Ladder match to determine next NXT Tag Team Champions

The next NXT Tag Team Champions will be crowned in a ladder match at TakeOver XXV.

William Regal announced on tonight’s episode of NXT that Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch, The Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish), The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford), and The Forgotten Sons (Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler) will face off in a ladder match for the vacant titles at TakeOver XXV. The special is taking place at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Saturday, June 1.

The match was first announced at this month’s NXT television tapings, though the ladder stipulation wasn’t confirmed until now.

The NXT Tag Team titles were vacated after The Viking Raiders were called up to Raw in this year’s Superstar Shake-up.

On the NXT TV episode that aired last week, The Viking Raiders bowed to the fans and left the titles in the ring. That came after their title defense against The Street Profits ended in a no contest when The Forgotten Sons got involved and started a brawl, which also included Lorcan & Burch.

Velveteen Dream defending his North American Championship against Tyler Breeze was also announced for TakeOver XXV tonight, along with a singles match between Matt Riddle and Roderick Strong. NXT Champion Johnny Gargano will defend his title against Adam Cole at the special, and Io Shirai will challenge for Shayna Baszler’s Women’s Championship.

NXT TakeOver New York sees two title changes

Image: WWE.com

Johnny Gargano is the new NXT Champion after outlasting Adam Cole in a 2-out-of-3 falls match at NXT TakeOver New York Friday night, capping an outstanding night of in-ring action.

After taking out the Undisputed Era at ringside, Gargano got hit with two Cole superkicks and the Last Shot but kicked out at two. Another Last Shot attempt missed and Gargano clamped on the Gargano Escape. Cole almost made the ropes, but Gargano rolled both men over and kept the Escape tight for the tapout in the third and final fall to send the Barclays Center into a euphoric state.

With the win, Gargano becomes the first-ever NXT Triple Crown winner (main title, North American title, tag team titles). The title was vacated after Tommaso Ciampa had to undergo neck surgery.

The other title change was a historic one as WALTER defeated Pete Dunne, the longest reigning current champion in the entire company, to become the NXT UK Champion in a hard hitting, spectacular match.

The end came when WALTER gave Dunne a powerbomb off the top rope after Dunne had a triangle locked on. WALTER then hit a big splash off the top to get the pin after a long and grueling affair, ending Dunne’s 685-day run as titleholder.

In the three other title matches:

– Shayna Baszler retained her NXT women’s title by submitting Bianca Belair with a rear naked choke in a fatal four way that also featured Kairi Sane and Io Shirai.

– The War Raiders retained their NXT tag team titles by fending off Ricochet and Aleister Black in the show opener, effectively putting an end to the duo’s NXT run.

– Velveteen Dream defeated Matt Riddle via pinfall to retain his North American title in another sensational match.

If you missed the show, catch up here.

NXT TakeOver confirmed for June in San Jose

Before he closed out Thursday’s NXT conference call, WWE COO Paul “HHH” Levesque confirmed NXT is returning to San Jose, CA, on Saturday, June 8th.

Without explicitly saying it’s a TakeOver event, WWE confirmed it will be.

The event will be at the SJSU Event Center where the brand has previously held TV tapings and house shows.

“(San Jose) is a place where before we were even doing TakeOvers, we kind of did the first WrestleMania weekend event where we were just testing the waters. it sold out and became this epic event that really set the brand in motion. I’m really excited to go back there on June 8, separate from everything else, and other pay-per-views around it, and put on an event that is epic and say thank you to that location for getting us off to such a great start,” he said.

From a recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote:

“The impression we were given is that the TakeOver show would be held on June 8th at San Jose State University, using the 5000 seat arena where the show that spawned the TakeOver concept took place when the company sold out an event the Friday night before WrestleMania in Santa Clara on March 27, 2015.

That event wasn’t a TakeOver show, but the success in selling the event out both spawned the concept being held in conjunction with the major PPVs, and also springboarded the change in the push of women’s wrestling when the Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks match tore down the house and got a bigger reaction than the Finn Balor vs. Neville main event.

San Jose has remained a strong NXT market and such a show would easily sell out a building of that size. It’s also convenient logistically because Raw two nights later will be in the larger SAP Center in San Jose, so much of the production crew can come to town and stay there for television Monday and then Smackdown in Sacramento on Tuesday, rather than being brought in specifically for a TakeOver special.”

HHH on Ciampa’s WWE call-up, TakeOver, Batista at WrestleMania

On Thursday, Paul “HHH” Levesque held his traditional pre-NXT TakeOver conference call, going over a variety of subjects.

You can listen to the call right now by just clicking that red button below.

Among the things HHH discussed:

  • The situation around Tommaso Ciampa’s call-up despite a neck injury he was dealing with
  • How he and Vince McMahon work together on WWE call-ups
  • Why Keith Lee vs. Donovan Dijakovic wasn’t on TakeOver and whether Lee is injured
  • Why managers are now becoming a thing in NXT
  • Whether NXT women’s tag team titles are on the horizon
  • Thoughts on his WrestleMania match against Dave Bautista

Women’s title match set for NXT TakeOver: New York

Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, and Kairi Sane will all be challenging for the NXT Women’s Championship at next month’s TakeOver special.

Shayna Baszler defending her NXT Women’s title against Shirai, Belair, and Sane in a fatal four-way match has been announced for TakeOver: New York. The event is taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 5, which is the Friday of WrestleMania week.

The match was announced after an angle on this week’s episode of NXT TV. Baszler interrupted Shirai and Belair’s number one contender’s match and caused it to end in a no contest.

Baszler was on commentary for the match and then left the announce table to attack both Shirai and Belair. Sane tried to make the save, but the angle ended with Baszler having choked out all three with the Kirifuda Clutch.

Baszler is a two-time NXT Women’s Champion. Her current reign began when she defeated Sane for the title at Evolution in October 2018. At TakeOver: Phoenix this January, Baszler retained her title by defeating Belair.

NXT’s final television tapings before TakeOver: New York took place on Wednesday night.

New NXT Champion to be crowned at TakeOver: New York

Note: the following post contains spoilers from tonight’s NXT tapings at Full Sail University.

The fate of the NXT title match at Takeover: New York has been determined, as a new challenger will face Johnny Gargano for the vacant title.

Triple H made the announcement at tonight’s NXT TV tapings at Full Sail University. He opened the show carrying the NXT Championship with him. He announced that a fatal five-way match between Ricochet, Adam Cole, Aleister Black, Velveteen Dream and Matt Riddle would take place tonight, and the winner of that match would face Gargano at TakeOver in a 2 out of 3 falls match.

The match was won by Adam Cole, who pinned Ricochet with a shining wizard to advance.

Tomasso Ciampa, the previous champion, underwent neck surgery last week and will be out of action for the foreseeable future. The feud between former tag team partners Gargano and Ciampa came to a head at the last set of tapings, coming to blows after a temporary reunification. It was previously set to lead to a singles match between the two at TakeOver.

The former DIY had also been called up to the WWE main roster last month and had been appearing on television as tag team partners until Ciampa was taken off the road towards the end of February due to injury. Gargano hasn’t been on main roster television since.

Women’s title match for TakeOver: Phoenix revealed at NXT TV tapings

Editor’s note: This article references results from NXT television episodes that have yet to air.

The first match is set for NXT’s Royal Rumble weekend TakeOver special.

Bianca Belair defeated Lacey Evans, Io Shirai, and Mia Yim in a fatal four-way number one contender’s match at tonight’s NXT television tapings and will challenge for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver: Phoenix. Belair pinned Evans to win tonight’s match.

Baszler vs. Belair will be Belair’s first match on a TakeOver special. Belair’s character on NXT TV is that she’s undefeated.

Baszler is a two-time NXT Women’s Champion. She regained the title from Kairi Sane at last month’s WWE Evolution pay-per-view and then retained against Sane in a two-out-of-three falls match at NXT TakeOver: WarGames II during Survivor Series weekend.

The Talking Stick Resort Arena will host NXT TakeOver: Phoenix on January 26, 2019. The Royal Rumble is taking place at Chase Field in Phoenix on January 27.

NXT TakeOver Brooklyn IV live results: Ciampa vs. Gargano

Images: WWE

NXT’s fourth annual SummerSlam weekend special takes place tonight as the Barclays Center hosts TakeOver: Brooklyn.

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano are set to headline their third straight TakeOver. They’ll face off in a last man standing match for Ciampa’s NXT Championship after an originally planned triple threat match fell through due to an injury to Aleister Black.

NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler will defend her title against Kairi Sane in a rematch from last year’s Mae Young Classic finals. The NXT Tag Team Championship match will also be a rematch, with The Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong) and Moustache Mountain (Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) continuing their rivalry.

Undisputed Era member Adam Cole will put his NXT North American Championship on the line against Ricochet. Plus, Velveteen Dream takes on EC3.

The TakeOver pre-show will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern time prior to the card starting at 7 p.m.

**********

The first televised WWE event of SummerSlam weekend began with the NXT TakeOver Pre-Show. The panel consists of host Charly Caruso alongside Sam Roberts and Pat McAfee. Mike Rome was also part of the broadcast team as a rovering reporter.

Mostly just hype and hard sell on the pre-show so far. McAfee was way over the top — even by WWE standards.

Ricochet joined the pre-show for a split-screen interview. Caruso asked how he was feeling. Ricochet said his match tonight is the moment he has been working towards during his entire 15-year career. At the end of the day, Ricochet says he knows he can win. Ricochet was all smiles throughout the segment.

Roberts asked Ricochet if he thought he was more special than Adam Cole. This relates to Cole in storyline saying he was more special than Ricochet. Answering Roberts question, Ricochet said he was better than Cole. McAfee then asked a rambling question about feeling pressure. Ricochet admitted he felt pressure. He concluded by vowing to win the NXT North American Championship tonight.

William Regal joined the panel to discuss the Aleister Black injury angle. He was very serious, and so was the rest of the panel — except McAfee. He joked. Roberts chided McAfee for it.

Mauro Ranallo, Percy Watson, and Nigel McGuinness were on commentary for the broadcast. The live card begins with a tag team title match.

NXT Tag Team Champions Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong) defeated Moustache Mountain (Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) to retain their titles

O’Reilly pinned Seven in a fantastic match. They all had a slugfest at the outset. Moustache Mountain gained an early advantage until Strong cut off Seven. Strong & O’Reilly then targeted Seven. Bate was a house of fire when he tagged in. With O’Reilly on Bate’s back applying a sleeper, Bate still managed to suplex Strong in a feat of strength. Strong soon caught Bate with a lariat to change the momentum.

Undisputed Era began to work over Bate. Strong at one point used a Gory Special. The champions made quick tags and cut the ring in half. Bate sent both O’Reilly and Strong sailing over the top rope in a sequence that led to a hot tag. Seven cleaned house and traded near falls with Undisputed Era. Bate tried to make a save to no avail — not yet at least. He would soon try again.

Strong applied a Boston crab on Seven. Meanwhile, O’Reilly caught Bate with a triangle. Bate then deadlifted O’Reilly into a powerbomb on Strong to break the crab. The crowd popped huge for that spot. Moments later, Bate suplexed Undisputed Era on to each other. Bate followed with a dive over the ropes to the floor. Rolling Strong back in the ring, Bate delivered the Tyler Driver ’97 for a two and a half count. Another huge pop.

O’Reilly applied an ankle lock on Bate. This set up a tease of Seven throwing in the towel — spoofing a finish in the previous match in the rivalry. Seven got a hot tag instead. Moustache Mountain ran wild and hit their double-team finisher of a flying kneedrop combined with a Burning Hammer on O’Reilly — but he kicked out. The closing moments were wild, and the crowd was rabid.

Strong cut off Bate with a running knee strike to dispatch him. Outnumbered, Seven became prey. Undisputed Era used Total Elimination, and O’Reilly covered Seven for the pinfall. What this match lacked in drama compared to their last meeting on NXT TV, it made up for in action. Great way to start the show.

Velveteen Dream defeated EC3

Dream pinned EC3 with a Dream Valley Driver and a flying elbow drop. EC3 dominated in the early portion of the match. Dream countered the onslaught with a twisting DDT outside on the metal ramp. Dream worked the neck when they returmed to the ring. EC3 eventually made a comeback. The first half was plodding.

They would trade near falls and big moves down the stretch. EC3 superplexed Dream — but EC3 sold his neck upon impact. Dream countered moments later to deliver a Dream Valley Driver for a two count. Somewhere in there EC3 bled from a cut over his eye. After a Dream Valley Driver on the apron, Dream then dropped a flying elbow. Dream folled EC3 back inside the ropes to cover him for the pin.

Matt Riddle was shown sitting in the crowd. So he has likely indeed signed with WWE.

Ricochet defeated NXT North American Champion Adam Cole to win the title

Ricochet pinned Cole with a 630 splash at the conclusion of an excellent match. They more than delivered. This was breathtaking at times. It is definitely worth going out of your way to see.

Early exchanges relied on basic wrestling holds. Ricochet then started flying around. Cole was backpedaling until he sent Ricochet crashing to the floor. Cole grounded Ricochet — but not for long. Ricochet would dive outside the ring with a Fosbury Flop. A springboard uppercut followed for a near fall. Ricochet then launched into a flurry of flight. He springboarded into a corkscrew moonsault, and then did another even more spectacular than the first. Cole somehow kicked out.

Cole soon cut off Ricochet with a backstabber. Ricochet retaliated with more of his aerial arsenal. When Ricochet went for a quebrada, Cole cut him down with a superkick out of nowhere. That was an amazing sight. Cole followed with a ushigoroshi for a two count. The crowd was going crazy by this point.

They traded more near falls with dazzling highspots. Ricochet did a reverse rana that spiked Cole. A moment later, Ricochet leapt over the ropes for a Frankensteiner from the apron to the floor. Ricochet rolled Cole back into the ring to set up his finisher. Ricochet hit the 630 splash to score the pin and win the title.

Kairi Sane defeated NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler to win the title

Sane pinned Baszler while countering a choke into a cover. They told a great story in a match that was arguably better than their previous bout last year in the finals of the Mae Young Classic. Baszler looked strong despite losing. Sane looked like a superstar in winning. The Horsewomen — including Ronda Rousey — were front row ringside to cheer on Baszler.

Sane was out-wrestling the submission specialist as the match began. Baszler turned vicious to counter Sane. Baszler would then target a leg. She twisted and stomped on the leg. Baszler briefly stopped to mock Sane. Showing fighting spirit, Sane fired up with strikes. A spinning back fist led to two rolling neckbreakers. Baszler caught Sane on the top rope for an avalanche gutwrench suplex. A knee strike by Baszler got a two count.

Sane countered a suplex and speared Baszler. Sane jumped off the top with a flying elbow drop onto the back of Baszler. Baszler rolled outside. Sane leaped off the top to the outside with flying body press. Baszler kicked out after a flying elbow drop from Sane. Baszler countered The Anchor by applying the rear naked choke. Sane escaped. Baszler applied a leglock — then a counter led to Sane applying The Anchor. Baszler got a rope break.

For the finish, Sane went for another flying elbow drop. Baszler blocked the elbow and applied a choke. Sane fell backwards to cover Baszler for a pinfall to win the title. The last spot was similar to the finish Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper at WrestleMania VIII — or Hart vs. Steve Austin at Survivor Series. Great finish to a trememdous match.

NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa defeated Johnny Gargano to retain the title in a last man standing match

Ciampa retained when Gargano failed to answer the ten count. The rules — or lack thereof — were from the old school Texas Death Match playbook. At the finish, Gargano hit a running knee strike only to injure his knee in the process. Therefore, he was unable to stand. They had a great match much like their previous matches. They had callbacks that played on their rivalry.

Gargano attacked Ciampa before the bell. They brawled on the floor. Ciampa rammed Gargano into the ring steps. For a receipt, Gargano threw Ciampa into the barricade. Gargano pulled the mats off the concrete floor. Ciampa gouged the eyes and went for a draping DDT. Gargano countered by ramming Ciampa into the ring post. Gargano then cleared off an announce desk. He went to give Ciampa a piledriver on the desk. Ciampa instead scooped him up for an Air Raid Crash through an adjacent desk.

A chair came into play. Gargano cut off Ciampa by hitting him in the knee with the chair. Gargano repeatedly hit Ciampa with chairshots. Ciampa was able to counter by applying a sleeper hold. Ciampa put Gargano to sleep. Gargano was able to stand and break the count at six. Ciampa quickly swooped in to again apply the sleeper. Gargano escaped to send Ciampa like a lawn dart into a chair wedged in a corner.

Gargano rolled out of the ring for some DIY remodeling. He stacked two tables on top of each other — with table legs sticking upward on one table. Ciampa rained down chairshots on him. Ciampa followed with a trifecta of Project Ciampas. He then sat down in a chair while the referee began counting. Gargano broke the count and superkicked Ciampa out of his seat.

A “yay/boo” slugfest developed. That led into a wild exchange of strikes and highspots. They both went down only to rise again for another slugfest. A second double down saw them stay down longer as the ref counted. They both broke the count as the fight soon spilled outside the ring. Gargano crashed and burned on an attempted senton cannonball. Ciampa executed a Devil’s
Wings on the ring steps. Gargano miraculously got to his feet to break the count.

In a callback to their last match, Ciampa removed the padding covering the ring to expose the wooden planks underneath. Gargano blasted Ciampa with a fire extinguisher. Gargano then grabbed a crutch and beat Ciampa with it. Sprinboarding into the ring, Gargano delivered a draping DDT on the wooden planks. In a clever way to get back on his feet, Ciampa broke the ten count by rolling outside the ring into a standing position on the floor. A similar situation would play into the finish later on.

Gargano twice did a tope suicida as he ran wild. Ciampa sidestepped — causing Gargano to superkick a member of the production crew. With the added effect of also using a chair, Ciampa delivered a running knee strike that sent Gargano crashing through the timekeeper’s area. Ciampa piled debris and the prone production crew member on top of Gargano trying to bury him so he could not answer the count. Gargano still broke the count nonetheless.

Ciampa got a pair of handcuffs. Gargano wrestled them away and cuffed Ciampa by one arm. Ciampa would wear the handcuffs on one arm the rest of the match until the finish. Gargano superkicked Ciampa off the apron — and Ciampa went through the stacked tables. Ciampa got to his feet with the help of a crutch to break the count. Ciampa backpedaled up the ramp. Gargano gave chase.

They fought on the stage in a callback to the angle where Ciampa turned on Gargano. This time, Gargano was the person administering the beatdown. Gargano handcuffed Ciampa to the stage. Ciampa pleaded and begged for forgiveness as Gargano rained down strikes. Gargano pulled down his kneepad before delivering a running knee strike. Upon impact, Gargano tumbled over production equipment and fell in a heap.

With both down selling, the ref started a double count. Gargano was unable to stand as he sold an injured knee. However, Ciampa rolled off the stage to land on his feet. Therefore, Ciampa broke the count and was declared the winner. Ranallo put over a narrative that Gargano had dislocated his knee. So, he cost himself the match in the end. Ciampa retains to fight another day.

WWE acknowledges Aleister Black injury with attack angle

WWE has seemingly acknowledged Aleister Black’s injury by running an angle after NXT went off the air tonight.

In the video posted on WWE’s YouTube page, Regal was talking about the triple threat match that had just been confirmed for TakeOver. At that moment, an assistant came up to Regal and said something had happened in the parking lot. As he passed by Johnny Gargano entering the building, then saw Undisputed Era driving away in a car, Regal found Black laying on the ground unconscious. Officials tended to Black as the video ended.

It was reported this weekend that Black suffered a groin injury during a match against Tomasso Ciampa at a NXT house show in Las Vegas. It wasn’t known if it would be an injury that he could heal from before the triple threat match at TakeOver. The angle would give him an out if he wouldn’t be able to get cleared before then.

Tonight’s NXT established a triple threat match for TakeOver pitting former champion Aleister Black against Johnny Gargano and new champion Tommaso Ciampa. The three have been feuding with one another over the last several weeks, with Gargano inadvertently costing Black the title after striking him with the NXT title, allowing Ciampa to pick up the victory and the title.

NXT TakeOver Orlando: One year later

Even though earlier this week, Triple H forgot that many of these year’s TakeOver talents competed on last year’s show, I didn’t. That’s why I wanted to check in on the progress of the TakeOver participants from last year’s WrestleMania weekend show to see how everyone evolved, perhaps as a harbinger of what could be for this year’s group a year from now.

SAnitY (Alexander Wolfe/Eric Young/Killian Dain/Nikki Cross) def. Kassius Ohno, Roderick Strong, Ruby Riot, and Tye Dillinger

SAnitY remains in NXT and since last year’s show, they won and held the tag titles for roughly four months last fall. Dain goes for the new North American title in a multi-person ladder match on this year’s show while the rest of the crew isn’t booked for the main show.

While Ohno is also still in Florida, Dillinger made his jump to the main roster on the post-Mania SmackDown and remains mired in the midcard. Riot was called up in November, got an extra ‘t’ added to her name, and is now part of the Riott Squad with fellow call-ups Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan.

Strong works primarily in NXT, but did make his main roster debut on 205 Live when he took part in the recent cruiserweight title tournament. Strong goes for the NXT tag titles with UK Champion Pete Dunne on this year’s TakeOver show.

Aleister Black def. Andrade “Cien” Almas

One year later, these two find themselves in the main event of TakeOver. Almas is the reigning NXT Champion and has found his act revitalized with the addition of manager Zelina Vega, even making his WWE debut in this year’s Royal Rumble. Black is essentially the same character as a year ago, but has only increased in popularity with a memorable feud with Velveteen Dream recently having concluded.

NXT Tag Team Champions Authors of Pain (Rezar/Akam) def. DIY (Johnny Gargano/Tommaso Ciampa) and The Revival in a three way elimination match

The AOP are no longer the tag team champions but are once again in a three-way dance for the tag titles again this year. The Revival got called up on the post-Mania Raw and defeated The New Day on their first night, but injuries to both men over the course of the year significantly derailed their progress. They also managed to become a punchline in the ‘Being The Elite’ YouTube series.

The biggest change here is with Gargano and Ciampa who went from the best of friends to the worst of enemies following Ciampa’s heel turn at TakeOver Chicago. Ciampa ruptured his ACL and missed a significant amount of time, but returned in a big way, attacking Gargano at NXT Philadelphia after Gargano failed in his NXT title bid against Almas. He then cost Gargano both the title and his career in a rematch, paving the way for this year’s “unsanctioned” match at TakeOver.

NXT Women’s Champion Asuka def. Ember Moon

Asuka completed her NXT run as the champion and got her call-up to Raw in the fall with a decent amount of fanfare. She still hasn’t lost in singles competition and takes her much-discussed winning streak into WrestleMania in a showdown with SmackDown women’s champion Charlotte Flair after having won the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble.

One year later, Moon is back in the title match, but now as the champion. At this year’s show, she looks to defend the title in a rematch with Shayna Baszler, a title she won in a November four-way. Like Almas, she made her WWE debut at the women’s Rumble this year.

NXT Champion Bobby Roode defeated Shinsuke Nakamura

Both men are now part of the SmackDown brand, but are in two different spots at WrestleMania. Roode (called up in August) will look to regain the U.S. title in a three-way with Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal while Nakamura (post-Mania SmackDown call-up) is gunning for the WWE title against AJ Styles in one of the weekend’s most anticipated matches.

Here is Saturday’s NXT TakeOver main card, a group we’ll be looking at a year from now to see how they did:

– NXT Champion Almas vs. Black
– NXT Women’s Champion Moon vs. Baszler
– NXT Tag Team Champions Adam Cole/Kyle O’Reilly vs. AOP vs. Strong/Dunne
– NXT North American Championship ladder match: Adam Cole vs. Ricochet vs. EC3 vs. Killian Dain vs. Lars Sullivan vs. Velveteen Dream
– Gargano vs. Ciampa unsanctioned
