Los Angeles, and as far as people wanting to buy tickets, the biggest of the last 50 years, had anniversaries over the weekend.

  • On August 27, 1971, the Fred Blassie vs. John Tolos headlined show at the Los Angeles Coliseum drew 25,781 fans and set the all-time record live gate for U.S. pro wrestling as the culmination of one of the greatest angles in wrestling history, started when Tolos blinded Blassie with Monsel’s Powder on KCOP television a few months earlier. Bill Watts essentially copied that idea nine years later with Junkyard Dog vs. Michael Hayes and set the all-time indoor gate record at the Superdome.
  • On August 28, 1993, Konnan, suspended from wrestling in Mexico after losing a retirement match to Cien Caras due to the interference of Jake Roberts, headlined a three-way called La Revancha with Konnan vs. Caras vs. Roberts at the Los Angeles Sports Arena which drew the all-time record crowd for the building of 17,500 with 8,000 turned away at the door in what is still the most heated pro wrestling event I’ve ever been to live, and actually by a wide margin.  A music video from the show, the guy in the purple outfit who is really small is an 18-year-old Rey Misterio Jr.  Lots of an amazing Eddy Guerrero, the father of Volador Jr., (Volador), Santo, Octagon, Love Machine and the other stars of that era.

Thanks for all the nice comments on this week’s Observer. Our weekend Wrestling Observer Radio show is up with coverage of last night’s UFC show, more on Randy Orton having a job for life, C.M. Punk’s quest to become a UFC fighter and NXT.

WWE

  • The Headbangers are scheduled as the eighth team in the Smackdown tag team tournament and will most likely face Rhino & Heath Slater, although they could also face The Vaudevillains or Hype Bros.
  • For whatever this is worth, the cable guide for tomorrow on some places listed Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens for the Universal title as the main event. Probably a miscommunication regarding the four-way match which also includes Big Cass and Roman Reigns for the title that headlines tomorrow’s show.
  • There’s a WrestleMania reference in this presidential election story here. (thanks to Chris Cruise)

UFC

  • Carlos Condit certainly talked like a man who had one foot out the door at the post-show press conference after last night’s UFC show in Vancouver where he lost to Demian Maia in 1:52.
  • Last night’s UFC on FOX did 2.22 million viewers based on the fast nationals. The number is normal range for a UFC summer show, but it’s a very misleading number.  It won’t the show the usual growth most likely because for UFC on FOX, the biggest audience is always drawn after 10 p.m., and the show ended at 10 p.m.  The short main event is never good for ratings.  Plus, several markets pre-empted the UFC for NFL preseason football, so the 2.22 million number is an NFL number in a few markets which inflates the number.  Even though it’s preseason, NFL competition is going to hurt a UFC TV event, probably significantly.  The show was second in the 18-49 demo but of the four networks, based on the overnights, FOX finished last with total viewers.

In picks from last night:

  • 4-1:  Mike Sempervive, Josh Nation, Ryan Frederick, Frontrow Brian
  • 3-2:  Dave Meltzer, John Pollock, Mike Sawyer, David Bixenspan
  • 2-3:  Steve Juon, Paul Fontaine

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Paul Orndorff was announced for the 2/18 Legends of Wrestling event at the Holy Cross Gym in Winnipeg.
  • Insane Championship Wrestling announced that The Dudley Boyz (billed as Team 3D) will appear at their November 20th show in Glasgow, Scotland. It’s the first announced appearance for the team after leaving WWE.

  • Promociones EMW on 9/2 at the Auditorio in Tijuana has The Psycho Circus vs. Damian 666 & Nicho & Pagano, so either Pagano is bald or Psycho Clown will be there without his mask. Pretty good bet which one of those will be the case.

Daily Pro Wrestling History (08/28): WWF SummerSlam 1989

Mr. Fuji passes away at 82 years old

WWE Hall of Famer Mr. Fuji (real name Harry Fujiwara) passed away on Sunday morning at 82 years old.

WWE.com broke the news of Fuji’s passing on Sunday afternoon, but didn’t provide any further details on what caused it.

Fuji had a lengthy career inside of the ring, debuting in Hawaii in the 1960s. He held the WWF Tag Team Championship five times, teaming with both Professor Tanaka and Mr. Saito.

But modern fans are likely more familiar with Fuji as a heel manager in the WWF during the 1980s and 1990s. Fuji managed Don Muraco, Demolition, Yokozuna, and others during his time in the role.

He was prominently featured in the WrestleMania IX main event, where he interfered and threw salt in Bret Hart’s eyes. Hulk Hogan then came down to the ring and Fuji challenged him to face Yokozuna in a match, with Hogan winning the WWF title in the process.

Fuji competed inside of the ring at WrestleMania V, teaming with The Powers of Pain in a losing effort against Demolition.

Daily Pro Wrestling History (08/25): WWE SummerSlam 2002

NXT & CWC Video Highlights: The quarterfinals are set

NXT Video Highlights —

Tye Dillinger vs. Wesley Blake

Wednesday night’s episode of NXT TV featured two matches taped in Brooklyn, with Tye Dillinger vs. Wesley Blake starting off the show. And with the crowd fully behind him, it was Dillinger who came out on top of the recently repackaged Blake.

The Authors of Pain vs. TM61

The Authors of Pain survived a tough challenge to defeat TM61 in the second match taped from Brooklyn. And maybe most notably, they were finally individually named as Akam and Rezer.

CWC Video Highlights —

Rich Swann vs. Lince Dorado

The quarterfinals were set after the second round concluded on Wednesday night’s episode of the Cruiserweight Classic.

After defeating Lince Dorado in a back and forth match that showed the aerial ability of both men, Rich Swann awaited the winner of the night’s Johnny Gargano vs. TJ Perkins main event in the next round.

Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Drew Gulak

In a largely mat-based match, Zack Sabre Jr. was able to pick up a win over Drew Gulak after he trapped him in a pin. It will be Sabre vs. Noam Dar in the next round.

Johnny Gargano vs. TJ Perkins

Selling a leg injury from Brooklyn’s TakeOver show that hadn’t even happened yet when this was filmed, Gargano tapped out to Perkins’ kneebar.

After picking up the surprising victory, it will be Perkins vs. Swann in the quarterfinals. And they’ll be joined by Sabre vs. Dar, Akira Tozawa vs. Gran Metalik, and Brian Kendrick vs. Kota Ibushi.

Rich Swann is ready for the quarterfinals

Swann said he went out there and had a heck of a match with Dorado, showing why he deserves to be in the quarterfinals.

Drew Gulak wants a rematch against Zack Sabre Jr.

Gulak said it was a hell of a fight against Sabre, vowing to come back with more tricks up his sleeve if he gets the chance to face him again.

Zack Sabre Jr. says you fight your closest friends the hardest

Ahead of his quarterfinals match with Dar, Sabre talked about their friendship. But Sabre noted that he’s going to stretch, kick, and punish Dar before they have a nice cup of tea afterwards.

TJ Perkins dismisses that his win was a surprise

Perkins took exception to those who thought his win was surprising, saying he’s not stunned and no one else in the world should be.

Johnny Gargano deals with a devastating week

After failing to capture the NXT Tag Team Championship at TakeOver and being knocked out of the CWC, Gargano wasn’t ready to talk about the losses yet.

WWE Cruiserweight Classic results: Johnny Gargano vs. TJ Perkins

Tonight’s episode start off with a recap of last week’s show, as well as highlights for tonight’s show. Round two concludes tonight, with the quarterfinals starting next week.

Rich Swann defeated Lince Dorado

Lince Dorado says he expected to be here because it’s all he’s ever dreamed about. He’s a hybrid luchador and will go toe-to-toe with anyone. He wants to showcase to the world what he can do, and that people should follow their dreams because they can come true.

They replay the video from a few weeks ago about Rich Swann, saying he grew up with a bad crowd but wrestling saved him, and people aren’t going to be expecting what he puts out there on the Cruiserweight Classic.

Good match, their styles complimented each other here and they had a good back and forth high flying match. I hope Dorado gets looks in other places as he’s pretty good. Dorado got big air wiping out Swann early with a springboard crossbody to the floor. Swann took him down and put him in a cool submission, kind of like a stretch muffler but Dorado’s neck was on Swann’s knee.

Dorado went for a German suplex but Swann got on his feet and rolled around, hitting a DDT. Swann hit a standing 450 but Dorado cradled him for a cool near fall. Dorado missed the shooting star press, which allowed Swann to hit a really cool looking phoenix splash for the win.

Swann will face the winner of the TJ Perkins vs. Johnny Gargano match later tonight in the next round.

They showed the closing moments of The Revival vs. Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa tag title match from NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II this past weekend, where Gargano was submitted after The Revival took out his knee.

Gargano was interviewed backstage, his knee was getting taped up as he talked about tonight’s match with Perkins. A lot of people expect him to win the tournament, and he doesn’t want to let anyone down. He’ll pour his heart out in the ring tonight and will reach one step closer to winning the CWC.

Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Drew Gulak

Drew Gulak was told early in his wrestling career that he’d probably never make it, but he was determined. What makes him better is that he has a clear view of what you’re doing, and one move could put you out. He’s super confident.

Zack Sabre Jr.’s video is replayed as well, saying Harry Potter is not the only wizard from Great Britain, and he’s driven by his love of pro wrestling.

Gulak didn’t want to shake hands before the match.

Very good technical match. They worked a mat-based style since both are proficient in that area. Gulak broke out and tried to jump off the middle rope but Sabre caught him in an armbar. Gulak countered with a Gory special and worked on Sabre’s neck.

Gulak transitioned into a Boston crab but Sabre countered with a roll-up. Sabre got a kimura in but Gulak bodyslammed him, his foot hitting the rope upon landing. Big time palm strikes knocked Sabre loopy. Gulak tried the dragon sleeper, but Sabre somehow transitioned into a package pin and scored the win.

Gulak was reluctant to shake Sabre’s hand as he made his exit. Sabre will face Noam Dar in the next round.

TJ Perkins defeated Johnny Gargano

Another really good match. Out of everyone in the CWC, Gargano is probably the best overall worker not named Kota Ibushi. TJP has the charisma and work to make it very far. Some really good back and forth to start things off. Perkins caught Gargano in a leg scissors and even dabbed while doing it.

They went to the apron as Gargano knocked Perkins to the floor and did a running senton, his legs crashing on the bell table. Perkins made a comeback but Gargano took him to the top rope and looked like he was going for a powerbomb, but instead threw him face-first into the turnbuckle. That was a scary spot!

He lawn darted TJP into the other side of the ring but Perkins rolled through Gargano and targeted his injured leg with a leglock. Surprisingly, Gargano did end up tapping out, giving TJP the win. It’s funny that this was taped way before Takeover, but they still knew how to book Gargano’s loss. Kind of shows long-term booking can go a long way.

The quarterfinals are:

  • Akira Tozawa vs. Gran Metalik
  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Noam Dar
  • Brian Kendrick vs. Kota Ibushi
  • Rich Swann vs. TJ Perkins

Really good episode this week. All three matches were strong. Not match of the year levels or anything like that, but all three were really fun TV matches.

Daily Update: ROH Field of Honor, Miz vs. D. Bryan, Balor injury, McMahon’s B-Day

ROH: Field of Honor Preview

This Saturday, Aug. 27th, from the MCU Park (1904 Surf Ave.) in Brooklyn, NY starting at 6pm, Ring of Honor takes the diamond for the third consecutive Field of Honor!

ROH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL: Adam Cole (c) vs Jay Lethal vs Tetsuya Naito vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

  • ROH’s newest Champion Adam Cole BAYBAY will defend his title against three other men. Jay Lethal, who had his 427day reign, the fourth longest in ROH history, ended by Cole, will be looking to strike Cole out to regain his belt. Meanwhile, IWGP Heavyweight Champions Naito and Tanahashi will each be vying to become just the second Japanese wrestler to win the ROH World Title (Takeshi Morishima held the championship for eight months in 2007).

ROH World Tag Team Championship – Gauntlet Match: The Addiction (“Almighty” Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) defend the titles against the winners of a 5-team Gauntlet Match

  • The gauntles will feature the Briscoes, War Machine, All Night Express, Toru Yano and Gedo, and Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara. The Briscoes are eight time ROH World Tag Team champions, but War Machine and ANX are former champs as well. Yano and Gedo compete for the NJPW faction “CHAOS” while Cheeseburger and Ferrara are products of the ROH Dojo.

IWGP Intercontinental Championship: “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin (c) vs Donovan Dijak

  • This is the first time the IWGP Intercontinental Championship has been defended in the U.S. Elgin became champion in June in the firstever Ladder Match in NJPW history, capturing the title from Kenny “The Cleaner” Omega. Dijak won the 2015 Top Prospect Tournament and is one of the fastest rising stars in wrestling.

Special Challenge Match: Kyle O’Reilly vs Katsuyori Shibata

  • Cole’s former best friend and tag team partner Kyle O’Reilly was the first man to “congratulate” Cole on his win, by laying out the new champ. O’Reilly has his sights sets on winning the world title, but first he must shut out Katsuyori Shibata. This marks the first ever singles match between these two incredible performers. Shibata made his US debut last weekend at “Death Before Dishonor” while Kyle is coming back from a shoulder injury. Shibata is the current NEVER Openweight Champion but the title is not on the line.

ROH World Television Championship: Bobby Fish (c) vs EVIL

  • Fish successfully defended the title twice last weekend, beating Mark Briscoe and Katsuyori Shibata but now faces one of the most improved members of the NJPW roster. Last year at “Field of Honor” Takaaki Watanabe earned a World TV title shot by winning the “Golden Gauntlet” but returned to NJPW in October, joining “Los Ingobernables de Japon” as the “King of Darkness” EVIL.

8 MAN SHOWDOWN: Bullett Club (Young Bucks, Yujiro Takahashi, and Hangman Page) vs Motor City Machine Guns, Lio Rush, and ACH.

  • “Bullet Club” looks to continue their global domination in Brooklyn. The Young Bucks successfully defended their IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship against the Motor City Machine Guns last Saturday at the finals of NJPW’s Super J Cup event but the Guns’ Chris Sabin looks to get even with Hangman Page as well for hanging him in May when Page joined “BulletClub”.

KUSHIDA vs Dalton Castle

  • These two have met before and this rematch promises to be very competitive. KUSHIDA won the Super JCup last Saturday while Castle took Kazuchika Okada to the limit at “Death Before Dishonor”. Both men are extremely popular with fans around the world and both are accomplished mat wrestlers.

Goldberg remembers his feud with The Rock, talks Conor McGregor and WWE2K17

  • On being in WWE2K17: “On October 11th, you’ll get to see me and Brock lesnar go at it one more time and I’m sure he’ll be trying to get that loss back from WrestleMania XX. the reality is when this game comes out, you’ll get to see me in the ring against new guys or guys like The Undertaker who you never saw me get in the ring with. As a father, a 49 year old, an old timer, it’s an honour to be in the game. It also makes me a great dad since it’s pretty cool for a ten year old”
  • Would he step back in the ring? “I do muay thai five days a week and wrestling pales in comparison to getting kicked in the face and thrown around like that five days a week. I’m a little lighter than I used to be but trust me, I can still bring the pain….Brock”
  • Does he have fond memories of his match with The Rock back in 2003? “Yeah definitely. I wish he would’ve let me do a bit more physical stuff or let me do a bit more to him but at the end of the day, you gotta keep your face pretty if you’re gonna be the Hollywood guy so I completely understand that but looking back on it, the fact that they would put me in the ring with him, first, that’s a huge honor so if I look back at some of the things I did back then, I sit in awe that I was in that position and they let it happen.”
  • Views on Conor McGregor’s comments on pro wrestlers in WWE. “First and foremost he’s trying to get some publicity. All I can say is, when I was in the business back in the day, if he had said that, there were a number of guys leaving him in a pool of blood because some of the guys that I tangled with, guys who taught me what I know, are not guys to mess around with and I personally believe there’s some guys around now who could do it but they’ve just chosen professional wrestling to be their endeavour. Just because they’re not doing it, doesn’t mean they couldn’t be good at it.”

Daily Update: NJPW, Bayley to Raw, Ratings improve, Razor Ramon, Goldberg

New Japan Pro Wrestling Announces Big Match-Ups

Kazuchika Okada will defend his IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Naomichi Marufuji at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s King of Pro Wrestling show in October. The show is the biggest NJPW event between now and WrestleKingdom in January. The match was set up in this year’s G1 tournament when Marufuji picked up a win over Okada.

The cards for NJPW’s September Destruction in Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Kobe shows are also out. KUSHIDA will defend his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title against BUSHI, and Katsuyori Shibata will defend his NEVER Openweight title against Bobby Fish in Tokyo. Kenny Omega will defend his Tokyo Dome title shot against YOSHI-HASHI in Hiroshima. And IWGP Intercontinental Champion Michael Elgin will defend against Tetsuya Naito in Kobe.

The tour will see Adam Cole’s return to NJPW, as he’ll face Will Ospreay in Hiroshima and will team with the Young Bucks to challenge for Ricochet, Matt Sydal, and Satoshi Kojima’s NEVER six-man tag titles in Kobe.

RAW Receives Ratings Boost

The last ten weeks of RAW ratings as compared to previous years

Without the competition of the Summer Olympics, RAW was back up to 3.3 million viewers last night, virtually identical to the last pre-Olympic show on August 1st. It was down from the 3.72 million viewers that the post SummerSlam RAW did in 2015.

The three hours averaged 3,462,000 in hour 1, 3,370,000 in hour 2 and fell to 3,113,000 in the final hour, which had a 12 minute overrun. The 8% drop in hour 3 was slightly higher than it had been in recent weeks, which may have been viewer burnout after NXT Takeover on Saturday and the 6 hour SummerSlam on Sunday night.

The show was 4th for the night on cable behind Rizzoli and Isles, Major Crimes and the O’Reilly Factor. The three individual hours of RAW were the top 3 shows for the night on cable in the 18-49 demo.

Smackdown is tonight from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.

The big event is UFC 202 on 8/20 at the T Mobile Arena, featuring a rematch of the biggest money fight in company history–Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz. WWE Raw video highlights: Bayley joins the show

WWE Raw Video Highlights —

Finn Balor relinquishes the WWE Universal Championship due to injury

Shortly before Raw went on the air, it was announced that Finn Balor would have to relinquish his Universal Championship only hours after winning the title. Balor suffered a shoulder injury that is feared to be a labrum tear after Seth Rollins powerbombed him into the barricade at SummerSlam.

Raw opened with Balor addressing the crowd about his injury status. He said the championship represented a lifetime of sacrifice, but his injury forces him to vacate the title. He vowed that it would be the first thing he comes for once he returns to the ring.

A series of matches was made for Raw, with the winners advancing to a fatal four-way that would crown the new WWE Universal Champion next week.

Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins

The first in a series of matches to determine who would advance to next week’s four-way for the title saw Rollins take on Sami Zayn. Rollins picked up the win with a pedigree after Zayn suffered a storyline ankle injury during the match.

Seth Rollins addresses Finn Balor’s injury

Rollins addressed the crowd during a commercial break, running down the audience for being concerned about what the Universal title looked like at SummerSlam. He said Balor won the battle but didn’t win the war, then mocked Zayn after their match.

Neville vs. Kevin Owens

The second match to determine who would advance to next week pitted Neville against Kevin Owens, and it was Owens who advanced after receiving some help from Chris Jericho.

The New Day celebrate their SummerSlam victory

After The New Day retained their WWE Tag Team Championship at SummerSlam, the trio celebrated their now year-long reign. But their issues with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows weren’t over, as The Club interrupted their celebration.

Big E vs. Karl Anderson

Big E made his official return to the ring after a lengthy absence with a storyline groin injury. Big E picked up the win over Anderson in his return match after Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods stopped Gallows from interfering.

Titus O’Neil lays out Darren Young and Bob Backlund

Titus O’Neil delivered a long promo targeted at Bob Backlund and Darren Young. Backlund interrupted the promo, but it only led to O’Neil laying out both Backlund and Young.

Big Cass vs. Rusev

Big Cass was the third participant to advance to next week’s match to crown the next Universal Champion after Rusev walked out of their match still selling the beating he took from Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

Bayley joins the show

Bayley was finally called up to the main roster and joined Raw’s women’s division. Mick Foley announced her addition to the roster, calling Bayley the hottest free agent in the division.

Bayley immediately challenged WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte to a match, but Charlotte offered Dana Brooke as a replacement instead.

Bayley vs. Dana Brooke

Bayley picked up her first main roster singles win, defeating Brooke with the Bayley-to-Belly suplex.

The cruiserweight division gets a debut date

Raw’s cruiserweight division will officially be debuting on September 19th. Rich Swann, Noam Dar, Brian Kendrick, and TJ Perkins were highlighted in the video hyping the division.

Braun Strowman destroys another victim

Braun Strowman again made quick work of a local competitor, this time squashing Johnny Knockout.

The Club interrupt The Dudley Boyz

The Dudley Boyz teased earlier in the day that they would be saying goodbye to the WWE Universe on Raw. The veteran team tried to do so, but were interrupted by both The Shining Stars and The Club.

The Dudley Boyz say goodbye

After being beaten down by Anderson and Gallows, the Dudleyz received a strong ovation from the crowd as they seem to be leaving WWE.

Roman Reigns vs. Chris Jericho

Reigns faced Jericho in the show’s main event to determine the final participant in next week’s Universal Championship match. After a long match and attempted interference from Owens, Reigns came out on top after hitting the spear.

Raw fallout: Bayley reflects on finally being called up

Bayley was interviewed after her Raw debut, saying that it was crazier than she could have ever imagined and was everything she’s dreamt of since she was 10 years old.

She noted that she won the NXT Women’s Championship in the Barclays Center last year, and now made her debut in the same building on the anniversary of that win.

Raw fallout: Cesaro gets frustrated

After not appearing on Raw, Cesaro vented his frustrations about getting moved to the kickoff show on SummerSlam and not being given a chance to become the next Universal Champion.

Brock Lesnar, Chris Jericho in heated altercation at SummerSlam

The ending of the Randy Orton vs. Brock Lesnar SummerSlam match, which went pretty much as planned, led to a verbal and somewhat physical confrontation between Lesnar and Chris Jericho last night.

According to multiple sources, Jericho came to the gorilla position just as the match ended, apparently to see if Orton was okay and to find out what exactly happened. He asked Michael Hayes what the finish was or if that was the finish. Hayes wouldn’t answer him at which point Jericho said, “That’s bullsh*t.”

Jericho said that just as Lesnar came back from the ring. Lesnar thought he was talking about his match, and called Jericho a pussy according to one version, or “shut up” according to another, and to mind his own business. The two got face-to-face and started exchanging words, with one version saying they were shouting at each other the whole time.

Lesnar pushed Jericho with his fingers, and Jericho did what was described as the “Rousey-Tate” foreheed press. One version also had Jericho shoving Lesnar to the wall at one point.

They got tangled up against the wall and Lesnar told Jericho to punch him or kiss him. Paul “HHH” Levesque jumped in quickly and broke it up. It was heated enough that they went back at it at which time Vince McMahon broke it up. Jericho started yelling about Lesnar and McMahon told Jericho that it was all a work and to be professional.

Levesque reportedly told McMahon that Lesnar started it, and Jericho was just standing up for himself but there were more words exchanged.

Jericho saw Orton and got mad, which everyone noted was because he was concerned with Orton’s health and safety. Orton reportedly assured him that he knew the way everything was coming.

Finn Balor suffers injury at WWE SummerSlam

This story was updated late Monday afternoon.

Finn Balor’s crowning moment of winning the Universal title over Seth Rollins Sunday at WWE SummerSlam may be for naught as he was injured, believed to be suffered after he was power bombed into the barricade by Rollins.

The severity of the injury is unknown at this point as he’s scheduled for an evaluation Monday at television, but his arm was in a sling post-show and there was fear he would need surgery.

ESPN’s Arash Markazi tweeted Monday afternoon that an MRI showed a possible labrum tear, but the extent of the injury won’t be known until he has a surgical consultation this week. He continued that surgery is needed, Balor could be out of action for 8-12 weeks.

If that is the case, it will require some major overhauls in creative plans as he was scheduled to headline all the Raw brand shows as the Universal Champion.

Of note, Balor appeared Monday morning with new WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte on Good Morning America and was not wearing any type of sling.

WWE SummerSlam live results: Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

Preview by Joseph Currier

WWE’s biggest event of the summer is scheduled for August 21st, when SummerSlam will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

We’re looking for your thoughts on this show, as well as the ROH, NXT, UFC and New Japan Super J Cup shows this weekend, with a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected].

Following the WWE Draft, much of the build for the show has been centered on the Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton interpromotional match. SmackDown’s Orton showed up uninvited to Raw to deliver an RKO to Lesnar, and Raw’s Lesnar subsequently made an appearance on SmackDown to get his revenge.

The Beast and the Viper will settle their differences inside of the ring at SummerSlam.

The show will also feature the crowning of the first WWE Universal Champion, as Finn Balor and Seth Rollins will face off for the newly-created title. Balor earned his title shot by winning a four-way match and defeating Roman Reigns on the first post-draft edition of Raw. Rollins was given a free pass to the title opportunity by Stephanie McMahon.

Dean Ambrose will also defend his WWE Championship against Dolph Ziggler after Ziggler earned the shot at SmackDown’s top title. And AJ Styles will battle John Cena in a continuation of their month’s long feud. Styles defeated Cena with the help of The Club at Money in the Bank, but Cena pinned Styles in a six-man tag match at Battleground.

After Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte on Raw to become the new WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte will look to get her title back in a match with the Boss.

**********

THE HYPE BROS & AMERICAN ALPHA & USOS def. THE VAUDEVILLANS & TYLER BREEZE & FANDANGO & THE ASCENSION

The big story is that the Usos look to be going heel to feud with American Alpha, which makes sense. The finish saw American Alpha do the Grand Amplitude on Simon Gotch, but Jey Uso tagged in Gable. Gable didn’t know and Jey pinned Gotch. Gable gave Jey a dirty look and in the celebration, Hype Bros & Alpha were holding each other’s hands while the Usos were to the side. Hype Bros also seemed annoyed with the Usos.

This was a long match that the crowd didn’t react much to, but there was solid work with a good finish. The crowd booed the Usos when they came out so they are just reacting to the crowd. Obviously, Jordan & Gable were the most over.

NEVILLE & SAMI ZAYN def. THE DUDLEYS

They were pushing the Dudleys having issues before the match. Nothing much to this, but they were pushing that Neville & Zayn were a pretty good team so they may be put together regularly. Bubba went for a clothesline on Neville but he moved, so Bubba clotheslined Devon. Zayn hit the Helluva kick on Bubba and Neville pinned him with the Red Arrow.

Nothing much to this match and nothing like you’d expect for Neville & Zayn, but it wasn’t like they were in a position to do much.

BEST OF SEVEN (Match 1): CESARO VS. SHEAMUS

Sheamus won the match after he hit a thumb to the eye when he was in the sharpshooter. He then hit the Brogue kick for the pin.  Cesaro did a stand on the post, jumping onto the top rope for a springboard crossbody as the unique move. Good match and everything was solid, but the crowd was quiet most of the way until the finish that made the match just seem okay.

CHRIS JERICHO & KEVIN OWENS def. ENZO AMORE & BIG CASS

The match was about what you’d think it was: Enzo selling most of the way and Cass with the hot tag. Owens threw Cass into the post and did the cannonball into the barricade on them. In the ring, Owens did a pop up powerbomb on Enzo into a codebreaker by Jericho with Jericho pinning Enzo. Enzo was off on a few spots. Crowd really liked Owens when he was mocking Enzo. Enzo & Cass got a great reaction for their pre-match promo where they talked about New York, Sinatra, and lyrics from “Empire State of Mind”.

Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan & Mick Foley came out together. Foley asked how Brock is going to win and how Smackdown will have good matches. Jon Stewart came in, ran down Stephanie and then Stephanie showed up. Stewart then started backing down and was all scared of Stephanie. The New Day then showed up and hugged Stewart. Stephanie said she was misunderstood and Shane kind of made fun of them.

CHARLOTTE def. SASHA BANKS TO WIN THE WWE WOMEN’S TITLE

Charlotte won the title back when she was caught in the Bank Statement, but Charlotte used her weight advantage to fall on top of Banks for the pin. Both worked really hard, but it appeared Banks may have been hurt early in the match when she was dropped by Charlotte in a bad landing. Banks seemed out of it for a short period and it was klunky.

The match got better and the crowd was more into this than anythig so far. But, this was nothing close to their Raw match. The highlight was Banks doing double knees off the middle rope to the floor, and Charlotte doing a middle rope splash mountain that Banks turned into a huracanrana.

Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson were backstage with A.J. Styles in their doctor’s outfits. Styles said they’re running Raw and he’s going to beat up John Cena. Finn Balor showed up, and they acknoweldged he was part of their group before. They tried to Too Sweet him and he walked out. They need to explain that for the fans who don’t know the background.

I-C CHAMPION THE MIZ def. APOLLO CREWS TO RETAIN

This felt rushed. They were going back and forth, but the ending came when Crews missed a charge as his head hit the post and Miz pinned him after a skull crushing finale. Crews did good athletic stuff but it never got heated. Maryse’s outfit was probably the best thing in the match.

AJ STYLES def. JOHN CENA

This was an incredible match. Both were trading near falls very early giving the impression it would be a short match but they ended up going 23 minutes. They did everthiung in their arsenal and the match ended up with super crowd reactions. Styles had a busted mouth. This blew away everything up to this point on the show.

All kinds of near falls, climaxing when Cena used an Attitude Adjustment off the middle rope, but Styles kicked out. Cena sat in the corner and acted shocked that Styles had kicked out of move after move…although Cena kicked out of the Styles clash and the forearm. Cena went for the Styles clash again but Styles turned it into the Styles Clash a second time, hitting the phenomenal forearm a second time for the pin.

Cena took off his armband and walked off after leaving. This felt like a guy taking time off as he saluted the fans as he left the ring.  He’s leaving to do the TV show most likely.

Jon Stewart came out, dressed up for the gig. He put over the Cena vs. Styles match and said it was magic. Referencing last year’s SummerSlam, he said he’s glad some idiot didn’t interfere by hitting someone with a chair. Nobody seemed to care. He had some real bad material. He said he was asked by The New Day to come out and talked about Big E being injured. He had a New Day T-shirt on and put on a unicorn horn. He said he’s joining The New Day and did the Big E entrance since Big E “isn’t here.”

LUKE GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON DEF. WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE NEW DAY (KOFI KINGSTON & XAVIER WOODS) BY DQ

As far as the match went, it was more a showcase for the finish. They did the magic killer on Woods when Stewart jumped in to save the title. Gallows & Anderson teased crotching Stewart on the post for a long time. He went to tuck in his shirt first. Right before he was going to do it, Big E ran in and suplexed Gallows overhead on the floor for the DQ.  He also drove Gallows into the barricade and then the New Day and Stewart celebrated.

WWE CHAMPION DEAN AMBROSE DEF. DOLPH ZIGGLER

Ambrose won the match clean when Ziggler was trying for an X-factor and Ambrose blocked it, hitting the Dirty Deeds for the pin. The match was okay, but definitely not anywhere close to what you’d expect. The crowd was dead which also didn’t help. You could really see they’ve beaten Ziggler down and nobody bought that he could win. Even when he did his superkick and his Zig Zag, there was only a light — at best — reaction as far as the kick out.

NATALYA & ALEXA BLISS & NIKKI BELLA def. NAOMI & CARMELLA & BECKY LYNCH

They did the Eva Marie ring entrance even though she’s not there. They said she’s suffering from exhaustion and illnesses and is taking a vacation in Europe. Match was okay, but there wasn’t much heat. Nikki was pushed as the star. Natlaya and Bliss knocked Lynch out of the ring and threw Naomi into the post. Carmella dropkicked Natalya and Bliss out of the ring and turned around into the forearm by Nikki, who then used the TKO — her new finisher.

Maria Menounos interviewed Rusev & Lana. She said a true husband will destroy any man who insults her husband. He said he would show that Reigns will be the joke.

FINN BALOR def. SETH ROLLINS TO WIN THE WWE UNIVERSAL TITLE

They claimed Balor was the first guy to ever win a world title in his first PPV match.  Well, Big Show immediately comes to mind.  Balor won with a couple of running dropicks and the Coup De Grace for the clean pin. Balor kicked out of the pedigree near the finish. Tons of near falls. This was real good, and it didn’t have a lot of heat early, but by the end, the crowd was with them and Rollins had a hell of a performance.

Fans were chanting “Delete, delete” and “This belt sucks” during the match, echoing online sentiment for the look of the Universal title.

They showed the Dolph Ziggler/Miz KFC commercial with Miz in a chicken outfit and Ziggler in a Col. Sanders mask and wig.

US CHAMPION RUSEV VS. ROMAN REIGNS WENT TO A NO-CONTEST

Rusev jumped him before the match, threw Reigns’ shoulder first into the steps and worked it over. They brawled in the timekeeper’s area.  eigns came back and “injured Rusev’s ribs”. He was selling big.  Reigns wouldn’t stop attacking until they got him away and then they announced no match. Reigns came back and gave him a running spear on the ramp, so definitely no match. There was a “We Want Slater” chant.

BROCK LESNAR def. RANDY ORTON by TKO

This was really unique at the finish. Lesnar was ground and pounding him and looked like he knocked Orton out with an elbow as Orton was bleeding all over the place. The idea was clearly to have Orton busted open like with John Cena in Lesnar’s return match, but Orton looked like he was knocked out.  The doctors came in, but Lesnar kept going back to attack Orton.

Some of this was clearly planned but I’m not sure if this was the planned finish. Orton was a bloody mess.

Lesnar continued to beat on him after the match with worked punches. Shane McMahon jumped in the ring and got F5’d. Paul Heyman was freaking out. It appeared the idea was to be graphic and violent and look like a shoot, but it didn’t look like it was the planned finish of the match, although the Shane spot was clearly planned.

We’ll discuss this more on tonight’s Wrestling Observer Radio.
