DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Pro Wrestling Illustrated from January 1983

In my rotation of retro pro wrestling podcasts on the DragonKingKarl Wrestling Show, I am adding old magazine reviews.

The newsstand pro wrestling magazines were a staple of wrestling from the 1950s through the 1990s and especially peaked in the 1970-80s. Before the Internet and before newsletters were so widely distributed, the wrestling magazines are where you got your news and information about wrestlers outside your regional area.

To kick things off, let’s take a look at Pro Wrestling Illustrated from January 1983 featuring Ricky Steamboat, Bruiser Brody, Tommy Rich, and more.

DragonKing Dark: The death of John Denver

In my continuing series on the 100 darkest moments in pop culture history, I look back at the 1997 death of folk and country music star John Denver who was killed in an experimental aircraft crash at the age of 53.

While Denver’s career as a hit maker was probably over, he was still a successful touring musician, actor, and activist.

His death was also completely avoidable for multiple reasons including his suspended pilot’s license and a terrible aircraft design.

Let’s look back at this story on this week’s DragonKing Dark.

Portland Wrestlecast: The biggest feud in Portland history

The Portland Wrestlecast is back with the history of the biggest feud in Portland Wrestling history. It was bigger than Piper vs. Rose or Rip Oliver vs. Billy Jack.

In 1968, “Tough” Tony Borne vs. Lonnie Mayne drew thousands of fans to the then brand-new Portland Memorial Coliseum. They went from dominant World Tag Team champions to a series of battles that fans in Portland remember to this day.

I talk with longtime fan, promoter and historian Frank Culbertson about his memories of the feud and the new book from Mike Rodgers: “Katie Bar The Door! History of Portland Wrestling.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The Yeti biography

I bet you didn’t expect this. Yes, Karl Stern vs. The Yeti.

I saw the debut of The Yeti in WCW and am also a fan of giant tall wrestlers. I may be the only one, but this gimmick was something that straight out of Memphis wrestling, only it was on national TV.

Ron Reis was the man under The Yeti outfit but instead of looking like an abominable snowman, he was a mummy.

None of this makes sense so listen to the show and I’ll unpack it for you. You won’t regret it.

DragonKing Dark: Warner Bros. destroys DC Comics

I continue my series of 100 of the darkest moments in pop culture history and this week, I look at the destruction wrought by Warner Bros. against the iconic characters of DC Comics.

Characters who have been around since the 1930s have been rendered generationally irrelevant by a terrible connected universe of movies, bad castings, awful scripts, and, oh yeah, Ezra Miller.

Hear all about it on this week’s DragonKing Dark.

Wrestling Observer Live: Final AEW Forbidden Door preview, WWE notes & news

Andrew Zarian is back with an all-new Sunday edition of Wrestling Observer Live to talk about the latest news including a preview of Sunday’s AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door.

With a little help from Producer Matt, Andrew runs down tonight’s Forbidden Door card, what surprises we might see, and who we think is facing Zack Sabre Jr.

Injuries have been a big problem in putting this card together. We give you the latest injury report and discuss how that’s changed the card.

Stephanie McMahon’s appointment as WWE Chairwoman and CEO was made by other board members, not by her family or Nick Khan. This goes against previous reports that her leadership was in question.

Also, Andrew gives you a few notes from WWE SmackDown this week and a preview of Money In The Bank next weekend.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: Ultimo Dragon biography

This week’s biography lands on one of my favorite wrestlers: Ultimo Dragon.

I was already a big fan of his before he showed up on WCW television as a new international junior heavyweight. The photo of him as the J-Crown champion survives in pop culture as a meme of achievement.

Dragon has had standout matches all over the world including in Mexico, Japan, and the United States but, of course, his worst stint was in WWE.

Nevertheless, I love Ultimo Dragon so let’s talk about him on this week’s DragonKing Classic Wrestling Show.
