WWE touts new records set by Fastlane 2023

WWE issued a press release on Monday touting the success of Fastlane 2023.

The show, which took place in Indianapolis on Saturday, was the “most-watched and highest-grossing Fastlane” in company history. It was also the highest-grossing WWE event to ever take place in the city of Indianapolis.

This was the first Fastlane event since 2021. Viewership for the show was up 71 percent from that previous record. Fastlane 2021 was the first WWE pay-per-view to ever stream on Peacock.

“The sold-out show marked the largest gate ever for any Fastlane, up more than 31 percent versus the previous record set in Cleveland in 2016,” WWE wrote. “In addition, Fastlane sponsorship revenue was up 60 percent versus the previous record set in 2021.”

The main event of Saturday’s show saw Seth Rollins defeat Shinsuke Nakamura in a Last Man Standing match to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. There was also a tag team match with John Cena & LA Knight defeating The Bloodline’s Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa.

WWE’s next premium live event is Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, November 4.

WWE Fastlane review: Not brought to you by Pizza Hut

Seth Rollins is still the World Heavyweight Champion.

WWE Fastlane on Saturday ended with Seth Rollins barely hanging on to the World Heavyweight title in a Last Man Standing match that, thanks to his performance, was significantly better than their last match at WWE Payback back in September. Fastlane was a better show than Payback; it opened strongly and ended strongly. Not that anyone will remember this show a week from now, but it’s a defintely a thumbs-up show.

The main event started off slow, with Nakamura in control. Towards the end of his NJPW run, Nakamura had two modes – working his ass off or just kind of going with the vibes. A lot of his WWE run has been the latter, mainly working off of his immense charisma. He was fine here, but it was Rollins’ performance and selling towards the end that really made this match, easily the best match on the show.

Long-term, it seems inevitable that Damian Priest will cash in and defeat Seth Rollins. Announcers in fact questioned how long Rollins can go on this pace he’s going on, so something tells me the cash-in is sooner rather than later.

Fastlane only had four other matches and ended after a brisk three hours. WWE and AEW pay-per-views at this point are like night and day. Here’s the rundown:

  • The opening match had the unlikely team of Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles, besting The Judgment Day. This turned out to be a hot opener to kick off the show, by far the second best match overall. There was tons of interference towards the end, but it all told a story and the crowd was into it. Even better, it furthered the storyline with The Judgment Day by announcers pointing out everything started to falter once JD McDonagh’s interference backfired.
  • The LWO vs. Bobby Lashley/Street Profits match was all about Carlito making his return. People popped big for it. Carlito looked good for the one or two minutes he was in. Can’t call this a failure but the match itself was completely forgettable. Also boy howdy did WWE plug the hell out of Pizza Hut during this match. This show in fact felt like a huge commercial for Pizza Hut. Thanks Nick Khan!
  • Can you say that a match was good, but also kind of there at the same time? That was the women’s three-way on this show between IYO SKY, Asuka, and Charlotte Flair. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it also felt like every other three-way I’ve ever seen on WWE programming recently. There were no interesting ideas. Does every multi-person match need a tower of doom spot, or a spot where everyone falls to the floor after a big move? No, but you are going to see in a WWE match no matter what. The storyline of the match had IYO telling Bayley before the match not to interfere. So the end of the match had her do it anyway and it helped IYO retain the title. Everyone was happy after the match. Okay. It’s only a matter of time before Charlotte wins that title because THE RECORD MUST BE BROKEN, so do what you gotta do now I guess.
  • LA Knight got another big win, teaming with John Cena to defeat Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. This was not particularly interesting for a long stretch of time. It’s easy to see that at this stage of his career, Cena is just kinda there in terms of in-ring. By the end it picked up so I wouldn’t say this was a bad match, but probably a good thing this didn’t headline. Uso losing probably isn’t a great sign for him in the Bloodline, but I am not sure where we’re going with this storyline at this point, either. LA Knight winning seems to make me think he’s next for Roman Reigns, probably at Crown Jewel.

And that’s it! With Roman Reigns making his return after nearly a two month absence on this coming Friday’s SmackDown, we’ll likely get a bigger idea of what the direction will be in the next month as we slowly approach Royal Rumble season (and thus, WrestleMania season).

Triple H WWE Fastlane press conference: Jade Cargill debut, Edge departure

WWE’s chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque spoke to the media at a press conference following Saturday’s Fastlane pay-per-view.

Among the topics he discussed were Jade Cargill’s WWE debut, Edge’s WWE departure, the rise of LA Knight, the run that John Cena is on currently, plus business notes from Fastlane.

Among the highlights:

Triple H on when Jade Cargill can be expected to debut as a character —

“When she’s ready to blow the roof off of everything we do, right? There is one thing I am, it’s patient for stuff like this.”

“Her ability and her rise has been incredibly quick. This is a different system, this is a different level of everything. What doesn’t exist elsewhere, exists here. That opportunity for her to learn at a different level and get to a different place, that’s just the way it is.”

She’s ready for it all, she’s ready to dig in, she’s ready to work her ass off… But the thing you don’t want to do is you don’t want to put somebody in a position that they’re sort of ready for. You want to make sure they’re damn ready for it… No matter what happens, she’s gonna knock it out of the park. When is that? Not sure. Where is she gonna go? Not sure.”

“What a future.”

“I look forward to strapping the rocket on her.”

Triple H on Edge leaving WWE, signing with AEW —

“Time, right? The time was right for him, the time was right for us. I think he had an amazing career and an amazing sendoff here. I think he felt like he had done what there was to do, I think we sort of felt, ‘Yeah, I think you’re right,’ and I wish him the best.”

“I think he said it the other day, right? There’s no animosity here, there’s no hard feelings here. He’s doing what’s right for him and his family.”

“I’m happy for him. I’m very, very happy for him. I sent him that in a message, ‘I’m happy for [him] and proud of him, and happy for him.”

“If somebody feels like a different opportunity is better for them? Great, that’s wonderful. But the machine doesn’t stop for anyone.”

Triple H on the rise of LA Knight —

“Hard to imagine a year ago he was Max Dupri… We’re all pushing with him. We’re all pushing him up the hill too.”

Triple H on John Cena —

“I just want to say thank you to John. What he’s doing here, the run he’s doing, the moment that he’s givning people like LA Knight, that he’s giving people like Jimmy [Uso], Solo [Sikoa], there’s no experience like that in the world for them.”

“He doesn’t need to be here… You’re in different places in your life. To see John’s growth, but he always comes back to this. He doesn’t need to be here. He could be doing a lot of other things, maybe like resting or sleeping? I don’t know. He doesn’t seem to do either one of [those]. But he does it because he loves it.”

“He’s at an age, he’s doing a lot of other things. I would just say this to everybody out there: revel in it. I know I am. Because the appreciation level John should get is off the charts.”

“When he’s here, don’t criticize it, don’t overthink it, just enjoy it, because it won’t last forever.”

Triple H on WWE Fastlane business —

“Tonight is the highest-grossing event we’ve ever done in the city of Indianapolis. 14,529 loud, intense, crazy fans. We set gate records, we set sponsorship records here tonight.”

“We’re in one of the greatest runs in the history of this business right now.”

Pat McAfee makes surprise appearance at WWE Fastlane

With Fastlane taking place in Indianapolis, Pat McAfee made a surprise appearance at the show.

McAfee appeared prior to the tag team match between John Cena & LA Knight and The Bloodline (Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa). McAfee cut a promo, introduced Cena, and then joined Michael Cole and Corey Graves on commentary.

During his promo, McAfee praised the Indianapolis crowd and said he thinks Indianapolis deserves to host a WrestleMania.

Indianapolis is McAfee’s adopted hometown. He played for the Indianapolis Colts for the entirety of his NFL career.

McAfee also voiced the opening video for Fastlane.

McAfee traveled to Indianapolis after doing ESPN’s College GameDay earlier on Saturday. College GameDay was in Texas for the rivalry game between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners.

In September 2022, McAfee left his role as a full-time WWE commentator due to his College GameDay commitments. McAfee has remained part of WWE despite no longer doing weekly commentary.

McAfee also made a surprise appearance on WWE programming last month. He returned on SmackDown alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Carlito returns to WWE at Fastlane

Carlito is back in WWE.

The former Intercontinental, United States, and Tag Team Champion returned to the company at Saturday’s Fastlane event as the LWO’s mystery partner in a six-man tag team match against Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits.

Rey Mysterio & Santos Escobar of the LWO began the trios match with a two-on-three disadvantage, but Carlito made a late entrance for the bout and picked up the win for his team with a backstabber on Montez Ford.

WWE posted a link to new Carlito merchandise, typically a sign that of a contractual agreement.

PWInsider and Fightful are among outlets who have reported that Carlito has been signed to the company for some months and was awaiting creative plans for a debut.

Prior to Fastlane, Carlito’s last WWE appearance came at Backlash in May in Puerto Rico where he Savio Vega, and the LWO helped Bad Bunny secure a victory over Damian Priest.

Carlito was also a surprise entrant in the 2021 Royal Rumble, and worked a tag match on the ensuing Raw. The 44 year-old’s original main roster WWE run lasted from 2004 to 2010.

Jade Cargill makes first WWE appearance at Fastlane

Jade Cargill made her first appearance as a member of the WWE roster at Saturday’s Fastlane event.

Cargill, a free agent acquisition from AEW, made her debut in a backstage segment at the conclusion of the Fastlane pre-show on Saturday.

The former TBS Champion was shown arriving in a chauffeured SUV, exiting the vehicle, then shaking hands with WWE’s chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque as the two walked in the backstage area of the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

It was believed that Cargill’s main roster debut was imminent, with reports going back several weeks that “high priority, main roster” creative plans were being worked on for the former AEW star.

WWE announced Cargill’s signing to a multi-year deal with the company on September 26, with Cargill doing a mainstream media tour with outlets such as ESPN following her acquisition. Her signing was the first high-profile acquisition by WWE after it was acquired by Endeavor and merged with UFC as part of the TKO Group Holdings.

Cargill lost to Kris Statlander in her final AEW match which aired on the September 15 edition of Rampage in a TBS title rematch. Cargill held a 60-2 record in AEW competition, winning her first 60 matches in the company before dropping her last two to Statlander.

Video of Cargill’s debut segment is embedded below.

Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso win Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles at Fastlane

The unlikely duo of Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso are now tag team champions.

The Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles changed hands with Rhodes & Uso defeating Finn Balor & Damian Priest at Fastlane. A miscommunication between Priest and JD McDonagh led to Judgment Day losing the match.

McDonagh attempted to hit Rhodes with Priest’s Money in the Bank briefcase, but Rhodes moved out of the way and McDonagh accidentally struck Priest in the knee. Rhodes laid McDonagh out, then capitalized on the situation by giving Priest a Cross Rhodes onto the announce table.

Uso gave Balor a superkick and held him in position so Rhodes could hit a Cody Cutter. Rhodes followed that up with a Cross Rhodes before pinning Balor to win the match.

This is the first championship Rhodes has held since returning to WWE. For Jey, it’s the only title reign he’s ever had with someone other than his twin brother Jimmy.

In storyline, Rhodes brought Jey over to the Raw roster after Jey quit SmackDown. Jey quit after Jimmy cost him a match against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. At some point, SmackDown will be receiving “trade compensation” for losing Jey to Raw.

McDonagh, who is friends with Balor, has been trying to get a spot in The Judgment Day in recent months. Priest hasn’t wanted McDonagh to join the group.

Undisputed Tag Team title match added to WWE Fastlane

An Undisputed WWE Tag Team title match has been added to Saturday’s Fastlane event.

Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso will team together to challenge current champions Finn Balor and Damian Priest. The match was announced at the start of Monday’s Raw, when Rhea Ripley returned and mentioned that Rhodes & Uso were coming for the titles.

Rhodes at WWE Payback last month announced that Uso had jumped to Raw as part of a talent trade between Raw and SmackDown. Balor had attempted to recruit Uso as part of Judgment Day, but Uso rejected the offer. As a result, the Judgment Day have now been targeting Uso as well as Rhodes.

Here is the updated lineup for Saturday’s Fastlane:

  • Last man standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins defends against Shinsuke Nakamura
  • WWE Women’s Championship: IYO SKY defends against Asuka and Charlotte Flair
  • Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles: The Judgment Day defend against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso
  • John Cena & LA Knight vs. Solo Sikoa & Jimmy Uso
  • Rey Mysterio & The LWO vs. Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits

LA Knight set to team with John Cena at WWE Fastlane

LA Knight is all set to team with John Cena at WWE Fastlane.

The end of SmackDown saw Knight make the save for Cena, who was being assaulted two-on-one by Solo Sioka and Jimmy Uso. After laying out both Sioka and Uso, Knight signed the contract to team with Cena at Fastlane on October 7.

A show-long storyline saw Uso and Sikoa wreak havoc backstage in an effort to prevent others from teaming with Cena next weekend. The show last week had Cena originally planning to team with Styles, only for Styles to be laid out backstage by Sikoa and Uso, sending him out of the arena in an ambulance.

Also added to Fastlane is IYO SKY defending the WWE Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair and Asuka in a three-way match. Flair declared her intentions to challenge SKY prior to defeating Bayley on Friday’s show. After the win, Damage CTRL was set to target Charlotte when Asuka came out for the save. Bayley then accepted a three-way on behalf of SKY for Fastlane.

Rey Mysterio and the LWO will also challenge Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits. After Mysterio defeated Santos Escobar to retain the WWE United States title on Friday, the two were about to shake hands when The Street Profits and Bobby Lashley came out and assaulted the two, along with Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro when they attempted to make the save. Mysterio then issued the challenge to Lashley and The Street Profits backstage in the trainer’s room.

Here is the updated lineup for next Sunday’s Fastlane:

  • Last man standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins defends against Shinsuke Nakamura
  • WWE Women’s Championship: IYO SKY defends against Asuka and Charlotte Flair
  • John Cena & LA Knight vs. Solo Sikoa & Jimmy Uso
  • Rey Mysterio & The LWO vs. Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits

Seth Rollins accepts Shinsuke Nakamura’s challenge for WWE Fastlane

Seth Rollins has agreed to a to a Last Man Standing match at Fastlane against Shinsuke Nakamura.

On Raw Monday, Nakamura officially named the time and place for his World Heavyweight title match: Fastlane on October 7. Nakamura told Rollins that this would be a match so brutal that Rollins would never be able to walk again or even look at his daughter. Rollins accepted the challenge, setting the stage for their rematch.

Despite winning their match at Payback earlier this month, Rollins has been seeking to fight Nakamura again after Nakamura assaulted him following his victory. At one point, Rollins offered to defend the title on WWE Raw. However, Nakamura rejected the match offer, saying he’d face Rollins on his terms. In the weeks since, Nakamura has appeared in vignettes and has attacked Rollins from behind, avoiding Rollins face-to-face.

Here is the updated lineup for next month’s Payback:

  • Last man standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Seth Rollins defends against Shinsuke Nakamura
  • John Cena vs. Solo Sikoa & Jimmy Uso

John Cena tag team match booked for WWE Fastlane

John Cena has a tag match at Fastlane, but doesn’t have a partner.

By the end of Friday’s SmackDown, John Cena had signed a contract pitting himself against Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso. AJ Styles had originally agreed to team with Cena. However, Sikoa and Uso attacked Styles backstage prior to the contract signing, sending him out in an ambulance after Sikoa splashed Styles off a platform. Cena confronted both Sikoa and Uso in the ring after Styles’ assault, but was laid out by both men to end the show.

Cena opened SmackDown saying he wanted to wrestle, with Styles coming out saying if The Bloodline wanted some, they could get some. It eventually turned into a show-long storyline where official Adam Pearce looked to sign the tag match. Paul Heyman agreed to the match as long as it wouldn’t take place on Friday’s show. Uso said they’d sign the contract in the ring. Heyman didn’t seem pleased by Uso’s move, saying decisions like that needed approval from the Tribal Chief.

Since making his return earlier this month, Cena has gotten directly involved with The Bloodline, telling Uso at one point that the wrong brother had left SmackDown.

WWE reveals date and location for Fastlane 2023

WWE is bringing a pay-per-view event to Indiana this October.

During Tuesday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show, it was revealed that Fastlane 2023 will be held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, October 7. The show is set to stream live on Peacock/WWE Network.

Seth Rollins was supposed to be on The Pat McAfee Show to announce the news, but Paul Heyman ended up appearing instead. Rollins is defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Bron Breakker on NXT tonight.

Fastlane is returning for the first time since 2021. It will be the first time a WWE PPV has been held in Indianapolis since Clash of Champions 2016.

Before this year’s edition of the event, Fastlane was a PPV that took place on the road to WrestleMania.

McAfee and The Pat McAfee Show are based out of Indianapolis.

WWE’s PPV schedule for the remainder of 2023 is now starting to take shape. Last week, it was announced that Pittsburgh will host Payback 2023 on Saturday, September 2. That event is taking place during Labor Day weekend.

Here’s a look at the updated WWE PPV calendar:

  • Saturday, July 1: Money in the Bank at O2 Arena in London, England
  • Saturday, August 5: SummerSlam at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan
  • Saturday, September 2: Payback at PPG Paints Arena In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Saturday, October 7: Fastlane at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana
