WWE stock rises following Vince McMahon retirement

Wall Street reacted to Vince McMahon’s retirement as WWE stock rose by more than eight percent on Monday.

WWE stock ended Monday at $71.81 per share, up 8.44 percent from what it closed at last Friday. The announcement of McMahon’s retirement was made on Friday after the stock market closed.

This is the highest point that WWE’s stock has been at since 2019.

WWE’s market capitalization (the value of all the company’s stock) is currently $5.34 billion.

The stock’s rise on Monday was driven by the belief that WWE is more likely to be sold following McMahon’s retirement. McMahon remains WWE’s majority shareholder after retiring from the company.

“This is a challenging environment with the equities of most of the logical buyers depressed, but there is demand for live event programming, and it is the first time that one could realistically think that WWE could be for sale,” media analyst Alan Gould of Loop Capital told Deadline. Gould listed Comcast, Disney, Amazon, Netflix, and Fox as potential buyers.

It was announced on Monday that Paul “Triple H” Levesque is WWE’s new head of creative. Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan are WWE’s new co-CEOs, and Stephanie is now WWE’s chairwoman.

WWE also announced in a regulatory statement on Monday that, due to “certain unrecorded expenses” by McMahon dating back to 2006, the company will be restating several financial statements from 2019, 2020, 2021, and the first quarter of 2022. The expenses total $14.6 million and will be paid back by McMahon.

  • Garrett and I will be doing a show later today. That should be fun. If you have any questions on today’s news, send it right now to [email protected] because we’ll be taping at around 8 p.m. Eastern. The subject matter will be today’s news.
  • The WWE letter to employees today read: “The Wall Street Journal has published a second story with expanded details on the initial WWE report last month. We want to reiterate that we and our Board of Directors take these allegations seriously. We’ve been cooperating fully with the investigation led by our Board of Directors and will continue to do so until its conclusion. Please note that upon is conclusion, WWE leadership will make itself available to answer any questions that you may have.”
  • WWE stock dropped today from $65.07 per share to $63.79. It was a decline but far from a collapse. A few notes about the women who got the $7.5 million payoff. That’s slightly less than the value of the 20-year contract Bret Hart signed that Vince tried to renege on. That’s more than Bruno Sammartino earned in his career as world champion in building the company. It’s just under double what WWE paid for all intellectual property rights and the tape collections of WCW and ECW combined.
  • Vince is at TV in Fort Worth. No word on if he will appear on the show.

  • WWE Smackdown tonight in Fort Worth (dark matches only)
  • NXT tonight in Dunellon, FL
  • WWE house show tomorrow night in Sacramento, CA
  • WWE house show tomorrow night in Bossier City (Shreveport), LA

  • Kevin Owens appeared on the NHL draft television show today. He came out as a surprise to Vancouver Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau, who is a big Owens fan. Redmond works regularly for both the NHL Network and for WWE hosting the post-Raw and post-Smackdown talk shows on Peacock. While on the show, Owens said he should be back in a few weeks.

  • Kevin Eck’s ROH news and notes column.
  • CWE announced notes on its next tour. Right now their tour throughout Canada for 10/17 to 11/9 is on, but obviously there are many things out of their control.  Vampiro has pulled out of the tour telling promoters he is shooting a movie internationally.  They still don’t know whether U.S. talent will be allowed in.  Shane Douglas, Vincent and Jimmy Jacobs are booked for the tour but they say they have enough talent to do the tour with all Canadian talent.  Robin Lekime and Lory are also off the tour due to issues with traveling and quarantining from Europe.  Norman Harass may be on the tour because his dates start later but it will be unlikely.  Manitoba and Alberta dates are on.  As far as Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Ontario, they don’t allow indoor gatherings of more than 50 people in some places, 30 in others and ten in others so without changes, those shows can’t take place.  But things can change.
  • Western Pro Wrestling in Australia announced it was closing. That was expected by those in the know in Australia. (thanks to Kevin Chiat)

FOX and ESPN are working together on tomorrow’s Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder heavyweight title fight. It’s been advertised like crazy by the two networks. FOX produced a four-part series to hype the fight, ESPN produced an E60. The promoters have said break-even on the fight is 850,000 PPV buys, with each fighter getting $28 million.

A correction from the current Observer. Ricky Knight Jr. is not the brother of Paige, but is the nephew of Paige and the son of Roy Knight. He’s only 19 years old and promoter Andy Quildan compared him to people like Will Ospreay, Zack Sabre Jr. and Marty Scurll at the same point in their careers.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw and the rest of the news, as well as talking question that you can send to [email protected]

The Super Bowl did 99.9 million viewers yesterday on FOX. If you include FOX Deportes, and streaming, the number will hit 102 million. It had 23 million searches while the halftime show had about 15 million more.  That makes the 11 million plus for Conor McGregor’s fight with Donald Cerrone even more impressive.

Several WWE and AEW personnel were at the Super Bowl between the FOX connection for WWE and the Khan family connection for AEW. There was a full page ad for AEW in the Super Bowl program. There were Super Bowl commercials that included Ric Flair, John Cena and Dwayne Johnson. FOX naturally promoted the XFL which those in the television world think will open to a big number but fall over the next two weeks to a more normalized number.

WWE stock continued to fall today, closing at $46.08 per share, the lowest close since before the FOX deal was signed. A big part of the drop was Benjamin Swinburne of Morgan Stanley downgrading the price target from $80 to $54, based on the firing of George Barrios and Michelle Wilson. He said the three things of concern are losing Barrios & Wilson leaves the company without senior leadership at the same time Vince McMahon is starting the XFL, concern about WWE’s capital allocation plans which was part of the dispute, and fear the loss of Wilson and Barrios will affect WWE’s relationships with Fox, Progressive Insurance (a key sponsor) and key talent. He felt the company will be pressured by Wall Street until they hire at least one well-known new executive with a strong track record.

For Raw tonight, there will be Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton interviews talking about Brock Lesnar. There is a Bobby Lashley vs. Seth Rollins vs. Ricochet match to determine who faces Lesnar at the 2/27 Saudi Arabia show, plus a Lana vs. Liv Morgan rematch.

If the stands don’t look full, it’s because a winter storm advisory was called for today in Salt Lake City and people are told to avoid driving until 10 p.m. tonight.  There were 211 auto accidents in Utah over a 13 hour period earlier in the day. Most, but not all schools were closed in the city. There were ten inches of snow at the airport which also delayed flights, but didn’t shut down the airport and talent should have all arrived.

AEW

  • Tomorrow’s Dark numbers will be most interesting with the addition of the Kenny Omega & Riho vs. Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford match from the Jericho Cruise.

Progress will run on 4/2 in the same building with Cara Noir, Paul Robinson, Kyle Fletcher, Spike Trviet, Jacob Fatu, Josef Samael, Anti Fun Police,The OJMO and Eddie Kingston.  wXw will run 4/4 with Bobby Gunns, Amale, Prince Ahura, Maggot, Jay Skillet, Absolute Andy, Avalanche, Jurn Simmons, Julian Pace, Leon van Gasteren, Lucky Kid and Alexander James.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

There really isn’t a lot more on Vince McMahon’s firing of co-Presidents Michelle Wilson and George Barrios yesterday. It came out of nowhere. Those in the company have no answers as to why. Stock insiders claim it was due to a disagreement regarding investing money into the company.  The profit margin for the fourth quarter and the year is at the low end of projections, and for the year, was down $20 million from the original guidance. WWE said yesterday that annual OIDBA will be around $180 million, at the beginning of the year they projected $200 million.  In October they changed that projection to from $180 million to $190 million. Keep in mind the original guidance for the year only had one Saudi show and no NXT television revenue worked in. Both did sell millions of dollars of WWE stock back in July. President of WWE is a tough position because everyone in it gets dumped, and even Vince’s own wife didn’t last in that position. It’s always said when you work too closely with Vince, and are not family, you are going to have a shelf life.

The stock closed today at $48.88 per share, down $13.42 per share from yesterday’s close. It’s an overreaction because the reality is the key TV deals are still in place for years and the company is idiot proof as far as making money for years. That said, Wall Street was stunned and a lot of questions regarding earnings being lower than expected were being asked. And Wall Street doesn’t even know about the house show cutback or the decline in the interest of the Rumble. Another big thing will be the network subscription number on 12/31 which will be announced in six days. It is possible it could fall below 1 million if it stays above 1 million, it will be a sign that putting NXT on television had no real effect on network numbers.  But that’s an if.

Analysis have had very divergent views of the stock. Morgan Stanley has just its projected price to $54, Evercore ISI to $50 and Loop Capital to $50.  But MKM Partners still lists a projected price of $92.

WWE announced that Frank Riddick III, who will be the interim CFO until they find a permanent person for the spot, will be paid $33,333.33 per week.

Bret Hart announced that he will be having surgery to remove basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

WWE

  • Roku and FOX are at a negotiations stalemate. Roku’s distribution deal ends tonight. Roku claims they have been unable to reach a new deal with FOX and FOX also declined an extension to the current deal.

UFC

  • Diego Sanchez was suspended for three months for testing positive for Ostarine and S-23 from a test that came back on 10/26.  That means his suspension is already over. Sanchez had one of his supplements tested and both substances showed up and thus his suspension was only three months instead of two years since that indicated inadvertent usage.
  • Similarly, Ovince Saint Preux tested positive for Ostarine and di-hydroxy-LGD-40-33 and two other drugs in an 11/1 test.  He submitted his supplements to be tested and they showed the supplements contained the banned substances. He also was given a three month suspension which is also now over.
  • Blagoi Ivanov vs. Augusto Sakai has been added to a 5/9 PPV show from Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Marion Reneau vs. Ketlen Vieira was also agreed to on the how according to an original report from MMA Junkie.
  • Cody Stamann vs. Raoni Barcelos is earmarked for the 3/28 show in Columbus, OH.

AEW

  • Riho and other women from Stardom were on this week’s episode of S.W.A.T. on CBS. The team had to go to Japan to transfer a prisoner who escaped and Riho played the prisoner’s girlfriend. She played a wrestler and there were wrestling scenes in the show.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Mistico will be out two to three months after surgery to remove a screw that came loose stemming from a 2014 surgery when he broke his leg. Doctors put a rod in his leg to help heal it and one of the screws became loose. They had been building a Mistico vs. Gran Guerrero big match that will have to be put on hold.
  • Defy has its third anniversary show tonight in Seattle at Washington Hall with the Jurassic Express from AEW, The Strong Hearts form AEW, Killer Crown, plus Schaff vs. Artemis Spencer in a ladder match and Josef Samael & Jacob Fatu vs. The Amerikan Gunz in a tag team title match.
  • Impact announced that there will be an Ultimate X match on its 4/3 show in Ybor City, FL.
  • CWO on 2/9, 2/17 and 3/12 at The Rockpile Bar & Nightclub in Toronto.
  • All Star Wrestling on 2/29 in Vancouver, BGC at the Maritime Labour Centre.
  • Combate Americas on 2/21 in Mexicali, Baja California which will air on Univision, Univision Deportes, AXS in the U.S. and Televisa 5 in Mexico.  The main event has Rafa Garcia (11-0) vs. Humberto Bandenay (18-7, 1 no contest) for their lightweight title, plus Yasmine Jauregui (4-0) vs. Karen Cadillo (4-1).
  • River City Wrestling on 2/8 in San Antonio at The Grand Event Center.
  • 559 Fights on 2/8 in Orange Cove, CA at the Community Center will crown a middleweight champion with Jared Velasquez (4-3) of Orange Cove against A.J. Perez (3-1) of Fresno.

WWE stock prices climb to record high following TV rights rumors

After rumors surfaced Wednesday night that NBCUniversal wants to bring back Raw to USA Network at three times the current contract value, WWE’s stock value hit record highs Thursday.

As of 1 PM Eastern, the stock was trading at $50.21 a share, up from $43.60 at the close of business Wednesday and good for a near 15% increase. Earlier Thursday, they crested past $51 a share, their record high.

The company’s TV contract is up next year and the Hollywood Reporter reported that NBCU wants to bring back Raw for nearly three times what they currently receive while choosing to not renew SmackDown. Fox has been rumored to also be a suitor for WWE programming, opening up the possibility of bringing the Tuesday night show to Fox Sports One. They could still be interested in Raw for the Fox network depending on the cost.

WWE hasn’t commented publicly on any of the news.

Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel of Endeavor is negotiating both the WWE deal as well as the UFC TV contract.

Vince McMahon sells $100 million of WWE stock for Alpha Entertainment

In a move that could indicate a big step toward getting involved with professional football, WWE chairman Vince McMahon sold 3.34 million Class A common shares of company stock Thursday for what could be in the ballpark of $100+ million dollars.

As noted in the SEC filing, “Mr. McMahon executed the sale primarily to fund a separate entity from the Company, Alpha Entertainment LLC, which Mr. McMahon established to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football.  Mr. McMahon has informed the Company that he has no current plan to sell additional shares of the Company’s stock and that he intends to continue in his capacity as the Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for the foreseeable future.

“The shares sold by Mr. McMahon represent approximately 4.3% of the Company’s total outstanding shares of Class A and Class B common stock.  After the sale, Mr. McMahon beneficially owns 32,193,375 shares of the Company’s Class B common stock, which represents approximately 82.8% of the Company’s total voting power and approximately 41.8% of the Company’s total outstanding shares of common stock.”

After hours trading saw the stock drop to $30.80/share.

Over the weekend, it broke that McMahon could be looking to bring back the XFL and make the announcement as early as January which led to a further reveal about the creation of Alpha Entertainment.

Earlier this month, Alpha Entertainment applied for five new XFL trademarks that cover the league restarting and merchandise. Additionally, they would like to trademark ‘URFL’.
