Update on reason for recent WWE NXT roster cuts

An update is available regarding WWE’s recent roster cuts.

Our own Bryan Alvarez posted to his subscribers on X that the NXT cuts are said to have been made more from a talent evaluation standpoint than as budget cuts.

Alvarez wrote:

“The NXT cuts are said to be more talent evaluation cuts as opposed to anything budgetary. This happens pretty frequently.”

The talent cut from WWE’s developmental system includes Tyra Mae Steele, Carlee Bright, Sirena Linton, Tyson DuPont, Tyriek Igwe, Chris Island, Malik Blade, Trill London, Andre Chase, and Luca Crucifino.

They will all be under 30-day non-competes that will expire on May 24.

WWE NXT roster cuts

Dave Meltzer addressed some of the cuts in Friday’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing:

“Steele (Tamyra Mensah-Stock, a 2021 Olympic wrestling gold medalist) had won LFG and was pushed as going to the NXT roster after winning the series, but then only used for a few weeks before being forgotten about. In truth, she did not impress.

Bright and Linton are both on the current season of LFG, meaning they were cut the day before the season started where they were battling for an NXT television push. Bright also just started airing on a commercial for The General Insurance with Rhea Ripley.”

Update on backstage reaction to WWE LFG season winner’s release | Exclusive

People in NXT are questioning the purpose of WWE LFG following Friday’s roster cuts.

Season 1 winner of the show and Olympic gold medalist Tyra Mae Steele was part of WWE roster cuts revealed on Friday. Our own Bryan Alvarez wrote to his subscribers on X Sunday that there are people in NXT questioning what the purpose of WWE LFG is if the winner is just going to be cut.

Alvarez wrote:

“A lot of people in NXT questioning what the point of LFG is if they’re just going to cut the winner.”

Steele had been wrestling on episodes of EVOLVE prior to being part of Friday’s roster cuts. She challenged Kendal Grey for the WWE EVOLVE Women’s Championship in a match taped on February 20 that aired March 11.

Her last WWE match came at the March 20 EVOLVE taping at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, where she competed in a gauntlet match for an EVOLVE Women’s title shot won by Wendy Choo.

NXT wrestler announced for ROW Sherri Martel Classic

Booker T is bringing in at least one NXT wrestler for this year’s Sherri Martel Classic.

The one night tournament takes place Saturday, November 29, in Texas City, Texas. The first announced competitor is Olympic gold medalist Tyra Mae Steele.

Reality of Wrestling wrote on X:

“Olympic Gold Medalist @MensahTamStock looks to add the Sherri Martel Championship to her list of accomplishments as she enters this year’s prestigious tournament”

This will be the third edition of the Sherri Martel Classic. The first two events followed a format of six first round singles matches, two triple threat semifinals, and a singles match in the finals.

The inaugural Sherri Martel Classic was won by Hyan, who recently teamed with Maya World against TayJay on Collision. She defeated Promise Braxton in the 2022 finals, but Braxton returned to win the 2024 edition, defeating Gigi Rey in the finals.

In NXT, Steele is coming off a loss alongside Tavion Heights to Ethan Page and Chelsea Green at Heatwave, a win over Alba Fyre on the August 26 episode, and a loss to Kelani Jordan on the November 4 episode of NXT.

WWE NXT live results: Trick Williams vs. Mike Santana TNA title match

After winning the TNA World title at NXT Underground, Trick Williams now brings the gold to familiar soil in his first title defense on tonight’s WWE NXT.

Williams will defend against TNA’s Mike Santana who made his show debut last week with a win over Tavion Heights which was preceded by a face-to-face with Williams.

In a singles match, Myles Borne will attempt to be let out of the No Quarter Catch Crew as he takes on faction leader Charlie Dempsey in bout held under Heritage Cup rules. A win gives Borne an allegedly clean exit from the group.

LFG season one winner and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Tyra Mae Steele will make her NXT TV in-ring debut.

In a trios bout, Andre Chase University (Andre Chase, Uriah Connors & Kale Dixon) will take three members of DarkState to be named.

North American Title Summit

The show started out with Je’Von Evans in the ring with TNA’s Laredo. WWE NXT North American Champion Ethan Page then made his entrance and said the summit was a farce, Rey Fenix wasn’t even there, and he already had a title match made with “some Evolve kid” in Sean Legacy.

Page was about to leave and Legacy’s music hit. He said he’s got next and is going to love “kicking Page’s ass” after he becomes the first WWE Evolve Men’s Champion Wednesday.

The Vanity Project (Brad Baylor, Jackson Drake and Ricky Smokes) then came down to the ring and backed up Page. This led to a huge brawl.

– Vikingo was shown in the crowd.

Chase U (Andre Chase, Kale Dixon & Uriah Connors) vs. Darkstate (Cutler James, Dion Lennox & Osiris Griffin)

James, Lennox and Griffin picked up the win after a triple power bomb to Dixon.

Winners: Darkstate (Cutler James, Dion Lennox & Osiris Griffin)

-Laredo, Legacy and Evans were talking with Ava Rain backstage, complaining about Vanity Project aligning with Page. She then booked an match and said they should find a partner….who just happened to walk in in the form of Dragon Lee.

-TNA World Champion Trick Williams did a backstage promo to hype the main event.

-In earlier goings on, Tyra Mae Steele was commanding some attention in the locker room when Arianna Grace had enough and questioned if her Olympic medals were actually gold. After she left, Steele said she found her first opponent (for tonight).

Charlie Dempsey vs. Myles Borne under Heritage Cup rules

The stips here were that if Borne won, he was allowed to leave the No Quarter Catch Crew. Best of three falls rules applied here.

This ended in the fourth round when Borne nailed Dempsey with a dropkick, scoring the third pin and the victory by a two-to-one margin. Dempsey refused to shake Borne’s hand afterward.

Winner: Myles Borne

-The Culling were with Shawn Spears when Izzi Dame came in and nailed Brooks Jensen with a chair. She said their match originally scheduled for tonight has been moved a week and said Jensen has never fully been committed to their cause which Spears agreed with as they all left Jensen laying.

Arianna Grace vs. Tyra Mae Steele

This was Steele’s NXT TV debut after being crowned a winner on the first season of LFG. She showed off some of her wrestling skills which Grace couldn’t hang with. The end came after a series of lariats, a fireman’s carry into an AA followed by a German suplex with a bridge for the pin and win.

Winner: Tyra Mae Steele

– Mike Santana did a promo hyping the main event.

The Jacy Jayne era begins with a surprise

Fatal Influence came out to celebrate the kickoff of Jayne’s NXT Women’s title reign, putting herself and Fallon Henley over as starting in the business together. She said she and Henley had a long talk and decided it was “time to run the play with the slap heard ’round the world.”

This brought out a barrage of women eager to challenge for the title:

  • Lainey Reid jumped the barricade and that Jayne was the most beatable champion of all time.
  • Lola Vice then came out and said it was her time.
  • Jordynne Grace then came out and indicated the same.
  • Jaida Parker, Kelani Jordan, Lash Legend and then Thea Hail made their cases before a massive brawl broke out.

Then, the lights went out.

Mariah May’s surprise debut

The former AEW Women’s World Champion was in the balcony with a spotlight on her. She said the best women’s division in the world got “a lot more glamorous.” She was never mentioned by her name, so it seems like a change is coming ala Ricky Starks/Saints.

-Stevie Turner was talking to the women’s WWE Evolve roster about what it would be like when they got called up.

-Ricky Saints has a larynx contusion.

-Ethan Page was with Vanity Project and said he will take Laredo and Dragon Lee’s masks just like he took Starks’ voice.

-Mr. Iguana, Aerostar, and Octagon, Jr. were shown in the audience.

Dragon Lee, Je’Von Evans, Laredo & Sean Legacy vs. Ethan Page and Vanity Project (Brad Baylor, Jackson Drake & Ricky Smokes)

This went through a commercial break and featured a lot of action as you might expect. The end came with a tope con giro from Evans followed by an Asai moonsault from Laredo. While Legacy and Page were having a striking battle, Lee got Baylor in the tree of woe and hit Operation Dragon for the win.

Winners: Dragon Lee, Je’Von Evans, Laredo Kid & Sean Legacy

-Backstage, NXT Champion Oba Femi was with Robert Stone and Steve Turnier, waiting for his contract signing with Jasper Troy. Troy showed up and the two exchanged words before an untimidated Troy signed it.

-Sol Ruca and Zaria ran into a morose Tatum Paxley and her doll. They offered her help as did Izzi Dame who suggested she should purge anyone she can’t trust.

-Luca Crusifino wanted to chat with Tony D’Angelo and revealed he got them a tag match against High Ryze to prove his loyalty. D’Angelo wasn’t happy about this because he didn’t know to which Cruisifino retorted that they’re not really a family anymore.

TNA World Champion Trick Williams defends against Mike Santana

The winner here moves on to defend against Elijah at this Friday’s TNA Against All Odds. Elijah was at ringside.

This went through one commercial break. The beginning of the end was Santana nearly getting the win after a 450 splash to which Williams barely got his fingers on the ropes to break up. Williams got out of the ring and tried to provoke Elijah into hitting him with his guitar so he could get DQ’d.

Out of nowhere, First Class showed up and KC Navarro pulled Santana out of the ring, followed by a AJ Francis Slam. They threw him back in and after a Trickshot, it was over.

Winner: Trick Williams retained the TNA World title over Mike Santana

Williams, Navarro and Francis posed together to close the show as new allies have been made.

Tyra Mae Steele in-ring debut announced for WWE NXT

Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock, known in WWE as Tyra Mae Steele, will make her NXT in-ring debut on Tuesday’s episode.

WWE announced that the LFG Season One winner will wrestle for the first time on NXT, though her opponent has yet to be revealed.

Steele won gold in the women’s 68 kg freestyle wrestling category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), becoming the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling for the United States. She and fellow Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson were introduced to the live crowd at SummerSlam 2021 to celebrate their achievements.

Steele signed with WWE in May 2023 and reported to the Performance Center later that month.

Winners announced for season one of WWE LFG

The first winners of LFG have been crowned.

On Sunday’s episode that aired on A&E, Tyra Mae Steele and Jasper Troy were announced as the winners of the first season of the reality competition show. As a result, they have “signed NXT contracts,” although all of the competitors have been signed by WWE and already train at their Performance Center.

Steele, who was on The Undertaker’s team, was chosen over Zena Sterling, who was on Bubba Ray Dudley’s team. Hill, who was on Booker T’s team, was chosen over Team Undertaker’s Shiloh Hill. Undertaker was crowned the first-ever WWE LFG Champion as two of his rookies made it to the final round.

Both winners talked to Sports Illustrated following their win.

“I’m so excited. It’s been a long time coming. I swear I’ve just been waiting for my moment to shine,” Steele said. “I just feel elated. I just feel so, so freaking blessed.”

“This is the first thing I ever won,” Troy said. “I’ve never won a championship or a playoff, you know. So to me, this is like a Super Bowl moment. But I see how someone like DeVonta Smith or A.J. Brown will be like, ‘winning the Super Bowl was cool, but now it’s like what’s next?'”

Steele (real name Tamyra Mensah-Stock), 32, was the first Black woman to win gold in women’s freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She signed with WWE in 2023 and has competed on Level Up.

Troy (Antione Frazier), 26, has a background in football and made his debut in 2023, also previously competing on Level Up.

LFG has already been announced for a second season with Michelle McCool replacing Mickie James as one of the coaches.

WWE files trademarks for longtime WCW PPV name, new moniker for former Olympian

A familiar event name to WCW fans may be re-appearing in either WWE or NXT at some point in the future.

On Tuesday, WWE filed a trademark for SuperBrawl, the long-running WCW pay-per-view for which they previously owned the rights, relinquishing them on and off in the two decades since they acquired their former rival.

Cody Rhodes actually got the trademark in 2019 and then abandoned it in 2020.

SuperBrawl first began in 1991 and lasted for 11 years before its finale in 2001 with SuperBrawl Revenge which was the second-to-last PPV the company put on before being purchased by WWE that year.

WWE has previously used WCW-related brand names like Starrcade for a special one-off live event in addition to Halloween Havoc in NXT.

WWE also officially filed a trademark on the name Tyra Mae Steele, the new in-ring moniker for Tamyra Mensah-Stock, the female U.S. Olympic wrestler who will make her televised in-ring debut this Friday on NXT Level Up. She made her in-ring debut this past March on an NXT house show.

Gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock makes WWE TV debut at NXT Level Up taping

Olympic gold medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock took part in the NXT Level Up tapings at the WWE Performance Center on Tuesday.

Performing under the name Tyra Mae Steele, she wrestled Wren Sinclair on the show.

Mensah-Stock made her in-ring debut at an NXT house show on March 30, 2024. She defeated Breanna Covington on the show.

The 30-year-old made history at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 by becoming the first-ever Black female athlete to win gold in women’s freestyle wrestling. She took the top spot in the women’s freestyle 68-kilogram competition. Mensah-Stock signed with WWE in May 2023 and reported to the WWE Performance Center that summer.

Three matches were taped for Level Up on Tuesday night in Orlando. Spoilers from the taping are available below.
