WWE WrestleMania commercials reportedly airing during Super Bowl LVI

WWE will have a presence during Sunday’s Super Bowl LVI broadcast.

According to a PW Insider report, WWE told employees today that “multiple” commercials for WrestleMania 38 will air during the Super Bowl.

Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics reports that a 30-second spot will air during the pregame show, while a 15-second ad will air during the game itself.

This year’s Super Bowl airs on NBC and Peacock. Recent commercials for Peacock have highlighted WWE programming, but the report is unclear as to whether or not the ads on Sunday will be dedicated WWE WrestleMania commercials, or simply ads for the Peacock streaming service.

WWE’s most famous Super Bowl ad aired in 1999, but the company also aired a commercial during the 2000 Super Bowl.

WrestleMania 38 takes place on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Super Bowl LVI kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, February 13. The game will feature the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals, and will be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. SoFi Stadium is also scheduled to host WrestleMania 39 in 2023.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to make pre-game appearance at Super Bowl LVI

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be part of this year’s Super Bowl festivities.

The NFL has announced that Johnson will be making a “special pre-game appearance” at Super Bowl LVI this Sunday.

Johnson wrote about the news: “After all these years, my football dream of standing on the SUPER BOWL field has FINALLY….come true. This will [be] historic. This will be my honor. This will be ELECTRIFYING. I’ll see you THIS SUNDAY! LFG!!! #SuperBowlLVI #SuperGoldSunday 2/13 on @NBC”

What Johnson will be doing during the appearance hasn’t been revealed.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams are facing off in the Super Bowl. The game is airing on NBC and Peacock. NBC is also the television home of Johnson’s “Young Rock” series, which will have its season two premiere on Tuesday, March 15.

SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles is hosting the Super Bowl. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time, and pre-game coverage will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern.

WWE legend Dave Bautista is featured in Nissan’s Super Bowl commercial this year.

In 2020, Johnson appeared in the introduction video for Super Bowl LIV and introduced the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Raw and the rest of the news, as well as talking question that you can send to [email protected]

The Super Bowl did 99.9 million viewers yesterday on FOX. If you include FOX Deportes, and streaming, the number will hit 102 million. It had 23 million searches while the halftime show had about 15 million more.  That makes the 11 million plus for Conor McGregor’s fight with Donald Cerrone even more impressive.

Several WWE and AEW personnel were at the Super Bowl between the FOX connection for WWE and the Khan family connection for AEW. There was a full page ad for AEW in the Super Bowl program. There were Super Bowl commercials that included Ric Flair, John Cena and Dwayne Johnson. FOX naturally promoted the XFL which those in the television world think will open to a big number but fall over the next two weeks to a more normalized number.

WWE stock continued to fall today, closing at $46.08 per share, the lowest close since before the FOX deal was signed. A big part of the drop was Benjamin Swinburne of Morgan Stanley downgrading the price target from $80 to $54, based on the firing of George Barrios and Michelle Wilson. He said the three things of concern are losing Barrios & Wilson leaves the company without senior leadership at the same time Vince McMahon is starting the XFL, concern about WWE’s capital allocation plans which was part of the dispute, and fear the loss of Wilson and Barrios will affect WWE’s relationships with Fox, Progressive Insurance (a key sponsor) and key talent. He felt the company will be pressured by Wall Street until they hire at least one well-known new executive with a strong track record.

For Raw tonight, there will be Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton interviews talking about Brock Lesnar. There is a Bobby Lashley vs. Seth Rollins vs. Ricochet match to determine who faces Lesnar at the 2/27 Saudi Arabia show, plus a Lana vs. Liv Morgan rematch.

If the stands don’t look full, it’s because a winter storm advisory was called for today in Salt Lake City and people are told to avoid driving until 10 p.m. tonight.  There were 211 auto accidents in Utah over a 13 hour period earlier in the day. Most, but not all schools were closed in the city. There were ten inches of snow at the airport which also delayed flights, but didn’t shut down the airport and talent should have all arrived.

AEW

  • Tomorrow’s Dark numbers will be most interesting with the addition of the Kenny Omega & Riho vs. Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford match from the Jericho Cruise.
  • Doug Gilbert won’t be appearing Wednesday for the AEW show in Huntsville, AL. The area legends appearing on the show will be Austin Idol, Arn Anderson and Missy Hyatt.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Lance Archer has filed for a U.S. trademark on that name.
  • There is a Dragon Lee vs Bandido TV title match on the next ROH PPV show on 3/13 from Las Vegas. Their most recent singles match in the U.S., a few months ago for PWG, was one of the best matches in PWG history. It was one of the best live matches I’ve ever seen.
  • Evolve announced 4/3 and 4/4 shows in Tampa at the former Fort Homer Hesterly Armory.  Both shows will be at noon. Progress will run on 4/2 in the same building with Cara Noir, Paul Robinson, Kyle Fletcher, Spike Trviet, Jacob Fatu, Josef Samael, Anti Fun Police,The OJMO and Eddie Kingston.  wXw will run 4/4 with Bobby Gunns, Amale, Prince Ahura, Maggot, Jay Skillet, Absolute Andy, Avalanche, Jurn Simmons, Julian Pace, Leon van Gasteren, Lucky Kid and Alexander James.
  • WrestleCon has announced 11 new autograph signing guests for Mania week as Hiroshi Tanahashi, Booker T, Darby Allin, Ariane Andrew (Cameron), Barry Windham, Chris Masters, Missy Hyatt, Chase Owens, Stephan Bonnar and Cryme Time.
  • The belief is that Dragon Gate will be sending four wrestlers to MLW for an upcoming taping.  The two sides have been in talks since the fall and the deal was signed last week and announced on Saturday.  Ben K and Shun Skywalker will be one of the first wrestlers coming while Jacob Fatu will be going to Dragon Gate.
  • New Japan has three Korakuen Hall shows on New Japan World at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday morning. Thursday as a NEVER trios title match with Shingo Takagi & Evil & Bushi defending against Tomohiro Ishii & Hirooki Goto & Robbie Eagles.
  • Progress from yesterday in Cardiff, Wales:  Josh Holly b Thomas Winter, Chris Ridgeway b Elijah, Paul Robinson b Danny Jones to keep the Proteus title, Mark Andrews b Ilja Dragunov, Scotty Davis & Jordan Devlin kept the tag title over the No Fun Police, Jinny kept the women’s title in a three-way over Dani Luna and Gisele Shaw, Cara Noir kept the title beating Chris Brookes.

  • 559 Fights on 2/8 in Orange Cove, CA at the Victor Lopez Community Center.  There will be both MMA fights and grappling matches.
  • An update on Showcase TV in the UK.  It has disappeared from the Sky channel listings, which would leave ROH and a number of UK and US promotions off U.K. television on Sky.  Impact still airs on 5Star and Xplosion would not have a home. (thanks to Matthew Evans)
  • CWE on 2/27 in First Nation, Manitoba at the Glnew School Gym.  D-Lo Brown will be on the show.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Just utterly stunned by the death of Kobe Bryant earlier today.  He was one of the most iconic sports figures of this generation.

Bryan and I will be covering the Royal Rumble as well as the latest pro wrestling and MMA news tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio.  You can send questions to tonight’s show to [email protected]

Lots of the NXT women are in Houston presumably because there aren’t enough spots with the main roster women for the Battle Royal. We were told most of the key stars are there.  PW Insider reported Mercedes Martinez as one of them. As we’ve noted all along, Shayna Baszler was expected to be a key part. They also listed Molly Holly, Beth Phoenix and Sasha Banks in the women’s Rumble match.

Tons of rumors regarding tonight. While not confirmed, there is a lot of talk going around regarding Edge as a surprise for tonight’s show. That talk has been going on for months. Mike Johnson has reported that Santino Marella, Shane McMahon, Undertaker, Dominick Gutierrez, Ric Flair are all there and teased the idea of Sting being there to set up something for Saudi Arabia on 2/27. It was noted that it looks like they may have changed standards if Sting is cleared since both he and Edge had years back been flagged due to neck issues from ever taking another bump by WWE. No one has said anything about Ronda Rousey but if she’s coming back to Mania, this is usually right around the time you do so and they like surprises in the Rumble.

As far as Google trends for last night, Worlds Collide didn’t rank, nor would anyone expect that it would since NXT and AEW rarely do and this had less interest than either.  Among combat sports, the most interest was Bellator which was No. 12 with 100,000 searches. The UFC show was No. 18 with 50,000, which is low, but there wasn’t a lot of interest in last night’s show even though it drew great.

Killer Kross pulled out of his 2/15 date for NHPW in Perth, Australia and has been pulling out of all dates after the next few weeks. He had recently met with Paul Levesque and has told he’d be fast-tracked. (thanks to Kevin Chiat)

  • Regarding last night’s show when I brought up that Shaun Ryan may have done the videos that appeared, we were told that wasn’t the case and that the video work was done in Connecticut with the regular crew led by Jeremy Borash.

  • Jamie Hayter won the SWA title today on the Stardom show in Osaka beating Utami Hayashishita.  This was on The Kagetsu farewell to Stardom show. Kagetsu is promoting her own retirement show in Osaka on 2/24 where she faces Meiko Satomura.

The show is being pushed as Mexico vs. USA with a main event of Pablo Sabori (9-6)  of Mexico vs. Adrian Guzman (6-1) of the U.S. Given the ratings of Combate on Univision, there is no company that gets more out of lesser known talent and has deals with Univision, a strong U.S. station, and Televisa, the dominant station in Mexico.  Former Bellator champion Zoila Frausto (14-6) faces Karla Benitez (17-15-1-1, 1 no contest) of Spain.
  • Candice Michelle was brought to Australia for Wrestling Go in Sydney as a guest ring announcer for a women’s Battle royal.
