Saturday Update

WWE

  • Sports TV Ratings reports that last night’s SmackDown averaged 1.182 million viewers in the fast national ratings, which would be the best viewership for any SmackDown episode that has aired on FS1. The show was moved to FS1 last night due to women’s World Cup soccer being on Fox: “Am told in the preliminary fast nationals WWE Smackdown on FS1 (due to World Cup) averaged 1.182 million viewers on FS1. That’s up 31% vs. last FS1 episode. 448K for adults 18-49, up 37% vs. last FS1 episode”
  • With SmackDown taking place in Orlando, several NXT wrestlers made brief cameo appearances. Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams, Tiffany Stratton, Wes Lee & Dragon Lee, The Creed Brothers, and Tony D’Angelo & Stacks were all on the show. Shawn Michaels appeared as well, giving his approval for Dominik Mysterio to defend the NXT North American title against Butch last night.
  • WWE uploaded a post-SmackDown video where Rey Mysterio met up with Dragon Lee. Rey said he wants to be there when Dragon Lee fights against Dominik and wins the North American title.
  • WWE NIL program signees the Cavinder twins attended SmackDown and were shown in the crowd.
  • During an interview with The Messenger, Alexa Bliss spoke about how time away from WWE programming can be good for her character:
          • Time away is always a good thing. When it comes to WWE, time away and reinventing a character and evolving yourself is the key to career longevity at WWE. So I always say, ‘Time away is such a good thing because it gives people the time to miss you.’
          • When you’re being seen on WWE three or four times an episode, you don’t really have anywhere to go with your character. So whenever you take time off, it’s always a good time to evolve and to keep going. And I’ve already been probably six or seven different versions of myself. And each time it’s done well with merchandise sales, with bookings and all that stuff. So I don’t really like to go backwards with my work. I always like to go forward.
  • Bliss also discussed her plans to return to the ring after she gives birth: “I probably won’t bounce back as fast as I hope. I’m going to get to working out and doing all that stuff and get to where I need to be, you know, to have time. [I’ll have] the first fundamental months with the baby before thinking about trying to rush back to work.”
  • The LWO, IYO SKY & Bayley, and The OC appeared on The SmackDown LowDown.
  • Contralona interviewed Gunther.
  • WWE has a two-hour Playlist video on the rise of Jey Uso.
  • Today is Shawn Michaels’ 58th birthday. Akira Tozawa (38) is also celebrating a birthday today.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Will Ospreay praised Athena vs. Willow Nightingale from ROH Death Before Dishonor: “Willow Vs Athena match was one of the best Women’s matches I’ve seen American PPV/TV in recent memory. Proper epic main event aye. Loved it”
  • Claudio Castagnoli spoke to Sports Illustrated about Wheeler Yuta working through a hamstring injury at Blood & Guts: “A lot of people pay good money to see us live. I’ll never give them less than 100% every single time I step through that curtain. That’s why I respect the BCC so much. Wheeler won’t say this, but he had a very hurt hamstring. He couldn’t run, but you couldn’t tell that during the match. Mox is energy and pure joy despite the pain, and it was inspiring to see Bryan [Danielson] working 10 minutes with a broken arm at Forbidden Door. Those are the people I want to surround myself with.”
  • On Busted Open Radio, Daniel Garcia discussed his character development in AEW/ROH: “Oh, it’s been great (his character development). I feel like when I came into AEW, I feel like I was typecast a lot just as a technical wrestler and a lot of times, technical wrestlers get typecast as boring and I feel like being with (Chris) Jericho and being able to stay in the Jericho Appreciation Society has really allowed me to show more levels and layers to my character and what I can do as a performer so I’m really grateful for that.”
  • QT Marshall, Harley Cameron, and Aaron Solo were guests on Talk is Jericho.
  • Shop AEW released a new “Double Clothesline” T-shirt for MJF.
  • The Under the Ring podcast has an interview with Eric Young.

Friday Update

For this weekend, Garrett and I did a show today talking about the news of the week and some history. Bryan and I will be back Sunday covering all the weekend stuff.

There is a giant news story coming from CNBC about Disney CEO Bob Iger attempting to make deals to give the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball minority owner stakes in ESPN. The idea to me seems to be that ESPN wants to get out of the spiraling rights games by offering the key content producers points in the company with the assurance that they will stay on ESPN. As we constantly talk about, the television business is rapidly changing and as more and more people no longer get cable, and cable carriage fees and advertising declines with them, the stations will no longer have the money to pay as much for programming. This spells potential disaster for every sport, as well as WWE, AEW and UFC, in attempts to continually get more money each negotiation period. The bottom hasn’t fallen out yet, and may not, but it feels to me this is the most dangerous challenge to this system that has served sports so well and made WWE and UFC into giant companies.

For those wanting to see the Kento Miyahara vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima match that was talked about in the new issue and will probably finish high in match of the year voting, you can get a free week at Wrestle Universe and watch it with English commentary at https://www.wrestle-universe.com/en

Smackdown is tonight in Orlando, which is sold out with more than 12,100 tickets out this morning. Remember the show is on FS 1 and not FOX tonight due to Women’s World Cup soccer. If you watch via DVR, adjust it quickly because in most cases, your FOX season pass will not record the show. There will be angles set up for the Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso SummerSlam main event with the stips, as well as for the Asuka title match (which has already been announced as a three-way with Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair) plus Rey Mysterio vs. Sheamus vs. LA Knight vs. Cameron Grimes in a match where the winner faces Santos Escobar next Friday. The winners of that will get a U.S. title match with Austin Theory. Dominik Mysterio vs. Butch for the North American title is also scheduled.

The Austin Theory U.S. title match was as of earlier this week scheduled for Smackdown and not for SummerSlam, which is already full with nine matches. That could always change but it was confirmed to us that was the original plan for the tournament.

Big E is at the building tonight for Smackdown backstage. Bayley is also there but not scheduled for a match.

UFC announced Leon Edwards defending the welterweight title against Colby Covington for the semi on the 11/11 30th anniversary show at Madison Square Garden. That’s the show headlined by Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title.

Rampage tonight on TNT at 10 p.m. has a 20 man Royal Rampage match with the winner facing Luchasaurus at All Out for the TNT title, plus Kris Statlander vs. Marina Shafir for the TBS title and Billy Gunn & The Acclaimed vs. QT Marshall & Johnny TV & Aaron Solo. They will also be announcing tomorrow night’s Collision show tonight on the air.

Tonight at Arena Mexico will have Cibernetico main event with Mistico, Metalik, Rocky Romero, Volador Jr., Templario, Titan, Mascara Dorada 2.0 and Dragon Rojo Jr. On paper, this should be something. Arena Mexico as far as big crowds and big reactions, on Friday nights, ism the closest thing to old-school wrestling in atmosphere pretty much anywhere.

UFC tomorrow from the O2 Arena in London on ESPN+ from Noon to 7 p.m. Eastern:

  • Jafel Filho (126) vs. Daniel Barez (125)
  • Shauna Bannon (115) vs. Bruna Brasil (115)
  • Yanai Ashmouz (155) vs. Chris Duncan (156)
  • Ketlen Vieira (135) vs. Pannie Kianzad (136)
  • Makmud Muradov (186) vs. Bryan Barbarena (185)
  • Mark Parkin (264) vs. Jaal Pogues (266)
  • Marc Diakiese (156) vs. Joel Alvarez (156)
  • Danny Roberts (171) vs. Jonny Parsons (171)
  • Davey Grant (136) vs. Daniel Marcos (136)
  • Lerone Murphy (146) vs. Josh Culibao (146)
  • Jai Herbert (155) vs. Fares Ziam (155)
  • Paul Craig (186) vs. Andre Muniz (185)
  • Nathaniel Wood (146) vs. Andre Fili (145)
  • Julija Stoliarenko (125) vs. Molly McCann (125)
  • Tom Aspinall (258) vs Marcin Tybura (246)

Tod Gordon did an interview with FOX News about his upcoming book on the history of ECW with the idea of saying that the WWE version of Paul Heyman version of his departure aren’t accurate.

We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s ROH PPV show, you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

We’re also looking for reports from these shows:

  • WWE Smackdown tonight in Orlando (dark matches only or anything not on television)
  • NXT tonight in Lakeland, FL
  • AEW tomorrow night in Newark, NJ (ROH tapings and dark matches only)
  • WWE Saturday night in Mexico City
  • NXT Saturday night in Gainesville, FL
  • WWE Sunday night in Monterrey, Mexico
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

There was a G-1 show today in Nagaoka. Lots of raves about actually most of the show. There is no show on Saturday and the C and D block run Sunday morning at 5 a.m. Eastern from Nagano which has Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Jeff Cobb, Aaron Henare vs Eddie Kingston and Tomohiro Ishii vs. Shingo Takagi, the latter of which is always one of the better matches of the year.

Michael Oku defending the British heavyweight title against Trent Seven, as expected from the angle at York Hall, has been added to the 8/26 RevPro show at the Copper Box Arena in London.

Pro Wrestling NOAH announced a record advance gate for its 9/17 Korakuen Hall show with Will Ospreay vs. Naomichi Marufuji as the main event.

SummerSlam odds at BetOnline:

  • Seth Rollins -300 Finn Balor +200

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE uploaded a post-show interview with Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley after Dominik defeated Wes Lee to win the NXT North American Championship last night.
  • Ripley tweeted a photo of Dominik pinning Lee: “Split second before greatness! Words cannot describe the feelings running through my body…. So bloody proud of you @DomMysterio35”
  • Finn Balor wrote about Dominik’s title win: “The proudest moment of my career. Congratulations @DomMysterio35”
  • TMZ Sports asked Seth Rollins if he thinks the Hollywood writers and actors strike could bring more interest to WWE:
          • I know it’s a difficult time for the actors and the writers. I believe they’re doing the right thing asking for what they deserve. I stand by them. But it is a fortunate part of not being part of a union that we’re able to still perform and, for our audiences and people who may not be familiar, now they get the opportunity to tune in and see what we’re all about.
  • Rollins said that he thinks WWE is in a boom period: “We’ve never been hotter. Business is the biggest it’s ever been. The talent across the board is the best it’s ever been. Business is hot right now. We’re in a boom, I think. When we look back on it, it’s going to be a special time.”
  • Denise Salcedo spoke with Cody Rhodes on the red carpet at the premiere of his Peacock documentary. The premiere took place in Atlanta last night. The documentary begins streaming on Peacock on Monday, July 31.
  • To sell the storyline injury from Brock Lesnar’s attack on Raw, Rhodes was wearing a cast on his arm at the documentary premiere.
  • Salcedo also interviewed Brandi Rhodes, Chelsea Green, Matt Cardona, Diamond Dallas Page, and Kevin Patrick.
  • ComicBook Nation has an interview with The Miz.
  • Tommaso Ciampa was the guest on this week’s episode of Out of Character.
  • Ciampa, Matt Riddle, and Shayna Baszler appeared on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Shark Week, which is the sponsor of tonight’s Dynamite, posted a video of the Blood & Guts cage being constructed.
  • In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Jon Moxley discussed how excited he is for Blood & Guts:
          • We’re going after the best, or at least the supposed best, in The Elite. The freaking company is named after them. Blood & Guts is our chance to plant our flag as the most dominant group in AEW.
          • I’m f—ing excited as all hell to bring something very unique—our version of Blood & Guts—to those fans and all the history of pro wrestling in Boston. I don’t know if anyone in The Elite has ever wrestled in the TD Garden before.
  • Samoa Joe told SEScoops about how he’s evolved as a performer:
          • I think the biggest thing is, is I’ve learned, I’ve definitely learned to enjoy it more, especially, you know, as your career progresses, because a lot of times, you get very, very caught up in the moment, it’s almost overwhelming. But as time goes on, as you begin to kind of understand the flow of the crowd, the flow of the people and stuff, you know, you do definitely enjoy what you do a lot more.
          • Aside from that, just having the ability to be able to work with young up and coming talent and to see them flourish and develop in the same ways that you did during your certain points in your career. It’s always cool to see that happen and be a part of that. It’s good energy, it’s good to see people becoming stars in their own right and it’s always fun to be there for the journey.
  • Booker T spoke about Zilla Fatu’s (the son of Umaga) debut match for Reality of Wrestling:
          • That was Zilla Fatu’s first match in front of a crowd, and you could tell he was very, very composed. He had that thing where we say in wrestling, if you feel like you’re going slow, move a little bit slower. He has that effect going on. His quickness and explosiveness was definitely there. You could feel his dad in the arena. I swear to god, you could feel his dad in the arena. I could see his dad sitting right there next to me. I could feel his presence in that arena on Saturday night, and I think Zilla felt a little bit of it as well.
  • Nick Aldis tweeted after headlining Slammiversary against Alex Shelley: “#Slammiversary was a fantastic ppv start to finish and I was honored to be in the main event. It was a huge challenge following all the great matches on the card, and I felt we offered something totally different and unique. The future of @IMPACTWRESTLING is in good hands.”
  • Kevin Kelly noted that he’ll be doing solo commentary for G1 Climax events that Chris Charlton can’t make: “I’m going to be flying solo on #G1CLIMAX33 events that Chris Charlton can’t make because of his schedule. With all block matches, that means everyone available to me has wrestled a #G1 match earlier that night. Not fair to them or you. Eddie Kingston will still be my guest on 8/9”
  • TJP and Aria Blake announced that they’re now married.
  • Britt Baker was a guest on Not Just Football with Pittsburgh Steelers player Cam Heyward.
  • 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Stick to Wrestling podcast interviewed Matt Taven.

Tuesday Update

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw. We will probably have time tonight for questions as well so you can send them to [email protected]

Raw tonight is from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta which is sold out with more than 11,400 tickets out as of this morning. The key things on the show are Brock Lesnar appearing to do an angle with Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. Dominik Mysterio & Damian Priest in a non-title match, Gunther vs. Matt Riddle with Giovanni Vinci and Ludvig Kaiser barred from ringside, Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez defending the women’s tag titles against Sonya Deville & Chelsea Green and Viking Raiders vs. Alpha Academy in a Viking rules match which is Viking oriented weapons at ringside. I don’t know this, but with the four guys in the non-title match not listed on the matches I’ve seen for SummerSlam, I could see this being set up or a title match either for that show or for television. Odyssey Jones, who worked a dark match on Friday night, is there so he may work on Main Event tonight.

We’re looking for reports on the show with Main Event matches and anything else not on the live show to [email protected]

Smackdown for Friday is also sold out in Orlando with 12,200 tickets out.

Francis Ngannou spoke to Ariel Helwani today on the MMA Hour about his match with Tyson Fury. He said they were in talks with a boxing match with Deontay Wilder, which would have been a terrible idea, and the Fury fight came about in the last five weeks. Helwani said Ngannou’s payoff will be above $8 million and Ngannou said it was more than he’s made in his entire UFC career combined. Ngannou said that if he wins (unlikely but it is a fight so anything is possible) there is an automatic rematch but if Fury wins, he’s not sure about that.

Josh Alexander, who was just cleared to return to action after surgery to repair a torn triceps, was announced a the new head trainer at the Can-Am Wrestling school in Windsor, ONT.

Ronda Rousey will be on Stars on Mars again tonight on FOX.

Wes Lee vs. Dominik Mysterio, Bronco Nima & Lucien Price vs. Scrypts & Axiom, Dragon Lee & Nathan Frazer vs. Humberto Carrillo & Angel Garza and Kiana James vs. Gigi Dolin will be on NXT tomorrow.

Yesterday’s TV was the final appearance of Nick Aldis with Impact. He had only agreed to a short run, which climaxed Saturday night with the PPV main event loss to Alex Shelley. He will be appearing in one last match on TV, either this Thursday or next week, against Eric Young. Mike Johnson reported Aldis was in talks with WWE for a producing job.

AEW Blood & Guts has done very strong business since the announcement of the match. They are at close to 8,200 tickets out for the Wednesday show at the TD Garden.

We’re looking for your thoughts on both nights of G-1, AAA TripleMania and Impact Slammiversay with a thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match for each show to [email protected]

Day three of G-1 starts at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow morning with A and B block matches

  • A: Kaito Kiyomiya vs. Chase Owens
  • B: KENTA vs. Great O’Khan
  • A: Hikuleo vs. Gabriel Kidd
  • B: Taichi vs. Tanga Loa
  • A: Yota Tsuji vs. Ren Narita
  • B: Will Ospreay vs. Yoshi-Hashi
  • A: Sanada vs. Shota Umino
  • B: Kazuchika Okada vs. El Phantasmo

Tony Khan will have a press conference tomorrow for the ROH PPV show which takes place on Friday night going against both Smackdown and Rampage.

We’ve had a lot of people comment to us about what an amazing weekend it was for high-quality matches. We also got recommended the Chihiro Hashimoto vs. Natsupoi match on the Sendai Girls show as a great David vs. Goliath type match.

We’ve gotten a lot of questions regarding the writers strike and how this affects wrestling. All the writers are non-union for WWE and AEW creative is as well. There is no effect on wrestling other than if the strike lasts any length of time, wrestling will become more valuable as first-run weekly programming. Nick Khan in the past has tried to push the idea of a simulcast of Raw on both NBC and USA like ABC and ESPN did for the UFC prelims on 7/8 and football and soccer has done of late. If this continues that is a stronger possibility than ever before.

Nick Hausman reported that a 9/14 show in Jerusalem, Israel that Sting and Rob Van Dam were to headline is in jeopardy. The statement made by the people putting the show together was:

“We regret to announce that the Global Pro Wrestling Summit event will not be going forward, as scheduled for the Pais Arena in Jerusalem on September 14, 2023. The promoter, All-Stars Israel/Stagetime, is in breach of contract on numerous fronts, inclusive of not delivering deposits to talent as stipulated in the contracts, and has been duly notified that the contracted talent (which includes ALL non-Israeli talent being advertised for the event) will NOT be appearing. THIS promoter has been advised to pull advertisements/promotions containing talent from all platforms and to cease selling tickets immediately in connection with the advertisement/promotion of any of these talents. In the interest of protecting consumers from fraud, we’ve notified both the Pais Arena and the on-sale platform –Ticket Tailor—that the event, as currently being advertised/promoted by All-Stars Israel/Stagetime, is not going forward. In the process of producing this event, first-class teams in both the US and Israel have been assembled. Talented professionals such as Rick Bassman. Scarlette Donovan, Todd Keneley, Alon Levin, Jeramie McPeek, Oren Treitman, Pete Trerice, Danny Ly Ziser, and others have put forth a consistently excellent and thoroughly conscientious effort to build and advance what we all hoped would be an unforgettable and wholly-positive experience, for talent and “office” alike, and especially, for the fans. That said, with this large volume of good work behind us, including booking an unparalleled card and having a solid commitment for pay-per-view, we’re all hard at work trying to “save” this event by aligning with a reputable, major promotional entity. Progress is being made, with REPUTABLE promoters, both in Israel and in other territories. In the event we are to move forward on the September 14 date, we will provide updates accordingly, and all ticket sales for Pais will be honored at the new venue. That said, fans who have purchased tickets thus far may wish to elect to request a refund through Ticket Tailor, the platform All-Stars Israel engaged. www.tickettailor.comIf September 14 does not come to fruition, we will regroup, and continue to put forth our best efforts to bring world-class professional wrestling to Israel in the very near future. But… we’re still fighting the good fight! In any case, we PLEDGE… a “new” event will be announced ONLY when ALL funding is in place. “

All In is being advertised in London on some double decker buses. WWE did the same thing last year for Clash at the Castle. (thanks to Ciaran and Stephen Lyon)

Dark Side of the Ring tomorrow is on Abdullah the Butcher.

The New Japan TV show on Thursday will be airing the 2016 G-1 Climax final with Kenny Omega vs. Hirooki Goto, which was a classic match at the time.

Fathom Events is presenting “They Live,” the 1988 film by John Carpenter and starring Roddy Piper in Piper’s most famous big screen lead role. It will air in selected theaters on 9/3 and 9/6.

Daniel Garcia will be headlining West Coast Pro as it debuts in Los Angeles on 9/10 at The Don Quixote.

Sunday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking all the latest news from a crazy day of wrestling withWrestling Observer Radio. Our weekend show with Garrett Gonzales and Larry Dallas covering the news of the week is back up on the site.

We have video related to the fan hitting Don Callis from behind and choking him after last night’s TripleMania show in Tijuana.

It started out as an angle where Kenny Omega was being interviewed and Don Callis came out and started making fun of him for losing so many matches of late, claiming five losses in a row. Didn’t he beat Wheeler Yuta? Konosuke Takeshita attacked Omega and then a fan was there and attacked Callis. It was brief, one of the videos you only see after it happened. Callis said a punch injured his ear, busted his mouth and his neck was injured and he never saw it coming. Konnan told Callis that the fan was a former security guard who did security for wrestling and concerts so was there because his friends were part of the security detail. He was not supposed to get involved and according to another source he also ripped his suit.

The past few days we had a lot of talk about Saturday being an unbelievable day for great matches. We’ll talk more about it later but people were raving about the FTR vs. Jay White & Juice Robinson match, which was one of the best matches ever on American television, as well a Kento Miyahara vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima on yesterday’s NOAH show, Will Ospreay vs. Taichi in the G-1 along with Shota Umino vs Ren Narita, and the Kenny Omega vs. Vikingo match in Mexico City. The amazing this is that because of travel situations, the four men in the tag match last night in Calgary had very little time to prepare for the match and then went out for 58:00 to do a three fall match. We’ll talk a lot more about it tonight as well as the other bouts that we get a chance to see.

Mayra Bueno Silva became a contender for the bantamweight title vacated by the retirement of Amanda Nunes yesterday in beating Holly Holm via second round choke in the main event of yesterday’s show. The talk seemed to be that Silva would face former champion Julianna Pena for the title, but that’s not official.

For Friday’s ROH show, the belief is that the new opponent for Claudio Castagnoli in the main event for the ROH title will be announced Wednesday. Tony Khan is doing a press conference on Tuesday so he may not have the main event but will have a few bouts. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Daniel Garcia for the Pure title was announced by Khan and Samoa Joe vs. Dalton Castle for the TV title is on based on last night’s tapings. Mike Bennett & Matt Taven may be facing Penta & Fenix for the tag titles and there was an angle with Stu Grayson and Evil Uno. The belief is that Athena will defend the women’s title against Willow Nightingale stemming from Nightingale’s win over Athena in the Owen Hart Cup tournament.

Regarding Jon Moxley’s winning a NAGA novice over-30 no gi BJJ tournament yesterday in Cincinnati, it was just a last minute thing he decided to do but said it was loads of fun.

We’re looking for reports on the WWE shows from the weekend, with dark matches from the Smackdown tapings Friday in Raleigh and reports from last night in Fairfax, VA and tonight in Salisbury, MD, as well as from the Impact tapings tonight in Windsor, ONT with results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

We’re also doing polls on these four weekend shows:

  • G-1 Saturday in Sapporo
  • Impact Slammiversary Saturday in Windsor, ONT
  • TripleMania Saturday night in Tijuana
  • G-1 today in Sapporo
  • We’re looking for a thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match to [email protected]

Arya Witner, our friend, who has written on this subject in the past, was very mad as were others, at the decision made by Highspots to book Rick Steiner at their convention in Detroit on 8/4 and 8/5. We’ll talk about that tonight but it’s obviously going to be a very controversial topic:

Public Incident, Private Apology? No Way.

by Arya Witner

In October 1992 two-sport athlete Deion Sanders attempted to make history by playing in a professional football game for the Atlanta Falcons in the afternoon and a professional baseball game for the Atlanta Braves in the evening. Since the Braves were in the middle of the National League Championship Series at the time, this was a point of contention with the baseball media, specifically Hall of Fame catcher and broadcaster Tim McCarver. McCarver publicly blasted Deion, calling him selfish for not devoting all his time to helping his team win the pennant. After the Braves won the NLCS in 7 games, Deion Sanders, who had heard about this from his Mom, responded by dumping four buckets of water on McCarver, who was reporting in the locker room that night.

In the aftermath on this incident, which is covered in the ESPN 30 For 30 Documentary “Deion’s Double Day”, McCarver said in an interview that due to the public nature of the incident he would not accept a private apology from Deion, stating that since the incident was public, it deserves a public apology. Deion never did and Tim passed away in February 2023.

In a story that was reported on, talked about and editorialized on at the time, in April 2023 at the WrestleCon convention Rick Steiner decided to let his transphobic side shine through and publicly lambasted and shamed Impact Wrestling’s Gisele Shaw for being a transgender woman, calling her “filth” and “a piece of trash”.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Rick Steiner was kicked out of the convention and was announced to be permanently banned from WrestleCon. Everyone had something to say about the incident, including me writing an article that was published both in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and AngryMarks that week. We all accepted that the incident was taken care of and moved on with our lives.

It turns out, like with most stipulations in wrestling, a permanent ban doesn’t really last long. Today, slightly more than three months after the original incident, WrestleCon announced that Rick Steiner would be a part of their next convention in Detroit over SummerSlam weekend.

Michael Bochicchio, the owner of WrestleCon, went to Twitter to defend this booking. Michael stated that Rick “immediately apologized” during a “private mediated event” with other Impact Wrestling staff which Gisele had refused to attend. Due to this private apology WrestleCon agreed to book Rick for this upcoming event, placing him on a “zero-tolerance scale” where Rick will be permanently banned if he does this again.

Maybe this time the permanent ban could last all the way until January.

Now there will undoubtedly be people who are like “Why are you making a big deal? He apologized!.” The fact is, much like with Tim McCarver and Deion Sanders, if you are going to publicly shame someone, then you need to follow that up with a public apology.

The fact is Rick Steiner has never said anything publicly regarding this incident. Nor has he even “released a statement” talking about regret.

While I do not represent the entire transgender community or the entire LGBT community, I can tell you from experience that if you say something incredibly stupid, we will normally accept your apology once, as long as you show actual contrition and show that you have learned your lesson and are making an effort to become better educated.

If he had done that, or if Gisele comes out and says he apologized to her and she forgives him, then I am more than happy to allow bygones be bygones and let everyone move on with their lives. Unfortunately, neither of those things have happened and WrestleCon has chosen to make whatever money you’re going to make with a Rick Steiner meet and greet in 2023 over making a stand and doing what was right.

Whether or not you agree with our existence, being transgender is not a fad, we’re not undergoing years of therapy and spending thousands of dollars in surgeries just because it’s cool or so we can win a swim meet vs cisgender women.

In a way it makes the aftermath of Jay Briscoe’s comments even crazier. As mentioned, Jay once said something really stupid. He immediately apologized and donated his pay to an LGBT charity. The response was Jay was never allowed to work for a major league company with US national television.

Meanwhile, let’s face facts, at some point Rick Steiner will be on WWE television again doing an angle with his son and by that point no one is going to care.

So, WrestleCon has made their choice and so have I and I choose to not patronize WrestleCon or spend my hard earned money at their sponsored events. Of course, I cannot force anyone else to follow along, but I know the transgender community would appreciate anyone’s support. Ultimately all this has done is make me, and people of my ilk, even more nervous to attend public events such as this.

Brandon Moreno got involved physically at TripleMania. He was coaching Team Baja California against Team Chilango. Even with the broken hand suffered last Saturday in his title loss to Alexandre Pantoja, he was shoved by Daga, and then responded with a spin kick, a jumping knee and then put Daga in an armbar before it was broken up.

Giulia will be defending her New Japan Strong Women’s title on 8/19 at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia . So she will be missing a Stardom PPV show which is scheduled on the same day.

Istela Nunes suffered a dislocated elbow on yesterday’s UFC show in Las Vega. She had just started the fight with Viktoriya Dudakova on Saturday when he posted on her left arm and it gave way, leading to a dislocation and a loss via stoppage in 34 seconds. It was her fourth straight loss as well, which puts her UFC status in jeopardy.

As far as Google searches go, UFC did not place in the listings this weekend. Nothing involving pro wrestling did this week. The only MMA related stuff was Tuesday when Tyson Fury was No. 7 related to his signed fight with Francis Ngannou and Mark Zuckerberg was No. 11 for the fight being talked about with Elon Musk.

The G-1 Climax tournament is back Tuesday in Yamagata with a 5:30 a.m. start, and then Wednesday in Sendai.

The new programming season of WWE events on A&E on Sundays is over, but they are replaying the Rivals episodes of Rock vs. Cena at 8 p.m. and Hogan vs. Andre at 11 p.m.

Impact tapings tonight in Windsor, ONT has Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster vs. Chris Bey & Ace Austin for the tag titles, Santino Marella vs. Dirty Dango, Lio Rush vs. Kushida and Tommy Dreamer & Darren McCarty vs. Champagne Singh & Shera.

Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. Dominik Mysterio & Damien Priest has been added to tomorrow’s Raw show.

The 9/25 Raw show in Ontario, CA, basically sold out on the first day tickets were put on sale to the public. It was almost sold out after the presale.

There was an Ali vs. Inoki TV documentary that aired in Japan last week. Josh Gross, who wrote the book about the event, was one of the people interviewed along with Bob Arum, Gene Kilory and they talked mostly about stuff in the Gross book. Hisashi Shinma, Inoki’s manager, Yoshiaki Fujiwara and Seiji Sakaguchi were also interviewed for the documentary.

Other Notes

The Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup will be 7/22 at the RJ Meyer Arena in Joppa, MD. There will also be a show on 7/23 and a Fan Fest on 7/23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the building.

Shane Heimberger on 9/9 in Fairplay, MD is doing a fundraiser for his old neighborhood fire department. There is a 1 p.m. meet and greet with Ricky Morton, Tony Atlas, Shane Douglas, and Godfather. If you mention the Observer you can get $5 off tickets if you send by midnight Sunday to [email protected]

Teddy Hart returned to wrestling Friday night at Team Vision Dojo Hart replaced Bella Snow who caught COVID wrestling in Puerto Rico.

Artemis Spencer & Randy Myers were the opponents of Malakai Black & Brody King on last night’s Collision show in Calgary.

Saturday Update

WWE

  • SmackDown averaged 2.16 million viewers in the fast national ratings last night, down from the 2.38 million last week’s Trial of Roman Reigns episode drew in the fast nationals. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.54.
  • On SmackDown, Michael Cole gave a storyline update on Jimmy Uso after Jimmy was demolished by Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa last week. It was said that Jimmy will be out of action “for the foreseeable future” due to suffering ruptured rib cartilage in the attack.
  • Montez Ford told USA Today about wanting a singles run in WWE: “As a kid, I’ve always had a dream to become WWE champion, and you can’t do that as a tag team wrestler. You can be a part of a tag team, but it’s just me out there. That’s always been a dream of mine, and that’s one of the things I’m always looking forward to, training for.”
  • USA Today asked Seth Rollins about potentially defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Cody Rhodes: “I would love for Cody Rhodes [to] come try to take it from me. If he can survive Brock Lesnar, I would love for him to try to. I’m better than I’ve ever been; he don’t stand a chance.”
  • A special WWE episode of the Weakest Link will air on NBC at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Monday night. Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins, The New Day, Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss, and The Miz are appearing on the show.
  • Pretty Deadly, Asuka, and The LWO appeared on The SmackDown LowDown.
  • Sportskeeda interviewed Shawn Michaels.
  • Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster and former MLB player John Kruk was a guest on WWE After the Bell.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Ahead of competing in his first G1 Climax, Eddie Kingston was interviewed by NJPW’s website. Kingston was asked if he ever felt like his goal of wrestling for NJPW wouldn’t happen:
          • Yeah. I felt like my career was over right before the pandemic. When the pandemic hit, I thought ‘OK, that’s it, my career’s over.’ I’m… I’m not supposed to be here. I’ll get emotional saying this, but I’ve dreamed of this since I was 13 years old. (teary eyed) I’ve made a lot of mistakes. In life, not just in wrestling, and I never thought I’d be here. To be here now seems very surreal, so I just want to do good for the Japanese fans, for New Japan, and for the people I looked up to, for Hashimoto, Chono, Muto, Baba, Inoki, the Four Pillars and on and on. Jun Akiyama as well- I’ve been able to wrestle and team with him, and he gave me so much confidence.
  • Kingston explained the lasting impression that he wants Japanese fans to have of him:
          • The last thing I’d like to leave for them is that I never quit, I never stopped and I always brung it, no matter how I felt physically, mentally, emotionally- and I’m an emotional guy- I always kept fighting. I keep saying it, but I was born to fight. I’m American, but my father’s side of the family is Irish, and they were hard men. My Puerto Rican side- all females, but hard females, man. I was brought up to fight.
  • NJPW’s website also spoke with Tetsuya Naito.
  • QT Marshall told SEScoops that RJ City helps write AEW’s QTV segments: “When we do QTV, we have someone who helps us write the stuff, RJ City. Of course, I’m the leader. At the same time, I wanted to let the [group] show character. The more outrageous, the better. It’s giving the talent hopefully an outlet to present themselves.”
  • Tomohiro Ishii will face Luke Jacobs at Revolution Pro Wrestling’s 11 Year Anniversary Show in London on Saturday, August 26.
  • Impact Wrestling uploaded a video previewing tonight’s Slammiversary PPV.
  • Mike Bennett appeared on AEW Unrestricted this week.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE.com posted a tribute to Mike “Mantaur” Halac following his passing:
          • WWE is saddened to learn that Mike Halac, better known to WWE fans as Mantaur, has passed away.
          • Halac’s combination of size and charisma immediately captivated fans worldwide as he took to the ring in a giant bull head to highlight his half-man, half-minotaur persona.
          • Halac spent time in both WWE and ECW where he faced some of the biggest stars of his generation like Bam Bam Bigelow, Razor Ramon, and Bret Hart.
          • WWE extends its condolences to Mike Halac’s family, friends and fans.
  • WWE broadcaster Megan Morant is donating a kidney to help save the life of her former boss’ wife. She wrote on Instagram yesterday:
          • I’m still not really sure where to start with this post, but here’s my best try:
          • Tomorrow I am donating my kidney.
          • I’m sure you have lots of questions so here goes nothing: You see, back in November I learned that my friend @mstevenk needed a kidney. After chatting with him about kidney transplants at work, I was intrigued. I rushed home and spent the entire weekend reading kidney.org before telling Kirsh that I would gladly test for him. A few blood tests later, and I got a call that Kirsh and I were not a match.
          • Instantly, I felt very sad. I wanted to help, but couldn’t. So I made a promise to myself: if the opportunity to donate a kidney ever comes up again in my life, I’ll do it.
          • About a week later, on a group chat with my old work pals at the @patriots I learned that my previous boss’ wife was in kidney failure. It all felt meant to be. After 5 months of testing, and a few more months of waiting, the day has finally come. While Margrette and I also are not a blood type match, through the National Kidney Registry’s joint donor program, I will advance donate tomorrow and in return, Margrette will get a kidney to save her life.
          • Throughout this whole process, Margrette has been an absolute rockstar. She remains extremely positive through her daily dialysis and continues to work in the nonprofit space to make life better for others all while enduring the pain and discomfort that is kidney failure. I feel so blessed to be in a position to help Margrette and her family. It’s truly the honor of my life, and it reminds me why we are all here: to help and be there for each other. While I’ve had my strong/brave girl face on this entire process, I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little nervous, so If you’re a person that prays, please keep us in your prayers tomorrow. I ’ll see you all on the other side! We’ve got our green nails on and we are ready to go! #DonateLife #kidneydonor #kidney
  • Morant posted an update after the operation: “Everything went perfectly! I’m overwhelmed with gratitude and cannot thank you all enough for the prayers. I’m eternally grateful! We did it”
  • Last Friday’s SmackDown ranked as the number one entertainment show of the week in the 18-49 demo: “For ratings purposes, WWE SmackDown was recategorized as an entertainment program beginning last week. In its first airing as such, SmackDown was the #1 entertainment show of the week among Adults 18-49 (0.76 rtg/986k viewers [in the demo]).”
  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions is involved in the making of a new documentary on Andy Kaufman. The project is from documentarian Clay Tweel and is being produced by Campfire Studios, Seven Bucks Productions, Worldwide Pants Incorporated, and Fifth Season. The documentary is in partnership with The Andy Kaufman Estate.
  • NXT’s Amari Miller posted a tweet about the importance of getting help with mental health when you need it: “During my depression stage, not knowing why I was changing, gaining weight, not getting along with people, trying to survive day by day. It is ok to ask for help!! Mental hospitals are not a sign of weakness!! I got the help I needed and I’m back healthy and happy inside &out”
  • Grayson Waller, Chelsea Green, Sonya Deville, and Johnny Knoxville appeared on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
  • Matt Riddle, Shayna Baszler, and Tommaso Ciampa will be on The Bump next Wednesday.
  • Brock Lesnar turns 46 years old today, Sami Zayn turns 39, and Shane “Hurricane” Helms turns 49.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • GCW clarified that, while he’ll be appearing at the show, Jeff Hardy won’t be wrestling at their Friday, August 4 event in Detroit. It will be the first time Hardy has ever appeared for GCW.
  • In an interview with the Daily Mail, Matt Hardy discussed the best moments he’s had in AEW so far:
          • When I think about my greatest moments of AEW, I’m still really proud of that street fight we had where I ran over [Sammy Guevara], and me in the golf cart. That was a lot of fun with myself and Kenny Omega, Sammy and Jericho.
          • The Stadium Stampede was a great thing. I really love the match with myself and Jeff and The Young Bucks at Double or Nothing a year ago, and then I enjoyed the Hardy Family Office. Especially when it was myself Isaiah and Marq Quen, and I feel like if was able to stay contained to the three of us, I think it would have been even better.
          • But then it kind of got to that point where there were some guys that just they said, Hey, can we put them with you, Matt? You know a little bit of a rub, and you can come talk for him, whatever, and we ended up doing that. I think that watered it down a little bit.
          • It’s going to be very funny once this contract stuff is done with Ethan, which we’re getting very close to the end game here, but I’ll make sure to make a comment about it because I’m never going to be in a contract story again at all, because I’ve done my fair share.
  • Britt Baker is featured on the cover of PennStater magazine.
  • Impact Wrestling has announced Lio Rush vs. KUSHIDA and Chris Bey & Ace Austin vs. Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster for this Sunday’s Slammiversary fallout TV tapings. The tapings are also set to feature Tommy Dreamer & former NHL player Darren McCarty vs. Champagne Singh & Shera.
  • Chris Sabin spoke to Sports Illustrated about holding the X-Division title 19 years after his first reign: “I always thought the X Division was the future of wrestling. Now I get to show that with a new generation of wrestlers. This is a chance for a lot of the new guys to get a chance. And I can prove I can still hang with these younger guys, too.”
  • MLW Fury Road 2023 will take place at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia on Sunday, September 3. The show is airing live on Fite+.

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio covering Raw, Smackdown and all the latest news in pro wrestling and MMA.

The Smackdown rating on Friday of 2,561,000 viewers and 0.76 in 18-49 could be a first time in history. The ratings for Saturday and Sunday won’t be in until tomorrow, but from Monday through Friday, Smackdown’s 0.76 ranked first for the week on network television. As far as I know, there has never been a week where a pro wrestling show was first of the week on network television. Last week came from close to being the first. But never in the early 50s (when wrestling was top ten in network prime time for a season) do we know of a time when that happened, and it never happened in the Hogan era or the Austin era.

The second quarter of the show did 3,070,000 viewers and an 0.94 in 18-49, which was the Bloodline segment after the commercial break. I thought the segment was an all-time classic. The performances from all involved were great and they set up a ton for the future as well. While not officially announced, as we’ve reported, Reigns vs. Jey is the scheduled SummerSlam main event.

Very sad news to report the death of Edward Garea, a name some of you would know, but if you read newsletters or wrestling magazines in the 80s and 90s, you would know him as “The Phantom of the Ring.” Garea was a historian of both pro wrestling and movies, and a longtime fan in the Northeast who regularly attended shows in Madison Square Garden and other venues. He was the key person in making Wrestling Eye the first wrestling magazine to treat pro wrestling as if it was predetermined and not real, which was a very ballsy decision and incredibly controversial at the time. He was also a regular part of the Wrestling Perspective newsletter and for years was a close friend of mine. His health had declined in recent years but he was doing well just a few weeks ago before being diagnosed with a rare and inoperable form of cancer and passed away Thursday.

Raw tonight is from Buffalo, NY. Scheduled for tonight is a face-to-face with Logan Paul and Ricochet to build up a planned SummerSlam match, Tommaso Ciampa vs. Miz no DQ, Drew McIntyre returns to the ring to team with Matt Riddle against two members of Imperium, The Alpha Academy have a graduation ceremony for Maxxine and Zoey Stark vs. Becky Lynch. There were 9,200 tickets out as of earlier today. It won’t be a sellout but it is up 40 percent from the December Smackdown show in the same building and Friday is an easier sell than Monday, so just another example how how much more interest there is in paying for the product even over seven months ago.

We’re looking for reports from the show, with Main Event results, anything dark or off camera or other live notes from the show to [email protected]

There were reports today that Lynch vs. Stark was off. The only thing we were told is that the story reported of Lynch being injured was accurate, but she was cleared over the weekend. We were not told specifically the match is back on, but when asked we were told she has been cleared.

AEW sent out a release today listing that with live plus first three days of DVR viewing, that Wednesday’s show did 438,000 in 18-49 which is an actual .75 rating. It would be a .34 the way 18-49 numbers have been looked at but TNT and TBS figure their numbers based on the 18-49s who actually have access to the station. The audience gained to nearly 1 million viewers after the first three days.

It’s been confirmed that even though he was injured (broken hand) and lost his flyweight title on Saturday night, Brandon Moreno will be at TripleMania Saturday in Tijuana as the coach of the Baja California team. The Monterrey team coach will be rapper Azesino, who is very famous in Mexico.

The Shad Khan family had to put down their 15-year old bulldog today. Best wishes to them as that is always one of the saddest days you’ll have.

Ronda Rousey continues on the Stars on Mars show on FOX tonight.

Don King will be appearing more on MLW at least in taped promos as the head of the Bomaye Fight Club going forward. King was revealed over the weekend as the storyline secret backer of the group. MLW got more pub than anything since lawsuit news over this one. King is backing Alex Kane, who is the new MLW champion.

The Adrian Adonis episode of Dark Side of the Ring airs tomorrow night on VICE at 10 p.m. A lot of the 80s WWF stars are on the episode and I was on it talking about what a phenomenal worker Adonis was before he had his weight issues. From 8-10 p.m. they will have a Dark Side of the 90s episode on the beginning of the UFC. I don’t know if this is the same piece but I saw a piece similar to this and it was very interesting watching in hindsight.

For Wednesday’s Dynamite in Saskatoon, tickets were marked down 25 percent suing the code SUMMER and tickets distributed as of this morning were nearly 3,000. It’s not a big number, but it was a good increase in the past few days.

NXT tomorrow will have Judgment Day as special guests, plus Ilja Dragunov vs. Bron Breakker with the winner facing Carmelo Hayes on 7/30, plus Joe Coffey vs. Stacks Lorenzo and if Stacks wins, he and Tony D’Angelo get a tag title shot at Gallus, but if Coffey wins, D’Angelo stays in jail (yes, a man’s fate in jail is determined as a wrestling match stipulation which ranks up there with Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett doing matches for child custody), Tiffany Stratton vs. Ivy Nile non-title, Charlie Dempsey & Drew Gulak vs. Duke Hudson & Andre Chase and the debut of Bronco Nima & Lucien Price, who at least over the weekend were working as heels.

As many have noted, today is the 35th anniversary of Jim Crockett’s first PPV show with national clearance, the Great American Bash from Baltimore where Lex Luger had Ric Flair up in the torture rack and seemingly had the NWA title won then the athletic commission stopped it because Luger was bleeding. Maryland had a no blood rule but Luger did blade. It was widely panned for a bad finish, particularly since Luger wasn’t bleeding much and this was a period when blood was used a lot in Crockett promotions. People were furious, but the Flair-Luger houses shows drew very well coming off the finish.

Sunday Update

We did our weekend show last night with Garrett Gonzales talking the news of the week, Collision, Smackdown, and had Ryan Frederick on to talk last night’s UFC show, which was a very noteworthy show. Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night talking Raw as well as all the news of the week.

Sen. Charles Schumer called on the FDA to investigate PRIME Energy drink, the drink that Logan Paul backs and has been pushed on WWE broadcasts as part of its deal with Paul and a sponsorship deal. The story said PRIME has been a big hit over the past year due to the promotion of Paul and KSI. The issue is that PRIME has 200 mg of caffeine in a 12 ounce can, or equivalent to six Coke cans or two Red Bulls. Some doctors have warned of health impact especially with young children. PRIME has said that they clearly label the drink as not recommended for children under 18 and that for kids they recommend PRIME Hydration, which has no caffeine at all. Schumer said that both drinks are marketed similarly so many parents believe they were getting some juice but in reality that are buying kids heavy caffeine.

In Google searches, last night’s UFC show was first for the entire weekend with 500,000. Nothing else involving MMA, boxing or pro wrestling cracked the top 20 any day this past week.

Dan Hooker’s right wrist was broken during his fight with Jalin Turner on the UFC show last night. He still came back to win rounds two and three and take the fight.

Regarding the two main card split decisions, in my opinion the right person won each time and the dissenting scorecards were bad. Ben Cartlidge, who is usually a good judge, gave Alexander Pantoja only round one against Brandon Moreno. My thought was Pantoja clearly won rounds one, three and five, and four was very close. Judge Derek Clearly gave Pantoja rounds one, three and five. Judge Junichiro Kamijo also gave Pantoja one, three and rive. Of media scores, , 57 percent gave Pantoja four of the five rounds and another 29 percent gave him three of the five rounds. 16 percent gave three of the five rounds to Moreno and nobody gave Moreno four rounds. It was a strong fight of the year candidate, nonstop exciting action and Moreno was the most popular fighter on the show and people were living and dying with every blow. Just a great crowd.

In Hooker vs. Turner, I thought it was very clear who won each round. Derek Cleary and Ron McCarthy had the same rounds two and three for Hooker, while Adelaide Byrd gave Turner rounds one and three and the decision. Media scores were 93 percent for Hooker and seven percent for Turner

As far as Israel Adesanya using the N word with an a at the end over and over on Dricus Du Plessis, who is a white South African, to build a probable middleweight title fight later this year, Dana White said, “Who gives a shit. I could care less. This is the fight business.”

Smackdown on 7/21 is scheduled for FS 1 as FOX will be airing a women’s World Cup soccer match that night. (thanks to David Wolf)

FTR vs. Jay White & Juice Robinson was one hell of a match last night They are doing a two of three fall rematch in Calgary on Saturday night with the tag titles at stake.

As far as other matches, heard a lot positive about today’s Will Ospreay vs. Leon Slater match from York Hall in London.

Wrestlenomics reported that the next Saudi Arabia show will be 11/4.

Dillon Danis, a much mocked Bellator fighter was backstage Friday night in Madison Square Garden. He posted a photo of himself with Paul Levesque and claimed “Negotiations.” Much of the top WWE brass was at the show.

Don King is involved in MLW storylines as the person behind the Bomaye fight club. The bomaye chant comes from the chant for Muhammad Ali in his Zaire fight with George Foreman, and Don King was the promoter of the fight. The story on how King got involved with MLW.

The final episode of the season of WWE’s Most Wanted Treasures, focusing on the Anoa’i and Fatu families, airs tonight on A&E at 9 p.m. Stone Cold Takes on America is at 10 p.m.

Wrestlers Trey Miguel and Ashley D’Amboise were engaged this weekend.

Gail Kim and Gisele Shaw were the first team eliminated in Amazing Race Canada on CTV.

There is an ROH PPV show in 12 days in Trenton, NJ. Right now the only match announced is Claudio Castagnoli vs. Mark Briscoe for the ROH title. They taped ROH TV last night and nothing was shot as far as angles other than Evil Uno vs. Stu Grayson.

After its PPV show last night, MLW announced its next PPV show would be 9/3 from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

Condolences to New Japan’s Fred Rosser, whose father passed away at the age of 98.

  • Michael Oku b Great O’Khan to win the British heavyweight title. This was O’Khan’s first loss ever in the U.K., which he’s been going to for years (thanks to Adam Cousins)

In potential next fights, Israel Adesanya is a -330 favorite to retain over Dricus Du Plessis and Alexander Volkanovski is listed at -240 for a potential featherweight title defense against Ilia Topuria.

Other Notes

Saturday Update

WWE

  • Last night’s SmackDown was the highest-grossing WWE event to ever take place at Madison Square Garden. It was also the highest-grossing domestic SmackDown in WWE history.
  • SmackDown averaged 2.38 million viewers in the fast national ratings last night, up from last week’s fast national average of 2.35 million. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.71 in the first hour and a 0.63 in the second.
  • Our Andrew Zarian tweeted that WWE will consider running a smaller stage setup for future MSG shows: “WWE will be considering running a much smaller stage set up in the future at MSG. It will depend on early ticket sales.”
  • LA Knight got a big reaction from the MSG crowd when he appeared during a pre-show segment with Hit Row.
  • Solo Sikoa reflected on the Bloodline Civil War from Money in the Bank:
          • Finally had some time to digest everything that happend last Saturday in London at #MITB. This will be a moment i will ALWAYS cherish and remember forever. To be in the ring with 3 of the very best in this business and better thing is we did it against eachother as family. I learned from all 3 of them since i started on the main and have taken every advice they have given me to be in this position. I have traveled the world with them and have main evented EVERY ppv with them and last Saturday we made history this night and main evented against eachother. So many emotions before and after. But i’m very thankful and happy i got to do it with family.
          • This was my wrestlemaina moment i will never forget.
  • The Daily Mail asked Bianca Belair if she feels more comfortable as a babyface on the main roster than she did when she was a heel in NXT:
          • It’s funny because in NXT with the Bianca Belair there I found my groove then and I loved it. But then when I came to Raw and SmackDown I felt like I found another groove that was inspiring to others and I saw how it was touching others and it wasn’t just me impacting people inside the ring, I was impacting people outside the ring and that’s what stuck with me.
          • I loved it and I still love it. So right now I feel like I’m a bit in between. I’m still in the groove I found when I got to main roster but there’s a little bit of the NXT Bianca Belair coming back. I feel like I’ve been playing by the rules, but then I’m seeing other people that aren’t and it’s like, wait a minute, hold up, let’s figure some things out.
  • Zelina Vega told Wrestlesphere that being part of the LWO has changed her life:
          • Stepping in with LWO has changed my life, not just my wrestling career, but just my life in general. My gosh, it’s a whole new form of person for me ‘cause I never thought I’d be a good guy, ever…it’s almost like pulling this whole new side out of me. And getting to train with Rey Mysterio is probably one of the things I never thought I’d be able to do. But, what an honor.
  • Noam Dar tweeted that he won’t be doing a Supernova Sessions segment on NXT this Tuesday: “I thought I could gather the strength to show my face in front of the NXT universe on Supernova Sessions this Tuesday, but I simply cannot without MY NXT Heritage Cup. I am lost without it. I’m not me right now. Therefore, SNS this Tuesday is CANCELLED.”
  • Inside the Ropes interviewed Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn.
  • Bianca Belair, Austin Theory, and Edge appeared on The SmackDown LowDown.
  • “Heels” star Stephen Amell will be attending the July 17 episode of Raw in Atlanta.
  • WWE uploaded a behind-the-scenes video from Money in the Bank.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • MJF posted a tweet claiming that he won’t be teaming with Adam Cole on Wednesday’s Dynamite: “Hey got some bad news. Was sooooooooo excited to wrestle Big Bill and Cage this week. Unfortunately I’ve come down with something and I’m violently ill. I wish my tag partner and close friend Adam all the best. Pray for me and my health. Love y’all”
  • Cole then responded to MJF: “Max…STFU. You’re coming to TV.”
  • MJF wrote back to Cole: “Guess it’s only cool when you get to do it. Ugh. Fine. You’re gonna wear the shirt though right?!?”
  • In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Timothy Thatcher discussed his AEW match against Bryan Danielson that took place this February: “AEW, that was literally out of the blue. It happened because Bryan Danielson wanted to wrestle me. For me, that was reason enough to fly from Tokyo to Dayton, Ohio for a day and back.”
  • Ahead of this year’s G1 Climax, Masahiro Chono passed the STF on to Shota Umino.
  • Umino addressed whether he’s a member of Blackpool Combat Club: “[Jon Moxley is] doing some incredible things in AEW right now, love or hate them. There were a lot of people asking me these few weeks if I was part of Blackpool Combat Club, and the answer is that I’m not. I said it all in my backstage comments in Osaka, but me and Mox, it’s something that’s deeper than a babyface and heel fan opinion.”
  • NJPW’s English-language website has an interview with SANADA. SANADA said appearing in AEW made him realize how important the IWGP label is: “I got to chat with CM Punk, and he was like ‘that belt is the coolest.’ You know, for a CM Punk to know who you are and what you’re doing, that speaks to how widely the IWGP Champion is known.”
  • Brian Cage was a guest on Busted Open Radio.
  • Beer City Bruiser spoke to Haus of Wrestling about his recent hip surgery:
          • The best way to describe it is everything in my right hip was completely dead. The bone, the labrum was gone, the cartilage was gone. My femoral head was actually being absorbed into my pelvis bone. The doctor had said I had bone spurs on the head of the femoral, which is normal for any type of breaks or stuff.
          • When he went in there, the reason it took the extra hour is because I had two particular bone spurs that were the size of his fist that were encapsulating the femoral head, and he had to take a chisel and chisel them out because they couldn’t move my leg to get the fake hip in. And he came out and told my wife, ‘I’m surprised the way that hip was when we went in there; I’m surprised he walked in here this morning.’

Friday Update

We won’t be having a show today but Garrett Gonzales and I will be back tomorrow night covering Collision, Smackdown, UFC 290 and all the news of the past week including all the Observer stories and business notes, and there is a lot of it.

The new Observer issue is up on the site now. We’ve already gotten a lot of great feedback on the Darren Drozdov story.

Ariel Helwani reported that Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou is expected to be announced shortly under boxing rules no doubt.

Smackdown tonight is from Madison Square Garden. The huge ratings run will likely continue tonight with the trial of Roman Reigns by the Usos, plus Edge returns in the Grayson Waller Effect, A.J. Styles faces Karrion Kross and Austin Theory defends the U.S. title against Sheamus. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor for the world title is scheduled as a dark match. Trick Williams was sent to the show, so he may be in a dark match or in an angle. Vince McMahon is at the show as he would be expected to be because he almost always goes to MSG events. About 13,500 are to be in attendance and it is sold out.

Georges St-Pierre, who will be doing a grappling match in December coming out of retirement, has said he would like to face Anderson Silva, Khabib Nurmagomedov or Kamaru Usman.

Bandido after surgery yesterday on his broken wrist is hopeful to be back in action in six to weight weeks. All In is 7 1/2 weeks and that is the hoped for goal if he would even be booked on the show.

Josiah Harrell, who was to face Jack Della Maddalena tomorrow on the UFC show, in his MRI was found with moyamoya syndrome, a rare disease that results in blocked arteries at the base of the brain according to Nolan King of MMA Kings. He will undergo a brain procedure and is obviously out of the fight. UFC confirmed that Della Maddalena will be off the card.

We’ve looking for reports from these weekend shows:

  • Smackdown tonight in Madison Square Garden (dark matches only)
  • NXT tonight in Largo, FL
  • NXT tomorrow night in Melbourne, FL
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights

Some more notes on the AEW ratings from Wednesday, which came out today. Dynamite’s 855,000 viewers and 0.29 was first place on cable, and also beat everything on at least English language television except The Price is Right from 8-9 p.m. on CBS in 18-49. It was second on television and an 0.29 on cable is more impressive than an 0.42 on network in hour one. In house two, it was tops on all of television. Sista Series on BET was second on cable at 0.18 and Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo was third at 0.17, followed by Expedition Unknown on Discovery at 0.16. The 35-49 numbers were way up but 18-34 was still at the same 0.19 as last week. The MJF/Adam Cole post-match was the 18-49 and 18-34 high point.

The G-1 Climax tournament starts a week from Saturday, which is also the day of the Kenny Omega vs. El Hijo del Vikingo match for AAA in Tijuana.

UFC 290 is tomorrow from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas:

  • We have a preview in the current issue. Turner missed weight by two pounds and has to forfeit 20 percent of his purse.

Dana White is claiming that 100 percent Mark Zuckerbeg and Elon Musk want to fight in UFC and he said he has a date planned for the fight. He said if a commission says no, he’ll find a commission who says yes and said the show will do one billion in revenue.

Becky Lynch & Seth Rollins and Montez Ford & Bianca Belair are being sent by WWE to the Espy Awards.

Best wishes to former pro wrestler Rick Allen, known as Sunny Beach on Northeast indies and the Herb Abrams UWF, who had heart surgery on Thursday. He worked many television matches for WWF as well.

The Impact shows this past week in Wagga Wagga, Australia will be airing later this month on Impact in 60.

MLW is doing a PPV show on FITE+ tomorrow night from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia with Alex Hammerstone vs. Alex Kane for the title as the main event.

Battery charges against former UFC fighter Luis Pena were dismissed, stemming from an October 2021 arrest. Pena was accused of striking two women, and injuring them, one of which was his partner who he allegedly struck several times with a cosed fist and another woman attempted to stop him and he allegedly punched her and knocked her down. UFC then released Pena from the promotion but has fought five times in smaller companies since.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • Josh Barnett responded to the NXT Underground match that aired last night: “Oh look, fake Bloodsport is back. Thank you for showing the world that this kind of thing has legs (we knew that already) and that even with 10x the money and production there is still only one Josh Barnett’s: Bloodsport. #NXTUnderground #Bloodsport #NXT”
  • During an interview with Inside the Ropes, Bayley was asked if she could follow in Mercedes Mone’s footsteps and wrestle in Japan: “I think what she’s doing is incredible, but I don’t know if I’d be able to do it. That Japanese style is intense. I’m a little too old for that. She can go ahead and do all that. She’s braver than I am. She’s way more athletic than I am. So she can do all that stuff, and I’ll support her the whole time. If something were to happen and I was able to go experience different things like that, we’ll see. But right now, my body will say no.”
  • Drew McIntyre, Damian Priest, and boxer Alycia Baumgardner were guests on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
  • McIntyre addressed his WWE status and apologized to fans for not being around recently: “I just want to apologize for everybody that I missed my dates, I missed the towns. You know, it’s not like me unless there’s a reason. Obviously, the rumor and innuendo is out there. What’s been going on with Drew McIntyre? What’s going on with the future? The future doesn’t matter. What matters is the present. And presently, Drew McIntyre is back. If you’re heading to a WWE show and Drew McIntyre’s there, you know you’re gonna get 110 percent. And finally, finally, finally I’m chasing that big moment with a title in front of live fans. So let’s make that happen finally.”
  • Santos Escobar told Haus of Wrestling that he’d love to have Konnan in the LWO: “I would love that. Konnan is a very important person in my life and in my career. If that ever happened, I would be really, really happy.”
  • Members of Britain’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Wrestling expressed support for John Cena’s call to bring WrestleMania to London. Co-chair Alex Davies-Jones said: “Whatever we can do to make the UK attractive to host wrestling on the world stage we are more than happy to help facilitate. We would use our contact and negotiating skills to try and reach out to WWE, making conversations happen to try and promote the UK as a premier destination for world-class wrestling.”
  • Ring announcer Mike Rome was interviewed on Out of Character.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • WrestleTix estimated yesterday that 74,888 tickets have been distributed for AEW All In at Wembley Stadium.
  • Wheeler Yuta spoke to Cageside Seats ahead of his match against Kenny Omega on Dynamite tonight. Yuta said he’s not feeling pressure with having to follow Omega and Will Ospreay’s match from Forbidden Door: “Honestly, I always just try to kind of do my own thing and focus on my own goals. Obviously, [following the Ospreay match] definitely adds to the excitement. It adds to the feel of it. Just like, how is Kenny gonna be able to bounce back after having such a classic match? So it definitely adds a whole ‘nother element to it, but I really just have to focus on doing the best that I can do… it definitely adds a little bit more in an air of excitement. I don’t think I’d say pressure. I’d say excitement for me.”
  • AEW star Adam Cole turns 34 years old today.
  • AEW revealed that Matt Menard & The Butcher will be Cole & MJF’s opponents in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament quarterfinals on tonight’s episode of Dynamite.
  • A trios match with The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn facing The Blade & The Bollywood Boyz has also been added to tonight’s Dynamite.
  • Renee Paquette made an appearance on Wilde On with Taylor Wilde.
  • AEW congratulated Eddie Kingston on winning the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship.
  • Due to a head wound that he suffered on night one, JR Kratos was pulled from NJPW Strong Independence Day night two. Kratos was scheduled to wrestle Oskar Leube on the show. Leube instead lost to Satoshi Kojima.
  • Tiara James vs. B3CCA has been added to this Saturday’s MLW Fusion TV tapings in Philadelphia.
