Velveteen Dream vs. Matt Riddle official for NXT TakeOver: New York

Velveteen Dream and Matt Riddle’s North American Championship match is now official for NXT TakeOver: New York.

After last night’s episode of NXT television aired, WWE had William Regal send out a tweet confirming that Dream will defend his NXT North American title against Riddle at TakeOver: “Last night, @SuperKingofBros nearly had @VelveteenWWE beat in the Fatal 5-Way. While Riddle came up short, I want to see what happens when Riddle and Dream compete one-on-one, for the NXT North American Title… at #NXTTakeover: New York!”

Riddle had Dream in the Bromission near the end of the fatal five-way match, but Adam Cole pulled the referee out of the ring. The finish of the match was Cole pinning Ricochet after hitting the Last Shot. Cole will face Johnny Gargano in a two-out-of-three falls match for the vacant NXT Championship at TakeOver: New York.

WWE began building to Dream vs. Riddle at February’s NXT TV tapings. At this month’s tapings, Riddle declared that he would see Dream at TakeOver.

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn is hosting TakeOver: New York on April 5, which is the Friday of WrestleMania week. Here’s the card for the show:

  • Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole in a two-out-of-three falls match for the vacant NXT Championship
  • NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler defending against Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, and Kairi Sane in a fatal four-way match
  • WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne defending against WALTER
  • NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream defending against Matt Riddle
  • NXT Tag Team Champions War Raiders defending against the winners of the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic (the finals of the tournament were filmed at this month’s tapings)

Women’s title match set for NXT TakeOver: New York

Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, and Kairi Sane will all be challenging for the NXT Women’s Championship at next month’s TakeOver special.

Shayna Baszler defending her NXT Women’s title against Shirai, Belair, and Sane in a fatal four-way match has been announced for TakeOver: New York. The event is taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 5, which is the Friday of WrestleMania week.

The match was announced after an angle on this week’s episode of NXT TV. Baszler interrupted Shirai and Belair’s number one contender’s match and caused it to end in a no contest.

Baszler was on commentary for the match and then left the announce table to attack both Shirai and Belair. Sane tried to make the save, but the angle ended with Baszler having choked out all three with the Kirifuda Clutch.

Baszler is a two-time NXT Women’s Champion. Her current reign began when she defeated Sane for the title at Evolution in October 2018. At TakeOver: Phoenix this January, Baszler retained her title by defeating Belair.

NXT’s final television tapings before TakeOver: New York took place on Wednesday night.

UK title match added to NXT TakeOver: New York

Editor’s note: This article references spoilers from NXT UK episodes that have yet to air.

The WWE United Kingdom Championship will be on the line at NXT’s WrestleMania weekend TakeOver special.

At Saturday’s NXT UK television tapings in Coventry, England, Johnny Saint announced that Pete Dunne will defend his UK title at TakeOver: New York. Dunne told Saint and Sid Scala to give him WALTER.

A contract signing for Dunne vs. WALTER was held later in the tapings.

WALTER debuted at UK TakeOver: Blackpool last month, confronting Dunne after Dunne had defended his title against Joe Coffey. A matchup between Dunne and WALTER has been building since then. They teamed together at yesterday’s NXT UK tapings, with Dunne and WALTER having a staredown after the match and WALTER stepping on Dunne’s title belt.

This will be the first time the UK title has been defended on the main card of an NXT United States TakeOver event since Dunne defeated Tyler Bate to become champion at TakeOver: Chicago in May 2017.

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn is hosting TakeOver: New York on Friday, April 5.

WWE switches NXT TakeOver, HOF dates for WrestleMania 35 week

WWE has switched up a couple of dates on its schedule for WrestleMania week 2019.

The company issued a statement today confirming that NXT TakeOver: New York will now be held on Friday, April 5, 2019 and the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2019: “WWE will be going back to its previous WrestleMania Week schedule with NXT TakeOver on Friday, April 5 and the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, April 6. We believe this better serves our fans.”

The change first became known when WWE sent out emails about it today to those who have purchased WrestleMania travel packages. Individual tickets for TakeOver and the Hall of Fame ceremony have yet to go on sale.

Both TakeOver: New York and the Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The post-WrestleMania episodes of Raw and SmackDown will also take place at the Barclays Center in the days after MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey hosts WrestleMania 35 on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

The change means that the Hall of Fame ceremony (instead of TakeOver) will be going head-to-head with ROH and NJPW’s G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
