Mat Men: The post-Vince McMahon WWE era begins, SummerSlam preview

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIcxLy8GlT0

Andrew and Rich are back for another episode of Mat Men, talking about the latest pro wrestling news.

Watch on YouTube above or scroll down to listen for free.

Now that Vince McMahon has resigned from WWE, there was a lot of fallout this week, including Paul “Triple H” Levesque being named head of creative and WWE announcing the rewriting of financial statements to account for McMahon’s hush money payments.

SummerSlam is this Saturday and we run down the card and give our predictions. We also speculate what big moments might happen knowing HHH is booking the show.

ROH Death Before Dishonor was last Saturday when Claudio Castagnoli won their world championship from Jonathan Gresham…who then asked for his release after the show. We discuss the fallout and what it means for Gresham going forward.

AEW Dynamite focused a lot on getting younger talents over, including Jungle Boy and Ricky Starks both giving career-altering promos. We also look at the possibility of guys maybe wanting to go back to WWE now that leadership has changed.

Plus, we break down the card for the Ric Flair’s Last Match pay-per-view on Sunday, the newly-announced AEW Trios titles, your questions, and more!

Fight Game: The 2022 pro wrestling draft

John LaRocca and I will be back with our normal show next week, but this week is…draft week.

Knowing our show would be off its normal cadence because of vacation, we pre-recorded this episode with the idea that we were CEOs of new wrestling companies and could pick from all the existing wrestling talent. In our draft, age mattered as did previous drawing power.

John got the first pick and we were off, choosing 16 singles wrestlers and six male tag teams.

Fight Game: Dave Meltzer Q&A

The following is a free show. Just click below to listen.

John LaRocca and I are off for the next two weeks, but that doesn’t mean this feed is going dark.

While we’re not going to have our normal show of current pro wrestling discussion and a review of AEW Dynamite, we do have something special in its place.

I recorded a Q&A with Dave Meltzer that ran on Fight Game Media Network + earlier this week that also doubles as this week’s episode of The Fight Game Podcast. We took questions from listeners of this show as well as members of the Fight Game Media Network Facebook group.

Dave answers questions about a possible AEW stadium show, his favorite G1 matches, women’s wrestling in Mexico, WWE vs. AEW, and a lot more.

Wrestling Observer Live: Dave Meltzer on WWE TV-14 story, Vince McMahon allegations

On the Sunday edition of Wrestling Observer Live, I am joined by Dave Meltzer for the first half of the show. We discuss the news of WWE Raw possibly returning to TV-14, why this is happening, and if it could change the television product going forward.

Dave and I also follow up on the latest on the Vince McMahon allegations, including if there will be any other significant claims coming out. This also reminded me about Vince and Dave being on Phil Donahue’s show in the 90s.

I talk the latest on the WWE SummerSlam card, what matches are looking to steal the show, how Liv Morgan can retain the SmackDown Women’s title, and if Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns will deliver?

We also talk Ric Flair’s Last Match, ROH Death Before Dishonor, and more!

It’s time for the Saturday Wrestling Observer Live with a lot to talk about.

  • Is TV-14 back in WWE?
  • The G1 Climax kicks off in NJPW
  • Keiji Muto begins his farewell in NOAH

DragonKing Dark: The death of Naomi Judd

We continue our series of 100 of the darkest moments in pop culture history by looking at the recent death of country music star Naomi Judd.

Judd was 76 years old and all of The Judds’ hit songs were behind them, so in terms of affecting pop culture, one might argue that this one doesn’t effect the future much.

I argue differently as her death has brought the very relevant topic of mental illness front and center, right where it needs to be.

Let’s continue this series on DragonKing Dark with a look at the death of Naomi Judd.

Fight Game: Are there any transcendent wrestling stars today?

John LaRocca and I are back with another episode of the Fight Game Podcast.

Before we review AEW Dynamite from Wednesday, we talk about all the transcendent wrestling stars from 1984 until today and wonder if we would add any current wrestlers to that list.

Then, we review AEW Dynamite from Rochester, New York, including:

  • Wardlow’s great TNT title win, but very little mention on him for the rest of the show
  • Throwaway segments with “Smart” Mark and Tony Nese
  • Christian Cage’s new cheap heat gimmick
  • Billy Gunn turning on The Acclaimed
