Terry Funk is alive, fine, and back home in Texas.
After making a speech on Saturday night at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia where he said he didn’t want to leave the ring (seen below) because it may be for the last time, the wrestling world was concerned about him. He noted after getting home that his daughter called up and jokingly asked him if he was dead because of all the stories.
Funk underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia on September 12th, and was supposed to be resting and in bed for a couple of weeks. But he didn’t want to miss his bookings for Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore shows on September 16th in St. James, NY, and September 17th in Philadelphia, so he got up at 4 a.m. on Friday, flew into LaGuardia Airport and appeared at the NY show.
After the show, he drove to Philadelphia, getting to sleep at about 4 a.m. that night.
He signed autographs all day at the convention in Philadelphia and was exhausted by the time it came to the Philly show that night. He was supposed to be in Dreamer’s corner for the main event against Matt Hardy, flanked by Senor Benjamin. Obviously, that would lead to a physical spot, and given he was coming off surgery, that would have been a bad idea.
He asked Dreamer if he could leave early as by that time he was exhausted. So, they did the interview segment early in the show and he caught a flight home.
There were reports he wasn’t feeling well, which had to do with the exhaustion and the fact he wasn’t physically ready for travel, but he didn’t want to miss a booking for Dreamer.
Funk joked that he’s got another appointment with his doctor in ten days to see if he could be cleared to get out of the house with the doctors having no idea he flew and traveled all weekend.

Figure Four Weekly, 9/12/2016: More on the Last Battle of Atlanta, wrestling Holy grails, and WWE’s video library – The release of the Last Battle of Atlanta on WWE Network, discussed here last week in advance of it dropping, was met with mixed reaction online. The namesake match itself, Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer in a cage (with a roof on top for the first time in wrestling history) had become legendary more due to magazine hype and the lack of available footage than anything else… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE
Chael Sonnen and Scott Coker had a press conference today to announce Sonnen’s signing with Bellator. Sonnen said that he thought he had signed a three-year deal for six fights, and Coker said that was pretty close. He mentioned he would fight any weight class asked and brought up potential fights with Rory MacDonald at 185, Tito Ortiz and Liam McGeary at 205 and Fedor Emelianenko at heavyweight. He also brought up the idea of finally facing Wanderlei Silva. Sonnen said that he had figured he would return to UFC (he was released from his UFC contract a few years ago after a number of test violations) but that the idea of Bellator came to him and in three phone calls over the last few days they had a deal finalized. He will continue with both WSOF as a television announcer and ESPN covering MMA, and will be with Jonathan Coachman on ESPN for a segment very soon covering his signing. He claimed if he fails a drug test he would be fined 100 percent of his purse plus another $500,000 based on the contract he signed. Sonnen was pushing the idea that he’d be fighting first in California in November, which would in theory be the San Jose show that features Michael Chandler vs. Benson Henderson for the lightweight title.
As of last night the plan was for Katsuyori Shibata to still face Bobby Fish tomorrow for the Never Open weight title at Destruction in Tokyo, even though he is still injured. Shibata missed two shows this week and at first the injury was thought to put him out for a while, but he is still planning on doing the match.
Tyron Woodley announced that he would be facing Stephen Wonderboy Thompson in a welterweight title defense on 11/12 in Madison Square Garden, today on the UFC weigh-in show. Woodley previously had turned down Thompson saying he’d rather fight Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz, because he’d make more money on those fights.
For WWE this weekend, as noted from the lineups, there are separate Raw and Smackdown brand house shows for the first time since the split. Even though they are working injury angles on television, both Shinsuke Nakamura (NXT) and Chad Gable (Smackdown) are booked all weekend. Randy Orton is also booked to headline the Smackdown shows. John Cena is only working Tuesday night in Birmingham.
This story is aboutthe plight of fighters today, specifically Joe Warren who is in the semi-main event of Bellator 161 tonight, and is a former two-time champion, but still couldn’t get any sponsors.

Editor’s note: We originally wrote in the headline and image that Ron Bass had passed away. We apologize for the error.
Don Bass, a veteran who worked regularly from the early 70s until the end of the territorial era, passed away today due to cancer.
Details are sketchy but it is being reported that he just learned he had cancer a couple of weeks ago, although he had health issues for years. It is believed he was 69 or 70 years old.
Bass formed a tag team with Ronald Bass, as well as Bobby “No Class” Bass, in the Gulf Coast as The Bass Family with Ma Bass as their manager who used a loaded purse to interfere.
Bass’ greatest success came in the Tennessee and Gulf Coast areas. While he worked mostly as Don Bass, he worked under a ton of different guises under masks there as well as part of new version of The Assassins tag team, The A-Team, Fire & Flame and an incarnation of The Interns, not the same team that was huge in Tennessee years earlier.
During that era he regularly teamed with Roger Smith, who had teamed with Jody Hamilton in Georgia as The Assassins after the retirement of Tom Renesto. Under various names, the Bass & Smith combination won the Southern tag team championship four times in the Tennessee circuit.
Before teaming with Smith, his combination with Ron Bass held tag team titles in the Gulf Coast and Tennessee.

The two-year odyssey, odd being the key part of the word, of C.M. Punk to the UFC octagon saw the door shut and the clock strike midnight, not Eastern time, but Cinderella time.
In the end it was simple reality. Starting out at 36 with very limited training past some Jiu Jitsu classes from Rener Gracie, no great athletic gifts and a body beaten up by 15 years of pro wrestling was not going to be able to train for two years and be able to compete in the UFC.
Punk was taken right down by opponent Mickey Gall when he got aggressive trying to strike. Gall started landing hard punches as Punk’s ground defense was very limited against a far more experienced ground fighter. Gall went for a guillotine, but Punk escaped that. Gall got his back and went for a choke, gave it up and started landing a lot of punches. The second time he went for a choke, Punk escaped. The third time, Punk was submitted in 2:14.
Everyone knew that the first week of football season was going to take a bit out of the Raw ratings, but even in a worst case scenario, I don’t think anyone expected this.
The feeling was that Raw would struggle to top 3 million viewers, and fall under it some weeks, and probably start out in the 2.9 million viewer range, similar to how it did against the Olympics.
Last night’s Raw did 2.68 million viewers, barely beating out the 2.62 million for the July 4th show this year. Aside from that show, from a ratings standpoint this will probably be the lowest rated show since October 14, 1996, and that’s when it was going head-to-head with another wrestling show, major league playoffs and an NFL game.
The Steelers-Redskins game that went against most of Raw did 12.96 million viewers. The 49ers vs. Rams game that started at 10:12 p.m. did 10.25 million viewers.
There is at least a possibility that SmackDown tonight will beat Raw. Raw still beat SmackDown’s number last week, but most SmackDown shows have done roughly the same as Raw did last night.
The show started weak and steadily declined over the three hours.
The individual hours were:
8 p.m. 2.83 million viewers 9 p.m. 2.72 million viewers 10 p.m. 2.52 million viewers
Raw in Baltimore will be headlined by Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns. If Reigns wins, the main event at Clash of the Champions will become a three-way Universal title match with Owens vs. Seth Rollins vs. Reigns. If Reigns loses, the main event stays as Owens vs. Rollins. Expect most of the Clash card to be set up on tonight’s show. Also, it’s match five with Cesaro vs. Sheamus with Sheamus up 3-1, with Cesaro getting a win in London on Wednesday night.
This is first week Raw goes against the NFL with a doubleheader with the Washington Redskins vs. Pittsburgh Steelers at 7:10 p.m. Eastern followed by the Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers at 10:20 p.m.
The semifinals and finals of the cruiserweight classic will be part of a two-hour show live from Full Sail University at 8 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday with semifinals of Kota Ibushi vs. T.J. Perkins and Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Gran Metalik as the semifinals.
We’re looking for reports from the WWE Smackdown brand house show tonight in Fairfax, VA (A.J. Styles vs. John Cena for WWE title, Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler) as well as from Raw in Baltimore with dark matches, Superstars matches and anything else that wouldn’t be evident from the live show to [email protected].
For this weekend we’re doing polls on UFC 203 and the Smackdown brand PPV from Richmond, VA, with a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected].

Punk, steps into the cage in one of the biggest matches on the UFC 203 PPV card. While many people have tried to make analogies, using names like Brock Lesnar or James Toney, there is really nothing in UFC history really comparable to this. Vince McMahon was injured recently. WWE has confirmed that McMahon did get injured and in fact had surgery, but the nature of the injury and surgery are still unknown. The story going around in the company is Vince suffered a torn quad while squatting.
Alberto Del Rio did an interview with Mas Luchas claiming that he failed the WWE drug test because he was using legally prescribed testosterone replacement therapy. It’s not exactly a secret that WWE had banned all TRT usage years ago but may have amended that, but even when amended, even if prescribed by a doctor it has to be approved by the WWE’s own medical staff. He also said that Andrade Cien Almas wasn’t happy and wants to return to Mexico. He said the problem is that when you go from Mexico to WWE you have to learn English and also start from scratch and forget everything you know. He said Almas asked him if things get better when you make the main roster, and he said he told him that things get worse.

WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT
Not sure if this will be announced for Smackdown tomorrow, but they were discussing a Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler cage match today. It also could be for the PPV on 10/9 in Sacramento.
The WWE is now changing the names of the WWE women’s title and the WWE tag titles to the Raw women’s title and Raw tag titles, since the Smackdown women and tag titles are known by the TV show name.
For the first time I can ever recall, a WWE PPV failed to crack the No. 20 searches on its day in Google, so last night’s show in other words had the least amount of general public interest of any WWE PPV in years.
Miz and Ziggler’s opening spot last night was meant as a spoof of the C.M. Punk vs. Mickey Gall fight.

He said he wants to break the record for most title defenses in his weight division next before facing Dominick Cruz and again said he wants $2 million for a Cruz fight.

James Gallagher vs. Kirill Medvedovsky has been added to Bellator’s 11/10 show in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Steve Austin has become the subject of a lot of talk in the past week, with his various injuries, his probable, maybe almost assured dropping of the WWF title at SummerSlam and stories regarding him becoming harder to deal with. In addition, Austin has signed to become a regular for five consecutive episodes early next season on the CBS TV show “Nash Bridges” to reprise his Jake Cage character. The episodes will start the final week of October, and of course be part of the important November sweeps. Austin appeared on two episodes of the show last season playing the recurring role as a renegade cop, with the first episode leading Nash Bridges to its best finish ever in the Neilsen Prime time ratings. His major ratings magic somewhat wore off for the second appearance, which drew a rating slightly above what the show normally averaged.
WWE BACKLASH AT 7 P.M. EASTERN TIME ON THE WWE NETWORK
Tickets for tonight show were not selling well in Richmond. WWE has done a lot of papering of late. Hundreds of tickets were given out on the street yesterday in front of the comic con. There were also tickets being given away last night at popular bars and clubs.
*Dean Ambrose vs. A.J. Styles for WWE title – If nothing else, every A.J. Styles main event on a PPV you go in expecting a great match. It’s probably the time for the title change. When Smackdown was to get the contrived championship at first, Styles was to be the first champion so it would make sense to go with him. Styles is the 15-to-1 favorite right now.
*The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler for IC title – There was a late odds shift with Ziggler going from a more than 10-to-1 favorite to Miz becoming a 9-to-1 favorite so it would appear the finish of this match changed today. To me, it makes sense for Miz to retain, but it’s not like it matters either way.
*Nikki Bella vs. Natalya vs. Becky Lynch vs. Naomi vs. Carmella vs. Alexa Bliss in a six-way elimination match to create the first Smackdown women’s champion. Lynch is right now a -1050 favorite. With five falls, this match needs to go a decent amount of time. Normal booking patterns with Nikki beating laid out over and over again would in theory have Nikki as the favorite.
*Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley vs. Usos – This match determines who goes to the finals of the Smackdown tag team title tournament. The Usos are 17-to-1 favorites which makes sense. They already did Slater & Rhyno vs. Ryder & Rawley on Smackdown on Tuesday.
*Rawley & Ryder vs. Usos winner vs. Heath Slater & Rhyno to create new Smackdown tag team champions. Slater & Rhyno are -1050 to become the first champions.
This, at least on paper, is the weakest WWE PPV show of the year. It looks like little of note aside from a probable strong main event. It doesn’t feel like almost any interest either compared to a normal PPV show.
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Michael Elgin & Kushida vs. Tetsuya Naito & Seiya Sanada & Bushi
Raw will be Monday night from Baltimore. Smackdown will have a house show in Fairfax, VA on Monday night.
Smackdown will be Tuesday night from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter: September 12, 2016 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: CM Punk making UFC debut, PWG Battle of Los Angeles review, more – A 19-month journey will come to an end, or to a new beginning on 9/10 when Phil Brooks, better known as C.M. Punk, steps into the cage in one of the biggest matches on the UFC 203 PPV card. While many people have tried to make analogies, using names like Brock Lesnar or James Toney, there is really nothing in UFC history really comparable to this. It was a weird experiment that many had written off as a failure six months into the story… Subscribers click here to continue reading.

There were 1.2 million searches for UFC 203 yesterday, making it the most searched item on the Internet, ahead of Jaden Smith (1 million) and Tennessee football. One would have expected a number closer to 500,000 for a show like that.
It will be interesting to see if WWE has John Layfield make any cracks about C.M. Punk tonight. My guess is no, only because the talent was very supportive of him and would see it as low class, but it is Vince and Paul Levesque’s call at the end.
There were more pro wrestlers at last night’s UFC than probably any UFC show in history due to C.M. Punk. Among the names known that were there include Johnny Mundo & Taya, Matt Cross, Matt Sydal, Tyson Kidd, Noelle Foley, Chris Hero, Luke Harper, Cliff Compton and guys who I’m not certain were there but were interviewed there during the day included Alberto El Patron, Mark Henry and MVP. There were a ton of Midwestern independent guys there.
Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering the PPV show, more from UFC and TNA, plus taking your e-mail questions that you can send to [email protected]. We have a show up on the site right now covering last night’s UFC and previewing tonight’s show.

First round: Mickey Gall came out to “Hey Mickey” after all the controversy so Dana gave in on that. He said this was a great opportunity for me, he said people may say you’re a gimmicky fight but I’m no gimmick. He challenged Super Sage Northcutt next. That’s exactly who he should have called out. Exactly.
Punk’s right ear looks like hell. Punk said this was a hell of a mountain to climb. He said this doesn’t mean he’s going to stop believe it or not. Said Mickey was a hell of a fighter. Said this was the second best night of my life other than getting married. Life’s about falling down and getting up and said to believe in yourself. Sometimes the outcome won’t always be what you desire it to be but the true failure is not trying at all, This was the time of my life.
First round: Werdum came out with a flying side kick that landed to the chin which was one of the best moves of the fight. Wedrum went for takedown. Werdum tried a Jushin Liger koppo kick but that missed as well. Werdum looks so slow. Browne suffered a dislocated finger and popped it back in. The dislocation came from a punch. The referee went to stop the fight as an injury time out which makes no sense. The fight should have been stopped. They all argued about whether to allow the fight to continue and they let it continue. Werdum with a body kick. Werdum is now landing. Werdum landing all kinds of punches. Browne actually landed some punches. Werdum with a spin kick to the body. Browne landed a left. Another left by Browne. Low kick by Werdum. Brown landed a right. Front kick by Werdum. Third round: Browne with low kick and another. Werdum with a low kick. Werdum tried a takedown but Brown easily blocked it. Side kick by Werdum. Werdum landing punches. Werdum landing more pucnhes and knees. Browne with high kicks. Right by Browne. Browne landed a right. Werdum dropped down for a takedown that didn’t come close. Werdum landed a right. Left by Werdum. The crowd is booing this like crazy. It’s really bad fight with both looking slow and doing little aside from Werdum having him in trouble late. Werdum 30-26
Wedum started mocking the fans booing. Werdum threw a kick at Edmond Tarverdyan (Browne’s trainer) when Tarverdayn started mouthing off to him. There’s going to be trouble for that. It was broken up quickly. Bruce Buffer went to calm Werdum down. Werdum’s corner was hot as well.
Scores: 29-28, 29-27 and 30-27 for Werdum.

Body kick by Miocic. Miocic landing several punches. Miocic took him down and is pounding on him. Miocic finished him with punches on the ground. Overeem was out after a series of punches on the ground. That was a hell of a round. This is one of the biggest celebration pops in UFC history. Overeem was out cold. They tried to get him on the stool and he fell back down. 4:27
Miocic interview. Said Overeem kicked harder than he thought. Said he kicked hard as f***.
Overeem said Stipe was the better man today, he’s a great athlete and he came to fight. Overeem said that Miocic tapped from the guillotine and the ref didn’t see it. He said it’s a bummer. He said he’s the better fighter but he wasn’t the better fighter. They showed the replay and no tap and the fans booed the hell out of it. Now theyr’e going to look at it again. There was no tap. Overeem looked like the kid who lied and got caught red handed.
A freak accident has caused the cancellation of C.B. Dolloway vs. Francismar Barroso at tonight’s UFC 203 at Cleveland, OH, as Dolloway was injured in an elevator accident at the host hotel.
Dollaway suffered a back injury at some point Friday afternoon when the elevator dropped several floors and then made an immediate stop due to malfunction.
The UFC released this statement:
“UFC announced that C.B. Dollaway has had to withdraw from his scheduled bout at UFC 203 due to an injury he suffered last night as a result of an elevator accident at a hotel in Cleveland. UFC officials have been in communication with hotel management, and the hotel is currently evaluating and investigating issues surrounding the incident.”
The Jason Gonzalez vs. Drew Dober fight that was scheduled to open the show has been moved to the FS1 prelims to replace the Dollaway vs. Barroso fight. The show will now begin at 7:30 PM EST with just one Fight Pass fight: Sean Spencer vs. Yancy Medeiros.
*********
While Robbie Lawler vs Donald Cerrone hadn’t formally been announced for UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden outside a Dana White radio interview, there was considerable excitment for the possible fight given both guy’s fighting styles.
However, fans will have to wait a bit longer as Lawler has pulled out of the fight, citing needing more time off to prepare after his knockout at the hands of Tyron Woodley. That new bit info comes from Ariel Helwani after TMZ first reported the news about the fight being scratched Friday night.
Eric Tovey, who was one of the most enduring stars in pro wrestling history under the name Lord Littlebrook, the kingpin of the old midget wrestling division, passed away today at the age of 87.
Tovey in is heyday was both the main booker of the division, working out of St. Joseph, MO, as well as the world champion and generally considered the best worker in the division’s history, although Sky Low Low was the biggest star and Little Beaver garnered more fame for being splashed by King Kong Bundy.
Tovey had health problems for a number of years and had been battling dementia. He had two sons who followed him into wrestling, Robert, who worked as Beautiful Bobby Dean, and Chris, who was known as the Karate Kid and Karate Chris Duby. In his later years, he often worked as a heel against his sons.
Born in England, he was an acrobatic small man, only four-foot-four, starting at the age of 14 in the circus. The circus went out of business while touring the U.S. in 1949. A friend suggested he try midget wrestling and he was one of the original midget wrestling stars in the 50s. He was trained under Jack Britton, the father of Gino Brito, out of his wrestling school in Detroit and settled in Ontario, but for most of his career was based in St. Joseph.
Besides training most of the midget stars that came after the 70s, where he also booked them, he also started the careers of people like Col. DeBeers, Butch Reed, Betty Niccoli Sato and Mike Geroge.
He worked a full schedule through 1980, often billed as the world midget champion. He slowed down from there as midget wrestling, which was more comedy based than any aspect of pro wrestling, started losing popularity, especially as the territories died.
He worked a mixed tag team match opposite Little Beaver at WrestleMania III in Pontiac, MI, in 1987, and wrestled at least at late as 1995. He worked in both WCW and WWF in the 80s, being the manager of a tag team called The Royal Family in WCW (Rip Morgan & Jack Victory), and later being a second for Harley Race in WWF.
While credited with being a great performer with good timing, there was a lot of bitterness because he’d take 30 percent of the pay of the midget talent as a booker.

There wasn’t much to the Alberto El Patron press conference in Mexico City.
It appears both sides have made a deal not to say anything bad about the other. Alberto noted that he was free to take bookings outside the U.S. and would be free in the U.S. shortly (end of the month). He said he had been bored and unhappy and was hated getting on planes for the show and wanted to spend more time with his family. He said he would limit himself to 60 dates per year, wrestle for two more years and then retire. He said he doesn’t want to sign a promotion, which is notable since both TNA and Lucha Underground want him, but I don’t think Lucha Underground would touch him if he was free to work for other promotions that have TV.
It’s interesting seeing he and Cody Rhodes try and book themselves as if they are above the politics and as legit independent contractors, as opposed to mythical independent contractors. Del Rio and brother Guillermo will be going to Norwich, England for a show against Zak & Roy Knight, the brothers of Paige for the Knight family’s WAW promotion. Del Rio talked about wrestling again at Arena Mexico. Both AAA and CMLL have had interest in him, as has TNA, New Japan and ROH.
Paige was there at the press conference but wouldn’t talk to any reporters.
According to those with direct knowledge of her situation, she was basically in the same situation A.J. Lee was on when C.M. Punk left. At one point this week it did appear she was gone, right now that isn’t the case, but it can change and the situation will be weird. The big difference is there is no legal action being taken against Alberto like there was against Punk.
If you want to know what CM Punk thinks about everything leading to UFC 203, he wrote a very good article about his thoughts and why he doesn’t miss being C.M. Punk in WWE.
Caristico is booked for both CMLL and Elite tonight at Arena Mexico and Arena Naucalpan. He did work Monday in Puebla for CMLL and is booked this coming week for CMLL, but he has not said anything publicly. One of the lead stories in the current Observer talks about the falling out between CMLL and Elite.

On the freedom wrestlers have in the Cruiserweight Classic that he felt after his first CWC match with Da Mack:
“It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. In 18 years, I had never been put in the ring and basically told just be yourself. It was the first time in two decades that’s ever happened. It was cool to go in there and what people got to see was just very raw, like pure, organic me. It showed because you can tell I’m having fun and it just felt a lot different. It opened up a lot of people’s perception of me.”
On getting to work with WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels at the last CWC tapings:
“It was good to be able to spend some time with him in a working environment where I could work with him on stuff from a philosophical point of view. It was great to get advice from him, to see how he operates and it’s incredible. It’s also encouraging because there’s a lot of like-minded philosophy and when that comes about, you get to a point where there’s no advice to be given because you guys are thinking on the same rhythm, then it encourages you because your education is better than you think it was. It was awesome to be in that environment. I wanted to tell him the whole time that my Mount Rushmore is your face four times (laughs)…or maybe three times and then Eddie (Guerrero) on the end. There’s not a lot of people that I would hold in the same regard. It was so cool that he’s in that environment and doing that. If you were to put people in tiers, he’s above every tier.”
On his matchup with Kota Ibushi in the Cruiserweight Classic finals and how big of a night it will be:
“We’ve never wrestled before and he’s amazing. He’s world class – an elite guy. It is the biggest situation I’ve ever been in mostly because it just seems unwinnable for a guy like me because he is who he is. It’s the biggest match I’ve been able to be a part of because of the social significance among wrestling fans.”
