Brock Lesnar backstage at WWE Hell in a Cell

Less than a month after losing the Universal Championship, Brock Lesnar is backstage at Hell in a Cell in San Antonio, Texas tonight.

Lesnar being at the show was first reported by PWInsider and has been confirmed by our Dave Meltzer. PWInsider noted that Lesnar had been “walking around in full view of everyone backstage” and wasn’t being hidden from people, but whether or not he’ll play an on-screen role at the pay-per-view remains to be seen.

Lesnar hasn’t appeared on WWE television since losing the Universal title to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. On the Raw after SummerSlam, there was a backstage segment with Kurt Angle and Paul Heyman where Lesnar was written off TV. Heyman said Lesnar wanted to invoke his rematch clause. Angle replied that it would be a long time before that happens, Heyman wanted Lesnar to get a title shot at Hell in a Cell, and Angle told him to forget about it.

Meltzer reported in the August 23 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Lesnar’s WWE contract was set to expire in a few days from then.

Lesnar appeared at UFC 226 in July and set up a potential future heavyweight title fight with Daniel Cormier, but Lesnar isn’t eligible to return to the UFC Octagon until January. Meltzer reported earlier this month that Lesnar hadn’t signed anything to face Cormier but was training with that fight in mind.

KOFI KINGSTON & BIG E VS. RUSEV & AIDEN ENGLISH FOR SMACKDOWN TAG TITLES

Kingston pinned English with Trouble in Paradise to retain the title.

JEFF HARDY VS. RANDY ORTON HELL IN A CELL  MATCH

Orton won when Hardy climbed to the top of a ladder in the cell, grabbed the top of the cell like a pull-up bar and fell down through a table when Orton moved.  Orton moved too early as Hardy letting go looked silly since Orton was long gone from the table.  They are doing this like an injury angle.  The ref screamed for EMTs while Orton demanded he count the pin, which he did.  This was a violent match with Orton using a screwdriver to Hardy’s ear and put it in the earlobe where it’s pierced and twisted it around.  Orton also kicked out of a twist of fate and swanton on a chair.  Orton was bleeding from the back from being whipped by Hardy’s studded belt, and also from chair shots Orton was bleeding from both the thigh and the calf.  This was a slow paced methodical match, all story telling.  It was good in that way, went really long and by the end the crowd was into it.  The crowd was chanting Hardy as he was taken out on a stretcher.  Orton had used chair shots and whipped Hardy with Hardy’s own belt earlier.  Very much an old school style match that worked.

A.J. Styles is doing an interview with Kayla Braxton.  The crowd gave him a big reaction.  Styles said he can’t wait for the match to start because he’s laser focused.

CHARLOTTE FLAIR VS. BECKY LYNCH FOR SMACKDOWN WOMEN’S TITLE

Lynch won the title clean when Charlotte hit the spear and she rolled through for the pin.  The match was deliberate with Lynch working the left arm and Charlotte working the left leg.  Lynch was the clear babyface to the crowd.   Charlotte wasn’t booed heavy but she was booed.  When Lynch won, it was positioned as a babyface win so it looks like they are going with the fans.  Crowd chanted “Becky” when it was over.  Charlotte wanted to shake her hand and Lynch refused and said that Charlotte would not take her moment from her.  Charlotte wasn’t positioned as a heel.  Really good match, a lot of heat in the last several minutes.

DOLPH ZIGGLER & DREW MCINTYRE VS. DEAN AMBROSE & SETH ROLLINS FOR RAW TAG TITLES

This was a hell of a match.  Tons of near falls and they tried to position McIntyre as a future top sigles guy.  Rollins gave Ziggler a falcon arrow but McIntyre hit Rollins with a Claymore kick and Ziggler pinned him.  They kept getting heat on the different Shield guys over and over.  Ambrose gave Ziggler a superplex before they went to the finsh.  Rollins & Ambrose did consecutive dives and Rollins also later missed a dive.

Braun Strowman was watching and Mick Foley told him the cell would change him.  He told him your life would change.  He told Strowman to respect his authority.  Strowman told him I promise you don’t want a monster problem.

A.J. STYLES VS. SAMOA JOE FOR WWE TITLE

Good match.  Styles’ mouth was all busted up from a clothesline perhaps.  Styles hit  a Pele kick and went for the phenomeanl forearm but Joe sidestepped him and turned it into a choke.  Joe was holding he choke and Styles rolled on top of him for the pin.  They are trying to say that maybe Styles tapped before the three count and Joe was furious.  Joe was screaming for Paige.  They showed a slow motion angle and Styles definitely tapped before the three count so that’s leading to a rematch.  Post match saw Styles hit him with an enzuigiri.

DANIEL BRYAN & BRIE BELLA VS. THE MIZ & MARYSE

Miz & Maryse won when Maryse pinned Brie using the ropes when reversing a rolling reverse cradle by Brie.  This was a really good match although it’s three somewhat similar reverse cradle finishes in six matches with the Styles win and the Lynch win.  Crowd was hot for Bryan who did more than he’s done to date even missing a diving head-butt.  Brie made a hot tag that the people were with since they kept Brie and Maryse out most of the way.  Maryse wasn’t very good but Brie looked good and got the crowd behind her.  She threw a ton of punches on Miz when Miz tried to protect Maryse.  Miz was bleeding from the side of the head from an errant punch.

They claimed Jeff Hardy is throwing up blood “in a medical facility” so they are doing an injury angle with him.

RONDA ROUSEY VS. ALEXA BLISS FOR RAW WOMEN’S TITLE

Good match, really better than expected.  Rousey spent much of the match selling her ribs.  It went 12:00 in a singles match and really at no point did she look green.  Her facial selling was really good and her offense was storng, her drama was strong as well.  Mickie James and Alicia Fox interfered and at one point Natalya suplexed Fox on the floor.  Rousey finally made her comeback with a spinning Samoan drop and armbar.

It’s expected Brock Lesnar will get involved in the main event.

Samoa Joe was furious because Styles tapped out.  She said she’d give him a rematch in Australia in three weeks.  He said that’s not soon enough.  Joe demanded a no DQ no count out match and she agreed and evidently that’s the.Australia match  They announced Cena & Lashey vs. Owens & Elias, Underaker vs. HHH for Australia.

ROMAN REIGNS VS. BRAUN STROWMAN HELL IN A CELL MATCH FOR UNIVERSAL TITLE WITH MICK FOLEY AS REFEREE

The main event was insane.  Reigns and Strowman went at it at a fast pace, with Reigns kicking out of a powerslam and Strowman kicking out of Superman punches and a spear through a table.  Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre came out which brought out Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins.  They all wound up on top of the cell with some wild brawling, incuding Ambrose using kendo stick shots.  Ziggler and Rollins then both went to climb down.  They were brawling and both fell from halfway down through two different announces table.  This led to Lesnar and Paul Heyman coming out.  Heyman wanted the key to the cage but the ref wouldn’t let him have it.  Lesnar kicked down the door and destroyed both Reigns and Strowman with broken parts of the able used ont he spear throught he table.  They had both been selling on their back for about six minutes or more.  Eventually Lesnar gave both men F-5s and left.  The match was ruled a no contest when it was ruled niether man could continue, so obviously that builds a rematch in some form.  The show then rushed off the air as the audience was upset about the non-finish.  We’ll have a lot more about this later tonight.

Mick Foley to referee Universal title match at WWE Hell in a Cell

Though he won’t be doing so as an active wrestler, Mick Foley will be stepping back inside Hell in a Cell on Sunday.

Foley’s appearance on tonight’s go-home edition of Raw led to him being announced as the special guest referee for Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman’s Hell in a Cell match for the Universal Championship match at Sunday’s pay-per-view.

Foley’s segment began with him interrupting Elias. The story was that Elias said Foley was never the same after his King of the Ring 1998 Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker. He called Foley a broken man who’s singing the same song he’s been singing for the past 20 years and barely remembers the words. Foley responded that he wasn’t there to talk about the past and announced that Stephanie McMahon has made him the referee for Reigns vs. Strowman.

“Mick Foley: 20 Years of Hell” will also air on the WWE Network after Sunday’s PPV. Foley has been touring a one-man show to mark the 20th anniversary of his Hell in a Cell match against Undertaker, and WWE filmed one of them to air on the Network.

Raw Tag Team title match set for WWE Hell in a Cell

Another match is official for Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

Tonight’s go-home edition of Raw saw one more match get added to the card, with WWE announcing that Raw Tag Team Champions Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre will defend their titles against Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose. The AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, which will host Hell in a Cell on Sunday, had been advertising the match before it was officially confirmed tonight.

After winning the titles last week, Ziggler & McIntyre retained against The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas) in a rematch tonight. Rollins and Ambrose attacked Ziggler and McIntyre after the match.

There was a storyline where Baron Corbin said he would strip Roman Reigns of his Universal Championship and Rollins of his Intercontinental title if The Shield returned after being kicked out for attacking the heel roster in tonight’s opening segment. Rollins threatened to get Corbin in trouble for falsifying a police report, and Corbin made the Tag Team title match for Sunday’s PPV.

Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch is official for this month’s pay-per-view, but it wasn’t announced as taking place inside Hell in a Cell.

Charlotte defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Lynch was officially added to the card for the Hell in a Cell PPV tonight. While WWE had been teasing it as taking place inside the cell as Charlotte and Lynch went back and forth on Twitter yesterday, that wasn’t mentioned during the announcement.

Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship and Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy have been announced as Hell in a Cell matches for the PPV.

Lynch challenged Charlotte to the title match after attacking her on SmackDown last week. On tonight’s show, they furthered their storyline during a split-screen interview with Tom Phillips. Lynch vowed to take the title from Charlotte, while Charlotte asked what Lynch’s excuse will be when she loses this time.

Hell in a Cell is taking place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on September 16. Here’s the updated card:

  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending against Braun Strowman in a Hell in a Cell match
  • WWE Champion AJ Styles defending against Samoa Joe

WWE announces Reigns vs. Strowman Hell in a Cell match

Braun Strowman is cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase for a title match at next month’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

Reigns defending his Universal Championship against Strowman in a Hell in a Cell match was announced for the PPV during the opening segment of tonight’s Raw. The story was that Reigns challenged Strowman to cash in tonight, but Strowman said Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose would just come out to try and save Reigns like they did last week.

Strowman mentioned that Rollins and Ambrose couldn’t get involved at the PPV with him facing Reigns inside Hell in a Cell.

Hell in a Cell will take place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on September 16. Reigns vs. Strowman is the third match to officially be announced for the PPV, joining AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe for the WWE Championship and Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse. AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe confirmed for WWE Hell in a Cell

As expected, Samoa Joe will again be challenging for the WWE Championship at next month’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

WWE has officially confirmed that Styles will be defending his title against Joe at the PPV. If it’s going to take place inside Hell in a Cell, WWE has yet to announce that.

Joe defeated Styles by disqualification at SummerSlam, with Styles snapping and attacking him with a steel chair when Joe continued to taunt his family. Their storyline was furthered on SmackDown this week as Joe ambushed Styles during an interview and put him in the Coquina Clutch. Joe got on the microphone and told Styles’ wife that Styles couldn’t come home and tuck in the kids because Joe already put him to sleep.

The AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas will host Hell in a Cell on September 16. Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse in a mixed tag match has also already been announced for the PPV.

Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella vs. Miz & Maryse set for WWE Hell in a Cell

A mixed tag match is the first thing to be officially announced for WWE’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella will be teaming against The Miz & Maryse at Hell in a Cell, which is taking place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas on September 16. WWE began building to the match at SummerSlam before it was confirmed during the opening segment of tonight’s SmackDown.

The Miz and Maryse started tonight’s episode by mocking Bryan’s retirement speech from 2016, with Miz saying he’s retiring from ever facing Bryan again after defeating him at SummerSlam. Bryan ended up interrupting them and calling Miz a coward. Maryse said Bryan should change his name to “Daniel Bella,” and the storyline led to Brie coming out and punching Miz in the face. Bryan then announced the mixed tag match between the real-life married couples for Hell in a Cell.

Miz defeated Bryan at SummerSlam when Maryse, who was sitting in the front row, gave him brass knuckles to use as a weapon. A segment with Brie encouraging Bryan backstage aired later in the show.

This will be Maryse’s first match since her and Miz faced Nikki Bella & John Cena at WrestleMania 33 in 2017. Brie last wrestled in the women’s Royal Rumble match this January.
