Tanga Loa makes WWE debut at Backlash, joins The Bloodline

The Bloodline got an unexpected new addition at Backlash.

At Saturday’s event in France, Tanga Loa made his WWE debut by helping the new-look Bloodline (Solo Sikoa & Tama Tonga) defeat Kevin Owens & Randy Orton in a street fight. Loa is Tonga’s brother. They were seven-time tag team champions together as the Guerrillas of Destiny in NJPW.

The 40-year-old Loa’s last match for NJPW took place on March 31. There wasn’t any speculation going into Backlash that he would be able to join WWE.

Prior to his eight-year run in NJPW, Loa wrestled in NXT as Camacho.

Owens was about to pin Tonga at Backlash before Loa got involved. Owens gave Tonga a brainbuster off the top rope onto a pile of chairs. He went for the cover, but Loa pulled the referee out of the ring. Loa struck both Owens and Orton with the steel steps, leading to Sikoa & Tonga getting the victory with Sikoa pinning Owens.

Since WrestleMania, The Bloodline’s story has seen Sikoa seemingly put himself in charge of the faction with Roman Reigns not around. He’s added both Tonga and Loa to The Bloodline while kicking Jimmy Uso out of it.

Paul Heyman, who has been worried about the changes to The Bloodline, said on SmackDown that he hasn’t talked to Reigns since WrestleMania. Heyman said he made the decision to pull Reigns out of the WWE Draft on his own because he couldn’t subject Reigns to the chaos that’s going on within The Bloodline right now.

Backlash was Tonga’s first televised match for WWE. It wasn’t originally announced as a street fight, but SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis added the stipulation after the teams got into a wild brawl before the bell rang.

Tonga & Loa are sons of pro wrestling legend Haku.

Great-O-Khan retains KOPW title in Rural Revitalization match

Great-O-Khan retained the provisional KOPW title on Sunday.

He defeated Tanga Loa in a Rural Revitalization in Hamamatsu match on the March 31 Road to Sakura Genesis event. The unique match type featured best-two-of-three falls rules and a five-minute eating contest as the second fall.

The rules for the first round were that every pin attempt was worth one point. Loa ended up winning the round 9-8.

The food eaten for the second fall was originally supposed to be freshwater unagi (eel), which Hamamatsu is famous for. However, a late decision saw gyoza dumplings, another local delicacy, replace eel as the featured food.

With 30 seconds left, Loa began to slow down, needing sips of water to continue. After the five minutes expired, officials entered the ring to see how much eel each wrestler had consumed and awarded the fall to Khan.

The third fall was a strap match. Both wrestlers appeared to be showing the effects of having eaten too much during the second fall. It appeared as though either could vomit at any point. Khan would eventually hit an Eliminator and touch all four corners for the win.

The champion then addressed the crowd following his victory. NJPW1972.com wrote of his speech:

O-Khan proudly claimed that a new era, that with pro-wrestling being equated with himself, had already begun. O-Khan stated that it all began with Japan, and with the local areas; a grass roots movement that he was leading with a determination to make KOPW the most famed, and the most entertaining title in wrestling. As the loyal subjects bowed to their Dominator, the victorious O-Khan took his title to the next ground of conquest.

Sunday’s show did not air live on New Japan World but is now available on-demand. The full results are below.

Rural Revitalization match official for NJPW Road to Sakura Genesis

Eel will be eaten in Hamamatsu on Sunday.

Some unique rules have been made official for this weekend’s KOPW provisional title match between Great-O-Khan and Tanga Loa. A fan vote conducted on Wednesday confirmed it will be a “Rural Revitalization in Hamamatsu Match.”

The match will be contested under best-two-of-three falls, with the second fall being a five-minute eating contest.

The rules on NJPW1972.com read:

Round 1: ten minute most covers match (every pinfall attempt results in one point)

Round 2: five minute eel eating contest

Round 3: strap match (competitors joined with a strap, and must touch all four corners consecutively)

Hamamatsu is famous for its freshwater Unagi (eel) from nearby Lake Hamana. A travel guide for Hamamatsu reads, “If you hear Hamamatsu, you think of eel.”

The unique match type was suggested by Khan and earned 72 percent of the votes. Loa’s camp pitched a “King of Kaiju” match with rules resembling a traditional Texas Death Match.

14,704 fans voted in the social media poll, with 10,624 votes cast for the Rural Revitalization rules.

The Road to Sakura Genesis event on Sunday, March 31 will not air live on New Japan World but will be available on-demand at a later date, which NJPW1972.com says is only being done at Khan’s request.

The only way to watch live will be in person March 31, but thanks to the personal request of Great-O-Khan, the match will air on NJPW World at a later date!

Great-O-Khan, Tanga Loa choose KOPW stipulations for Road to Sakura Genesis

Great-O-Khan and Tanga Loa have chosen stipulations for their upcoming KOPW match.

Khan is scheduled to defend his interim KOPW title against Loa in Hamamatsu on Sunday. As per the championship rules, both competitors have submitted their proposed match stipulations for fans to vote on in a social media poll.

Loa was represented by Jado at a press conference on March 25. His camp has proposed a “King of Kaiju” match.

NJPW1972.com described the match type as:

Much like a classical Texas Deathmatch, the bout will see competitors look to score a pinfall, after which a ten count will be applied, the last standing being the winner

Khan reportedly commented, “That’s something an ape would think up” upon hearing the proposed stipulation.

Khan then stated he wants to bring “renewed interest in NJPW events in local areas of Japan” before proposing a “Rural Revitalization Match in Hamamatsu.” The match type follows best-two-of-three falls rules, with the second fall promoting Hamamatsu’s local cuisine.

NJPW1972.com describes the match type as:

The match will be a ‘two out of three falls’ bout, but with very different interpretations of falls.

Round one will be under ten minute time limit most covers rules. Every pinfall attempt will count as one point in the scenario.

Round two will be an eating contest, with the local specialty of eel being the focus for five minutes.

Round three will see the two connected via a strap with the winner having to touch all four corners consecutively to win.

Voting will begin at 10 a.m. Japan Standard Time on March 31.

Sunday’s show is not scheduled to air live on New Japan World. However, it will likely be available on-demand at a later date.

KOPW title match set for NJPW Road to Sakura Genesis

A title match is set to take place on NJPW’s Road to Sakura Genesis tour.

NJPW has announced that Great-O-Khan will defend his KOPW 2024 Championship against Tanga Loa in Hamamatsu on Sunday, March 31. It’s a Road to Sakura Genesis event that will not be airing live on NJPW World.

The stipulation options for the match have not been revealed yet. In KOPW title matches, the competitors each propose a rule set for the match. A fan vote then determines which stipulation the match is held under.

NJPW wrote:

Since winning the championship during the Road to New Beginning, O-Khan has stated loud and proud that he would be taking the title to be defended around the country and not simply at the big tour ending dates. True to his word, this KOPW title match is set for March 31’s Road To live event, and the only way to watch the match as it happens will be in person at the venue. What rules will the competitors choose, and how will the bout play out?

Great-O-Khan has been provisional KOPW Champion since winning the title from Taiji Ishimori this January. Taichi had ended 2023 as the official KOPW Champion for that year.

Loa defeated Great-O-Khan when they faced off in the first round of the New Japan Cup. Loa later challenged Great-O-Khan to this KOPW title bout.

Updated card for NJPW Power Struggle

NJPW has confirmed a few new additions to the card for Power Struggle.

After being set up at Royal Quest, NJPW has officially announced Will Ospreay vs. Shota Umino and Jon Moxley vs. Great-O-Khan for Power Struggle. Ospreay is defending the IWGP United Kingdom/United States Championship in the match against Umino.

David Finlay vs. Tanga Loa has also been announced for Power Struggle. At Destruction in Ryogoku last week, Finlay lost the NEVER Openweight Championship to Loa’s family member and tag team partner Tama Tonga.

Loa then pinned Finlay in a six-man tag team match at Royal Quest over the weekend.

NJPW wrote:

Meanwhile David Finlay will take on Tanga Loa in singles action. Less than one week after he lost the NEVER Openweight Championship to Tama Tonga in Ryogoku, Finlay was again reeling from a loss to Loa in tag competition in London. A frustrated and humiliated Finlay demanded this singles match to gain fast and full revenge, but could the Silverback beat the Rebel again?

Power Struggle is taking place in Osaka on Saturday, November 4. The updated lineup for the show is listed below:

  • IWGP United Kingdom/United States Champion Will Ospreay defends against Shota Umino
  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi defends against Taiji Ishimori
  • NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Champions Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii defend against Zack Sabre Jr., Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls
  • Jon Moxley vs. Great-O-Khan
  • Super Junior Tag League finals
  • SANADA & Yuya Uemura vs. Tetsuya Naito & Yota Tsuji
  • David Finlay vs. Tanga Loa

NJPW’s Tanga Loa to miss rest of 2022 following MCL surgery

Guerrillas of Destiny member Tanga Loa is going to be out for the rest of the year.

The 39-year-old hasn’t wrestled since NJPW Capital Collision on May 14. NJPW announced on June 1 that Loa had been pulled from the Best of the Super Jr. Finals card after suffering a knee injury.

Tama Tonga provided an update on his brother during an episode of Tama’s Island released on Sunday.

“He’s been injured, tore his MCL and just had surgery a couple of months ago. So, he’ll be out for the rest of the year but he’s making progress. He isn’t able to run yet but he’s able to walk and do some stuff but just the running part is the hardest part right now. He’s doing well, he’s moving forward. Looking forward to having him come back,” Tonga said.

The news means Loa is likely to miss NJPW’s World Tag League. The tournament kicks off on November 21. The Guerillas of Destiny won the 2020 World Tag League after defeating Juice Robinson & David Finlay in the finals.

Ospreay, Anderson, Loa removed from NJPW Super Junior finals

Will Ospreay, Karl Anderson, and Tanga Loa are all out of the Best of the Super Junior finals on on June 3.

NJPW announced tonight that Ospreay is continuing to recover from an kidney infection, while Anderson has tested positive for COVID-19. Loa has suffered a right knee injury. All three were previously announced for the card.

The finals of this year’s tournament was determined on a show that was held earlier today. It will be Hiromu Takahashi (winner of the A Block) vs. El Desperado (winner of the B Block), with the winner likely getting an IWGP Junior Heavyweight title shot at Dominion, which takes place on June 12.

Here is the updated lineup for this year’s finals:

  • Hiromu Takahashi vs. El Desperado in the finals of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament.
  • Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano, Tama Tonga, and Jado vs. Jay White, Doc Gallows, Taiji Ishimori, and Gedo
  • Jeff Cobb, Great-O-Khan, and Aaron Henare vs. Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens, and El Phantasmo
  • Tomoaki Honma vs. Juice Robinson
  • Ryusuke Taguchi and Master Wato vs. Francesco Akira and TJP
  • Robbie Eagles, YOH, Titan, and Clark Connors vs. El Lindaman, Ace Austin, Wheeler Yuta, and Alex Zayne

The Good Brothers appear at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 2022

The Good Brothers made an appearance at tonight’s NJPW Wrestling Dontaku, attacking the Guerillas of Destiny.

After Tama Tonga won the NEVER Openweight championship from EVIL on tonight’s show, the Good Brothers immediately rushed to the ring and attacked Tonga. Tanga Loa came down to the ring to aid his brother, but was taken out by the duo. Karl Anderson held the NEVER Openweight title, signaling he wanted the next title shot. He then gave the gun stun to Tonga on the championship belt.

The Good Brothers faced The Guerillas of Destiny back at Impact’s No Surrender event in February. During the match, Jay White turned on GoD, giving the bladerunner to Tonga. This allowed The Good Brothers to win the match and rejoin the Bullet Club, while Guerillas of Destiny were officially kicked out of the group.

Since being released from WWE in 2020, The Good Brothers have worked primarily for Impact Wrestling. They have also made appearances on New Japan Strong, most recently at Windy City Riot, where they teamed with Chris Bey, El Phantasmo, Hikuleo, and Scott Norton to defeat United Empire’s Aaron Henare, Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb, Kyle Fletcher, Mark Davis, and TJP.

Guerillas of Destiny to make Impact Wrestling debut

NJPW’s Guerillas of Destiny Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa are set to make their Impact Wrestling debut.

Impact announced today that Tonga and Loa will be part of the January 21 and January 22 television tapings in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

GOD’s announcement comes on the heels of word that fellow NJPW and Bullet Club member Jay White will be returning to Impact at the same tapings. Some sort of Bullet Club faction war has been teased at different times on social media between GOD, White, and former Bullet Club members Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows.

Tonga and Loa are seven-time IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions in NJPW, former ROH World Tag Team Champions, and have held the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship on four separate occasions with different members of Bullet Club. They won NJPW’s most prestigious tag team tournament, World Tag League, in 2020.

GOD come from wrestling royalty, as they are the sons of former WWF and WCW talent King Haku.

Yuji Nagata, Guerillas of Destiny appear at NJPW Resurgence

Yuji Nagata and The Guerillas of Destiny made surprise appearances at tonight’s NJPW Resurgence event in Los Angeles.

Nagata appeared as Jon Moxley’s mystery partner against Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson. Nagata ultimately ate the pin in the match after a Good Brothers Magic Killer.

Nagata and Moxley had previously faced off on the May 12, 2021 edition of AEW Dynamite, a match that Moxley won.

Following the match, Gallows and Anderson cut a promo. They were still speaking when the microphone was cut off. Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa of G.O.D. appeared and made their way to the ring to confront Gallows and Anderson. There was no physicality in the angle, as the two teams simply stared at each other before The Good Brothers left the ring.

Tonga and Loa are current members of Bullet Club, while Gallows and Anderson were members of the faction during their first NJPW run. Since returning to the promotion earlier this year, their status with the group has been unclear.

New champions crowned at NJPW Road to Dominion

New IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions were crowned at today’s NJPW Road to Dominion event in Korakuen Hall.

Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa to regain the titles.

Tonga and Loa had defeated Taichi and Sabre at Wrestle Kingdom 15 on January 4 to win the titles, then successfully defended the belts in a rematch at The New Beginning in Hiroshima on February 10.

The teams have continued to feud over the last several months. Taichi and Tonga faced each other in a ladder match for control of the iron fingers on night one of Wrestling Dontaku on May 3.

Sabre and Loa faced off that night as well, with the stipulation that if Sabre lost, he and Taichi could never challenge for the titles again, but if he won, he and Taichi would get another rematch.

The win marked Taichi and Sabre’s first win over G.O.D. in a two-on-two tag match, with Tonga and Loa having won their previous five meetings.

NJPW Road to Dominion results: IWGP Tag Team title match

Kazuchika Okada returned to action in the semi-main event after missing the Road to Wrestle Grand Slam events.

Report —

Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru defeated YOH, SHO & Yuya Uemura (11:36)

This was a good opener. Suzuki did some cool spots and Uemura and YOH were given the opportunity to shine. SHO’s role was to sell.

YOH, SHO and Uemura fought off a sneak attack by Suzuki-gun at the opening bell. Suzuki-gun tried a second time and succeeded. SHO was cut off and worked over.

Suzuki got SHO in a heel hook. Uemura tried to make the save, but Suzuki put him in a heel hook as well, while still keeping the hold on SHO.

SHO came back with a double spear to Desperado and Kanemaru. YOH got a hot tag and had an extended exchange with Desperado. YOH hit a Pele kick into a double down. YOH tagged Uemura. Uemura and SHO doubled up on Desperado.

Desperado blocked an overhook suplex and hit Uemura with a spinebuster. YOH saved as Desperado tried Pinche Loco on Uemura. Uemura cradled Desperado for a two count.

Desperado used the threat of a ref bump to hit a right hand to Uemura. He followed with Pinche Loco and got the pin.

EVIL, Chase Owens, Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo (w/Dick Togo) defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomoaki Honma, Tiger Mask & Ryusuke Taguchi (12:38)

This was kind of a mess. Not enough comedy to be a good comedy match, not enough good wrestling to be a good wrestling match.

Hontai briefly got the advantage on Owens. Honma tagged in and was quickly cut off and worked over. Taguchi got a tag and ran wild with hip attacks.

Tanahashi and EVIL tagged in for the first real wrestling of the match. Togo tripped Tana from the floor. Tana hit two twist and shouts. He went for a third, but EVIL turned it into a fisherman buster.

Tiger and Ishimori got tags. Tiger hit a Tiger superplex for a near fall. ELP jumped in for an airplane spin neckbreaker, then Ishimori followed with a Bloody Cross to pin Tiger.

Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan defeated Kota Ibushi & Yota Tsuji (12:31)

Cobb went after Ibushi before the opening bell and the match started off hot. They did a couple of teases of signature spots, then Cobb rolled outside to slow the pace. O-Khan and Tsuji got tags.

O-Khan quickly cut Tsuji off with a back elbow and a slam. O-Khan hit Mongolian chops and a double palm strike to the chest. Cobb tagged in for an impressive throw. O-Khan tagged back in and sat on Tsuji’s neck in the corner. Ibushi tried to save Tsuji, but he was sent outside.

Cobb came back in for a delayed vertical suplex and a near fall. Tsuji hit a dropkick to Cobb for a hope spot. A second dropkick allowed him to tag Ibushi.

Ibushi hit a springboard dropkick and a plancha to Cobb. He nailed O-Khan with a back elbow on the outside, then peppered Cobb with kicks inside. Ibushi hit a standing moonsault for a two count.

Ibushi called for Kamigoye. O-Khan saved Cobb, then Cobb hit a pop-up powerslam for a near fall. Cobb called for the Cobbgoye. Ibushi blocked, but Cobb hit a lariat. O-Khan tagged in. He used a standing choke. Ibushi came back with a flying mid kick.

Tsuji tagged in to meet his doom. He hit a series of strikes to O-Khan. O-Khan fired back with a chop. Tsuji hit a tackle and a splash for a near fall. Tsuji went for a crab, but O-Khan blocked and used a triangle. Tsuji slid out and hit a spear.

Cobb saved O-Khan. Cobb and O-Khan doubled up on Tsuji. O-Khan hit a facebuster for a two count as Ibushi saved. Tsuji used two quick cradles for near falls. He went for a third, but O-Khan caught him in the claw and hit the Eliminator for the pin.

Ibushi and Cobb stared each other down after the match, but there was no big angle here.

***** Intermission *****

Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI defeated Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito, SANADA & BUSHI (14:31)

This looked like it would be the best match on the show on paper. Had they been in the main event spot and given ten more minutes, they really could have done something special. Still, this was very good.

Shingo and Okada began. Shingo hit a chop. Okada took Shingo down with a snapmare, then sent him rolling outside after a sliding dropkick. They clearly didn’t want to give away too much this early.

YH and BUSHI tagged in. BUSHI hit a rana and a dropkick and YH was cut off quickly. LIJ traded tags as they worked on YH. Okada, Ishii and Goto saved for YH and helped him cut Naito off. YH and Naito traded chops. Ishii tagged in and backed Naito into the corner. Naito hit a series of forearms. Ishii no-sold, then hit a brutal series of chops and forearms.

Naito and Ishii traded forearms in the center of the ring. SANADA and Goto jumped in. Naito used the distraction to hit Ishii with a neckbreaker and a dropkick for a double down.

Okada and Shingo got tags. Shingo hit a vertical suplex for a two count. Okada sold that big. Okada ducked a lariat and hit a running back elbow. He hit a back elbow in the corner and a DDT for a near fall.

Shingo blocked the air raid crash neckbreaker. They traded strikes. Okada missed a dropkick. Shingo missed a sliding lariat. Shingo ran off the ropes into an Okada dropkick. This was more what would you expect from a tag preview of a big singles match. Good stuff.

BUSHI and Goto tagged in. Ishii and YH cleared the LIJ apron and they went 3-on-1 against BUSHI. BUSHI blocked an ushigoroshi attempt and hit a backstabber to Goto. SANADA got a tag. Shingo, Naito and SANADA went 3-on-1 against Goto. SANADA hit a TKO for a near fall as Okada made the save.

SANADA rolled through off a missed moonsault. Everyone jumped in for a big move. Naito took a flip bump for a YH lariat.

YH hit a headhunter to SANADA, then Goto cradled SANADA for the flash pin.

IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. (w/Miho Abe & DOUKI) defeated Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa (w/Jado) to win the titles (26:08)

This was absolute madness. It was probably the best match these two teams have had this year. Technically it was far from a masterpiece, but it was a wild brawl between two teams who hate each other.

Jado and DOUKI made a big show of going to the back before the match began, virtually assuring their involvement later.

Tonga and Loa tried a double team on Taichi at the outset, but he fought them off. With that plan failing, then went after Miho Abe on the floor. Taichi went to fight for his wife’s honor. Tama grabbed her and forced her to watch as Loa attacked Taichi. Sabre tried to save, but got sent into the barricade.

Taichi made it back in after a countout tease. He came back with an axe bomber to Tama. Loa and Sabre tagged in. Sabre used an octopus hold. Loa reached the ropes to force a break. Sabre hit a wild tornado DDT and tagged Taichi.

Taichi hammered away at Loa with kicks. He dared Loa to strike with him, so Loa dropped him with a heavy forearm. They continued to trade. Both hit gamengiri kicks. Sabre used a neck crank on an interfering Tonga. Loa tackled Sabre. Taichi hit a backdrop suplex to Loa for a double down. Loa used an OJK. Taichi fought for a rope break. Taichi hit a rolling elbow.

Tama and Sabre got tags. Sabre used Barry from Eastenders. Jado ran in and took the ref. Gedo ran in with brass knuckles. DOUKI ran in and slipped while trying a springboard attack to Gedo. DOUKI dragged Jado to the back. Loa saved for Tama.

G.O.D. hit a Tongan Twist to Sabre for a near fall. Tama hit an assisted gun Stun for a near fall with Taichi saving Sabre. G.O.D. hit Taichi with a Magic Killer. Loa hit a diving headbutt to Sabre. Tonga hit a frog splash for a near fall.

G.O.D. tried a super powerbomb on Sabre, but he hit a rana out of it. Taichi hit a double axe bomber to G.O.D., then revived Sabre. Sabre hit a PK to Tonga for a two count. Taichi and Sabre went for Zack Mephisto, but Loa saved. Loa got hit with Zack Mephisto.

Tonga hit a low blow to Taichi and rolled Sabre up for a two count. Sabre blocked a Gun Stun and applied a choke to Tonga. Taichi jumped in for a gamengiri.

Sabre and Taichi hit a Tensho Zack Driver to Tonga, then Sabre covered for the pin.

Sabre and Taichi cut short promos after the match, then Miho Abe celebrated with the titles to close the show.

Loa proposed the stipulation on Tuesday’s Road to Wrestling Dontaku event at Korakuen Hall after pinning Sabre in a trios match.
