Rey Mysterio issues WWE WrestleMania 40 challenge

Rey Mysterio has issued a challenge to Santos Escobar & Dominik Mysterio for a tag team bout at WWE WrestleMania 40.

In a segment on Friday’s SmackDown, Mysterio appeared alongside the LWO and declared his intention to face Escobar & his son Dominik in a tag team match at WrestleMania with a mystery partner.

Rey then revealed Dragon Lee as the newest member of the LWO, and as his planned partner for the WrestleMania contest, and the LWO brawled with Escobar’s Legado Del Fantasma.

WWE has yet to officially announce that tag bout for WrestleMania.

A faction warfare storyline between the LWO (Rey Mysterio, Dragon Lee, Carlito, Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, Zelina Vega) and Escobar’s Legado Del Fantasma (Escobar, Angel Garza, Humberto Carrillo, Elektra Lopez) got an added twist on last week’s SmackDown as Dominik seemingly temporarily aligned with Escobar’s group. Dominik is part of The Judgment Day faction on Raw, but was without a clear WrestleMania direction prior to his inclusion.

Following up on Friday’s segment, Vega vs. Lopez is set for next Friday’s SmackDown, the go-home show for WrestleMania 40.

Jade Cargill teaming with Bianca Belair & Naomi at WWE WrestleMania 40

Jade Cargill will make her WWE WrestleMania debut in a six-woman tag team match.

WWE announced following an angle at the close of Friday’s SmackDown that Cargill, Bianca Belair, & Naomi will face Damage CTRL’s Asuka, Kairi Sane, & Dakota Kai at WrestleMania 40 in a trios bout.

Belair defeating Kai in a singles match main evented Friday’s SmackDown, then Damage CTRL jumped Belair after the match. Naomi, then Cargill made the save, and the trios bout was officially announced on WWE’s digital channels by GM Nick Aldis:

Cargill made her first official appearance as a member of the SmackDown roster earlier in Friday’s episode, officially signing with the brand in an in-ring segment with Aldis.

After signing with WWE late last year, Cargill made her in-ring debut for the company in this year’s women’s Royal Rumble match in January.

Waller & Theory and Dunne & Bate qualified through a tournament that’s played out on SmackDown. Waller & Theory defeated The Street Profits to secure their spot in the ladder match. Dunne & Bate defeated Angel & Humberto.

There was an angle where The Street Profits were about to win their match against Waller & Theory, but Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford were distracted by the revelation that Bobby Lashley and B-Fab had been attacked backstage by Karrion Kross and Scarlett. Waller & Theory took advantage of the situation to win the match.

WWE teases Meek Mill performance for WrestleMania 40

WWE has teased a WrestleMania 40 performance from Grammy-nominated rapper Meek Mill.

A WrestleMania ad featuring Meek Mill aired during Monday’s Raw, and the artist posted the video to his social media channels with the comment:

Wrestlemania Philly about to be turnt turnt!!!!!

Meek Mill is a native of Philadelphia, the host city for WrestleMania 40 on Saturday, April 6 & Sunday, April 7. WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque quoted Meek Mill’s X post with the following comment:

Game on…the whole world’s on notice. @MeekMill #WrestleMania

Monday’s teaser follows a social media exchange between Meek Mill & Triple H on social media on Sunday where the rapper mentioned that his sons were hoping to attend WrestleMania, and Triple responded by telling Meek Mill to clear his schedule.

Meek Mill teased a performance of his Dreams and Nightmares song:

Triple h they want dreams and nightmares at wrestling!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meek Mill was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Back of my Mind in 2021, and nominated for Best Rap Album for Championships in 2019.

CM Punk announced as WWE WrestleMania 40 guest commentator

CM Punk is headed to WrestleMania as a guest commentator.

Punk announced during Monday’s WWE Raw episode that he will serve as special guest commentator for the Seth Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre World Heavyweight Championship match on night two of WrestleMania 40 on Sunday, April 7.

Making a special appearance on Monday’s Raw in Chicago, Punk, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, and Rollins’ WrestleMania challenger Drew McIntyre went more than 22 minutes in a segment setting up Punk as guest commentator for Rollins vs. McIntyre.

Punk teased hosting WrestleMania, teased being a guest referee for the World Heavyweight title match, taunted McIntyre for wearing “lifts in [his boots]” and “shoe polish” in his beard, dared McIntyre to name who had “chosen” McIntyre to be WWE’s “chosen one,” referenced Jim Cornette’s podcasts, name-dropped The Rock, and much more in the memorable segment before closing with a promise to make Rollins & McIntyre “interesting” with his WrestleMania commentary.

Rollins will defend his World Heavyweight title against McIntyre on night two of WrestleMania on Sunday, April 7 after teaming with Cody Rhodes against The Rock & Roman Reigns in the main event of night one the day before. McIntyre earned the title shot by winning an Elimination Chamber match last month in Perth, Australia.

Punk suffered a torn right triceps in the Royal Rumble in January after making it to the final two of the match eventually won by Cody Rhodes.

WWE posted an interview with Punk regarding Monday’s segment:

Becky Lynch wants to open WWE WrestleMania 40 night one

Becky Lynch is hoping that her match against Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley will open WrestleMania 40.

With The Bloodline and Cody Rhodes’ story taking up both spots, Ripley vs. Lynch won’t be able to main event either night one or night two of WrestleMania. Roman Reigns & The Rock vs. Rhodes & Seth Rollins will headline night one. Reigns vs. Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship will go on last at night two.

In an interview with ClutchPoints, Lynch said she isn’t worried about not getting to main event WrestleMania this year. Lynch said she’d love to open the show. If Lynch isn’t in the main event, she always wants to be in the first match because the fans are so excited for it.

Lynch said:

Nah, man, I’m not worried about card order. I would love to open the show. I would love that. I’ve never opened WrestleMania before.

And to open this one, as big as it is in Philadelphia, I’m just putting that out there. It would be pretty cool because if it’s not the main event, I always want to be the opening spot — it’s always a great place on the card because people are so excited.

Lynch clarified that she would prefer to open night one instead of night two:

Ooh, night one. I would love to open the whole of WrestleMania, you know what I’m saying? Just [to] be that first match for that whole event.

[Opening the show will] give me enough time that I can relax and really enjoy Colby [Seth Rollins] main eventing WrestleMania and getting to watch him do that because that will be so special.

Lynch secured this WrestleMania title shot against Ripley by winning the women’s Elimination Chamber match last month.

Ripley’s Women’s World Championship reign is closing in on the one-year mark. She won the title from Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 39 in April 2023.

WrestleMania 40 is taking place on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.

Before WrestleMania, Lynch’s memoir, “Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl,” will be released this Tuesday (March 26).

Sami Zayn ‘grateful’ for his spot at WWE WrestleMania 40

After being in one of the main events last year, Sami Zayn is grateful for the spot he holds on the WrestleMania 40 card.

Zayn is challenging Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40. Their title match was confirmed when Zayn won a number one contender’s gauntlet on the March 11 episode of Raw.

In an interview with Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Zayn said he feels lucky to be in this position at WrestleMania. Zayn thinks facing Gunther is the biggest spot you could have at the event except for being in the two top matches:

I think it’s pretty big for sure. Coming off of last year where I found myself in a really just – you know, let’s call it right place, right time. But I caught a lot of steam and a lot of momentum heading into WrestleMania over the six months or so leading into it and ended up in the main event. And any time you do something big, you know, I think in anything, I think in any field, not just as a wrestler or an artist or a whatever, but when you’re able to accomplish something, there’s always sort of like, ‘Oh, now what’ on the other side of it.

It’s hard to sometimes keep that up, or wonder what’s next, what could you do to top it, or anything like that. And if you watch WWE, you see how fast things move. And I’m just – I feel very lucky to be in a pretty good position a year later challenging the longest-reigning, most dominant Intercontinental Champion of all time. And if you’re not in that top, top match with, let’s say, Cody and Roman or The Rock or whatever, now I’d say this is the biggest match outside of that that you could possibly want to be in. So I’m pretty grateful to find myself in that spot, and I’m excited about it.

Zayn’s feud with The Bloodline culminated in 2023 when he and Kevin Owens defeated The Usos in the main event of WrestleMania 39 night one.

Gunther’s Intercontinental title reign recently passed the 650-day mark. He’s been champion since June 2022.

On Raw earlier this week, Gunther and Zayn had a contract signing for their WrestleMania title match:

WrestleMania 40 is being held in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. WWE has yet to confirm which night Gunther vs. Zayn will be taking place on.

WWE WrestleMania qualifying tournament finals set

The final four is set for the WWE WrestleMania qualifying tournament on SmackDown.

They will meet on next Friday’s SmackDown, with the winners added to the six-pack Tag Team title ladder match set for WrestleMania 40.

The Street Profits defeated Akam & Rezar of Authors of Pain on Friday’s SmackDown, while Theory & Waller were victorious over Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson of The OC.

Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne of New Catch Republic, plus Humberto Carrillo & Angel Garza of Legado Del Fantasma won bracket one matches on last week’s SmackDown and will also meet on next week’s SmackDown with a spot in the WrestleMania ladder match on the line.

On this week’s Raw, The New Day’s Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods, DIY’s Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano, plus R-Truth & The Miz won matches to qualify for the WrestleMania Tag Team title match.

Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions Finn Balor & Damian Priest will defend their titles at WrestleMania in the six-pack ladder match.

The field for the WrestleMania Tag title match:

  • Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship six-pack challenge ladder match: Finn Balor & Damian Priest defend against The New Day, DIY, The Miz & R-Truth, Legado Del Fantasma/New Catch Republic winner, Street Profits/Austin Theory & Grayson Waller winner

WWE WrestleMania 40 status updates on Austin, Undertaker, Cena

Some of WWE’s biggest legends of all time could be involved with WrestleMania 40.

In the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reports that the belief right now is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Undertaker, and John Cena “will have something at WrestleMania” in some form. Meltzer notes that nothing is official regarding them appearing at the event:

Nothing is official but the belief right now is that Steve Austin, Undertaker and John Cena will have something at WrestleMania in some form. At press time, there is no creative locked in for Cena and Austin at this moment, or if there is it’s a well-guarded secret. A lot depends on how much they are willing to do and money. Cena is free but depending on what acting stuff he has and how quick after he’s filming would determine how much he can or can’t do for insurance reasons. Austin and Undertaker would be based on willingness that they have.

Cena has repeatedly teased appearing at WrestleMania during recent media appearances.

After returning to the ring against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, Austin did not appear at WrestleMania 39 last year.

Undertaker was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 38 weekend.

WrestleMania 40 is taking place from Philadelphia on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. The Rock will be in action in the night one main event, teaming with Roman Reigns against Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins. Reigns vs. Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship will then headline night two of WrestleMania 40.

CM Punk says he’ll be at WWE WrestleMania 40

CM Punk is going to WrestleMania, whether he’s invited or not.

During a video promoting his appearance on Raw next week in Chicago, Punk said he’d be at WrestleMania in Philadelphia next month.

“WrestleMania is in Philadelphia,” Punk said. What are the first four letters in Philadelphia? Phil…whether or not I’m invited, it never matters to CM Punk, he’ll be there.”

Punk’s first televised match since his WWE return in November took place back at the Royal Rumble in January. Despite tearing his tricep in the match, he was the last person eliminated from the Rumble by eventual winner Cody Rhodes. On the following Raw, Punk arrived in a sling and announced WrestleMania wasn’t in the cards for him. This resulted in Drew McIntyre coming out and mocking Punk over his circumstances, leading to a brawl.

In the weeks since, McIntyre has continued to use Punk’s name in promos, to the point of selling merchandise related to his actions following the Royal Rumble. McIntyre has since went on to win the Elimination Chamber match in Perth and will challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania 40.

Three teams qualify for WWE WrestleMania 40 ladder match

Three new teams have qualified for the Six-Pack Ladder Match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles at WrestleMania 40.

Awesome Truth (The Miz & R-Truth), DIY (Tomasso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano), and The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) have now qualified to challenge Damian Priest & Finn Balor at WrestleMania 40 next month. Awesome Truth defeated Indus Sher, New Day defeated Otis & Akira Tozawa, and DIY defeated The Creed Brothers on Monday’s Raw.

Two mini-tournaments are taking place on SmackDown to determine the final two spots. Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne will meet Humberto Carrillo & Angel Garza in a future match to determine the first spot after they won matches on SmackDown. The OC will meet Austin Theory & Grayson Waller and The Authors of Pain will take on The Street Profits on SmackDown this coming Friday. The winners of those two matches will then face off to determine the second spot in the ladder match.

Three new matches are official for WWE WrestleMania 40 set for Saturday, April 6 & Sunday, April 7.

United States Champion Logan Paul will defend his title at WrestleMania in a triple threat match against Randy Orton & Kevin Owens in a bout announced during Friday’s SmackDown episode.

Paul retained the US title by DQ over Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble, while Orton pinned both Owens and Paul in the men’s Elimination Chamber match in Perth last month.

After Jey Uso issued a challenge on Raw this week to brother Jimmy Uso to face him at WrestleMania, Jimmy officially accepted the challenge in a heated promo on Friday’s SmackDown episode.

LA Knight issued a challenge on SmackDown to AJ Styles for a match at WrestleMania after Styles interfered in the men’s Elimination Chamber match in Perth leading to Knight being pinned by Drew McIntyre in that contest. Styles accepted the challenge on SmackDown with a sneak attack, laying out Knight with a steel chair.

Gunther vs. Sami Zayn IC title match official for WWE WrestleMania 40

Sami Zayn is going to WrestleMania.

Zayn won the gauntlet match on Raw to win the right to challenge Gunther for the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania 40 next month. The bout ended with Zayn rolling up Chad Gable as Gable attempted to score a submission win with the ankle lock. Zayn hugged Gable after the match, but the show ended with Gunther’s music playing as the two had a staredown.

The gauntlet saw Ricochet defeat JD McDonagh in the first match. Bronson Reed then beat Ricochet. Zayn defeated Reed, but was attacked by Reed after the match. Despite this, Zayn went on to defeat Nakamura, then pinned Gable in the final match.

Recent weeks saw multiple WWE stars trying to get the attention of General Manager Adam Pearce in an attempt to face Gunther at WrestleMania. Pearce announced last week that a gauntlet match would take place to determine the new number one contender.

Here is the current lineup for both nights of WrestleMania. The shows stream live on Peacock/WWE Network on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at 7 p.m. Eastern time:

Jey Uso issues WWE WrestleMania 40 challenge to Jimmy Uso

Jey Uso has issued a WrestleMania 40 challenge to his twin brother Jimmy Uso.

In a segment on Monday’s WWE Raw, Jey laid out a challenge for a brother vs. brother match at WrestleMania 40. Jey dared Jimmy to accept the challenge, promising to knock his brother’s teeth out:

The singles match would come a year after The Usos main evented night one of WrestleMania 39 as a tag team, defending the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn at the 2023 event.

Both Usos left The Bloodline faction in the aftermath of WrestleMania 39 last year, but Jimmy ultimately turned against his brother and rejoined Roman Reigns & Solo Sikoa in The Bloodline. Jimmy cost Jey the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in a match against Reigns at SummerSlam in 2023, and also cost his brother the Intercontinental Championship by interfering in a match between Jey and Gunther last month on Raw.

The WrestleMania 40 card continues to take shape following Monday’s Raw, where a six-pack ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles was added to the lineup.

The official WrestleMania 40 card to this point is below. The show streams live on Peacock/WWE Network on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at 7 p.m. Eastern time:

Raw GM Adam Pearce & SmackDown GM Nick Aldis announced during Monday’s Raw that The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor & Damian Priest will defend their Tag Team titles at WrestleMania in the ladder match.

The five other teams in the bout will be decided in a series of qualifying matches to take place on WWE programming in the coming weeks. Teams from both Raw and SmackDown will have the opportunity to qualify.

The first three qualifying matches will take place on the Monday, March 18 Raw. Alpha Academy’s Otis & Akira Tozawa will take on The New Day’s Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods in one qualifying bout, DIY’s Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa will face The Creed Brothers in another qualifier, plus The Miz & R-Truth will take on Indus Sher in the other qualifying match set for next week’s Raw.
