The Boys’ Brandon Tate says AEW pulled The Outrunners from indie show, rips Tony Khan

One half of former AEW/ROH tag team The Boys is claiming that Tony Khan and AEW pulled The Outrunners from an upcoming match and is not happy about how it went down.

Brandon Tate and brother Brent were set to face Turbo Floyd and Truth Magnum for Kentucky-based EEC on Sunday, September 28. However, Brandon took to Facebook to air his claims that Khan and AEW “had removed the opponents from our match.” The promotion announced Wednesday that the show has been canceled altogether.

“Not only are they causing issues to continue outside of AEW where we no longer work and our personal life, but effecting the independent promotion, wrestlers, fans and everyone involved or planned on attending the show next weekend,” he wrote.

The Tates and announcer Kevin Kelly filed a joint lawsuit against Khan and AEW in September 2024 with the brothers claiming defamation for comments Khan made on a media call about the duo where he said they no-showed events. This past June, a judge ordered the case to go to arbitration.

Announced on Monday, it was set to be the brothers’ first match since being released. They last competed in January 2024 as part of a Ring of Honor card.

“My brother and I have grinded for almost two years trying get our life back from the hole they left us in and were finally able to return to wrestling and make a little money for ourselves to try and bounce back. This dude has ruined over nearly two and a half decades of one of the best companies to ever exist in professional wrestling Ring of Honor and is now pulling talent from the independents just to get his way, but claiming his roster are “independent contractors”. I hope he realizes the company he once praised about changing wrestling for the better for EVERYONE is going completely backwards and this will one day all catch up to him,” he said.

EEC stated that “Due to no fault of their own but rather the guidelines within their obligation to AEW, the Outrunners have been informed they will be unable to perform in their scheduled match. This situation along with other prominent featured talent notifying us that they’ve double booked for this date have left us to make this challenging decision.”

AEW, Tony Khan and The Outrunners have not spoken publicly about the situation. It’s unclear if Tate’s comments could affect the aforementioned arbitration.

ESPN WWE Wrestlepalooza media call: Brock Lesnar, creative control, streaming questions

ESPN will have no creative control or jurisdiction over WWE talent as part of their five-year deal that kicks off this Saturday with Wrestlepalooza.

ESPN+ senior vice president JT Lasker and vice president of programming & acquisitions Matt Kenny were asked that question during a Wednesday media call with Kenny confirming they don’t have or want any say on creative.

He said their relationship in that regard is not dissimilar to relationships they have with other rights holders, acknowledging that the stick/glove/ball sports are different than combat sports.

“They retain creative control which, by the way, we are fine with. I don’t need to opine on what a script should be to WWE,” he said. “I think we’re excited about what they do, how they do it and we’re excited for Saturday.”

The question was tied into the inclusion of Brock Lesnar on the show given he was named in the still-ongoing lawsuit between Janel Grant, Vince McMahon and WWE.

Here’s some other highlights from the call that included a declaration that WWE & wrestling coverage would not be affected, and that there was no ulterior motive in running Wrestlepalooza on the same day as AEW All Out:

  • Wrestlepalooza will be part of the ESPN’s multi-view option, allowing fans to watch action alongside other ESPN live sports programming.
  • They are continuing to work out deals with various cable/streaming providers that ESPN airs on in order to give those subscribers access to ESPN Unlimited. It was said that “by the turn of the calendar year,” the “vast majority” of their existing ESPN subscriber base will have access to the service with the ultimate goal of turning “vast majority” into “all.”
  • As of now, deals with providers like Xfinity/Comcast and YouTube haven’t been completed while subscribers of DirectTV, Fubo, Spectrum, Hulu Live and Verizon FIOS do.
  • Asked about the future of WWE archive content, it was noted their deal is for PLEs which will be available on demand. They directed questions about the broader library to WWE.
  • They deferred questions about a Baseball Tonight or NFL Live-esque WWE coverage show, but said it’s a big deal for SportsCenter to be on site at Wrestlepalooza considering it’s a college football Saturday.
  • Just like with UFC, WWE will continue to handle all production.
  • Asked if any new PLEs will be added on the calendar and specifically in December that is absent of one, Kenny didn’t have any real answer as the relationship is still very, very news, saying, “anything on that will bear itself out.”
  • Asked about what metrics they are using to determine whether this relationship is a success, Lasker couldn’t share target numbers, but said they want to grow ESPN’s overall audience and attract new subscribers who might not subscribe in another way. They also want to create new value for existing subscribers.
  • Kenny said there is a “minimum threshold” of times when WWE PLEs will simulcast on ESPN’s linear networks. That will be determined in a collaboration between them and WWE that begins with the ESPN content strategy team to identify opportunities that exist within the massive amount of commitments with ESPN’s existing portfolio of rights. Kenny said it’s still very early in all of this, but acknowledged the simulcasts could end up being more beneficial which would result in a change in how they look at doing them.
  • Kenny was asked about the reaction internally to the WWE deal given what it is. He said he lived the same question when UFC was brought on and it’s a challenge to create advocacy within the company. He used the example of The Usos coming to their headquarters in Bristol Tuesday which was a short notice thing, announced internally with a sign on the door for employees coming in. Despite that, the demand was enormous with north of 250 employees wanting to get pictures and a line that had to be cut off, showing there is more of an interest and acknowledgment than some realize.

ESPN will have ‘church and state’ relationship with news coverage of WWE & other wrestling

For those concerned on how ESPN will cover WWE and/or pro wrestling in the future, two executives want to put those concerns to rest.

During a media call Wednesday to promote Saturday’s launch on the ESPN networks with Wrestlepalooza and specifically their new streaming platform, ESPN+ senior vice president JT Lasker and vice president of programming & acquisitions Matt Kenny were asked if those who report on wrestling will have “full independence” in how they do so.

Lasker answered, “I think the answer to that is an emphatic yes.” Kenny then followed up with “an unequivocal yes. That’s a separation of church and state. We have some PR folks on the call that can underscore that, but yes.”

On their website, WWE has a home right next to UFC on the main navigation that leads to a well-populated landing page. Under ‘More Sports,’ there is a ‘Professional Wrestling‘ section which has nearly all WWE content on there as well.

There is an AEW section within the wrestling area that leads to a very lightly populated page with an events schedule and listing of AEW World Champions. The last feature was from over 200 days ago.

ESPN addresses WWE Wrestlepalooza running against AEW All Out

With regard to WWE Wrestlepalooza running this Saturday against AEW All Out, wrestling competition had nothing to do with it, according to ESPN executives.

During a media call Wednesday to promote Saturday’s launch on the ESPN networks and specifically their new streaming platform, ESPN VP of programming and acquisitions Matt Kenny was asked about WWE choosing to run against a competitor and if that was a strategy for the future.

Kenny said they will work collaboratively with WWE on the schedule and in this case, many of WWE’s events had already been scheduled for the year. He said traditionally, ESPN would work with a partner as part of a lengthy process in scheduling dates (using UFC as an example), working together on a calendar.

ESPN’s PLE deal with WWE wasn’t supposed to start until April 2026 and it wasn’t until WWE negotiated with NBCU/Peacock (revealed in August) to get out early that ESPN was able to move the timetable up.

Kenny said ESPN wanted a marquee WWE event in September to help with the launch of the new streaming platform.

He mentioned during the call that they had no dialogue with Peacock and “we were excited when presented the option to start that relationship early.”

“Really, it had less to do with any particular wrestling competition. In fact, we take a holistic view. We know there is competition everywhere. Certainly in the fall on Saturdays…there’s no shortage of college football competition throughout the day. We welcome competition and do take a ‘game on’ approach. We are focused in this particular case to super-serve WWE and wrestling fans on our platforms,” he said.

TKO exec speaks on WWE’s future with NBC Universal

If TKO head Mark Shapiro has his way, WWE will remain on NBCUniversal for as long as the broadcaster wants them to.

As part of the media rounds ahead of Saturday’s WWE kickoff on the ESPN networks/streaming platform, Shapiro spoke to Puck’s John Ourand on his Varsity podcast.

In talking about the UFC media rights deal, Shapiro was discussing the benefits of having various TV partners. WWE then came up and in talking about ESPN and Netflix, he brought up Comcast (aka NBC Universal and said, “We’re not going to leave (NBCUniversal) as long as they want to be with us.”

The relationship between WWE and NBCU notably changed last month, bringing WWE PLEs to ESPN seven months earlier than contractually expected. Archive content will remain on the Peacock platform through the end of 2025 while NXT PLEs will remain through March 2026 as of now.

The changes also saw an adjustment to their Saturday Night’s Main Event broadcasts with the quarterly specials now airing exclusively on Peacock with SmackDown episodes available on the streamer 30 days after they initially air on USA.

During August’s Clash in Paris PLE, Michael Cole thanked Peacock to which NBC Sports president Rick Cordella replied with his own thanks to the WWE team for taking “a chance” with Peacock.

Following the official expiration of their initial Peacock deal this March, WWE’s lone remaining deal with NBCU expires in October 2029. SmackDown did initially begin airing on USA several weeks earlier than expected (September 13) and it’s unclear if the contract date changed with that move.

Andrade released by WWE, further details emerge

In a surprise move Saturday, Andrade was released by WWE, first reported by Fightful and later confirmed by our Dave Meltzer.

The outlet also noted it was not part of a mass group of cuts. Jon Alba later reported that he was released from the company and it was not a mutual decision. He has already been moved to their alumni section on WWE.com

The 35-year-old last wrestled alongside Rey Fenix at August’s SummerSlam in the six-way TLC match for the tag titles.

It was his second run in WWE after nearly three years in AEW. He returned at the January 2024 Royal Rumble and eventually won the Speed title, holding it for more than 160 days. His initial WWE run lasted from 2016-2020 and included an NXT title run and WWE United States title run.

He wrestled 62 times in his second go-round and was teaming with Fenix in recent months.

He thanked AEW head Tony Khan after his AEW run ended as their split didn’t appear to be acrimonious. It was reported AEW wanted to re-sign him, but he declined and instead chose to sign with WWE instead.

WWE Royal Rumble 2026 date revealed

The date for this January’s WWE Royal Rumble is now official.

Announced on Friday during an event to confirm that WrestleMania will head to Saudi Arabia in 2027, it was also revealed that the Rumble will take place on Saturday, January 31 in Riyadh.

A start time was not revealed, but is assumed to be beginning at an early start time for U.S. fans given past WWE shows in the country.

It will be the first-ever Rumble held outside North America and the first outside the United States since the inaugural one in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1988.

A discussion of the Rumble heading to Saudi Arabia was first revealed in May 2024 and later became more real this past January with the first report that the deal was done and then later confirmed.

WWE/TKO and the Saudis are currently in a partnership that began in 2018 with two annual events with the exception of 2020 and 2021 (one each). Events like the Greatest Royal Rumble, Crown Jewel, King & Queen of the Ring, Elimination Chamber, and Night of Champions have also been held in the country.

A date was not revealed for WrestleMania in 2027, but was said to be taking place during Riyadh Season which runs from October through March.

Change made to WWE x AAA Worlds Collide card

This story has been updated.

Two changes (one Thursday and one Friday) were made to tonight’s WWE x AAA Worlds Collide card in Las Vegas that will see Laredo Kid added to the show.

Initially revealed in WWE.com’s preview of the show, Laredo Kid was set to replace La Parka in an eight-man tag team match, joining Nino Hamburguesa, Octagon Jr. and Mascarita Sagrada against Cruz Del Toro, Joaquin Wilde, Lince Dorado & Mini Abismo Negro.

Then on Friday, the official preview changed again for the match. This time, Hamburguesa was out and La Parka was back in. Our Dave Meltzer is saying it was a visa issue for Hamburguesa.

An image of the original La Parka was included in the initial graphic for the match much to his surprise. He took to X to say he would not be on the show and preferred to stay in Mexico vs. wrestle for a “large company” in the U.S.

A third version of the character was introduced earlier this year and competed in the Copa Bardahl at August’s Triplemania.

Worlds Collide streams on WWE’s YouTube channel on Friday at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

WWE AAA Worlds Collide card | Friday, September 12

  • AAA Mega Champion El Hijo del Vikingo defends against Dominik Mysterio

Details on negotiations for megastar to be part of WWE WrestleMania in Saudi Arabia

With the impending announcement of WWE WrestleMania heading to Saudi Arabia for the first time ever in 2027 comes speculation of who could be part of the show given the large price tag TKO is getting for bringing it there.

Enter TKO Board member Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that those close to the Saudi Arabia General Entertainment Authority both confirmed the WrestleMania deal is official and “they claimed negotiations for Dwayne Johnson were advancing and they believed the deal was close to being finalized.”

While yet unconfirmed with anyone from WWE, “The impression is that the final payment number for the show will be affected by whether or not they get The Rock in the main event. The idea is that the individual payoff for Johnson would be multiple times that of any pro wrestler for any event in history.”

WWE is reportedly set to receive more than $100 million for the weekend of events.

The goal from the Saudi perspective seems to be either the 54-year-old Johnson vs. Cody Rhodes or Roman Reigns.

The official announcement is expected to take place in Las Vegas on Friday afternoon.

That isn’t the only major star WWE is trying to recruit for the event. Read this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter for more.

VIDEO: Wrestling icon makes surprise 2300 Arena debut after AEW Collision taping

Former AEW and WCW star Sting made his surprise 2300 Arena debut following Thursday’s AEW Collision taping in Philadelphia.

His appearance was part of a post-event tribute to Eddie Gilbert put on by AEW head Tony Khan that also saw Jeff Jarrett, Tommy Rich, and Eddie’s brother Doug Gilbert in attendance as well.

From our Dave Meltzer: “Eddie Gilbert was the guy who saw the potential in Sting before anyone else and was the architect of Sting’s babyface turn in the UWF just as the promotion was being sold to Jim Crockett.”

Gilbert was the booker for Eastern Championship Wrestling before he was fired by Tod Gordon, replaced by Paul Heyman, and the eventual creation of the Extreme Championship Wrestling brand. Heyman was a friend and protege of Gilbert.

After Doug, Jarrett and Rich came out talking about Eddie and the former ECW arena,

Khan called out Doug Gilbert, Eddie’s younger brother, who at one time was a star heel in Memphis. Gilbert talked about being the first person to jump out of the Eagle’s Nest in the arena and how Eddie was the King of Philadelphia.

Then, out came Sting who talked about Eddie and what he meant to his career. He asked the fans to chant “Hot Stuff” which led to Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” being played to end the night.

It’s unknown if the segment will be released on YouTube.

On X, Khan thanked the group for being there.

Update on AEW’s future plans for Australia

AEW has a plan in place to return to Australia for years to come.

Revealed on Wrestle Radio Australia earlier Thursday (seen below), the hosts noted that AEW had signed a five-year deal with TEG Sport last year to bring AEW action to the country. Based on the information provided, the deal will run through 2029. No other details were given.

A division of parent company TEG, the group “is responsible for helping major global brands break new markets in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom and the United States.”

Last month, the dates and locations were revealed for AEW’s Australia return: Saturday, February 14 at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena for a Grand Slam event and Sunday, February 15 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre for a House Rules event.

AEW debuted in Australia for one show this past February at the aforementioned BEC. At the time, it was AEW’s third-largest gate in company history at more than $1.3 million with an estimated 11,000-12,000 in attendance.
