The full lineup for WWE’s World Cup tournament will be confirmed on tomorrow’s episode of SmackDown.
Rey Mysterio vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for a spot in the tournament had already been made official for this week’s episode, and WWE has announced that Rusev will also face The Miz in a qualifying match.
There will be eight wrestlers in the WWE World Cup, with four coming from Raw and four coming from SmackDown. John Cena, Kurt Angle, Seth Rollins, Jeff Hardy, and Randy Orton are already set for it. A qualifying match between Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler will take place later on Raw tonight.
The World Cup will be held at Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 2. WWE is promoting that the tournament is to “determine the best in the world.”
Tomorrow’s SmackDown is the 1,000th episode of the show. Appearances by Evolution (Triple H, Batista, Orton, and Ric Flair) and The Undertaker have also been announced for SmackDown 1000.
Finn Balor & Bayley vs. Jinder Mahal & Alicia Fox and Jimmy Uso & Naomi vs. Rusev & Lana are the matches that will be taking place on week three of Mixed Match Challenge season two.
With this being a round-robin tournament, Mahal & Fox will be wrestling on Mixed Match Challenge for the second straight week. They lost to Bobby Lashley & Mickie James last night. The Miz & Asuka also defeated R-Truth & Carmella on this week’s episode.
WWE started building to Balor & Bayley vs. Mahal & Fox with Balor defeating Mahal in a singles match on Monday’s Raw.
Uso & Naomi wrestled on the season two premiere of Mixed Match Challenge, losing to AJ Styles & Charlotte Flair.
This season of Mixed Match Challenge will culminate with the finals being held at TLC on December 16, where the team that wins the Raw block will face the winners of the SmackDown block. Here are the updated standings:
Tonight’s SmackDown from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma features the fallout from Hell in a Cell.
WWE Champion AJ Styles takes on Andrade “Cien” Almas in a non-title match. Styles defeated Samoa Joe at Hell in a Cell, but the match ended in controversy due to Styles tapping out while pinning Joe. Styles and Joe are set to clash in a rematch at Super Show-Down on October 6.
Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell to become a two-time SmackDown Women’s Champion. Lynch refused to shake Flair’s hand after the match. The former best friends are headed on a collision course towards their rematch at Super Show-Down.
Miz TV returns tonight with a “special mystery guest.” Miz and Maryse defeated Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella at Hell in a Cell. Miz takes on Bryan at Super Show-Down for a future WWE title shot. However, first Miz plans to steal the spotlight with his surprise guest.
Plus, United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defends against Rusev.
Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern.
**********
Miz was in the ring to start off SmackDown with the latest edition of Miz TV. Before he brought out the special guest he had some breaking news. He announced that he takes on Daniel Bryan at Super Show-Down, although it was already announced. He promised to defeat Bryan and move onto capturing the WWE Championship.
Miz noted that he had to pull some strings to get his guest on the show. He introduced the special mystery guest his wife Maryse. Miz said it was an honor to have her as his guest. Maryse said that beating Brie Bella was the easiest thing she’s ever done. She feels Bella’s heart wasn’t in the match and Miz said Bella’s heart isn’t in her relationship either. They added Bella only married Bryan to stay relevant and Bryan just wants her to fight his battles.
Maryse announced that tonight is her last night on SmackDown for a little while. She’s going to return home to be the best mother in the world. Miz became enraged when fans began booing Maryse. Miz called out Bryan and promised to beat him down. Bryan came out and attacked Miz for insulting his wife.
Bryan dropkicked Miz and he crashed into Maryse. She went down for several minutes. Miz and Bryan were both concerned and checked on her. Bryan was distraught over his actions and expressed his remorse.
Maryse started to laugh and Miz jumped Bryan from behind. Bryan fought him off. Miz charged at Bryan but he moved and Miz collided with Maryse again.
Daniel Bryan was interviewed in the back. He was asked how he knew that Miz and Maryse were up to something. Bryan noted that he knows Miz’s tricks and he knew they had some type of plan. Not only is he going to punch Miz in the face at Super Show-Down but he’s also going to punch his ticket to a WWE Championship opportunity.
Before the match, Kingston recapped defeating Rusev Day and Woods promised to defeat The Bar at Super Show-Down. Big E started doing an Australian accent but Kingston said the accent was offensive. Big E said the IIconics said it was okay.
Cesaro had the early advantage and worked over Kingston’s leg. Kingston fought back and scored several near falls. Cesaro rocked Kingston with a European uppercut to take back over. Kingston hit a tornado DDT for a near fall.
Kingston bounced off the top rope and landed on Cesaro. This was a unique move that not even Woods had seen. Finish came when Cesaro kicked Kingston in the leg and hit the Neutralizer for the win.
Backstage, Aiden English met with Rusev and Lana. English has a good feeling about Rusev’s match tonight. Rusev doesn’t want English at ringside. Rusev and Lana left.
English was upset and started insulting Lana and Rusev to a random backstage worker. English blamed Lana for all of Rusev’s problems. English turned around and Lana was still there. She left to tell Rusev but English ran after her.
The announcers started talking about Hell in a Cell but Tom Philips said there was a commotion in the production truck.
In the truck, Randy Orton forced one of the workers to bring up the footage of Orton sticking a screwdriver in Jeff Hardy’s ear piercing at Hell in a Cell. Orton said what he did to Hardy will pale in comparison to what he does to his next victim.
Backstage, WWE Champion AJ Styles discussed the controversial finish from the pay-per-view. He felt that lady luck was shining down on him and the referee’s decision is final. He said maybe it was karma. He stopped himself from talking about Joe and focused his attention on Andrade “Cien” Almas.
United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Rusev (w/Lana & Aiden English)
Backstage before the match, Lana tried to tell Rusev what Aiden English had said. Rusev didn’t have time to hear because he’s heading out for his match. Rusev asked English to do his introduction.
Rusev was in control early in the match. Nakamura hung Rusev on the top rope throat first and hit a dropkick for a near fall. Nakamura was firmly in control while Lana and English argued at ringside. English got on the mic and started a “Rusev Day” chant but Lana was disgusted.
Rusev fired up and made a comeback. He rocked Nakamura with a kick to the head for a close near fall. They fought on the apron and Nakamura nailed Rusev with a knee. Nakamura set up for the Kinshasa but Rusev nailed him with a Machka kick.
English jumped on the apron and yelled, “Rusev Crush.” This distracted Rusev and Nakamura rolled him up to retain the title.
After the match, English attacked Rusev with the microphone. English then sang “Happy Rusev Day” and dropped the mic on Rusev.
WWE Champion AJ Styles defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Zelina Vega) in a non-title match
Almas jumped Styles from behind before the bell rang. The referee checked to see if Styles was able to continue. Almas jumped Styles when the bell rang but Styles fought back. Almas hit a vicious kick to regain control. Almas hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a near fall. He attempted a second tilt-a-whirl backbreaker but Styles reversed into a DDT.
Almas rocked Styles with a back elbow for a near fall. Vega slapped Styles but it only fired him up. Almas attempted a moonsault but Styles moved. Almas landed on his feet and attempted a standing moonsault but Styles got the knees up. Styles attempted the Phenomenal Forearm but Almas pulled out his feet. Styles was hanging on the second rope and Almas hit a double foot stomp to the floor.
During the commercial break, Styles worked over the leg and used the Calf Crusher. Almas missed a knee in the corner and crashed on the floor. Styles hit a running knee on the apron. Styles hit a Phenomenal Forearm to the back of the neck for a two count.
Almas hit the double knees in the corner for a very close near fall. Almas attempted the Hammer Lock DDT but Styles countered into a pin but rolled out into the Styles Clash for the win.
After the match, Samoa Joe jumped Styles from behind. Styles fought back and Joe ran off into the crowd.
Asuka (w/Naomi) defeated Billie Kay (w/Peyton Royce)
Before the match, The IIconics called Naomi and Asuka the odd couple. They also mocked their dancing style.
Kay gained the advantage when Royce distracted Asuka. Kay rocked Asuka with a big boot for a near fall. Asuka applied the Asuka Lock out of nowhere for the win.
General Manager Paige introduced new SmackDown Woman’s Champion Becky Lynch for her championship celebration. Fans broke into a loud “You Deserve It” chant. Lynch said she’s not going to be left off the magazine covers or talk shows anymore. She noted that she doesn’t need balloons and a big celebration. Lynch called out Charlotte Flair.
Flair came down to the ring. She promised Paige that she wasn’t there to fight. Paige left the ring. Flair said Lynch was the better woman and came out to congratulate Lynch for winning. Flair said that Lynch threw away more than a friendship. Flair promised to win the title back at Super Show-Down. Flair noted it took Lynch two years to get the title back but she could lose it in one night.
Lynch said she stopped listening after Flair said she was the better woman. Lynch will allow Flair to raise her arm now. She changed her mind and demanded she put the belt around her waist. The crowd cheered that and chanted “Becky.”
Lynch just wants Flair to call her Queen. As Flair walked away, Lynch called her a “bitch.” Flair attacked Lynch and they brawled around ringside. Lynch took over and locked on the Dis-arm-her. The fans popped huge for Lynch and broke into another loud “Becky” chant.
Two matches have been made official for tomorrow’s episode of SmackDown.
It was announced today that United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura will be defending his title against Rusev on this week’s post-Hell in a Cell edition of SmackDown. WWE Champion AJ Styles vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas in a non-title match will also be taking place on the episode.
Nakamura wasn’t on last night’s Hell in a Cell card. Rusev was involved in the pre-show match, with The New Day retaining their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Rusev & Aiden English when Kofi Kingston pinned English. Nakamura vs. Rusev is also listed as the United States Championship match for November’s WWE Starrcade event.
Styles retained his title against Samoa Joe at Hell in a Cell, but the storyline coming out of the match was that Styles submitted in the Coquina Clutch while Joe was being pinned. Joe will again be challenging for the WWE Championship at Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on October 6, and WWE indicated last night that it will be a no DQ, no countout match where there must be a winner.
Styles previously defeated Almas in a non-title match on the July 17 episode of SmackDown.
The BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma is hosting tomorrow’s show.
WWE has revealed that Sunday’s SmackDown Tag Team title match will be airing on the Hell in a Cell pre-show.
SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. Rusev & Aiden English is listed for the pay-per-view’s pre-show on WWE.com. The match was announced this Tuesday after Rusev & English defeated Cesaro & Sheamus in the finals of SmackDown’s tournament to decide New Day’s challengers for the PPV.
Rusev & English also defeated SAnitY (Eric Young & Killian Dain) and The Usos in a triple threat match in the first round of the tournament.
The AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas is hosting Hell in a Cell on Sunday. The pre-show will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern time before the main card starts at 7 p.m. Eastern. Here’s the updated card for the PPV:
Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending against Braun Strowman in a Hell in a Cell match (Mick Foley will be the special guest referee)
WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Samoa Joe
Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey defending against Alexa Bliss
SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair defending against Becky Lynch
Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy in a Hell in a Cell match
Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse
Raw Tag Team Champions Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre defending against Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose
SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day defending against Rusev & Aiden English (pre-show)
It will be Cesaro & Sheamus vs. Rusev & Aiden English in the finals of SmackDown’s tag team tournament next week.
Rusev & English won tonight’s triple threat tournament match, defeating SAnitY (Eric Young & Killian Dain) and The Usos. For the finish, Rusev hit the Machka Kick on Young after English broke up a pin where Young rolled up Rusev and had his feet on the ropes. The ending furthered the story of Rusev Day being back on the same page after the dissension that had been building between Rusev, English, and Lana.
Cesaro & Sheamus defeated Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson and The Colons in the first tournament match last Tuesday. The team that wins Cesaro & Sheamus vs. Rusev & English will challenge for The New Day’s Tag Team titles at Hell in a Cell on September 16.
The Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana is hosting next week’s SmackDown. The episode is the go-home show for Hell in a Cell.
The Bar (Cesaro & Sheamus) will face either Rusev & Aiden English, The Usos, or SAnitY to decide The New Day’s SmackDown Tag Team title challengers for Hell in a Cell.
The first of two triple threat matches in SmackDown’s tag team tournament took place tonight, with Cesaro & Sheamus defeating Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson and The Colons to advance. Cesaro tagged in and stole the pin from The Colons, then he and Sheamus confronted The New Day (who were on commentary for the match).
A backstage segment aired where Paige told Rusev & English they’d be in the tournament, with the story being that English had approached her to state their case. She announced that they’d be facing The Usos and SAnitY in a triple threat match next Tuesday. The winning team will advance to a number one contender’s match that’s being held on SmackDown’s Hell in a Cell go-home show to determine who will challenge New Day at the pay-per-view.
Hell in a Cell is taking place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on September 16.
The card for SummerSlam is now up to 12 announced matches.
WWE revealed this morning that Rusev & Lana will be teaming against Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega in a mixed tag match on the SummerSlam pre-show. It’s the first match to be officially confirmed for the pre-show.
Vega has defeated Lana twice on SmackDown over the last two weeks. The story of their matches has been that, amid dissension between Rusev, Aiden English, and Lana, English has come out to try and help Lana, but it’s backfired and led to her losing.
Rusev wasn’t with Lana at ringside on the July 31 episode. Almas got on the apron to cause a distraction, English ran out to stop him, and Vega rolled up Lana for the pin.
This week, Rusev said they forgave English but suggested that he shouldn’t come out for Lana’s match. He ran down while Rusev and Almas were fighting, with English accidentally tackling Almas into Lana while she was climbing the top rope. Vega hit a double knee strike in the corner for the win.
Almas also defeated Rusev last month after English trying to break up a fight between Lana and Vega backfired.
SummerSlam will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 19. Here’s the updated lineup:
Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Roman Reigns
Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Ronda Rousey
WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Samoa Joe
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella defending against Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match
Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler defending against Seth Rollins
United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defending against Jeff Hardy
Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens (If Owens wins, he gets Strowman’s Money in the Bank briefcase)
Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin
SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers defending against The New Day
WWE Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander defending against Drew Gulak
Rusev & Lana vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega in a mixed tag match (pre-show)
They had the match of the night, with Rollins winning it with the Curb Stomp.
Submitted by David Smith from SmackDown’s house show in St. Louis, Missouri last night
– SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers defeated Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson and The Usos in a triple threat match to retain their titles
Rowan got the pin on Anderson.
– Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/ Zelina Vega) defeated Sin Cara
– Asuka, Becky Lynch & Nikki Cross defeated Peyton Royce, Billie Kay & Lana
They tried to get the heat on Lana for a couple minutes, which wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever seen. Asuka got the win with the Asuka Lock.
– United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Jeff Hardy to retain his title
Nakamura retained with the Kinshasa after both used low blows during the match. Randy Orton came out after, getting the biggest pop of the night with the show being in St. Louis. He attacked Hardy and hit him with an RKO.
– Daniel Bryan defeated The Miz
Bryan kicked out of the Skull Crushing Finale before winning with the running knee. He probably got the second biggest pop of the night.
– The New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) defeated Cesaro & Sheamus
Kingston pinned Cesaro. Xavier Woods wasn’t on the show.
– SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella defeated Naomi to retain her title
There were lots of “We want Ellsworth” chants, which sadly went unanswered. Carmella won with a feet-on-the-ropes pin.
– WWE Champion AJ Styles defeated Rusev (w/ Aiden English) and Samoa Joe in a triple threat match to retain his title
They had a basic three-way where the two heels tried to team up but kept betraying each other. Styles won after hitting Joe with the Phenomenal Forearm. Styles hung out around ringside for a good 10 minutes afterwards and took selfies with basically everyone.
Overall, a pretty solid, if unremarkable, house show. Nobody worked too hard, nobody seemed to get hurt, and the audience had a pretty good time.
More matches and segments have been announced for tonight’s episode of SmackDown.
Rusev vs. Xavier Woods and Becky Lynch vs. Peyton Royce have been added to the show. Both Rusev and Lynch won matches last week, with Rusev winning a gauntlet to become WWE Champion AJ Styles’ challenger for Extreme Rules and Lynch submitting Billie Kay.
The Bludgeon Brothers will also appear on Miz TV, and WWE is hyping that at least two of the cast members from Netflix’s GLOW will appear. Britt Baron (who plays Justine) and Sydelle Noel (who plays Cherry Bang) tweeted videos where they said they were going to add glow to the show and sent messages to Naomi, referencing her “feel the glow” catchphrase. Season two of GLOW will be uploaded to Netflix this Friday.
Tonight’s SmackDown is taking place at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. As was previously announced, Jeff Hardy will be defending the United States Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura on the episode.
Rusev was confirmed as AJ Styles’ next challenger as he won the number one contender’s gauntlet match on SmackDown last night.
Rusev came into the gauntlet last, submitting The Miz and winning a title shot against AJ Styles at Extreme Rules. He shook hands with Styles after the match, but Styles punched Aiden English when English pulled his hand back and mocked him.
Daniel Bryan defeated Big E and Samoa Joe in the gauntlet but was pinned by Miz. Bryan’s entrance had interrupted The Bludgeon Brothers as they were heading to the back after retaining their titles against Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson, and Harper & Rowan came back out to attack Bryan before he lost to Miz.
Also on SmackDown, Carmella and James Ellsworth gloated after Money in the Bank and were confronted by Asuka, Becky Lynch got a win against Billie Kay, and Shinsuke Nakamura and Jeff Hardy continued to feud following their match from last week.
SmackDown has its main event for next month’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
Rusev won a number one contender’s gauntlet match on SmackDown tonight and will be challenging for AJ Styles’ WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. Rusev entered the gauntlet last before submitting The Miz to win.
Styles came into the ring after the match and shook hands with Rusev. Aiden English then extended his hand to Styles until pulling it back and mocking him. Styles laid out English to close the show.
The story for much of the gauntlet revolved around Daniel Bryan. He entered first, with his entrance interrupting The Bludgeon Brothers, who had just retained their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson. Bryan defeated Big E, beat Samoa Joe by countout, and then was attacked by Harper & Rowan before losing to Miz.
Extreme Rules is taking place at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15. Here’s the updated card:
WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Rusev
Number one contender’s match for a future shot at Universal Champion Brock Lesnar (Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley already confirmed)
Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss defending against Nia Jax
With a surprising finish in the main event, SmackDown’s first three qualifiers for Money in the Bank took place last night.
Rusev defeated Daniel Bryan to earn a spot in the men’s ladder match, with WWE playing up that Bryan was affected by Big Cass laying him out at Backlash and all of the punishment he’s taken recently. The Miz also won a qualifier against Jeff Hardy, and he and Rusev join Finn Balor and Braun Strowman in the men’s match.
Charlotte Flair submitted Peyton Royce with the Figure Eight to join Ember Moon in the women’s ladder match.
Also on SmackDown, AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura made it clear that their feud isn’t over, Xavier Woods took on Cesaro, and Mandy Rose faced Becky Lynch.
Date: May 8, 2018 Location: Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD
The Big Takeaway —
Rusev beat Daniel Bryan pretty much clean to qualify for Money in the Bank. The story seems to be that Bryan has taken too much punishment the past few weeks, in part thanks to Big Cass, leading to tonight’s loss. (See more below.) Cass was not on the show.
The Miz beat Jeff Hardy to qualify as well, and Charlotte Flair beat Peyton Royce to qualify for the women’s ladder match.
There was no announcement made regarding the WWE Championship situation. Both AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura did interviews, but we’ll have to wait to find out what’s next.
Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega will debut in London next week.
Show Recap —
No intro or Backlash recap video. Paige came out to start the show as the announcers plugged tonight’s Money in the Bank qualifying matches. Paige said Backlash was the first co-branded pay per view (it wasn’t) and called it a smashing success (nope). She said we saw the first singles win for Daniel Bryan since his return and a surprise win by Carmella over Charlotte Flair.
Paige moved onto the WWE Championship situation. She said she didn’t foresee both men taking each other out with low-blows and added that we’d hear from both guys later tonight. Paige plugged MITB and said the winner of their ladder match will take the contract back to their brand, so she wanted the best from her superstars. The first qualify match is up next.
It didn’t take much time, but that was basically pointless.
The Miz defeated U.S. Champion Jeff Hardy in a non-title match to qualify for MITB (20:13)
Before the match, they aired clips of Miz winning MITB in 2010 and cashing in on Randy Orton. Tom Phillips called Miz and Jeff Hardy two of the all-time greats. They went to commercial two minutes into the match.
Miz crotched Hardy on the barricade, which was not a DQ, but Hardy came back with a diving clothesline off the barricade. They traded backslide attempts until Hardy managed to hit a Twist of Fate. He went to the top but Miz rolled to the apron. Miz then gave Hardy a neckbreaker on the apron, which looked painful. They went to commercial for the second time.
Hardy came back with fists and a Russian leg sweep. Miz tried a sleeper but Hardy hit him with Whisper in the Wind for a nearfall. Hardy then used a baseball slide to dump Miz to the outside then followed with a flip dive. Hardy went to the top but Miz crotched him again.
Miz tried a superplex but Hardy countered with a sunset flip powerbomb for a nearfall. Hardy countered a Skull Crushing Finale, hit a dropkick in the corner and another Twist of Fate. Hardy hit a Swanton Bomb, which looked like the finish, but at the two count, Miz quickly countered into a crucifix pin for the three count. Miz qualifies for MITB.
A perfectly fine match that didn’t need to be 20 minutes. The ending was clever but kind of made Hardy’s finishes look weak.
Backstage, Cesaro caught Sheamus eating Lucky Charms. Sheamus said eating them made him feel better after losing to Xavier Woods, which was a full week ago. Cesaro lightly mocked him for the loss and Sheamus dared him to do better tonight. They bumped fists. They began opening their gear only to discover their bags were filled with pancakes. They were pissed and tossed the pancakes everywhere.
A promo aired for Sanity.
Renee Young caught up with Nakamura outside his locker room. Young said Nakamura wasn’t cleared to compete tonight and asked if things were done with him and Styles. Nakamura responded, “No… speak English.”
Young said we know he can speak English, and Nakamura claimed to have forgotten it. Young wanted an answer, so Nakamura said Styles was “nuts,” (which some people laughed at) and they weren’t finished yet.
Carmella cut a selfie promo where she bragged and laughed about beating Charlotte. She wanted to party, but not in Baltimore. The party would be in the UK next week. She said it would be a royal celebration but the royal family wasn’t invited.
Tye Dillinger and Naomi cut separate selfie promos suggesting they would win MITB. Dillinger said it would be a perfect ten and Naomi said the champion would feel the glow. Dillinger’s hair was styled differently and it’s… not good.
Charlotte Flair defeated Peyton Royce (w/Billie Kay) to qualify for MITB (12:53)
Kay and Royce cut an annoying promo before the match, mocking Charlotte for her loss at Backlash. They went to commercial less than 90 seconds into the match.
As Charlotte took over, Royce went to the outside and Charlotte hit Kay with a dive. That allowed Royce to hit a neckbreaker on the floor for a two count back in the ring. Royce distracted the referee and Kay attacked Charlotte. Royce then used a roundhouse kick but Charlotte kicked out.
Charlotte came back with a big boot and went for a moonsault but Royce got her knees up (sort of). Charlotte was smart enough not to oversell it. Royce used a roll-up for a nearfall. Charlotte followed with a spear for a two count, then Royce used another roll-up for two. After a few more counters, Charlotte applied Figure Eight for the submission win. Charlotte qualifies for MITB.
Dasha Fuentes interviewed Daniel Bryan, who was warming up backstage by a stairwell. Bryan said Big Cass attacked him from behind again, this time because he made him tap out. Bryan said he won MITB before and cashed in on a bigger man in the Big Show, right here in Baltimore. He said he would prove again that the bigger they are, the faster they tap. He thanked Fuentes and went back to warming up.
Another selfie promo, this time by Shelton Benjamin. He claimed he made the MITB match famous and said his best highlight was yet to come. Asuka also did a promo, though it wasn’t on a cell phone. She said she wanted to climb the ladder, grab the contract, and cash in on Carmella.
The crowd chanted “we want pancakes” and Big E chucked some into the stands. They went to commercial two minutes into the match.
Sheamus got on the apron to complain to the referee so Big E whipped pancakes at him until he came down, and Kingston took him out with a dive. As this was happening, Woods tried a springboard move but Cesaro nailed him mid-air with an uppercut for the pinfall win. Some fun action and cool finish.
Young interviewed Styles backstage, who also wasn’t cleared to wrestle. Styles has a large bruise on his cheek where the chair hit him on Sunday. Styles talked about the low-blow and admitted he didn’t want to fight that way. He said he would finish Nakamura if he had the guts to step in the ring with him again.
There was a promo for the Bludgeon Brothers where the camera panned across some dismantled toys of wrestlers from the tag division. The camera landed on Harper and Rowan who held up their mallets and proclaimed they have their own toys to play with. They challenged someone to play with them. “We’re waiting.”
Mandy Rose defeated Becky Lynch (2:21)
Before the match, Paige told Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville that Deville was barred from ringside.
Rose won quickly with a schoolgirl. Lynch was in control until Rose bounced her off the top rope and applied the schoolgirl for the win. Rose has a new entrance and the announcers talked about her as the future. They also talked about Lynch being in a slump even before the finish.
Next week in London, The New Day will face The Bar and one member of the winning team will get to enter MITB. They also plugged Carmella’s celebration. Oh… and Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega debut.
Rusev (w/Aiden English) defeated Daniel Bryan to qualify for MITB (11:17)
They aired clips of Bryan winning MITB and cashing in back in 2011. English sang a song before the match, burying Baltimore and their sports teams. He added, “ol’ D.B. will wish he was still G.M.”
There were dueling chants to start the match. Bryan worked over Rusev and went for a suicide dive, but Rusev caught him and tossed him onto the announce table. I’m pretty sure that’s the time Bryan has attempted a suicide dive since returning, at least on television.
After a break, Bryan made a comeback with a running clothesline, running corner dropkicks, and a hurricanrana off the top. He followed with Yes Kicks but Rusev ducked the last one. Rusev tried a swinging slam but Bryan countered into a schoolboy for a nearfall. Rusev followed that with a high kick for a two count.
The crowd chanted for Bryan (and a few others chanted for Rusev). Rusev went for an Accolade but the work Bryan did on his arm earlier made it difficult to apply. He took too long, so Bryan countered into a Yes Lock attempt but Rusev got a rope break.
Bryan kicked him in the head and set up for his finisher but English pulled Rusev out of the ring. Bryan kicked them both down and used a running knee to the outside on Rusev. Bryan followed with a missile dropkick back in the ring.
Rusev countered the running knee with a knee to the gut, then followed with a Machka kick for the pinfall win. Rusev qualifies for MITB.
The crowd was stunned by the finish, as was I. The announcers tried to tell the story that the weeks of punishment taken by Bryan was too much, though I’m not sure it came off that way.
The match itself was good and Bryan took more of the match you’d normally see from a babyface. After Rusev’s music stopped, they showed Bryan slowly sitting back up with a look of disappointment. The crowd chanted for Bryan as they went off the air.
After announcing the match last week and then removing him from it the next day, Rusev is once again scheduled to face The Undertaker at the Greatest Royal Rumble.
WWE added Rusev back into the casket match today, taking the place of Chris Jericho. Jericho was originally announced for the show’s 50-man Royal Rumble before briefly being slated to wrestle Undertaker.
The storyline explanation for Rusev being replaced was a tweet from Lana where she wrote about lobbying for the change, and WWE had her send out another tweet before revealing that he was back in the match: “After much thought, I have notified @WWE officials that I have changed my mind. @RusevBUL will celebrate #RusevDay by burying The Undertaker in the sands of Saudi [Arabia] and will win the Casket Match at #WWEGRR ! #RusevCrush ! Have a Happy Rusev Day!”
King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will host the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27th, with it airing live on the WWE Network at noon Eastern time. Here’s the updated card:
50-man Greatest Royal Rumble match
Universal Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Roman Reigns in a steel cage match

Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins defending against The Miz, Finn Balor, and Samoa Joe in a ladder match
