VIDEO: Wrestling icon makes surprise 2300 Arena debut after AEW Collision taping

Former AEW and WCW star Sting made his surprise 2300 Arena debut following Thursday’s AEW Collision taping in Philadelphia.

His appearance was part of a post-event tribute to Eddie Gilbert put on by AEW head Tony Khan that also saw Jeff Jarrett, Tommy Rich, and Eddie’s brother Doug Gilbert in attendance as well.

From our Dave Meltzer: “Eddie Gilbert was the guy who saw the potential in Sting before anyone else and was the architect of Sting’s babyface turn in the UWF just as the promotion was being sold to Jim Crockett.”

Gilbert was the booker for Eastern Championship Wrestling before he was fired by Tod Gordon, replaced by Paul Heyman, and the eventual creation of the Extreme Championship Wrestling brand. Heyman was a friend and protege of Gilbert.

After Doug, Jarrett and Rich came out talking about Eddie and the former ECW arena,

Khan called out Doug Gilbert, Eddie’s younger brother, who at one time was a star heel in Memphis. Gilbert talked about being the first person to jump out of the Eagle’s Nest in the arena and how Eddie was the King of Philadelphia.

Then, out came Sting who talked about Eddie and what he meant to his career. He asked the fans to chant “Hot Stuff” which led to Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” being played to end the night.

It’s unknown if the segment will be released on YouTube.

On X, Khan thanked the group for being there.

  • Truth, Lies and Billy Jack Haynes: “An 80s wrestling star, Billy Jack Haynes’ life of violence and mystery leads to his current situation; behind bars and charged with the second degree murder of his wife.”

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Continental Wrestling’s self-destruction

You may have heard rave reviews about the time Eddie Gilbert and Paul Heyman came to book the newly-purchased Continental Wrestling Federation.

Today, we discuss the reality behind the mesmerized newsletters and why “The Road to Birmingham” ultimately self-destructed.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Marathon: Eddie Gilbert

For today’s July marathon show, host Karl Stern takes a look at one of the most conflicted minds in wrestling history, “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.

The son of Tommy Gilbert, Gilbert was a second generation wrestler, who patterned himself after Jerry Lawler and had a brilliant mind for the wrestling business.  Like many creative people however, he burned brightly but quickly, and died at the far too young age of 33.

Gilbert started out young in wrestling, writing articles and selling programs for the Memphis promotion before finally breaking into the wrestling business.  He spent some of his early career in the WWF being mentored by Bob Backlund before being seriously injured in a car accident in 1983.

Gilbert returned to the Memphis area where he began working on becoming the top heel in the promotion and had a great run for Bill Watt’s in the UWF managing a young Sting and Ultimate Warrior and Rick Steiner before coming into WCW to work and become involved in booking.

He was married to Missy Hyatt and briefly Medusa Micelli, all of this before his 30th birthday.

Eddie Gilbert and Paul Heyman also booked Continental Wrestling for a short time in what might have been the prototype for ECW had Gilbert remained with Paul Heyman for that era. However, he and Heyman had a falling out and Gilbert left before the genesis of ECW. Gilbert’s mind for the wrestling business was universally respected.

Karl takes a look at the special talent that was “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert on today’s edition of the July Classic Wrestling Marathon.
