Meiko Satomura retires from the ring, WWE stars send video messages

Meiko Satomura’s 30-year journey in the ring came to an end at Korakuen Hall on Tuesday.

In her official retirement match, Satomura & Manami defeated Aja Kong & Sendai Girls Champion Chihiro Hashimoto. A Scorpio Rising kick from Satomura to Kong was the finish. There was then an impromptu five-minute handicap match where — at Kong’s request — the two legends Satomura & Kong teamed together against Hashimoto, Mika Iwata, Takumi Iroha, Senka Akatsuki & YUNA.

The show was named “Meiko Satomura The Final” and was produced by Satomura’s Sendai Girls promotion. WWE stars Kairi Sane, IYO SKY, Asuka, and Shinsuke Nakamura sent in video messages that were played for Satomura. There were also messages from NJPW’s Hiroshi Tanahashi and joshi legend Devil Masami. Among those in attendance at the show were The Crush Gals, Bull Nakano, Akira Hokuto, and Kenta Kobashi.

Fans showered Satomura with streamers after the bell rang 10 times and her name was called out by the announcer one final time. She gave a speech promising to continue devoting her life to pro wrestling through Sendai Girls.

The 45-year-old Satomura echoed that sentiment in a tweet, vowing to help make the next era of wrestling even more amazing. She thanked everyone who came to today’s show and said she was happy to be surrounded by so many people who played a part in her career.

Satomura’s journey took her from Japan to rings across the world, including wrestling for WCW in the 1990s, becoming an attraction on the European indies, and a stint with WWE as a wrestler, coach, and champion in NXT UK.

New matches added to WWE SmackDown

Some new match announcements have been made for tonight’s WWE SmackDown episode.

Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia is hosting the Elimination Chamber fallout edition of SmackDown tonight. Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will appear live, addressing John Cena’s heel turn for the first time. A Philly street fight is also set for the show with Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defending against Michin.

WWE shared a video this afternoon with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announcing that tonight’s main event will be Shinsuke Nakamura vs. LA Knight for the men’s United States title. Aldis also added two other matches to the card: Braun Strowman vs. Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso vs. Drew McIntyre.

The Nakamura-Knight title match was originally supposed to happen on SmackDown last week, but plans for the show had to be changed up and there was instead a mini-tournament that Knight won to become the definitive number one contender to Nakamura’s title.

WWE SmackDown (Friday, March 7) —

  • United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defends against LA Knight
  • Street fight: Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defends against Michin
  • Braun Strowman vs. Solo Sikoa

LA Knight earns future United States title match on WWE SmackDown

LA Knight has firmly established himself as the number one contender to the United States title.

Knight earned the opportunity to face Shinsuke Nakamura in a rematch for the United States title after winning a three-way match involving Carmelo Hayes and Jacob Fatu on SmackDown. The finish had Fatu hitting a swanton bomb on Hayes but as he was going for the cover Knight dragged Fatu out of the ring then covered Hayes to win the match.

Originally, Knight was advertised to face Nakamura on Friday in a title match. Just hours before the show went on the air, however, GM Nick Aldis announced on social media that while LA Knight believed he was the number one contender, champion Nakamura did not A three-match mini-tournament took place instead where the three winners later faced off in a triple threat match. Knight defeated Santos Escobar, Fatu (who replaced Solo Sikoa) defeated Andrade, and Carmelo Hayes defeated Braun Strowman by DQ to advance to the number one contendership match.

Nakamura defeated Knight to win the title back at Survivor Series. He is now in his third reign as United States Champion.

LA Knight vs. Shinsuke Nakamura United States title match set for WWE SmackDown

LA Knight has a chance to regain the WWE United States Championship.

WWE.com has announced that Knight will challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the title on next week’s SmackDown.

“The United States Championship will be on the line when LA Knight challenges Shinsuke Nakamura. Nakamura defeated Knight to win the title at Survivor Series on Nov. 30 and has held it tightly since. The Megastar has been relentless in his quest to regain the title, recently defeating The Miz to become the No. 1 Contender and setting the stage for this incredible rematch. Will Knight regain the United States Championship, or will Nakamura continue his reign? Find out on Friday Night SmackDown at 8 ET/7 CT on USA,” reads a WWE.com preview for the match.

Nakamura won the championship by defeating Knight at Survivor Series in Vancouver on November 30. He then traveled to Japan, where he defeated Ulka Sasaki at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s New Year’s Day show at the Nippon Budokan. Nakamura and Knight faced off again on the January 10 episode of SmackDown, where Nakamura lost via disqualification.

On this week’s SmackDown, Nakamura attacked Knight during a tag team match where Knight and R-Truth faced The Miz and Carmelo Hayes.

Next week’s SmackDown will take place at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, one night before WWE Elimination Chamber at Rogers Centre. No other matches have been officially confirmed, but SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis informed United States Champion Chelsea Green that she will have an opponent on the show, though he did not reveal who it will be.

WWE SmackDown, Friday, February 28, 2025, advertised lineup:

  • WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defends against LA Knight
  • WWE Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green vs. TBA

WWE SmackDown live results: Two title matches, Tiffany Stratton appears

WWE is at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, tonight for the second SmackDown of 2025.

Both the men’s and women’s United States Championships will be on the line on the three-hour show. After dropping the men’s U.S. title to Shinsuke Nakamura at last November’s Survivor Series, LA Knight gets his rematch.

In another rematch, Chelsea Green defends the women’s U.S. title against Michin. Green defeated Michin in a tournament final at last month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event to become the inaugural champion. This is her first title defense.

Also set for tonight, new WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton will appear. Stratton will address her betrayal of Nia Jax from last week when she finally cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase to become champion. The cash-in happened after Stratton helped Jax defeat Naomi in last week’s main event.

Join us for live coverage starting at 8 PM Eastern time.

– Joe Tessitore welcomed everyone into the show as outdoor scenes of Portland, Oregon aired. Wade Barrett was Tessitore’s broadcast partner and the two stood at ringside. Footage of Nakamura and Tiffany Stratton from earlier today aired. Paul Heyman was shown making his way to the ring for the opening segment. A video recap of Raw then aired.

The Paul Heyman/Cody Rhodes segment

This was good. And for the second week in a row, I don’t know why they don’t advertise these types of things beforehand. A Paul Heyman/Cody Rhodes segment would have been noteworthy and maybe even drew some more eyeballs to the show; is there a reason we can’t know this is going to happen ahead of time? Anyway, Roman entering the Royal Rumble is mildly intriguing because that notion isn’t one that’s been talked about much when it comes to all the fantasy booking scenarios involving Cody, Roman, about a dozen other people and WrestleMania. Heyman put Cody over pretty well here – to the extent that it looked like Cody was genuinely choking up for a second. The Owens touch was nice because everybody has been whining about The Rock and Cody’s interaction on Monday and someone needed to say it out loud. Also, and finally, did that final sequence mean Cody vs. Fatu is on the horizon? Lots of stuff here to open the show. I like it.

Paul Heyman walked into the ring and did the “My name …” bit. Heyman said he was excited to be there and announced that there is only one reigning, defending undisputed Tribal Chief of the WWE Universe and the entire Island of Relevancy and that Tribal Chief is Roman Reigns. The crowd cheered and “OTC!” chants broke out. Heyman said Reigns authorized Heyman to tell everyone what Roman intends to accomplish next. Heyman said he wanted to share the news with one man in particular – and that man is Cody Rhodes. Cody’s music hit and Cody’s entrance began.

Cody and Heyman shook hands once Cody entered the ring. Heyman said Cody deserved the response he received from the crowd and Cody has done something few have ever done, which is earn the respect of Roman Reigns. Heyman talk about how great of a champion Cody has been. Because Cody has been a great champion, Reigns told Heyman to go out there and tell Cody that Roman wants his title back. Heyman said Reigns wanted Cody to know how he intends to get his title back. Heyman declared that Roman Reigns will be in the Royal Rumble this year to earn his way into a match against Cody for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Heyman then asked Cody what he wanted to talk about, which was funny.

The crowd chanted Cody’s name as Cody fetched a microphone for himself. Before Cody could speak, Kevin Owens’s voice was heard and it turned out that Owens was in the crowd with a microphone. Owens said just when he thought it couldn’t get worse, it did get worse because Cody went and shook hands with The Rock on Monday. Owens brought up how Heyman just mentioned how Roman Reigns wants his title back. Owens said he should have let the Bloodline rip Roman to shreds. Owens kept rambling and Cody ran out of the ring and brawled with Owens in the crowd.

With Heyman alone in the ring, Tama Tonga and Jacob Fatu showed up. It looked like they were going to attack Heyman, but Jimmy Uso’s music hit and Jimmy ran out for the save. Jimmy grabbed a chair and hit Fatu and Tonga with it, but all it did was wake Fatu up. Fatu hit Jimmy with a flying elbow and the two worked Jimmy over. Fatu kicked a referee in the face, which made the rest of the referees scared to enter the ring. Cody made his way back through the crowd and towards the ring. Cody threw Tonga out of the ring and Fatu and Cody faced off. Cody clotheslined Fatu over the top and to the outside. Cody’s music hit to end the segment.

**********

– Fatu and Tonga were shown being thrown out of the building by officials. Fatu fought back and started yelling at them. LA Knight showed up and threw Fatu out of the building himself, saying he has a title to win later. So … um … oh no, LA Knight?

Chelsea Green defeated Michin to retain the Women’s United States Championship [8:42]

I was surprised they went back to this match so quickly, but I’m also happy that it doesn’t appear as though Green and Michin’s story is over, considering the holding of the tights and the post-match developments. In some ways, I feel like these two could work together through the Royal Rumble and it would still be entertaining each week. Green is impossible not to like and she has great, worn-in ring chemistry with Michin, so their matches rarely disappoint. As such, this match didn’t disappoint. Are we in for Dumpster Match Part Two? Or is there another stip out there with which these two could have fun?

Green went for a kick and Michin moved. Michin then held control of the match early, complete with a dropkick and a pin attempt. Michin stretched Green over the top rope, but it wasn’t long before Green fought back and threw Michin to the outside. Green threw Michin into the crowd barrier, but Michin made it back into the ring to beat a count out. Green kept her offense up as the show went to a commercial break.

Back from break, Green had the upper hand and worked a chin-lock. Michin got out of it via a back suplex. Michin landed a shotgun dropkick and danced before hitting a Cannonball on Green in a corner for a two-count. Michin went to threw Green, but Green countered by planting Michin face-first. Green went to the top, but missed a dropkick and Michin took control with a running knee. Michin went on the apron and kicked Piper Niven in the face. Michin then went to the top and hit a cross-body, but Green rolled through and held Michin’s tights to get the win.

After the match, Michin tried to attack Green, but Niven interfered and hit a Senton on Michin, allowing Green to get away.

– Footage from last week’s tag title match aired. Motor City Machine Guns were shown complaining to Nick Aldis earlier today. Pretty Deadly, A-Town Down Under and Los Garza were in the shot, too. Aldis told everyone to shut up. Pretty Deadly and Los Garza will face each other while MCMG and A-Town Down Under will square off with the winners potentially wrestling each other for a shot at the tag titles.

Los Garza (Angel & Humberto) defeated Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince & Kit Wilson) [8:56]

So this is why SmackDown went to three hours, eh? Give some folks some TV time and grant the viewing audience that Los Garza vs Pretty Deadly bout they’ve been craving for months now? Cool. This match was just kind of there despite everyone’s efforts to heat up this mini feud last week. My biggest problem? Since when did Los Garza or anyone in Legado Del Fantasma start working as babyfaces? The crowd cheered them here (or at least crowd sounds, wherever they did or did not come from, cheered them here), but I can’t really figure out why they’d do that other than they played the role of Not Pretty Deadly. But even then – even then! – wouldn’t Pretty Deadly be better babyfaces in this scenario because of their silly, comedic musical skits that have popped up through the weeks? My head is spinning. Either way, the match was harmless.

Los Garza jumpstarted the match and Humberto hit a suicide dive on Wilson on the outside. Back inside the ring, Humberto hit a standing moonsault for a two-count. Angel tagged in and the two hit Wilson with a double super-kick for a two-count. Humberto tagged in and landed a dropkick for a two-count. Prince got a blind tag and dragged Humberto over the top and to the outside via a gnarly neck-breaker. The show went to a commercial break.

Back from break, Humberto was doing his best to turn things around against Prince, but couldn’t do so. Wilson then tagged in and missed a splash immediately, which allowed Humerto to get the hot tag to Angel, who fired up and landed a cross-body from the top rope for a two-count. Angel did the take-his-pants-off spot, which hasn’t been shown on WWE TV in ages. He threw the pants at Wilson and kicked him for a two-count. Prince reasserted himself and planted Angel while the referee was distracted. With the ref still distracted, Santos Escobar crotched Prince. From there, Los Garza hit their finisher on Prince for the win.

LA Knight defeated Shinsuske Nakamura via DQ [14:06]

This was much better than their Survivor Series match and it would have been even better if we got a clean finish out of it, but after Knight went and gave an f-word when it wasn’t his turn to give an f-word (to, in a censored way, quote “The Wire”) with Fatu earlier in the show, you could see this finish coming from a million miles away. I hope Nakamura and Knight get to run it back at some point (I still think Knight gets that belt back sooner than later) because this proved that they could go deep and it could work. I’m as entertained by Knight as anybody, but he isn’t typically considered as one of the best in-ring fellas in the game. Here, though, he went into deep waters and it worked. Good job from both guys.

The match started slow with neither wrestler getting the upper hand for long. Nakamura eventually got control and hit a running knee on Knight, who was draped over the ring apron. Knight tried to fight back, but Nakamura cut him off and went to work on Knight’s knee. Knight found himself on the outside of the ring and ultimately clotheslined Nakamura and sent him to the floor. Knight followed that up with a baseball slide and proceeded to repeatedly pound Nakamura’s head on the commentary table. Back inside the ring, Knight clotheslined Nakamura over the top to the outside again. Nakamura ran Knight into the ring post twice and the show went to a picture-in-picture break.

The show returned and the two traded blows until Knight took over and slammed Nakamura before hitting an elbow for a two-count. Knight lifted Nakamura, but Nakamura worked his way out of it. Nakamura pulled the turnbuckle pad off the second rope and followed it up with a sliding German Suplex. With Nakamura on the top, Knight ran up the ropes and super-plexed Nakamura for a good near-fall. Knight sunk in a weird version of a reverse Boston Crab (surely, Excalibur knows the name of the move), but Nakamura made it to the ropes for a break.

Nakamura went for an arm-bar, but Knight rolled Nakamura up for a two-count. Nakamura popped up and kicked Knight. Knight went for a BFT, but Nakamura countered with a back elbow. Nakamura followed that up with the Kinshasha, but Knight got his leg on the bottom rope to break up the pin attempt. Nakamura put Knight’s head on the exposed turnbuckle, but Knight moved and Nakamura ran into the exposed turnbuckle. Knight then hit the BFT but Tonga and Fatu showed up and attacked Knight to end the match.

Fatu hit all his greatest hits on Knight until Cody and Jimmy ran back out. This time, Cody was dressed in wrestling attire. They double super-kicked Fatu and Fatu and Tonga retreated through the crowd. Cody grabbed a mic and yelled for Nick Aldis to make a match between Cody and Jimmy and Fatu and Tonga. Aldis made the match.

Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) defeated A-Town Down Under (Austin Theory & Grayson Waller) [12:06]

A solid match, and a much better tag match than the other tag bout on this show earlier. MCMG seem to be kind of/sort of finally clicking in WWE Land, and I hope whatever that is continues to grow. Meanwhile, Theory and Waller looked pretty good holding their own against the veteran former tag champs. In fact, Waller and Theory were given a lot of offense here and they made the most of it, which doesn’t always happen in these scenarios. Does this mean we get Los Garza vs. MCMG soon? Or does MCMG skip the line and head right back to #DIY?

Shelley and Waller began the match. Waller had the upper hand and Theory tagged in. Theory threw Shelley chest-first into a corner and followed it up with a clothesline. Sabin tagged in and gave MCMG control briefly until Waller tagged in and hit a series of knees to Sabin’s head. Waller then landed a spinning right hand for a two-count. Waller then went to work on Sabin’s arm. Sabin ran the ropes and Shelley bling-tagged himself in. MCMG kicked and clotheslined Waller over the top rope. Sabin went for a splash, but Theory tripped Sabin. From there, Waller hit a rolling Flatliner on Shelley inside the ring for a two-count. The show then went to a commercial break.

Back from the break, Waller and Theory stayed on top of Shelley. Theory worked a chin-lock on Shelley. Waller tagged in, but Shelley ran Theory into Waller and super-kicked Theory. Shelley rolled and tagged Sabin, who landed a series of punches on Waller. Sabin went to the second rope and hit a missile dropkick on Waller. Shelley tagged in and the two landed stereo baseball slides on Theory and Waller. MCMG followed that up with Sabin’s suicide dive through the top and second ropes.

Inside the ring, Shelley tagged in Sabin and while Waller ran the ropes, Theory tagged himself in. The action spilled outside and Sabin ran at Waller, but Theory cut Sabin off with an elbow. Waller tagged in and the heels hit a double punch to Sabin’s head for a two-count. Shelley eventually tagged in as things broke down and all four wrestlers were down. Sabin tagged in and took Waller out. Shelley and Sabin singled Theory out and hit Skull & Bones on Theory for the win.

– Ciampa and Gargano were shown upset backstage. They ran into Pretty Deadly, who asked #DIY why they didn’t help them out earlier. Gargano said Pretty Deadly will get their title match eventually and Pretty Deadly need to trust them. Apollo Crews walked into the scene and if they were dumb enough to believe #DIY, they’ll deserve everything coming their way.

– Nia Jax and Candice LeRae were talking in the locker room. Jax wondered what Tiffany Stratton would say later. Jax then walked to the ring and said she was going to congratulate Stratton herself.

The Tiffy Time segment

Wow. And speaking of not advertising things that should have been advertised … . My goodness. A Fatal Four-Way for a shot at Stratton seems like a thing they could have announced ahead of time, but again, what do I know? Nothing. That’s the answer. Nothing. Anyway, everyone here showed good fire, most of whom was Jax, who really seemed really pissed and sold it really well. Bayley and Naomi, meanwhile, had good logic. And Tiffy is settling in nice into her spot as a sort of pesky tweener champion (make her an official babyface already!). This upcoming four-way should be fun.

Stratton came out to a big positive reception from the crowd. Byron Saxton was in the ring and reminded Stratton that she became the new WWE Women’s Champion last week. Saxton congratulated Stratton and Stratton yelled “It’s Tiffy Time!” She also called it a “tiffy-turn-of-events.” Stratton then recapped her run so far on the main roster and said she is better than “your favorites.” The crowd cheered her. Saxton started talking about Jax bullying Stratton, but Stratton cut off Saxton. Stratton said she got JAx to trust her and Jax thought Stratton was just a dumb blonde and Jax let her guard down. As a result, Stratton said, she stole Jax’s most prized possession. Stratton yelled to put respect on her name and to tell her what time it is.

On cue, Jax’s music hit and Jax walked out with a microphone. Jax looked angry. Jax called Stratton and “ungrateful little s-@#.” Jax said she could kill Stratton. Jax said Stratton would be nothing without Jax because Jax made Stratton. Jax said it took Stratton long enough to take advantage of her. Jax walked onto the ring apron and then into the ring. The crowd chanted “Tiffy Time” and Jax said “Time’s up,” before telling Stratton to give Jax her title back or Jax said she’d take it back. Out of nowhere, Bayley’s music hit and Bayley walked out with a microphone.

Bayley told Jax to shut the hell up and told Stratton she always thought Stratton was stupid. Bayley recalled how Jax took Stratton under her wing and Stratton still outsmarted Jax. Bayley stepped into the ring and said the only reason Jax had her title was because Jax had Stratton’s help. Bayley said it was only fitting that Bayley takes Stratton’s title from her. Naomi’s music then hit and Naomi walked out with a microphone and Bianca Belair.

Naomi said everyone knew Naomi had Jax beat last week. Naomi said if it wasn’t for Stratton, Naomi would be holding two titles. Naomi said Jax has to see her first before going after Stratton. Jax said nobody cares about Naomi. Jax attacked Belair and Naomi. As Naomi, Bayley, Belair and Jax were fighting, Stratton hit the Prettiest Moonsault on everyone and left them lying as she walked away with her title.

Aldis showed up with a microphone and said he had an idea. Aldis announced that there will be a Fatal Four-Way right now to determine who will be the No. 1 contender for Stratton’s title.

**********

Bayley defeated Nia Jax, Naomi & Bianca Belair to become the No. 1 Contender for the WWE Women’s Championship [17:16]

An unexpected outcome, but a welcome outcome nonetheless. Bayley and Stratton should have a quietly very good-to-great match and I’m looking forward to that. I was convinced Jax would win to get her rematch, but that next beat in the Jax/Stratton program will clearly come at a later date. I’m a fan of this being the longest match on the show and even more a fan of how much space these women were seemingly given when it comes to putting this match together. It was almost like an AEW match – move after move after move after move with bouts of little-to-no-selling until the match reset itself a couple times. Lots of fun stuff in here and maybe – just maybe – this will win Match Of The Night honors after it’s all said and done.

Naomi and Belair teamed up on Jax early until Jax tried to suplex both at the same time and barely got them over. Bayley returned to the action and pounded on Jax until Jax threw Bayley away. The babyfaces went after Jax, but Jax pushed them all away. Naomi, Bayley and Belair stared each other down and Jax pulled Belair to the outside. Bayley and Naomi then locked up inside the ring and Naomi got the best of it early until Bayley came back and the two traded pin attempts. Bayley was pulled to the outside by Jax and Jax threw Bayley into the crowd barrier.

Inside the ring, Naomi landed a chin-breaker on Jax. Naomi leapt at Jax, but Jax caught her and slammed her for a two-count. Belair tried to lift Jax, but Jax stopped her. In all, it turned into a dropkick from Belair into Jax. Belair pounded on Jax in a corner. Jax powerbombed Belair, but Bayley broke up a pin attempt. Bayley suplexed Jax and went to the top, but Jax cut Bayley off. Jax lifted Bayley for a Samoan Drop, but Naomi and Belair ran in and slammed Jax, who slammed Bayley, and all four wrestlers were down. The show then went to a commercial break.

Back from break, Jax slammed Naomi, but Belair and Bayley broke up a pin attempt. Bayley and Belair took turns punching Jax. Bayley and Belair sent Jax to the outside and then went after each other. Bayley rolled up Belair for a two-count. Bayley rolled Belair up again, but Jax broke that up. Naomi returned to the action and kicked Jax before landing a Russian Leg Sweep. Naomi hit a Split-Legged Moonsault on Jax for a near-fall.

Bayley came form the top rope and hit an elbow drop on Jax for a two-count. Belair then came off the top and hit a 450 splash on Jax, but Bayley broke that pin attempt up. The babyfaces tried to pin Jax at the same time and it didn’t work. LeRae then walked down to the ring and Naomi and Belair worked some double-team moves on Bayley. That left Naomi and Belair alone to fight each other. Instead of going at it, they went at Bayley and Jax on the outside. Jax caught Naomi and ran her into the ring apron.

Jax returned to the ring and was the recipient of a shoulder-block from Belair. Bayley then hit Bayley-To-Belly on Belair, btu Naomi broke it up. Naomi hit a Rear Vew on Bayley, but Jax broke that up. Jax dropped Naomi and Belair broke up that pin attempt. The match reset again with all four wrestlers down in the middle of the ring. Belair planted Bayley and hit a moonsault on her for a two-count. Belair lifted Bayley for a KOD, but LeRae broke it up by pulling on Belair’s braid. Belair then accidentally hit Naomi with the braid.

Jax and Belair took each other over the commentary table. Inside the ring, Bayley hit the Rose Plant on Naomi and that was good enough for the win.

– Cody and Jimmy were shown talking backstage and Cody said he knew Roman would want his title back so all was good. Cody walked away and Carmelo Hayes walked up to Jimmy and half-threatened Jimmy. Jimmy talked about how Melo shoots nothing but bricks and then half-yeeted.

– Bayley was walking backstage and ran into Byron Saxton, who said Bayley’s match against Stratton will take place next week. Bayley said she’s grown up in this business and she pointed out that Stratton has never beaten Bayley. Also set for next week, MCMG will take on Los Garza. Solo Sikoa is set to return to SmackDown next week as well.

– Jacob Fatu was yelling while walking backstage and towards the ring with Tonga. Fatu’s tone has shifted from crazed Solo Sikoa follower to a more serious approach and it’s great.

Tama Tonga & Jacob Fatu defeated Cody Rhodes & Jimmy Uso [13:18]

I love it. I love Fatu getting the win, even if that means it was because Cody was taken out of the match. Keep that version of The Bloodline strong, even after Solo’s loss and let’s get some heat for the eventual Solo vs. Jacob showdown. If Jimmy and Cody would have won, this would have felt like a regular dark match that was designed to send the live crowd home happy; instead, we further the strength of Fatu – and even Tonga, to a degree. Really good booking here, at least in terms of WWE (yes, I know you hate WWE, but be reasonable). On the other hand, that weird final spot with the makeshift spear that Cody just kind of leaned into felt a little odd. But we got to where we needed to go. A very good way to end an unusually better-than-solid SmackDown these days. Let’s see how next week goes.

Cody and Tonga started the match and Cody dropped Tonga. Cody went to Tonga’s arm and tagged in Jimmy, who went to the top and came down on Tonga’s left arm. Tonga fired up and beat Jimmy into a corner. Fatu tagged in and Fatu went to work on Jimmy. Fatu landed his pop-up Samoan Drop on Jimmy and the show went to a PIP commercial break.

The show returned and Tonga tagged in to dropkick Cody and work Jimmy’s leg and yell odd things. Fatu tagged in and landed a Senton on Jimmy after hitting Cody off the apron. Fatu landed a hip attack on Jimmy. He did that two times over. After the second time, Fatu got a two-count out of it. Fatu placed Jimmy on the top rope and screamed “I love you Solo!” Jimmy then fought back and knocked Fatu off the ropes. Jimmy eventually hit a spinning splash on Fatu and Cody received the hot tag.

Cody snap-powerslammed Tonga, who also tagged in. Tonga received a Disaster Kick. Cody lifted Tonga, but Tonga got out of it. Fatu and Tonga were on the outside and Cody landed a suicide dive on both heels. Back in the ring, Cody did the Dusty punches/elbow on Tonga for a two-count. Cody set up for a CrossRhodes on Tonga, but Tonga countered into a DDT for a two-count. Cody lifted Tonga and perched on on the top while Jimmy tagged in. Cody and Jimmy did a variation of the Power And Glory finisher, but Fatu broke things up. As a response, Cody hit a Cody Cutter on Fatu and Jimmy sent Fatu over the commentary desk.

Kevin Owens walked down the aisle. Cody saw him and Cody and KO brawled to the back. Inside the ring, Jimmy hit a spear on Tonga and went to the top and hit the Uso Splash, but Fatu pulled Jimmy to the outside. Fatu then tagged in and slammed Jimmy’s head on the commentary table before rolling himi back into the ring. Fatu hit an Impaler and his moonsault and that got him the win.

Meanwhile, Owens and Cody brawled back into the arena and onto traveling equipment. Owens set up for a powerbomb, but instead the two traded punches. From there, Cody speared Owens and the two went through two tables in the crowd. Both guys sold pain and that’s how the show went off the air.

United States title rematch set for next WWE SmackDown

The United States Championship will be on the line on the Friday, January 10 WWE SmackDown.

As revealed during this week’s show, Shinsuke Nakamura will defend the United States Championship against former title holder LA Knight on next week’s WWE SmackDown.

Nakamura defeated Knight for the title at Survivor Series in November after using black mist to blind the former champ.

Knight attacked Nakamura on Friday’s SmackDown after the champ defeated Andrade in one-on-one competition. Knight then revealed in a backstage segment later in the program that Nick Aldis had booked the title bout for next week.

A future Women’s United States title bout was also set up on SmackDown, though not officially announced. Michin defeated Women’s US Champion Chelsea Green’s ally Piper Niven on this week’s SmackDown, perhaps indicating a future meeting between Green and Michin.

The announced lineup for the Friday, January 10 WWE SmackDown:

  • WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defends against LA Knight

WWE SmackDown live results: Women’s title match, Bloodline six-man tag

On the first WWE SmackDown of 2025 and with a return to three hours, WWE Women’s Champion Nia Jax will defend her title against Naomi on a sparsely announced card as of this writing.

Jax defeated Naomi in November to retain her title, but the champion was part of a losing effort last week as she teamed with Tiffany Stratton & Candice LeRae and came up short against Naomi, Bayley & Bianca Belair.

In a trios match that will main event the show, the OG Bloodline (Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso & Sami Zayn) will face The Bloodline (Jacob Fatu, Solo Sikoa & Tama Tonga) in Jimmy’s first match since breaking his toe at Survivor Series.

WWE United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura will go one-on-one with Andrade in a non-title match. Nakamura defeated Andrade in November after Andrade ran into an exposed turnbuckle. To receive a future title shot, Andrade must win tonight.

– Michael Cole welcomed everyone into the show as footage of Phoenix aired. Cole then threw to last week’s developments regarding Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens. Afterwards, Cody made his entrance inside the arena. He was dressed in a suit.

The Cody Rhodes promo

This was pretty good. Cody continues to show good fire in his program with Owens and I get a kick out of both Owens and McIntyre never really being wrong in their logic for why they have issues with the babyfaces. That said, it felt like McIntyre’s words here were dripping in foreshadowing and I think that extends beyond the attack Owens showed up to execute, so it should be compelling to see how things play out between Drew and Cody over the coming weeks. Speaking of weeks, with four of them left until the Royal Rumble, I wonder how they’re going to stretch out Owens and Cody beyond simple pull-aparts each week. In some ways, it’s already a bit stale, considering how much those two worked with each other in 2024. It’d be nice if they found a way to freshen things up going into their ladder match.

Cody took in a bunch of cheers and then shouted “Phoenix” before saying they all want to talk about the same thing. He said WWE is on the cusp of changing everything and it starts tonight by SmackDown going three hours. Cody referenced Raw going to Netflix and said his excitement was tempered because he cannot be involved because he is not cleared to wrestle because of Kevin Owens. Cody noted that management was concerned about him even being there at all, but at the Royal Rumble, he will compete with Owens in a ladder match. Drew McIntyre’s music then hit and McIntyre walked out through the main entrance.

McIntyre took his time stepping into the ring, but he got there. McIntyre stepped towards Cody and … hugged Cody. Cody looked confused. McIntyre said he wasn’t there to hurt Cody; he was there to help Cody. McIntyre said Cody is about to screw up his entire life’s work and Drew is looking out for him. McIntyre said right now is the best generation of wrestlers WWE has ever had and Cody is the quarterback of it all. McIntyre noted how he knows what it’s like to want to compete, but management won’t let that happen. McIntyre said he can see that Cody needs a friend and Cody interrupted McIntyre.

Cody asked Drew if he wanted to help him and Drew said yes – because he always tells the truth. Cody said he and McIntyre are kindred spirits in the way they left WWE and came back for success. Cody listed off other ways they are the same, but essentially said it didn’t matter because Cody said he didn’t believe McIntyre. Cody then invited McIntyre to “come and get it.” McIntyre said he was telling Cody the truth again – he wasn’t there to hurt Cody; he was there to help Cody. Drew stepped out on the apron and told Cody he needed to watch his back. McIntyre stepped off the apron and Owens attacked Cody from behind. McIntyre slowly walked to the back.

Owens and Cody brawled in the ring and Cody briefly had control. Officials ran out to separate the two and Cody broke away to leap at Owens. Owens found himself on the outside of the ring and the two jawed at each other from afar. Owens was pushed back up the entranceway by the officials. Cody sold head pain in the ring as he scowled at Owens. Cody’s music hit to end things.

– The Bloodline was shown arriving to the building earlier in the day. Naomi and Bianca Belair got the same treatment. Ditto for Nia Jax and Andrade.

Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Andrade [8:48]

It was nice to see the crowd rally behind this match by the time these two went to the finish. As for the body of the bout, it was fine enough. I’m not too much of a fan of Andrade continuously taking losses, but I’ve been whining about that for long enough in this space now that I should probably stop. I like the freshened up Nakamura a little more each time I see him. His entrance is plodding, but effective and even the face paint kind of/sort of works. This was nothing near the level of some of their matches years ago, but a solid TV match is a solid TV match and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Nakamura went at Andrade to begin the match, but Andrade rebounded quickly and hit a moonsault onto Nakamura, who was on the outside, about 40 seconds into the match, the show went to a commercial break. The show returned and Andrade was working a comeback, including a leaping elbow. Andrade fired up the crowd, but ran into a knee from Nakamura. With Andrade draped over the second rope, Nakamura landed a German Suplex before heading to the top and hitting a knee to Andrade’s head. Nakamura then ripped off the top turnbuckle covering.

Andrade dropkicked Nakamura into the exposed buckle and followed it up with a Meteora, which earned Andrade a two-count. Andrade went to the top and landed his double miss-then-make moonsault for a good near-fall. Andrade set up for The Message, but Nakamura countered … only for Andrade to land a spinning back elbow for a very good near-fall that actually looked like it should have been a three count. Andrade placed Nakamura on the top rope, but Nakamura blocked a super-plex attempt and slammed Andrade’s head on top of the ring post. Nakamura hit the Kinshasha from there and got the win.

Almost instantly after Nakamura was announced as the winner, LA Knight’s music hit and Knight pounded on Nakamura. Knight went for a BFT, but Nakamura escaped and walked away. Knight grabbed a microphone and said one way or another, he will collect what’s owed to him, which is the U.S. title. Knight then did his catchphrase to end the post-match shenanigans.

– Apollo Crews were walking backstage and ran into Pretty Deadly. Santos Escobar showed up with Legado Del Fantasma and accused Pretty Deadly of lying to his faction. Los Garza then half-attacked Pretty Deadly before Nick Aldis showed up and broke things up. Aldis then told Pretty Deadly they needed to have a chat.

– Aldis was shown talking to Pretty Deadly after a commercial break and asked about who attacked the Street Profits. #DIY showed up and Aldis said all four wrestlers were on thin ice. #DIY told Pretty Deadly that it’s important they leave Phoenix as tag champs later tonight. Gargano then said “Yes, boy,” and the Pretty Deadly duo were excited.

Michin defeated Piper Niven [6:57]

A seven minute match that lost nearly three minutes to commercials. Add all the hours you want, WWE; some things will never change. This was fine for what it was and I don’t really have an issue with them running things back between Green and Michin. I don’t know how you top a Dumpster Match, if you go a stipulation route between the two, but maybe the booking minds have something good in mind.

Michin ran at Niven to start the match, but Niven caught her and ran Michin into a corner. Michin came back and took Niven down on the outside of the ring. Things were going well for Michin until Niven caught her and hit a sidewalk slam before the show went to a commercial break. The show returned and Michin had control after landing a Bulldog. Michin went for Eat Defeat, but Niven countered and went for a Cannonball, but Michin moved and hit one of her own. Michin saluted Chelsea Green mockingly and hit a Pele Kick on Niven for a two-count.

Michin went to the top, but Niven moved and landed a Piper Driver on Michin for a two-count. Niven set up for a Vader Bomb, but Michin got her feet up. Michin followed that up Eat Defeat and got the win.

– Paul Heyman was shown entering the arena as the show went to break.

– A Naomi vignette aired when the program returned.

The Paul Heyman/Bloodline segment

This was a good go-home segment for the Tribal Combat match on Monday, especially if Roman was never going to show up. I also like touch that had Sikoa never get physical with Heyman. Does that mean Heyman might be in cahoots with Sikoa and his version of the Bloodline now? Probably not, but I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t feel like a swerve is coming one way or another on Monday. Also: Man, this show missed Paul Heyman. He makes good things great and great things can’t-miss. I don’t know why they didn’t advertise his appearance beforehand. Makes you wonder if a Reigns appearance might have been in play up until the final minutes. Then again, there is more Bloodline later on in the show.

Heyman walked into the ring and did his “Ladies and gentlemen …” thing. Heyman said he wanted to set something straight – on Monday, they will find out who is the real Tribal Chief. Heyman said Roman Reigns and Heyman trained Solo Sikoa to become the next Tribal Chief – but not right now. Heyman then recalled everything that happened at WrestleMania 40 and said Sikoa sized the moment and stole the Ula Fala from Reigns’s bag. Heyman called Sikoa a “twisted son of a b#@!.”

Heyman said Sikoa went out and found a band of filthy animals who don’t belong in pro wrestling. He said Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa, who aren’t welcome in the United States and cited Jacob Fatu as someone who isn’t even welcome in the United States prison system. Heyman said on Monday, there must be a winner and there must be a loser. Heyman said the only Tribal Chief Roman Reigns will win on Monday. Heyman started to walk out of the ring and Sikoa’s music hit. Out came Sikoa, who was alone.

Sikoa stood across from Heyman in the ring and the crowd chanted “OTC!” Heyman said he was about 10 seconds away from pissing in his pants because the last time they did what they were doing, Sikoa had Heyman put through a table. Sikoa put out his hand for Heyman’s microphone and Heyman gave Sikoa the mic. “Solo sucks!” chants began. Sikoa told Phoenix, Arizona to acknowledge him and the boos broke out.

Sikoa said it was time for Heyman to come to terms with the truth. Sikoa said Heyman owes CM Punk a favor and now Sikoa was asking Heyman for a favor – to hold the Ula Fala during Monday’s Tribal Combat match. Sikoa said if Roman wins, Heyman will put the Ula Fala around Roman’s neck and Sikoa will acknowledge Roman as the Tribal Chief. However, Sikoa said when he beats Roman – and he will – Heyman will have to put the Ula Fala around Sikoa’s neck and that will mean he owns Heyman and Heyman will be Sikoa’s Wise Man forever. At that point, Sikoa said, Roman will have no choice but to finally acknowledge him.

Heyman received the microphone back from Sikoa and Heyman laid the microphone down in the mat before leaving the ring. Sikoa’s music hit to end the segment.

#DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) fought Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley) to a no-contest for the WWE Tag Team Championship [10:52]

The was perhaps the best MCMG WWE TV match thus far and the crowd responded as such. That’s promising because as I’ve been saying for the last couple weeks in this space, Shelley and Sabin simply have not been able to find a crowd to give a hoot about them when they make their SmackDown entrances. This was a step in the right direction. I don’t mind the copout finish – this was a tag title match that wasn’t even advertised ahead of time – but I say that only with the caveat that these two teams get more time somewhere down the line and can truly have an opportunity to move a live crowd, which it felt like they were about to do here. The other end of that? Please don’t make this a four-way ordeal that includes Pretty Deadly and Angel and Berto.

Ciampa and Sabin started the match. Sabin quickly gained the upper hand with an arm drag. Shelley tagged in and MCMG kicked Gargano to the outside. Sabin tagged in and MCMG landed a double clothesline on Ciampa. While running the ropes, Gargano tagged himself in and that led to Ciampa and Gargano being on the outside. Sabin leapt through Shelley’s legs and hit a suicide dive on Gargano and Ciampa. The show then went to a commercial break.

The show returned and the heels were on the offensive until Ciampa ran into a leaping kick from Sabin. Shelley received the hot tag and Gargano tagged in as well. Shelley landed a neck-breaker on Gargano for a two-count. Sabin tagged in the two hit stereo splashes on Ciampa and Gargano, who were on the outside. Back in the ring, Shelley tagged in and MCMG worked a series of double-team moves on Gargano before a pin attempt that Ciampa broke up.

Sabin and Ciampa traded strikes in the middle of the ring. Lots and lots of super-kicks were had by everyone all four wrestlers were down in the middle of the ring. Ciampa and Shelley wound up being the legal men and Ciampa chopped the hell out of Shelley. Shelley returned the favor. Sabin tagged in and MCMG landed a fury of double-team moves on Ciampa. MCMG went for Skull And Bones, but Pretty Deadly ran out and distracted MCMG. #DIY took advantage and it looked like Gargano was going to get the win after a super-kick, but Shelley kicked out at the last tenth of a second. Los Garza ran out to chase Pretty Deadly away and right as MCMG looked as though they might win, the brawl between Pretty Deadly and Los Garza spilled into the ring and that ended the match.

– Nia Jax and Candice LeRae were talking in the locker room and Jax wondered where Tiffany Stratton was. Jax then told LeRae to make sure Bianca Belair doesn’t interfere in her match later.

– Sami Zayn was walking backstage and ran into Carmelo Hayes. Zayn talked about how Melo ran away last week and Melo said Zayn could “get this work.” Jey and Jimmy Uso showed up and asked Melo if they have a problem. Melo kind of pouted and left. Zayn walked away to get ready for the main event and the Usos ran into Kevin Owens, who told the Usos they need to watch their backs.

– Cody was walking backstage and Aldis walked up to him. Aldis said Cody seems like he’s hellbent on not making it to the Royal Rumble. Aldis pleaded with Cody to think about his future. Aldis said if Cody won’t do that, Aldis will do that for Cody. Cody said Aldis is the boss, but Cody is the champ, and because of that, he deserves the ability to call his shot. Cody said if he sees Kevin Owens or anyone who looks like Kevin Owens, he will “drop them on site.”

Nia Jax defeated Naomi to retain the WWE Women’s Championship [19:32]

Naomi started quick with a pair of kicks. Naomi went for Jax’s legs, but Jax rebounded and toyed with Naomi as a response until a drop-toe-hold took Jax down. Naomi was on the apron and Naomi kicked Jax in the head, but Jax came back with a headbutt that took Naomi to the floor. Jax posed in the ring and the show went to a commercial break.

The show returned and Naomi got caught only to be slammed by Jax for a two-count. Naomi tried to fight back, but Jax cut her off with a bodyslam and an elbow drop for a two-count. Jax worked a rear chin-lock and that was broken up when Jax ran Naomi into the ring post. Jax crushed Naomi’s head against the ring post and a two-count from Jax came after that. Jax lifted Naomi, but Naomi rolled into a sunset flip and a pin attempt. Jax hopped up and clotheslined Naomi.

Jax set up for her finisher, but Naomi kicked Jax’s leg and followed that up with a double-stomp and her split-leg-drop for a two-count. Jax ran at Naomi, but Naomi moved and Jax ran into the ring post. Jax found herself on the outside and Naomi landed a suicide dive before rolling Jax back into the ring. Naomi landed a series of double axe-handles. Naomi hit an enziguri and an impressive Samoan Drop for a good near-fall.

Naomi set up for a split-legged moonsault, but Jax cut Naomi off and put her in a Tree Of Woe. From there, Jax hit a leg drop from the second rope for a good near-fall. Jax set up for her finisher again, but Naomi pulled Jax off the ropes and landed a Tornado DDT for another good near-fall. Naomi planted Jax with a draping DDT for another good near-fall. The show then actually went to yet another commercial break at about the 13-minute mark of the match.

The show came back and Naomi landed a Blockbuster for a two-count. Out of nowhere, Naomi slammed Jax for a great near-fall. Belair and LeRae started brawling on the outside of the ring while Naomi went for a submission. Jax broke it and threw a tag title at Belair to break up the outside brawl. Jax went to the second rope and Naomi cut her off … until Jax countered with an attempted powerslam from the second rope, but Naomi countered that with a slam of her own.

Tiffany Stratton’s music hit and Stratton finally looked like she was going to cash in, but instead, Stratton hit Naomi in the head with her briefcase. After that help from Stratton, Jax hit her finisher on Naomi and got the win.

Tiffany Stratton defeated Nia Jax to become the new WWE Women’s Champion [0:04]

Finally. It felt like it was coming tonight, and I hoped it was coming tonight, and the crowd hoped it was coming tonight, and damn it, if they would have ended the segment with Stratton simply helping Jax retain, every single viewer on television and in the arena would have screamed about how this whole story jumped the shark … but it didn’t. I loved it. The crowd loved it. Actually, I loved everything about this, including the match between Naomi and Jax, who had another really good wrestling match before all the MITB stuff. Better yet, they were given almost 20 minutes, so for those of us not all that happy that SmackDown added an hour to its programming, the ability to give matches like this almost 20 minutes is a fruitful tradeoff. Naomi and Jax worked their asses off. If you watch one thing from this episode, it’d be this match. The Heyman promo is a strong No. 2, to boot. Really good stuff here. It’s fun when SmackDown gets fun, and that doesn’t happen as much as it used to these days. Kudos to everyone involved.

After the match, Jax tried to attack Belair and Stratton hit Jax with her briefcase to an enormous pop. Belair hit a KOD on Jax and Stratton threw Belair over the commentary table. Stratton then officially cashed in with Jax out. Stratton hit the Prettiest Moonsault Ever and within four seconds, Stratton was your new WWE Women’s Champion. The crowd went nuts.

– A vignette setting up the Bloodline match on Monday aired.

– The Bloodline was shown walking backstage and Jacob Fatu kept screaming “I love you, Solo!” Fatu said he was going to show the world what happens when the world doesn’t acknowledge the one and only Tribal Chief. Sikoa’s music hit and the trio walked to the ring for the main event with about 35 minutes left in the program.

– Byron Saxton caught up with LA Knight backstage. Knight said he was talking to Nick Aldis about why he attacked Nakamura. Knight said he returned the favor when it came to how Nakamura attacked Knight every week before their U.S. title match last year. Knight then announced that next week, he will take on Nakamura for the United States Championship.

– The Usos and Sami Zayn made their way through the concessions stands and the crowd to make their entrances for the main event.

The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu & Tama Tonga) defeated Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso & Sami Zayn [22:37]

The outcome was predictable, if only because Sikoa is the one going into a Very Important Match at WWE’s next Very Important Event. But that didn’t take anything away from the finish, which I thought was kind of clever, with Jey thinking he had the thing won and Sikoa using the Spike to get the victory. I probably could have done without the McIntyre appearance near the end, but lest we forget: Raw on Netflix is coming and he has a match with Jey Uso. Anything over 20 minutes felt like a bit too much here, especially with the extended entrance from the babyface team, and because of that, it felt like this would have probably been a better dark match, but who am I to judge. In all, a fine-enough main event (though Tiffy’s cash in would have probably made for a better moment to end the show, if we’re being honest). Three hours, eh? We’ll see.

All six men stood in the ring and brawled immediately to start the match. Sikoa and his Bloodline found themselves on the outside of the ring and the show went to a break. Back from the break, Jey worked Fatu’s arm until Tonga was tagged in. Jey and Tonga locked up and Tonga got the best of Jey at first. Jey came back by whipping Tonga into a corner and Zayn tagged in to hit a double axe-handle from the second rope on Tonga. Jimmy tagged in and kept control for the babyfaces until Sikoa interfered and whipped Jimmy’s neck across the top rope.

Sikoa tagged in and worked over Jimmy. Before long, Jimmy got the upper hand and tagged in Zayn, who fired up against Sikoa, complete with a clothesline. Zayn came off the middle rope, but Sikoa caught Zayn and hit Zayn with a Spinning Solo. The show then went to a commercial break. Back from the break, Sikoa hit a Samoan Drop on Zayn. Zayn fired back with a chop, but Sikoa came back with a chop of his own. Tonga tagged in and worked a wild ground and pound on Zayn.

Fatu tagged in and landed a hip attack on Zayn. Sikoa tagged in and headbutted Zayn. It wasn’t long before Zayn hit a Blue Thunder Bomb on Sikoa, out of nowhere, and got the hot tag to Jey. Tonga tagged in as well, but Jey controlled Tonga with kicks, punches and chops. Jimmy tagged in and the Usos hit stereo enziguris. Jimmy and Jey then faced Fatu, who was clotheslined over the top rope. Jey hit a pop-up neck-breaker on Tonga for a good near-fall.

A brawl broke out on the outside of the ring while Tonga DDT’d Jey for a near-fall inside the ring. Fatu tagged in, but Jey super-kicked him and tagged in Zayn, who tagged in Jimmy. Jey, Jimmy and Sami hit hip attacks on Fatu and Zayn and Jey landed suicide dives on Tonga and Sikoa. Jimmy, inside the ring, hit an Uso Splash on Fatu for a two-count. Fatu super-kicked Jimmy and went to the top, where Fatu hit a splash and a moonsault on Jimmy, but Zayn broke up a pin attempt.

Fatu threw Zayn over the top rope and set up Jimmy for something, but Jimmy ran Fatu into a corner. Jey tagged in and Jimmy and Jey hit a double super-kick for a two-count. Drew McIntyre then walked out with no music or anything of the like. Jey was distracted before he hit a suicide dive on McIntyre. Jey went to the top, but missed a splash on Fatu. Fatu followed that up with a pop-up Samoan Drop for a nice near-fall. Sikoa tagged in and Jey super-kicked Sikoa. Jey speared Fatu, but Fatu wasn’t the legal man. After Jey hit a splash and went for a pin, Sikoa returned to the ring and hit the Samoan Spike on Jey for the win.

The show ended with a rundown of the Raw on Netflix card and The Bloodline standing tall in the ring.

Shinsuke Nakamura wins United States title at WWE Survivor Series

Shinsuke Nakamura is now a three-time WWE United States Champion.

At Survivor Series: WarGames on Saturday, Nakamura pinned LA Knight to win the United States Championship. The title change comes just a couple of weeks after a repackaged Nakamura made his return to WWE programming, targeting Knight in the process. We’ve seen a more sinister version of the Nakamura character since then with changes to his look and entrance.

Nakamura raked Knight’s eyes near the end of the match and delivered a reverse DDT onto the steel connecting the two rings for WarGames. A Kinshasa then got the victory for Nakamura.

Knight had been U.S. Champion since dethroning Logan Paul at SummerSlam this August. The commentary team tonight pushed that Knight did not look right in the match because he was affected by Nakamura’s mind games.

Before this, Nakamura’s most recent title reign was a run with the Intercontinental Championship in 2021-2022. It’s been nearly six years since he last held the U.S. title.

Though he spent several months away from WWE television this year, the 44-year-old Nakamura still worked house shows during that period. He returned to TV on the November 15 episode of SmackDown.

Shinsuke Nakamura returns, attacks LA Knight on WWE SmackDown

Shinsuke Nakaumura is back, and he has a target.

Friday’s SmackDown saw Nakamura make his WWE television return by attacking LA Knight, who had just successfully defended the United States title against Berto in an open challenge match. Nakamura sported a new look, wearing all back and wearing red facepaint as he laid out Knight with the kinshasa. The segment ended with Nakamura walking away, his hair covering his face.

Nakamura had disappeared from WWE television since April when he was moved back to SmackDown as part of the 2024 WWE Draft. He did, however, work house shows over the summer in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Last month, he lost to Knight during WWE’s tour in England in matches that were for the United States title.

It was announced last month that Nakamura would be returning to Pro Wrestling NOAH on January 1, where he will face Ulka Sasaki. He previously worked for NOAH back in 2023, when he defeated The Great Muta.

Shinsuke Nakamura returning to Pro Wrestling NOAH on January 1

Shinsuke Nakamura is headed back to Pro Wrestling NOAH.

Nakamura vs. Ulka Sasaki has been announced for NOAH The New Year 2025 on January 1, 2025, at the Nippon Budokan. It will be his first match for the promotion since defeating The Great Muta at The New Year 2023. The match was Keiji Muto’s final time performing as Muta.

The news was announced today during NOAH’s show at Korakuen Hall.

“NOAH, it’s been a while. After that miraculous fight, WWE’s SHINSUKE NAKAMURA will return to Nippon Budokan on New Year’s Day! Who will be standing in front of me?”

https://twitter.com/noahglobal/status/1845786616893452529

Sasaki is a former UFC and Rizin fighter who made his pro wrestling debut 11 months ago.

Nakamura hasn’t wrestled a match on WWE programming since the April 22, 2024, episode of Raw when he lost to Sheamus. He has been on house shows, however, and was defeated by LA Knight at WWE’s live event in Cardiff, Wales last night.

The 44-year-old was voted into The Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame Class of 2015. He was voted Wrestler of the Year in 2014 and had Match of the Year with Kota Ibushi in 2015 at Wrestle Kingdom.

WWE’s Shinsuke Nakamura corners fighter at UFC 303

Current WWE star and former MMA fighter Shinsuke Nakamura crossed over into the world of UFC on Saturday night, but not by sitting in the crowd as some of his co-workers have. Rather, he did so as a cornerman.

The 44-year-old worked the corner of Rei Tsuruya on the UFC 303 undercard in Las Vegas as he picked up a unanimous decision victory to run his record to 10-0. Tsuruya even entered to Nakamura’s WWE entrance theme.

Nakamura said in a post-fight interview with Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter that he is good friends with Tsuruya’s father (also a former fighter) who asked him if he would corner his son for his debut which Nakamura said it was an honor to do.

He said he still has a passion for MMA and fighting into addition to wrestling and wants to stay in WWE.

It was Tsuruya’s promotional debut after picking up a win on the company’s Road to UFC series.

Asked about Nakamura afterward by the media, the 22-year-old Tsuruya said, “He’s such a superstar, but here for me. I’m just so honored and so thankful.”

Nakamura was also present at a Slap Fight show on Friday night alongside Rey Mysterio, prompting him to share a photo of “Rey and Rei” on social media.

Nakamura competed five times in MMA from 2002 through 2004, compiling a 3-1-0-1 record. He opened his career with a loss to Daniel Gracie, a member of the famed MMA and BJJ family.

Show Recap —

(In the poor timing department, the show that aired before Raw on Sportsnet in Canada had Vince McMahon all over it. Mick Foley surprised him in his office in character as Mankind along with Stephanie. They both spoke very highly of Vince throughout.)

********

There was a recap of the Cody Rhodes, Rock, and Roman Reigns segment on Smackdown.

Seth Rollins entered to a strong reaction. Michael Cole noted that he was still not medically cleared to compete.

Rollins was in a good mood. He mentioned what happened on Smackdown and the crowd chanted for Cody Rhodes.

Rolins called out Rhodes and Rhodes entered. There were “We Want Cody” signs and Cole mentioned the online reaction since Friday.

Rhodes asked what they wanted to talk about and there was a “Rocky sucks” chant (not overwhelmingly loud). Cole asked if it was 1996 again and Rollins acted surprised by the chant.

Rollins understood what Rhodes was going through but he needed an answer. Rollins called his belt the most prestigious in the industry and that drew some boos. Rollins said he needed the match against Rhodes as much as Rhodes did.

Rollins wanted to know that he was better than he was the last time they wrestled. Rollins wanted to know if he was the best and needed to test himself against the best and that was Rhodes. Rollins asked if he would fight him at WrestleMania. People booed.

Drew McIntyre interrupted. McIntyre wondered how they screwed everything up. He said he and Rollins were supposed to have a segment tonight setting up a title match at WrestleMania. McIntyre sarcastically told Rhodes that he needed to finish his story. McIntyre told Rhodes not to let down his family and fans. McIntyre told him not to let his dad down.

Rollins told McIntyre not to be a prick. Rollins also said there was no reason for McIntyre to think he’d be his challenger if Rhodes didn’t accept because he already beat him. McIntyre reminded Rollins how many times he lost to Rhodes.

McIntyre said nobody wanted to fight Roman Reigns anymore because we already knew the finish — his family would interfere to help him.

McIntyre put over the work Rollins has done as champion but said it was someone to take the title from him. McIntyre headbutted Rollins so Rhodes chucked McIntyre from the ring.

The segment ended without Rhodes giving an answer.

Fatal four-way tag team match: Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa defeated Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods and The Creed Brothers (17:36)

The match picked up after a break once Woods made a hot tag and ran wild until Gargano cut him off with a slingshot spear. DIY hit dives on the Creed Brothers before Gargano hit Imperium with a suicide dive. Julius Creed wiped out a bunch of guys with a flip dive. As everyone brawled outside the ring, Ciampa gave Woods an insane White Noise off the ropes into everyone. (This led to a second commercial break just nine minutes into the match.)

There was a tower of doom spot where New Day brought down Imperium and Ciampa with powerbombs. Brutus hit Kaiser with a moonsault but the cover was broken up. Everyone traded moves (including Kingston using the fameasser) until Brutus put Vinci in an ankle lock. Julius handed out suplexes to everyone who tried breaking up the hold and did a double Northern Lights. DIY finally did break up the ankle lock.

Brutus wiped out a bunch of guys with a Brutus ball before hitting one on Vinci in the ring. DIY broke up the cover and hit Vinci with Meet in the Middle for the pinfall win. (Gargano initially made the cover but Ciampa quickly shoved him off and made the cover instead because Gargano wasn’t the legal man.)

Gargano and Ciampa will face Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate.

This was a fun match.

********

Shayna Baszler said she would tear Becky Lynch apart limb by limb.

Lynch said she would beat Baszler tonight because her future was on the line.

Elimination Chamber qualifier: Becky Lynch defeated Shayna Baszler (12:42)

Baszler stomped Lynch’s hand into the steel steps and they went to break. Lynch fought back after the break (while still selling her hand) but Baszler caught her with a German suplex and sliding knee for two. Lynch responded with a missile dropkick for two.

[SECOND HOUR]

Baszler blocked a Disarmer and hit a knee strike for two. Baszler blocked a Man-handle Slam and applied an ankle lock. Lynch got out of it but Baszler went back after the arm. Lynch fought back and hit a superplex. Lynch tried transitioning into an armbar but Baszler blocked it and hit a gutwrench slam for two.

They slapped each other back and forth until Baszler tried the Kirifuda Clutch. They traded counters until Lynch hit the Man-handle Slam for the pinfall win. (The crowd liked Lynch but was relatively quiet for the match.)

Cole said Lynch would be in the Elimination Chamber for the first time.

********

Cathy Kelley interviewed Liv Morgan. Morgan said she had almost a year taken away from her and that was a very long time. Morgan said next week would be about her revenge on Rhea Ripley.

They showed the clip of Shinsuke Nakamura spraying (spitting) mist in Rhodes’ face at a house show over the weekend.

Backstage, Adam Pearce admonished McIntyre for attacking CM Punk (last week) and Rollins who were both already injured. Pearce fined him.

It seemed like Pearce had more to say but Rhea Ripley’s music hit and she entered the ring. McIntyre called her a real leader and told Pearce he should probably go do his job.

Rhea Ripley segment

Ripley was pissed and didn’t care about Elimination Chamber because she wanted Nia Jax right now so she could rip her bloody head off. Pearce marched out and said this was not the time. Pearce booked her in a title match against Jax at Elimination Chamber. The crowd booed but Ripley was happy.

Pearce asked her to leave but Jax marched out. Jax shoved Pearce out of the way and brawled with Ripley until security ran out to separate them. As they held back Ripley, Jax knocked her down and tossed aside security. Jax hit Ripley with the Annihilator.

They showed some media reactions to the Rock’s Smackdown segment.

Mixed tag match: Ivar & Valhalla defeated Akira Tozawa & Maxxine Dupri (2:03)

Tozawa tried a sunset flip powerbomb but Ivar blocked it. Ivar hoisted him up easily with one hand and hit the World’s Strongest Slam from the middle rope for the pinfall win.

It’s not her fault of course but they gave Dupri too much to do and she couldn’t pull it off. The crowd used to pop when she said “Thank you” but she did it here after botching a move and they were silent.

(Dupri and Tozawa spent more time standing in the ring before the match than they did wrestling.)

Finn Bálor and Damain Priest agreed that it didn’t matter who they were facing next for the tag titles. Priest told JD McDonagh that he should handle Miz tonight.

Truth showed up and acted friendly as if nothing happened last week. He figured the beatdown was just an initiation (again). McDonagh said Truth was lucky he had a match right now. McDonagh left with Dominik. Bálor was frustrated so he left too. Priest shrugged it off and told Truth to make himself at home. The crowd cheered for that.

The Miz defeated JD McDonagh (w/Dominik Mysterio) (9:47)

McDonagh took control with help from Dom ahead of a break. Truth entered after the break to wake up the crowd. He tossed Judgment Day t-shirts into the crowd which distracted McDonagh. The fans were all watching Truth as Miz made his comeback in the ring.

As Dom leaned against the barricade, Truth popped up behind him and put a shirt over him. Dom couldn’t move his arms in the shirt so Miz booted him.

Truth handed McDonagh a wad of cash and McDonagh gladly accepted. Miz used the distraction to hit Skull Crushing Finale (and the cash went flying) for the pinfall win. (Miz made sure to turn McDonagh to face the hard cam as he did his finisher but, funny enough, they weren’t even using that camera angle. )

Truth collected as much of the money as he could and posed with Miz on the stage.

Vinci and Kaiser (now wearing suits) pestered Pearce because they wanted Gunther’s celebration to be perfect. He assured him that it would be.

Bron Breakker appeared and the crowd popped. Imperium left. Pearce explained his contract offer to Bron as they went to break.

There was video of Punk following his surgery. He said his comeback would be the greatest of all time.

[THIRD HOUR]

Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship Celebration

Kaiser introduced Gunther. The ring was dressed in a black carpet with four pillars. All three men wore all-black suits.

Gunther appreciated the celebration but he didn’t want celebrations anymore. It was a given that he would get to 700 and 800 and 900 days and he would go down as the greatest IC champion ever. Gunther said there was no more competition.

Jey Uso entered to a big reaction. Gunther mocked the fans doing his pose and called it a simple gesture for a simple audience. Gunther said he eliminated Jey from the Royal Rumble match and was sensing some disrespect from him now.

Jey meant no disrespect. Jey put over Gunther as the crowd yelled “Yeet.” Gunther appreciated the kind words and put over Jey as one of the greatest tag team wrestlers ever. The Usos were the longest-reigning tag champions ever and Jey only had to put in 50% of the work for it. Gunther achieved his accomplishment on his own.

Jey said Gunther was about to get 100% of this work. Jey said he would win singles gold in 2024 and told the crowd to say “Yeet” if they wanted him to be the next IC champion. They said Yeet.

Gunther said it only took Jey 15 years to develop the guts to step up on his own. Jey wasn’t the first to try to ride his coattails. Gunther would beat him worse than his family ever could and Jey would go back to the days of people not being able to tell him and his brother apart.

Gunther shoved Jey so Jey tackled Gunther. Kaiser and VInci swarmed Jey so New Day ran out to make the save.

There was a Shinsuke Nakamura video promo. He said he would beat Rhodes in the match his family made famous.

(It was hard to take this seriously after he’s already lost repeatedly to Rhodes.)

There was a WrestleMania commercial. The video ended with a clip of Rhodes pointing at the sign followed by the face-off with Rock and Reigns.

Asuka & Kairi Sane defeated Kayden Carter & Katana Chance to retain the Women’s Tag Team Championships (9:50)

Chance wiped out the champs with a dive before a break but Cole let us know that Asuka and Sane dominated through the break. Sane went for some sort of splash off the top but Carter was never in position and Sane completely missed. Chance tagged in and hit a double foot stomp for two.

Carter and Chance hit Asuka with After Party but Sane (barely) broke up the cover. They set up for Keg Stand but Sane tripped Carter and shoved her into the steps. Asuka kicked Chance in the head and Sane hit the Insane Elbow for the pinfall.

(This wasn’t much of a match and the crowd was dead silent for it.)

Redmond sat down with Sami Zayn for an interview before the show. Zayn spoke about coming up short against Roman Reigns in Montreal. Triple H pulled him aside and told him he had nothing to be ashamed of. Triple H compared him to Rocky and Zayn said he would give it everything in the ring. He wasn’t an underdog anymore, he was a contender and a contender who would be champion.

Zayn did still have something to prove but he wanted to prove it to the fans. He wanted to prove them right.

Next week on Raw:

Bull Rope Match: Cody Rhodes defeated Shinsuke Nakamura (16:50)

They went to break 50 seconds into the match. Rhodes used the rope to yank Nakamura repeatedly into the ring post. Rhodes went for a springboard move but Nakamura yanked him down with the rope. Nakamura was in control until Rhodes kicked his leg out of his leg and applied a figure four but Nakamura hit him with the rope’s cowbell to break it up.

After another break (nine minutes into the match), Rhodes hit a powerslam and Disaster kick for two. Nakamura hit a sliding German suplex but Rhodes came back with a Cody Cutter. Rhodes hit jabs and a bionic elbow but Nakamura hit a spinning kick and inverted exploder. Rhodes responded with a Pedigree for two.

Rhodes went to hit Nakamura with the cowbell but Nakamura misted him. Rhodes fought him off anyway and hit a Cross Rhodes but Nakamura kicked out.

Nakamura used the cowbell as a weapon but Rhodes blocked a Kinshasa and used the rope to low blow Nakamura. Rhodes emphatically hit another Cross Rhodes for the pinfall win. The last few moments were good.

— McIntyre attacked Rhodes from behind and laid him out with a Claymore Kick.

Cody Rhodes vs. Nakamura bull rope match booked for WWE Raw

Amid the fan backlash over him seemingly not headlining WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes is set for action on this Monday’s episode of Raw.

Rhodes will renew his rivalry with Shinsuke Nakamura in a bull rope match on Raw this Monday (February 5). The match comes after an angle where Nakamura blindsided Rhodes with mist to the face backstage at WWE’s house show in Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday.

WWE uploaded a video today with Raw general manager Adam Pearce announcing the Rhodes vs. Nakamura bull rope match for Raw. Pearce said Rhodes requested the bull rope stipulation.

On the January 8 episode of Raw, Rhodes defeated Nakamura in a street fight to prevail in their rivalry. But Nakamura cut a promo after that warning Rhodes to keep his eyes open. Nakamura said their story isn’t over until he says it’s over.

After winning the men’s Royal Rumble match,  Rhodes said on SmackDown last Friday that he’s coming after Roman Reigns — but not at WrestleMania. Rhodes then brought out The Rock for a confrontation with Reigns. There’s been significant fan backlash on social media since then over The Rock seemingly taking Rhodes’ WrestleMania main event spot.

Raw is taking place from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri on Monday. The updated card is listed below:

  • Bull rope match: Cody Rhodes vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

  • Gunther celebrates passing 600 days as Intercontinental Champion

  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors defend against Katana Chance & Kayden Carter
  • The Miz vs. JD McDonagh
  • Mixed tag match: Akira Tozawa & Maxxine Dupri vs. Ivar & Valhalla
  • Fatal four-way match: DIY vs. The Creed Brothers vs. Imperium vs. New Day (winning team faces Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate in a number one contender’s match on SmackDown)
