Wednesday Update

WWE

  • TKO Group Holdings stock closed today at $87.91 per share, down 1.92 percent after yesterday’s 15.8 percent increase.
  • In an interview with CBS Sports, Cody Rhodes spoke about how he and Bullet Club/The Elite were able to change the pro wrestling world:
          • I think as I grow old I’ll probably wax poetic and grow even fonder of the things I was able to be a part of. The people I was able to team with. When we were a group, The Bullet Club, The Elite, the idea was to change the world. We really did actually change, at least, our world.
          • The reality is I can name about eight people. If one of them weren’t there it wouldn’t have happened. An alternative wouldn’t exist. It wouldn’t have spring-boarded me into the position I am now. All of these factors — and the biggest factor being the fans themselves.
  • Bleacher Report and ESPN also have interviews with Rhodes.
  • Rhodes reiterated that he isn’t worried about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson interrupting his story:
          • You mentioned ‘The Great One’ The Rock, nothing but respect for him. I went and saw ‘Jungle Cruise,’ I’m a Rock fan. I don’t think he’s the type that would come in and meddle with a story that’s been being told over the past two years. I think he’s probably up to something else, but you never know with WWE. I’ll be watching just like everybody else when I’m not wrestling.
  • The Rock told Fox News that he has no intention of running for president:
          • I’m honored. I’m not a politician, [I] never had the intentions to be a politician. As all this continues to take shape and form, and I get it, especially ramping up into this year in particular with an election year. I actually got approached by both parties. One after the other. I said, then, as I say now, ‘I’m honored, thank you. The most important thing I’m doing now is being a daddy to my little girls.’ I like school drop-offs, and I like pick-ups. I like that and I know if I were to ever go down that road, which I have no intention to, all that goes away, and I don’t want that to go away.
  • New Day’s Big E, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods reunited for an appearance on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon. Comedian Jay Pharoah was also a guest on the show.
  • TNT Sports in the United Kingdom interviewed Jey Uso.
  • Bianca Belair & Montez Ford appeared on the latest episode of First We Feast’s Snacked.
  • In a video for GQ Sports, Becky Lynch & Seth Rollins revealed the 10 things they can’t live without.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Samoa Joe offered some praise for Hook during an interview with WrestleZone:
          • What a tough kid. I mean of all the lambs that I’ve slaughtered lately that was by far the toughest sheep I’ve ever had encountered. Let’s be honest here. I mean, Hook is very young. He’s a very tough and very durable individual, incredibly strong for his size. I will admit that. But when it comes down to it, he’s the type of dangerous individual that I knew I needed to squash out immediately. You gotta go after the dangers in this world. And you know, he’s a very, very dangerous young man who’s still becoming the predator that someday he hopes to be. But I was more than happy to remind him of his place in the grander scheme of things and how the food chain works.
  • Shop AEW released a “Final Encounter” T-shirt for Sting’s last match at Revolution.
  • AEW shared a behind-the-scenes video with Roderick Strong, Matt Taven, and Mike Bennett embracing the Briscoe family backstage after the tribute to Jay Briscoe on last week’s Dynamite.
  • Eddie Kingston appeared on Going Ringside.
  • Rocky Romero will defend his MLW Middleweight title against Ichiban in a two-out-of-three falls match at MLW SuperFight in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 3.
  • MLW also announced Sami Callihan vs. AKIRA in a Death Machine Rules match for SuperFight. It’s an anything goes match.

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer radio, talking Raw, Frankie Edgar, Seth Rollins and taking your questions that you can send to [email protected]

Seth Rollins will address his knee injury tonight on Raw. He has a torn MCL and partially torn meniscus. Wrestlers do work on that all the time, but it’s obviously advisable not to. But it’s Mania season and people do matches with far worse, but again it’s not in their best interest long-term to do so. And there are title implications involved as well.

Giovanni Vinci was cleared from his concussion and returned over the weekend at house shows and will be wrestling tonight on Raw.

Raw tonight is from New Orleans. No NFL until the fall so Raw numbers should bounce back to pre football season levels and even higher with tonight’s show with the Rollins announcement and Punk/Rhodes segment. It should be No. 1 for the night most weeks on cable and remain the No. 1 cable entertainment program unless Vanderpump starts back up where it left off when it returns next Tuesday. C.M. Punk is on the show with a face-off with Cody Rhodes, there’s the Seth Rollins promo, plus Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest, Chad Gable vs. Ivar, Ivy Nile vs. Valhalla, New Day vs. Vinci & Ludvig Kaiser and Miz vs. Dominik Mysterio.

Less than 2,000 tickets have been sold for the AEW show in Savannah, GA on Wednesday even with what on paper is a unique series of matches.

Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway for the BMF title will take place at UFC 300 on 4/13 in Las Vegas.

Collision and UFC ratings from Saturday could take a real hit. The 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers game head-to-head on FOX was the most-watched television show on a Saturday night in the U.S. in nearly 30 years (since the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding skate-off at the Olympics). The show averaged 37.5 million viewers and peaked at 41 million. It’s the last Saturday night of the NFL Playoffs. For Collision, this coming week is likely not to do well against the Royal Rumble, but the competition, while never easy on sports-heavy Saturday nights, won’t be as bad starting 2/3.

New Japan at Korakuen Hall at 4:30 a.m. Eastern tomorrow morning:

  • Ryusuke Taguchi & Katsuya Murahama vs. Yoh & Shoma Kato
  • Great O’Khan & Henare & TJP & Francesco Akira & Callum Newman vs. David Finlay & Alex Coughlin & Gabe Kidd & Clark Connors & Drlla Moloney
  • El Phantasmo & Hikuleo & Jado vs. KENTA & Chase Owens & Taiji Ishimori
  • Kazuchika Okada & Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii & Tomoaki Honma vs. Zack Sabre Jr. & Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste & Kosei Fujita
  • Tama Tonga & Shota Umino & Togi Makabe vs. Evil & Ren Narita & Yujiro Takahashi
  • Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji & Hiromu Takahashi & Bushi vs. Sanada & Taichi & Yuya Uemura & Douki & Taka Michinoku
  • Master Wato vs. Sho
  • Desperado vs Yoshinobu Kanemaru for IWGP jr. title

This is Okada’s next-to-last Korakuen Hall show. He finishes up Wednesday at Korakuen with the Tanahashi & Okada & Ishii trios title defense against Nicholls & Haste & Fujita.

Rob Van Dam, Mike Bailey, Mistico, Masato Tanaka and the reuniting of Savio Vega & Jose Estrada Jr. & Huracan Castillo Jr. & Miguel Perez Jr. as Los Boricuas will be on the Mark Hitchcock Memorial Supershow on 4/5 in Philadelphia at the 2300 Arena.

This was something of a quiet weekend when it comes to major matches to see. Japan didn’t produce anything people were ratings that strongly. Mascara Dorada vs. Cavernario Barbaro from Friday at Arena Mexico would have been the best match but the finish was lame. We also had recommended the Claudio Castagnoli vs. Bryan Keith match from Thursday’s ROH show.

Kazuchika Okada teams with Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley vs. Moose & Brian Myers & Eddie Edwards in the Impact TV main Event on Thursday, plus Jordynne Grace vs. Trinity for the Knockouts title and Nic Nemeth vs. Zacharty Wentz.

The SportingPost.com lists these as the top ten fighters when it comes to value of their Instagram posts: 1. Conor McGregor; 2. Khabib Nurmagomedov; 3. Ronda Rousey; 4. Israel Adesanya; 5. Jon Jones; 6. George St-Pierre 7. Khamzat Chimaev; 8. Charles Oliveira; 9. Nate Diaz; 10. Francis Ngannou. As far as still active guys, Dustin Poirier is No, 12, Sean O’Malley No 14, Kamaru Uman No. 16, Max Holloway and Paddy Pimblett at No. 20.

Minoru Suzuki will be wrestling on the 2/29 MLW show at the Melrose Ballroom in New York.

Pro Wrestling Revolver on Thursday night in Dayton, OH at the Calumet Center has Jon Moxley vs. Gringo Loco, Jake Crist vs. Alex Shelley for both the Revolver world title and Remix title, tag champs Rickey Shane Page & Alex Colon defend against Steve Manders & Matt Justice, Zachary Wentz & Trey Miguel and the Grizzled Young Vetrans, Sami Calihan vs. JT Dunn last man sanding Steve Maclin vs. Mance Warner in a street fight, Ace Austin vs. Matthew Palmer, Jake Something vs. Masha Slamovich, a scramble match with Rich Swann, Myron Reed, Warhorse, Damian Chambers, Brett Oakley, and KC Jacobs and more. They also run 2/17 in Grand Prairie TX with Lio Rush vs. Chris Bey, Elijah (Elias) vs. Mike Bailey and Grizzled Young Veteran vs. Alex Zayne & Lance Archer.

West Coast Pro announced its women’s champion Takumi Iroha defends against Veny (the other Asuka) on Saturday night at the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco. The show also features the first U.S. appearance of The Crush Gals, the top women’s tag team in history, since 1986. They won’t be wrestling, just appearing.

Smackdown in Canada did its best rating since 10/27 on Friday as reported by Post Wrestling’s John Pollock.

WBD has rebranded its sports division TNT Sports, instead of Turner Sports or more recently WBD Sports since 2021. The TNT Sports name had already been used in Europe. Technically, AEW is listed as entertainment, not sports. It was listed as sports until 2022.

The New Day segment on the Drew Barrymore show aired today.

A video of the 40th anniversary of Hulk Hogan winning the WWF title from Iron Sheik will air on Raw tonight.

Sunday Update

Garrett and I did two shows over the weekend. Our Friday show covers Seth Rollins and Kazuchika Okada and the rest of the news in depth. Last night we had Ryan Frederick on and talked UFC 297, plus a lot more on Okada and Rollins, Gable Steveson, Collision, Randy Orton, Sean Strickland and a lot of other topics.

The only update we have regarding Seth Rollins is that he has to make a decision. The treatment he’s going to get for his injury and how it relates to time off, the championship and WrestleMania will all likely be addressed on Raw tomorrow night.

Dana White said that he thought Sean Strickland won the fight over Dricus du Plessis. He also said that he believes you should have to take the title from a champion, but it’s impossible to score fights with the current system and have that mentality. You have to score each round. If you score the fight as a whole you can give the champion the benefit of a very close fight, but once you are scoring rounds, it means the person who you believe actually won isn’t necessarily the person you scored to win because if you thought Strickland won or you through du Plessis didn’t do enough to win, you can’t erase a round you gave to du Plessis to make your card reflect that thought. Most people don’t realize this about current judging. Du Plessis won a split decision to win the middleweight title. White said after that even though he thought Strickland won, there wouldn’t be a rematch. The hope is du Plessis vs. Israel Adesanya next for the title. Du Plessis also challenged Adesanya after the win.

Regarding last night’s main event, Judge Derek Clearly had du Plessis winning rounds two, three and four and up 48-47. Judge Eric Colon had the same scores. Judge Sal D’Amato had du Plessis winning two and four and gave Strickland one, three and five and up 48-47. I had it the same as Clearly and Colon but felt round two was the close one that could have gone either way. Most had it the same, a split decision based on how you scored round two. What’s notable is that this fight was more exciting without anyone knowing the scores, although I feel the Japanese system of reading the scores out every round is far superior. Because going into round five people would have known du Plessis had the fight won unless he got a 10-8 round against him and even with Strickland winning five they would know he didn’t win. Legit nobody knew who would get the decision because it was that close. Media scores were 57-43 percent in favor of du Plessis.

In last night’s Chris Curtis vs. Marc-Andre Barriaut fight, most had it 29-28 for Curtis. But judge Derek Clearly had it 29-28 for Barriault and Eric Colon and Declan Woods had it 30-27 for Curtis. Media scores were 78% for Curtis and 22% for Barriault. Like nobody thought Curtis won all three rounds except two of the judges.

In the Google trends for the past week, the only reference to anything related to boxing, wrestling and MMA was last night’s UFC 297 which was No. 4 yesterday with 1 million searches. All three topics ahead were NFL playoff related.

Frankie Edgar was announced as the first inductee into the 2024 class of the UFC Hall of Fame. Even though that Hall of Fame also isn’t voted on, their inductions at least have more credibility than WWE, although they don’t have Frank Shamrock in.

Sportsbetting.ag has Du Plessis at -105 and Adesanya at -115 if that match happens.

Drake bet and lost $700,000 on Strickland last night.

Adele said that she thought the best movie of the year was “The Iron Claw.”

WWE house show results from last night in Montgomery, AL

  • A.J. Styles b Solo Sikoa
  • Jinder Mahal b Ricochet
  • Creeds b Gunther & Ludvig Kaiser
  • Nia Jax b Ivy Nile
  • Jey Uso b Damian Priest in a street fight
  • Omos b Akira Tozawa
  • Becky Lynch & Shotzi & Michin b Asuka & Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane
  • Cody Rhodes b Shinsuke Nakamura in a bullrope match

Seth Rollins was originally to headline and was then announced as being replaced by Randy Orton, but Orton wasn’t there either.

We’re looking for your thoughts on New Japan New Beginning in Nagoya from yesterday, you can leave a thumbs up, down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]. We’re also looking for reports on tonight’s WWE show in Jackson, MS, with results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

With no football tomorrow, Raw is expected to be way up in the ratings and the top show on cable, and maybe even overall tomorrow. The lineup right now has Cody Rhodes and C.M. Punk face-to-face, Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest, Chad Gable vs. Ivar, Miz vs. Dominik Mysterio and Ivy Nile vs. Valhalla.

There will be an 80s Wrestling Convention Fan Festival on 5/4 in Morristown, NJ at the Mennen Sports Arena. Among those appearing are Stan Hansen, Jake Roberts, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, JJ Dillon, Baby Doll, Demolition, Powers of Pain, Dan Spivey, Boris Zhukov, Slick, Tom Prichard, Tito Santana, Tony Garea, Scott McGhee, and Tony Atlas. Bill Apter will host. There will be a magazine Q&A with Bill Apter and George Napolitano.

Amazing Red vs. Mustafa Ali has been announced for the 4/5 Wrestling Revolver and House of Glory joint show at the Trinity Center for Urban Life in Philadelphia. It will stream on TrillerTV+.

Mace, Mansoor and Jack Victory were backstage at last night’s TNA tapings in Kissimmee, FL.

During the El Chiringuito Inside live broadcast of Real Madrid vs. Almeria, someone in the audience asked a question about the tribal chief. None of the announcers answering questions had a clue what they were talking about and the guy asking said he was WWE champion. They all rolled their seats and wondered what that had to do with anything. (thanks to Leonardo Mendez Toledo)

Today is the 42nd birthday of Go Shiozaki.

Empire State Wrestling on 3/15 in Niagara Falls, NY at the Frontier Fire Hall with an appearance by Demolition, plus Bill Colier vs. Gregory Iron.

There is a Go Fund Me to raise money for a funeral for Frank “Francisco Ciatso,” the longtime Florida-based wrestler who passed away

Also on the show are Alan Angels, Dave Dustra, Aaron Solo, Brooke Havook and Viva Van.

Jon Moxley vs. Gringo Loco headlines a Wrestling Revolver show on Thursday night that airs on Trlller +. There is also a first time ever match with Steve Maclin vs. Mance Warner plus Jake Something vs. Masha Slamovich, Ace Austin vs. Matthew Palmer and Sami Callihan vs. JT Dunn and the Grizzled Young Veterans.

Saturday Update

WWE

  • SmackDown averaged 2.36 million viewers in the overnight ratings last night, up from last week’s overnight average of 2.27 million. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.56.
  • Before SmackDown, Gable Steveson defeated Cameron Grimes in a dark match. The post-show dark matches were Cody Rhodes defeating Shinsuke Nakamura and Jey Uso defeating Finn Balor.
  • SmackDown took place from Rhodes’ hometown of Atlanta. He gave an off-air speech to the crowd stating that he’s the best man for the job to main event WrestleMania 40:
          • There is only one thing that makes me tired of coming home. The only thing that makes me tired when coming home is coming home empty-handed. I think we need to change that. I am not immune to all the news, everything that’s happening, what will happen, what won’t happen. All I can tell you is this. I’m the right man for the job. I’m the best man for the job. I’m heading into the Royal Rumble, I’m gonna go back-to-back, and I’m gonna bring a championship back home to Atlanta.
  • Tyler Bate spoke to the Metro about being called up to SmackDown and reuniting with Pete Dunne:
          • A lifetime of work was all coming together. We both put a lot of pressure on ourselves with where we come from in representing British wrestling, and the style of British wrestling.
          • Taking that to the main stage feels like a huge responsibility. But I feel like we’re both nailing it… [I was] super proud of how it went. It couldn’t have been more ideal for me.
  • WWE wished Karl Anderson a happy 44th birthday.
  • Kayden Carter & Katana Chance, The LWO, and Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits appeared on The SmackDown LowDown.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • While appearing on Busted Open Radio, Ric Flair explained the advice he gave to Powerhouse Hobbs after Dynamite’s Homecoming episode:
          • Hobbs is the guy I poked in the eye, right? He asked me what I thought, and I said, ‘Do you really want me to tell you?’ I spent a half hour with him after, showing him stuff that will make him better. Just little detail things. He’s got an incredible amount of talent, but sometimes the guys come along and they miss the difference between good and great. They learn how to do something spectacular, but they are fundamentally weak. I was just showing him, like an example, a better way to kick a guy that is down. Get him close to the ropes, grab the top rope where you help balance yourself, rather than trying to free kick somebody. If you can balance yourself, it looks like you’re stomping a mudhole in them, and they won’t feel it if you know what you’re doing. He’s too big of a guy and too impressive to be able to press slam and throw guys around and then throw a punch that wouldn’t break an egg, which wasn’t the case with the punch we’re talking about, I’m just giving an example.
  • Comicbook.com interviewed Jon Moxley.
  • Ricky Starks appeared as a guest on Gabby AF.
  • Hiroshi Tanahashi discussed Kazuchika Okada’s departure from NJPW:
          • I can only thank him for his continued contribution to New Japan over the past 12 years. Personally, I would have liked to have seen one more match with the new generation (Shota Umino, Ren Narita, Yota Tsuji, Yuya Uemura). However, if you look at it from Okada’s point of view, I can understand if he felt he did everything he could in New Japan. I want him to spread his wings wide around the world.
  • TNA Wrestling’s YouTube channel uploaded the full Will Ospreay vs. Josh Alexander match that aired on this week’s episode of Impact. It was a rematch of Ospreay and Alexander’s bout from last October.
  • Dave Meltzer tweeted about Ospreay vs. Alexander: “I knew this match was going to be great, but I didn’t know it would be this great. Don’t think we’ve ever opened a year with so many incredible matches, but of all of them, this one stood out”
  • Sportskeeda WrestleBinge asked Nic Nemeth if he’ll end up in AEW:
          • I am very focused on New Japan and TNA right now. Because I have seen a few different people on both of those rosters that I am blown away with. Not doing moves – being awesome at wrestling. Some of them have bigger names, and some of them don’t have a name that’s really well-known all over the world yet. And there’s a handful. There’s one or two in New Japan, and there’s five or six at TNA that I have been watching very closely – I famously don’t watch wrestling, but I have been following and going, ‘This person is one big break away from being the next up-and-coming thing. How can I help them, but also make the show awesome?’
          • I sit here, almost like an accountant, going over numbers and algorithms and stuff: ‘How can I make this a bigger deal? How can I make TNA one percent even better than it already is? Here’s how. Here’s what I should do. Here’s the way to go, and I’m gonna prove it to everybody.’
  • Ring the Belle has an interview with Ash by Elegance.
  • Mustafa Ali vs. Amazing Red has been announced for Wrestling Revolver & House of Glory’s co-promoted show in Philadelphia on Friday, April 5.

Friday Update

Garrett and I did a long show today talking Seth Rollins, WrestleMania, Okada, the San Jose show, and much more. We will also be back tomorrow night with a show after UFC, covering Collision and Smackdown and the rest of the news.

Regarding Kazuchika Okada, there is really nothing new to report not in the current issue past New Japan has made two changes. The trios title match with Okada & Hiroshi Tanahashi &Tomohiro Ishii vs. Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls & Kosei Fujita scheduled for 2/11 has been moved to this Wednesday at Korakuen Hall. On 2/11 in Osaka they will be doing the final Okada vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi match, 12 years after the match where Okada became a superstar in one night in beating Tanahashi for the IWGP title on February 12, 2012, in the same building in Osaka. We had a major discussion on today’s show about Okada, prospects in different groups and how he’s playing this.

Seth Rollins suffered a torn MCL and partially torn meniscus in Monday’s match with Jinder Mahal. As of this afternoon, Rollins vs. Punk was still scheduled for WrestleMania. I was told that is “the current plan” but obviously it depends on different factors as to if it could change. This was first reported by Figthful. Rollins has been pulled off all the house shows for the next month and will be replaced by Randy Orton.

While he was shaken up last Friday, Austin Theory did not suffer a concussion in the match with Carmelo Hayes. We had talked about concussion protocol midweek on the show but those in WWE say that was not correct and he is considered okay.

Smackdown tonight from Atlanta, which had more than 11,500 tickets out as of yesterday so should be sold out tonight:

  • Randy Orton vs. Solo Sikoa
  • Contract signing for the Orton, Roman Reigns, LA Knight and AJ Styles match at the Royal Rumble
  • The Kevin Owens show with Logan Paul
  • Butch & Tyler Bate vs. Pretty Deadly
  • Carlito & Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro vs. Santos Escobar & Humberto & Angel

Rampage tonight at 10 p.m. on TNT:

  • Chris Jericho vs. Matt Sydal
  • Penta vs. Anthony Henry
  • Kris Statlander vs. Queen Aminata
  • Jeff Hardy vs. Darby Allin – Match was said to have been wild

Regarding the next season of Dark Side of the Ring, someone affiliated with the show noted that besides the episodes we listed in the current issue for the season there will be episodes on Chris Colt, Terry Gordy and Earthquake John Tenta, but there will not be an episode this season on Kurt Angle.

UFC 297 is tomorrow from Toronto:

Vadim Nemkov has vacated the Bellator light heavyweight title. He is moving full-time to heavyweight.

KiLynn King said that she will be out for six to 12 months after suffering a torn ACL on an independent show on 12/17. She came off the ropes with a kick and landed badly and she needed help after the match. She will be undergoing surgery shortly.

An Adam Copeland open challenge has been added to Collision tomorrow night.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • Dakota Kai, who has been out of action since May due to a torn ACL, gave an update on her recovery:
          • I’m so sick of seeing people saying, ‘She can run and jump, but she’s not cleared still?’ No, that’s not how this works. Obviously, I can run and jump because I’ve been doing it for the last few months, but they have a set date for when you actually get cleared because I have to still do matches and they have to check all the boxes of when I’m actually cleared. I’m not going to be in a wheelchair for nine months and then suddenly stand up and go, ‘I’m cured.’ That’s not how it works.
          • I have been running. I have been jumping. Please stop with ‘she’s lying, she’s faking.’ Do you think it’s been my choice to not wrestle for nine months? Do you think it’s been my choice? No. I don’t know when the clear date is. Please stop asking me. Rehab is going great though. It’s definitely not long now.
  • Now going by the name Wren Sinclair, former NWA Women’s Tag Team Champion and AEW Dark wrestler Madi Wrenkowski made her NXT debut last night. Sinclair was an entrant in the 20-woman battle royal that took place on the episode. It was said that Sinclair was replacing the injured Cora Jade in the match.
  • JBL and Zelina Vega both made appearances on NXT. JBL gave Josh Briggs advice during a backstage segment, while Vega accompanied Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro for their Dusty Classic match against Duke Hudson & Riley Osborne.
  • Carlito spoke to the Daily Mail about the goals he has for his WWE return:
          • I just told them I was ready to come back full time, do as much as I can. I’ve got very few years left, so I want to take advantage of the years that I have left in this business.
          • I think I’m in a completely different space now. I know that I’m older, I know, I’m not what [I] used to be. But I know I still have a lot to give, there’s a lot in the tank. And I guess my goals now is to mix it up with the young guys and just help the next generation of wrestlers and the business as best as I can putting in my little input on it.
          • That’s kind of my goal, too, to elevate the other guys. We all know who Rey Mysterio is, and [Santos] Escobar seems to be on a path going up. So, any other members that come in, the new guys, that’s what I want to do, to elevate them and make them just as big as any other part of the LWO.
  • Carlito and Randy Orton are appearing on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
  • WWE uploaded a video with Mick Foley looking back at some of his greatest moments as Mankind.
  • Grayson Waller and LA Knight were guests on Sunrise in Australia. They also were on The Kyle & Jackie O Show.
  • Dexter Lumis turns 40 years old today.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • AEW paid tribute to Jay Briscoe (Jamin Pugh) on the one-year anniversary of his passing: “One year ago today we sadly lost Jamin Pugh. Known worldwide as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, capturing the ROH World Championship twice, and along with his brother Mark, dominated the tag team division winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship a record setting 13 times. #ReachForTheSky #DemBoys”
  • Samoa Joe spoke with Sports Illustrated ahead of his title defense against Hook on Dynamite tonight:
          • I’m very much looking forward to it. This typifies what I want to see during my reign–I want these first-time matchups with something at stake. Hook is quite the dynamic little athlete, and he’s been doing his best to make his case. His record speaks for itself, and we’re going to find out if he’s the truth or not.
  • ESPN and Bleacher Report also interviewed Joe.
  • AEW uploaded a promo with Hook building up tonight’s match.
  • Rush praised Mark Henry: “A true wrestler never stops learning, experience is available everywhere in #AEW and learning from people you respect is KEY. Mark Henry is ‘El Tio de la Faccion,’ the respected uncle you can always learn from and always willing to help us out. #LFI #AEWDynamite”
  • Will Ospreay thanked TNA Wrestling for allowing him to compete at the promotion’s TV tapings that took place on Sunday: “I will continue to publicly show my support & appreciation to @IMPACTWRESTLING roster, staff & crew. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the return & getting to finally call myself a TNA kid. All the best to that talented group & hopefully we can cross over again.”
  • Scott D’Amore responded to Ospreay: “Truly has been an honor and pleasure to have you in @IMPACTWRESTLING. You’re a class act and just all around a damn fine human being. What you and @Walking_Weapon do this Thursday on #TNAiMPACT will inspire a whole new generation. #TNAWrestling”
  • Booker T commented on The Young Bucks being the opponents for Sting’s final match:
          • I think those guys would be able to go out there and do it right. I mean, those guys, they can perform. I can’t take that away from The Bucks. Those guys do a bunch of stuff. They flip around and all that kind of stuff, but when it comes to working, those guys can actually work. I know they’re going to hear this and say where is this coming from and a lot of people may be saying where is this coming from. Those guys do a lot of stuff that I don’t agree with, but when it comes to going out there and working, dammit, they can work. They can flip around and get Sting over probably better than anybody else in that company for that one night.
  • A two-hour MLW Reload special will air on beIN Sports and MLW’s YouTube channel at 10 p.m. Eastern time this Saturday (January 20).
  • AEW wished Brodie Lee Jr. a happy birthday.
  • AEW’s new Rise to the Top mobile game is now available to download on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

This Week’s Retro Observer Newsletter

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be up tonight talking Raw and the rest of the latest wrestling news with Wrestling Observer Radio. We have a show from last night up on the site right now.

Brock Lesnar will be back on WWE television very soon.

Best wishes to Afa Anoa’i, the uncle of the Usos and Roman Reigns, who had two mild heart attacks over the weekend while being hospitalized for pneumonia. He was released from the hospital yesterday.

Cora Jade’s knee injury suffered Saturday night at the house show was believed by those in WWE to be a torn ACL.

Right now no update on whether Carmelo Hayes will be able to wrestle Tuesday. He and Trick Williams were to be a team in the Dusty Rhodes tournament and face Edris Enofe & Malik Blade tomorrow night, and no doubt creative had been worked into the match. Hayes was injured in his match Friday night on Smackdown with Austin Theory which was stopped due to injuries to both men.

Raw tonight is the final major show up against football so the ratings should bounce back next week. It goes up against the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Bucs wildcard playoff game on both ABC & ESPN. The combined audience should be the largest of the season, more than 30 million, so if Raw gets even an 0.42 it should be considered good. The show features Seth Rollins vs. Jinder Mahal for the world title, Damien Priest & Finn Balor vs. The Miz & R-Truth non-title, Dominik Mysterio & JD McDonagh vs. DIY plus the return of Gunther.

Because today is Martin Luther King Day, the ratings will be delayed with the Friday numbers (Smackdown did a strong number again) delayed until tomorrow. The Saturday and Monday numbers should be out Wednesday, and the Tuesday and Wednesday numbers should be out Thursday.

We’re looking for reports from tonight’s Raw show in North Little Rock, AR, with Main Event matches and anything else off television, as well as last night’s results from the house show in Rio Rancho, NM to [email protected]

We’re also doing weekend polls on NJPW Battle in the Valley and ROH Hard to Kill, thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

For Google searches, the only thing boxing, MMA or wrestling related over the past week was Saturday’s UFC show, which was No. 7 for the day (very high number since we’re in NFL playoffs and the Real Madrid vs. Barcelona game was big) at 200,000. It was UFC’s first show of the year but it was only on ESPN+ and was an Apex arena show and did what a WWE PPV does.

Peacock set its record for viewing with Saturday’s Chiefs vs. Dolphins wildcard playoff game with 23 million viewers. That’s not just on Peacock as it was on TV in the Kansas City and Miami areas and did a 45 rating in KansasCity and a 14.5 in Miami. It is being claimed that this was the largest audience in the history of streaming in the U.S. The key as it pertains to wrestling is that a lot of new people signed up for Peacock for this game and thus it would in theory boost the Royal Rumble viewing number.

Thursday on AXS will air two major matches. Will Ospreay vs. Josh Alexander airs on Impact, and the New Japan TV show will be an hour devoted to Kazuchika Okada vs. Bryan Danielson from the Tokyo Dome.

Trinity Fatu is expected to finish up with TNA at the tapings this coming weekend in Orlando, FL. She will then return to WWE.

Thanks to Jacob Pepper, Gerard Di Trolio and Michael Yoen for weekend show reports.

The matches not on the NJPW show that we’ve heard the most about this weekend was the NOAH main event with Kenoh vs. Go Shiozaki for the GHC title.

The Tai Tuivasa vs. Marcin Tybura heavyweight fight that was scheduled for 2/17 in Anaheim, CA on PPV, has been moved to 3/16 at the Apex Arena.

All of the matches at The Collecti shows in Philadelphia from 4/4 to 4/6 went on sale today with 20 percent off individual event ticket prices.

A horse named Tatanka won the fifth race Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Florida (thanks to Barry Werner)

Empire State Wrestling Frontier Freeze on Friday in Niagara Falls, NY at the Frontier Fire Hall features 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Channing Decker.

Stan Hansen will be appearing for AIW on 2/3 in Akron, OH at the Tadmore Shrine.

PBS in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area tomorrow will debut “Jesse Ventura Shocks the World,” a documentary about him winning the election as Governor of the state in 1998.

Gable Steveson is once again scheduled for Friday’s Smackdown show, but for a dark match. He’s been doing that the last two weeks.

Saturday Update

WWE

  • Afa the Wild Samoan posted a video on Facebook thanking everyone who is praying for him and has sent him love. Afa, who is recovering from pneumonia and two heart attacks, assured fans that he’s ok.
  • SmackDown averaged 2.27 million viewers in the overnight ratings last night, down slightly from last week’s overnight average of 2.33 million viewers. The rating in the 18-49 demo was a 0.6.
  • For the second straight week, Gable Steveson defeated Cedric Alexander in a dark match before SmackDown.
  • Cageside Seats asked Bayley about her reputation for being a selfless performer. Bayley responded:
          • I just think if it’s right for the division, if it’s right for a story, if this person deserves praise or deserves this spotlight… I’m gonna do it. I’m not a selfish person in that sense, because I’ve had many moments. I’ve had my time and I know I’ll get many more because this business is just a freaking rollercoaster. It all comes back around. And I’ve had people help me when I was nothing, and I’ll never forget that.
  • During an interview with TMZ Sports, Natalya discussed training with Jade Cargill:
          • With Jade, she said, ‘Hey, I would love to come and work with you.’ I was like, Oh my God, I would love that.’ When she came to the Dungeon, I absolutely love working with new women that come into WWE, it makes me so excited. I love her enthusiasm. I love how excited she is about jumping into this. I know she’s gone through a lot, her mom just passed away recently, so it’s a very hard time for her in her life. To give somebody that diversion and say, hey, in the near two decades of being in WWE for [TJ and myself], ‘Let’s all work together.’ I do believe we get stronger together and I’m excited about working with her in WWE. When I think about the people I’ve worked with at the beginning of their careers, I was one of Charlotte’s first big rivalries. I had the match with Charlotte at TakeOver 2014 and it’s one of my proudest moments in my career. Sometimes, you need somebody to believe in you. I believe in Jade, I think she’s going to be awesome. 2024, the way the women are being used right now, and the track we’re about to be on for 2024, starting with the Royal Rumble, we’re going to see a whole new era of women’s wrestling that is going to blow everybody away.
  • Becky Lynch is recording the audiobook for her memoir “Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl.” The book will be released on March 26.
  • WWE referee Jason Ayers revealed that he suffered a broken leg and will be sidelined for the next couple of months: “When they say ‘break a leg’ I don’t think this is what they meant. Looks like I’ll be on the sidelines for the next couple months!”
  • WWE remembered Shad Gaspard on what would have been his 43rd birthday.
  • Santos Escobar, Angel & Humberto, Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn, and Grayson Waller appeared on The SmackDown LowDown.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • CJ Perry shared the following update on her infected finger: “Today the surgeon told me she needs to see more blood or I’ll need second surgery. Thank you for your [love]”
  • Perry will find out next week if she needs to have the second surgery.
  • Ahead of tonight’s Hard to Kill PPV, TNA Wrestling uploaded a behind-the-scenes documentary on Final Resolution 2023, which was the final show of the Impact Wrestling era.
  • PWInsider reported that Ace Steel is in Las Vegas to work as a producer at Hard to Kill.
  • Alex Shelley, who is defending the TNA World Championship against Moose tonight, told Sports Illustrated that this is the most important show in company history:
          • It’s a familiar feeling. I was [an] integral component in the original TNA. And this is the most important show in the company’s history. I know you hear that a lot, but in this case, it’s entirely true. And the world title is our ultimate prize. We’re going to beat the sh– out of each other for it.
  • Ring the Belle interviewed Gail Kim.
  • ECW legend Sabu told Stories with Brisco & Bradshaw that he’s preparing to have his final match:
          • I’m hopefully setting up for my final match. I want to do a final match maybe in July or later… It’s probably going to be against Van Dam. I heard Van Dam say something that he wanted to have a barbed wire match for my last match. I said I would rather have a regular match. I want to have one of my better matches. The barbed wire match is a gimmick. The gimmick is my final match. That’s the gimmick.
  • Scott Garland (Scotty 2 Hotty) appeared on AEW Unrestricted this week.

Friday Update

Very busy weekend, especially tomorrow. No show with Garrett today and we will be doing a show tomorrow with Bryan covering Collision, Smackdown, New Japan in San Jose and the latest news. Will be back next week likely doing shows both Friday and Saturday with Garrett.

The new issue of the Wrestling Observer is up, both our 2023 Business Year in Review annual section plus the news and a biography of the late Killer Khan that we’ve already gotten some great feedback on.

Regarding tonight’s Smackdown in Lincoln, NE, there is a blizzard in the area and lots of flights have been canceled. Announced include Bianca Belair vs. Bayley, Grayson Waller vs. Cameron Grimes and Joaquin Wilde & Cruz del Toro vs. Humberto Carrillo & Angel Garza. More than 7,000 tickets were out for the show as of earlier today. If there are less people it is due to the blizzard. But generally speaking, wrestling fans turn out to live shows in blizzards when they already have tickets.

Regarding the press release that WBD put out for AEW, they noted total viewers up 3 percent from last year in quarter four, but last year didn’t include Collision. The four million viewer per week figure touted is a combination of everyone that tunes into Rampage, Collision and Dynamite both live and via DVR and watches at least one minute. The number is real but Raw this week under the same measurement would be more than 3 million and Smackdown more than 5 million.

Arena Coliseo in Monterrey, Mexico, a legendary building, is being demolished on Thursday. The Lutteroth family built the arena in 1955 to house pro wrestling in the city.

Arena Mexico tonight has another show built around the best matches of 2023 being rematched. The top bouts are Soberano Jr,. vs. Templario in a 2/3 fall rematch from January 6, 2023,and Tessa Blanchard vs. Zeuxis. Soberano, who will then fly to San Jose for tomorrow’s show, said he’s about 80 percent after being out with back problems just as his career looked to be skyrocketing.. He said he doesn’t need surgery but will need therapy for the next 8-10 weeks. Match to watch for tonight is Neon (one of the best newcomers in wrestling) & Max Sar & Brillante Jr. vs. Capitan Suicida & Fuego & Valiente Jr.

FTR & Daniel Garcia vs. House of Black has been added to Collision tomorrow night.

Rampage tonight on TNT:

  • Eddie Kingston vs. Wheeler Yuta for the Continental Crown
  • Swerve Strickland vs. Matt Sydal
  • Hikaru Shida vs. Queen Aminata
  • Matt Menard & Angelo Parker & Jake Hager vs. John Silver & Alex Reynolds & Evil Uno, managed by -1

Roman Reigns is not being advertised for the Backlash show on 5/4 in Paris, France. He’s right now only scheduled for two PPV events in the next four plus months.

Just a quick note regarding many of the readers here. Jay “Fowler” Dumont contacted me today just to say how incredible the support for him has been from this community. Many in the wrestling community fit in that category but the Observer community and people that nobody would know have been every bit if not more as supportive. I’m really proud of so many of you.

John Williams of ITV 4 in England announced that the 1/3 episode of Rampage that started at 11:50 p.m. was the most-watched AEW TV show since March 2021. He said it was the fourth highest rated AEW TV show in history. He didn’t give the numbers but we should have them in the next issue. There is no explanation for this other than it happened.

Tomorrow is a monster night with a New Japan PPV show from San Jose, three hours of AEW, the return of UFC and the rebranding of TNA.

For the weekend we will be doing polls on the Saturday night TNA Hard to Kill and NJPW Battle in the Valley, thumbs up, down or middle along with a best and worst match to

We’re looking for reports from these weekend shows:

  • Smackdown tonight in Lincoln, NE (dark matches only)
  • NXT tonight in Dade City, FL
  • Collision tomorrow in Norfolk, VA (anything not on televisino
  • WWE house show tomorrow in Las Cruces, NM
  • NXT house show tomorrow night in Fort Myers, FL
  • WWE house show Sunday in Rio Rancho, NM
  • TNA TV tapings Sunday in Las Vegas
  • We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

The New Japan show in San Jose is just about sold out. There was big movement over the last week once the card was announced.

UFC’s first show of the year is tomorrow in Las Vegas. The show airs 4-1 p.m. on ESPN+

  • Joshua Van (125.5) vs. Felipe Bunes (125.5)
  • Nikolas Motta (155.5) vs. Tom Nolan (155)
  • Westin Wilson (145.5) vs. Jean Silva (145.5)
  • Farid Basharat (136) vs. Taylor Lapilus (136)
  • Marcus McGhee (135.5) vs. Gaston Bolanos (135.5)
  • Matthew Semelsberger (170.5) vs. Preston Parsons (170.5)
  • Andrei Arlovski (247) vs. Waldo Cortes-Acosta (261.5)
  • Phil Hawkes (185) vs. Brunno Ferreira (185)
  • Ricky Simon (136) vs. Mario Bautista (135.5)
  • Jim Miller (155.5) vs. Gabriel Benitez (155)
  • Magomed Ankalaev (204.5) vs. Johnny Walker (205.5)
  • The Matteus Nicolau vs. Manel Kape semi-main event was canceled when Kape weighed in 3.5 pounds overweight. Kape said he missed weight because he was sick two weeks ago and Nicolau refused to agree to a catchweight fight. He said he’d have given Nicolau his entire purse if Nicolau would have accepted the fight..

Rose Namajunas vs. Amanda Ribas at 125 pounds will headline a 3/23 Fight Night show.

Randy Brown vs. Muslim Salikhov has been added to the 2/23 UFC show at the Apex in Las Vegas.

I don’t think people realize the emotion in the Will Ospreay vs.Kazuchika Okada match tomorrow in San Jose. Osprey’s career was basically made when he was picked to be Okada’s opponent for a a RevPro match in 2015 and Okada put in the word that got him a New Japan tour. He’s had his biggest and many of his best matches with Okada, and tomorrow may be the last time they wrestle for a long time.

Warrior Wrestling noted that its 3/1 Chicago show, Revolution Brewing, sold out in less than 30 minutes with Mustafa Ali vs. Trey Miguel as the main event.

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • New NXT signee Madi Wrenkowski appeared in the crowd on last night’s NXT episode as part of the Chase U student section. Wrenkowski could also be seen in a video posted by NXT Anonymous earlier in the day. Before signing with WWE, Wrenkowski was an NWA Women’s Tag Team Champion and had been featured on AEW Dark.
  • While appearing on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, LA Knight explained why he thinks the promo work he did during his feud with The Miz was some of the worst promo work he’s done in a while:
          • Miz was really bringing it to the point where like I remember a couple guys in the back just being like, ‘Wow, I feel like this is like the best work Miz has done in a while.’ Coincidentally, I felt like it was some of the worst work I’d done in a while. I hate pulling the curtain back a lot, but I’m not a good planner. I like to be off the cuff and I like to kind of just listen and react, but sometimes in these scenarios when you’re doing this, you have to plan a little bit more just because there’s so many moving parts and things like that and people want to know where you’re going and whatever. But in the past, other places I’ve worked, it’s just kind of, ‘Alright, well, we’re gonna go out there and we’re gonna generally talk about this.’ ‘Okay, cool.’ I’ll say some stuff, they’ll listen to me, and we’ll react and go back and forth. In this case, it was like, now I had kind of like planned canned stuff, but it’s like, I don’t know, whatever I’m thinking or saying at like three o’clock is not going to be the same stuff at eight o’clock, and so where I should have probably just dropped some of that stuff and just listened and reacted and just shot back that way, it was like, we got time, and I gotta hit the time, and they’re expecting this, so some of that I was just kind of like, Ah, this just doesn’t feel like my best.
          • That’s also I think, a bit of a process and still adapting because I’m still that old school, let’s go out and call it out there. Let’s go out there and do it on the fly, and let’s just kind of, you know, I’m gonna listen and react. I don’t want to know, and I don’t want you to know because I want it to be fresh. I want it to be real. Like, I don’t want you to already know what I’m going to say because then it’s like, ‘Okay, let me react. Let it be real and then that way, I can really digest what you’re saying to me, and then bring it back.’
          • At the same time, I think that feud in general, rivalry, whatever you want to call it. Some people hate the word feud. That in general I think helped elevate us both in certain ways because I mean, I think it brought out a passion in him because I think there are similarities between us even though I think we’re different, but we have some similarities to us. He was doing some great work, I feel like I was doing some great work, and at the same time, it was kind of like, showing a little bit of adversity because for so long, like I said, I was floundering and I wasn’t doing much and now it’s like, all of a sudden, now there’s a little bit of elevation. So okay, let’s show a little bit of adversity. Let’s show, here’s the guy who is established. He’s been there for a while. At the same time, I’m gonna get under his skin, he’s gonna get under my skin a little bit, but at the end of the day, I’m gonna kick his ass. So that’s really what it comes down to. So as long as that happens and we accomplish that, then we’re good.
  • Jinder Mahal, Michin, and Nick Aldis were guests on WWE’s The Bump this afternoon.
  • Though he didn’t directly address Tony Khan’s tweets from yesterday, Mahal did mention that he was trending all day on Twitter:
          • It was a great start to the new year until I was interrupted by The Rock. But nonetheless, this past week, was in the ring with Seth Rollins. Told him exactly how I feel, and now I’m number one contender to the World Heavyweight Champion. I was trending on Twitter all day yesterday [laughs]. Trending on Twitter all day yesterday. And somehow, again, the Modern Day Maharaja is the talk of the town.
  • Kayla Braxton will interview Randy Orton on The Bump next Wednesday. Carlito is also set to appear as a guest on the episode.

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • Fightful reports that several AEW wrestlers have been told that Queen Aminata is signed with AEW. It isn’t known whether it’s a full-time or per-appearance deal.
  • During his interview with Sports Illustrated, Samoa Joe named potential challengers he could face as AEW World Champion:
          • Kenny Omega, when he’s healthy, and Will Ospreay. Swerve Strickland and Hangman, they’re both waiting for me. The matchups we can do are infinite. The possibilities going into this year are wide and varied, and it’s going to be very fun.
  • Sports Illustrated also asked Joe about a potential matchup with Kazuchika Okada:
          • That’s another first-time, fresh matchup you won’t see anywhere else. He can come get it, too. That’s for anyone. If someone feels like they want it, then show up–and we’ll see what you’ve got. But if you come up lame, I will laugh in your face.
  • Orange Cassidy told Adrian Hernandez about the leadership Jon Moxley provides in AEW:
          • Jon Moxley is a leader for AEW. I think a lot of people look to Jon Moxley for leadership. I am too, like Jon Moxley, a person that leads by example and I saw the example that he was setting and I was like, ‘You know what? I want to do that.’ I tried, but no one can be Jon Moxley because there’s no Jon Moxley. I am forever in his debt for him changing and bringing up this version of me that is clearly a better version because I still have this thing (the AEW International Championship belt).
  • Denise Salcedo has interviews with Will Ospreay and KUSHIDA.
  • MuscleManMalcolm spoke with NJPW wrestler Gabe Kidd.
  • DJ Whoo Kid and AJ Francis (former WWE wrestler Top Dolla) will debut the music video for their song “WE OUT$IDE” during TNA Wrestling’s Hard to Kill pay-per-view this Saturday.
  • Mustafa Ali’s first post-WWE match is now available to watch on YouTube. The match was against Aigle Blanc for APC Catch in France.
  • The NWA announced four new matches for their Paranoia tapings in Fort Lauderdale, Florida this Saturday:
          • NWA World Women’s Champion Kenzie Paige defends against Tiffany Nieves
          • NWA World Women’s Tag Team Champions Pretty Empowered (Ella Envy & Kylie Paige) defend against King Bees (Charity King & Danni Bee)
          • Natalia Markova, Taylor Rising & Ruthie Jay vs. Miss Starr, Christi Jaynes & Missa Kate (the wrestler who scores the pinfall or submission earns an NWA World Women’s Championship shot)
          • Eric Smalls vs. Gustavo vs. Rolando

Monday Update

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about Raw, ratings, Houston wrestling, and the rest of the news tonight on Wrestling Observer radio.

Smackdown did its best ratings since September and Rampage since October. No college football was part of it. That’s not the only reason, particularly for Smackdown. But it’s certainly part of it. The Smackdown number was likely a combination of Dwayne Johnson on Raw and people expecting a Roman Reigns response, the three-way for the Rumble main event match and Logan Paul on the show.

Raw tonight is from Portland, OR. It goes head-to-head with the college football national championship game, Michigan vs Washington, on ESPN. For whatever reason, Raw usually doesn’t do badly against this game most years as compared to how it does against the NFL, even though the audience for this game beats most NFL audiences. The expectation is that ESPN will do one of the largest audiences in the history of cable television tonight for the game. C.M. Punk will be on the show and there will likely be curiosity from The Rock being on last week. Matches announced are Kayden Carter & Katana Chance defending the women’s tag title against Piper Niven & Chelsea Green, Cody Rhodes vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, Finn Balor vs. Tommaso Ciampa, Kofi Kingston vs. Ludvig Kaiser and The Miz vs. JD McDonagh. There will also be an R-Truth interview. R-Truth segments have done well on YouTube. More than 10,000 tickets were out and it was close to sold out. Next week is the final week of Raw going against football, as it will be against an NFL playoff game, so the “bounce back” show is 1/22.

Shane Emerson was promoted to AEW’s Vice President of Global Programming and Partnerships.

The Kenoh vs. Go Shiozaki GHC title match this coming Saturday will be the first time that title has been defended at Korakuen Hall in 14 months. For those keeping track, Saturday has the return of UFC, Collision & Battle of the Belts, the return of TNA on PPV, New Japan on PPV and all going against Miami vs. Kansas City in the NFL playoffs.

In an interview in Tokyo Sports, Katsuyori Shibata said he wished he had been able to thank New Japan fans befoe leaving, said he expects to finish his career in AEW, has trained with Bryan Danielson and said he still wants matches with Danielson and Hiroshi Tanahashi.

Dana White announced two major UFC fights last night. For UFC 299 on 3/9 in Miami it’s Dustin Poirier vs. Benoit Saint-Denis and for UFC 300 on 4/13 in Las Vegas it’s Charles Oliveira vs Arman Tsarukyan with the winner getting a shot at lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Sportsbetting.ag lists the bigger names as the underdog in both, as Benoit Saint-Denis is a -150 favorite and Tsarukyan is a -200 favorite.

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal predicted that Raw will wind up on Amazon Prime, but also listed FX as a possibility. He didn’t even bring up WBD. He also predicted that UFC and ESPN renew their deal. That deal makes sense for both of them. There is no better place for UFC than ESPN, and ESPN+ and in particular ESPN+ PPV has almost a need for UFC because nobody else produces regular PPV numbers streaming at the level of UFC.

Pat McAfee said that he doesn’t take back anything he said about ESPN exec Norby Williamson.

MLW announced tickets on sale for 2/3 in Philadelphia featuring the debut of Mistico, plus Saoshi Kojima, Jacob Fatu, Sami Callihan and Alex Kane. Matt Riddle will be in Japan on that date.

Sunday Update

Bryan and I will be up tonight covering the weekend wrestling news and taking questions that you can send to [email protected]. We’re looking for reports on these shows:

  • NXT from Friday night in Melbourne, FL
  • NXT from last night in Sebring, FL
  • WWE tonight in Wenatchee, WA

We’re looking for results, finishes and highlights to [email protected]

Because Collision wasn’t taped last week due to the PPV, in the U.K. airing this week and in international markets they aired a Best of 2023 show hosted by Renee Paquette and RJ City airing Bryan Danielson vs. Ricky Starks in a bullrope match from 9/23, FTR vs. Jay White & Juice Robinson in a 2/3 fall match from 7/15 (best match in show history), and Kris Statlander & Willow Nightingale vs. Mercedes Martinez & Diamante street fight from 12/16. The FTR match went almost an hour and thus they only needed three matches to fill the show (thanks to Stephen Lyon)

On last night’s show there were no teases for Mercedes Mone or for her appearing Wednesday in Jacksonville. What I know is that AEW does expect her to start on TV soon, but as noted, until it happens and the contract itself is signed, I wouldn’t consider anything 100 percent. One would think there would be some sort of a tease of a surprise if she was to appear, since that’s been the case with most major signings. But Sting’s original debut in Jacksonville came out of nowhere.

The Sting & Darby Allin vs. Konosuke Takeshita & Powerhouse Hobbs match for Wednesday is a tornado match and Ric Flair on his promo talked about being there in Sting’s corner.

The Tennessee Titans upset the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-20 today which knocked the Jaguars out of the playoffs that they seemed destined for a few weeks ago.

WWE from last night in Spokane, WA:

  • LA Knight b Jimmy Uso with the BFT. Solo Sikoa got involved. Knight said he was winning the title at the Royal Rumble
  • Julius Creed b JD McDonagh
  • Omos b Akira Tozawa. Same match they’ve been doing.
  • Becky Lynch & Shotzi & Bianca Belair b Asuka & Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane when Lynch pinned Asuka with the man handle slam. Lots of action.
  • Cody Rhodes b Shinsuke Nakamura in a street fight. A fan held up a sign and asked Rhodes if he would be his best man for his wedding. Rhodes asked if the fan had any felonies on his record and he said no. He asked how long you’ve been dating and the fan said two years. Rhodes said this would be a logistical nightmare but said he would do it.
  • Nia Jax b Ivy Nile with the annihilator
  • Randy Orton b Dominik Mysterio with the RKO
  • Seth Rollins b Drew McIntyre to keep the world title. The crowd was 50/50 at the start but McIntyre worked heel and got the people to cheer for Rollins to where it ended up closer to 80/20. He cut a promo playing a whiny heel saying everything he’s done is justified. Rollins won over two curb stomps (thanks to Stephen Heath and Dylan K)

Oregon State on Friday night set a state attendance record for amateur wrestling with 8,000 fans at Reser Stadium for a dual meet with Penn State. (thanks to Ashkon Nowtash)

The long-awaited movie on the life of Mayu Iwatani will be released in Japanese theaters on 5/17. The movie is the key reason she is the current IWGP women’s champion per Bushiroad decision making. Iwatani went from being a teenager who wouldn’t even leave her home to being one of the biggest women’s pro wrestling stars of the modern era in Japan.

Matt Striker apologized for comments he made last night during the Jacob Fatu vs. Matt Riddle match at the MLW show in Philadelphia. Striker said on the air, “Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. The court of public opinion would love to see Jacob Fatu slap the taste out of Matt Riddle’s mouth. But the court of public opinion does not convict, I’m sorry. I know it’s the world in which we live but, it’s not the case.” Striker then wrote this morning, “I’ve given this a lot of thought. Could not sleep. My critics are right. I was wrong. Tone deaf. Trying to use the guise of art or character portrayal is self preservation. Thank you to those that shone light on this. It is now on me to stand in that light. I will be better.”

For Riddle’s debut, we were told there were some boos for him but it was mostly dueling “Uce” and “Bro” chants. One person said it was a small amount at the start but never returned during the match and the crowd was hot with “bro” chants once the match started. Riddle’s debut with New Japan is this coming Saturday night in San Jose. Right now he’ll be doing indies, NJPW and MLW for the time being and will be on several NJPW tours in Japan this year including the next tour.

At last night’s show in Philadelphia, they announced Mistico vs. Averno on the 2/3 return at the 2300 Arena.

Oskar Leube and Yuto Nakashima of New Japan, who were announced as leaving on Friday, were announced for the 2/4 RevPro show in London. Leube will also be in the 16 Carat gold tournament in Oberhausen, Germany.

Raul Rosas Jr., the youngest UFC fighter, faces Ricky Turcios on the 2/24 show in Mexico City.

TNA announced dates on 3/22 and 3/23 in Philadelphia at the 2300 Arena. It’s notable that date and not Mania week. NJPW, which also usually runs Mania week, hasn’t yet announced anything for Philadelphia.

Besides New Japan, Nick Nemeth was announced for the 1/20 show for the WWC in Bayamon, PR, against island legend Ray Gonzalez. Also on the show Universal champion Intelecto Cinco Estrellas defends against Chris Masters and Caribbean champion Xavant defends against Matt Cardona, while Puerto Rican champion Gilbert faces Ryan Nemeth. The show will air on PPV from FITE (thanks to Michael Morales)

Raw tomorrow has Kofi Kingston vs. Ludvig Kaiser, JD McDonagh vs. The Miz, Cody Rhodes vs Shinsuke Nakamura, Finn Balor vs. Tommaso Ciampa and Katana Chance & Kayden Carter vs. Chelsea Green & Piper Niven for the women’s tag title. The game goes against the national championship college football game and CM Punk will be on the show.

Kurt Angle, who is under contract to WWE, did a video on the AEW angle with Stokely Hatahway trying to recruit Kris Statlander.

U.K. wrestler Sam Betts died on Saturday at the age of 91. He wrestled mostly under the name Dwight J. Ingleburgh, with the gimmick of being an American. He worked for many of the top promotions of the time. (thanks to Bradley Craig)

Tomoko Watanabe and Ai Houzan from Japan will be wrestling for West Coast Pro on 3/23 in San Francisco at the Irish Cultural Center. The special guest at the show will be Bull Nakano.

Mascara Dorada vs. Templario, which headlined Arena Mexico on Friday, will headline a 3/1 IWC Legacy show in Denver.

House of Glory from last night at the NYC Arena in New York: Encore Moore b JJ Boujji, Joey Silver won over Darren Richardson, Jay Armani and KC Navarro, Idris Jackson b Raheem Royal, Nolo Kitano b Gringo Loco, Carlos Ramirez b Krule, Midas Black & Jay Lyon d Chris Bey & Ace Austin over 20:00 (said to be really good), Mike Santana b Josh Alexander to keep the HOG title in another match reported as really good. Next show is 3/2 with the debut of Mustafa Ali.
