Friday News Update

  • Garrett and I will be doing a show today to go over a lot of major news, including WWE cuts, Warner/Discovery and AEW, and other news in the current issue of the Observer.
  • Some notes on the WWE cuts today.
  • Obviously Parker Boudreaux (Harland) had been removed from the Joe Gacy act so they knew something was coming
  • The decision had been made after several tryouts that they didn’t see Dakota Kai as main roster material. She had been with the company for years and the idea is not to have people have ten year careers as NXT stars so there was nothing left for her. A lot of people disagree but they have visions about women and obviously she’s a good wrestler but didn’t fit
  • Just as obviously, Malcolm Bivens last week had started a multi-week new storyline that had a lot of stuff left. While he did not sign a new deal, him being cut blindsided the people in creative at NXT
  • Same for Persia Pirotta, who just bought a house. She was in a storyline ongoing.
  • Same for Dexter Lumis, which leaves creative in the lurch since he’s supposed to be married to Indi Hartwell and they were given no name to develop a storyline reason he’s gone
  • Paige Prinzivalli was a referee who was cut
  • Mila Malani and Raelyn Divine were from the Las Vegas tryouts and had not made it to television
  • Draco Anthony had just started on television.
  • The WWE’s 9/3 show at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales will be called WWE Clash at the Castle. Tickets go on sale on 5/20 and are expected to sell out instantly.
  • Smackdown tonight from Albany, NY was taped on Friday since the Smackdown crew is in London and the decision was made not to tape from there:
  • Ricochet vs. Shanky for IC title
  • Raquel Rodriguez vs. ?
  • Naomi vs. Shayna Baszler
  • Xavier Woods vs. Ridge Holland
  • Kofi Kingston vs Sheamus
  • Drew McIntyre vs. Sami Zayn cage match
  • Ronda Rousey vs. Shotzi Beat the Clock challenge
  • Charlotte Flair vs. Aliyah Beat the Clock challenge
  • Usos-RK Bro contract signing
  • AEW Rampage tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern on TNT:

  • Jared Gordon (155.5) vs. Grant Dawson (155.5)
  • Andre Fili (145.5) vs. Joanderson Brito (145.5)
  • Andrei Arlovski (246) vs. Jake Collier (265)
  • Rob Font (138.5) vs. Marlon Vera (136)
  • Font missed weight by 2.5 pounds and had to forfeit 20 percent of his purse
  • They are pushing tomorrow’s Amanda Serrano (42-1-1) vs. Katie Taylor (20-0) boxing match for Taylor’s lightweight title as the biggest women’s boxing match in history. It is the first time a women’s fight will ever headline Madison Square Garden. It is said that DAZN paid WWE nearly $500,000 to heavily promote the show across all of WWE outfits in a deal made with Stephanie McMahon. It will be the first women’s boxing match where both participants will earn in excess of $1 million. They are claiming it is expected to sellout. There are 14,000 tickets out and 3,000 still left as of yesterday. WWE is involved heavily in this with a lot of talent at the weigh-ins and some will be at the right itself.
  • There will be a lot of stuff this coming Monday in mainstream media since Dwayne Johnson turns 50.
  • Arena Mexico has one of its biggest shows of the year tonight with Mistico vs. Titan vs. Templario in a series of singles matches to determine the Universal champion. William Regal, Road Dogg among WWE Performance Center cuts

William Regal and Road Dogg are among the names released from WWE this afternoon as part of cuts at the WWE Performance Center.

Bryan Alvarez has confirmed that William Regal, Road Dogg, Timothy Thatcher, Danny Burch, Hideki Suzuki, Cathy Corino, Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh), Scott Armstrong, George Carroll and Ryan Katz are among the names that have been released from the company. PWInsider also reported that Chris Guy (Ace Steel) have been released.

“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center,” WWE said in a statement. “We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”

Regal had been working as a talent scout for the company. Prior to the NXT 2.0 relaunch this past fall, he had been the on-air General Manager of the brand. He had been part of WWE dating back to 2000, when he re-signed with the company as a wrestler following a previous stint in the late 90s. Road Dogg (Brian James) had been a producer and writer for WWE since 2014, and had recently moved to NXT.

Thatcher, Suzuki, and Burch had been on-air talents for NXT. Suzuki, known as Hachiman, had been on the January 4th edition of NXT, accompanying Roderick Strong to ringisde for his match against Carmelo Hayes.

Kapoor had formerly been a Senior Vice President of Creative for WWE and moved to Florida last year to work in NXT full-time. He was also The Great Khali’s longtime on-air manager. Ace Steel had been working as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center. Katz had been a creative producer involved in character development and vignettes and had been with the company since 2015. Armstrong had been a long time referee on WWE’s main roster before moving to NXT.

Corino, best known as Allison Danger, had started working as a coach for the WWE Performance Center last October. Carroll had joined the company last year as a producer and writer.

Keith Lee, Karrion Kross, Nia Jax part of 18 WWE releases

Shortly after WWE’s quarterly investors call wrapped, the company began making cuts to their talent roster, citing “budget cuts” as the reason.

From the main WWE roster, Keith Lee, Mia Yim, Nia Jax, Karrion Kross, Eva Marie, Lince Dorado, Gran Metalik, Harry Smith, and B-Fab were released.

From the NXT roster, Scarlett, Ember Moon, Franky Monet, Jessi Kamea, Katrina Cortez, Jeet Rama, Oney Lorcan, Trey Baxter and Zayda Ramier have been let go.

Mass releases have become a regular occurrence in WWE throughout 2021 as they made 13 roster cuts on August 6, another 14 on June 25, six on June 2, eight on May 19, and 10 on April 15.

Kross and Lee are both former NXT Champions. Lee had been rebranded as “Bearcat” Keith Lee on Raw. Kross had not been accompanied by Scarlett on the main roster as he had been in NXT.

Jax is a former Raw Women’s Champion and a two-time former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion. Her pairing with Shayna Baszler was the focus of the women’s tag division in WWE throughout much of this year.

Scarlett stated on Twitter that she has a 30-day non-compete clause following here release, while Oney Lorcan stated on YouTube that his non-compete is 90 days.

Monet tweeted: “TAYA VALKYRIE” while Moon tweeted: “All I can do is laugh…”

Nick Khan says WWE cuts not about readying company for sale

WWE President and Chief Revenue Officer Nick Khan says that the rash of WWE talent releases are not about readying the company for a sale.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani for BT Sport, Helwani directly asked Khan about rumors of a WWE sale and whether or not the talent releases that have taken place in 2020 and 2021 could be explained as preparation for a sale.

“I don’t know that there’s one explanation for it,” said Khan. “Ultimately, what’s looked at is this person, for us, going to move the needle now, or in the imminent future.”

“We live in the present, we live in the future, we don’t live in the past,” Khan said.

When asked to explain his “open for business” quote from an appearance on the Recode podcast, Khan said that “If someone credible calls on anything, NFTs, trading cards, we take the call. We are inherently sales people,” Khan said. “When I say ‘open for business,’ if somebody calls, credible, asking ‘hey, are you guys for sale?’ it’s what’s your offer? What are you thinking?”

Khan said plainly, though, that there are no active conversations with any outside entities about buying WWE currently going on. “People call all the time about all different things, but we’re not in an y active conversations about any of that.”

“We’re not trying to sell, that’s not our intent, there are no internal meetings about selling this company. The internal meetings are about growing it,” Khan said.

Khan went on to explain that there is a collective of individuals making the decisions as to which talent will be released. Khan listed himself, Bruce Prichard, Kevin Dunn, Stephanie McMahon, Paul Levesque and Vince McMahon as those who are responsible for the choices, but clarified that Vince McMahon has the final say.

“Keep in mind, in WWE, as you know, there’s one boss and that’s Vince,” Khan said.

The full interview can be seen below.

August 16, 2021 Observer Newsletter: More NXT cuts, Dominic DeNucci passes away

Dominic DeNucci, one of pro wrestling’s major stars of the 1960s and the biggest long-term drawing card in the history of Jim Barnett’s World Championship Wrestling promotion in Australia, passed away on 8/11 at the age of 89.

Born Dominic DeNucciaroni on January 23, 1932, he had gotten his first big break in a tag team with Ronnie Etchison in Stampede Wrestling in 1963 and made his name by drawing big crowds pushed as an Italian superstar in 1964 opposite Ray Stevens at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, including a run as United States champion.

When Barnett opened up World Championship Wrestling, with national television in Australia in 1964, he used DeNucci as his top babyface, feuding with the likes of Killer Kowalski and Stevens. The territory opened on fire, as over the first year, they averaged 9,000 paid weekly at Sydney Stadium and the top stars like DeNucci were the highest paid wrestlers in the world of that era.

July 5, 2021 Observer Newsletter: More WWE cuts, Del Wilkes passes away

WWE cut another 14 wrestlers this past week, with many who had been regulars on 205 Live, plus former main roster performers Tyler Breeze & Fandango, the Bollywood Boyz and Killian Dain, the husband of Nikki Cross.

It’s obvious that the names were not decided as recently as two weeks ago since on the 6/8 episode of NXT, Breeze & Fandango got a win over Imperium, and shot an angle where Breeze was buried underneath the Imperium flag, which appeared to be a way to revive that program.

Also on the list of cuts were 205 Live regulars Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari and August Gray, along with the tag team of Ever Rise, which had been getting TV time of late with NXT, Curt Stallion, who got a few week push on NXT and then was forgotten about and did some 205 Live dates, Arturo Ruas, a Brazilian amateur wrestler, Marina Shafir, who former high-level judoka who was part of the Ronda Rousey led Four Horsewomen, Tino Sabbatelli, a former legitimate NFL player noted for a great physique who would have been a major star had he come along in the 70s, and Killian Dain, the husband of Nikki Cross.

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • John Cena apologized in Mandarin on Weibo, China’s popular social media platform, for referring to Taiwan as a country in an interview promoting F9. Although Taiwan is self-governing, China has used its economic influence to monitor speech regarding Taiwan, which remains a sensitive political topic.
  • Deadline reported that along with the already reported cuts in digital, WWE Studios and its film, TV, and social media departments also saw layoffs today.
  • James Wortman, a content director with WWE, confirmed on Twitter he was part of today’s cuts. Adam Kirshner, a digital video producer in WWE, also was part of the cuts.
  • Axel Tischer, formerly Alexander Wolfe, spoke to Ringsiders Wrestling regarding his release, saying that his contract expired on June 15th and WWE opted not to renew it. He also said there were plans at one point for a Sanity reunion. “But going back to the plan, actually the plan before the pandemic hit was to bring SAnitY back together.” he said (h/t Post Wrestling). “But then the pandemic hit and then E.Y. [Eric Young] got released, and what I know is that not even Triple H knew about EY. The only thing — and E.Y., he said it in an interview, he [Triple H] was one of the first guys to give him the call and, ‘Sorry man, I didn’t know about that,’ and I don’t know this, just [guessing], they probably tried to rehire him but, as I can relate right now, there’s no animosity, there’s no hatred but it’s a sour pill to swallow that they kind of like deny you and you kind of think, ‘Okay guys, you don’t want to have me? F you.’ We’re all humans, we all feel.”
  • Kofi Kingston told The Daily Star that Randy Orton’s name has to be considered when talking about the best in the world right now in professional wrestling. “What Randy does is unique in that way – he does so much without doing anything at all, so I’d have to put him in the conversation as being one of the greatest. “To be able to last so long… he’s even more compelling now in a lot of different ways. So as a performer, you can’t have the conversation [about the greatest] without having Randy be in there, from the longevity alone. That doesn’t happen by accident.”
  • Drew McIntyre spoke to the Dallas Morning News ahead of fans returning to arenas in July.
  • Bronson Reed talked to Sports Illustrated and Metro following his North American title win on last week’s episode of NXT.
  • Jaxson Ryker did an interview with Wrestling Inc about his new association with Elias.
  • Tyler Bate spoke to Sports Bible following his Heritage Cup win on last week’s NXT UK, and also talked about wanting to face A-Kid in a 60 minute unlimited rounds match.
  • Guests for tomorrow’s episode of The Bump include RJ City, Sonya Deville, Shinsuke Nakamura, TikTok sensation “The Professor” Nick Harrison, and Dominik and Rey Mysterio.
  • A 2 out of 3 falls match between Mustafa Ali and Ricochet will take place on this week’s WWE Main Event.
  • Alexa Bliss’ pet pig, Larry-Steve, has passed away.
  • WWE had added Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler and Kevin Owens from the May 23, 2017 episode of SmackDown, and Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler from No Way Out 2012 to their YouTube channel.
  • Roman Reigns turns 36 today.
