Tuesday Update

WWE

  • Natalya wrote on Twitter about her match against Rhea Ripley on Raw Monday: “Tonight was personal. It was an apology to myself for putting up with what I didn’t deserve. Thank you so much to everyone who still believes in me, even when I didn’t always believe in myself. It truly means the world to me. Sometimes people forget, until I get the chance to remind them. I was made in The Dungeon. I can take anyone to their limit on any night, because that’s what top level competitors do. Now line up the rest and let me loose on them too.”
  • Ronda Rousey wrote on Instagram: When your time gets cut three times but you still put on a banger #ChickenSalad #TagTeamChampionships
  • Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre will be guests on this week’s episode of The Bump.
  • Regarding the WWE vs. MLW lawsuit, PWInsider reported on 6/30 WWE requested for an extension, noting that they “recently retained new counsel”.
  • Becky Lynch spoke to Cosmopolitan UK on her career and injuring her shoulder last year at SummerSlam against Becky Lynch.
  • Matches added to WWE’s YouTube on Tuesday include The Usos vs. The Street Profits from SummerSlam 2022, Asuka vs. Becky Lynch in a no holds barred match from the July 4, 2022 episode of Raw, and Sheamus vs. Randy Orton from SummerSlam 2010.

AEW

  • ROH Supercard of Honor 2023 has been added to HonorClub.
  • This week’s Sammy Guevara vlog.

Other Wrestling

  • Former WCW star Lodi wrote on Facebook he recently underwent open heart surgery after wrestling a match on June 17. He wrote: “On June 21, I went in for a triple by-pass heart surgery. I came out with FIVE by passes as two of the arteries needed 2 by-passes each. After two days in ICU, I walked out of the hospital on Sunday evening, June 25th. 9 days in the hospital is not my idea of fun. 4 days later I ended up back in the hospital with a blood clot and infection from an IV site. After two days I walked out again. I will address this more in depth soon. I just wanted those that called, texted, etc to know what was going on. Life for LODI will be a little different for a while, and today I am not even sure what that looks like.”
  • PWInsider recently contacted Reelz about a potential second season of MLW content on the channel. Reelz’s statement reads: “Talks for season two continue. Fans of Major League Wrestling can still watch past episodes of Underground Wrestling on subscription VOD services including Amazon Channels, Fire TV and Roku.”
  • Backstage comments from NJPW Strong’s Independence Day show in Japan from Tuesday morning.
  • Triplemania XXXI in Tijuana will air on HBO Max in Mexico on July 15.

Monday Update

– Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering Raw and the latest news.

– In response to the questions from Saturday night, Drew McIntyre has not signed a new deal with WWE. He is under contract for several more months and they have the right to extend it for a few more months due to injury, possibly through WrestleMania. Nothing has changed on the contract front. Based on the commentary by Michael Cole on his return, and comments to Paul Levesque at the press conference acting like there was never a story to begin with, people were given the impression he had signed a new long-term deal. This also doesn’t mean things are bad between the sides, just that he hasn’t agreed to terms yet.

– Raw is tonight from Baltimore. Coming off the PPV show, only Rhea Ripley vs. Natalya has been advertised ahead of time. Brock Lesnar will be back tonight to start the set up for his match with Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. They are looking at record numbers for SummerSlam as the gate is far ahead of all prior records and is likely to end up as the biggest non-Mania gate ever in the U.S. The ticket advance is the second biggest of all-time (behind 1992 in Wembley Stadium).

– Raw is over 10,000 tickets out tonight in Baltimore and will be sold out by show time.

– We’re looking for reports from tonight’s show with anything not on the live show such as Main Event matches or post-show stuff to [email protected]

– WWE has not yet put out a press release with the numbers from Saturday, perhaps waiting for the viewing numbers to finalize. We do know the live gate set the all-time record for England and was the second biggest in the U.K., which means the actual gate revenue topped the Wembley Stadium number from 1992 and we were told by a considerable amount. It won’t be first for long which also tells you why they are pushing the WrestleMania in Wembley Stadium idea. From those in the U.K., there is talk that is very serious about the idea, but obviously they want the local government to pay them for having the show there.

– In a comeback of the skit with Sami Zayn that drew huge ratings, on Friday’s SmackDown, The Usos will put Roman Reigns on trial as the main event of the show in Madison Square Garden.

– We’re looking for your thoughts on Money in the Bank from Saturday. You can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

– We’ve already completed a main story for Friday on Darren Drozdov for the new Observer. It’ll be one of the better stories of its type we’ve done this year.

– New Japan World has a PPV show from Korakuen Hall at 5:10 a.m. tomorrow. There are two shows actually. Tomorrow’s show has:

  • Ryusuke Taguchi & Yoh & Oskar Leube vs. Kengo & Dragon Libre & Takahiro Katori
  • The DKC vs. Bad Dude Tito
  • Lance Archer & Alex Zayne & Ryohei Oiwa vs. JR Kratos & Royce Isaacs & Jorel Nelson
  • Tom Lawlor vs. Kosei Fujita
  • Eddie Kingston & Rocky Romero vs. KENTA & Gedo
  • Giulia & Thekla vs. Willow Nightingale & Momo Kohgo
  • Hirooki Goto & Yoshi-Hashi defend the Strong tag titles against Gabriel Kidd & Alex Coughlin
  • TJP & Francesco Akira defend the IWGP jr. tag titles against Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney
  • Jon Moxley & Homicide vs. Jun Kasai & El Desperado

Moxley won’t be in Edmonton on Wednesday for Dynamite although he is expected to be on the show doing a taped interview. Moxley vs. Desperado in a death match headlines the Wednesday show at Korakuen Hall, also at 5:10 a.m., which also includes KENTA vs. Kingston for the Strong title and a rematch with Goto & Yoshi-Hashi vs. Kidd & Coughlin but this time for the IWGP tag titles.

– AEW will be available again in Mexico starting this week on the VIX streaming service owned by Televisa. Both Dynamite and Collision will be airing. AEW currently has no television in Mexico.

– Undertaker is doing a talk show today in Manchester, England as well as tomorrow in Glasgow, Scotland.

– Ronda Rousey will be on the Fox show Stars on Mars tonight head-to-head with Raw.

–The NXT show tomorrow was taped last week. Spoilers are up on the site and with details in the Observer. The Creeds vs. Dyad loser leave town plus Damon Kemp vs. Eddy Thorpe in an NXT Underground match which features the first angle with Gable Steveson, Mustafa Ali vs. Tyler Bate, Roxanne Perez vs. Blair Davenport and Jacy Jayne vs. Lyra Valkyria.

– Utami Hayashishita of Stardom, who was voted by the Observer readers and the 2021 Woman Wrestler of the Year, debuts with GCW on shows on 7/8 in Hartford, CT and 7/14 in New York City. She’ll also work for Jersey Championship Wrestling on 7/9 in Ridgefield Park, NJ.

Other Notes

– Defy announced shows on 7/28 and 7/29 at Washington Hall in Seattle. The first night will be an all-women’s show headlined by Vert Vixen, Nicole Matthews, Maki Itoh and Allie Katch. 7/29 will feature the return of Jon Moxley and the first round of the Defy Super 8XGP, an eight-man tournament. They will also make a Hall of Fame announcement shortly.

– UWN is taping television at the Irving Improv tonight at 7:30 p.m. with Danny Limelight vs. Invictus Khash as the main event.

– The LFA runs at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz, CA, with an MMA show headlined by Daniel Compton (8-2) of Santa Cruz against Renato Valente (9-6).

– Indie wrestler Megabyte Ronnie will be in tomorrow Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest that airs at 10:45 a.m. on ESPN. This usually draws a big rating built around the star power of Joey Chestnut.

– The Amazing Race Canada show debuts tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on CTV. Gail Kim and Gisele Shaw are a team in this competition.

Sunday Update

  • Bryan and I did our weekend WOR last night covering Money in the Bank and all the television shows and other news. We also did a show Friday with John Pollock, Paul Fontaine, Garrett Gonzales and myself on modern candidates for the Hall of Fame. We also talked about a lot of other news such as the addition of Collision, keeping up with so much wrestling and so many more things.
  • We’re looking for your thoughts on WWE Money in the Bank yesterday. You can leave a thumbs up, down or middle plus a best and worst match to [email protected].
  • We’re also looking for reports on the final night of the WWE UK tour today in Cardiff, Wales, which was an instant sellout (4800) months ago at the International Arena.
  • Just to clarify on the Shayna Baszler vs. Ronda Rousey finish from Saturday, I don’t know Rousey’s actual contract situation but she is leaving some time relatively soon and wanted to do a program with Baszler before leaving. The idea was to do the tag team thing longer and establish them as a team and not have the turn be so sudden but basically time ran out on them.
  • John Cena and Drew McIntyre were kept hidden last night at Money in the Bank. Cena was working there. While Cena has in the past talked about WrestleMania in London, there is more to that now than in the past. We discussed it on last night’s WOR, but it is definitely something they would like to see done. Obviously with AEW drawing the largest pro wrestling crowd in years at Wembley, WWE would like to top that and two nights of Mania would do so automatically.
  • Natalya and the Guinness Book of World Records people have added to her stuff in their annual book. They presented her with awards that will be in the next book for these world records: Most WWE women’s matches (1,514); Most WWE women’s wins (663); Most WWE women’s PLE appearances (75); Most WWE women’s WrestleMania appearances (8); Most women’s matches on Raw (174); and Most women’s’ matches on SmackDown (200)
  • Every winner of the women’s MITB match in history but one (Carmella) either cashed it in that night or the next day. So, IYO SKY already has the second-longest tenure as a MITB winner in history unless she cashes it in in Cardiff today which is very doubtful to happen. Every female winner in history has gone on to win the title. (Thanks to Arya Witner)
  • AEW Dynamite in Boston on 7/19 sold about 1000 tickets after the announcement of the Blood & Guts match. It was at about 5300 at the start of the weekend.
  • In an interview with Boxing Social, promoter Eddie Hearn said he believes Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury could be happening soon. He said he believes it’s happening but also said it would be an exhibition fight but who knows. Hearn was trying to put together Oleksandr Usyk vs. Fury which is why he made those comments.
  • Money in the Bank did 200,000 Google searches which, with the new standards after the change, is a great number. It used to be a normal number. Nothing else related to boxing, wrestling or MMA made the list including yesterday’s UFC show. It was up with Damian Lillard, the NASCAR race in Chicago, the changes in Twitter and the Los Angeles Lakers for the top spots over the weekend behind the death of actor Alan Arkin.
  • A&E tonight at 9 PM has WWE Most Wanted Treasures focusing on Trish Stratus and Alundra Blayze, plus Stone Cold Takes on America at 10 PM.
  • We’ve heard a lot of stuff about different matches this weekend to watch. Mirai won the Wonder of Stardom title from double champion Tam Nakano on today’s Stardom PPV show from Yokohama which is getting a lot of praise and called a classic. Also heavily praised are Rocky Romero vs Volador Jr. and Desperado vs. Mascara Dorada 2.0 matches from Arena Mexico where they had their biggest crowd in a long time. Several people also brought up Yuma Aoyagi’s Triple Crown title win today over Yuji Nagata which took place today at Korakuen Hall. On the GLEAT show, which is free on YouTube, I was told there was a great match if you like UWFi style with Hayato Fujita winning their UWF world title from Takanori Ito. Another match was the Kobe World Memorial Festival show today by Dragon Gate where Diamante lost his mask, as expected, in a five-way loser loses his mask cage match with Dragon Kid, Ultimo Dragon, Strong Machine J and Shun Skywalker. That show drew Dragon Gate’s biggest crowd in years, with both Hiromu Takahashi (over Yamato) and Shingo Takagi (destroying Konomama Ichikawa twice) as outside attractions.
  • AEW Dynamite in the UK, which airs on Friday nights, is off ITV 4 due to darts coverage. It will air on the main ITV 1 station at 11:40 p.m. Friday night. So, it will be on a much more viewed channel but in a worse time slot. (thanks to Stephen Lyon)
  • Bret Hart turns 66 today.
  • On last night’s WOR when talking about Kurt Angle and winning match of the year, he did win it once: in 2002 with the Angle & Chris Benoit vs. Edge & Rey Mysterio match at the No Mercy PPV. People forget about it but it was one of the best matches of that era. (thanks to Arya Witner)
  • American Pro Wrestling will hold a memorial show for Dan Parris on 7/8 in Bollins Spring, SC, at 4 p.m. The show is at 120 Builders Court. Parris, who passed away last week, was a great proponent for Carolinas independent wrestling for decades and a really nice guy.

Other Stuff

  • ICW No Holds Barred from last night in Red Bank, TN: Malcolm Monroe III b Sean Campbell, John Wayne Murdoch b Hardway Heeter, Tank b Mickie Knuckles, Jaden Newman b Danny Demanto, Bobby Beverly b Dr. Redacted, Brandon & Kasey Kirk b Krule & Max the Impaler, Hoodfoot b Tommy Vendetta. Saturday Update

WWE

  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted a tribute to Darren Drozdov following Droz’s passing: “Man I’m so sorry to hear one of our ring brothers has passed away. Darren Drozdov aka Droz. We wrestled on a lot of cards together. Such an awesome dude. Great personality and great wrestling talent. We always talked about football and fishing. Sending love, strength, mana and light to his family. RIP brother”
  • Lita wrote: “Be at peace, Darren. Droz really helped me get through my broken neck. He was so encouraging to me. His positivity helped me let go of anger I had due to being sidelined. He will always be an inspiration. #RIPDroz”
  • WWE uploaded the opening video for today’s Money in the Bank PPV.
  • I previewed Money in the Bank for Sports Illustrated.
  • The Judgment Day recreated The Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover while in England.
  • Ariel Helwani interviewed The Usos and LA Knight.
  • While speaking with Helwani, Knight was asked if it bothers him when people call him a knockoff of The Rock or Steve Austin:
          • Oh my God, man. Look, when I was in high school those guys were my bread and butter. Those are the guys that I wanted to be when I was like 16, 17 years old. I’m sure there’s – hell… my normal speech pattern everyday when I’m talking to you is somehow derived from them. Whether that’s purposeful or not, and it’s definitely not.
          • So it’s just the fact that, man, I sat there and watched every single episode of Monday Night Raw. I had all the little VHS cassette tapes like ‘Cause Stone Cold Said So,’ or ‘The Rock Says,’ and stuff like that. I watched all that stuff. So man, you’re talking about formative years, very moldable years of maybe in some way have penetrated my brain in some way. But whether you want to make the comparisons — hey, I’ll tell you what. Let’s make this comparison. You want to say that I’m the Kobe to their Jordan? I’ll take it.
  • Booker T praised the work that Finn Balor is doing in WWE right now:
          • Finn Balor is doing some of his best work right now and I tell you that match with Carmelo Hayes was a breaking out moment for me with Finn Balor. I mean, not that I haven’t bought on what he’s been doing as of late, but when he went out and went to kicking Carmelo’s ass like it was a real fight, I was like, oh man, I like this Finn Balor here. This dude right here, this is the guy, and the thing is we know Finn Balor can fly. We know he could do all of the moves. He can do the flips. He can do all the dives and all of that, but this guy right here that we’re seeing is the Finn Balor that’s going to work at the main-event level, perhaps from this point of his career on.
  • Balor was the guest on this week’s episode of WWE After the Bell.
  • ESPN has an article where WWE wrestlers detail the most brutal bumps they’ve taken in their careers.
  • Cosmopolitan UK interviewed Becky Lynch.
  • British GQ has a profile on Seth Rollins’ home life.
  • WWE filed trademarks for “Zeus” and “Nyx” on June 27.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • A “Country Whipping” match between Mance Warner and Sam Adonis is set for MLW Never Say Never on Saturday, July 8. The show is taking place in Philadelphia and will air live on Fite+. MLW wrote about the stipulation: “Both combatants will be armed with unforgiving leather straps. The objective: beat the hell out one another with a leather strap until the other can’t take it and pin him.”
  • On AEW Unrestricted this week, Adam Cole, Evil Uno, and Nik Sobic discussed AEW’s Fight Forever video game. Sobic is AEW’s senior vice president of business development, partnerships, and video games.

Friday Update

– We will be doing a special Observer Radio show today with some guests talking current news as well as the Hall of Fame. For the weekend, Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night talking Money in the Bank, Darren Drozdov and the latest news.

– Very sad news today with the death of Darren Drozdov, who faced worse adversity than almost all of us but kept a great disposition about it. Drozdov ended up a quadriplegic for a while, although regained use of his upper body, from a neck injury landing from a powerbomb by D-Lo Brown on October 5, 1999, at the Nassau Coliseum. He landed on his head and broke two vertebrae in his neck, and underwent immediate surgery. He remained part of WWF/WWE for several years doing writing and Internet shows. He only wrestled a brief period of time before the accident. His injuries were such that he needed 24 hour a day medical care.

Drozdov, who was 54, was a former NFL player with the Denver Broncos before pro wrestling. He had some NFL notoriety because he once vomited during a Monday Night Football game right on the ball. He had the ability to puke at will which impressed Vince McMahon in a very strange segment in the movie “Beyond the Mat.” He was at one point made the third Road Warrior, likely with the idea Hawk was needing to be replaced because of his own issues. It was a tough position to be put in that position so early in his career. Nobody ever said anything bad about him and he never put any blame on Brown for the accident.

– A big new issue of the Observer is out today. It features:

  • Fan reactions and poll for Forbidden Door
  • Thoughts on the Omega-Ospreay and Okada-Danielson matches, as well as the difference in match of the years today with in the past that is concerning. – MITB from the O2 Arena in London looks strong on paper with this lineup:

  • Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler vs. Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan for the women’s tag titles
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Dominik Mysterio
  • Gunther vs. Matt Riddle for the IC tile
  • Women’s MITB: Iyo Sky, Bayley, Zoey Stark, Trish Stratus, Becky Lynch and Zelina Vega

  • Damir Ismagulov (156) vs. Grant Dawson (156)
  • Sean Strickland (186) vs. Abus Magomedov (186)

– Terry Funk turned 79 today. Today is also the birthday of Cody Rhodes (38) and Dax Harwood (39). Terry Funk is one of the greatest in-ring performers of all-time and one of the most open minded as well. I’ll never be able to thank him enough for teaching me to embrace all styles that work and not ignore them because they are new. At a time when almost all males shunned Japanese women wrestling, he told me I had to study them because they were the look into the future of both men and women wrestling, and those 80s matches were far ahead of their time. He was a genius performer inside the ring.

– Thanks to everyone who helped out with the show reports in the U.K. and Ontario over the past week. The new issue has complete coverage and business notes of every WWE and AEW show this past week. Thanks to Amin Anjani, Matty Barker, Sarah Brooks, Joe Del Busso,David Dully, Kevin Durata, Steve Khan, Jamie Logie, Stephen Lyon, Leonardo Mendez Toledo, Matt Murphy, William Rauch, Jonathan Smith, Jeff Zinger, Shannon Walsh and Fox Whittaker.

– We’re looking for reports on these shows:

  • WWE today in Newcastle, England
  • Dark matches from Smackdown today in London
  • WWE Sunday in Cardiff, Wales
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights from these events.

– The Junior Dos Santos vs. Fabricio Werdum fight we wrote about last week is currently set for Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Fighter Bare Knuckle MMA promotion show on 9/8 in Jacksonville. This is actually a throwback to the early years of UFC and Pancrase, which didn’t allow gloves, until Tank Abbott changed the game. The original UFC and Pancrase featured a lot more grappling and submissions because of not allowing gloves.

Other Notes

– Combate Global is heavily marketing Jimmie Pace Jr., who fights tomorrow night, under the name Jimbo Slice. Slice (2-0) will face Boris Garcia (2-1). The show airs on Paramount + at 8 p.m. Eastern and 5 p.m. Pacific time. That’s an earlier start that the promotion usually has for its Saturday night shows and Combate just sent us the new start time this morning so this was a late change.

– Nikki Garcia, the former Nikki Bella, will be competing in the American Cornhole League’s Johnsonville SuperHole IV TV event on Friday night in Milwaukee at the Summerfest Music Festival in a celebrity charity match. The show airs live this coming Friday night at 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

– PWP runs tomorrow night in Omaha, NE at the Waiting Room Lounge built around Tommy Dreamer.

– W3L Box office tonight started streaming the last match of Doug Williams. The service has matches and full events dating back more than 20 years.

– The El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Komander match from Defy in Portland went out last night at Wremix World Premier. The entire show is free to stream.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • In a video for Cool Kicks, Dave Bautista confirmed that he was supposed to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year but couldn’t attend the ceremony because he was filming a movie: “I was in South Africa. I was supposed to go into the Hall of Fame, but I was on this film I was committed to. I couldn’t get out of it.”
  • Baron Corbin returned to his Lone Wolf character for his match against Carmelo Hayes on NXT Gold Rush last night.
  • Nathan Frazer tweeted after defeating Dragon Lee on NXT: “Dragon Lee is a dude who I used to watch to get inspiration from on my way up. And to beat him tonight… it’s literally the biggest win of my career so far. Just reminds me of how far I’ve come. Cheers for the war @dragonlee95, proud to call you a friend”
  • Tiffany Stratton was the guest on this week’s episode of Out of Character. Stratton addressed how much of herself is in her TV character: “I would say a lot of it is kind of just my inner thoughts. It’s just me actually saying it. Honestly, if I’m going to be real, I kind of just take what I think and I like to turn it up a bunch of notches. I’m a very irritable person. It’s not a good trait to have, but I guess it is for the character of Tiffany Stratton.”
  • Sgt. Slaughter told Bill Apter that he watches less WWE programming than he used to because of Lacey Evans using the Cobra Clutch:
          • I don’t watch it [WWE] as much as I did, cause I’m a little upset — I watch more Raw because SmackDown has Lacey on it. I don’t want to get — it doesn’t upset me because I know she can’t put a Cobra Clutch on like I do, but it’s just the thought that she’s using a move without — at least I would think the writer or somebody would call me up and say, ‘Hey, you mind if we use the Cobra Clutch?’
          • Or maybe call it something else because [Ted] DiBiase [Sr.] brought it in when I was gone with G.I. Joe and he used it as the Million Dollar Dream, the Cobra Clutch was the Million Dollar Dream. She could have maybe come up with another name of it, but just to call it the Cobra Clutch — I had to end up using the Camel Clutch when I came back [in 1990] because DiBiase was using my hold. So I asked Khosrow [Iron Sheik], I said ‘Is it okay if I use your move?’ And he said, ‘Yes, Sergeant, it would be an honor for you to use that.’
          • That’s the way the business was. You respected your talent, and the people that you worked with. I never would have used it unless he said yes, use it, because he’s the one who made it famous.
  • Jake Paul spoke to Sports Illustrated about his brother Logan competing in Money in the Bank: “There’s no doubt in my mind he will win. At the end of the day, he’s an entertainer and a super athlete. He can do backflips, the splits, kip-ups, and he’s been creating his own moves out here training in Puerto Rico. He’s creative. That’s what the sport is built around: creativity. We’re hated in these worlds, and we fit perfectly into those characters.”
  • On Foley is Pod, Mick Foley celebrated the 25th anniversary of his Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker from King of the Ring 1998.
  • WWE wrestlers recalled where they were when the Undertaker vs. Foley Hell in a Cell match happened.
  • Trish Stratus, Zoey Stark, Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams, and Sam Roberts were on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • A trios match with Orange Cassidy, Keith Lee & El Hijo del Vikingo facing Daniel Garcia, Matt Menard & Angelo Parker has been added to the lineup for tonight’s Dynamite.
  • IGN published its review of AEW Fight Forever, rating the game a six out of 10:
          • ‘Unrealized potential’ feels like the story of AEW: Fight Forever as a whole. So much of it feels like a very good start, going full gear with bouncy animations, the quick pace of the action, and fun and effective character design. But almost all of its good ideas are hampered by bugs and opaque or outright useless systems. Its big single-player mode is poorly written and, though it’s a relative breeze to complete and full of branching options, it’s all out of good ways to point you to them. There’s a strong foundation to bet double or nothing on in a sequel down the road, and I think there’s still fun to be had here with like-minded friends who are content with casually beating each other up, but this is no wrestling game revolution.
  • Our Bryan Rose also has a review of Fight Forever. The game’s official release date is tomorrow.
  • Due to illness, Max Caster will no longer be competing at this Thursday’s Wrestling Open show in Worcester, Massachusetts. Caster was scheduled to face Richard Holliday at the event. Holliday will still be wrestling against a new opponent.
  • Last night’s Junkyard Dog episode of Dark Side of the Ring averaged 229,000 viewers on Vice TV. That’s up from the 201,000 viewers last week’s Doink the Clown/Matt Borne documentary averaged. The rating in the 18-49 demo was down slightly, going from a 0.07 to a 0.06.
  • The trailer for “The Collective,” which Mercedes Mone has a role in, has been released. The movie is set to be released on August 4. Here’s the description for it:
          • A group of righteous assassins called The Collective take aim at a highly sophisticated human trafficking ring backed by a network of untouchable billionaires. With their backs against the wall, The Collective has no choice but to put their most important mission in the hands of rookie assassin Sam Alexander.
  • Jacob Fatu will defend his National Openweight title against Calvin Tankman at MLW Never Say Never in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 8. The show is airing live on Fite+.

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw, fallout from Forbidden Door and the latest news plus you can send questions to tonight’s show to [email protected]

From an injury perspective, as noted last night, it appeared that Bryan Danielson suffered a fractured forearm. The hope is that he can be back for All In and All Out. Kenny Omega was okay. He scared a lot of people with that Tiger drive ’91 spot and said he was a little bit sore, but that’s usually the case after a big match. There’s no update on Sting past he is scheduled to wrestle on Wednesday night in Hamilton, ONT where Chris Jericho brings back The Painmaker gimmick he used in New Japan. It’s Jericho & Sammy Guevara in a tornado match against Sting & Darby Allin, plus Ruby Soho vs. Britt Baker in the Owen Hart tournament.

Collision is being taped on Thursday night for a Saturday airing in Hamilton, ONT with Samoa Joe vs. Roderick Strong, Juice Robinson vs. Ricky Starks and Dustin Rhodes vs. Powerhouse Hobbs in the Owen Hart tournament.

My story on last night’s show in Sports Illustrated.

The flag spot in the Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay match was planned and the guy with the flag was a Canadian pro wrestler, Chip Chambers.

Raw tonight is from Savannah, GA. This was a very Vince McMahon show as he apparently made a ton of changes today as he’s become more and more into the creative process. Ronda Rousey vs. Raquel Rodriguez and all the women in the Money in the Bank match will appear in a summit segment. They had 6,531 tickets out as of this morning. It will be sold out or close because a legit sellout of the Enmarket Arena with a TV set up would be about 6,750 tickets.

The Smackdown crew house shows in Europe starting on Thursday night in Dublin, Ireland has Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn defending the tag titles against Usos, Street Profits and Pretty Deadly, Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley & Bianca Belair for the women’s title, Austin Theory vs. A.J. Styles for the U.S. title, Bobby Lashley vs. Karrion Kross, Rey Mysterio vs. LA Knight, Sheamus & Ridge Holland vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson plus Solo Sikoa and Santos Escobar.

Dark Side of the Ring tomorrow night is on Junkyard Dog.

LA Knight did an interview with the Daily Star in the U.K. where he challenged Prince Charles to a fight.

Kevin Mieche of Sportsnet on last night’s show:

On Sunday night in Toronto those inside Scotiabank Arena were witness to a wrestling showcase normally reserved for those inside the Tokyo Dome. Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay wrestled a match that used to only be available to fans via a 5-star rating. It wasn’t a match that was seemed attainable to watch in many circles on fandom, just something you’d hear about, rather than see. There was a mystique about it. Now, though, thanks to a partnership between All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, matches such as Omega vs Ospreay are no longer destined to be just another match to gather dust around the water cooler. No, the fabled 5-star Tokyo Dome matches now happen live, in real-time in front of the North American eyes. “It was one of the best matches I’ve ever seen,” said an ecstatic AEW President Tony Khan. Indeed, the reception inside Scotiabank Arena would substantiate that claim, while others watching at home echoed it.

All Elite Wrestling’s Forbidden Door 2 is the latest example of anew generation of wrestling now available to fans sandwiched between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. At the top of the card this year alongside Omega and Ospreay was a dream bout between a pair of wrestlers considered two of the all-time greats in Bryan Danielson and Kazuchika Okada. However it was Omega and Ospreay stealing the show in the third-to-last match, with Danielson admitting afterwards that, “I didn’t want to follow (that match).” Omega, a native of Winnipeg, and Ospreay, hailing from the United Kingdom, exchanged brutal punishment in and out of the ring for over 40 minutes before Ospreay was able to finally pin Omega to capture the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship.

“The energy was spectacular,” Ospreay said during a press conference after the event, noting the distinct home field advantage for Omega. “That’s probably one my happiest moments of my life, I mean that’s incredible, never felt that before in my entire life. Literally had 13,000 people just hating my guts.13,000-plus versus one.” While Omega is proudly Canadian, he will never be mistaken for the type of Canadian babyface that Bret Hart portrayed. Omega, instead, goes about his Canadian-ness in a quiet manner. However on Sunday night, Omega was a full-fledged Canadian hero, a direct contrast to Ospreay, who took time during the match to steal a Canadian flag from ringside and floss it between his legs, similar to what Shawn Michaels did in WWE in 1997. “Did I get in trouble for that Canada flag stuff?” Ospreay joked.

The success of the event went beyond just the wrestling product, though, as Khan noted to reporters afterwards that the money earned via ticket sales was the company’s highest grossing gate of all-time at over $1.2 million USD. The success at the box office and in the ring had the company founder grinning ear-to-ear. “It was exactly what I expected I had the highest of expectations,” said Khan. “This is one of my favourite wrestling cities.”

Danielson added that the crowd was hot that he and Okada, “could have pulled our pants down and people, at least at first, would have enjoyed it.” “When I came to Toronto, I was expecting one of the best wrestling cities in the world and they delivered it,” added Khan. “they showed why this is so great here. I had high expectations and, if anything, I feel like (Toronto) exceeded it. I expected it to be great and it was great.”

Outside the two aforementioned matches, the card was littered with big names. Joining Omega and Danielson were other AEW stalwarts such as MJF, CM Punk, Chris Jericho, Sting, DarbyAllin, the Young Bucks and Hangman Adam Page, among others. While other NJPW talent included Sanada, Zack Sabre Jr., Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naito, among others. Not losing the significance of the show was Danielson, who said, “when have you seen two companies work together like this in a way that is absolutely best for the wrestling fans?”

We were sorry to hear that Dan Parris, a long time Carolinas independent announcer, passed away this morning in his home. (thanks to Gene Restaino)

Sheamus will be at the NHL Awards airing on TNT at 8 pm.

Eric Bischoff shaved his head to help raise $13,500 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Sunday Update

Bryan and I will be up tonight after Forbidden Door covering the show along with the rest of the weekend news. We also have a week in review show with Garrett and I up on the site.

Just to clear something up regarding the situation in AEW and people kept apart, as tonight is the first time the Elite and C.M. Punk will be on the same show, is that FTR is not part of this equation. FTR actually went out of their way of late to clear the air and have no working issues with each other. Most involved have confirmed that all is good between them and the hope was that other discussions would happen soon.

On the loud but mixed reaction C.M. Punk got last night in Toronto, those there said Punk was fine with it and even told the crowd it’s okay to boo him if you want to. He cut a total face promo, blamed himself for the loss since he was the captain and said like the Toronto Maple Leafs, he’ll come back stronger. Dax Harwood did a promo talking about the 2/3 fall match with Chad Gable & Jason Jordan. He didn’t mention Gable & Jordan by name but mentioned the 2/3 fall match in the building. He said that match was one of the matches that helped get them where they are now. As we’ve noted, it really doesn’t matter if Punk is cheered, booed, or the reaction is in between. The key is if he helps grow business. He could be cheered and if there’s no business growth, that means far less than if he’s booed like crazy and business grows. People were vociferous both for and against him. Live in the building the crowd cheered FTR, Starks, Jay White and Juice Robinson while Punk got heavily cheered and heavily booed. Right now it feels like the company has momentum, but it’s also in its early stages. Last night’s show moved a lot of tickets in the last week so that’s a positive sign.

Regarding Friday’s Smackdown and the Bayley vs. Shotzi match with the MITB shot at stake, the LA Knight vs. Santos Escobar vs. Butch match and the Cameron Grimes vs. Baron Corbin match that were all advertised, this was Vince McMahon making heavy last minute changes to the show. There was a pattern before Vince got back involved that almost all the advertised matches would take place, and before when Vince was in control, things were changed at the last minute all the time. But there was a lot of unhappiness that this much had changed.

Forbidden Door is tonight at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. They put a lot of new tickets on sale yesterday and were at 13,419 this morning. There were actually 13,870 available at that time. So even though this was an instant sellout, there were and probably still are some tickets available now. This looks to be a nearly five hour show:

First hour pre show matches:

  • Stu Grayson vs. El Phantasmo
  • Trent Baretta & El Desperado & Rocky Romero vs. Brian Cage & Bishop Kuan & Toa Liona
  • Jeff Cobb & Kyle Fletcher & TJP vs. Hiromu Takahashi & Shingo Takagi & Bushi
  • Athena vs. Billie Starkz in an Owen Hart Foundation tournament match

Main card:

  • MJF vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for AEW title
  • Sting & Darby Allin & Tetsuya Naito vs. Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki
  • Toni Storm vs. Willow Nightingale fr AEW title
  • Orange Cassidy vs. Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Daniel Garcia for the International title
  • C.M. Punk vs. Satoshi Kojima for the Owen Hart Foundation tournament
  • Jon Moxley & Wheeler Yuta & Claudio Castagnoli & Konosuke Takeshita & Shota Umino vs. Young Bucks & Adam Page & Eddie Kingston & Tomohiro Ishii
  • Sanada vs. Jack Perry for IWGP title
  • Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay for U.S. title
  • Kazuchika Okada vs. Bryan Danielson

We’re looking for your thoughts on Forbidden Door so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

We’re looking for reports on these shows:

  • NXT on Friday night in Fort Pierce, FL
  • NXT last night in Citrus Springs, FL
  • WWE house show tonight in Mobile, AL

We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

Chris Samsa noted that Kazuchika Okada made his debut on August 29, 2004, in Mexico City, in a Toryumon match and Bryan Danielson was on that card.

Fantastica Mania takes place in Puebla tomorrow night with Averno & Mephisto & El Satanico vs Tiger Mask & Desperado & Atlantis, plus Bushi & Tetsuya Naito & Rocky Romero & Titan vs. Magia Blanca & Magnus & Rugido & Volador Jr.

For Google trends this past week, the only things that cracked the top 20 were Maycee Barber for yesterday’s ABC TV fight with Amanda Ribas, which had 20,000 searches and on Thursday the talk of an Elon Musk vs. Mark Zuckerberg got 100,000 searches and was No. 7 for the day. People were raving about the Barber win over Ribas as something to go out of your way to see.

Another match, this time from pro wrestling, getting a lot of praise was the Utami Hayashishita & Saya Kamitani & AZM & Hinda & Lady C & Miyu Amasaki cage match win over Natsuoko Tora & Saki Kashima & Momo Watanabe & Starlight Kid & Ruaka & Rina match at today’s Stardom PPV show at Yoyogi Gym. Hayashishita was busted open and bled heavily after being hit with a lead pipe to the face by Tora when she was trying to escape. Oedo Tai turned on Kashima for being the last one left in the cage and losing the match for them and the winning Queen’s Quest team made the save. But Kashima did not join Queen’s Quest today. One reader said it was similar to some of the biggest Dragon Gate Dead or Alive cage matches and how the storytelling and usage of weapons came across so well.

Mariah May & Mina Shirakawa won the Goddess of Stardom tag titles from Mirai & Ami Sohrei on the show. Giulia also issued a challenge to Willow Nightingale for the New Japan Strong women’s title. This looks to take place either 7/4 or 7/5 at Korakuen Hall.

Matt Cardona will be on the DDT 7/23 Peter Pan show at Sumo Hall, facing Tetsuya Endo for their Universal title. Yuji Hino vs. Chris Brookes is the main event for the KO-D title. Konosuke Takeshita returns to face Yuki Ueno on the show.

WWE’s Most Wanted Treasures at 9 p.m. Eastern tonight on A&E will be about Kurt Angle. Stone Cold Takes on America airs at 10 p.m.

WWE house show from last night in Monroe, LA:

  • Charlotte Flair b Bayley with the figure eight
  • Omos b Rick Boogs with a tree slam
  • Santos Escobar b LA Knight by holding the tights. Knight was very popular and he cut a promo before the match on winning Money in the Bank and fans weren’t happy Escobar came out to interrupt the promo. They didn’t boo Escobar but started giving him the what statement.
  • Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler kept the women’s tag titles over Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan. Rousey & Baszler came out with both sets of belts.
  • Bobby Lashley b Baron Corbin
  • Asuka b Shotzi with the Asuka lock to keep the WWE women’s title
  • Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn won four-way to keep the tag titles over Street Profits, Pretty Deadly and Sheamus & Butch when Zayn pinned Elton Prince.

The WWE opens its tour of the U.K. on Wednesday in Liverpool for a house show with this card:

  • Raquel Rodriguez vs. Piper Niven
  • Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bronson Reed
  • Ricochet vs. Dominik Mysterio
  • Becky Lynch vs. Zoey Stark
  • Matt Riddle & New Day (Kofi Kingston advertised as back in the ring after his recent injury) vs. Emporium
  • Natalya vs. Rhea Ripley for women’s world title
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Finn Balor street fight
  • Seth Rollins vs. Damien Priest for world title

There was huge controversy regarding Friday night’s PFL show in Atlanta, which drew a reported sellout. In a battle of former lightweight season champions, Natan Schulte vs. Raush Manfio, Shulte won a decision 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 to advance to the final four in the division. Schulte took third in the standings. But later, the PFL announced that Shulte and Manfio did not give their best efforts (the two, who are very close friends, had what was described as a sparring session) and the promotion pulled Schulte from the final four and replaced him with fifth place Shane Burgos. The statement said both fighters have been suspended because the match “did not meet the standards which all PFL fighters agree to uphold in competition.” They took away Schulte’s points. Schulte is the Godfather of Manfio’s daughter and Manfio had noted that Schulte had lent him money to allow him to not lose his house and had said he was his best friend. A lot of reporters were very critical of the PFL for this, noting that this type of decision should have come from the athletic commission, basically overturning a win, and not the promotion.

Georges St-Pierre called himself a big fan of Elon Musk, said he’d like to help train Musk for a fight with Mark Zuckerberg. Earlier Jon Jones said he’d like to train Zuckerberg for such a fight.

Xavier Woods and Kenny Omega have gone back-and-forth in the video game world trading barbs. They’ve been working their own feud for five years or more. If you recall, many years ago both the New Day and Elite worked to put together a six-man tag but political issues kept it from happening.

OTHER NOTES

A horse named Cactus Jack won the second race at Monmouth in New Jersey yesterday and paid $19 (thanks to Barry Werner)

Pro Wrestling Eve runs on 7/2 at The Dome in Tufnell Park in London. They announced Billie Starkz on the show against Nina Samuels along with Miyu Yamashita vs. Emersyn Jayne.

Choco Pro, a women’s promotion in Japan will be running 8/26, All In weekend, at The Yard Theater in Hackney Wick, London at 2 p.m. You must be over the age of 18 to attend.

  • Last night’s SmackDown averaged 2.25 million viewers in the fast national ratings, down slightly from last week’s fast national average of 2.278 million. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.6.
  • Three matches that had been announced for SmackDown didn’t take place. Bayley vs. Shotzi, LA Knight vs. Santos Escobar vs. Butch, and Cameron Grimes vs. Baron Corbin were set for last night’s show but removed from advertising before it started. The triple threat was changed to a singles match with Knight defeating Rey Mysterio.
  • Bayley’s women’s Money in the Bank ladder match spot was supposed to be on the line against Shotzi. Bayley tweeted today: “Card subject to change..Sorry. Sorry you couldn’t watch me beat dat ass”
  • Bianca Belair and Montez Ford renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas: “Happy 5 Years! We renewed our vows on our 5 Year Anniversary! Even though we meant our vows the 1st time we said them! And I’ll marry you over and over and over again. @montezfordwwe was suppose to propose at the Grand Canyon 5 years ago but got too excited and proposed in the parking lot on the way to the airport! Lol so we took it back to Vegas 5 years later to renew our vows!”
  • Less than a month after undergoing neck fusion surgery, Braun Strowman noted that he’s gotten the green light to resume light weight training: “Just got the green light to start light weight training again!!!! Time to rebuild the #Monster”
  • LA Knight challenged King Charles to a fight when WWE comes to London: “I gotta go to the top man and run for King Charles. I know he’s old and beaten down and you know busted up, but I’ve got to take the crown.”
  • In celebration of the 25th anniversary of his debut, Edge reacted to the greatest moments from his career.
  • Charlotte Flair, Grayson Waller, and Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler were interviewed on The SmackDown LowDown.
  • Becky Lynch was the guest on the latest episode of WWE After the Bell.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • AEW uploaded its Countdown special for Forbidden Door.
  • Our Josh Nason previewed Forbidden Door for Sports Illustrated.
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi named some opponents he’d like to face if he wins the AEW World Championship:
          • [Claudio] Castagnoli is a great wrestler. I know that he used to team with Shinsuke Nakamura, and that was an emotional link for me. I’d love to have a singles match against him.
          • And I want to wrestle CM Punk since I couldn’t do it last year. I have wrestled Bryan Danielson once before when I was younger. But with him being one of the top wrestlers in the U.S. and the world right now, I’d love for us to go again.
  • Anthony Bowens responded to the positive “he’s gay” chants he received from the crowd while interacting with Harley Cameron on Rampage: “If ya told me years ago, I’d have an arena chanting HE’S GAY at me in the most POSITIVE of ways, I’d say you’re crazy. It’s pretty cool to see how far we’ve come. Still more work to do. Happy Pride #AEWRampage”
  • Tony Khan was interviewed on CNBC this week
  • Aubrey Edwards was a guest on the Battleground Podcast.
  • Rocky Romero appeared on AEW Unrestricted.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • After last night’s NXT went off the air, Seth Rollins gave a speech to the crowd. Rollins retained his World Heavyweight Championship against Bron Breakker in the main event of the episode.
  • Dana Brooke posted a tweet responding to the negative reaction she received from the crowd during her match against Cora Jade on NXT: “Alright I get it, y’all think I suck….Got it, NOTED, Awesome….. &…..”
  • Rhea Ripley told the Under the Ring podcast that she and Dominik Mysterio barely talked to each other before joining The Judgment Day:
          • We barely talked before this whole Judgment Day thing. Like we said, ‘Hi, how are you,’ and that was about it. But watching our chemistry just sort of blossom and grow week by week and we’re getting more comfortable with each other, which is fantastic. It’s been really fun and also getting to watch him grow as a performer and blossom and get more confident week in and week out has been very rewarding as well. I feel like since we’re both like around the same age, I’m 26, he’s 25, I feel like our minds are very similar and we just want to go out there and be chaotic and be menacers and just have fun, so that’s pretty much what we’re doing. We’re just going out there and we’re having fun and reacting off of each other and growing our bond. I think people are seeing that in a way and it makes it easy for them to follow and it makes it easy for them to understand what’s going on. I think it’s been fun for people to see how much we’ve grown together, but we’re having the time of our lives.
  • Sheamus said in an interview with Metro
  • that he doesn’t think WWE has really capitalized on The Brawling Brutes as a group:
          • I just don’t think they’ve really capitalized on the group, I don’t think they’ve really let us show what we can do. This stop/start stuff is really hard when you’re trying to highlight young talent.
          • It’s frustrating, you know? So I dunno, maybe we’ll get an opportunity to show what we can really do as a group because a lot of those other groups who are out there now have definitely got an opportunity that we haven’t had to do some storyline stuff, some character stuff.
          • That’s kinda been a shame, mate, to be honest, considering the talent that’s in there.
  • Pretty Deadly and Raquel Rodriguez were guests on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
  • WWE commentator Kevin Patrick was interviewed on Out of Character.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Bryan Alvarez reports that CM Punk is at tonight’s Dynamite, which is being held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Punk will be appearing on tonight’s show.
  • Saraya tweeted that she’ll be in Chicago for Dynamite tonight.
  • Tony Khan was a guest on our Pacific Rim podcast with Jim Valley and Fumi Saito.
  • In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Alex Shelley said friends from WWE, Japan, and AEW reached out to him after his Impact World Championship win: “I was very grateful that people watched the match and shared the moment with me. I’ve heard from a lot of people I was close with over the past 20 years. People from all over, including WWE and Japan and AEW. I didn’t even recognize some of the numbers at first. It was mind-blowing, it meant the world to me and I responded to every single one of those texts.”
  • Gail Kim and Gisele Shaw have been announced as one of the teams for season nine of The Amazing Race Canada. The season, which has already been filmed, premieres on July 4.
  • NJPW’s website has an in-character interview with Will Ospreay. He said competing in hostile territory at Forbidden Door in Toronto won’t be an issue for him:
          • No, I mean, I grew up in Essex, you know what I mean. It’s a horrible place. There are some nice parts of Essex, but it is a horrible place. I grew up around horrible, nasty people. I grew up going to football stadiums where people were getting stomped on their heads. I just grew up around that. So I fully embrace that, you know what I mean? In more of the sense that, the more you attack me with boos, it just kind of like, fuels me. It gets me off. Without being funny, I almost welcome it.
          • And honestly, I’ve been to Canada once, I went for a Ring of Honor show. And it was so f***ing boring, and everybody’s so up their own arse. Like, I don’t know where this notion came from, or all Canadians being so polite and all. Bret Hart, especially. All he ever does is just moan. All the time. He has nothing nice to say about wrestling, so why would you ever want to be near that guy? It’s just- I can’t stand Canada. I really can’t. So it’s going to be very satisfying going into that alien territory and whupping [Kenny Omega] in front of anyone.
  • AEW shared a Fight Forever video looking at the exploding barbed wire death match in the game. AEW also has character spotlights on CM Punk, Miro, Anna Jay, and Malakai Black.
  • This week’s episode of Tony Schiavone’s What Happened When podcast is an All Japan watchalong with Eddie Kingston.

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking the latest wrestling news as well as covering Raw, Forbidden Door and more.

MLW sent out this press release regarding the antitrust lawsuit surviving WWE’s attempts to have it thrown out of court, writing:

NEW YORK, NY – Kasowitz Benson Torres, on behalf of professional wrestling promotion company MLW Media, has defeated a motion to dismiss MLW’s amended complaint asserting federal antitrust and state law unfair competition claims against World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for monopolizing and attempting to monopolize the market for the sale or licensing of media rights to professional wrestling events in the United States. MLW’s claims will now proceed to discovery. In denying the motion, Judge Edward J. Davila, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, held that MLW had sufficiently alleged all four elements of its antitrust claims— relevant market, market power, anticompetitive conduct and antitrust injury-and declined to dismiss the state law claims. Marc E. Kasowitz stated “We are pleased with Judge Davila’s well-reasoned opinion and look forward to recovering the substantial damages that MLW has suffered as a result of WWE’s many years of egregious anticompetitive behavior.”The Kasowitz Benson Torres team representing MLW Media is led by partner Marc E. Kasowitz and includes partners Christine A. Montenegro, Nicholas A. Rendino and Jason S. Takenouchi.

One thing I want to mention MLW has a very strong legal team. Still, this is a very formidable case and it’s noteworthy that WWE and UFC are now both being sued for antitrust reasons.

Both Bellator and the PFL at their weekend shows saw the public faces of the company, Scott Coker and Ray Sefo, acknowledge the talks of PFL buying Bellator. It’s definitely not a done deal but it’s serious enough that both sides are now acknowledging it. Such a deal would conclusively make PFL the No. 2 promotion in the world. Whether they would be kept separate or merged is unknown but we had heard of late that ESPN was interested in expanding its MMA coverage as far as aside from UFC.

Raw tonight is from the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland. Seth Rollins has an open challenge for the World heavyweight title a day before his title defense with Bron Breakker so they are pushing him as a fighting champion. Logan Paul is also on the show tonight. Trish Stratus faces Raquel Rodriguez in the final MITB qualifying match. Other bouts are Rhea Ripley vs. Natalya non-title, Matt Riddle vs. Ludvig Kaiser and Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Bronson Reed. They had more than 10,000 tickets out as of earlier today and keep in mind the last time in the market they did 5,600 for a Raw in December. Breakker is in Cleveland so expect him on the show to build things up for tomorrow. Tommaso Ciampa is also backstage.

Naomichi Marufuji will be holding a press conference today. We don’t know past it is supposed to be something significant.

Because today is the Juneteenth holiday, Nielsen ratings are delayed this week. The Friday numbers, normally in today, will be out tomorrow. Fast Nationals do indicate a big number for Smackdown. The Collision debut ratings will be out Wednesday morning and the Raw rating will be out Wednesday at just after 4 p.m. Eastern.

Now that people know what Collision is and that C.M. Punk is on it, tickets have moved very well since Saturday in several markets. Toronto for this coming week has topped 3,000 which I wouldn’t call good, but was great considering where it was two weeks ago. Hamilton for next week moved more than 600 tickets since doing a low-price ticket offer and is near 1,500 which isn’t good considering it’s an NBA sized building, but it was only 800 a few days ago. But the cheap four pack is no longer available even though they’ve got a ton of tickets they can move.

Regarding TSN in Canada and airing AEW Rampage and Collision, Paul Fontaine noted that when Rampage was in Canada, it was aired on TSN television (usually it’s only streaming). So he suspects that could be why the 6/30 Rampage (taped in Hamilton) will air on TSN television and why Collision airs live from Toronto this coming Saturday on TSN 5.

Wednesday’s Dynamite show has a chance to sellout Wintrust Arena in Chicago. It may fall a little short but it is at the 6,000 mark and 7,000 is a sellout.

The C.M. Punk promo did 1.1 million views which would be the largest for an AEW segment in a long time, although the Chris Jericho-Sting faceoff did 888,000, also very large for that.

WWE is pushing this week as 25 years of Edge, who made his debut match on Raw on June 22, 1998.

WWE’s Samantha Irvin sang the national anthem before the Red Sox vs. Yankees game last night in Boston. They noted you could see her every Monday night on Raw. She lives in New Bedford, MA. Correspondent Arya Witner said she showed an amazing singing voice.

The full card for tomorrow’s NXT Gold Rush is Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker for the NXT title, Edris Enofe & Malik Blade vs. Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen vs. Hank Walker & Tank Ledger for the tag title, Wes Lee vs. Tyler Bate for the North American title with Mustafa Ali as referee, Cora Jade vs Dana Brooke, Valentina Feroz & Yulisa Leon vs. Lash Legend & Jakara Jackson plus a Chase U pep rally for Thea Hail (who faces Tiffany Stratton for the women’s tile next week and Carmelo Hayes and Baron Corbin have a face-to-face to set up their match for next week.

A lot of notes on today in history. Today is the 21st anniversary of the first Impact event. It would have been the 85th birthday of Wahoo McDaniel. Yesterday would have been the 77th birthday of Bruiser Brody, who the Best Brawler award is named after.

New York State Senator Tim Kennedy has introduced a bill looking at reviewing the athletic commission bylaws for pro wrestling, and hoping to have it regulated differently than boxing and MMA.

Other Notes

Pro Wrestling Vision’s weekend shows in Sanford, DeBary and Orlando were canceled due to the arrest of Chasyn Rance, who runs the shows after being pulled over and it was serious enough that he was taken in. Team Vision Dojo sent a release claiming he was no driving under the influence but was driving aggressively to pass other drivers an there were no accidents and nobody was harmed. But they in the release said if Rance was drinking and driving it would be a strike on Rance and actions will be taken but that Rance messaged it was reckless driving and if that’s the case he will be back for teaching classes classes this week.

Defy runs Saturday in Portland, OR at the Wonder Ballroom with El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Komander, which basically means neither will be on the Collision/ROH tapings, plus Second Gear Crew vs. Bollywood Boyz in a street fight, Laredo Kid vs. Aramis vs. Gringo Loco and Vert Vixen & Viva Van vs Amira & Cat Power. they also run Saturday in Portland, OR with Bollywood Boyz vs. Juventud Guerrera & Matt Cross, Spike Trivet vs Artemis Spencer for the Progress world title and Vixen vs. Nicole Matthews vs. Session Moth Martina vs. Allie Katch for the women’s title,Charlie Crowley vs Gringo Loco and Schaff vs. Bryan Keith. They also run Sunday at 3 p.m. in Toronto before Forbidden Door.

MMA Mania reported that 58-year old Mark Coleman, who last fought in MMA 13 ears ago, will be fighting at a Celebrity Boxing show on 10/14 against Montell Griffin, 53, who was a very real boxer in his heyday with wins over James Toney and Roy Jones Jr (when beating Jones was a big thing still). As note is that both competed in the 1992 Olympics for the U.S., Coleman in wrestling and Griffin in boxing. As somebody who really likes Mark Coleman on a personal basis, this really saddens me.

Sunday Update

Bryan and I did our weekend show last night after Collision and will be back tomorrow night after Raw. Garrett and I also did our weekly show covering the news of the week.

We talked extensively about Collision on last night’s show. Collision was the No. 10 most searched topic on Google yesterday, although the number was listed was 20,000. That would seem to indicate a good rating. I expected a good number with the debut of a new show that has been promoted for a month and C.M. Punk’s return being heavily promoted as well. It’s more about the staying power past the novelty but all indications I had was interest in this show was high. I don’t know the cost, but getting Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting as the theme was cool as hell.

Regarding Punk’s interview, the key comment was the saying David Zaslov calling him “1 bill Phil” and the reference to the counterfeit Bucks, that line was approved by management. The 1 bill Phil line was taken by many as a reference to the supposed $1 billion deal that AEW was supposedly getting in a new five-year contract with WBD (Zaslov is the head of WBD). AEW and Tony Khan have been quiet on that story and all negotiation stories which is why I was surprised on television they would have a reference to that. It was ambiguous enough that you could just say it was a line in a promo.

The Young Bucks made a reference on Twitter just saying that if this was the old days there would already be a Counterfeit Bucks T-shirt at Pro Wrestling Tees.

No update on Jim Ross past him writing that he was going to take time away to heal.

Regarding the Bandido injury, which took place in the match with Konosuke Takeshita that aired on Rampage, it was described as a freak injury as he planed his hand to break his fall and his wrist broke. Whether he has surgery or not, which he said is likely to be determined tomorrow, he will be out of action for a while.

AEW has to release the entire undercard for Forbidden Door next week and also hard sell. The New Japan members haven’t been announced but their tour is over so everyone from New Japan on Forbidden Door would be available for Wednesday in Chicago as well as Saturday night in Toronto. None have been announced yet and if they do an angle with Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay in Chicago the reaction will be probably not be favorable to Omega while in Toronto it would likely be extremely favorable, but Toronto is Collision which is the show Omega normally wouldn’t work. It will be a very interesting week of match announcements and fan reactions.

For the week in Google searches, the only thing besides Collision from boxing or MMA or wrestling on the list was Conor McGregor at No. 5 on Thursday for the sexual assault allegation story.

TMZ had a video here that showed McGregor and the accuser at a club after the basketball game and after the claim he sexually assaulted her.

Local Ch. 10 has a report on this including some messages from the alleged victim, an interview with the attorney who made claims about how the police reacted and the basic insinuation from the police that the story wasn’t correct.

Smackdown on Friday in Lexington at Rupp Arena drew the largest gate in the history of pro wrestling in Kentucky. It was not close to the largest audience but still an all-time gate record is still notable.

After Collision went off the air, Dax Harwood said he gets a lot of crap for what he says and blamed it on being Punk’s best friend. He said it’s not Dynamite vs. Collision and it’s all AEW. CM Punk spoke up in support of LGBTQ and said that the ice cream bars he gave out from two years ago was to support trans youth and didn’t get ice cream bars this time because he thought everyone hated him. (thanks to Eric Krol)

WWE in Cincinnati with a rare Roman Reigns house show:

  • Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn b Finn Balor & Dominik Mysterio to keep the tag titles when Zayn pinned Mysterio
  • Austin Theory b Sheamus to keep the U.S. title
  • Bobby Lashley b Karrion Kross
  • Becky Lynch & Michin & Zelina Vega & Shotzi b Bayley & Iyo Sky & Chelsea Green & Zoe Stark when Lynch used the disarmer on on Green
  • Seth Rollins b Damien Priest to keep the world title
  • Chad Gable & Otis b Viking Raiders
  • Gunther won a three-way over Shinsuke Nakamura and Matt Riddle to keep the IC title beating Nakamura
  • Roman Reigns b Rey Mysterio to keep the Universal title. There was interference by Sikoa, Usos and Dominik Mysterio and Rey took out Dominik and got in the ring and Reigns speared him. (thanks to Shannon Walsh)

Two matches from Japan yesterday I was told to try and watch were Kento Miyahara & Yuma Aoyagi vs. Atsuki Aoyagi & Rising Hayato for the All Japan world tag titles and the Jake Lee vs. Takashi Sugiura match for the GHC title in NOAH.

The 6/30 Rampage will air on TSN 2 at 10 p.m. Rampage almost never airs on television in Canada. (thanks to Jeff Zinger)
