WWE’s Rey Mysterio sidelined with an injury

Rey Mysterio was pulled from the WWE SmackDown World Cup tournament due to a lower body injury.

Dave Meltzer confirms a Ringside News report that Mysterio was replaced in the World Cup by Mustafa Ali after suffering an unspecified lower body injury to either his foor or ankle. Mysterio was reportedly in a walking boot at Friday’s SmackDown taping.

Meltzer notes that the injury is not believed to be serious,  but that Mysterio will be out long enough that Ali was tapped to replace him in the World Cup.

Dave writes:

Rey Mysterio was scheduled for the World Cup but he had either a foot or an ankle injury and was replaced by Mustafa Ali. He was in Indianapolis backstage with a walking boot on. He’s not expected to be out more than a few weeks but wasn’t going to be able to do the tournament.

Mysterio last wrestled on an October 30 house show in Mexico City at Arena CMDX, teaming with AJ Styles and Raquel Rodriguez in a mixed trios bout against Finn Balor, Damian Priest, and Rhea Ripley of The Judgment Day. Mysterio also worked the night prior in Monterrey in the same trios matchup.

In his most recent televised bout, Mysterio challenged Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown in a bout that was taped on October 28, but aired November 4.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Gunther vs. Rey Mysterio

Last night’s SmackDown saw Gunther defend his Intercontinental Championship against a legendary opponent.

A big man vs. little man matchup headlined last night’s SmackDown as Gunther retained the Intercontinental title against Rey Mysterio. Gunther got the win after dropping Mysterio with a lariat.

Mysterio was able to kick out of a powerbomb during the match. Gunther went for a powerbomb again, but Mysterio reversed it into a hurricanrana and attempted a 619. Gunther cut Mysterio off with a big boot, hit a lariat, and pinned him to get the victory.

Earlier in the show, Braun Strowman assured that MVP won’t be a problem for him when he takes on Omos at Saturday’s pay-per-view in Saudi Arabia. Strowman laid out MVP with three powerslams.

It was also announced that either The Usos or Brawling Brutes (Ridge Holland & Butch) will defend the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles against The New Day’s Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods on SmackDown next Friday. Holland & Butch are challenging The Usos for the titles at Crown Jewel.

WWE SmackDown live results: Gunther vs. Rey Mysterio

The final build to Crown Jewel takes place on tonight’s pre-taped episode of SmackDown from St. Louis, Missouri.

Intercontinental Champion Gunther defends his title against Rey Mysterio in tonight’s main event. A few weeks ago, Mysterio won a fatal-four way match to earn the title shot after almost retiring from WWE. Rey was moved to the SmackDown roster to get away from his son Dominik and The Judgment Day.

Imperium jumped Mysterio last week, allowing Gunther to destroy him with a brutal chop to build up tonight’s contest.

Liv Morgan and Sonya Deville continue their feud tonight when they face off in a no DQ match. Morgan defeated Deville in a singles match previously on SmackDown. They got into another brawl backstage last Friday after Deville mocked Morgan again.

Plus, LA Knight goes one-on-one with Ricochet following their confrontation last week. Ricochet accused Knight of being too full of himself and promised that someone will shut Knight up.

Our coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

No Disqualification match: Liv Morgan defeated Sonya Deville (13:48)

Morgan and Deville had a surprisingly good No DQ match. They both worked hard and got the fans into it. They wisely did a few spots with tables and weapons, which worked well. The fans loved it and chanted, “this is awesome.”

Deville started with some quick strikes before rolling out of the ring. She grabbed a kendo stick when Morgan leaped off the steps. They fought over the kendo stick, with Deville getting the better of Morgan. Morgan recovered and got ahold of the kendo stick. She smashed the kendo stick to pieces over Deville’s back. The fans broke into a loud “We want tables” chant.

Morgan pulled out a table to a massive pop. Deville cut her off and put the table back under the ring to boos. Morgan fought back with a pair of suicide dives. The fans broke into another loud “We want tables” chant. Morgan gave them what they wanted and pulled out the table again.

Morgan took forever to set up the table, allowing Deville to take over. Deville attempted a German suplex off the apron onto the table. At first, Morgan held onto the top rope. She changed her mind and let them both crash through the table. Morgan laughed hysterically.

Back from the break, Deville rocked Morgan with a knee for a near fall. Deville threw a bunch of chairs into the ring, but Morgan regained control. Morgan went for a super plex onto the pile of chairs.

Deville slipped out and powerbombed Morgan on the pile for a close near fall. The fans erupted in a “This is awesome” chant. Deville went for her finisher, the advocate, but Morgan broke free. Morgan then hit the oblivion on the pile for the win.

The Progressive Match Flo of the week recapped SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey defeating the returning Emma last week.

Megan Morant interviewed Emma backstage. She’s excited to be back and had a lot to prove last week. She has a lot to prove to herself. Xia Li interrupted and called Emma weak. Emma didn’t care and knocked Li down to end the segment.

A video package hyped the Roman Reigns vs. Logan Paul match.

A Viking Raiders vignette aired.

LA Knight defeated Ricochet (9:54)

Ricochet and LA Knight had a solid match. LA Knight cheated to win, which felt like the right finish. There was nothing wrong with it but also nothing that stood out.

In an inset interview, Ricochet promised to beat Knight and shut him up.

As LA Knight walked to the ring, he approached Ricochet’s girlfriend and ring announcer, Samantha Irvin. He complained about her introduction and noted it might be good for Ricochet but not him.

Ricochet heard enough and hit Knight with a suicide dive. He was firmly in control and set up for another dive. Knight grabbed his leg to take over. An overly confident Knight attempted a second rope moonsault but missed. Ricochet teased a dive but did a back flip into the ring and posed.

LA Knight dropped Ricochet on the top rope to take over during the break. Knight hit a running knee on the apron and followed with a slingshot shoulder block. Knight mocked Ricochet and posed.

Knight slowed the pace down with a chin lock. Ricochet broke free and hit a flying crossbody. Knight recovered quickly with a jumping neck breaker for a two count. Knight sat on the top turnbuckle and mocked Ricochet. Ricochet leaped up and caught Knight with a hurricanrana for a two count.

Ricochet fired up and hit a standing shooting star press for near fall. Ricochet leaped off the top rope, but Knight avoided him. The finish came when Ricochet rolled up Knight. Knight reversed and held the tights and ropes for the win.

******

In the back, The Bloodline discussed plans for Crown Jewel. Jey Uso wanted to go to the ring and call out The Brawling Brutes. Sami Zayn disagreed. Jey said this isn’t a Bloodline thing but a Uso thing. They were champions before Zayn joined the Bloodline and will still be champions when Zayn’s gone. Jimmy agreed with Jey, and they walked off. Zayn tried to stop them, but they didn’t listen. Zayn tried once more as they walked off and yelled, “My dawgs!”

*******

In the back, Bray Wyatt admitted it’s hard to talk about his feelings. He doesn’t like when somebody interrupts him. Suddenly, a crew member accidentally got in the shot. Wyatt approached him and freaked out. He was aggressive and yelled at him. He demanded the guy apologize for interrupting. As Wyatt yelled, various images flashed across the screen, including Uncle Howdy.

*******

The Usos Segment

The fans broke into an “Ucey” chant before Jey spoke. Jimmy noted they’re nine days from breaking New Day’s record. Jey added that it starts with The Brawling Brutes at Crown Jewel.

New Day’s music hit, and they made their way to the ring. Kofi Kingston admitted they’re rooting for The Brawling Brutes to beat The Usos. Woods noted that if they retain, they’ll be waiting for The Usos. Kingston added that they got next.

They squared off in the ring when The Brawling Brutes jumped The Usos from behind. New Day and The Brutes beat down The Usos until Sami Zayn, and Solo Sikoa made the save. The Bloodline worked together and beat down New Day and The Brawling Brutes. The fans broke into a giant “Sami Uso” chant.

*******

In the back, Megan Morant interviewed Rey Mysterio. Mysterio admitted that he misses his son, but he’s focused on winning the title. He promised to defeat Gunther and win the Intercontinental title later.

*******

Shayna Baszler (w/Ronda Rousey) defeated Natalya (4:11)

Baszler and Natalya worked at a slow and methodical pace. The fans seemed dead, but the match wasn’t about spectacular moves. It was about getting Baszler over as the “old” Baszler from NXT.

Baszler dominated Natalya stomping her in the corner. She followed up with a stomp on Natalya’s elbow. Baszler targeted the arm, but Natalya fought back with hard shots. Natalya finally hit the discus clothesline and went for the sharpshooter. Baszler poked her in the eyes and locked on the kirifuda clutch. Natalya tried breaking free, but Baszler held on for the win.

After the match, Rousey instructed Baszler to knee Natalya in the face. Natalya appeared to break her nose.

******

A video package hyped Drew McIntyre vs. Karrion Kross in a steel cage at Crown Jewel.

MVP Segment

MVP discussed Braun Strowman vs. Omos at Crown Jewel. MVP noted Omos defeated four guys on Raw. Tonight MVP picked out five opponents for Strowman and introduced them.

The five local talent slowly made their way to the ring. They were terrified when Strowman’s music hit. He mowed them all down in the aisle way easily. Strowman then got in the ring and threw MVP around. He ended by giving MVP three running power slams.

********

Kayla Braxton tried to interview Gunther, but Ludwig Kaiser sent her away. Gunther promised to defend his title with dignity, respect, and honor; He noted Rey Mysterio has no honor, and that’s why his son turned on him. He added there’s one thing that will never change in WWE. Gunther will always be the Intercontinental Champion.

Intercontinental Champion Gunther defeated Rey Mysterio (18:18)

Gunther and Rey had a great big man-little man match. Rey used his speed and high-flying moves but couldn’t overcome Gunther’s power and size. It featured a ton of unique spots and a hot finish.

Mysterio used his speed to avoid Gunther early. Gunther backed Mysterio into the corner and rocked him with a vicious chop. He then threw Mysterio off the apron to ringside.

After the break, Gunther tossed Mysterio out of the ring under the bottom rope. He then powerbombed Mysterio onto the apron. Gunther followed up with a big slam and a kick to the back. Gunther went for another slam, but Mysterio held on. Mysterio climbed onto his back and hit a crucifix bomb.

Mysterio picked up the pace and jumped off the ropes. Gunther caught him, but Mysterio switched to a sleeper. Gunther fought back and threw Mysterio off. Mysterio recovered and got the sleeper a second time. Gunther couldn’t figure out how to break free. He climbed up the turnbuckle with Mysterio on his back and fell backward.

Back from the commercial, Gunther continued to dominate Mysterio. He pulled at Mysterio’s mask and backed him into the corner. Mysterio fired up and rocked Gunther with hard shots.

Gunther recovered and set up for a powerbomb. Mysterio escaped and caught Gunther with a bulldog to take over. He followed up with a senton for a two-count. Mysterio hit the 619 and climbed to the top rope. Gunther cut him off and climbed up instead.

Mysterio cut Gunther off this time. He attempted a hurricanrana, but Gunther blocked it. Gunther went for a second rope powerbomb, but Mysterio countered into a hurricanrana for a near fall. The fans broke into a “This is awesome” chant.

Mysterio continued his onslaught with a code red for a near fall. After Mysterio missed a frog splash, Gunther hit a shotgun dropkick and powerbomb for a close near fall. A frustrated Gunther went for another powerbomb, but Mysterio set up for the 619. Gunther recovered and rocked Mysterio with a boot to the face. Gunther pulled Mysterio by his arm and clotheslined him mid-air for the win.

Gunther vs. Rey Mysterio set for November 4 edition of WWE SmackDown

The next Intercontinental title match now has a date.

It was confirmed on Friday’s SmackDown that Gunther will defend against Rey Mysterio in two weeks, on the November 4 edition of the program. That episode of SmackDown will be held one night prior to Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. On Friday’s show, Mysterio defeated Ludwig Kaiser in a singles match.

On last week’s SmackDown, Rey Mysterio was traded to SmackDown from Raw after a meeting with Triple H. He was then announced as the replacement for Karrion Kross in a four-way match to determine the next challenger for Gunther’s Intercontinental title. Mysterio won the match, pinning Ricochet in a match that also had Solo Sikoa and Sheamus.

Gunther last defended the Intercontinental title against Sheamus on the October 7 edition of SmackDown. This was a rematch from Clash of the Castle back in September in which Gunther was also victorious.

AAA Triplemania XXX notes: Rey Mysterio appears via video, Cibernetico loses hair

Here are news and notes from Saturday’s Triplemania event in Mexico City.

Rey Mysterio, who is currently under contract to WWE, appeared at the start of the show, talking about Triplemania. He thanked all the fans for being there.

In one of the three top matches on the card, Cibernetico lost his hair to Pagano. In a match filled with weapons, tables, barbed wire, and thumbtacks, Pagano scored the win after landing an air raid crash off a ladder, sending both men through the stage. Vampiro, who had inserted himself into the match as a referee after the first referee was knocked out, counted the pinfall. Konnan, who was attacked earlier in the show by Cibernetico and the rest of Los Vipers, got involved as well, attacking Los Vipers with a weapon.

Los Hermanos Lee (Dralistico and Dragon Lee) defeated Arez and Willie Mack, Myzteziz Jr. and Komander, and Los Vipers (Toxin and Latigo) in a four-way match to earn a future shot at the AAA Tag Team titles, which are currently held by AEW’s FTR. Also on the show, Taurus won the 13-person copa Triplemania battle royal.

Later in the show, a ceremony was held inducting two new members of the AAA Hall of Fame: Blue Demon, who would have turned 100 on April 24 of this year, and Arturo ‘Rudo’ Riviera, who passed away earlier this year. Family members of both men accepted the honor, including Blue Demon Jr. on behalf of his father.

Rey Mysterio moves to WWE SmackDown, becomes IC title number one contender

Rey Mysterio is the new number one contender to the Intercontinental title, officially making the move to the SmackDown brand.

Mysterio defeated Ricochet, Solo Sikoa, and Sheamus in a fatal four-way match on Friday’s show, earning a future Intercontinental title match against Gunther. The finish had Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, and Brawling Brutes all battling to the back after making the save for their men. Inside the ring, Mysterio managed to cut off Ricochet and connect with the 619 for the victory.

It was said during commentary that Mysterio was now officially a part of the SmackDown brand.. Earlier in the show, Mysterio spoke to Triple H, insisting he was not going to fight his own son and was upset about Dominik’s recent actions, saying he was ready to quit. Triple H instead talked him into going into his office to work things out.

Mysterio was a replacement for Karrion Kross, who was originally scheduled to compete in the match. However, the opening moments of SmackDown revealed he and Scarlett were involved in a car accident. McIntyre jumped Kross as he was recovering and continued to attack him as referees and officials attempted to break up the altercation.

Bianca Belair vs. IYO SKY, Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio set for WWE Raw

Two matches have been added to Monday’s Raw.

It was announced on Friday that Bianca Belair will face IYO SKY, while Seth Rollins will face Rey Mysterio.

The end of Raw on Monday had Damage Control lay out Bianca Belair, Asuka, and Alexa Bliss after Bayley defeated Bliss. The show ended with Bayley telling Belair that she will see Belair at Extreme Rules on October 8 for the Raw Women’s Championship.

Raw this past Monday also had Rollins and Riddle interfere in each other’s matches. After Riddle caused Rollins a match against Bobby Lashley, Rollins emerged during a Judgment Day vs. Rey Mysterio & Riddle bout, eventually causing them to lose the match. Later, Rollins accepted a match against Riddle at Extreme Rules in a Fight Pit match.

Here is the latest lineup for Monday’s Raw:

  • Bianca Belair vs. IYO SKY
  • Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins
  • Kevin Owens & Johnny Gargano vs. Alpha Academy (Chad Gable & Otis)
  • Matt Riddle vs. Damian Priest

Dominik Mysterio joins The Judgment Day on WWE Raw

Dominik Mysterio has joined The Judgment Day.

Two days after turning on Edge and his father Rey Mysterio at WWE Clash at the Castle, Dominik officially joined The Judgment Day on Monday’s Raw, aiding the group as they attacked Edge.

Edge opened Raw by calling Dominik out. Rey answered the callout instead, and asked Edge not to hurt his son. Edge said that Dominik is old enough to answer for his own actions, and proceeded to call Dominik out again.

Rhea Ripley answered Edge, and said that she had made Dominik a man. Dominik then entered and stood with Ripley. Rey exited, saying he could not be a part of what was about to happen. He asked Dominik to look at him and to apologize to Edge, but Dominik refused.

While Dominik and Ripley walked towards the ring, Finn Balor and Damian Priest of Judgment Day attacked Edge. Dominik handed Balor a chair, and Balor hit a Coup de Grace, Pillman-izing Edge’s leg. Dominik then posed with The Judgment Day as Rey returned to check on Edge.

It was announced on commentary that Edge had been taken to a medical facility following the attack.

Dominik debuted as an in-ring competitor in WWE at SummerSlam in 2020, facing Seth Rollins in a singles match. He went on to tag with Rey for much of the last two years, and the two captured the SmackDown Tag Team titles in May 2021, holding those belts for two months.

Dominik Mysterio turns heel at WWE Clash at the Castle

A noteworthy heel turn took place at Saturday’s Clash at the Castle pay-per-view in Cardiff.

Dominik Mysterio turned heel at the PPV, betraying his father Rey Mysterio and attacking Edge. The heel turn happened after Rey & Edge defeated The Judgment Day (Damian Priest & Finn Balor) at Clash at the Castle.

Dominik entered the ring following Rey & Edge’s win. Instead of celebrating with them, Dominik gave Edge a low blow. Rey then argued with Dominik and pleaded with him to stop the attack. But Dominik responded by laying out Edge with a lariat.

The Judgment Day reacted by laughing at Rey and Edge. It wasn’t confirmed if Dominik will be joining Judgment Day.

As Dominik headed to the back alone, he ripped off his “Mysterios” T-shirt and threw it to the ground.

Leading into Clash at the Castle, The Judgment Day had attempted to recruit Dominik into their ranks. There was a moment on Raw this past Monday where Dominik refused to hit Rhea Ripley with a kendo stick.

Dissension between Dominik and Edge was established last month when Edge accidentally gave Dominik a spear when Ripley pushed Dominik in the way.

Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. Judgment Day set for WWE Clash at the Castle

A new tag team match has been added to WWE Clash at the Castle this Saturday.

It was announced during Monday’s Raw that Edge and Rey Mysterio will face off against The Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest). Dominic Mysterio will be in the corner of his father and Edge, while Rhea Ripley will be in the corner of Balor and Priest.

Edge defeated Damian Priest in a match that took place on Raw last week. However, he was jumped by the rest of the Judgment Day and was about to be laid out with a conchairto when Beth Phoenix ran in for the save.

After Judgment Day defeated Dolph Ziggler and AJ Styles on Monday’s Raw, Edge came out and laid a trap on the Judgment Day, distracting them long enough for Rey and Dominik Mysterio to arrive with chairs. Dominik and Ripley ended up confronting one another, with Dominik giving Ripley a kendo stick he had before Rey and Edge made the save.

Here is the current card for Saturday’s Clash at the Castle:

  • Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship
  • Liv Morgan vs. Shayna Baszler for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship
  • Gunther vs. Sheamus for the Intercontinental Championship
  • Seth Rollins vs. Riddle
  • Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. The Judgment Day (Finn Balor & Damian Priest)
  • Bianca Belair, Asuka, and Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley, Dakota Kai, and IYO SKY

Mysterio’s squad will play for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, while Miz’s side will play for The V Foundation’s Connor’s Cure Fund.

A half-hour version of Family Feud airs daily in syndication, while the prime time Celebrity edition runs for one hour. Rey Mysterio says WWE is ‘in the hands of the right people’

Rey Mysterio is confident in the new WWE management regime.

Mysterio was in Saudi Arabia recently for the Gamers8 festival and spoke to The National about WWE, his legacy, and if he still plans on retiring at 50.

Regarding the recent changes in WWE, Mysterio believes the company is in the right hands.

“The one thing I can say and I can answer it straight from my heart, and from the changes that I’ve seen in the past two weeks, is the position that Triple H has, and the rest of their crew including Stephanie McMahon, Bruce Prichard, Nick Khan, is a very, very difficult position to overcome,” he said.

“But I think it’s in the hands of the right people without a doubt. And if there’s anyone that’s willing to make a change for the better is the guys that are in charge right now. So I truly believe we are in good hands.”

“Triple H wants nothing but the best for this business, in this industry and for this company. Now, it’s going to be up to us to put in the work to help them take it to the next level.”

During an interview with Ariel Helwani earlier this year, Mysterio said that it had always been his plan not to wrestle past 50. The 47-year-old is enjoying this stage of his career, however, and isn’t thinking about a retirement date just yet.

“Obviously, times change and your train of thought changes as you get older. Having my son Dominik become a part of WWE changed my outcome and the number that I was looking at,” Mysterio said. “Since the beginning, I’ve never enjoyed things as much as I am during this phase of my career.”

“My body feels great. My mind feels great. Right now, I’m not even thinking of a number,” he continued. “I’m just enjoying every day as it happens and getting the most out of it. I’m sure that eventually my body is going to say: ‘Okay, now’s the time, don’t go any further.’ And, that’s when I’m going to decide to push everything behind. But I’m enjoying the moment right now.”

Mysterio also said he’s happy in WWE and not looking to work anywhere else.

“I never really had any desire to go anywhere else. It has always been the WWE,” he continued. “Now I know the WWE has always been my home.

“And, not only for me, but for my son as well and for my family. You know, we’ve been part of the WWE brand for 20 years. And, it’s once you get to know family, you just don’t turn away from them.”

Rey Mysterio vs. Finn Balor announced for WWE Raw

A new match has been made official for Monday’s episode of Raw.

WWE has announced that Rey Mysterio vs. Finn Balor will take place on Raw this Monday night. It will be the latest chapter in the rivalry between The Mysterios and The Judgment Day.

At SummerSlam, Rey & Dominik Mysterio defeated The Judgment Day (Balor & Damian Priest w/ Rhea Ripley) in a no disqualification match when Edge returned and came to the aid of The Mysterios. It was Edge’s first appearance since The Judgment Day turned against him this June.

The post-SummerSlam episode of Raw saw Rey & Dominik unsuccessfully challenge The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team titles. When The Judgment Day attacked The Mysterios after the match, Edge made the save. But Edge accidentally speared Dominik when Ripley pushed Dominik in the way. Edge was attempting to spear Balor.

After accidentally spearing Dominik, Edge chased Balor through the crowd.

This will be the second time Rey Mysterio and Balor have ever faced off one-on-one. Balor defeated Rey in a singles match on Raw last month.

Monday’s Raw is being held at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. The updated lineup for the episode is listed below:

  • United States Champion Bobby Lashley defends against Ciampa
  • The WWE Women’s Tag Team title tournament begins
  • Rey Mysterio vs. Finn Balor

United States title match set for next week’s WWE Raw

Ciampa will be the next challenger for Bobby Lashley on next week’s Raw.

Raw on Monday had Ciampa earn a shot at Lashley’s title after winning a three-way that involved Dolph Ziggler and Chad Gable. He then faced Styles, who also won a three-way match, where the winner would get the US title shot. The finish had Miz, who was on the outside with Styles, attempt to hold Styles’ foot. Styles escaped and made it back into the ring to avoid a count-out, but ended up being pinned by Ciampa after he hit the fairytale ending.

Later in the evening, Lashley was interviewed about the match and welcomed the challenge, despite knowing that Miz would likely be involved.

At SummerSlam this past Saturday, Lashley defeated Theory to retain the United States title. Also at SummerSlam, The Miz lost to Logan Paul despite interference from Ciampa, who was eventually forced to the back by AJ Styles.
