UFC on ABC 9 live results: Robert Whittaker vs. Reinier de Ridder

The Octagon returns to Abu Dhabi for the first of two events in 2025 as UFC On ABC 9 takes place inside the Etihad Arena on Yas Island.

The main event is a big battle at middleweight as former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker takes on rising contender Reinier de Ridder. Whittaker is looking to rebound following a loss to Khamzat Chimaev in October. de Ridder is in his first main event as he looks to continue the strong start to his UFC career and move to 4-0 in the promotion.

In the co-main event, it’s a battle at bantamweight as former UFC Bantamweight Champion Petr Yan takes on Marcus McGhee.

Also on the main card is a middleweight fight pitting Shara Magomedov against Marc-Andre Barriault; a flyweight bout between Asu Almabayev and Jose Ochoa; and a light heavyweight slugfest between Nikita Krylov and Bogdan Guskov.

Nguyen drops Yahya with a massive right hand to start and tries to land from the top but Yahya gets up. Yahya lands a kick and Nguyen lands a left hand and Yahya briefly goes down, but gets up. Nguyen continues to land punches. Nguyen lands and Yahya goes back down but he gets right back up. Nguyen lands a right hand and Yahya goes back down after Nguyen lands a left hand. Yahya gets back to his feet. Yahya lands a leg kick and Nguyen connects with a right hand. Yahya is still throwing. They trade inside the pocket and Nguyen drops Yahya again after connecting. Nguyen lands from the top but Yahya rolls to his feet and gets a brief takedown, but they get up. Nguyen drops Yahya again with a big right hand and lands. Ridiculous round from Nguyen. 10-8 Nguyen.

Yahya was stumbling to his stool between rounds but we continue. They trade in close range and Yahya rocks Nguyen, who stumbles back. They start trading and Nguyen drops Yahya for a sixth time in the fight. Nguyen gets on top and lands some punches. Nguyen controlling from the top and looks for an arm-triangle choke as he has the mount. Yahya scrambles to his feet. Yahya lands a right hand. Nguyen lands a right hand that hurts Yahya. Yahya looks for a takedown but Nguyen defends and they break. They trade and Nguyen lands a big left hook. Nguyen with a pair of uppercuts. Yahya’s left eye is completely closed and he probably has a broken orbital bone. Nguyen drops Yahya again with another right hand. 10-9 Nguyen, 20-17 Nguyen.

The fight has been stopped as Yahya can’t continue due to the damage to his left eye.

UFC on ABC 8 live results: Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.

The Octagon heads to the country of Azerbaijan for the very first time as UFC action returns to network television with UFC on ABC 8 from the Baku Crystal Hall in Baku.

The main event is a big fight at 205 pounds as former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill takes on former title challenger Khalil Rountree Jr. for five rounds. Both men are looking to get back into the win column as Hill is on a two-fight losing skid while Rountree Jr. is coming off an October title fight loss to Alex Pereira.

In the co-main event, it’s an exciting lightweight bout between ranked contender Rafael Fiziev and rising contender Ignacio Bahamondes. Fiziev is looking to end a three-fight losing skid while Bahamondes comes in riding a three-fight win streak.

Also on the main card is a heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and the debuting Rizvan Kuniev; a 165-pound catchweight bout between the debuting Tofiq Musayev and Myktybek Orolbai; and a featherweight bout pitting Muhammad Naimov against Bogdan Grad.

The Octagon heads back to Abu Dhabi for the first of two events there over the next few months as UFC action is back on network television for UFC on ABC 7 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island.

The main event is a pivotal bout in the bantamweight division to determine who is next in line for a title shot as Cory Sandhagen takes on undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov. Sandhagen comes into the fight having won three straight, while Nurmagomedov has kicked off his career by winning the first 17 fights of his career.

The rest of the main card is loaded with talent as undefeated standout Shara Nurmagomedov takes on Michal Oleksiejczuk in the co-main event. Also on the card is a bantamweight bout pitting recent title challenger Marlon Vera against former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo; a welterweight bout between Tony Ferguson and Michael Chiesa; and a clash of top ten fighters in the women’s strawweight division as Mackenzie Dern goes against Loopy Godinez.

The Octagon travels to Saudi Arabia for the very first time as the UFC returns to network television with UFC on ABC 6 from the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.

The main event is both a big one at middleweight and one that came together just last week as former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker looks to get another crack at the title when he takes on dangerous late-notice opponent Ikram Aliskerov.

Aliskerov takes this fight on just a week’s notice as a replacement for Khamzat Chimaev who was forced out due to an illness. He has won 15 of his 16 professional fights with eleven finishes.

The co-main event has potential heavyweight title shot ramifications on the line as Sergei Pavlovich takes on Alexander Volkov. Also on the main card is a middleweight bout between Kelvin Gastelum and Daniel Rodriguez, and a light heavyweight bout pitting Johnny Walker against Volkan Oezdemir.

UFC action is back on network television as the Octagon heads to the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida for UFC On ABC 5: Emmett vs. Topuria, headlined by an exciting featherweight battle.

Featherweight sluggers Josh Emmett and Ilia Topuria square off in the five-round main event. Emmett is coming off a loss in an interim title fight to Yair Rodriguez in February, which ended a five-fight win streak. Topuria enters his first main event looking to remain undefeated, as he’s won 13 straight to start his career, including five straight UFC wins.

In the co-main event, it’s a battle of rising female flyweight contenders as Amanda Ribas takes on Maycee Barber. Also on the main card is heavyweights Austen Lane and Justin Tafa, a featherweight fight between David Onama and Gabriel Santos, and a middleweight bout between Brendan Allen and Bruno Silva.

Heavyweights Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Jailton Almeida square off in the five-round headline bout. Rozenstruik, one of the big knockout artists in the division, is looking for his second straight win. Almeida, one of the biggest prospects in the sport, is looking to climb the rankings as he sports a 13-fight win streak.

In the co-main event, former light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith returns to action for the first time since July, looking to get back into the win column, as he battles Johnny Walker, winner of two straight fights.

Also on the main card: welterweights Daniel Rodriguez and Ian Garry battle, a light heavyweight bout between Carlos Ulberg and Ihor Potieria, and a welterweight clash of veterans pitting Tim Means against Alex Morono.

Kim rocks Bohm right away with a right hand and looks to capitalize but didn’t see it and Bohm got a takedown. Bohm gets the back and looks for a rear-naked choke. It’s at a bad angle right now. Kim escapes and is now inside the guard of Bohm. Bohm was looking for a triangle choke but Kim escapes and lands. Kim now gets the back of Bohm. Kim is looking to lock in a rear-naked choke but doesn’t quite have the correct position. Bohm is able to circle and escape and is now on top. Bohm is in side control and lands a couple of elbows. Close round. 10-9 Kim.

They trade to start the second before clinching against the fence. Kim gets a takedown and is working inside the guard of Bohm but not a whole lot is happening. They get to their feet. Bohm lands a right hand but Kim counters with a right hand. Both are landing at a distance. Bohm scores a takedown. Kim is looking for a guillotine choke. Bohm makes it to the end of the round. 10-9 Kim, 20-18 Kim.

Kim gets a point taken away from her as she kicked Bohm in the chest several seconds after the horn ended for the second round. They clinch right away and pushes it against the fence. Bohm is saying she can’t continue. The fight is stopped as Bohm can’t continue and now we wait on the official word. The Octagon is back on network television this week as it debuts in the new UBS Arena in Long Island for an afternoon slate of fights, featured a stacked main card with some exciting match-ups.

In the main event, former two-time featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega looks to start a run at another title shot as he takes on Yair Rodriguez, who is also looking to start a run at a title shot. Ortega is looking to rebound from a title fight loss to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 266 in September, while Rodriguez is looking to rebound from a loss to Max Holloway in November. The winner of this fight could be in line for a potential title shot.

In the co-main event, it is a battle of women’s strawweights as Michelle Waterson returns from a long layoff to take on Amanda Lemos. Also on the main card is a welterweight bout between Li Jingliang and Muslim Salikhov, a featherweight battle between exciting fighters Shane Burgos and Charles Jourdain, and a re-scheduled battle in the women’s flyweight division between Lauren Murphy and Miesha Tate.

They were trading and Jacoby drops Jung with a right hand and starts walking off like it was over and then the referee just decided to stop it. That was a big finish for Jacoby but also a weird one.

They clinch right away against the fence. Burns gets it down to the mat and gets the back and then switches for the triangle choke. Algeo is trying to scramble out but he’s squeezing and landing punches as well. Burns is also looking for the arm. Algeo lands some punches as he’s trying to escape. Algeo pops out of the triangle choke but Burns still has the arm. Algeo steps across and is out and in the half-guard of Burns. Algeo landing big punches from the top. Algeo with some right hands from the top as Burns is trying to throw his legs up. They try to scramble but Burns is hurt from the punches of Algeo and Algeo is teeing off from the top. Algeo stands and Burns is ordered up and he slowly gets up. Algeo gets a takedown and has the crucifix and lands some elbows at the end. 10-9 Algeo.

Algeo with a body kick and Burns grabs the leg and gets a takedown but Algeo ends up on top. Algeo is trying to get out from the top and Burns grabs the leg and looks for a leg lock but Algeo escapes and he stands. Algeo lands a big right hand and then lands a leg kick and Burns is ordered up and can’t get to his feet and the fight is stopped. What a showing from Algeo.

Shore throws a right hand and Simon ducks under looking for the takedown but Shore defends. Simon with an inside leg kick. Shore with a high kick. Simon with a right hand. Simon lands to the body and tries a takedown against the fence. Simon landing some short knees as he has Shore pinned against the fence but they break as Shore lands an elbow. Simon with a left hook as Shore lands a right hand. They tie up against the fence. They break and Shore with a knee. Shore lands the jab twice. Shore with a left hook. Shore with a body kick. He lands another jab. Close round. 10-9 Simon.

Mudaerji picks Schnell up and slams him down then Schnell sweeps to the top and lands. Schnell with some right hands from the top. Schnell lands a couple of elbows. They trade to start the second and Mudaerji lands a groin kick and we have a timeout. They get back to action and both land punches and Mudaerji rocks Schnell with punches a couple of times. Mudaerji lands a big left hand and Schnell goes down for a moment but gets up and they trade. Mudaerji rocks Schnell with a big elbow but Schnell stays on his feet. They trade then Mudaerji lands the big elbow again and Schnell looks out on his feet but they trade and break. Schnell lands a right hand. Mudaerji with a big left hand. Schnell returns fire with a combo. Schnell with a big right hand then gets a takedown. Schnell gets mount and is landing big punches and elbows from the top. Schnell with big elbows from the top. Jingliang with a leg kick. He lands some more as they’re both looking to find openings for their punches. Jingliang lands a kick as Salikhov was grabbing him and scored a takedown. Salikhov lands from the top then they get to their feet. Neither really landing. Salikhov with a spin kick which hits the arm of Jingliang. They trade leg kicks. 10-9 Salikhov.

Salikhov lands a big right hand that momentarily floors Jingliang but he gets up. Salikhov with the jab after he misses a big spin attack. Jingliang lands a right hand. Jingliang with an inside leg kick. Salikhov with a front kick to the body. Jingliang gets the takedown. They get to their feet and trade punches. Salikhov with a spin kick to the body. Jingliang rocks Salikhov with a left hand and has Salikhov in trouble. Jingliang lands a right hand and Salikhov shoots for a takedown but Jingliang defends. Jingliang then drops Salikhov with a massive right hand and some follow-up shots end it. Big finish and win for Jingliang!

They’re feeling each other out to start and neither has landed until over a minute in when they trade leg kicks. They then trade body kicks and Lemos with a jab. Lemos with a body kick. Waterson with a leg kick. Lemos with a leg kick. They trade leg kicks. Lemos with a combo and just misses what would’ve been a big left hook. Waterson gets a takedown and is working in the guard of Lemos and lands some body punches. Waterson steps over and lands and Lemos sweeps to the top at the end. 10-9 Waterson-Gomez.

They trade to start the second round. Lemos with a body kick. Waterson lands a leg kick. Waterson with some side kicks. They both land right hands as Lemos lands to the body. Lemos throws a right hand and Waterson ducks under and almost got a takedown and Lemos grabs the neck and locks in a guillotine choke and Waterson apparently taps in a moment that gets missed by the referee. Lemos gets the win by submission.

Ortega with a knee. Ortega trying hard for the takedown against the fence. Ortega still has the body lock as he’s trying hard for the takedown. They break to the center. Rodriguez with a nice right hand. Rodriguez with a front kick followed by a right hand and Ortega shoots for the takedown and pushes it against the fence. Ortega gets the takedown. Ortega’s shoulder suddenly pops out of socket and the fight is stopped. Ortega was escaping an armbar attempt from Rodriguez and his shoulder popped out and this is an unfortunate end to the fight.

The UFC returns to ABC for their second showing on the network as action in the Octagon returns after a week off for the first of three events in the month of April, with a middleweight main event put together on short notice headlining this event.

Middleweight contenders Marvin Vettori and Kevin Holland square off in the five-round headliner. Vettori was originally scheduled to fight Darren Till in this fight, which could’ve decided the next title challenger, but Till was forced out due to a collarbone injury, and Holland steps in on just nine days’ notice. Holland is looking to erase the sting of a disappointing loss to Derek Brunson just 21 days ago, while Vettori is looking to score his fifth straight win.

In the co-main event, it is a battle of featherweight prospects who haven’t fought in over a year as Sodiq Yusuff puts his six-fight win streak on the line against Arnold Allen and his nine-fight win streak. Also on the main card is a middleweight battle between Sam Alvey and Julian Marquez, a women’s strawweight bout between mothers as Nina Nunes takes on Mackenzie Dern, and a welterweight bout between Mike Perry and Daniel Rodriguez kicks off the main card.

Jung lands some elbows but gets warned to not land to the back of the head. Jung gets the crucifix position for a moment but Knight powers out of it. Jung with some body punches. Griffin now gets the back and is looking for the bulldog choke again. They get to their feet and Saldana with a knee to the body. Griffin gets Saldana back to the mat and takes the back. They trade to start the second and Gamrot gets a takedown but they scramble up and Gamrot has the back but they break. Gamrot lands a combo that drops Holtzman to a knee and then jumps on top and lands some punches and the fight is stopped. Big win for Gamrot as he picks up his first UFC win.

They exchange punches and Alvey lands a right hand. Both are throwing wild punches but mostly missing. Alvey doing his usual fighting against the fence. Marquez lands some punches that drop Alvey and Marquez is landing lots of hammerfists as Alvey is fighting on instinct. Marquez then locks in a rear-naked choke and Alvey goes out cold! Wow, what a finish by Marquez.

Report: UFC 257 does 1.6 million PPV buys, more ABC shows coming

Conor McGregor is still big business for the UFC as he and Dustin Poirier helped generate a reported 1.6 million pay-per-view buys for Saturday’s UFC 257 according to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal.

Ourand said sources have the domestic total at 1.2 million buys with an additional 400,000 purchased internationally. After the event, Dana White said the event would likely be either the second or third highest in company history. McGregor has been in the main event of the top five best-selling UFC PPVs of all time with his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 holding the top spot at 2.4 million buys.

From a technical perspective, the show had its issues as hundreds of thousands of potential buyers attempted to buy right before the main card started, causing a bottleneck that resulted in many unable to watch the show as it started — even those who had pre-bought the event.

ESPN issued a statement that night, saying “We are aware of an issue impacting some fans’ ability to access to tonight’s PPV event and are working to resolve it as quickly as possible.” It’s unknown if the 1.6 million includes those buys which technically failed to play and/or refunds.

The event was also the first since ESPN raised the UFC PPV price to $69.99, an increase of $5 from 2020.

Poirier defeated the Irish star by second round TKO in the main event which also featured the debut of former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler in the co-main event.

Ourand also reported that “ESPN has reacted so well to the numbers that execs are talking about finding more windows” on ABC for more live UFC shows. The UFC made its ABC debut on January 16th with an afternoon show opposite an NFL playoff game that still averaged 1.22 million viewers. Ourand said that number “convinced ESPN execs to try and find more ABC windows for UFC.”

UFC debut on ABC averages 1.2 million viewers

The UFC’s first network TV broadcast in two years averaged 1.22 million viewers on ABC.

Last Saturday’s three-hour afternoon show from Yas Island was headlined by an all-time great performance by former featherweight champion Max Holloway in a win over Calvin Kattar along with three other finishes and a fun fight between Carlos Condit and Matt Brown.

The show averaged 471,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo, good for a 0.49 rating.

The viewership was considerably down from the range of 2-2.5 million viewers UFC used to do on Fox with their last show airing there in December 2018. However, that show, like all Fox main cards, were in primetime and not in the afternoon.

One factor is the majority of the show went up against an NFL playoff game that averaged 26.5 million viewers on Fox. Even the pregame show that went against the rest of the card brought in 7.5 million viewers. The show was also simulcast on ESPN+.

While UFC never had a main card during the afternoon on Fox, they often aired prelims there before pay-per-view main cards and those shows did similar numbers to last Saturday and sometimes even less. 

Some examples: a February 24, 2018 show that aired from 5-8 PM Eastern averaged 1.214 million viewers; an April 14, 2018, show with a similar airtime averaged 970,000 viewers; and a July 28, 2018, show did 939,000 viewers.

The final Fox show in December 2018 (8 PM Eastern start time) did 1.8 million viewers with the FS2 prelims doing 256,000 viewers.
